TONIGHT’S TROPHY Barton Dramer, who creates art under his studio brand, Already Been Chewed LLC, designed the K-LOVE Fan Awards trophy. The trophy takes the form of a ‘K,’ the most recognizable aspect of the K-LOVE name. The large letter is based off the branding artwork and made up of guitar parts, a keyboard and speaker boxes. A trophy company recreated Dramer’s 3D renderings into a format that would work best with their trophy molds to create the award winners will receive tonight.

Welcome Welcome to the K-LOVE Fan Awards. I am so excited for this night! The most often asked question, leading up to tonight, has been, “Why is K-LOVE doing this?” To me it’s always been simple. I feel K-LOVE’s role is to be the link between the Christian community and you, the listeners. You tell us daily how God has used music and inspiring stories to make a positive difference in your life. All of us at K-LOVE felt the natural “next step” was to link you directly with those making a difference for Christ. Now, it is your turn to acknowledge and honor those who are serving Christ through their lives. You get to tell them they matter and make a difference. You get to spur them on. Galatians 6:10 says, “…as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” Our opportunity is tonight, inside the historic Ryman Auditorium! Along with our friends at Pepsi and World Vision, let’s celebrate the artists, athletes, entertainers, authors and unsung heroes we consider family. My wish for you tonight is that you’ll be inspired, be encouraged and have fun!

Mike Novak — President and CEO, K-LOVE & Air 1 Radio

for more than a decade it has been a joy to co-create companies that are innovative and unique. Once again, my team and I have stepped out to establish something as a first in the Christian community. Tonight is the culmination. “It’s about time” is a phrase I’ve heard over and over again when describing the first fan-voted Christian awards show, a night that brings together the best athletes, musicians, authors and entertainers who all wear Jesus’ name. Then add in the best in Christian radio, Pepsi, World Vision, “Duck Dynasty,” and YOU, the fans, and well, there you have it...the first annual K-LOVE Fan Awards. May each of us go home refreshed and renewed; and always remember as fellow believers that each day we have the privilege of dining with a Prophet, Priest and King, the Lord Jesus. May you be blessed, lives be changed, nominees be recognized and Christ be honored.

WELCOME

TONIGHT IS A GOOD NIGHT! It’s a night for all of us to celebrate, to unleash gratitude and enjoy all the good things Jesus has provided in each of our lives. I want to welcome you to the inaugural K-LOVE Fan Awards. As we gather here in the historic Ryman Auditorium—a venue that represents so much to our artist and music community—it’s only right that we take a moment to pause and reflect on the journey that brought us here. As we began dreaming about this event and what it might mean for all of us who are participating, a clear picture emerged. We wanted to express our appreciation and our thanks to the people in the music, sports and media community that help to strengthen our faith. But we also wanted to recognize the impact for Christ that each of them have in our culture. And so we reached this mission statement: The K-LOVE Fan Awards’ mission is to create a fan experience that celebrates and promotes artists, athletes, authors and entertainers who, with excellence, engage and impact popular culture for Jesus Christ. I want to offer my congratulations to every single one of our nominees. Each of them have inspired me, and I’m honored to share this evening with everyone here. All of us are fans of great music and inspiring content that draws people closer to God. Tonight, we want to honor the people who help lead us in this way, as well as God who breathes His creativity and love into them. So, have fun, enjoy the show; and I pray that you will return home inspired by the awesome privilege of working alongside each other in making Jesus known.

DAVID PIERCE — Chief Creative Officer, K-LOVE & Air 1 Radio

K-LOVE FAN AWARDS PARTICIPANTS, As a fan of Christian music, it is an honor and a joy to be able to support the K-LOVE Fan Awards. This is music with a purpose. It changes the lives it touches. As a father, I have to smile when I hear my 9-year-old daughter, Hallie, singing at the top of her lungs in the shower to a Francesca Battistelli, Matt Maher or Audrey Assad song. Or when my 8-year-old son, Harry, is building with his Legos and sings a cappella to Matthew West or TobyMac’s latest hit. THE CRISP FAMILY Lee, Stacie, Hallie & Harry My family has had the honor to get to know many of the artists and their families. The life they have been called to lead takes sacrifice. The sacrifices they make are shared by their families. I applaud the spouses for their commitment to this cause, whether they are with the artists on the road or keeping the family life going at home. As a Marine veteran, I can relate to those personal sacrifices. St. Augustine of Hippo wrote: To fall in love with God is the greatest romance. To seek Him is the greatest adventure. To find Him is the greatest human achievement. Thank you fans, artists and families for sharing this great adventure with us.

H. LEE CRISP III — President

WELCOME

DEAR CHRISTIAN MUSIC FANS, As Mayor of Music City, it is a pleasure to welcome each of you to Nashville as you take part in the first ever K-LOVE Fan Awards. We may be best known as the home of country music, but we are honored that the Christian music industry also calls Nashville its hub. I’m also thrilled the K-LOVE Fan Awards will take place at the Ryman Auditorium. The Mother Church of Music is a beautiful and fitting location. Whether you are visiting us for the first time or have been to Nashville before, I am certain that you will have the opportunity to experience Southern hospitality and friendliness that our city is famous for. While in Music City, I encourage you to visit our city’s many landmarks, such as the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the Country Music Hall of Fame; and historical sites such as The Hermitage (home of Andrew Jackson), Fort Nashborough and Fort Negley. In addition, please consider visiting the Parthenon, one of our most beloved icons, located in beautiful Centennial Park, and our brand-new Music City Center, which has just had its grand opening. It is my sincere wish that your visit is a great success and you have the opportunity to experience firsthand why Rolling Stone magazine selected Nashville the No. 1 music scene in the country. Enjoy your stay, and we hope to see you back in years to come. Regards,

KARL F. DEAN — Mayor, Nashville, Tenn.

WELCOME TO THE

RYMAN AUDITORIUM!

If these walls could talk, oh the stories they would tell! Nashville businessman Captain Thomas Ryman, who owned a string of saloons and a fleet of riverboats called the Ryman Line, commissioned the construction of the building you’re now sitting in after attending a revival preached by Rev. Sam Jones. Ryman was so deeply affected by Jones’ words, he vowed to build a place large enough for others to hear the pastor’s message. The Union Gospel Tabernacle, as the Ryman was originally called, took seven years and approximately $100,000 to complete. On June 1, 1892, Rev. Jones preached his first sermon in the newly constructed building. When Ryman passed away in 1904, it was Jones who proposed the name of the building be changed to the Ryman Auditorium in his honor. In the years that followed, the Ryman become a center for not only revivals, but entertainment, lectures, boxing matches, livestock auctions and political debates. WSM’s esteemed Grand Ole Opry called The Ryman home for 31 years, introducing the world to musicians who would go on to become some of the most well-known names in country music. When the Opry moved to its new building at Opryland in 1974, the Ryman remained mostly vacant and in disrepair until 1992 when Emmylou Harris and her band, the Nash Ramblers, played a series of concerts here, renewing interest in the historic venue. After some modest renovations, with special care to maintain as much of the original structure as possible, the Mother Church of Country Music officially reopened in 1994 as an intimate performance venue and museum. Since first opening its doors in 1892, the historic Ryman stage has played host to legendary stars in all genres of entertainment, including Will Rogers, Hank Williams, Earl Scruggs, Katherine Hepburn, Bob Hope, Doris Day, Charlie Chaplin, Patsy Cline and Elvis. The Ryman has housed lectures by Helen Keller, President Teddy Roosevelt, his wife Eleanor, and President William Taft. Johnny Cash met his future wife, June Carter, backstage. Scenes from Coal Miner’s Daughter were filmed here, as well as episodes of “The Johnny Cash Show” and an episode of Dolly Parton’s TV variety show. In recent years, everyone from Lady Antebellum, Keith Urban and Martina McBride to Kelly Clarkson, Mumford & Sons and FUN. have graced the stage. Recent episodes of ABC’s hit show “Nashville” have also been filmed here. The Grand Ole Opry returns to the celebrated auditorium each November through January, while The Rockettes perform at the current Opry House. Amy Grant and Vince Gill end their annual Christmas tour at The Ryman, while Andrew Peterson’s “Behold The Lamb of God” concert, held here each December, continues to be a highlight of the holiday season. Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, Jars of Clay, Chris Tomlin and NEEDTOBREATHE are among the Christian artists who have headlined concerts at the Ryman. The K-LOVE Fan Awards joins a long list of “firsts” that have taken place at this historic landmark. As you take part in this evening’s debut Christian music fan awards, soak in the significance of this place, this moment. Tonight, we’ll honor the people you deem “the best” in faith-based entertainment in a place that exists to highlight the brightest talent the music and entertainment industry has to offer. Fans, this evening, you’re making history. FOR MORE INFO, VISIT WWW.RYMAN.COM. 8 KLOVEFANAWARDS.COM

HOSTS

MEET TONIGHT’S

HOSTS PHIL ROBERTSON Patriarch of the family, Phil, is a living legend in Louisiana and is better known by his alias: the Duck Commander. He may not look like it, but he played first-string quarterback ahead of football star Terry Bradshaw at Louisiana Tech University in the ’60s. They were both drafted into the NFL, but Phil turned it down because it interfered with duck season. Instead, he stayed in Louisiana, married his high school sweetheart, Miss Kay, built a house down by the river and together they raised four sons. His love for the outdoors led him to create the Duck Commander® Duck Call in 1973, which has gone on to become the most trusted duck whistle ever conceived. Duck hunting is so important to Phil that he follows a strict routine of no showering, no shaving and no clothes washing of any kind during the ten-week season to ensure a bountiful haul.

@philrobertsondc

What’s the strangest thing you’ve found in your beard? DUCK COMMANDER: A mouse.

Have you ever eaten roadkill? What was it? DUCK COMMANDER: Deer—fresh kill. I only eat roadkill that’s still floppin’.

What’s the best part of working with your kin? The worst part? DUCK COMMANDER: Trust blood kin. Everybody is suspect. (Overall, nepotism rules with the Duckmen.)

KAY ROBERTSON Kay is the revered matriarch of the family. What she says goes. She was 16 when she married Phil, and since then she’s been keeping him and the boys from spending too much time in the woods, bringing them back to civilization each night with a home cooked meal. Kay believes her cooking talents are a gift which she must share, so she often ends up feeding all of the family and most of the neighborhood. Her most famous dishes are banana pudding, fried deer steak, crawfish pie and sticky frog legs. Kay’s favorite family member is Jesse, the family dog. But here’s the secret: every time he dies, Kay quickly gets a new puppy that looks just like the one that passed and even gives it the same name. As Kay puts it, “This way, you never have to grieve.”

@kayrobertsonae

What is your favorite way to prepare duck? MISS KAY: Grilled with jalapeño peppers and cream cheese in the center.

In the “Duck Dynasty” movie, who would play you? MISS KAY: Delta Burke—she was Suzanne Sugarbaker on “Designing Women.”

Which family member would be most likely to be elected President of the United States? MISS KAY: Phil, people listen to him. He quotes all the early presidents.

14 KLOVEFANAWARDS.COM

JASE ROBERTSON Jase is the second oldest of Phil and Miss Kay’s sons. While he knows he’s gotta earn his keep, Jase would much rather call the swamp his office. So, Jase’s job within the company is to fabricate the duck calls that have made Duck Commander famous. When pressed, Jase can churn out a thousand new calls in a flash, but he likes to take his time. Jase has more important things than work on his mind, namely, duck hunting. Jase’s motto is, “Only three things matter: God, then family, then ducks.” He’s married to Missy, whom he met in high school when they went on a fake date to make an ex-girlfriend of his jealous. They’ve been married for 22 years and have three children: Reed, Cole and Mia.

@jaseduckman

What would it take for you to shave off your beard? JASE: The only person who has the power is my lovely wife, and it would depend on the offer.

Where is your favorite spot to vacation? JASE: Any redneck beach.

What’s your favorite childhood memory? JASE: Watching my older brother and his three friends get a belt spanking even though they were ages 18-20.

MISSY ROBERTSON Missy Robertson is Jase’s wife. She had no idea what she was getting into when she found out Jase was a big hunter when they were dating. Now, 22 years and three kids later, she still has not left Jase and neither has his love for hunting. Missy says her duck-hunting husband “still makes my heart skip a beat.” She often helps her mother-inlaw, Miss Kay, and sister-in-law, Korie, with ideas to expand the Duck Commander women’s line. Like her husband and three brothers-in-law, Missy grew up in West Monroe, La. Her children even go to the same school she attended. Active in church activities, Missy is also involved in the Ch-Yo-Ca church youth camp, where she serves as crafts director. She cites faith and family as the most important aspects of her life.

What’s something that would surprise viewers of the show to know about you?

@missyduckwife

MISSY: I love to sing and teach singing to kids.

How big was the biggest duck you’ve caught? What did you do with it? MISSY: I’ve killed only three in my life, but I think Jase cleaned and cooked them.

If you weren’t in Louisiana, where would you want to live? MISSY: In heaven. I plan on going straight there from here!

“Duck Dynasty” is A&E’s most-watched series. The third season finale became the highest-rated telecast in A&E history. The show features a Louisiana bayou family—including our hosts, Phil, Kay, Jase and Missy Robertson—living the American dream as they operate a thriving business while staying true to their family values and lifestyle. The fourth season is slated to premiere later this year. www.duckdynasty.com • facebook.com/duckdynasty • @duckdynastyae

The band further made history as “I Can Only Imagine” surpassed 1 million digital downloads, marking the first song in Christian music to go Platinum in the digital domain. MercyMe’s widely-attended multi-artist “Rock & Worship Roadshow” plays to arenas each year, where the band shares the stage with some of Christian music’s biggest acts and promising new faces. The band’s “Cover Tune Grab Bag” videos have become a fan favorite, as the group has covered everything from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to their most popular “Grab Bag” offering yet—a cover of “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” which has garnered over 1.3 million views to date.

Batterson poses this question: What impossibly big dream is God calling you to draw a prayer circle around? Sharing inspiring stories from his own experiences as a circle maker, Batterson helps readers uncover their hearts’ deepest desires and God-given dreams in order to unleash them through the kind of audacious prayers that God delights in answering. SONG

OF THE YEAR

“REDEEMED,” BIG DADDY WEAVE Written by Mike Weaver and Benji Cowart “I believe I can honestly say that I have never doubted God’s love for me, but even still I somehow have rarely, if ever, been able to extend the same unconditional love, grace and acceptance to myself. There was a point when God finally broke through all of that. It was like He walked in the room and said, ‘Mike, why don’t you let me tell you what I think about you?’ That was the beginning of a new season in my life. I had always equated humility with selfdeprecation. Now I see that real humility is simply agreeing with whatever God says about my life. Not only does He accept me, but He’s calling me to see myself the way He does—redeemed.” —MIKE WEAVER, Big Daddy Weave • www.bigdaddyweave.com

“WHERE I BELONG,” BUILDING 429 Written by Jason Roy and Jason Ingram “‘Where do we belong? Why doesn’t anything in this world ever satisfy? The answer is simple...because this world is not our home. I shared the finished version with my worship team at church to make sure that point came across. They loved it. Sometimes the simplest messages are the most powerful ones.” —JASON ROY, Building 429 • www.building429.com

“10,000 REASONS,” MATT REDMAN Written by Matt Redman and Jonas Myrin “The song ‘10,000 Reasons’ is probably one of the fastest songs I’ve ever been a part of writing. I think, in all honesty, it may even [have been written in] under an hour... As soon as [my friend, Jonas] played me the melody, these lyrics started to flow. I was thinking about Psalm 103: ‘Bless the Lord, O My Soul. All that’s within me, bless His holy name.’ And I had my guitar and just started to sing out a verse. We’ve still got the initial recording, and you listen back...probably two-thirds of the verse lyric is what came out in that moment. Sometimes songs take so long to write, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing...but now and again, it’s so beautiful when something just drops in your lap, and you can feel His Spirit singing it out. I love this psalmist. I guess that’s what happened when he wrote that psalm. He’s just pouring out all these reasons… Isn’t that how the life of worship’s supposed to be? We’re meant to be so conscious of the reasons to praise God, and if you wake up one day, and you can’t think of a reason to thank Him or bring Him an offering of some kind, there’s something wrong with your spiritual outlook. Our lives are absolutely full of His glory and His goodness.” —MATT REDMAN • www.mattredman.com

“GOD’S NOT DEAD (LIKE A LION),” NEWSBOYS Written by Daniel Bashta “Last summer we were at a festival, and our manager was talking about songs we could record for our upcoming worship album. He handed me an unlabeled CD, which had 16 songs on it. There were no song titles or artist names listed. I spent the day listening through the album, and I had never heard Daniel Bashta’s song ‘Like A Lion’ before. It stood out to me as fresh and unique, and I loved his voice. I just loved the song. We all felt like we could record a cool version of the song by our band. It all started tying together the concept of what we wanted to say on this album. The campaign of what we wanted to bring out in the next season of the band was this bold statement in this day and age… The concept kept building from there. The song became the title track and lead single.” —JEFF FRANKENSTEIN, Newsboys • www.newsboys.com

“WHOM SHALL I FEAR,” CHRIS TOMLIN Written by Chris Tomlin, Ed Cash and Scott Cash “The record was finished, and this has happened for me a couple times now in recording, where I have some songs come last minute… You can work and work and work for a song, and then sometimes they just flow through you as a prayer. I am rising up right now, and whatever is coming against me, I’m going to sing this back against it, singing this in faith to God. I love that. I think people will find that, and in their most desperate times will turn to this song. There’s an interesting story in 2 Kings, Chapter 6, and it’s the story of the prophet Elisha, and his servant has come to him. There’s an army that’s coming down on Elisha, and Elisha looks at his servant and says, ‘Don’t worry… Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ Elisha prayed with him and said, ‘Lord, would you open up the eyes of my servant that he may see what’s really happening right now.’ It says the servant’s eyes were opened, and he looked and the mountains around the village were filled with these armies of God. Horses and chariots, he just saw them all around, and that’s what I’m trying to say in this song. When people hear this song, it’s my prayer, my hope that their eyes are opened and they know they are surrounded by the God of Angel Armies.” —CHRIS TOMLIN • www.christomlin.com

“ME WITHOUT YOU,” TOBYMAC Written by TobyMac, David Garcia and Christopher Stevens “‘Me With You’ is a concept I’ve had for a long time. I had a whole different chorus for it when I was working on the Tonight CD, but it didn’t end up being what I wanted it to be, so I just kind of let it go. And sometimes, those end up being some of my better songs. There’s purpose in holding back… Believe me, I want to get it done, but it’s sort of waiting for a peace. You feel good about it. You feel like, ‘Yeah, God breathed this one through me.’ The verse starts out talking about going through something hard. It’s raining on me. Raindrops are falling off the brim of my hat, and I’m fighting through this thing, trying to manhandle it. Suddenly, I realize how desperately I need God… I’ve written so many songs about how good it is to be walking with God, how beautiful it is and how He’s changing your life constantly and what you’re becoming, but very few times do we look back and think, Wow, where would I be without Him? I’d be this and I’d be that. I’d be a mess... I think it’s hard to appreciate who you may or may not be today if you’re not willing to look at what you may have been without this beautiful relationship with God.” —TOBYMAC • www.tobymac.com

“Every year that I’m at Lifest in Wisconsin, my friends and I camp out at the Grandstand on the day the Newsboys are playing so that we’re in the front row for their concert. One year, as they were performing, Michael put the microphone to my mouth twice to sing some of their lyrics. I’m tone deaf, but for those brief seconds I rocked it out and didn’t care what people thought.” —Emily K.

“I am a crazy huge fan of this band, and the concert in Cicero, NY on the 28th was absolutely amazing. I sang just about every song that came on, and each band was truly inspiring and amazing. It made my life to have you guys sign my stuff. :)” —Tawny Graves
