“Worship is really important to a believer who’s growing because worship reminds you that you’re in a relationship with a person.” —Mark Hall

LAST YEAR, WE CELEBRATED FIVE YEARS OF GIVING GOD THE GLORY WITH THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE K-LOVE FAN AWARDS. Matthew West and Elisabeth Hasselbeck once again co-hosted the star-studded evening. Danny Gokey kicked off the festivities with a high-energy performance followed by appearances from other fan favorites, including Jeremy Camp, Britt Nicole, Hawk Nelson, Kari Jobe, Jesus Culture and many more. for KING & COUNTRY ended the night holding their record for the most award wins in K-LOVE Fan Awards history after snagging three more trophies in 2017 for Artist of the Year, Group/Duo of the Year and Song of the Year (“Priceless”). For the first time ever, the K-LOVE Fan Awards hit the big screen for a one night only Fathom Event at select movie theaters nationwide. Furthermore, in 2017 K-LOVE partnered with the Military Warriors Support Foundation (MWSF) to aid veterans and their loved ones. For every 500,000 votes cast, K-LOVE assisted MWSF in placing a combat wounded hero or Gold Star spouse into a newly-renovated, mortgage-free home. Before we unveil tonight’s winners, let’s look back with fondness at last year’s most memorable moments…

hen people think of the Grand Ole Opry, they naturally conjure images of the birthplace of country music. After all, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash have all stepped into the infamous circle to perform their songs. While the Grand Ole Opry has continued to help define the genre of country music over the past 90 years, it’s also welcomed numerous Christian artists onto its hallowed stage with open arms. Matthew West, Chris Tomlin, Francesca Battistelli and NEEDTOBREATHE are just a few of the Christian artists who have made their Grand Ole Opry debut through the years. Artists like Steven Curtis Chapman continue to play the Opry on a regular basis. It’s a coveted invitation that artists of any genre don’t take lightly. The first Opry radio show aired on November 28, 1925, and quickly became a popular medium that showcased rising country talent. The show eventually evolved into a live performance format but can still be heard on WSM radio today. Now, each week, the Opry takes place right here in this auditorium. Shows featuring multiple artists and lasting well over two hours take place every Friday and Saturday night (and on

select Tuesdays and Wednesdays), but you don’t have to be in Music City to enjoy the live music. You can listen live on opry.com as country legends and current chart-toppers alike perform. The Grand Ole Opry House you’re now sitting in became the first venue built specifically as the permanent home for the Grand Ole Opry. President Richard Nixon was in attendance the night it opened on March 16, 1974. Prior to that, the Grand Ole Opry was held at Nashville’s iconic Ryman Auditorium. The Ryman still hosts the Opry during the winter months, spotlighting performances from ace musicians like Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill to appearances by superstars like Carrie Underwood and Little Big Town. During the historic flood of 2010, the Grand Ole Opry House suffered extensive damage and was temporarily closed for five months of restoration work. Restored to its former glory, today the Grand Ole Opry House serves as a welcome respite for music’s biggest and brightest stars—across country, bluegrass, Americana and Christian music.

HOW COULD YOU CHANGE THE WORLD? We asked ourselves the same question. Pastor Sosthen moved his family of 13 into a refugee camp in Northern Uganda in 2016. It’s a place with little food, poor education, mud huts, and limited freedom, but he wanted to accelerate the Gospel among his people. Cory Asbury

Jasmine Murray

WRITTEN BY CORY ASBURY, CALEB CULVER

WRITTEN BY JASMINE MURRAY, JEFF PARDO

AND RAN JACKSON

AND TONY WOOD

In just seven weeks, Cory Asbury’s “Reckless Love” climbed to the top of the radio charts, solidifying its place as one of the biggest songs of the year. Part of the Bethel Music family, Asbury was most recently featured on the multi-artist “Outcry Tour.” The father of three serves as the worship pastor of Michigan’s Radiant Church.

An anthem of courage, “Fearless” became Jasmine Murray’s first Top 5 single at radio. The song serves as the title track for her upcoming debut LP releasing June 15. The 25 year old has already spent time on the road with Mandisa and Danny Gokey, and she’ll join Mandisa and other strong female vocalists again this fall for the “Girls Night Out Tour.”

“different” Micah Tyler

WRITTEN BY MICAH TYLER AND KYLE LEE

The title track of his debut album, Different, is the follow-up to Micah Tyler’s first multi-format No. 1 hit, “Never Been A Moment.” The Texas-native wrote “Different” from a place of insecurity, ultimately realizing our goal as Christ followers is to be different. The former youth pastor first caught the attention of fans when his hilarious “Millennials” video went viral.

“point to you”

Tauren Wells

We Are Messengers

WRITTEN BY TAUREN WELLS, CHUCK BUTLER

WRITTEN BY DARREN MULLIGAN AND SETH MOSLEY

AND JONATHAN SMITH

The third single from We Are Messengers’ self-titled debut, “Point To You,” has become a staple at radio. We Are Messengers serves as the moniker for Darren Mulligan, the group’s frontman and primary lyricist. Mulligan joined the “K-LOVE Christmas Tour” in 2017, and he recently headlined the “Hope is The Message Tour” this spring.

Spotify named “Hills and Valleys” one of the most streamed songs of 2017. In addition, the popular track garnered Tauren Wells two GRAMMY® nominations. The former member of vocal group Royal Tailor performed the song on a 22-city tour opening for Lionel Richie and Mariah Carey in 2017. He also joined the Air 1 Positive Hits Tour last fall.

“Jesus, I Believe” Big Daddy Weave

WRITTEN BY MIKE WEAVER AND JASON INGRAM

“This song is really just about our posture, which is to pray and to cry out like Jesus taught us to. The biggest lie that the enemy wants us to believe is that at the darkest and lowest point, that’s the end—that it’s over. And it’s not.” —Mike Weaver “It’s just a matter of seeing the Lord for who He is and remembering to look at the Lord… He’s what we can believe in; He’s what we can hope for, because He doesn’t let us down.” —Jay Weaver

“reckless lOve” cOry asbury

WRITTEN BY CORY ASBURY, CALEB CULVER AND RAN JACKSON

“‘Reckless Love’ really is the song of my whole life. That phrase kind of dropped in my heart about five years ago. I just started experiencing the kindness of the Father, the goodness of the Father in a way that I’d never experienced before. So that phrase, ‘The overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God’ was just lodged [inside me]. I didn’t know what to do with it. One night, I woke up—it was probably 3 a.m.—and I had the full melody for that chorus. I grabbed my iPhone, and I ran in the closet and I closed the door and I sang it into my iPhone. The next day, I just sat down at the piano and pounded out the whole chorus.” —Cory Asbury

ElevatiOn WOrship

WRITTEN BY STEVEN FURTICK, CHRIS BROWN, WADE JOYE AND MACK BROCK

“Sometimes when you’re just about to give up on an idea, just when you’re about to throw it away, you’ll see what it was meant to be all along… I remember back in 2014, it was a very complicated thought that I had for the song… It sat around for six months, and I said, ‘Well, we should probably just throw it away… Unless, hang on, what if it was just 6/8 time and it was ‘O Come to the Altar’?… It’s going to be an invitation.’ Four hours later, we had the song; and three-and-a-half years later, it was the No. 1 song of all Christian streaming songs… Just when I thought it was nothing, God said, ‘Give me that back.’”

“There’s not a single one of us that can’t identify with and understand what it feels like to be shackled and bound to something when we know we’re not living in the freedom that we’ve been given through Christ. This song, it’s so hopeful, because our hope is in something as grand as the one and only Son of God… My hope is in Jesus.” —Crowder

“What A Beautiful Name”

WRITTEN BY BENJAMIN HASTINGS, JOEL HOUSTON AND MICHAEL FATKIN

“This song is about God as an artisan; it’s about God as an artist working His masterpiece into a work of art that’s called love. It began with Creation, and it was finished at the cross; and now it continues to be rebirthed and restored in and through us. And the whole picture is response… For all we don’t know, and for all we do, and for all we think we’ve got figured out, for all the questions we still have; ultimately, what we need to do is live in response— not to what we think God wants, but in response to what He’s done and what He said He’s going to do.” —Joel Houston

HillsOng WOrship

WRITTEN BY BROOKE LIGERTWOOD AND BEN FIELDING

“Anyone who has come face-to-face with their own flaws and sin and received the grace of Jesus can undoubtedly say that it’s the most beautiful thing ever. The name of Jesus is beautiful; it’s wonderful. We loved the nostalgia of that word. Wonderful isn’t a really cool word, and so I think we used it quite deliberately, because I think there’s a power to that to kind of deliberately insert a little bit of wonder in there… We really loved the idea of singing about the name of Jesus in a way that unfolded some of the facets of the beauty, wonder and power of His name.” —Brooke Ligertwood

“oh My sOul”

casting crOwns

WRITTEN BY MARK HALL AND BERNIE HERMS

“One of my favorite Scriptures is where David says, ‘Why so downcast, oh my soul? Put your hope in God.’ And it’s basically David talking to himself. I identify with David in a lot of ways. He would have courage, but then he’d fall on his face. He was real about it. That’s how he prayed. If he was mad, he prayed mad. If he was confused, he prayed confused. He didn’t add anything to it, just talked about life like it was when he was talking to God, and that’s how I’ve always prayed… But there’s a point where the things you feel and fear have to face the God you know. In a storm, you’ve got to go with what you know, more than what you feel. I remember going into the office that night, after [being diagnosed with cancer], and sitting down at the keyboard. The very first thing that came out of my mouth was, ‘Oh my soul, why are you weary?’” —Mark Hall

“reckless lOve”

cOry asbury

WRITTEN BY CORY ASBURY, CALEB CULVER AND RAN JACKSON

“A lot of people have asked why I used the word reckless to describe God. I see the love of God as something wild, insane, crazy—the way that He pursues, the way that He chases us down, the way that He loves, I believe, is reckless. So we were going after that really furious, sort of violent language, to speak of the nature of the love of God. It never backs down; it doesn’t give up. Jesus came to seek and save the lost… The reckless love of God says, ‘I will stop at nothing to have your heart.’” —Cory Asbury

“Bleed The Same” Mandisa

(feat. TobyMac) WRITTEN BY MANDISA, CHRISTOPHER STEVENS, BRYAN FOWLER AND TOBY MCKEEHAN

“We are never going to find healing for our land by yelling and screaming at one another. We’re not going to find it by fighting with one another. The only way that we can do that is by coming together and by realizing that we may look different on the outside, but we all bleed the same on the inside… My prayer with this song is that people will be able to look at one another and not be colorblind. Let’s actually see color. Let’s celebrate our differences, but let’s realize that the one thing that unites us and brings us together is the blood of Jesus.” —Mandisa

mercyme

WRITTEN BY MERCYME, DAVID GARCIA, BEN GLOVER, CRYSTAL LEWIS AND TIM TIMMONS

“We’ve all had bad days. I’ve had awful days with a child with a chronic illness, and there are times when I just [feel like I] can’t do this anymore. I want to be like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego who say, ‘I know that God will deliver me, but if He doesn’t, I’m still not going to bow. I’ll still worship Him. He’s still worthy to be praised.’ I want to be that guy, and that’s what this song talks about. I know what He’s capable of, but even if He doesn’t come through, He’s still my hope because of what He’s already done.” —Bart Millard

“I just need u.”

“fear is a liar”

tObymac

WRITTEN BY TOBY MCKEEHAN, BRYAN FOWLER

AND BLAKE NEESMITH

“I don’t know how it happens, but somehow or another, the world tricks us into thinking it’s going to satisfy us. And it happens to me over and over and over again. The very things I look to that I think will satisfy me, fail me. How can I wake up with a house full of beautiful kids, but still wake up heavy-hearted, wake up lonely? I think it’s cause I’m counting on things that will never satisfy me. I think it’s easy to look to those things to fulfill us—even as far as a husband and wife relationship. When we start looking to that to fulfill us, sooner or later, it will let us down. Human love falls short of God’s love. That’s why in this song, I just cry out, ‘I just need You.’” —TobyMac

zach williams

WRITTEN BY ZACH WILLIAMS, JONATHAN SMITH AND JASON INGRAM

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7, NLT) “I feel like a lot of times the devil tries to use my past against me. When I step on stage, I hear that I don’t deserve to be up here and that I don’t belong, but I’m not who the devil says I am. I’m who God says I am.” —Zach Williams
