Your Flight Advantage

...focus on remembering whose you are

We remind teens they’re meant to fly

I have had many pets throughout my life, but one of my favorites so far are the runner ducks I currently have. If you have never seen or heard about runner ducks, they basically are tall ducks that can’t fly. They only run. My two-foot tall fence keeps them where I want them to stay. However, I also have a mallard duck that hatched with them. Even though the mallard is able to fly away at any time, he doesn’t know he can because he’s always been around his three runner friends. He just sticks with them and does what they do. That can be true in our lives too, especially in high school. Friends and teachers who fill so many hours of a teen’s day have an incredible influence. Who will we run with? There are those who may try to convince us that we can’t fly or that we have only this life to think about. Heard the term YOLO? “You only live once” is sometimes used to get us to focus on the “right now” like there’s nothing else after this life. We have a special blessing here at Lakeside. When students, faculty and staff share a belief in Jesus as their Savior with no fear or reluctance to admit it, we can guide and encourage each other in that saving grace given to us through Jesus. We are free. We are saved. We are forgiven. We’ll live forever! As a result, We are not bound to the ground. We know there is more to us than just wandering around this pen we call life. One day we will fly out of this Earth and not only be free from sin but also have eternal joy in heaven. There is no better truth to be reminded of every day. Ask me about my ducks!

Steve Lauber, Admissions Director on the cover

In 2010, a mama duck discovered that our LLHS courtyard was a beautiful, safe place to hatch her babies. Unfortunately, our courtyard is all walled-in. Because ducklings can’t fly out, too soon they run out of food and are at danger of becoming prey. As a result, a human crew is formed each spring to usher the ducklings through the school and out to the real world (nearby Rock Lake). It’s a bittersweet tradition on campus. We love seeing those ducklings, but we know they are onto bigger things. It’s the same for our students. We love having them on campus for these four short years, and we’re a bit sad when they leave. Yet we also know that when our Warriors graduate and head to the military, tech school, college or workforce, they are well-equipped to be faithful employees, citizens, family members, and witnesses for Jesus.

Lakeside Lutheran Advantage Contest #25

SHOW US YOUR PET!

Mr. Lauber told you about his runner ducks on page 2. Did you know he also has pigeons and doggos? (He’s even been known to bring some to school—ask him about puppy chapel time!) Since he shared his pets, how about sharing yours? But not just your pet ... we want your pet to show some pride too. Can you put your Warrior shirt on your pet like Mr. Lauber did? Do you have a Warrior sticker on your fish tank? How about putting a water bottle next to your cat, or getting your chinchilla to hold your LLHS pencil? What LL item could you balance on your turtle’s shell? Be creative! Add a thought bubble to the pic & mention Lakeside. Make a homemade sign. Pose with your pet while you wear Warrior gear! We love it all

Your Daily Advantage

...focus on a day in the life of a Warrior Sometimes grade schoolers wonder how days in high school are different from theirs. Want to know what it’s like to spend a day as a freshman at Lakeside? Brooke Parkhurst, class of 2024, let us follow her around for a day last spring. Remember, not everyone has the same schedule...for instance, many freshmen include a study hall each day or take a world language or art class. Warriors have about 4 minutes to get to their next class, which is plenty of time, believe it or not!

7:10 Brooke leaves her house to head to the bus stop in Johnson Creek. Some teens need to leave earlier. • • • • • • • • • •

8:00 (Period 1): Computer Essentials (required for freshman every other day/study hall opposite days) 8:47 (Period 2): Engineering Essentials (Brooke is part of our STEM Academy.) 9:35 Chapel / Meeting or Homeroom time 10:00 (Period 3): General Science (All students are required to take 3 credits in Science.) 10:47 (Period 4-5): Band (Freshmen must take a fine arts credit. When registering, the default class is Freshman Chorus, but you can opt to take band instead, like Brooke did. Some take both.) 11:36 Lunch 6: Many students’ favorite part of the day! (The whole “period 4-5, 5-6, 6-7, 7-8 thing” during lunch got you confused? Don’t worry. You’ll catch on quickly as soon as you’re here! ) 12:03 (Period 7-8): Old Testament (Students take a religion class every year. Christ in Everything!) >> 12:51 (Period 9): Algebra 1 (Students take a placement test in May to determine which path of math courses to take. All students are required to take at least 3 credits in Math.) 1:40 (Period 10): English 9 (All students are required to take 4 credits in English.) 2:27 (Period 11): Phy Ed (Every freshman is required to take P.E. In grades 10-12, phy ed is an elective.)

3:17 If Brooke goes home right after school, she has 7 minutes after period 11 ends to board the bus, but if you’re involved in after-school activities like she is (and there are SO MANY to choose from) ...

the fun doesn’t stop at 3:10 PM! Brooke is involved in extracurriculars each season. Fall: Golf (Brooke was the alternate for the 2020 golf team that went to State. A freshman on varsity? Awesome!) Winter: Bowling Club practices at the local bowling center 2-3 days/week with weekend tournaments. Spring: Drama (She played Axel Hammond, a sarcastic best friend, in the 2021 comedy production of The Nerd.) Summer: Brooke marches and plays the sax in the Warrior Band that went to St. Louis in July 2021 and heads to the Calgary Stampede in Alberta, Canada next summer!

Want to experience a day in person? We love “shadows.” Call Mr. Lauber (920-648-2321 x2218) or email him (slauber@llhs.org) to find out how and when it could happen for you.

Your Core Advantage ...focus on our first core value

Why choose Lakeside? Christ is in everything. You have a choice when it comes to high schools. Why choose Lakeside? Because we offer advantages—for now and for the future. In a recent issue, we introduced the five core values of your Lakeside Lutheran—Christ in Everything, Excellence, Servant Leadership, Family, and Accountability. Now we’re digging a little deeper into each. What does “Christ in Everything” mean?

It all starts and ends with Jesus. Every school day, teens and adults are reminded that our identity as God’s child is already secure. Then, every class helps teens expand thinking, find interests, and determine how their specific gifts can be used for God’s glory. And it doesn’t even end with curriculum and chapel messages. He’s in the classrooms, the halls, the walls, the building, the campus. He dominates the teams, the groups, the travel. We pray that we always make a point to include Christ in EVERYTHING at Lakeside! While our faith focus and widespread spiritual encouragement give teens an advantage now, that advantage continues into the future. Whether grads join the workforce, attend a technical college or four-year university, or join the military, we consistently hear from business leaders, colleges, and employers who comment on the advantage they have in hiring or enrolling Lakeside grads who are solid students, faithful employees, and dedicated to do their best.
