Queridos familiares y amigos del Doral,

Happy Year 2017! With great joy, I present you our first issue of the new year! I want to thank all of our readers and the community of Doral as we wrap up another year publishing Live Doral Magazine.

Estos últimos meses hemos visto como mujeres se están manifestando en el mundo, dejando su voz en alto y advocando por derechos que sabemos nos corresponden. El mundo esta cambiando drásticamente cada día, a una velocidad difícil de alcanzar, pero irónicamente, en temas de respeto e igualdad no hemos logrado mucho todavía, a lo contrario, pareciera que estamos retrocediendo. Este pensamiento me hace soñar por un cambio, y al querer un cambio pienso que cada granito de arena cuenta. Por eso me he puesto la labor de aprender y conocer de cerca la historia de mujeres lideres, tanto del mundo, como de nuestra comunidad; y he descubierto que todas tienen algo en común, creen que pueden lograr un cambio. También me he dado cuenta que muchas de estas mujeres lideres también comparten una característica en particular, y es que les gusta empoderar a otras mujeres. Creo plenamente en el efecto que tenemos los seres humanos hacia los otros, y si las mujeres empezáramos a ser fuente de inspiración para otras, darnos una mano y aprovechar nuestro potencial, poco a poco, podremos lograr juntas impactar una comunidad, una sociedad y una nación.

The last few years have brought significant growth and change to Doral. We have seen the construction of several retail, residential and commercial projects. All of us have experienced firsthand the traffic issues that a growing community such as ours encounters. 2017 will finally be the year when we can all start to enjoy the new amenities and attractions that our city now offers.

With the construction of Downtown Doral, the soon to be open City Place Doral, Midtown Doral and Doral Legacy Park we have the qualities that will eventually make Doral a star city not only in South Florida, but across the entire state. New schools have also opened, new roads have been constructed and new jobs have been created all the while thousands of new residents have moved to Doral.

2017 also brings a change in the local political scene. We want to sincerely thank Mr. Luigi Boria for the tireless and wonderful work he has done to promote the City of Doral. His entrepreneurial instincts have worked to help the city grow and achieve the position it has today. We also want to extend a warm welcome to our new (again!)

Mayor, Mr. Juan Carlos Bermudez as he takes on the position of the leader of Doral. We are certain that Doral has a bright future and we as local residents are proud to serve the city and enjoy the growth : ) Blessings

Su sencillez y calidez humana estoy segura la hacen una excelente jefa, pero su visión y constancia están haciendo que el Palmetto General Hospital se encuentre liderando el camino en los avances de la medicina en el sur de nuestro estado.

IT’ S AL L IN T H E D ETAIL S How to get the biggest bang for your decorating dollar There’s a misconception that the more you spend on furniture the more stylish your home will look. Not true.

It’s everything you place around the space that completes it such as decorative accessories, lighting, window treatments and artwork. It’s in these details where everything comes together and a room begins to reflect your signature style. Therefore, when it’s time to buy furniture you have to spend your decorating dollars wisely.

LIVING ROOMS

The biggest mistake I see in homes is buying furniture that is the wrong scale for the room … in other words, way too big. This is especially relevant with sectionals. Homeowners look for comfort, but forget about space planning and usually end up with a piece of furniture that is too bulky and takes up too much room.

You get more bang for your buck when you invest in a modular sectional. The individual pieces allow you many configurations in the space, so you can create different looks. You can separate two of the armless pieces to use as accent chairs and many modular sectionals also have the option of a matching ottoman, which you can use next to the sofa to create a chaise or as a stand-alone coffee table. The possibilities are endless.

Storage is always important to display books, media and other collectibles. Traditional entertainment centers with the matching base and towers are a thing of the past. Nowadays, it’s about transitional pieces that are beautiful and functional such as open bookshelves with architectural details or classic glass doors on the front. These pieces give the living room an eclectic style that feels collected through the years and can still be used to frame a flat screen TV. The best part is they can also be moved into other spaces for a completely different use in an office or dining room.

BEDROOMS

From a decorating perspective, the bed is the focal point of the room and should make a statement on its own. I’m a big fan of upholstered headboards because they give the bedroom a custom look without having to spend too much money. The fabric is also a nice contrast in texture to the wood finish of the night stands and other furniture, which helps to break up the matching-set look.

There are many fabric patterns and designs to choose from including tufted, wingback, square or arched profile, nailhead trims and many more.

When you see a furniture grouping displayed at the store, keep in mind you can always mix and match the pieces with other sets to create a more personal style. Never feel obligated to buy the complete set only because it will save you money. It’s better to invest in a bed that you LOVE because in the long run, it’s less expensive to change out the other pieces when you get tired of the look of your bedroom than it is to buy a new bed. Night stands and dressers can be easily purchased from catalogs, department store chains and clearance centers for a great price.

DINING ROOMS

The same rule of mixing textures applies to a dining space given the basic furnishings. If the table and chairs are all the same wood finish, you missed an opportunity to make a style statement. Be open to combining a modern glass top table with more traditional wood chairs; mix a dark wood table with upholstered or leather side chairs; or combine all the three elements with a wood table, upholstered side chairs and then two arm chairs in a completely different style and fabric on either end of the table. They can be leather or even a natural fiber. Como dijo Picasso, “pintar es otra manera de llevar un diario”, así que en cierta forma la pintura también nos retrata los estados de ánimo del artista. Cada una de las obras de Nicolle Cure se sitúa en una etapa como banderas que marcan conquistas en su vida.

Los pinceles, el lápiz y la tinta entran en juego para expresar las múltiples imágenes, pensamientos y sentimientos que la palabra no alcanza a abarcar. “Me inspiran mis propias vivencias las buenas y las malas. Las interacciones diarias con familiares amigos y desconocidos que se cruzan por mi camino para darme enseñanzas que a primera vista parecen insignificantes, pero que al final terminan teniendo un gran impacto en mi vida”.

A lo largo de su trayectoria como artista, ha utilizado muchas técnicas y materiales con predominio de los acrílicos y las tintas. No se limita a pintar sobre lienzos o tablones sino también sobre superficies irregulares como figuras de madera, vidrio, tela o metal, incorporando tridimensionalidad a las obras.

NICOLLE CURE Artista plástica colombo- americana residente en Miami. Su arte, una mezcla inusual de lo abstracto y lo surrealista, de luz y de sombras, ha sido exhibido en diferentes salas y galerías en los EE.UU., Colombia, Corea del Sur y China.

Su vasta experiencia en diferentes técnicas visuales y materiales le ha permitido concebir una gran variedad de obras como la serie titulada Viaje Orgánico, en la que incorporó materiales reciclados entre ellos tablones de madera, trozos de papel, tela y arpillera. También utilizó fibra de vidrio y pinturas acrílicas para la creación de Por Mi Amor A Los Perros, con la cual celebra las emociones que una mascota puede alcanzar a despertar en un ser humano. Y en la serie titulada Rock & Roll y Otras Drogas Para El Alma, rinde homenaje a grandes éxitos musicales a través de la historia.

Obtuvo su Bachelor’s Degree en Publicidad y Comunicaciones en la Universidad de Florida.

ara muchos la palabra gimnasio era sinónimo de espacios con paredes llenas de espejos, complejas maquinas y gigantes pesas. Pero ahora la tendencia es otra, los gimnasios dejaron de ser sólo lugares para aumentar músculo o perder peso. ost people walk into an optical office looking for a new pair of glasses. What most people aren’t aware of is that there are more things involving the eye doctor than just a vision exam. After years of practicing optometry, I still haven’t found a way to separate the human eye from the human body. Our eyes rely on the same dietary input as the rest of our body and are just as vulnerable to diseases.

What do you think is the optometrician’s objective when shining a bright light into your eyes?. What we are searching for is vulnerability. We use the bright to evaluate your blood vessels and determine if you’re at risk for diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and strokes, all of which have a nutritional component to them.

There are many factors to be considered when calculating the absorption rates of nutrients in our food. Certain foods and/or Rx medications contain molecules that can either delay (inhibit) absorption or stop our body from producing certain isolates. As a result, rendering less healthy lives and creating a bridge to risk for nutritional deficiencies. What we don’t always know is that visiting the eye doctor can help prevent situations like such.

Now a days, we live in a world where more children are bound to be diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes by the age of 12. For those who are unfamiliar with T2D, this is formerly known as Adult Onset Diabetes, which by the way, today it is still the leading cause of blindness in America. Every year childhood and adult obesity rates are on the rise, nutrition has become more about satisfaction in the mouth, and less about satisfaction and benefit for the entire body. Advertisers trick you into thinking.

One example of nutritional depletion caused from prescription medications is statin medications, these drugs are in many times introduced into our bodies. The statin drug not only inhibits our livers’ ability to produce

excessive cholesterol, but also the production of Co-Q-10, our energy molecule. Doctors will often tell you that exercise is highly recommended to people that suffer from high cholesterol. But here’s one thing to keep in mind… how are you expected to work-out if your legs keep cramping from the adverse effects of the drugs you have been taking?

I’ve got news for you, folks. The more you concentrate at the grocer, the less you’ll need prescription medications, which usually come with more severe adverse effects than just lack of energy or cramping.

Which brings me back to my title question, “What did you have for breakfast today?”

Breakfast can be difficult. “I’m not hungry in the morning”, “I don’t have time to eat in the morning”, I’ve heard them all. Eating breakfast can cut your risk of diabetes or improve your prognosis if you’ve already been diagnosed with it, as long as you choose wisely. The following is an example of poor decisionmaking, followed by a couple of healthy alternatives.

2. Store inside the refrigerator overnight.

4. Substitute water with any unsweetened plant based milk of your choice and sweeten with local, raw honey, fruit or stevia.

“TEETH” The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act of 2010 (FATCA) gave the IRS enforcement and detection powers it never had before in its fight to combat international tax evasion and terrorism. By requiring non-US banks to register with the IRS and report US citizen and resident account holders to a centralized database, the days of trying to hide money offshore are gone.

ll US Citizens and legal residents are subject to US taxation on their worldwide income.

For example, interest earned on an account in Spain, is taxable in the US. The US is one of only 2 countries that tax their citizens even if they live outside the United States. The other country is a small African nation called Eritrea.

The IRS has made international tax compliance a priority over the last 10 years.

Well publicized battles with internal banking institutions such as UBS and Deutsche Bank have made US Citizens and legal residents pay attention to their obligations to report ownership in foreign bank and financial accounts.

REPORTING FOREIGN BANK AND FINANCIAL ACCOUNTS If you own a non-US bank or financial account that exceeded $10,000 at any time during the year, you are required to file Form FinCen 114, Report of Foreign Bank & Financial Accounts, by April 15th for the prior calendar year. If you have multiple accounts, you must aggregate the maximum values on each day to determine if the $10,000 threshold is met. Once the $10,000 is met, you must report all foreign accounts for that year.

Also, any income that you earn from the foreign account is required to be reported on your US income tax return. This is the requirement even if you do not withdraw the income from the account.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DO NOT REPORT MY FOREIGN ACCOUNTS? The IRS will impose a penalty equal to a maximum of $10,000 each year. If the IRS determines that you willfully (i.e. intentionally) failed to file the FinCen 114, then the IRS can impose a penalty equal to 50% of the maximum value in your foreign accounts during the year.

A GLANCE OF CUBA’S...

Cuba’s geographic location had a decisive influence on the character and style of the architecture and urbanism that covers the island. Throughout history, Cuba and its ports, particularly Havana, became the key to commerce between that city and other colonies and nations.

As a result, an important segment of the population amassed a considerable amount of wealth. This prosperity invited corsairs, pirates and others to prey upon the residents. Leaders were forced to build a wall next to which dwellings and buildings stood wall to wall, patio against patio, leaving their narrowest side as a façade along the fine streets or small plazas where blacks, whites, mulattos, rich and poor, believers of different creeds and non-believers lived together in their daily comings and goings. This close coexistence meant everybody was in their neighbor’s business, creating the unusual mix that is Cuban.

MOORISH ART The Arab occupation of Spain during eight centuries (from 711 to 1492) brought about the fusion of gothic and renaissance fundamentals with the Moorish elements of Muslim art. In 1492 Spain recovered Grenada, the last Arab citadel within their territory. At that time, Cuba was discovered and Moorish art came to the island. This style of architecture evolved in Cuba from the 16th to the 17th centuries, hand in hand with the history of this “new world”.

Moorish architecture in Cuba is represented by wider facades than those in Spain. Other elements include overhanging balconies, corner rooms, large doors and windows framed by columns that were initially painted on the walls and subsequently designed as reliefs and moldings.

As far as individual dwellings, they first appeared as single-storied with an interior patio which functioned as a lung for the building, allowing it to survive the rigors of the climate. Later on, homes added a second and even an intermediate floor, keeping the interior patio which was now surrounded by windows on different levels.

Samples of this type of architecture are: • Castillo de la Real Fuerza, built between 1558 and 1577.

• Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro, built between 1589 and 1630.

• Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta, built between 1590 and 1609.

The outer Wall of the city began being built in 1674 and was completed by 1797. By then, Cuban architecture had also assimilated baroque and neoclassical styles. Modern and eclectic elements appeared further on, in the twentieth century.

BAROQUE The baroque is the most prolific period for both domestic and civil buildings. Cuban homes were always larger than those of their counterparts in Cartagena de India and Santo Domingo. As wealthier families added a second story, Moorish elements combined with those of the Baroque to become what is known as the Cuban Baroque.

The compositional elements that define this period are the curved line as a basic element of design that meanders at the ends, the play of light on the walls to find the effect of chiaroscuro, and columns and pilasters that are attached to the walls as decorative elements losing its structural function and escorting empty niches. The symmetrical balance in the composition is achieved.

The portico serves as a transition between interior and exterior spaces, while protecting residents from the sun and tropical heat.

• Convento de San Francisco de Asis, built in 1730.

• Cathedral of Havana, built from 1748 to 1776.

• Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, built in 1776.

NEOCLASSICAL During this period, streets are improved with cobblestones or hardwood, trying to organize a walled city that threatens to explode. Street lighting is also enhanced, drainage and water supply lines are installed.

During the nineteenth century, Havana grew by leaps and bounds. Many new buildings were erected within and outside of the wall.

Miguel Tacón, then Capitain General of the island of Cuba, ordered the construction of a large boulevard bearing his name (these days known as Avenida Carlos III), a jail, a market and a theater.

In 1841, due to the population growth, the area outside the wall had to be divided into six neighborhoods as other areas surrounding them continued to grow. In 1863 the demolition of the wall began, allowing for better interaction between the old and new areas of the city.

During this period, palatial homes reached their highest level of ostentation, painting a marked distinction between them and the dwellings of those with less resources. Some mansions, abandoned by the aristocracy, were subdivided; citadels appeared.

Homes built during the previous periods were modernized and their fronts modified. In the facades, bas-reliefs and the classical orders appear. Ionic, Doric, Corinthian and Tuscan styles become popular in many houses.

Slanted tiled roofs gave way to flat ones and their décor became a more serious business than that of walls. Ceilings were frequently decorated with paintings, semicircular, rectangular or geometrical tiles paired with colored translucent crystals, while French shades covered the windows. Although wood was still used in blinds, windows and doors, iron replaced it in stair railings. Iron was also used extensively in lampposts, balcony railings and postings along the avenues that prevented carriages from going off the road. Latticed windows also celebrate the art of iron.

Urban spaces were filled with fountains that decorate plazas, and great avenues were constructed.

Examples of this type of architecture are: • Plaza de San Francisco y de la India, built in 1837.

ART NOUVEAU Born in Belgium and France in 1895 this style gained worldwide acceptance but disappeared during the First World War. It arrived at the Cuban shores much later, coupled with the eclectic movement.

This style is based on the curved line that meanders like a grapevine. Decorative motifs are always related to flowers and herbs. The insides of the homes are filled with iron that has been superbly worked.

Crown moldings and baseboards are made with tiles decorated with motifs of the forest.

Glass works are also masterful in lamps and stained glass.

Examples of this style are: • Loma del mazo en la Víbora.

ECLECTICISM The birth of the Republic in 1902 brought about the introduction of the eclectic style -or sum of styles- that lasted for thirty years, even though many of its models are still visible today. It first appeared in the Vedado area and in 1906 was truly born in the Cuban School of Architecture. The buildings that reflect this style are: •Gran Teatro de la Habana, built in the 1920s.

•Capitolio Nacional, built between 1922 and 1929.

•Presidential Palace, built in 1920.

Homes start their separation from the street with fences and surrounding walls that

ART DECO This style is firsts found in Cuba after the First World War. It was alive and well on the island from 1923 into the 1940s. It is reflected in works such as: •Hospital Maternidad Obrera.

•Edificio de San Lázaro y Soledad.

•López Serrano building on 11th Street.

Art Deco arrived in Cuba from the United States, bringing with it the influence of Miles Van der Rohe and the Chicago School of Design. New design elements include triangles and geometric shapes, with straight lines being the basis in all compositions.

These elements were applied to every aspect of the home or building: roofs, doors,

windows, lamps, furniture and, most of all, frontages.

REVOLUTION (1959 – Present Day) The radical transformation of Cuban society from capitalism to socialism, also touched Cuban architecture. Urban development stopped and a new process of low-income housing for farmers began.

In general terms, buildings from 1959 to 1969 are characterized by their simple and constructive forms, reflecting the need to find technical solutions that are light and easy to implement. The strong Soviet influence lends its love for symmetry and space-saving efforts to this era. Prefabrication is seen for the first time in order to cover huge public spaces.

By the second decade, prefab reaches most architectural subjects and is applied to schools, hotels, hospitals and dwellings.

New neighborhoods arise, all devoid of art.

The following decade brings a focus on all formal aspects, and a desire to recover cultural and identity values. Postmodernism raises its head and it sometimes looks so frail that it vanishes in an instant. After the fall of the Soviet Union and the tourist boom of the 1990s, new modern hotels are built.

These reflect the influence of contemporary western architecture with high-rises of steel and glass, such as: • Meliá Cohiba Hotel.

•1 teaspoon ground turmeric •3 teaspoons almond milk •3 teaspoons baking soda Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl, and stir to combine.

Using clean hands, massage over clean, damp skin with fingertips starting with your chin and working upward in small circles. Rinse and follow with moisturizer

Turmeric Acne Mask

•Organic apple cider vinegar •1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric •1 tablespoon of organic, raw honey (preferably Manuka honey) •Milk Apply apple cider vinegar to a cotton ball and swipe all over the skin. Wait about five minutes before you apply the mask.

Mix the turmeric powder with the honey. Use your clean hands to apply the mask, avoiding the eye area. Let the mask sit for 1520 minutes, then rinse with warm water. If the turmeric powder leaves a yellowish tint on the skin, use a milksoaked cotton ball to go over stained areas. Repeat mask twice a week.

Rinse off in the shower, scrubbing gently to remove.

E

l día en que se aprende esa verdad de la física que afirma que la suma de todas las fuerzas es igual a cero, la frase “te amo con todas mis fuerzas” da un giro de ciento ochenta grados con respecto a su significado y se convierte en un “no me importas para nada” ingeniosamente disfrazado. Una persona que haya adoptado una conducta pasivo agresiva con respecto a otra, muy fácilmente le dirá esto con ojos enamorados mientras por dentro no está sino sonriendo con maldad, levantando una ceja, riendo elegantemente y con soberbia (por alguna razón, como escritora, mis personajes malvados siempre son bien distinguidos en cuanto a sus maneras y formas de vestir).

Ahora, a ponernos serios. Lo primero y más importante es que la pasivo agresividad no es un trastorno. Fue considerada un trastorno de la personalidad hasta el volumen 4 del Manual Estadístico de Diagnóstico de Trastornos Mentales, sin embargo, a partir del año 2013, con la publicación del quinto volumen del mismo manual, pasó a ser calificado como una conducta. La pasivo agresividad puede ser también un síntoma

de algún otro trastorno mental, como la esquizofrenia o el trastorno bipolar, pero repito: por sí misma, una conducta pasivo agresiva no es más que eso, una conducta, por lo que no se puede diagnosticar. Ahora, ¿cómo se puede determinar? ¿Cuáles son sus características? Bien, tiene varias maneras de mostrarse, ya sea a través de cierta hostilidad, comentarios sarcásticos o incluso de la misma negligencia. Es una resistencia a actuar como se espera que se actúe normalmente en una situación determinada, ya sea en el hogar o en el trabajo, una actitud negativa constante hacia los favores pedidos o hacia cualquier circunstancia en general. Por ejemplo, alguien a quien se le pide un favor, ya sea incluso comprar jugo de naranja, y compra jugo de manzana con el puro fin de “no ser importunado” nunca más. Un ejemplo de negligencia pasivo agresiva del cual fui testigo hace muchos años, fue en una muchacha que, si bien aún quería a su novio, ya sus sentimientos románticos hacia él se habían esfumado. El novio vivía en otra ciudad pero viajaba todos los fines de semana para visitar a su indiferente pareja. ¿Qué pasaba? Que cuando él llegaba a buscarla, a sabiendas ambos de que tenían los días y las horas contadas, ella no estaba lista. Estaba apenas saliendo de la ducha y se tardaba en escoger lo que se iba a poner sin ningún tipo de apresuramiento. Por supuesto, tras varios meses durante los cuales esta triste escena se repitió, él terminó con ella, alegando que sabía que ella ya no lo quería.

Así es. Solo por eso, porque ella se tardaba en estar lista. A algunos les sonará como una exageración; yo creo que este muchacho fue muy inteligente.

Las personas pasivo agresivas no afrontan cara a cara sus problemas con aquellos que conforman su entorno, por el contrario,

mientras fingen que todo está bien, buscan maneras indetectables de dar a conocer su descontento o rabia. Una vez asistí como oyente a una clase de salud mental, el profesor, muy bueno, por cierto, nos dijo: es verdad que una persona que pelea mucho puede ser bastante tediosa, pero, les advierto, cuídense de una persona que no pelea nunca, porque será esa la que un día “sin querer” pondrá un laxante en su sopa, justamente la noche en que tengan que dar la conferencia más importante de su vida y, desde su asiento, sonreirán detrás de su cara de preocupación viéndolos pasar el mal rato que ellos ocasionaron. Da miedo, ¿verdad? ¡Ahora! Como no estamos hablando de un trastorno, la pasivo agresividad es un tipo de conducta a la que puede recurrir todo el mundo, decisión que siempre, repito, siempre es un error, sin embargo, nadie está exento de haber optado, alguna vez, por adoptar una conducta pasivo agresiva a la hora de lidiar con algún conflicto interpersonal, pero como cualquier acto recurrente, se puede volver un hábito, y aquí sí estaríamos hablando de un verdadero problema.

Each year, for six straight days, our city gets a little louder. The phenomenon behind the music and the colorful parties is known as Miami Music Week & Winter Music Conference.

F

or exactly one week during the month of March our city becomes one of the world’s greatest migration destinations for dance-music lovers. Tourists and locals alike brave the dangers of expensive drinks, judgmental doormen, and increasing Uber pricing – all just to get a little taste of some of the world’s best DJs. For those who might be unfamiliar, WMC is the EDM world’s most influential industry conference that’s held every year in the Magic City and also includes the International Dance Music Awards. In its 32nd consecutive year, it is a pivotal platform for the advancement of the industry. During WMC, music enthusiasts, artists, DJs and industry delegates from over 70 countries converge on Miami Beach for a concentrated schedule of more than 400 events, parties, seminars and workshops. It’s a “Who’s Who” of world-renowned DJs, beat smiths, producers, mix masters, and other EDM movers and shakers. In other words, the sort of place where an aspiring DJ would want to be seen.

The hype increases when MMW comes in hot like a side of bacon. Miami Music Week is one of the world’s most recognized electronic music events. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people from across the globe descend onto Miami during the last week of March as the city transforms itself into a dance music paradise. Now in its seventh year, the MMW brand unifies events in the city as every venue opens its doors for a weeklong marathon of parties that collectively feature almost every major artist in the electronic dance music scene. In 2016, over 1,180 artists performed at 260+ events hosted at over 78 venues throuhgout the city.

FIVE SOFT SKILLS EVERY CHILD NEEDS FOR

SUCCESS

arents hear often that their children need a solid foundation of academic knowledge to flourish in college and beyond. However, there are many other attributes that help children lead successful, fulfilling lives.

“When it comes to life and career, most people can attest that technical skills only get one so far,” says Sandra Izaof the Doral Huntington Learning Center. “We tell parents regularly that while academic aptitude matters, there are a number of personal characteristics that will set their children apart and help them do well in life.”

Iza says that successful students and people possess these five “soft” skills and encourages parents to nurture them in their children whenever possible: COMMUNICATION SKILLS – Verbal and nonverbal communication skills are frequently touted as the most important skills in any career. Parents should encourage their children to express their ideas and opinions clearly when writing or speaking, but it’s also crucial to build careful, attentive listening skills as well.

EMPATHY – Empathy is one component of emotional intelligence and something that helps people develop strong interpersonal connections—a key to success in life. Parents can help their children learn to recognize how their actions and words impact and influence others, both positively and negatively. The ability to understand others’ feelings is critical for building good relationships—with friends as well as teachers, classmates, coworkers and bosses.

PERSEVERANCE – Most parents have recited the age-old adage, “If at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again,” to their children before. Without question, life is full of challenges. One of the most important skills children can acquire is that of perseverance. Parents can facilitate the development of this trait by teaching their children to set goals and lay out smaller steps toward achieving those goals and by always talking about challenges as opportunities for learning and growth.

TEAMWORK – Students who are able to work effectively with all types of people have a leg up in college and the working world. Luckily for parents, today’s teachers often have their students collaborate on a variety of projects.

At home, parents can offer their children opportunities to contribute and debate ideas and work with their siblings to complete tasks.

PROBLEM-SOLVING – Children who take a proactive approach to solving problems and overcoming roadblocks have a big advantage.

When facing problems large and small, children should try out different solutions.

Parents can support this by encouraging their children to talk about what worked and didn’t work with each attempted solution and helping them think through alternatives.

Soft skills don’t come naturally to everyone, but with effort and practice, parents can foster their children’s development of these personal traits.

“Soft skills are important throughout school, but they become essential in one’s career,” says Iza. “Parents who consistently and patiently work with their children to help them become adaptable, hard-working problemsolvers with the critical thinking skills to navigate any issue are preparing them for life success.”

Polbo Á Feira

(cuatro raciones):

PULPO A LA GALLEGA

CONOCE Y PREPARA LA RECETA MAS FAMOSA DE ESPAÑA

• 1 pulpo de 2 kg • 500 gramos de patatas • Pimentón • Pimentón picante • Sal • Aceite de oliva

Preparación: •Si es un pulpo fresco, primero debemos ablandarlo; hay dos formas de hacerlo: o se le golpea con un rodillo de madera hasta que se ablande, o congelarlo durante dos días y descongelarlo en el frigorífico el día antes de cocinarlo (ponlo en un recipiente, porque soltará mucho líquido).

•Corta la cebolla en daditos y ponla en una olla con agua. Cuando empiece a hervir es el momento de introducir el pulpo. Cógelo de la cabeza e introdúcelo en la olla tres veces.

Después de la tercera vez lo introduces y lo dejas que se cocine durante 50 minutos.

•Una vez cocinado, retira la olla del fuego y déjalo enfriar durante 15 minutos.

l pulpo a la gallega oriundo de Galicia nos lleva a hace unos siglos, ya que el pulpo se ha consumido en esta comunidad autónoma por mas tiempo del que podemos recordar.

El pulpo era uno de los pocos productos del mar que se transportaba desde las costas a ciudades del interior, y de hecho era más apreciado en estos sitios que en ciudades de mar.

Cuando se descubrió América aparecieron muchos productos en los mercados españoles, entre ellos una falsa especia obtenida de cayenas machacadas que en España se llama pimentón.

El pimentón no sólo le da al plato un matiz cobrizo muy apetecible, sino que era ideal para conservar comida en aquellos tiempos anteriores a los productos congelados y el desarrollo del transporte de alimentos por tierra.

Hace unos 125 años, cuando los arrieros acudían a ferias de ganado, compraban grandes cantidades de pulpo y lo preparaban con aceite y pimentón. Bastante sencillo.

El nombre en gallego para pulpo a la gallega es “pulpo a feira” por una razón muy sencilla.

Durante las ferias los granjeros compraban o vendían ganado y sus productos hortícolas, etc, y compraban productos básicos como sal, azúcar u otros a los que no tenían acceso a diario.El viaje a la ciudad donde se celebraba la feria llevaba bastante tiempo, y la mayoría de la gente se quedaba a comer o a cenar. Los que se quedaban cerca del recinto ferial podían comer pulpo (como hemos mencionado antes, era un plato muy típico en las ferias).

Las “pulpeiras”, mujeres especializadas en cocinar pulpo, cocinaban al animal en calderos de cobre y lo serváin en paltos de madera.

Se dice que el caldero de cobre le aporta un sabor incomparable que es imposible conseguir con cualquier otro material.

Hoy en día la historia es un poco distinta.

No necesitamos el pimentón para conservar la comida, ya que la podemos congelar, pero en Galicia, que es aún una región muy rural, es aún posible acudir a una feria de ganado y comer pulpo a la gallega. Ver el proceso de preparación también tiene bastante magia, y es posible contemplarlo en muchos lugares de Galicia.

•Con el mismo agua en la que el pulpo fue cocinado, cuece las patatas (previamente peladas y cortadas en dados). Mientras hierven, corta el pulpo en rodajas medianas.

•Cuando las patatas estén listas, retíralas del agua y ponlas en una bandeja. Las rodajas de pulpo se colocan sobre la patata.

El toque final es añadir el aceite de oliva y el pimentón y abundante sal gruesa. Puedes preparar una vinagreta previamente o añadir los ingredientes por separado.
