Your Flight Advantage
...focus on remembering whose you are
We remind teens they’re meant to fly
I have had many pets throughout my life, but one of my favorites so far are the runner ducks I currently have. If you have never seen or heard about runner ducks, they basically are tall ducks that can’t fly. They only run. My two-foot tall fence keeps them where I want them to stay. However, I also have a mallard duck that hatched with them. Even though the mallard is able to fly away at any time, he doesn’t know he can because he’s always been around his three runner friends. He just sticks with them and does what they do. That can be true in our lives too, especially in high school. Friends and teachers who fill so many hours of a teen’s day have an incredible influence. Who will we run with? There are those who may try to convince us that we can’t fly or that we have only this life to think about. Heard the term YOLO? “You only live once” is sometimes used to get us to focus on the “right now” like there’s nothing else after this life. We have a special blessing here at Lakeside. When students, faculty and staff share a belief in Jesus as their Savior with no fear or reluctance to admit it, we can guide and encourage each other in that saving grace given to us through Jesus. We are free. We are saved. We are forgiven. We’ll live forever! As a result, We are not bound to the ground. We know there is more to us than just wandering around this pen we call life. One day we will fly out of this Earth and not only be free from sin but also have eternal joy in heaven. There is no better truth to be reminded of every day. Ask me about my ducks!
Steve Lauber, Admissions Director on the cover
In 2010, a mama duck discovered that our LLHS courtyard was a beautiful, safe place to hatch her babies. Unfortunately, our courtyard is all walled-in. Because ducklings can’t fly out, too soon they run out of food and are at danger of becoming prey. As a result, a human crew is formed each spring to usher the ducklings through the school and out to the real world (nearby Rock Lake). It’s a bittersweet tradition on campus. We love seeing those ducklings, but we know they are onto bigger things. It’s the same for our students. We love having them on campus for these four short years, and we’re a bit sad when they leave. Yet we also know that when our Warriors graduate and head to the military, tech school, college or workforce, they are well-equipped to be faithful employees, citizens, family members, and witnesses for Jesus.
