A Remarkable Year
Dear Oakwood Community: It is a privilege and an honor to serve as the Head of School at The Oakwood School and to write to you as we begin Oakwood’s 28th academic year. The 20222023 school year was indeed a terrific one at Oakwood as we experienced another enrollment increase, opened our new Lower/Middle School Innovation Lab, won two more state athletic championships, had over 1,100 people attend our performances of Shrek, The Musical, and saw our graduating seniors average over $100,000 per student in merit-based college scholarship offers. The 2023-2024 school year is already off to a terrific start with a 20% increase in enrollment from last year that has Oakwood planning expansions to its campus facilities. Positivity abounds and the sense of community on Oakwood’s campus is as strong as ever. The 2022-2023 Annual Report provides a snapshot of the many ways in which the members of our school community gave so graciously of their time, talents, and financial resources to our school and its students during the previous school year. Every gift has a direct impact on the lives of our students, faculty, and staff and enhances the broad range of programs offered at Oakwood. Without this generosity and commitment, Oakwood truly would not be the special place that it is, and for that I thank all of you on behalf of everyone who works and learns here every day. In addition, 2022-2023 saw Oakwood graduate our first Monk Family Scholar thanks to the generosity of the Bill and Agnes Monk Family Foundation. Named in honor of longtime Oakwood supporters and alumni grandparents Bill and Agnes Monk, in early 2019 the foundation established a donor-directed endowment fund in order to provide a renewable tuition scholarship for new students entering Oakwood in grades 9 through 12. Following the graduation of our first Monk Family Scholar last spring, Oakwood accepted a new Monk Family Scholar for the 20232024 year to ensure that we will continue to have four Monk Family Scholars at Oakwood in perpetuity.
Other major areas of support for Oakwood in 20222023 include: Countless volunteer hours from the members of our Oakwood community; Annual Fund contributions of $140,042, including 100% Board, 100% faculty and staff, and over 75% parent participation; The 2023 Blue Jean Ball, which was held for the first time at ECU’s TowneBank Tower, grossed over $119, 404; Corporate Partner support of over $75,000; and Creation of the new Eileen Van Houten Endowment Fund and the Amy Gardner Athletic Fund. Oakwood has had only one mission throughout its history: to instill in our students the strength of character, the creativity, and the wisdom to make a difference in the world. Having graduated our 15th class of seniors this last spring, we are continuing to see the incredible impact that our alumni are having 1 on our world, and that impact will continue to grow with each graduating class. We now even have Oakwood alumni making a difference right here on campus with some alumni on our faculty and others becoming Oakwood parents by enrolling their own children here.

Annual Fund 2022-23 Bubbling with Excitement Allen and Kimberly Sicley were gracious enough to chair our 2022-24 Annual Fund campaign. Allen is originally from Northern NY and Kimberly is from Havelock, NC. Their family has been in Greenville for over 20 years, and they both work in the pharmaceutical industry. They have three children: Allen, Adrianna ’27 and Hampton ‘32. Both Adrianna and Hampton started in PK4 at Oakwood. Kimberly and Allen are pleased to share their reasons for supporting the Annual Fund: "We are so grateful for the educational opportunity that Oakwood provides for our children and our community. Every day we see the engagement of our children, faculty, and parents. At Oakwood, we know our children are in a safe and caring environment, with teachers who are genuinely committed to their success. Our children are learning how to learn, and not what to learn. They are learning how to be problem solvers and critical thinkers, preparing for their future with STEAM-driven principles and resources. We also know that the success of The Oakwood School is dependent on a strong partnership between the faculty, the students, and the parents. We are all aligned and engaged toward the same goal: to provide the best educational opportunity and environment for our children. The Annual Fund is a key source of funds that supports the school’s mission for our children. We know how hard you work for your money and how valuable and limited your time is, so the key objective we have this year is 'Smart, Strategic Giving'. This ensures that we get the most value out of each gift.
Participation in the Annual Fund is critical. We had 100% board participation and 100% faculty and staff participation. That kind of support from our board members, faculty, and staff really shows the commitment to our children and school. We are confident that supporting Oakwood is a solid investment in your child's future."

Corporate Partners Oakwood’s Corporate Partners Program provides area businesses with the opportunity to publicly support all of the school’s events and programs, while also offering unique marketing access to the campus community. Hosted at Pitt Street Brewing Company on December 15, 2022, the annual Oakwood Alumni Social was a blast. Mrs. Smith worked the room, sharing memories and laughter with former students. Many were able to meet our current Head of School, Mr. Q, and share horror stories about law school. This annual event is always a wonderful time to catch up with classmates.
