On our cover we feature Alejandra Llamas, a beautiful woman that has dedicated lots of studies and effort to mentor about “The Art of the Couple”, which is also the title of her most recent book. We were able to interview her and ask her a few questions not only about her but also about common difficulties that many couples are facing. We are sure this brief interview will engage you into reading her bestsellers books. On another note I wanted to leave our readers and advertisers some facts about our magazine. Live Doral Magazine was started in the summer of 2014. Since then, we have gotten to know so many wonderful residents of Doral and discovered so many of the amazing new businesses that have opened and invested their time and money into this growing city. Nutrition

#3 Disregard the Nutrition Facts

The truth is that we don’t need as much protein, calcium, or any other particular nutrient as we are led to believe. In fact, a balance diet consisting of plenty of whole foods will provide every possible nutrient your body needs to thrive without enslaving yourself to counting calories and carbs. Choose whole, plant food, and minimally-processed food and your health and weight will be just fine.

#4 Order Matters

T

he number of overweight young adults in the US has increased exponentially over the last 30 years. The number of overweight children ages 6 to 11 has quadrupled. In children of ages 12 to 19, it has tripled. The rates of cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes have also tripled. Why this huge increase? Because everything related to our food chain has changed, starting with the seed. For fast food and packaged products, it has become even worse. Nowadays, Processed products are an amalgam of food concentrates, fats, sugar, and sodium, and toxins such as colorants, preservatives, and genetically engineered ingredients. Food manufacturers can get away with advertising pretty much anything they’d like to make their product look “healthy”. Many products that seem to be healthier alternatives are packed with unhealthy, toxic, and undesirable ingredients. learn to accurately read label. Having said that, keep in mind healthiest foods for humans the Earth, and they don’t come with any labels! A truly healthful diet should consist of mainly whole, plant-foods, therefore, any packaged food you purchase should be a minimally processed and be as close to the real food as possible.

#1 If

you can’t say it, avoid it

What exactly are BHA and BHT, propylene glycol, sodium benzoate, and polysorbate 60? Real food should contain words such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, or seeds. If you don’t see these, then you shouldn’t eat it.

#2 If an ingredient cannot be grown in a garden, avoid it

Many of the worst toxins found to affect us actually come from the food we eat. Did you know that aluminum is added as an emulsifying agent in many processed cheeses? Shockingly, it is also found in cake mixes, self-rising flour, prepared dough, waffles, nondairy creamers, pickles, baking powder, anti-acids and other medicines. The same applies to mercury, chemicals, colorants, and other toxins, that are added to food under the words “natural flavors” or “natural ingredients”. 14

LIVEDORALMAGAZINE.COM

MARCH 2016

Ingredients are listed in descending order of weight. That is, the first ingredient comprises the highest percentage of weight of the total product, and so on down the line. Therefore, if the first ingredients are cane sugar and safflower oil, you know that the product is pretty much sugar and fat. Are those whole foods? No. Skip it.

#5 The Whole Grain claim

Any product containing whole grain is not required to specify how much whole grain is actually in the product, and the FDA does not regulate it. That means that a product containing just one percent of whole grains can still be labeled as a whole grain food. Look for products that choose to disclose the amount of whole grain used, such as “100% whole grain”. #6 All Natural? Technically, “natural” means that the product has no added artificial colors or flavors and is minimally processed, according to the FDA. The “natural” claim isn’t strictly regulated and does not exclude pesticides and other chemicals, growth hormones, antibiotics, or GMOs.

#7 Gluten, ”yea” or “nay”?

Although this label claim is very important for those with any gluten sensitivities or Celiac disease, it is not an indication that the product is healthy. These products often contain food additives, refined oils, and tons of added sugars, just like their glutinous counterparts. Look at the ingredient list, and be sure that what you’re eating isn’t just gluten-free junk food.

#8 Organic

When it comes to packaged food, just because the label says “organic”, that does not mean its contents are healthy. Fried organic chips are still fried chips, and organic sugar cookies, are still sugar cookies. Strive to find organic products that contain real whole food ingredients such as beans, oats, bananas, dates, wheatgrass, etc.

#9 Avoid GMOs!

GMOs, or “genetically-modified organisms”, are foods that have been subjected to engineering in a laboratory. GMOs present a potential risk to consumers because of the lack of long-term research on their safety and health effects. Because the disclosure of GM foods is not required in the United States, we must choose products that disclose non-GMO ingredients and are marked with the Non-GMO Project verified labelorganic products as much as possible. For peace of mind, GMO-free products are verified with the NonGMO Project verified label.

#10 Avoid Animal-Derived Ingredients

It’s a fact. Plant-based diets are simply healthier and sustainable for us, and the planet. They reduce the incidence of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and cerebrovascular disease among many other diseases and conditions. Plant-based diets offer lower levels of saturated fat, cholesterol and higher levels of carbohydrates, fiber, magnesium, potassium, folate, and antioxidants. When reading a label, watch out for animal-derived ingredients such as whey, casein, caseinate, sodium caseinate, gelatin, lactose, lecithin, re rennet, monoglycerides, and glycerides.

To determine if you are overweight, estimate your body mass index (BMI), which is a calculation of your body weight relative to height. Multiply your weight in pounds by 703 and then divide the result by your height in inches two times. A BMI of 18.5 to 25 is considered healthy; 25 to 30 is overweight; 30 or higher is obese. To maintain your weight, you must burn enough energy to equal the calories you eat. To lose weight, you must use more calories than you eat. A weight-control strategy can begin with setting a realistic goal. Losing even a few pounds can improve your health, so start with a safe weight loss rate of one-half to two pounds per week. Losing weight isn’t easy. Twofor-one value meals tempt us on menus, biggie drinks look so refreshing and super-size portions seem really appetizing. And there is no shortage of books, magazines and websites touting the latest and greatest cure for being overweight. It can all seem overwhelming. But there is hope. You can take small, achievable steps to lose weight, and also reduce your risk of developing weight-related health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and some cancers. 16

lifestyle changes, not just going on a diet. Cut back on calories eaten and chose foods from a healthy assortment of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Limit alcohol consumption that can be high in calories, but low in nutrients. Read food labels and pay attention to serving size. Don’t be fooled by small packages that look like one serving size, but may actually be two or more. Incorporate exercise into your weight loss program. You don’t have to sweat to get a good workout. Short exercise sessions throughout the day can be just as effective at burning calories as an extended session. Thirty minutes of moderate to intensive physical activity is recommended daily to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight after weight loss. If you are at least 100 pounds overweight and experiencing difficulties or other medical problems due to your weight, you may be a candidate for gastric bypass surgery. This surgery reduces the amount of calories taken in by your body by either making your stomach smaller or bypassing part of the stomach and small intestines so that fewer calories are absorbed. Most patients lose about half of their excess weight within the first two years after surgery. Patients who undergo this surgery must make a strong, lifetime commitment to a healthy diet and exercise regime to ensure a successful weight loss and avoid complications. Fad diets may help you lose weight at first, but they rarely have a lasting effect. Keep in mind four common behaviors that can help ensure the success of your weight loss program: eat a lowcalorie, low-fat diet; weigh yourself frequently; be physically active; and don’t skip breakfast. Remember that losing weight, and keeping it off, requires major, long-lasting lifestyle changes. To learn more and attend a FREE Weight Loss Seminar presented by Dr. Jorge L. How Partnership Income Is Taxed

Generally, the IRS does not consider partnerships to be separate from their owners for tax purposes; instead, they are considered pass-through tax entities. This means that all of the profits and losses of the partnership pass through the business to the partners, who pay taxes on their share of the profits (or deduct their share of the losses) on their individual income tax returns. Each partner’s share of profits and losses is usually set out in a written partnership agreement.

Filing Tax Returns Single member LLC’s often create unforeseen tax consequences. Most people do not understand that an LLC is not a corporation, it’s a partnership. As such, the net profits of the partnership will be distributed to the members (owners) via form K-1. If you actively participate in the business, the net profits will flow through to your personal tax return as active income and you’ll have to pay income tax. That much I think everyone is aware of. Where people get sticker shock is they also have to pay self-employment tax which amounts to an additional 15.3% of the net profits.

Even though the partnership itself does not pay income taxes, it must file Form 1065 with the IRS. This form is an informational return the IRS reviews to determine whether the partners are reporting their income correctly. The partnership must also provide a Schedule K-1 to the IRS and to each partner, which breaks down each partner’s share of the business’s profits and losses. In turn, each partner reports this profit and loss information on his or her individual tax return (Form 1040), with Schedule E attached.

Estimating and Paying Taxes

Because there is no employer to compute and withhold income taxes, each partner must set aside enough money to pay taxes on his share of annual profits. Partners must estimate the amount of tax they will owe for the year and make payments to the IRS each quarter.

Profits Are Taxed Whether Partners Receive Them or Not

The IRS requires each partner to pay income taxes on his distributive share. This is the portion of profits to which the partner is entitled under a partnership agreement or under state law, if

the partners didn’t make an agreement. The IRS treats each partner as though he or she received his distributive share each year. This means that you must pay taxes on your share of the partnership’s profits total sales minus expenses regardless of how much money you actually withdraw from the business. The practical significance of the IRS rule about distributive shares is that even if partners need to leave profits in the partnership for instance, to cover future expenses or expand the business each partner will owe income tax on his or her rightful share of that money. (If your business will regularly need to retain profits, you should consider incorporating, corporations offer some relief from this particular tax bite.

Self-Employment Taxes

If you are actively involved in running a partnership, in addition to income taxes, the IRS requires you to pay self-employment taxes on all partnership profits allocated to you. Selfemployment taxes consist of contributions to the Social Security and Medicare programs, similar to the payroll taxes employees must pay. There are some differences between the contributions regular employees make and the contributions partners must make. First, because no employer withholds these taxes from partners’ paychecks, partners must pay them with their regular income taxes. Also, partners must pay twice as much as regular employees, because employees’ contributions are matched by their employers. However, partners can deduct half of their self-employment tax contribution from their taxable income, which lowers their tax bill a bit.

Incorporating Your Business May Cut Your Tax Bill

Unlike a partnership, a corporation pays its own taxes on all corporate profits left in the business. Owners of corporations pay income taxes only on money they receive as compensation for services (salaries and bonuses) or as dividends. While many small businesses would rather not file a corporate tax return, incorporating can offer business owners a tax advantage over a partnership’s pass through taxation. This is especially true for businesses that expect to retain profits in the business from year to year. aracterizada por ser una persona comprometida en generar experiencias de vida que transformen la manera en que las personas interpretan su mundo y a ellas mismas.

K

nown for her commitment to create life experiences that transform the way people interpret their world and themselves. Alejandra Llamas works to help others find the light, the strength and the magic emanating from the depths of our souls. Taking the person to a path of fulfillment and personal joy. Alejandra is also a disciple of Tias Little, one of the most renowned yoga teachers. She has a Master degree in Yoga and Meditation and an Ontological Coach certification, supported by the International Coach Federation. Her studies has led her to give seminars on “Technology of Thought” and to become the director and CEO of Ontologik Group, Yoga Center, Art and Coaching which is based here in Miami. Throughout her career as coach, Llamas has published several books such as “Una Vida sin Limites” (“A Life with no Limits”), “El Arte de la Pareja” (“The Art of the Couple”), among a few others that have become best-sellers.

My work invites me to write, to do constant research. Up to now, I have written five books and am now working on the sixth, which will be called “Anatomy of a Leader”. I am a teacher at the MMK Coaching Institute, recognized worldwide by the International Coach Federation. During the last eight years we have certified some 150 persons per year in the whole world. These are people that want to make coaching their profession. A great part of my work is teaching, I also give lectures all over the world. My life’s goal is to find balance with my work, which is my greatest passion, as well as with my two sons, my husband and my friends, all of whom are my anchor of deep love.

I become a coach due to an important twist in my life when I was 28. I moved to another country, my father passed away, I got a divorce and I changed jobs. All this within a very short period of time, and which generated in me anxiety, fears and instability. I decided that I would build a philosophy of life on which I could lean, and it would sustain me in peace throughout whichever changes life threw at me. Since then, I have dedicated myself to this. I got certified as an ontology coach and as a yoga instructor. I opened a yoga and coaching center in Miami. These two disciplines provide me with peacefulness and wellbeing. I teach with a great deal of passion and enthusiasm because of my great respect for this job and what it has brought to my personal life.

I believe all of us need coaching because we tend to be blind towards ourselves. It’s clear to us what we like in others, what we judge and what we fight for. We believe it is others that make us unhappy and we don’t recognize that everything has to do with ourselves. We don’t realize that the possibility of healing lives within us. A coach can help us know ourselves using different methodologies. It sheds light on what is inside us, which is creating the game of life. Something that is difficult to discover individually and therefore take responsibility for.

Most definitely not, you do not need a partner to be happy in life. Happiness can be conquered through emotional healing. By not healing the pain we carry inside from toxic emotional baggage, memories and negative recollections, etc., and which recur within us day by day. This keeps us from feeling whole. When we take responsibility for our inner state, we can share with others, finding happiness with or without a partner.

The elements are respect, love and searching through your couple for a teacher. Someone that can help you learn how to love, how to forgive and how to heal. This intimate connection with another human being will help you find deeper wells of love inside you. We must learn to yield in order to connect with another person through unconditional love. This is what truly leads to happiness.

We do not realize that all the hurt we have inside ends up projected onto our partner. This is something we do form a very young age. With all the pain from our childhood and adolescence, we are constantly searching for a salve to ease all those aches. We come to believe that our couple can become that medicine. Early on in the romance, we feel a certain calm because we are consumed with the idea that we feel fine at last. We are sure that our new partner is here

in order to heal what we carry inside of us. But this is a task that we can only accomplish ourselves. When the sparks of love fade away and the relationship is neutral, the pain comes right back. We then feel anger against our partner because we feel that, at the end, they were unable to eliminate our poor personal relationship. All those high expectations we had placed on our partner, now work against the couple. Frustration turns into anger because we are once again feeling hate and lack of love for ourselves. We now throw our garbage at our partner. This is a common occurrence which we do unknowingly. This way we go from love to hate in one short step.

The first part of the book invites you to recognize within us all the cultural, social, moral, religious and family beliefs that we may be carrying which may lead us to search for a partner from a distorted point of view. This takes us away from what is clear and from what having a partner really means. All this from a higher level of consciousness. The premise of the book explores what we would accomplish with a partner if we had none of these prejudices, these preconceived ideas, some likely from Soap Operas and stories from Disneyland. The second part of the book teaches us how to be in a relationship these days. From a starting point of consciousness, it prepares you to establish a relationship from a place filled with love and emotional health.

Most married couples have particular problems. But many times we join up with someone in order to please social or religious demands. In this case we lose the ability to form a deeper spiritual attachment with someone else. At the same time, the lack of communication tools brings about shortcomings in relationships. Many of us relate with our shortcomings, with our inner fears. I have also noticed that many exist only in a very superficial plane, in which my purpose is to focus only on what I need from the other person in order for me to be well. We start manipulating with lies and with fears, and this starts corroding the relationship, turning it into and encounter of unhappiness and not of fulfillment.

What are the factors involved in surviving an assault? There are various factors, these are just a few Situational Awareness (Awareness, Street Wisdom and Psychology):

Avoid dangerous situations, act confidently, and use common sense. You will be frighten and go through the fight or flight syndrome or what we call adrenaline response but you must learn to control your emotions and show no fear. If you are going to have to defend yourself physically, it is usually better to fight early using the element of surprise.

M

arch is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The statistics are alarming. More than seventy percent of women in America encounter a violent crime within her life time. Every nine seconds a woman is battered. One out of every eight women currently living in the US has been a rape victim. Each day approximately three thousand women report that they have been victims of some force aggression. Every day four women die in this country as a result of domestic violence. That’s approximately one thousand four hundred women each year. About 1/3 of high school students are or have been involved in an abusive dating relationship. The number of women who have been murdered by their intimate partners is greater than the number of soldiers killed in the Vietnam War. These statistics are just the reported cases, far more assaults go unreported. Have I gotten your attention yet? Yes, as a woman you could become an endangered species. The truth of the matter is that your safety is your responsibility, not your knight in shinning armor (husband, boy friend or brother), the government, the apartment manager police or security company. Remember you are not always in the presence of your knight and by the time the police arrive it might be too late. So what can a woman do not to be a statistic? The answer lies in this African proverb. Every morning a lion wakes up and chases a gazelle across the plain. The lion never goes after the swiftest, strongest gazelle. The lion doesn’t want the challenge, the lion wants a meal. So the lion picks the slowest and weakest. When the criminal goes out in search of a victim he doesn’t want a challenge he wants the easy prey. As a corrections officer (I worked in a maximum security state prison for over 10 years), as a martial arts instructor and through years of research, I’ve discovered 3 things that the bad guy wants and 3 things he does not want to happen.

If a criminal puts a gun or knife to your body, he does not want to kill you at that time. He either wants: 1. Your Body 2. Information 3. Your Possessions

1. He doesn’t want to be physically defeated by the victim. 2. He doesn’t want the victim to identify him. 3. He doesn’t want to be caught by the police. He picks on women that he perceives to be easy victims. It’s not how tough you really are but how tough he perceives you are. To accomplish this goal you must learn body language, verbal and physical self defense as a confidence builder. Yet your main weapon is the simple element of surprise.

Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. Practicing reality based self defense will enhance your reaction time and reflexes. Through continual practice your body will acquire the muscle memory that you will need and the knowledge of the body’s vital points and how and when to attack them. Planning and practice are the keys to not freezing when you are attacked.

Fitness

Being in good shape could augment your odds of survival. It is not necessary to be an Olympic athlete, UFC or kickboxing champion to defend yourself. Yet, a fit person has a better chance to escape and to inflict damage with strikes.

Reading this article or books on self defense will not teach you to defend yourself. It can however point you in the right direction. Self defense training must be conducted in a reality based setting, with verbal and physical scenario encounters. This will make you the fastest gazelle not a victim of crime! By the way I forgot to mention that the predator in that African proverb is a female lion.

La Psicología del Amor: LA TEORÍA TRIANGULAR PASIÓN, INTIMIDAD <<< Y COMPROMISO >>>

E

For Saccaro USA, the home is our true habitat. It is where we reveal our character, influences, dreams and goals. With this in mind, each of the fine furniture purveyor’s pieces are as unique as a signature and steeped in history, tradition and innovation

F

or 70 years, Saccaro has been designing and manufacturing high quality, sustainable and innovative furnishings. From the humble beginnings of its founder Albino Saccaro in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, Saccaro’s exquisite pieces became recognized and sought-after the world over. Today, Saccaro USA counts celebrities, world-class resorts and hotels, leading local and international interior designers, and preeminent real estate developers among its roster of clients. “Each of Saccaro’s pieces tell a story that is inspired by the life and landscapes of Brazil and some of the most beautiful destinations around the globe,” said Luiz Silva, CEO of Saccaro USA. “An individual’s uniqueness is evident by the items they choose to surround themselves in their habitat. The selection of certain pieces in a home paints the overall narrative of a person’s life.” Stepping into the new Doral showroom, it is apparent that Saccaro USA is the pinnacle of design. Upon arrival, guests experience elegant craftsmanship and fine history paired with innovation and tradition as they explore artisanal indoor and outdoor collections. Saccaro USA first welcomed guests to the expansive Doral showroom with an evening soirée attended by real estate, design and business leaders just prior to the start of the New Year. Shoppers continue

to relish with delight as they enjoy unique pieces crafted by skillful hands contributing to Brazil’s rich design history. Since its founding in 1946, Saccaro’s technology has evolved, but the talent remains in those who create, produce and enhance the furniture. Featured in the Doral showroom is a vast selection of Saccaro USA’s collections including the new Capadócia Collection. The line features pieces made from sustainable materials that are suited for both indoor and outdoor use including accent chairs, ottomans, sofas and the swinging nest - the centerpiece of the collection, which is reminiscent of a hot air balloon basket. As with all of Saccaro USA’s pieces, the Capadócia Collection tells a unique story, with award-winning Brazilian designer Roque Frizzo inspired by the hot air balloons that fly high above the Cappadocia region in Turkey. Cappadocia, Turkey, is marveled for its unique hilly topography. The erosion of several layers of volcanic sediment gave shape to the most interesting landscape in the world, which was then shaped again by locals who mined the soft stone for their homes and to cultivate the fertile land. Those who fly over Cappadocia witness a landscape transformed by men, but sculpted by nature over millions of years. S acc aro Do r al

“Roque Frizzo’s Capadócia Collection is timeless and comprises exciting pieces that will change your point of view when it comes to indoor and outdoor home furniture,” said Silva. “The suspended swinging nest is the ultimate way to sit back, relax and enjoy balmy summer nights outdoors.” Saccaro USA has extensive experience in delivering acclaimed turnkey residences, having recently completed an exquisite penthouse for 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach and previously completing model residences in Canyon Ranch and Vizcayne. In fact, Saccaro USA was the recipient of the 2012 Grand Aurora Award for best model condo for a three bedroom, 4,000 square foot residence at Canyon Ranch. Additionally, Saccaro USA has a full service hospitality division and team of in-store home design consultants who make creating the most luxurious and comfortable home habitats a breeze. The new showroom is part of a larger facility in Doral, which also includes a vast distribution center housing an immense inventory which allows for immediate delivery. They contacted U.S Army Sergeant Howell from the ALPHA Company 124th Infantry Battalion who recommended the families of Private First Class Leonardo Calderin, Private Robert Vein and Specialist Vincent Fraser for this special celebration. In addition to toys and other holiday gifts, one of the families received a special needs stroller donated by Humana partner One Homecare Solutions. “We wanted to let our soldiers know how much we appreciate and admire them. “ says Franquez. “We’re happy to give back to their families, who are often separated from them for the sake of our own protection and freedom.” Humana provides health benefits to 3 million U.S. service men and women along with their dependents in TRICARE’S South Region.

The results from the World Golf Championships – Cadillac Championship are in, and first place goes to Adam Scott. This is Scott’s second straight win as he also won The Honda Classic a few weeks back. Scott started the day three shots behind McIlroy, and he appeared out of the running after a pair of double bogeys over his first five holes. But the Aussie steeled his nerve and rattled off a string of accurate approach shots, including a run of four birdies on Nos. 10-14 to take the lead. Scott nearly put his approach on No. 18 into the water but managed to save par for the win. In total he finished -12 with 276 strokes. Bubba Watson finished 2nd at -11, while Rory Mcllroy and Danny Willett tied for 3rd at -10. It is the 17th WGC-Cadillac Championship tournament, and the first of the World Golf Championships events to be staged in 2016. Since 2007 the event has taken place at The Blue Monster course at Trump National Doral.

February 11, US Attorney General Loretta Lynch met with the officers and staff of the Doral Police Department regarding their accomplishments in building trust and legitimacy with the community they serve through the Blue Courage initiative. Doral is the first city of six, being visited on the Community Policing Tour, for exemplifying model behavior and achievements for police departments nationwide to follow. Attorney General Lynch met with the Doral police officers where she received a frank assessment of their best practices in community policing. “One of my top priorities as Attorney General is strengthening relationships between law enforcement officers and the communities we serve and protect,” said Attorney General Lynch. Doral’s community oriented policing has yielded great bonds with the community through The Blue Courage program. “We engaged a department of really talented officers to embrace having the right mindset and heart set,” said Chief De Lucca. “In 21st century policing it is not enough to have just operational skills, we need the mental skills and that’s where Blue Courage education comes in.

Recently, Doral IT Director Gladys Gonzalez announced, “You don’t need an app for that anymore.” She was referring to the launch of the new Doral smart city platform. The Doral app has been replaced, not by just a pretty website, but by an end to end citizen e-service environment that is accessible by smartphones, tablets and laptops. The 311 reporting system has been replaced by the new web based platform. Residents will see 311 in the center of their screen when they go to www.cityofdoral.com. “This will be a big improvement in requesting city services,” said Public Works Director Joan Shen. By replacing the old application with a new platform the City will not only receive notifications, but under the Smart City Initiative Public Works will be able to see trends in city service requests, and will be able to better dedicate resources for faster response times. Through this page Doral residents can report noise complaints, flooding issues, suggest policing tips, request trolley service, create building department meetings and much more. The net effect of this page will be a wellconnected and informed community.
