EDITOR’S NOTE

Dear Readers,

Queridos lectores,

The holiday is again upon us. To me, this is always my favorite time of the year. It feels as if everyone is in a festive mood, is a bit more collective and in general there is a feeling of joy in the air. As we drive around Doral we can already notice that many families are arriving to our city to spend time with their loved ones. I want to let everyone know that this is the time of year for us to GIVE. Not only to give each of our friends and family a heartfelt gift to show our appreciation but to also donate our time and money to those who need it. Below I am including a link for some of the best rated charities in the US. These are charities that give the highest percentage of their donations to those in need, as opposed to paying high salaries to internal staff. Among those included are Cancer Research Institute, Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance, Prevent Child Abuse, American Lung Association and Alzheimer’s Association. In addition to giving money it is also easy to gather a couple of friends or family members and donate your time at a local hospital to visit sick children. A few hours of your time is all it takes to make someone smile for weeks and create memories that last a lifetime.

www.consumerreports.org/charities/ best-charities-for-your-donations/ In this December/January issue we invite you to check out Mariano’s - this is a new Italian restaurant concept located on the Northeast corner of 97th Avenue and 41st Street. In this issue we also discuss the various holiday traditions throughout the world and in history and give you some good ideas for holiday recipes.

awrence A. Schiffman, DO., FAOCD is a Board Certified - General, Surgical & Cosmetic Dermatologist specializing in all disorders of the skin, hair and nails. regeneration and repair mechanisms within the skin that improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well and textural and pigment abnormalities. Newer technologies include micro-needling and RadioFrequency tightening. These treatments are slightly more aggressive than skin rejuvenation procedures which typically employ Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or glycolic/salicylic acid peels. IPL targets chromophores in the skin to remove dark sun spots on the face, neck and hands, minimize telangiectasias (small blood vessels) and improve the appearance of conditions such as acne, rosacea, melasma and sun damage. A combination approach using both skin rejuvenation and skin resurfacing techniques will provide the best results in combination with topical anti-aging/anti-oxidant products and SUNBLOCK! What procedure would you recommend to even out skin discoloration on the face? Skin discolorations are called Dyschromias. They can be caused by sun exposure, genetics, hormonal issues and other disorders. It is a very common concern here in South Florida. Solar lentigines and melasma are the two most common presentations. The best way to improve those involves a combination of Fractionated non-ablative lasers and Intense Pulsed Light treatments.

Why did you choose Doral to open your practice? I chose Doral because there were not any dermatologists practicing there and I knew it was one of the fastest growing cities in Florida, let alone the country. How quickly can patients see results for Botox, Restylane, Belotoro and Juvederm? The results following filler treatment are immediate. The product does settle in the first few weeks but the results can be seen walking out of the office. Neurotoxins (Botulinum) on the other hand, typically take one week or more to begin to see the results. With serial treatments, those effects seem to occur sooner. Temporary paralysis of the muscles of facial expression, when administered correctly, can literally erase deep wrinkles and lines that have been deepening for decades. It is also very safe and effective, though the results typically last 3-6 months at most so follow up treatments are necessary to maintain the look. Fillers will also need follow up treatments over time, but not nearly as often as neurotoxins. Is Miami Skin Dr. able to recommend Medical Marijuana? I am certified by the State of Florida to RECOMMEND medical marijuana for patients with eligible debilitating conditions. These include Parkinsons, ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, HIV/AIDS,Glaucoma, PTSD, Crohns, Cancer, Seizures, epilepsy, severe and persistent muscle spasms, a terminal illness, or chronic non malignant pain that stems from a debilitating condition listed. Tell us about Tele-Dermatology… My practice is fully electronic and paperless. We employ electronic health records and utilize a patient portal for communication with patients. In addition, I offer an app to my patients with a teledermatology portal that allows the patient to send images of any skin condition, from anywhere in the world 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I can diagnose the condition and send prescriptions electronically to the patients pharmacy and communicate in real time via the app.

COMMUNITY

LOVE, COMMUNITY AND JOY A lmost five years ago, when Gary and Belinda married, both of their families waited patiently to find out what religion they would decide to adopt. We all knew they belonged to two different faiths, but were secretly hoping that they would select our faith over the in-laws’. Not knowing which way they were going to lean, we held our collective breaths as the first Christmas rolled around. Were they going to opt for a tree or were they going to light up a menorah with all its candles? As the days passed and nothing happened, both sides of the family started to feel a little disappointed. But a few days before Christmas they finally went out and purchased a tree, standing it proudly by the fireplace in their living room. Well! We were feeling mighty proud that our side of the family seemed to be winning this silent battle! But when we were invited to see the decorated tree, we understood something important: there are many different ways to celebrate the holidays! This is what the family saw: the tree was lit from top to bottom with tiny white lights. However, the decorations covering it were all characters and spaceships from the Star Wars film series! Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, Yoda, R2-D2, Chewbacca, Jabba the Hutt, C-3PO and others, hung next to AAT battle tanks, A-wing fighters, ARC-170 Starfighters, cloud cars and combat assault tanks, and other figures or vehicles we could not name. To top it off, a blue and white Star of David sparkled proudly.

S O , W H AT H A D G A RY A N D BELINDA DECIDED? They had decided not to take sides and honor both their faiths. It was an important lesson for all of us. We learned that there are many different ways to celebrate the holidays and they are all valid and can bring everyone around them a great feeling of community and lots of joy. 14 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M

If you and yours are already committed to a specific way to celebrate the holidays and usher in the New Year, good for you! If you are willing to try other ideas or incorporate them with your own, here are some interesting perspectives:

ETHIOPIAN NEW YEAR If you are not too much into the holidays, you may want to consider the Ethiopian New Year. Ethiopia is the only country in the world that has not adopted the 12-month Gregorian calendar. Instead, they use a 13-month calendar that contains 12 months with 30 days each and a 13th month with only 5 days (except in a leap year when it has six). If we were to translate the date of their New Year into our own, we would find out that theirs falls on September 11 (so long as it is not one of their leap years!). B O X I N G D AY If you are more inclined towards charity, you may wish to look into this day celebrated throughout the United Kingdom. Charity, you mean? Isn’t this a day for getting together with friends and practicing some punches and knocks? Not at all! This celebration refers to the act of opening up the alms box at church and contributing towards needy causes. This holiday definitely matches the selfless spirit of more traditional holidays. YA L D A With its origins in Persia, the festival of Yalda is a celebration of the winter solstice that has been observed since ancient times. It is held on the last day of the Persian month of Azar and reflects the victory of light over dark. The birthday of the sun god Mithra is also

YOUR GUIDE TO ENJOYING THE HOLIDAYS celebrated during Yalda. To commemorate this important date, families get together and share special local foods such as nuts and pomegranates. Many people stay awake all night in order to welcome the morning sun. But it is not only in Iran that this special day is celebrated. The Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, falls on December 21. For many centuries, people all over the world have paid special attention to this significant cosmological event, celebrating the return of the sun in many different ways. S T. L U C I A’ S D AY St. Lucia’s Day is a festival of lights celebrated in Scandinavia around the time of the winter solstice. Although these days it is meant to honor St. Lucia, a Christian martyr, it has been incorporated with earlier Norse solstice traditions, such as lighting fires to ward off spirits during the longest night. Girls dress up in white gowns with red sashes and wear wreaths of candles on their heads in honor of St. Lucia.

COMMUNITY

CHINESE LUNAR NEW YEAR This time the Chinese Lunar New Year will start on February 16. The core of this festivity is bringing together family members who return to their home towns to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Starting 15 days before the celebration and lasting for 40 days, this holiday represents one of the largest yearly migrations in the world. This year almost 3 billion people traveled home in order to carry out these festivities. This festival is centuries old and surrounds several myths and customs. Traditionally, this celebration was a time to honor deities as well as ancestors. It is celebrated in locales with significant Chinese populations such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and, of course, Mainland China. KWANZAA Gaining in popularity since it was created by Maulana Karenga in 1966 to empower the black community after the Watts riots in Los Angeles, Kwanzaa is observed from December 26 to January 1. Based on traditional African harvest festivals, Kwanzaa means “First Fruit in Swahili and it honors African heritage in African American culture. Its seven core principles include the idea of maintaining unity, family, community, nation and race. They also speak of selfdetermination, nation building, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

HANUKKAH There is no right way to spell this holiday celebrated by Jewish people all over the world. Also known as the Festival of Lights, this celebration includes traditions such as lighting the menorah, playing the dreidel game, cooking and baking food fried in oil and getting lots of gifts! The celebration of Hanukkah has both religious and secular roots and has several different legacies and meanings which can be accentuated or played down, depending on how religious one wants to be. It commemorates the successful rebellion, in the second century B.C.E., of a clan of Jewish freedom fighters called the Maccabees. These warriors rose up against Antiochus, a Greco-Syrian monarch who ruled Israel with a hard hand, banning Jews from practicing their faith and pressuring them to convert to a Hellenic way of life. Despite being greatly outnumbered, the Maccabees managed to recapture the Holy Temple from their oppressors. There is also a religious aspect to this celebration. Hanukkah rejoices in the miracle that occurred when the Maccabees reclaimed the Temple. The sanctuary was a shambles, torn apart by the Hellenic forces. The fighters found only enough oil to light a lantern for one day. But the lantern blazed for eight full days.

CHRISTMAS Christmas is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, believed by Christians to be the Son of God. Through a Mass service or Eucharist, Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life. Christmas traditions vary from country to country and include installing and lighting a Christmas tree, hanging Advent wreath, placing Christmas stockings and candy canes, setting up Nativity scenes that depict the birth of Jesus, singing Christmas carols and stories about such figures as Baby Jesus, Santa Claus, Father Christmas and Saint Nicholas. People also send and exchange Christmas card greetings, fast and follow special religious observances such as a midnight Mass or Vespers on Christmas Eve, the burning of a Yule log, and the giving and receiving of presents. Christmas is celebrated on December 25 and is recognized as a Federal Holiday in the United States. Undoubtedly, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of holiday traditions around the world, many of which we have never heard of. These include a giant goat made of hay in Sweden, a witch that brings candy to kids in Italy, a display of carved vegetables in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico, and hiding all brooms in Norway (to prevent witches from riding away in them!). For my part, I think I am going to go for the tried-and-true and rush out to buy a Christmas tree! By Hellen Soriano

NEGOCIOS

18 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M

The minimum time required is 21 days, although the ideal is to let it age between 30 and 40 days. “ This is a dish for those with discerning palates. As a longtime chef of Olivos and then at Marfil in Doral, the opening of Chef Mariano’s represents a dream come true. “I’ve always wanted to have an open kitchen and nowadays I can do it with this small, cozy restaurant. LIFE COACHING

Three steps to reach success in Use this guide to create a n d i m p l e m e n t y o u r N e w Ye a r Resolutions for 2018 Step 1 - Find your true potential and let your imagination dream big. “In 2018 I will reach all my goals” – with this intention imbedded in your mind you are ready to begin creating your immediate future. You don’t have to wait a single minute or 10 ten years. Your future can start today, this can be the day you start to build a wonderful life for yourself. You are the architect and designer for each day of your life from this point on. You will need tools in order to stay determined. Being successful is a privilege for those who decide to take the first step. This could be the first step for the journey that is the rest of your life. The holiday season allows us to reflect, as we prepare our minds for the coming year it is a good opportunity to meditate over what we want to achieve in the coming year. Step 2 - Create a detailed plan that reflects the goals you have been dreaming about. Everyone dreams about the things that they would like to achieve. One of the most difficult things is finding where to start. Well, don’t worry because here you will find the perfect formula. There are 8 clusters in everyone’s life to focus on. 1 Personal Development -What do I want to learn in 2018? – Meditation, Yoga, learn to play a musical instrument. 2 Health and Aging – How can I achieve a balanced nutrition and an exercise plan? 3 Relationships – How can I improve all my relationships? 4 Career/Profession – Do I need a new career or profession or how can I improve my existing one?

Life

5 Family/Parenting – How can I demonstrate the love I have for each family member? 6 Personal Finances – What financial goals should I reach for next year? 7 Fun & Enjoyment – What should be my dream vacation. I should plan for them now. Also I should find how to enjoy and have fun every day of my life 8 Spiritual Awareness – How can I support spiritual believes through my actions? These are good examples of how to create your list of goals for each cluster of your wheel of life. Your list can be as simple or as complex as you wish. The important thing is that you have the power to decide what is best for you. Meditating over each area listed above you can easily find a list of goals you want to achieve. I have been guiding my client on how to use this formula for years. I coach them using this exact process and adding the accountability factor. Everyone that have followed the process have achieved success.

How to create a plan The best way is to use project management as you would for any project. Project Management is just a simple list of goals and objectives with detailed tasks and dates. If you know when each task needs to be accomplished then it becomes easy to follow the plan. Let’s say I want to find and start a new job early in January 2018. Here is a starting list A. Update my resume and have it ready by Dec 15 B. Choose the organizations I want to work for by Dec 17 C. Send all applications for by Dec 23 D. Prepare myself for interviews by Dec 23 E. Start a new job by Jan 3, 2018 I can add a lot more detail to each task. However, this list will get me going because I know when I have to start working and when I wish to start the new job. Everything else can fall in between.

Step 3 - Follow the plan as rigorously as possible. This means to follow all the steps and complete all the tasks in your plan as you promised yourself. If you are or become organized, efficient, and careful each project can be a lot of fun. Now let me clarify that you don’t need to be a certain age or have a college degree. Your social status or economic situation does not matter. You are a wonderful human being, capable of achieving the success you have dream about all your life.

I WISH YOU THE BEST IN THE COMING YEAR. M AY 2 0 1 8 B E F U L L O F ABUNDANCE AND HAPPINESS TO YOU AND YOURS.

NEW YEAR’S

New Year’s is a great time to celebrate new beginnings. Making resolutions with your children can be fun and exciting. It is a great opportunity for family bonding, and for families to discuss what the future holds and how they can plan for positive growth and change, together.

1

.Be a role model. It is important to practice what you preach. Stick to your goals and encourage them to do the same. Encouraging your family to adopt a team mentality to reach each individual’s goals is a great way to nurture familial unity while keeping everyone accountable. Set the example by following through on your commitments and they will too.

2

. Keep a positive approach to resolutions. Present goal setting in an optimistic way. Start by going over the positive things your children accomplished last year. Have them think of things they can do now that they could not do last year. Remind them that effort helps you reach your goal.

3

. Teach the importance of setting goals. Children need to know the “why”. Setting a goal will improve their confidence, help them make better decisions and give them motivation in life. Give your child an example of a goal that you set and the sacrifices that you had to make in order to achieve the goal. You can sacrifice something you like for a positive outcome.

4

. Take baby steps. Help your child to set small, achievable goals that can be accomplished quickly. This will help them understand the process. Then, once they

28 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M

grasp this concept, you can have them set more long range goals. Have your child point out which goals are most important. Goals should be measurable, achievable and specific. Some children may dream big, but maybe too big. If you know the goal is unachievable, instead of telling them they cannot do it, help them refine their goal into something you know they will be able to achieve. Become their biggest fan and motivator.

5

. Follow up with your child on their goals periodically. Check in on your children. How is their progress? Try not to be a nag about it. You do not want them to be negative. If the plan is not working, remind them that it can be adjusted. Involve them in adjusting the plan. If they are part of this process, they will take ownership and you will have a better chance of them following through with it.

. Involve your child’s teacher/school. Children love to share their goals and successes with their teacher and school family. Find out if your child’s school has a system where they recognize children for achieving their goals on a personal level. For example, at Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, the Morning News Team often highlights student’s personal successes. Students love to see themselves featured on the morning news for the entire student body to view.

8

. Celebrate as a family once a goal is achieved. Hooray! Your child has achieved his/ her goal! Now it’s time to celebrate. Nothing is more affirming to children than succeeding at goals they have worked hard to achieve. Plan a family celebration with your child’s favorite meal or dessert. It is the perfect way to spark intentional conversation and foster quality time with your children. Then, set some new goals and look forward to celebrating once again. Congratulations! Felicitaciones! Parabéns!

6

. Make family resolutions together. Work together as a family to create goals. Talk about steps that can be taken in order to achieve goals together. Developing family goals brings many families closer. Brainstorm ideas. Plan charitable activities. Becoming involved in service-oriented activities encourages children to perform acts of kindness. This nurtures the “whole” child.

TIPS

Spring Party Planning Tips&Ideas Choose a bright color scheme

Create cute centerpieces Simple

Make your food look pretty

Opt for a global theme Pick a region

It’s spring—so think color! Light pastel colors always work for spring—lavender, yellow, pink, and sage green are some of our favorites.

Get creative when planning your party menu. You can include a dessert like this beautiful meringue wreath that doubles as festive decor.

Create simple party favors Don’t

arrangements of daisies fit the bill, or try using cupcake liners for a creative DIY centerpiece.

of the world and let that be a focus for your party planning. For example, you could use Spain as a guide, playing Spanish music and serving paella, ceviche, tapas, and sangria.

Use elegant white string lights

let your guests leave without a special gift! These cute mini flower boutiques are so easy to make and don’t blow your party budget.

String these inexpensive lights along fences, wrap them around small bushes, or hang them across a dining table to make a pretty statement.

Use mason jars as decor Mason jars are useful for holding flowers, candies, food, and more. Feature these DIY distressed mason jars for a nice touch of color.

Serve platters of fruit Fresh fruit makes for a beautiful and simple dessert— and can even make for an eye-catching centerpiece.

Decorate your front porch

Give guests a warm welcome with this spring set-up—your invitees will be delighted before they even knock on the door.

Add edible floral ice cubes Drop

these colorful ice cubes in your serving glasses or include them in a big bowl to cool wine bottles. 30 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M

Use white unscented candles

White unscented candles are classic and affordable. Buy them in different shapes and sizes—tea lights, floating votives, pillars—and crowd them together in groups on tables. Place them inside hurricanes if it’s going to be windy.

DECEMBER 2017

Serve food that works outdoors

Don’t offer a cheese platter or any type of food that can spoil. Instead, offer foods that can sit for a period of time and are safe to eat warm or at room temperature.

Focus on smaller bites There’s no

need for a big main dish! Unless you’re planning a formal sit-down dinner, explore side dish and appetizer options that make party planning and prep much easier for you.

Pick a signature cocktail Colorful,

refreshing drinks make a spring party much more fun. Serve sangria and fruit punch in pitchers and store in the fridge to keep it cool.

Plan ahead with serving proportions It’s best to plan for two and a half plates per person. For cocktails, make sure each guest is able to have at least two glasses for the first hour and then one glass for every hour after.

The History of the

UGLY CHRISTMAS S

W

O

ver the last couple of decades, our culture has refined its sense of irony and has formed an obsession with nostalgia. These two themes, in combination, have paved the way for the resurgence of the ugly Christmas sweater. In today’s world, it’s quite possible that you and your grandfather have an overlapping taste in outerwear. But how did it become acceptable to raid your grandfather’s closet and rock his bulky, oversized Christmas

sweaters? Fashion is cyclical. Clothing trends have always come, gone, and reappeared over the course of years. But it’s rare for attire to be considered both outmoded and trendy at the same time. The sweaters we now lovingly embrace as “ugly” peaked in earnest popularity in the 1980s. Very few styles can boast the same cross-generational appeal as Christmas sweaters. For every person who ironically loves an ugly sweater, there’s someone who appreciates it sincerely.

So how did the ugly christmas sweater renaissance begin?

When it comes to ugly sweaters, the more outdated and garish the better. So celebrate grandma’s festive, handmade,

one-size-fits-none creation. Throw on your most absurd Christmas pullover, get hot, get itchy, and take a look at the history of the ugly sweater—because no one wants to be that guy wearing a smart J. Crew fit to the ugly Christmas sweater party.

Origin of

“Jingle Bell Sweaters”

Christmas-themed sweaters were first produced on a grand scale in the 1950s, when the Christmas holiday was becoming increasingly commercialized. Initially referred to as “Jingle Bell Sweaters,” the first-gen ugly sweaters saw decades of modest popularity. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the Christmas sweater gained mainstream adoration. For clues about where exactly the ugly Christmas sweater revival began, we look to ’80s television. Specifically, we look to the iconic TV sitcom featuring the Huxtables and eponymously named after a comedian who won’t be mentioned in this piece. The family’s patriarch was such an enthusiast of knitted sweaters with ornate designs and clashing colors that his name became synonymous with the fashion. Syndication and the sustained cultural importance of the show likely contributed to the longevity of the ugly sweater as a fashion choice.

Recognizing the Humor in the Sweater The ugly sweater had a lot of screen time in the holiday classic National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Every Christmas season since the film’s release in 1989, we’ve seen the Griswold family looking fly in sweaters that are ridiculous by today’s standards and only semifashionable for the ’80s. The use of the sweaters in this film is a mainstream example of self-aware ugly Christmas sweater-wearing. In 1989, Chevy Chase’s sweaters walked the line between self-aware irony and sincere ’80s fashion.

Ugly Christmas Sweaters as Anti-Fashion The habit of wearing ugly sweaters as chic fashion statements mostly lay dormant through the ’90s. Then, in the new millennium, people started throwing ugly sweater parties. The authors of “Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Book: The Definitive Guide to Getting Your Ugly On” claim to have traced the origins of the now widespread ugly sweater party tradition to its roots in Vancouver, British Columbia. According to the book, two men named Chris Boyd and Jordan Birch are responsible for the firstever ugly Christmas sweater party, which took place at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver in 2002. Speaking with The Rush on Shaw TV, the godfathers of the tradition say they set out to organize “a cheesy, feel-good, festive party, and the sweaters were a main ingredient of that.” Little did they know that their minor tonguein-cheek event would evolve into such a cultural phenomenon, because you know not wearing an ugly Christmas sweater is the major party foul of the holiday season. 34 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . DECEMBER 2017

The Ugly Sweater as Haute Couture After gaining traction as, essentially, a large-scale inside joke, the ugly sweater made it’s way up to the world of high fashion. In 2010, Italian designer Riccardo Tisci debuted a series of angora pullovers with Givenchy. As part of its 2011 fall collection, Dolce & Gabbana unveiled its collection of so-ugly-it’s-beautiful sweaters. Over the last few years, the ugly Christmas sweater has become a mainstay of fall and winter runway fashion, and it has become common in retailers like H&M, Bloomingdale’s, and Macy’s. Just as the

JINGLE BELL SWEATER was during its inception in the 1950s. Even the NBA produces self-described

UGLY SWEATERS So, you could pay thousands of dollars for a designer ugly Christmas sweater, you could snag the Shaq-a-Claus sweater that Shaquille O’Neal is selling, you could hit up a thrift shop and get one cheap, or you could just rummage through your grandfather’s old clothes to find the dopest ugly sweater known to man. What is it about the ugly sweater that we love so much? Is it simply a sarcastic take on holiday excess? Does the goofiness of everyone’s outfits help people let their guard down? All we know for sure is that the ugly sweater is as stylish as it was in its ’80s heyday. So pull out the corniest gift your grandma made for you and don’t be that guy at the holiday party.
