THE GUEST ROOM
Offer a Five Star Boutique Hotel Experience
BY DIANE FIELD
There are two types of guest rooms. Those that are purposely created to serve this purpose. And those that shelter visitors by default. They may be called the same thing, but similarities stop at the threshold.
A proper guest room is a faithful extension of the larger household. Design, colors, furnishings are simply extrapolated to yet another room, albeit one infrequently occupied. The test is when one party in the master bedroom has a bad night (e.g., snoring), and the violated party moves down the hall, to report next morning that they had the best sleep—ever.
The less hospitable room mimics a consignment shop. The vintage mattress began its tenure in residence #1, surviving two moves, fuller on its left half due to extended storage on its side. The night
table lamps were Granny’s favorites: Currier and Ives images, yellowed shades. And soap and shampoo bear Best Western logos. We may tend to forget that the “guests” in question are almost always people who we cherish most in life. They are family members. They are dear, dear friends. They are people, perhaps, who we’re just getting to know, but really want a relationship. So too, they are likely to have traveled to see us. Suffering through airlines and time zones, unhealthy food, little to no sleep— the deprivations of modern transport. And should young ones be involved, well, it’s rough . . .
This article addresses how to elevate the experience of guests from worn out on arrival to feeling pampered. There is a

shopworn saying that you don’t want to make guests too comfortable for fear they’ll never leave. It’s a cute sentiment—but nonsense. Put yourself in their shoes, and treat them to comforts they never expected to find. They’ll not forget the gesture—the effort you went to.
Decluttered Space. Remove personal effects from both the room and bathroom. Nearly all objects have outlived their useful life anyway—that’s why they’re there. Exceptions include a few family photographs, but ensure you’ve got the correct relatives displayed. You don’t want to require guests to live with castoffs. Exquisite Toiletries . Following the arrival rituals—hugs, introductions, excited chatter, tour of the house—it’s time for the guests to “freshen up.” Imagine her look when entering the bathroom to find a gift basket of holiday toiletries and goodies from a local specialty shop. She’ll be immediately rejuvenated, look forward to her evening rituals—and definitely want to visit that store.

Ample Storage. The guests arrive with four suitcases, two smaller bags, plus carryons. Instead of packing, then removing half, they add more. To help them manage their belongings, provide dedicated storage spaces. Bags and packed items should be separated for access. A freestanding (empty) armoire is perfect for clothing: rod and hangers, shelving for folded items, potpourri pouch. Place bags in the closet with boxes, ironing board, seasonal attire. Comfortable Chair. You may not have room for two chairs, but you must have one. It must be inviting, sufficiently large, genuinely relaxing. After all, shoes must be donned and removed, feet given a break. It is simply not acceptable for the bed to be the only place to sit. It is crucial to pair the chair with table for magazines, books, a beverage, pocket contents.
Usable Electronics. There is a flatscreen TV mounted on the wall across from the comfortable chair. It has an extension arm allowing the screen to be viewed from different directions. A table beneath the screen holds a remote control and printed card with typed directions for how to operate the room’s electronics. One bedside table holds a portable Bluetooth speaker. Coiled next to it are multiple phone charging cords. Sumptuous Towels. In the bathroom, the visitors find hand and bath towels purchased (it had to be!) for Royals. Thick and soft, generously sized, along with robes hanging on the back of the door. Folded neatly on a wicker table are two crisp sets of cotton pajamas. (She packed her own but

Countertop Vanity Mirror. It’s time for guests to shower and dress for dinner: The restaurant’s in town, car leaving in one hour. The bathroom has an overhead light, sconces bracketing a mirror, and — incredibly—a rectangular makeup mirror with LED illumination. Further, it’s paired with a swivel vanity stool. The lady can finally relax.
Exquisite Bed. The guest room is actually the place to showcase your finest bedding. It ties back to empathy—imagining what guests have gone through to visit you— physical discomforts, the disorientation of strange surroundings. Think of the immense pleasure they’ll derive from sliding into fine sheets, resting weary heads on malleable pillows, positioning
the glorious duvet to achieve an ideal temperature. It is the capstone to a marvelous day.
Darkened Room. The long row of windows facing east over the ocean is fitted with room darkening drapes. The guests are grateful. Sunrise is expected at 6:35 am. Breakfast, on the other hand, will be served ages later—at 8:30 am—meaning they can actually get some early morning sleep— absent the rising sun burning their eyes. They position the drapes carefully to ensure full coverage.
Artistic Lighting. Unable to fall asleep, there is a need to read for a brief time. Located within easy reach, a light switch with dimmer illuminates a bedside pendant. The guests have never seen such a thing; never imaged placing one in a bedroom; are mesmerized by its design, light, and glow cast across the room. Finished reading, they
turn the fixture down low and leave it on for the night.
Signature Fragrance. The guests slept well. While they hadn’t noticed it before, they notice it now, walking the room, opening the drapes, looking outside, welcoming the day. The space smells heavenly. Going into search mode, they find an electric diffuser next to the armoire (they had mistook it for a second speaker). Reading online, they learned about waterless cold air diffusion, atomization technology, fragrance oils becoming dry nano-mist, and the like. Why not treat your guests like the Royals that never showed? They deserve it. Everything about your home, your hospitality, your cooking, can be simply the best, but if guests feel out of place or second-rate in their room, then they’ll depart ever so slightly deflated. Don’t let that happen!

WALLCOVERINGS REDUX
EVERY WALL IS A BLANK CANVAS
BY DIANE FIELD
You’ve finally completed construction of your new home. Today is the first day following completion of the contractor’s punch list (you’ve got your own list to pursue!), and you’ve invited a friend to walk the entire home—room by room, closet by closet, cabinet by cabinet—by your side.
You open the front door, step into the entrance hall, and suddenly it hits you—not at all a comforting realization, in fact, it’s a shock—every wall is painted white and otherwise bare. Meaning, you’ve got to come up with a comprehensive plan for decorating every square inch of wall space! Your anxiety heightens as the tour progresses. Why hadn’t you acknowledged this earlier?
It can be said that many homeowners have been conditioned to envision wall décor to include three options: paint, wallpaper, and framed art. And even then, they’ve heard that wallpaper is passé—neither stylish nor fashionable, unchic. So the game plan would be to gather paint samples and start the (agonizing) selection process, while at the same time visit local galleries to scout for oil on canvases of all sizes.
Yet wait. The truth is that there are a number of things you can do to eliminate the whitewash. In fact, you might say that in this day and age, with all the brainpower, artistic talent, and materials science applied to the home sector—not to mention effortless access to a global offering of products—there are a plethora of options—literally—to consider. To be clear, the challenge is one of too many, not too few, choices to work through.
Here are a handful to get your creative juices flowing. Also, a few key insights to keep in mind as you wade in:
• Wall décor should be an extension of the overall design plan.
• Take a holistic approach and consider how all design features in a space work together.
• Balance and scale are crucial inputs.
• Look for ways to introduce texture and color.
• At the same time, don’t allow patterns and textures to compete visually.
• For a minimalist aesthetic, install items that are simple and clean.
Hive Trade Showroom, West Palm Beach. Gracie Wallpaper. Chinese scene called Skylark features flowering trees and bushes hand-painted in ivory and gray, with colorful birds and butterflies, all against a soft blue background.
WALLPAPER AND WALLCOVERING
These have never lost their aesthetic usefulness and power. Indeed, compared to just 20 years ago, the portfolio of products has exploded, opening up a world of possibilities. Ideally, wallpaper or wallcovering selections should be made in the beginning stages, informing other design choices, ensuring cohesiveness with fabrics and finishes. Select a pattern to add visual interest, movement, and mood; patterns can be modern, classic, bold; larger designs will bring drama; a limited color palette will keep the space feeling calm and serene.
Further, consider the room’s ceiling to be its fifth wall: add a unique covering or continue the room’s wallpaper upwards. For a penultimate statement, consider a wallpaper mural, filling an entire wall or incorporating an entire room. In Florida, floral and flower designs, tropical jungles, bring the outdoors in, creating a lush, verdant look, imparting the calmness and serenity of nature.
WOOD SLAT PANELING
Wood vertical slat wall panels introduce an organic and modern aesthetic to any space in the home. They have a transformative quality about them, an ability to immediately introduce a modern aesthetic and integrate the home’s interior with surrounding landscaping. Better still, they can be installed on ceilings and exterior walls as well. Typically, natural wood and real wood veneers include oak, walnut, maple, cherry, hickory, birch. Panels are easy to install, screwing into the wall directly or attached using construction glue. Some manufacturers offer felt acoustic backing to dampen sound.
CUSTOMIZED HEADBOARD
The bed is often positioned to be the focal point of a bedroom. Leveraging this, a customized (e.g., upholstered or built-in) headboard amplifies this effect and itself can become a central design feature. A gorgeous wood headboard—contemporary or antique—is timeless. Alternatively, an
upholstered headboard extends and ties together colors, patterns, textures. Discard the notion that a headboard’s dimensions should be mathematically dictated by mattress/frame size—you can build one and go as large as you want.
CONTEMPORARY TAPESTRY
Here is an opportunity to introduce a novel design. We’re not calling to mind gigantic English tapestries found in palaces, nor traditional textile macrame wall hangings produced using knotting techniques. Rather, what we’re calling attention to is an entirely different class of art form, introducing layers, textures, details, as visually and spatially powerful as any wall covering, any painting. We recommend you go online and look at examples—you’ll concede our point. Modern macrame can be amazing. The magic happens when you find the perfect place to display a favorite find.
GALLERY WALL
This is a timeless decorative feature created by hanging artwork and/or photographs of differing sizes in close proximity to each other in a skillfully arranged configuration. The visual effect can be striking and the display can be deeply personal, showcasing loved ones, treasured memories, travel destinations, and art purchases. Keep in mind that this can be a do-it-yourself undertaking, or you can hire a professional to do this—and achieve something rather remarkable—far beyond what you’d ever imagine.
MIRROR, MIRROR
Reflected light can help a small room feel bigger and brighter. Going back to the 1970-1980 period, many homes were built with entire walls of floor-to-ceiling mirrors—many of which still exist, although decidedly dated. Try to get this image out of your mind. A well placed large mirror adds another visual dimension to a space. Clever placement also brings height and symmetry to a room. Long gone are the days when mirrors would come in simple frames— today, mirrors come in all shapes and sizes with frames constructed of all types of materials, giving you an opportunity to make the frame reflect who you are.
ANTIQUE PLATES
This is a brief, loving call out to a beloved Uncle Roger Lussier, who was a design and fashion fixture in the Boston of my youth. Roger hung a collection of antique French porcelain plates on his dining room wall to dramatic effect. Elegant, understated, inspirational—like the person he was. I will always love these displays.
GUEST DESIGNER
GREGORY ALLAN NESS, PRINCIPAL DESIGNER
Gregory Allan Ness has spent more than two decades helping his clients realize the homes of their dreams. A career that began in high-end residential development turned into an unmistakable passion for interior design that has led to international success. In 2017, Gregory returned to his childhood home of Vero Beach to open Coastal Interiors, located at 660 Beachland Blvd, Suite 204. He is happy to be designing the finest of homes on the barrier island while enjoying the ability to be closer to his family and friends.
This room with a view is a welcome respite after a long day on the links for our Orchid Island client. As an avid golfer, he was immediately drawn to the beautiful golf course view from this second floor oversized room. Having its own private staircase, it was perfect for his home office and secluded “get away” while in residence.
1. From the beginning, the client and I both shared a vision that the room should be of neutral tones and textures in order to not obstruct the view and draw the eye outside.
2. On a similar note, we decided to forgo the normal drapery panels so that all three sets of French doors would be completely unobstructed and bring the outside in.
3. We replaced the softness and texture of drapery panels with a beautiful textured geometric grasscloth wallpaper from Scalamandre.
4. Both the desk and console behind it appear to be floating in the room on acrylic legs. We wanted to keep heavy furniture pieces to a minimum in the space in order to not stop the eye and distract from the view.
5. The pullout sofa serves double duty. It can be used for lounging or a quick, but quiet afternoon nap. It also serves as an additional sleeping area when the growing family is visiting from Canada.

TRENDS TO WATCH IN 2025
REVIVAL
BY CHRISTOPHER MCINTOSH |
PHOTOS BY VICTORIYA KNAPP
s we step into 2025, the world of interior design is undergoing a vibrant transformation, with carpets making a remarkable comeback. Once overshadowed by the popularity of hardwood, laminate, and luxury vinyl, carpets are redefining their role in our homes, bringing a cozy, stylish flair back to flooring choices
At the forefront of this revival is Niki & Jonathan Fuller, co-owners of Owens Custom Rugs in Vero Beach, who emphasize the shift in how carpets are perceived. “Carpets are no longer just a practical choice; they’re becoming central to the design narrative of a room,” Niki explains. “Homeowners and designers are now using carpets to make bold statements, creating focal points that truly reflect individual style.” One of the standout trends of 2025 is the embrace of bold patterns and vibrant colors. Niki notes, “We’re seeing everything from geometric designs to abstract motifs. These carpets are not just functional—they’re artistic expressions.” This shift allows homeowners to showcase their personalities, with carpets becoming integral to the overall aesthetic of their spaces.
Texture is another significant trend this year. Fuller points out that “soft, plush carpets are back in vogue, providing a luxurious feel underfoot.” Whether it’s a deep shag for the living room or a cozy wool rug in the bedroom, the focus is on comfort and relaxation. Natural materials are also making waves, as sustainability becomes increasingly important. “We’re seeing a growing demand for eco-friendly options,” Niki says, highlighting the popularity of carpets made from recycled and renewable materials like wool and jute.
Customization is key in 2025’s carpet trends. Jonathan emphasizes, “Homeowners want personalized touches that reflect their tastes. Custom patterns, colors, and even shapes are becoming the norm.” This trend empowers individuals to create unique spaces that resonate with their personal styles, making

every room truly one-of-a-kind.
Color choices continue to evolve as well. While earthy and neutral tones remain popular for their versatility, there’s a rising interest in bold pops of color. “Unexpected color combinations can completely transform a room,” Jonathan explains.
“We’re seeing carpets that serve as vibrant focal points, adding energy and character to both residential and commercial spaces.”
“Custom rugs are a beautiful way to add a personal touch to any room, turning your space into a visual masterpiece. Not only do they elevate the aesthetic of your home, but their portability and low-maintenance qualities make them a practical choice as well” says Niki.
At Owens Custom Rugs, they go above and beyond by using sustainable, natural materials, offering expert advice, and providing personalized service tailored to each client’s unique needs. Since 1978, Owens has been at the forefront of custom floor design, giving you the freedom to create the perfect rug for your home. With Owens, you can bring both balance and beauty to your space with a rug that perfectly reflects your style and enhances your surroundings.
In summary, the carpet trends of 2025 signal a significant departure from the past. Carpets are no longer merely functional; they are dynamic design elements that elevate the style and comfort of our interiors. With bold patterns, luxurious textures, sustainable materials, and innovative technology, carpets are reclaiming their place as a vital aspect of modern home design. As they both aptly conclude, “Carpets are back, and they’re here to make a statement.”

LEARNING FROM NATURE'S FURY
BY JIM FIELD | PHOTOS BY LIV VERO STAFF
My wife and I have now lived through six hurricane seasons.
The risk of storm damage had been theoretical until Hurricane Milton, October 9-10. Then, shockingly, it wasn’t some other place getting slammed—it was our community.
People are mystified by those living in areas prone to natural disasters. Texas and Kansas average the most tornados. California is plagued by earthquakes, fires, mudslides, flooding. And Florida, Texas, and North Carolina top the list for tropical
cyclones—i.e., hurricanes.
What explains the mindset of this populace? (Hey, we should know.) Clearly, there’s pure denial. More principled, individuals play the odds: “There’s a small probability of getting hit, and I’m comfortable with this.” Finally, there are those who accept the inevitability of disaster, yet assume personal escape is possible due to fate, luck, prayer.
Fair enough. We all have our own equation. Still, if we roll the dice each year, then you’d think there’d be a reciprocal obligation to prepare for the “big one” lurking.
I’m not suggesting survivalist tactics, only that we take basic precautions to reduce our vulnerability to a worst-case scenario, which
makes less powerful storms incrementally less threatening. Unfortunately, most of us— myself included—make halfhearted efforts— beholden to optimistic expectations.
Acknowledging human nature, this article is an exhortation to do better. We have six months until Hurricane Season 2025 begins (June 1). We should—no, must—learn what Hurricane Milton teaches and act on this hard-earned knowledge.
LESSON #1: TROPICAL CYCLONE STATISTICS
Florida is hit by more hurricanes than any other state—roughly 40% of 300 recorded hurricanes making U.S. landfall. Since 1930, Vero Beach has been impacted by 73 hurricanes. On average, Vero is brushed by a hurricane every 2.4 years. Average duration between a direct hurricane hit is 6.2 years. Average years between a major hurricane hit is 21.2 years. Takeaway: Hurricanes are integral to Vero Beach life.
LESSON #2: TORNADO STATISTICS
Hurricanes are fearsome, tornados can be worse. Major hurricane winds—Cat 3 and 4—measure 111 mph and higher, the mass averaging 10-15 mph across land. Tornadoes average 30 mph over land and can generate winds over 200 mph. Almost all hurricanes spawn at least one tornado—Hurricane Milton spawned 46 in Florida. We have experienced a tornado cross water to an island. I ignored every broadcast tornado warning. I have no designated shelter room. I will never react the same—ignorant. Takeaway: Include tornados in your disaster planning.
LESSON #3: RAINWATER MANAGEMENT
Flooding results from heavy rainfall occurring in a short time period. Homeowners must channel this water away from the home to drains and collection areas on the property, or off-property if appropriate. This requires mapping each downspout’s output, installing French drains and/or underground drainage pipes. With three inches of rainfall, my roof collects 9,000 gallons; with five inches, 15,000 gallons. Takeaway: Manage every drop of rainfall on your property.
LESSON
#4: IMPACT WINDOWS AND DOORS
A video online shows a Hurricane Milton tornado enveloping a home, the owner filming inside. Suddenly, an object shatters glass, spelling doom. Fortunately, the home had impact doors and windows, preventing wind/debris/rain from entering. Storms are unpredictable and can arrive quickly. Impact windows and doors are always
deployed. Garage doors are especially vulnerable and often not hardened. Takeaway: Invest in impact technology for ultimate safety and peace of mind.
LESSON #5: TREES AND LANDSCAPING
We love live oak trees. We devote ourselves to beautiful landscapes. However, similar care and attention are often not given to preparing these valued assets for hurricane season. On many properties, landscaping is left to grow unchecked, trees, palms, shrubs touching and overhanging the home. Insight: Keep landscaping off your home and maintained to accommodate 75 mph gusts.
LESSON #6: ROOFING AND GUTTERS
Home insurance requirements are reducing the number of older roofs. Regardless of age, homeowners are prudent to have their roof inspected prior to each hurricane season. Any fault in a roof will be tested by and magnified in a storm. Clogged gutters can result in water leakage inside walls. Insight: Go into hurricane season knowing you’ve taken every step to prevent water penetration.
LESSON
#7: EMERGENCY GENERATORS
If you plan to ride out storms in your home, it makes sense to purchase a generator. This is particularly the case if you live in an area with above-ground power lines and old growth trees. Portable generators will last as long as you have fuel and power some electric needs. On the island, fixed propane generators are limited by the capacity of buried tanks. Insight: Even temporary relief from power grid loss is worth a lot in dire conditions.
“Nothing protects trees from hurricanes, but regular maintenance helps. Live oaks should be pruned to remove dead and damaged wood and also thin interior foliage to allow strong winds to pass through tree canopies. Palms require less work, but trim dead fronds and heavy fruits (like coconuts) to reduce projectiles.”
—Frank LaRosa, Scott Tree Services
LESSON #8: PERSONAL READINESS
With a major storm approaching, gather important personal belongings: computers, documents, keys, chargers, cash and credit cards, medications, flashlights, etc. Pack clothing and toiletries. Assume you’ll vacate your home for a week. Prepare coolers with beverages and food. If you have pets, pack food, leashes, towels. A key decision is whether to leave the island. Remember, once bridges close, the island is cut off from all but emergency medical treatment. Insight: If your health is precarious and/or dependent upon electricity, relocate to the mainland.
Chris Vick, Bethel Creek resident: "Shuttering the house likely saved us. Neighborhood kids helped clear debris, revealing utter devastation outside."
An Exquisite Dinner
Presented by Two Vero Beach Talents
BY CHRIS FOSTER AND JOSHUA MCMILLER PHOTOS BY CHRIS CRONIN MEDIA
magine stepping into a magical winter wonderland inspired by the festive charm of European holiday markets and the nostalgia of cherished family traditions. Our goal was to create an ambiance that brings together timeless local treasures from nearby thrift shops, farms, and florists, resulting in a chic, cozy, and memorable December dining experience.
With the help of a talented circle of local friends, we brought this vision to life with an elegant table setting and dining experience that will keep guests enchanted long after the final sip of mulled wine. The secret to unforgettable entertaining is engaging all the senses. It starts with the aroma—warm, spicy scents that evoke the holiday magic of Berlin’s open markets. Every detail was chosen with intention, creating an atmosphere that wraps guests in warmth, joy, and excitement. True holiday magic happens when every sense is delighted, so we carefully curated sights, sounds, tastes, and aromas to make this event extraordinary. This isn’t just

THE TABLE AND MOOD
We believe there’s nothing more rewarding than guests entering a space that captivates them visually and sensually. Setting the right ambiance is more than just décor: It’s about crafting a space that makes each guest feel welcomed. Holidays in Florida have their own unique charm, but sometimes, adding a bit of winter magic indoors creates that warm, festive atmosphere.
For this gathering, we chose whites, deep wine reds, silver, and touches of gold to evoke a cozy, wintry feel. Affirmation cards

• 1 tablespoon each chopped fresh rosemary and thyme
ROASTING GLAZE

at each place setting add a thoughtful, personal touch. Perhaps there is no better way to welcome (and honor) guests than a few chosen words to convey “I know and appreciate you.”
THE FLOWERS AND CENTERPIECE
Centerpieces are the heart of the table, setting a cohesive and inviting tone. We chose roses for their timeless appeal, focusing on rich reds softened by purples. Clusters of deep purple grapes add texture and visual interest, creating a lush and harmonious look.
Every floral element is purposefully connected to draw guests into the artistic statement and moment. The size of the centerpiece is critical: too small and an opportunity to bedazzle is lost, too large and the physical presence of diners is diminished, sightlines broken, cross-table conversations made difficult.
THE ENTRÉE
The menu is designed to savor each thoughtfully prepared dish. The star of the evening is a succulent pork tenderloin with a balsamic fig reduction paired with velvety butternut squash, herb-infused rosemary potatoes, roasted baby carrots, and a bright touch of fresh pomegranates. Each element adds warmth, depth, and elegance.
THE DESSERT
No holiday gathering would be complete without a touch of sweetness. One of our signature creations is Gingerbread Fruit Cake, a refined take on the holiday classic, perfectly complemented with cognac. Fruitcake dates back to ancient Egypt, where long-lasting cakes were entombed with royals for a sweet journey to the afterlife.
THE FRAGRANCE
Fragrance plays a powerful role in entertaining. Research shows that scent can deeply influence mood and emotions, making it the perfect starting point for engaging guests. Here are our top picks: M Boutique Intl’s Whiskey Black Raspberry Candle. A favorite of ours, this candle captivates with the rich aroma of aged whiskey, complemented by black raspberry, oakmoss, patchouli, white cedar, violet, and vanilla. It’s a luxurious sensory journey. Available at mboutiqueintl.com.
Nest Candles’ Holiday Classic. A timeless choice, this candle blends pomegranate, mandarin orange, pine, cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, and amber, evoking the warmth and spirit of the season. Available at nestinnewyork.com.
THE SOUND
No holiday gathering is complete without
the perfect playlist. Music sets the mood and ties the entire evening together with its flow and harmony. Hint: select “shuffle” to curate a blend of timeless and contemporary tunes for a seamless, festive vibe. Our go-to favorites include:
• Nat King Cole’s Christmas Classics
• Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas
• Michael Bublé’s Christmas
• Samara Joy’s A Joyful Holiday – a fresh and exciting talent for something new

Elevating Home Luxury
The Rise of Wet Rooms
BY CHRISTOPHER MCINTOSH
As homeowners brace for skyrocketing maintenance costs that could exceed $10,000 a year, many are turning their attention to the luxury of their bathrooms. In the realm of home design, wet rooms have emerged as a standout trend, blending functionality with elegance. Traditionally associated with spacious layouts, these chic sanctuaries are now being embraced in smaller, more compact spaces, redefining the concept of luxury in the bathroom.
WHAT IS A WET ROOM?
At its core, a wet room is a waterproof bathroom design that combines a shower and tub in a unified space. Unlike traditional setups where tubs and showers are separated, wet rooms create a seamless flow, enhancing both aesthetic appeal and usability. This approach not only maximizes space but also offers a spalike experience right at home.
According to the 2025 Houzz Home Design Trends Report, the popularity of wet rooms is surging, particularly in narrow or compact layouts. “Placing a tub at the back of a long room, with a separate shower in front, gives homeowners with tight spaces a wet room arrangement that looks and feels more luxurious than the standard shower-tub combo,” explains designer Deb Daly, Owner of Decorative Arts here in Vero. This innovative layout not only capitalizes on available space but also infuses the bathroom with a sense of openness and sophistication.
WHY WET ROOMS?
The allure of wet rooms lies in their ability to transform mundane bathing rituals into a luxurious experience. Homeowners are increasingly seeking environments that
promote relaxation and wellness, and wet rooms deliver just that. The absence of bulky shower curtains or doors enhances the feeling of spaciousness, while highend finishes—like natural stone tiles and elegant fixtures—further elevate the space. Moreover, wet rooms offer practicality that appeals to modern homeowners. They are easier to clean than traditional bathrooms, with fewer barriers for water and dirt to accumulate. This simplicity of maintenance is a significant advantage, especially for those balancing busy lifestyles with the demands of homeownership.
DESIGNING YOUR WET ROOM
Creating the perfect wet room involves careful planning and consideration. Start by assessing your space and determining how best to allocate the square footage. A common approach is to install the bathtub at the far end of the room, which not only creates a focal point but also allows for a clear division between the shower and tub areas. This layout works particularly well in narrower bathrooms, where maximizing space is crucial.
Choosing the right materials is essential for both functionality and style. Waterproof wall finishes, such as tile or glass, are vital

to prevent water damage, while a highquality floor drain will help manage water flow effectively. Natural materials like stone or ceramic can enhance the aesthetic appeal, while also providing slip-resistant surfaces.
Lighting is another key consideration. Ambient lighting can create a soothing atmosphere, while task lighting around the shower and tub areas ensures safety and usability. Installing dimmers allows you to adjust the brightness according to your mood, transforming your wet room into a tranquil retreat after a long day.
THE LUXURY FACTOR
Wet rooms epitomize luxury, offering a customizable canvas that reflects personal style and preferences. Homeowners can opt for high-end fixtures, such as rainfall showerheads and freestanding tubs, to create a spa-like atmosphere. Incorporating features like heated floors, built-in shelving for toiletries, and advanced water management systems can further enhance the experience.
For those looking to go the extra mile, integrating smart technology can elevate a wet room to new heights. Smart
showers that allow you to pre-set water temperatures, lighting systems that adjust with your mood, and automated ventilation systems for humidity control are just a few examples of how technology can enhance comfort and convenience.
A WORTHWHILE INVESTMENT
Investing in a wet room can significantly increase a home’s value, particularly as more buyers seek out luxury amenities. In a competitive real estate market, a welldesigned wet room can set your property apart, attracting potential buyers who appreciate both style and function. While the initial costs of creating a wet room can be significant, the long-term benefits often outweigh the investment. Homeowners can expect to see a return on investment through increased home value, reduced cleaning time, and enhanced daily living experiences.
FINAL THOUGHTS
As the trend towards luxury bathrooms continues to grow, wet rooms represent a compelling option for homeowners looking to elevate their spaces. By combining elegance with practicality, wet rooms offer a unique

solution that caters to the desires of modern living. Whether you’re working with a spacious layout or a compact area, the versatility of wet rooms makes them an attractive choice for anyone aiming to transform their bathroom into a personal oasis.
In a time when home maintenance costs are on the rise, investing in a wet room is not just about creating a beautiful space; it’s about enhancing your lifestyle and redefining what luxury means in your home. So, if you’re ready to make a statement and indulge in the ultimate bathroom experience, consider the transformative power of a wet room.
The Benefits

Bring on the Blues
A Vibrant Yet Nuanced Hue In Tropical Gardens
Few colors add dimension and contrast in the landscape as the color blue. It is, however, frequently missing in our swaths of greens here in Florida. It is time to sing the glories of the blues!
There are crisp frosty blues found in several palms that will bring a lovely contrast to the lush shades of emerald, dark green, and chartreuse that are the hallmarks of our tropical paradise. The 4’ wide blue-gray fronds of the mature Bismarck Palm (Bismarckia nobilis) are striking and command attention even from a distance. Their 40-70’ height is a spotlight of unabashed grandeur and belies a drought tolerant and fairly salt tolerant nature. This tree is best used as a specimen where it can stand as sentry to your home.
Take the silver blue of the Silver Dollar Eucalyptus tree (Eucalyptus cinerea). If space is limited, the eucalyptus is an excellent choice. Although this tree has been known to reach a height of 40’ in the wild, it typically matures at approximately 8’ in a garden setting. The large round evergreen leaves have an unusual grayblue cast, and can provide an aromatic scent throughout the garden. Its dense nature can be used as a windbreak for more delicate plantings. Aside from its usefulness in a floral arrangement, clip a branch to
The Bismark Palm
drape over your shower head for a savory scented spa experience.
The Silver Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a stunning and easy to grow choice to use as a backdrop for smaller plantings, a filler in a garden gap, or an accent in your landscape plan. The pointed fan-shaped leaves contrast sharply when placed amongst the soft curves of plants such as cardboard palm, clusia, and banana trees. This frosty palmetto is a showier version of the standard Florida palmetto, and serves to bring an element of architectural crispness in a garden of rounded and soft plantings.
The popular Silver Buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus var. sericeus) is not to be overlooked—this Florida native deserves attention. Adaptable to be grown as a clipped hedge, a manicured lollipop-shaped tree, or left to reach a height of 20’ and shaped by the design whims of the coastal wind, this plant is a chameleon. The soft leaves seem to shimmer when underlit at night and cast a cool silvery blue haze in full sun. Their salt tolerance makes it a smart choice for the coastal landscape and its flexible shape make it a blue ribbon winner in Florida.
Reaching a height of 2-6’ is the elegant Agapanthus. This South African native
sports a globe cluster of vibrant sapphire bell-shaped flowers atop tall stems reaching out of a bed of strappy leaves. An elegant addition to your landscape when planted in small masses, the green arching leaves provide a soft companion for surrounding plants when not in bloom. Plant in the border where the long lasting blooms can show off, or in a pot where it can bask in 6 hours of sunlight for best results.
Blues are not limited to the sunny areas of your landscape plan. For an unusual texture, consider the Abiqua Drinking Gourd Hosta (hybrid of Hosta sieboldiana and Hosta tokudama). The leathery surface of this blue-green hosta features strongly cup-shaped leaves in a dense mound reaching 18” tall. Place this dramatic plant in part to full shade where it can pop amongst the common shade plants such as ferns, liriope, and elephant ears. Other blue hostas to explore are Canadian Blue, Halcyon, and the impressive Colossal Blue which grows to 30-36”.
Looking for blues for your Florida garden, we would be remiss not to highlight Plumbago Blue Imperial (Plumbago auriculata). This sun loving mounding evergreen perennial sports masses of sapphire blue periodically throughout the
year, but more heavily from spring to fall. The delicate looking bright green leaves make a beautiful background to the bountiful blue clusters and are frequently placed as underplanting for stately palms or hedges. These resilient shrubs are quite drought tolerant once established and will grow to a height of 5’ if not trimmed. Last but not least is the underused Blue My Mind Evolvulus hybrid. This hardy trailing perennial prefers full sun but tolerates some shade, making it a can’t miss for most gardens. If your garden doesn’t have a spot for Blue My Mind, add it to a planter where it can be placed in the sun. Regular watering and occasional fertilizer will keep this profuse flowering gem in peak condition.
Adding blue to your landscape, whether by using the color and texture of leaves or flowering plants, will give your garden a new dimension. Adding contrast to green plantings will not only enhance existing collections but will provide an interesting facet to your space at night. The blue of the Bismarck palm, the eucalyptus and buttonwood trees, and the blue agave have a slight reflective quality when highlighted by landscape lighting, making your garden come alive as the greens fade to the background when the sun goes down.

MIND, SPIRIT, BODY, HEALTH
SALT THERAPY
Tapping Into a Building Block of Life
BY JIM FIELD
People profess to feeling better by the sea. Nature provides a psychological boost. Sun produces beneficial Vitamin D. And we breath salt air—its smell and taste primordial.
In my family going back generations there was always mention of “fresh salt air.” It was known to be therapeutic—no evidence offered—it just was.
Today, these proponents would claim vindication. Salt therapy has gained wide recognition as an alternative treatment for a range of ailments, everything from asthma to stress.
In this article, we’ll provide an overview of salt therapy—just enough to stimulate your curiosity.
EMPIRICAL BACKGROUND
Salt therapy traces back to salt mines and caves in Eastern Europe. In the 1840s, Polish physician Felix Boczkowski observed that salt miners didn’t experience lung disease compared to commoners. Capitalizing on this, he opened a health resort at the Wieliczka Salt Mine offering salt baths utilizing underground brine. In 1949, German physician Karl Spannagel
studied salt and respiratory health in underground settings. He surmised that in extracting salt—chiseling, hammering— micro-sized particles were disbursed into the air. In addition, subterranean air pressure and circulation, humidity and temperature created a unique host environment. His work laid the foundation for underground salt treatments.
TYPES OF SALT THERAPY
Salt therapy comprises a menu of delivery methods. In the U.S. and Canada, more than 2,000 facilities offer salt therapy of some kind, whether as a stand-alone service or add-on to an existing business. Here’s a mapping of salt therapy practices: Wet salt therapy. Includes saline solutions, nebulizers, salt baths, salt scrubs. Dry salt therapy. Delivered in a controlled space with various décor to create particular ambiances.
There are two types of dry salt therapy: Speleotherapy. Provided below the earth’s surface utilizing climate conditions and salt air found in caves, mines, chambers. Halotherapy. Provided in man-made environments utilizing a halogenerator, which breaks down salt into airborne particles.
Finally, applying this to a contemporary spa, there are two types of salt rooms:
Passive salt room (speleotherapy). Mimic European salt caves. Room filled with various salts—e.g., Himalayan, Dead Sea, Caribbean— and climate controlled by regulating airflow, humidity, temperature. Promotes relaxation, meditation, emotional well-being.
Active salt room (halotherapy). Employs halogenerator, into which pure sodium chloride is placed and ground into microsized particles and dispersed as aerosol to enter lungs and skin.
BENEFITS OF SALT ROOM THERAPY
Armies of individuals testify to the benefits of salt rooms—describing life-changing effects. That said, evidence of benefits in peer-reviewed journals is thin. However, don’t equate paucity with refutation, since few aspects of medicine (broadly defined) are well understood. In short: personal perceptions of benefit matter.
Salt is a natural, safe ingredient. Purported qualities include: mucoactive (clearing mucus), anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, immunity-boosting, anti-allergic.
Anecdotal outcomes support symptom relief and improved functional parameters in sinusitis, bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis, mild and moderate asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A simple explanation is that salt particles thin mucus, facilitating a productive cough, improving oxygenation.
Finally, online materials identify dozens of respiratory, skin, and psychological conditions where salt therapy may prove beneficial. Conversely, certain conditions (e.g., lung cancer, open wounds) are contraindications for halotherapy. Should you have questions, discuss salt therapy with a physician.
The Salt Salon & Spa in Vero Beach offers both active (halotherapy) and passive (speleotherapy) salt rooms. Visit www.saltvero.com and @saltvero.

FINDING PERSONAL MASTERPIECES
BY JIM FIELD
It’s a mystery worth pondering: Why do we fall in love with some art pieces and not others? What makes one deeply special, and others fall short? Why would we pay handsomely for one creation by an artist, and pass on a second for a dollar?
As a boy, I dreamed of topical islands. I adored Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe—I wanted to live those lives. After high school, I spent time in the Bahamas, hopping islands, snorkeling, eating little, sleeping wherever.
hopping islands, snorkeling, eating little, sleeping wherever. Later I spent years in the Philippines, going native. I began scuba diving at age 17, still today obsessed with life underwater.
This is the background I take into these paintings.
MIGRATION, OIL ON CANVAS, 36 X 60 INCHES
SETTING THE ANCHOR, OIL ON CANVAS, 11 X 14 INCHES
This is a small boat powered by a single outboard. The Bimini Top is lowered. They’re positioning to fish in the current, targeting larger species traversing the channel between islands. It’s a hot day, the fishermen cooling themselves with beer and brief swims. This is the day’s second fishing location, the first unproductive. Fishing three in a boat this size will be tight. It won’t bother me.
The Artist’s Narrative:
“In Migration, the viewer is placed above the scene with a bird’s eye view. The piece is composed almost as a compass, with key elements in it representing north, south, east, west. The land mass frames the composition on the east and north points. The focus now is primarily on the water surface and ocean floor with the boat on the west point and the osprey on the south. Both have migrated to the warmth and splendor of the tropics. Calligraphic brushstrokes combine in layers as they describe vertical and horizontal depth of field through the water, over the sculptural hillside, and through the thin air from a bird’s view down to the sailboat that defines the scale of the scene, gives us the ability to picture ourselves there.”
I'm drawn to answer this applied to myself. Two paintings, presented in this article, speak to my heart and emotions. The artist is Evan Schwarze, a Vero Beach resident. The first time I saw them they communicated directly with me. I studied the scenes, deciding that I wanted to take part in them—push “Play.”
As a boy, I dreamed of topical islands. I adored Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe—I wanted to live those lives. After high school, I spent time in the Bahamas,
I look at the land first, tracing the island’s perimeter, assuming it doesn’t extend much further beyond the right-hand border—it’s a fairly small island. I find no buildings, thus no inhabitants. I detect elevation on the right-hand land mass, affording a lookout vantage point. I’ll walk the shoreline searching for objects, inspecting the beach, quality of sand. Next I’ll traverse the island, scouting for nests, skeletons, crabs, human debris. I’m most interested in the water. Amazing visibility. Coral shoals and reefs. Navigable channels. Strong current off the island, almost nothing inshore. The two-masted vessel appears small—I’m, say, 1,000 feet high?—the bird is close by. I’m wondering what fish I’ll swim with. I’m thinking tarpon, usual reef fish, moray eels in the coral, nurse and reef sharks. I’ll spend days on the boat exploring.
@evan.schwarze
The Artist’s Narrative:
“In Setting the Anchor, the scene is simple with the viewpoint from a participant in the setting. Almost a hero shot of the mundane act of setting the anchor. The act is framed by the island landmass on either side, stretching back to the horizon, providing the depth of field and openness of space. The midday sky transitions light to dark accentuating that space, with the cloud mass on the left side balancing the focus of the palms and beach line on the right. The scene is aimed to invite the viewer to participate in enjoying the beauty of the everyday in this vivid and peaceful environment.”
Evan and wife Stephanie lived on the tiny Caribbean island of Culebra, where he painted and operated an art gallery for 10 years. He exhibits his work at Gallery 14 in the Vero Beach Art Village. evanschwarze.com |
