2023-2024 Annual Report

FromtheHeadofSchool

Dear Oakwood Community:

It is a privilege and an honor to serve as the Head of School at The Oakwood School and to write to you as we begin Oakwood’s 29th academic year with increased enrollment in each of our three divisions for the third straight year and a capital campaign that is gaining momentum with each passing day The 20232024 school year was another fantastic one at Oakwood as we added new sections of PK3 and PK4, won another state athletic championship, had fantastic crowds at our performances of Beauty and the Beast, and saw our graduating seniors average over $127,000 per student in merit-based college scholarship offers

The 2023-2024 Annual Report provides a snapshot of the many ways in which the members of our school community gave so graciously of their time, talents, and financial resources to our school and its students during the previous school year Every gift has a direct impact on the lives of our students, faculty, and staff and enhances the broad range of programs offered at Oakwood Without this generosity and commitment, Oakwood truly would not be the special place that it is, and for that I thank all of you on behalf of everyone who works and learns here every day

“ItistrulyagreattimetobeanOakwoodEagleastheenergyon Oakwood’scampusispalpableandthesenseofcommunityisas strongasever.”

One of the most critical initiatives at Oakwood in 2023-2024 was the kickoff of our ALL IN Capital Campaign, a three-year campaign with a $2 5 million goal that is funding new additions to Founders Hall and Agnes Q Monk Hall as well as important upgrades to the gym floor, stage, and sound system in Agnes Q Monk Gym The 2024-2025 school year got off to a terrific start with a ribbon cutting ceremony for those new additions and the announcement of a $250,000 challenge gift to our ALL IN Capital Campaign from an anonymous Oakwood family As of the writing of this report we have raised over $1 4 million toward our $2 5 million goal and can reach $1 9 million when our school community matches the $250,000 challenge gift

Other major areas of support for Oakwood in 2023-2024 include:

Countless volunteer hours from the members of our Oakwood community; Annual Fund contributions of $151,857, including 100% Board, 100% faculty and staff, and over 64% parent participation; The 2024 Blue Jean Ball which grossed over $77 340 and had a successful Fund-A-Need that enabled us to add outdoor play equipment for all three divisions;

Corporate Partner support of over $100,214; and Creation of the new Rita Watson Fund named in memory of one of our most beloved community members

Oakwood has had only one mission throughout its history: to instill in our students the strength of character, the creativity, and the wisdom to make a difference in the world Having graduated our 16th class of seniors this last spring, we are continuing to see the incredible impact that our alumni are having on our world, and that impact will continue to grow with each graduating class We now even have Oakwood alumni making a difference right here on campus with some alumni on our faculty and others becoming Oakwood parents by enrolling their own children here

Your generosity is critical as we continue to deliver on our mission by preparing our students to become the leaders and problem solvers of tomorrow

With warmest regards,

Dear Oakwood Community,

I wear many hats at Oakwood: Lower and Middle School parent, PSA volunteer, coach, trustee, and Capital Campaign Chair I am beyond excited about the new facilities and upgrades at our school this year and I am hopeful that you have had a chance to tour them My 3rd grader is so pleased that his classroom is across from the new LS/MS Innovation Lab Both he and my 5th grader are excited about the new space and equipment -- "Inno Lab" days are their favorite school days!

Rob and I strongly believe that Oakwood is the premier choice for an independent education in Eastern NC, and I suspect you feel the same way. Our family is deeply grateful to the families who came before us and had the vision for this school. They went out on a limb and stood for something when it required a good deal of courage and investment, both in time and finances. Most good things are not easy, and endeavors like this are worth working for. I’m asking you to join our family in going ALL IN for Oakwood by supporting this Capital Campaign: to honor your student and our forebears, to continue providing these students with the best education possible, and to make dreams a reality.

Our goal for phase one is $2 5 million I am ecstatic that our community has raised $1 4 million to date; if we can meet this match, we’ll reach $1 9 million With your commitment, $2 5 million is achievable, and then we can watch more dreams become reality as we move to phase two The ALL IN campaign is aimed at bringing the best to our students in a fiscally responsible manner We look to our community to sustain our school and ask that you make Oakwood a philanthropic priority

All the best,

Breaking Ground

The entire Oakwood student body gathered with a buzz in the air on Friday, February 2, 2024 No one could keep the smiles off of their faces as Lower School students streamed out of classrooms, proudly wearing their yellow hardhats.

Mr. Quesnel shared important information as he opened the groundbreaking event, explaining how much growth we have seen across every division over the last two years. All of the students and faculty members applauded the need for more space on campus.

Senior Cam Saverino explained to the student body how she built important, invaluable relationships with friends and teachers at Oakwood Cam reminded us that we are building strong roots for tomorrow’s trees to withstand anything 6th grader Neha Sreeram shared her excitement for the new space for the Lower and Middle School Innovation Lab

Ms. Christine will have the pleasure of working out of a new, welcoming Main Entrance. She’s been welcoming students to Oakwood for over 20 years and can’t wait for the new space. She helped PK3 student Ford Davis share his excitement. Finally, we were able to offer everyone an opportunity to shovel the groundbreaking dirt.

We topped off the ground breaking party with cake It was a historic celebration for Oakwood!

Dear Oakwood Community,

I write to you today with a tremendous sense of enthusiasm and anticipation. It is my privilege to share some remarkable news regarding our school's future – an endeavor that calls upon each and every one of us to be "ALL IN. "

Our journey into the future will be guided by our ALL IN Capital Campaign, a transformative effort that embodies the very essence of our school's mission and values. As you already know, we are a community dedicated to growth, excellence, and the well-being of our students. This campaign is a testament to our commitment to these principles

My family has been “ALL IN” at Oakwood since we first visite campus six years ago and felt the warm sense of community that defines the school My wife, Ellyn, and I have watched both our children thrive here despite them being two very different people with unique strengths and interests

A 2023 Oakwood alum, our daughter is now excelling in college thanks to the individualized education and nurturing she received at Oakwood Meanwhile, our son is a Senior at Oakwood who benefits daily from the commitment of Oakwood’s faculty and the opportunities the school gives him. We are so thankful for what Oakwood has provided our children, so it is our pleasure to give back to current and future Oakwood students.

This campaign is about every member of our community coming together and demonstrating our unwavering commitment to the growth and prosperity of Oakwood. You are an essential part of this exciting endeavor, and your involvement is pivotal.

We will share more details about this campaign as it unfolds, and I encourage you to stay connected and engaged as we embark on this adventure together. The success of "ALL IN" is, in every sense, a shared journey, and we are eager to have you join us as champions of this exciting future

Thank you for your ongoing support and for making Oakwood such a remarkable community Together, we are Oakwood Strong, and we are "ALL IN "

Go Eagles!

Celebration Dinner 2024

On behalf of The Oakwood School community, we want to extend our sincerest gratitude for joining us at theALL IN Celebration Dinner on April 24, 2024. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and to connect with new friends who share our passion for providing exceptional educational opportunities for our students Your support and dedication to Oakwood's growth and success are invaluable, and we are deeply appreciative of your ongoing contributions

Most importantly, we had the opportunity to reflect on the remarkable journey of our school and to celebrate the milestones we have achieved together. From the dedication of our founding families to the unwavering support of our current community, each of you plays a vital role in shaping Oakwood's future.

As we look ahead to the future, we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for Oakwood. With your continued support, we can build upon our foundation of excellence and ensure that every student has the resources and opportunities they need to thrive

If you were unable to attend the ALL IN Celebration Dinner but would still like to contribute to Oakwood's success, there are several ways you can get involved. Whether through a donation to the ALL IN Capital Campaign or volunteering your time and talents, every contribution makes a difference.

Thank you again for your unwavering support of The Oakwood School. Together, we are building a brighter future for our students and our community!

A Part of History

Our students and staff have left their mark! By signing the beams in the new Founders Hall (Lower School) addition, Oakwood history has been made These aren’t just signatures, they’re the foundation of memories that will last a lifetime Here’s to building a brighter future together!

Allen is originally from Northern NY and Kimberly is from Havelock, NC Their family has been in Greenville for over 20 years, and they both work in the pharmaceutical industry. They have three children: Allen, Adrianna ’27 and Hampton ‘32. Both Adrianna and Hampton started in PK4 at Oakwood.

Kimberly and Allen are pleased to share their reasons for supporting the Annual Fund:

"We are so grateful for the educational opportunity that Oakwood provides for our children and our community very day we see the engagement of our children, faculty, nd parents. At Oakwood, we know our children are in a safe nd caring environment, with teachers who are genuinely ommitted to their success

Our children are learning how to learn, and not what to learn hey are learning how to be problem solvers and critical hinkers, preparing for their future with STEAM-driven principles and resources We also know that the success of The Oakwood School is dependent on a strong partnership between the faculty, the students, and the parents. We are all aligned and engaged toward the same goal: to provide the best educational opportunity and environment for our children

The Annual Fund is a key source of funds that supports the school’s mission for our children

We know how hard you work for your money and how valuable and limited your time is, so the key objective we had this year was 'Smart, Strategic Giving'. This ensures that we get the most value out of each gift.

Participation in the Annual Fund is critical We had 100% board participation and 100% faculty and staff participation That kind of support from our board members, faculty, and staff really shows the commitment to our children and school We are confident that supporting Oakwood is a solid investment in your child's future "

The Oakwood School’s Blue Jean Ball is the biggest party of the year for our community. This remarkable annual fundraising event benefitted The Oakwood School and celebrated MARDI GRAS at TowneBank Tower (ECU's Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium). Silent and Live Auction items were up for grabs, creating quite a buzz about who was the next Head of School For the Day.

There were a variety of raffles from which to choose. Thank you to Bailey’s Fine Jewelry who helped with the “bling ring” raffle, including new jewelry and other prizes for the winners. Michelle Kearney and Laura Lloyd took home the prize for the tuition raffle Congrats!

Plus, attendees could get their favorite team of teachers, coaches, parents, and alumni to the "fund" zone by donating towards Oakwood's 2024 Fund-A-Need supporting fun, new outdoor play equipment!

Some of the items on our outdoor upgrades include:

- Sandbox revitalization

- New swings for our 1st-3rd grade playground

- Gaga Ball Pit for our 3rd-7th grade students

- Soccer Goal for our Upper School

The night was spent enjoying Oakwood’s signature Hurricane Oakley cocktail, sitting with friends to sample New Orleans cuisine, and bopping along to the live brass band.

Thank you to our Oakwood community who makes this event a success each year!

Thank you for your support:
