STROKE CAN OCCUR AT ANY AGE

When the topic of stroke comes up, people are likely to picture an adult victim. Sadly, this is not always the case. Teenagers, children, newborns – even unborn babies can also suffer a stroke. It remains one of the top 10 causes of death in children. A child’s risk of stroke is greatest in the first year of life, and during the period right before birth to right after birth. According to the National Stroke Association, stroke occurs in one in 4,000 live births. The risk of stroke from birth to age 18 is almost 11 in 100,000; though they are slightly more common in children under age 2.

RISK FACTORS Adults tend to be at higher risk for stroke because they have high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat and/or a hardening of the arteries. Pediatric stroke risks are much different, and include: • Congenital heart defects • Sickle-cell disease • Abnormal blood clotting • Head or neck trauma • Maternal history of infertility • Maternal infection in the fluid surrounding an unborn baby • Pregnancy-related high blood pressure in the mother SIGNS & SYMPTOMS Many times, recognition of stroke is delayed or missed in children. The most common signs and symptoms of stroke in newborns and infants are: • Seizures, including repetitive twitching of the face, arm or leg • Apnea (pauses in breathing) associated with staring • Extreme sleepiness • A tendency to use only one side of their body

With children and teens, look for • Weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, usually on one side of the body • Severe dizziness or loss of coordination • Severe sudden headache, especially with vomiting and sleepiness • Difficulty speaking or understanding others • Vision loss or double vision • New onset of seizures, usually on one side of the body.

Although stroke symptoms for children and teens are similar to those of adult stroke, the signs are often missed because of lack of awareness that stroke can occur at such a young age. For more information about pediatric stroke, talk with your pediatrician.

H ISTORYM I A M I M U S E U M’ S NE W E X H I B IT I O N FEATURING ‘STREET TRADITIONS’ THAT MAKE MIAMI UNIQUE OPENS TO A CROWD OF OVER 500

H

istoryMiami Museum launched its exhibition, Avenues of Expression: Street Traditions in Miami, with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts. This one-of-a-kind exhibition opened to a crowd of 500 guests at an opening reception on Friday, March 16, 2018 from 6-9 p.m. Through artifacts, video interviews, interactive displays and recreated environments, the exhibition inspires visitors to get street smart and discover the world around them. The ten-month exhibition is open to the public now through Sunday, January 13, 2019. The launch party kicked off with cocktails by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, “Miami Style” bites and entertainment from DJ Le Spam as 25 tall bikes circled the event. The tall bikes are one of the many features of the actual exhibit showcasing slices of character seen on the streets of Miami. A 20 person Junkanoo band flooded the plaza, energizing the crowd and playing their instruments as hundreds of onlookers snapped photos, streamed live on Facebook and Instagram and danced to the Bahamian beats. The Bahamas Junkanoo Revue of Miami’s colorful costumes are on proud display at the entry way of the exhibition which highlights other Miami art and traditions, including a cafecito machine, murals by some of the city’s most well-known street artists, muffler art and clothing worn by well-known drag queen Tiffany Fantasia, as well as visuals of vehicle customization, parades, religious practices and items focusing on political and social issues affecting South Florida and more.

Throughout the exhibition, visitors are invited to pick up a phone and listen to stories told from the people highlighted in the exhibition. For example, Fantasia speaks of a confrontation with a preacher on the streets of Miami during a Gay Pride Parade while street muralist Serge Toussaint explains how his family finally supported his craft as an artist only after he appeared on CNN painting a mural. “Miami is the ultimate melting pot and the street traditions seen throughout the exhibition show we are unique and have flavor like no other city. From items that surround a home showcasing religious beliefs to 30 foot high murals on the side of a building to focusing on a legendary Coconut Grove ‘”Icees” vendor in one of the original food trucks in the nation, we have a collection that can only be seen across the streets of South Florida,” said Jorge Zamanillo, Executive Director of HistoryMiami Museum. “It’s all the slices of Miami in one location like never seen before.” This exciting new exhibition allows visitors to discover the street traditions hiding in plain sight on Miami’s avenues, where the vibrant, raw pulse that fuels this city is felt the most and where Miami’s diverse communities converge and interact. It also highlights the people who bring creativity and meaning to these practices, all of which help to give Miami its unique mix of characteristics and identities. “Avenues of Expression” is open through January 13, 2019, at HistoryMiami, 101 W. Flagler St., Miami; 305-375-1942; historymiami. org. Admission costs $10, or $8 for students and seniors, $5 for children ages 6 to 12, and free to museum members and kids under 6.

Valentina Munevar

PIONERA DE LA TÉCNICA DEL CAMUFLAJE DE ESTRÍAS

T

hours, but days and weeks of work. I had to start out by researching how to record, and how to edit. It was very funny to realize that the only editing program I knew how to use was the "Windows Movie Maker" (she laughs), and I learned everything by watching YouTube tutorials. So, as I always say: "Whoever wants to achieve something ... Can definitely do it!"

WHERE DID YOUR INTEREST IN CREATING A COMMUNITY ON YOUTUBE COME FROM? Honestly, I never imagined making YouTube videos. I have always been a great YouTube fan, but, oddly enough, it was not until after I finished my medical career, that I was motivated by "the Bear" to do so. He was the one who told me that I should share my talents and experiences with the world, and it was then that I began to realize how nice it could be to share my experiences with so many people through the screen. I realized that YouTube would be a wonderful window to share my experiences and knowledge with others.

satisfaction is to be able to inspire them and teach them through my experiences that every single one of their dreams, with effort and sacrifice, may come true.

DID YOU EVER IMAGINE THE IMPACT YOU WOULD HAVE IN THE LIVES OF YOUR FOLLOWERS? Never. Sometimes it feels as if I am in a dream from which I don’t want to wake up. The power that social networks have is astounding and it is empowering to realize how through a screen you can create such beautiful and genuine relationships with so many people around the world. For me, YouTube has been a wonderful window to share my experiences and knowledge with others. My greatest

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A WOMAN ENTREPRENEUR OR A WOMAN IN TECHNOLOGY? When I decided to start making videos on YouTube, my life took a 360-degree turn. Leaving my career as a doctor, and dedicating myself to social networks, recording and editing my videos myself, was something I never imagined ... as an Influencer not only are you the creative one, but you are also your own director, producer, editor, and it is not

WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS? Everything is born out of an idea. Once I decide to record the video, the preparations start immediately. Each video is a different adventure. If it is a video about back-to-school I go out to buy supplies, if it is a video about tips, I start thinking about practical ideas and I write them down; if it is a cover I have to practice the song. What I enjoy the most is being able to share a very diverse content, which not only makes me have a lot of fun, but also allows me to develop different skills, and reach all kinds of audiences. Then it's time to record, which depending on the video can take me from a couple of hours to a full day. But honestly editing is the process that takes the most time. I have always been very detail-oriented and consider myself to be a perfectionist, and regardless of the subject of the video I always give the best of myself. I put in a lot of effort to ensure that my content is entertaining and high-quality

IN A TYPICAL DAY, WHAT DO YOU DO? I like to start out with a good cup of coffee. Then, I open all the windows because I love light, and this automatically puts me in a good mood. Later, I sit down at the computer and start checking e-mails. Then I go take a shower and get ready to record, edit, attend an event, or do whatever I have to do. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED IN YOUR LIFE? I’ve learned that just as one day you are up, the next one you can be down. Also, I never underestimate the talent of others, and finally, I believe that work dignifies. HOW HAS FAILURE MOLDED YOUR LIFE? Failure has allowed me to value success even more, as well as the moments of full happiness. But I thank God very much for the bad moments because they also make me feel alive. Adhere to your child’s school’s rules and 5 policies. Be an example for your child to follow. Comply with all school rules and policies. This way your child feels that rules are meant to be followed. Rules and policies make everyone safe. This gives children a sense of safety. Just imagine what our society would be like if laws were not enforced. Motivate your child to express their 6 feelings and concerns. Dialogue with your child is extremely important. Have relaxed, open ended conversations with your child. The lines of communication must be open at all times. If your child feels comfortable talking to you about a variety of topics, research shows that sensitive topics will be addressed, which will help them avoid conflicts and uncomfortable situations.

How to Talk to Your CHILDREN about

SCHOOL SAFETY

K

nowing how to talk to your child about school safety issues is critical and plays an important role in easing their fears and anxiety about their own safety. The recent intense media coverage on school violence brings school safety to the forefront. Here are a few tips to guide you through your discussions about school safety with your child: Help your child understand that they are 1 not alone. It is important for children to recognize that you have feelings just like they do. They are not alone in trying to deal with their fears. Make them feel that you value their feelings. Help them to understand that serious school violence is not common, which is why when incidents occur they attract so much media attention. Keep your explanations developmentally 2 appropriate. For example, if your child is an elementary school student, provide them with brief and simple information.

24 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M

Remind

them that the adults in their lives (parents and teachers) are there to protect them. Remind them of the emergency drills that take place at school, which are exercises in order to keep them safe in case of a real emergency. Reassure your child that schools are 3 safe places. Recent studies have shown that schools are more secure now than ever before. It is important that you explain to your child all of the safety measures that schools have in order to keep students and staff safe. For example, at Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, the facility is completely enclosed with one single point of entry. This contributes to an extremely safe learning environment and minimizes the possibility of a dangerous incident occurring.

Encourage your child to be a leader 7 regarding school safety. Encourage your child to report specific incidents such as bullying and to develop problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Find out what programs your school offers and how students can take on leadership roles. For example, at Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, students can participate in programs such as the Ambassador Program or the News Team. These programs allow students to spearhead different schoolwide efforts, which can revolve around the topic of school safety. It is also important to remind children to be observant and let an adult know if they hear or see something that makes them feel uncomfortable. Keeping those lines of communication open and maintaining a constant dialogue is imperative. Continue to remind your child that violence is never a solution to any problem. It is always important to emphasize that children should seek assistance from a responsible adult when it comes to solving problems peacefully. Be safe!

Describe the safety plan at your child’s 4 school. Children need to know the plan. Explain to your child how the plan works. Most schools post their safety plan on the school’s website. For example, at Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, the safety plan is readily available for parents

SALUD

¿POR QUE LA EPIDEMIA DE

S A L U D M E N TA L

EN NUESTROS JOVENES?

E

NUTRICIÓN

5 MITOS DE LA ALIMENTACIÓN QUE TE SORPRENDERÁN 1

DIETA SIN LACTOSA... ¿PERO POR QUÉ?

2

3

4

¿INCOMPATIBLES?

30 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M

MOVERS & SHAKERS

MOVERS AND Shakers Resaltando a los que han impactado nuestra comunidad, les presentamos a la pareja Movers and Shakers detrás de @thetasty.healthy.box.

A

1 Remove steaks from the refrigerator and let them sit for about 30 minutes to take the chill out of the meat. 2 Now, coat both sides generously with coarse black pepper and granulated garlic powder. 3 Heat an iron skillet or a heavy bottomed frying pan until very hot on high heat. 4 For each steak, sprinkle onto the skillet, 3/4 teaspoon of coarse salt and allow salt to heat up for at least 1 minute. 5 Place the steaks on the coarse salt and cook for 3 minutes; DO NOT DISTURB at all, DO NOT LOOK or even move the steaks. 6 Turn the steaks over and cook for an additional 3 minutes; again DO NOT DISTURB at all. 7 The cooking time of 6 minutes gives you a medium-rare steak; DO NOT OVERCOOK. 8 If you desire to cook it to medium, then cook for an additional 30 seconds to 1 minute per side. 9 Remove steaks to a plate, cover with foil and let rest for 5 minutes, so that all juices are absorbed by the meat. 10 Scrape off any excess coarse pepper and salt if desired and discard. 11 I prefer to slice the steaks on an angle about 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch thickness. 12 Serve with freshly processed horseradish. 13 NOTE Make sure that the heat is on as HIGH as possible without burning at all times during cooking the steaks. This will vary depending on your cooktop. 14 Do not use ordinary table salt. 15 Beef Tenderloin steaks are also real great cooked in this manner. If using a steak thicker than 1 inch, add 1 extra minute per side for medium-rare.

CORAL SPRINGS, FL, March 12, 2018 South Florida residents are banding together to support the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre. In response to the shooting, the foundation MSD Save Our Schools, Inc., has been formed to help make funding projects easier for those affected, raising more than $26,000 in pledges in its first week. “We’re proud to honor and memorialize those students and teachers, as well as the families that were affected, by the tragic school shooting,” said co-founder Jay A. Shorr, who founded the foundation with his daughter, Mara Shorr. “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is located right in my South Florida backyard, and we knew that we wanted to do something. Dozens of South Florida business owners, as well as those from around the country, have banded together to make this happen in a matter of weeks. This includes Gordon & Rees Scully Mansukhani with legal assistance, Bhupen Vakharia, CPA with accounting services, and Durrick Designs with website development.”
