Jennifer

Happy New Year and hope you all had a wonderful festive Christmas! I love the feeling of a fresh new year to renew my client’s interior spaces.

I have been researching the latest forecast for 2023 interiors and here are my 10 favourite interiors trends. Please do contact Jennifer, owner of Jennifer Suzanne Interiors if you are looking for a creative professional interior designer to design your interior spaces.

1. U NI q UENESS AND EC l ECTIC DESIGN

Entering into 2023 we’re making room for pieces that are unique, meaningful and stand out. As a designer I spend time with my clients getting know their personality and lifestyle. I prefer to source pieces and design layouts that make their space feel unique. Whether that’s a really distinctive chair, coffee table or statement floor lamp, we’re making room for pieces that stand out by doing so or zoning rooms that makes for a less traditional layout.

2. N ATURE INSPIRED o RGANIC m ATERIA l S

Natural elements like marble, rattan, wicker, and cane will continue to have a strong presence in design next year. Nature has a calming effect and that is so important that our homes feel calm in a chaotic world. Organic materials such as wood and colours inspired by nature are popular furniture choices in 2023.

One of my favourite cost effective styling tips to create an organic look is as simple as snipping branches or stems from your outside surroundings and adding them to earth tone vases. Think over size when cutting to create a sense of drama in your displays.

3. S TATE m ENT ov ERSI z E l A m PS AND WA ll l IGHTS

Although recessed lighting is certainly not going anywhere, statement lamps and wall lights even just as decorative pieces more so than for lighting will be incorporated into spaces. Also oversize scale to create interest and a sense of fun, Brass wall lights will continue to be a popular metallic tone over the next year.

4. PAINTING CEI l INGS

Many use walls as an extension of their warm and cozy space—but it doesn’t have to end there, refer to the ceiling as the 5th wall, and depending on the space and architecture of a room, painting the ceiling can create a sense of cohesiveness.

5. vINTAGE FURNITURE

If you love to collect second hand pieces then 2023 is your year! Vintage inspired furniture is expected to make a come back. Vintage is the perfect way to add a unique, classic and timeless feel to your home. Websites including Facebook market place are excellent to source your second hand finds and local antique stores. A great way to be eco friendly and find a bargain piece!

6. Colo URFU l, PATTERN FABRICS

As 2023 is the year of colour and pattern, as a designer I am noticing clients are willing to experiment with colour, pattern and unique eye catching pieces that become the focal point of the room. Pattern on fabric will be en vogue in 2023 with stripes, block prints and vintage inspired pattern. I have an amazing range of fabric suppliers that I can source the most beautiful fabrics so if you are looking to find that unique fabric to add interest to your upholstery please do get in touch. I designed a living room with these beautiful upholstery fabrics for armchair, footstool and cushions inspired by classic English countryside prints.

7. C URTAINS AND CUSHI o N TRI mm INGS

2023 will be the year of trims in fashion, I have been adding trims into my curtain, pelmets, cushions and upholstery pieces and have plans to continue in 2023 with the super contemporary approach to tassels, trims, piping edges. There are hundreds of designs and colours to elevate your interior spaces.

8. WA ll PAPER

For 2023 wallpaper is still as popular and can direct the mood of the room, my clients are open to more colour and bolder statement wallpapers for 2023, murals, stripes, botanical prints, large-scale geometrics’ textured neutrals and abstract modern patterns. I am lucky to see so many fantastic wallpaper suppliers. I would love to source your perfect wallpaper print for 2023, please do get in touch, I would love to work on your wallpaper project.

9 Our Home

9. C UR v ED FURNITURE

To create a softness in a room and I am noticing more curves on furniture design such as dining chairs, sofas, armchairs, curved coffee tables, desks.

Curved interiors are proven to give off a relaxing and calming feel due to the rounded organic appearance.

10. Colo UR TRENDS

E ARTH To NES AND WAR m NEUTRA l S

The consensus is that grey is out and warm earthy tones and warm neutrals will continue to dominate in 2023. Muted earth shades of terracotta, green, yellow and plum. I think we will still see a lot of water tones like greens and blues. Warm neutrals will play a big part to warmer beige's and light taupe tan in 2023 for a softer approach.

R ICH, DAR k Colo URS

Experimenting with bold, dark colours such as chocolate brown, dark jade, ochre, charcoal these colours have a wonderful depth to them and you can't get this from light neutrals.

From painted kitchen units, wardrobe doors to feature walls, painted ceilings to and all over room painted in dark colours are a real treat for the eyes.

P IN k AND R o SE

Pink by nature is a colour that promotes tranquillity and healing, it is no wonder that homeowners are now more receptive than ever to this rosy hue. With paint companies like Farrow and Ball, Benjamin Moore, all choosing a pink-infused hue as their colour of the year it seems that 2023 is set to be quite the blushing year.

If you’re inspired by my 2023 interior trends, I’ll be sharing my inspiration, paint colours, wallpaper, lighting, furniture, fabrics and accessories on my social media so please follow me on Instagram page @ jennifersuzanneinteriors

ViNtage repairs

Established for nearly 100 years Chapmans really understand the word vintage!

If you want to preserve the magic, sounds and memories of your vintage product Chapmans can help. Sometimes the sentimental memories need to come back or maybe you just want to pass it down to future generations. You may be a collector of Vintage equipment which is becoming increasingly valuable and incredibly collectable.

Vintage items were built to last and often produce a lovely warm and mellow sound, once restored they will bring many more years of enjoyment. Robert Chapman says “We really enjoy restoring vintage items and electronic equipment preserving high quality items from oblivion.”

All Chapmans vintage repairs are carried out by experienced engineers and are guaranteed for three months. All work is quoted for before proceeding and the high quality service that Chapmans offer is just one of the reasons they have been around for nearly 100 years.

Chapmans themselves were founded in 1925 by Ewart Chapman, the father of the present Managing director, Robert Chapman. In the early days it was mainly concerned with wiring for factories and some domestic customers. Electricity was a brand new technology and

most houses still relied on coal for heating and gas for lighting. The wiring side of the business continued to grow and in the 1930’s Mr Chapman opened his first shop which mainly sold peripherals to the wiring activities, such as bulbs, fuses and plugs. It also started selling radios and provided a charging facility for the accumulators that most people used to run their radios. Items such as electric irons, hair dryers, kettles and toasters were also offered for sale but they were not common in most homes. Although Chapmans have always kept at the forefront of technology they have not lost their love of the products that were a key part of their early history.

Chapmans team of in house engineers can help with Hi-Fi, Record players, decks and Radiograms. Plus Separates, Cassette tape and reel to reel recorders. Chapmans source parts from Germany, the Far East and all over the world leaving no stone unturned in their quest to restore your products although this can result in slightly longer repair times the wait is always worthwhile. Chapmans also have their own car park at the rear of their Cradley Heath showroom making access really easy, they can even collect and deliver back your vintage treasures if that is required. Whilst sometimes it is advisable to replace old or faulty products with Chapmans help there are times when a vintage repair is by far the best way to go.

MeNopausal skiN

- ladies editioN

It’s like my skin changed for the worst over night!

I feel like I have aged 10 years in a couple of months!

These are just two sentences we hear all too often in clinic.

Most ladies do not realise the effects menopause will have on their skin, so this article aims to pre-warn you and give you some tools to fight back. One sure fire way to fight back is to work with a skin specialist, who can create an effective treatment plan that will help you with the first stages of peri menopause or full-blown menopausal skin signs.

WHEN DOES MENOPAUSE START?

Menopause “officially” starts one year after your last period, but the changes start way beforehand and can bring changes to your skin and hair that gradually sneak in without you really noticing.

WHAT WILL I NOTICE?

Peri menopause can begin for some women in their late 30s, but for most women ages 40 to 44 is the average age. It is marked by changes in menstrual flow and in the length of the cycle. There may be sudden surges in estragon as hormone levels plummet, your skin can become dry, sensitive with vascular redness often an early sign of peri menopause. Also, you may notice more hair growing on your face and the hair on your head, becoming thinner.

Once you hit your full menopause many ladies notice their complexion will have lost its glow, you can lose volume and your hydration levels can drop rapidly regardless of how much

Reflect water you drink! Your skin can feel coarse, and lines and wrinkles feel dominant when you look in the mirror.

Ex TREME CASES

Menopausal ladies can often develop adult on set acne, or their skin can become excessively oily with sebum levels going haywire, some develop areas of vascular redness, usually on their cheeks. While others become severely surface dry. There are unfortunately some women who develop a condition called Rosacea which is often all of the above together! Rosacea can often be distressing and extremely sore. I have on many occasions worked with women whose skin has been so uncomfortable they cannot even cleanse properly, let alone add serums or make up.

Some ladies develop masses of tiny skin tags on their necks or under their arms and others developing post inflammatory pigmentation issues due to hormonal changes and the suns UV rays! The list is endless, and its really quite shocking what women have to deal with and I am only discussing the skin changes!

The good news is that you can reduce these effects with good skincare. The fightback starts here, and it is doable.

OUR AESTHETICIANS RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING:

Up your hydration levels and drink water with added electrolytes to get hydrated on a cellular level.

• Use SPF 50 sunscreen every day when your outdoors. All season’s rain or shine!

• Consider adjusting your diet, we all know fruit & vegetables are the key and now more than ever.

Our Health

Consider taking a hair, skin and nails supplement specifically developed for menopause.

• Consider changing your skincare products and your skincare routine!

• Considering collagen shots to support and strengthen your skin.

• Avoid moisturisers and perfumed skin products on your face as they may start to irritate your skin due to hormonal changes and sensitivity.

• Book time for you and your skin with a stress and chemical free scalp and facial deep cleanse & massage. Zone out and de stress you and your skin.

• Take great care and consideration with your make up choices because make up can be very drying and exacerbate the condition.

• Book a free skin consultation with a

reputable skin clinic for a skin cancer screening and menopause education briefing, it will be your guiding light.

There are specific products that can support you through this period and there are aesthetics facial treatments designed to give you back your glowing skin.

Speak to an Aesthetician about other treatment options, such as laser hair removal for facial hair, cryo or plasma treatments for skin tags removal and scalp stimulation therapy to reduce hair loss and stimulation new growth.

Whatever your concern it can be tackled with time and understanding so don’t despair, pick up the phone and book that consultation.

Next edition back to the A to Z of skin health with Keratosis Pilaris, Melasma and Milia.

is it tiMe for NeW ears for NeW years?

Christmas has come and gone and it may have been harder to enjoy the family fun, if you couldn’t join in due to not being able to hear very well. Hearing loss is often realised when there is extra noise, hustle and bustle and parties – sounds you can’t turn up and down.

If this was you or a loved one, why not have those ears checked for FREE by our professional hearing care team and let us help you hear those all-important sounds of life in 2023?

It may be as simple as having your ears unblocked or trying a new hearing solution you didn’t know about. Better hearing should be and can be simple.

Did you know ears not only help you hear, but also aid balance?

Older adults, with hearing loss, are 3 times more likely to experience falls than those with good hearing. Falls can have an impact on our physical and mental health with pain, distress, and the loss of both confidence and independence occurring as a result.

Studies have shown that there is an association between age-related hearing loss and the increased risk of mobility-related problems including walking difficulties, slower gait speed, loss of balance, and falls. We know there are other factors that could increase the chance of a fall but improving someone’s hearing can really help reduce the risk.

At any of our ‘Hear in’ clinics we can help by offering both ear wax removal and FREE hearing assessments where you will be given the best possible independent advice without obligation.

As a local, family business we pride ourselves on our excellent, professional service and our clinic facilities are second to none. All hearing aid solutions come with a 60-day money back guarantee and also interest free finance available for up to 12 months*. You really do have nothing to lose by trying, and we are with you every step of the way. *subject to credit check

We are lucky to be able to make a difference to peoples listening lives every single day. It’s what we love, it’s what we do!

MeNtal ill health is Not just for the jaNuary Blues

As a counsellor, I see a pattern in the problems clients present to me, throughout the year, that could almost be looked at as being seasonal.

It’s not quite as black and white as people suffering from depression in the winter months, anxiety in the spring, couples’ issues in the summer and teenager problems in the autumn, but there does appear to be trends associated with seasons.

For example, the new school year in September and the following few months, particularly for 14 to 18 year olds, seems to bring a larger concentration of stress and anxiety related conditions.

Christmas particularly and just after, family and relationship concerns.

April, and we see a trend forming around depression illnesses (this also coincides with the highest numbers in a month, for suicide)*

Seeing a counsellor doesn't hold the stigma it used to, thankfully. When I was growing up, if someone saw a counsellor, it was a sign of weakness, particularly if you were a man and while there is still a stigma attached to seeking mental health help, it’s much less that it was.

Thankfully, we have seen a change in that way of thinking as generations come and go, meaning that for some, in fact, probably for most, counselling is now seen as a form of selfdevelopment, and in many social settings, it's encouraged. As our next generation hits the

workforce, even more will see counselling as a social norm.

That being said, the importance of counselling should not ever be underestimated. While it’s becoming increasingly socially acceptable to seek personal help that shouldn’t lessen the impact of counselling or make conditions that counselling or therapy treat, any less important.

The differing array of symptoms and conditions require different methods of counselling. These methods used are more down to the individual needs of the patient rather than the condition they present with. Some patients might respond better to CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) others, SFT (Solution Focused Therapy) or Humanistic Counselling.

Shaping Up for yoUr Wedding

Every bride wants to look her best on her wedding day and with all the Christmas goodies now out of the way it is time to turn your attention to fitting into the dream dress and looking great on your big day. However, with all the wedding planning madness, sometimes it’s tough to stick to the diet or exercise regime as closely as you might want to. Snacks or convenience meals are easy to fall back on when you are desperately trying to address your list of things to do and trucking off to the gym may be pushed down the list of weekly must-dos when you’re grabbing every spare second to do wedding “stuff”.

There are a few ways in which you can look your best in your wedding dress without hitting the gym every day or driving yourself crazy with diet fads. It’s all about choosing a dress that suits your shape and hides your less

favourite bits!

You should know by now what body shape you are and what style of dress suits you. If you are lucky enough to have the clothes horse figure then you can pretty much wear anything you desire. However, you may want to highlight some of your best bits and you may have bits of you which you rather weren’t emphasised. It’s all about choosing a style that accentuates your assets and helps to tone down the less favourable areas.

G ET A Goo D S UPP o RT SySTE m

Before we get on to what style suits what body type it’s important to address the undergarments. The key to a sleek silhouette is wearing appropriate underwear that fits well and most importantly remains hidden.

38

To avoid the dreaded bra bulge and create the right amount of cleavage get a professional bra fitting to be sure you’re wearing the right size. Take a bra along to your fitting so that you can see if it will suit the shape of your gown and remain unseen.

Invest in some good shape-wear such as Spanx which are lightweight, breathable and available is many styles. They are also available in different materials, so you can find garments that won’t cling to your gown’s fabric but will still nip and tuck you in all the right places. Again take it along to the fitting to match it up with dress.

Fl ATTER yo UR F IGURE

If you would rather hide your tummy, hips and legs then go for an empire waistline in a soft, light, whimsical fabric such a silk crepe. This style of dress flows out from beneath the bust line and therefore falls softly over the hips in a gentle fashion hiding any bumps that you might have underneath. It is especially suited to a more ample bosom however it can be particularly effective for accentuating smaller breasts if the fabric is gathered over the bust and pulled tidily underneath with the skirt falling away in ripples.

If you do want to hide your hips and thighs but want to show off your waist and bust then go for a full skirted style with a fitted top half. Choose a bodice that fits snugly showing off your bust and waist. A full skirt, especially if the top few layers are in a light almost seethrough fabric such as tulle or netting, make your waist appear even smaller (and therefore your bust bigger) but springs lightly away from the bodice totally camouflaging everything from the waist down.

If you want to suck it all in, a corseted ball gown style is the best option to show off your bust and add some curves to your waistline. Look for a corset that finishes below the waist line almost onto your hips. This way you can elongate the line from bust to hip giving

yourself more room to create the curve of the waistline. If you are small busted the corset can tend to squash your shape and leave you looking somewhat deflated. Look for a dress where the corset structure starts just underneath the bust and perhaps has some soft gathered or pleated fabric over the bosom to add depth and fullness. This way you get that nipped in waist but keep your bust looking fuller, padded out by the gathering and pleating that tucks neatly into the top of the corset starting directly underneath the bust.

If you are more straight up and down then you might want to try and create some curves. Try a fishtail or mermaid shape. These dresses have a sculpted bodice and a skirt that flares out from the mid-thigh or even the knee. This shape will hug your figure nicely in all the right areas creating dips and curves that follow the shape of your bust, waist and hips. If you are lacking in the waist department look for a dress that remains fitted right down the knee. This draws the line of the dress in and down giving you a longer line and creates a curve at the waistline. Another tip to create a curvaceous waist is to choose a dress with a V shape bodice preferable both at the neck and waist. If you really don’t feel that a waist can be achieved and you have the height for it try a column dress in a silky, fluid fabric such as Charmeuse. This style is elegant and flattering with the fabric falling from the bust and alludes to curves underneath despite there not being any.

If you think your legs are a good asset then have them on show. A ballerina length skirt teamed with a spectacular pair of heels shows off the ankle and calf beautifully and hints as to what lies beneath the soft folds or your skirt.

If you are still unsure a good all-rounder for every body type is the A-line silhouette which fits at the bust and waist with a skirt that gently flares out from the hips.

30 faBulous years at roystoN Blythe

When the world of hairdressing is consistently changing, it a breath of fresh air to visit a salon and see the same faces, people that get to know you, your families and who build close relationships. The longstanding team at Royston`s have shared their client`s lives, including the highs, the lows and not only are their hairdressers but also their friends.

Royston Blythe started with a team of three 32 years ago, but over the years they have grown a team of loyal and dedicated colleagues that have been instrumental in the success of the business.

One very special team member is Rita Mason. Celebrating 30 years is the fabulous Rita, the

Jackie Onassis of the salon. Infamous for her chic style, RB`s first Receptionist in 1992 ran this incredibly busy salon single handed and is mother to the team. She knows everyone in Wolverhampton, with her flair and elegance, clients regularly seek her fashion advise. She is the fountain of all knowledge (including home interiors), life issues and finds positivity in every situation.

At 80 this year, would you believe it! She is the essence of the salon and is still at the helm on the busiest days to welcome all and keep an eye on the smooth running of the salon.

To celebrate this milestone, Nick & Royston invited Rita, her gorgeous daughters, close friends and the team to Sunday lunch and party afterwards. Nick`s heartfelt words did ensure there was not a dry eye in the house but once the singer started, Rita was first up on the dance floor and was the last one standing!

We asked Rita, `What is your favourite memory from the last 30 years? `

` I thank my best friend Jackie for introducing me to Nick & Royston, she said `you will love working with these boys`, and I have never looked back. We have shared both the sad times and the good, but the lad’s generosity and kindness has always been at the heart of everything. It has never felt like work with lovely clients to chat to, I laugh every day and I hope the fun never ends`.

Nick & Royston replied:

`Rita is incredibly special to us. She has defended and supported us throughout the years and is a true and loyal friend. We share so many memories, funny ones, naughty ones and the characters we still miss over the years. We just want her to carry on forever! Our only regret was our lovely friend Jackie Taylor couldn`t be with us today (you were

missed) to celebrate our Rita but we send her all our love`.

After visiting the salon, I now appreciate why Royston Blythe is described as a family. It is a unique salon, Ladies, whatever your age, who ever you are, you will always be made to feel welcome and leave feeling fabulous.

tetteNhall College

Tettenhall College is a wonderful day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 2 –18 years of age. Whilst 80% of our pupils are British, with many coming from the local area, we are also home to around 100 boarders, who come from 23 different countries. We allow our pupils to gain a global perspective, whilst enjoying the beautiful campus environment full of outstanding facilities and nestled in our protected woodland.

Tettenhall College is a school that genuinely and successfully combines academic achievement and personal growth, with the very best delivery of pastoral care and an emphasis on kindness, gratitude and good manners. This is what the very best schools do. They allow children to be happy, confident and engaged individuals who are nurtured to love learning, challenge and success.

The TC Preparatory Pathways Programme is tailor made to ensure children from the age of 2 upwards progress through a structured and comprehensive learning journey. This continues through the Senior School and into Sixth Form where their own Pathways Programme delivers outstanding levels of success. Each year we delight in seeing our pupils progress to some of the finest universities in the UK and also internationally, leading to professional and successful careers in a wide range of fields.

This educational philosophy underpins the approach to scholarship at Tettenhall College. To be a scholar is a privilege, a reward, and a responsibility. Pupils who enter the College at either Year 7, Year 9 or Year 12 are given the opportunity to be assessed for scholarship, and those demonstrating the highest levels of attainment and potential are made awards. All scholars are required to complete tasks each term, to ensure their commitment to ongoing learning and personal growth. However, the fundamental difference at Tettenhall College is that every pupil in the Senior School and Sixth Form has a scholars’ handbook. Every pupil is actively encouraged to demonstrate scholarship in all areas of the curriculum, allowing inclusive learning to lead to the very highest outcomes.

NeW year heralds NeW extraCurriCular opportuNities

After the excitement of the Christmas festivities we all need something to look forward to in the New Year. Luckily students at Wolverhampton Grammar School have the ideal pick-me-up waiting for them. WGS proudly offers the most varied and plentiful selection of extra-curricular clubs and activities of all the schools in the area.

Students can indulge and explore a huge number of interests, ranging from calligraphy and cooking to photography, Pokémon Go, BBC Young Reporter and Big Band. Many of these opportunities, including Medics Society, student newspaper and the Green Power project, are run by Sixth Formers; providing extra opportunities for leadership, mentoring and enterprise.

What can WGS students look forward to in 2023? With extra-curricular trips firmly back in the calendar there is plenty to tempt those seeking adventure! Perhaps a sports and cultural tour to South Africa? A French trip to Château du Broutel in Northern France, a visit to the First World War battlefield sites at Ypres and the Somme, or even a chance to volunteer at a school in Morocco?

This academic year has already seen three such successful international trips. The spectacular view of the Northern Lights on the Land of Science tour to Iceland will surely be an experience difficult to surpass! This much anticipated trip offered the chance to see some of the natural phenomena studied

across all year groups in Science subjects.

The Sports department were busy with two European tours. Boys and girls took part in a Portugal Football development Tour which provided a golden opportunity to train in world class facilities, interact with elite players and learn from the highly qualified coaches.

Further north, 29 Year 8 and 9 girls travelled to Valkenburg in the Netherlands for a Hockey and Netball tour. They enjoyed coaching masterclasses and games against local sides, including playing at the incredible facilities of the Horst Hockey Club. On both tours there was time to appreciate local culture.

This abundance of extra-curricular opportunities is undoubtedly one of the huge benefits of choosing to study at Wolverhampton Grammar School. Why not visit to find out more? Email: admissions@ wgs-sch.net.

After the wettest November for many a year we have been grateful that our First xV pitch is all weather and that has meant that none of our sides have lost any fixtures whereas other local clubs have suffered.

November started with our usual Bonfire and Fireworks night on Friday 4th. Customarily we build the bonfire on the Thursday to be lit on the Friday evening. This year, however, we had an unwelcome visit from an arsonist just past midnight on the Friday morning followed by wake up phone calls and a visit from the Fire Brigade. Plan B accelerated into action from early morning by when all the local radio and social media contacts had started to generate offers of wood and pallets from as far afield as Cheltenham, Fernhill Heath, Minworth and Sutton Coldfield. Could we collect ? I have got one pallet ! We have got two lorry loads. The phone never stopped nor did the flood of volunteer bonfire builders and van drivers who were despatched around the locality to collect whatever was available. Of note were Fieldings Auctioneers and The Cornish Pasty Man whose vehicles and willing drivers

continued a constant relay back and forth. We are eternally grateful to each and everyone for rescuing our Bonfire and Fireworks night. The community spirit was heart warming as was the bonfire which ended up twice the size of the original as the wood kept coming. Suffice to say that the night went ahead without any further mishaps.

On the field neither the First xV nor The Lions have started off well in their leagues and are both concerned about the prospect of relegation. Late in November our local derby against Bournville resulted in a very tight game when the visitors just managed to overcome us 34-29.There is plenty of work to do between now and April.

The First xV are now in National Two West and have been travelling to new venues down the M5. Redruth, Exeter University and two Bristol sides, Clifton and Old Redcliffians. In the New Year they will be playing against three more new sides, Newport (Salop), Barnstaple and Weston-Super- Mare Hornets.

Ride the Reservoir, the popular cycling challenge from The Hospice Charity Partnership, is returning 23Rd April 2023.

The Hospice Charity Partnership, formed by the merger of Birmingham St Mary's Hospice and John Taylor Hospice, is calling on cyclists to Ride the Reservoir to raise much-needed funds to care for people with life-limiting illnesses across Birmingham and Sandwell. Last year, over 300 riders took part in the sportive, raising an incredible £20,000.

This year, the charity is hoping to double that and raise over £40,000 of vital funds with your help. Whether you’re new to cycling, a seasoned pro or somewhere in between, there’s a route for everyone. Choose from three scenic routes – 25km, 75km or 100km. The sponsorship money you raise will support the charity to continue to support the people

who need them most at the most difficult of times.

Rebecca Richards, Senior Events Manager at The Hospice Charity Partnership, said: “Ride the Reservoir is always a popular event and a fantastic way to kick-start the cycling season. Not only is the sportive highly regarded by the cycling community, it also raises vital funds to help people across Birmingham to live well with their illness, right up to the very end of life and support their loved ones.”

Ride the Reservoir takes place on Sunday 23rd April, starting at Newman University, Bartley Green. Registration costs £10 - £35 and includes free food and drinks, a certificate and a gift.

Turn the oven on to 180oC. Mix the turmeric with about 50ml of olive oil and rub all over the chicken, season with sea salt and gently toast 1 teaspoon of each of the whole spices for a few minutes in a dry frying pan, allow to cool and roughly crush with the pestle and mortar or pour into mill and give it a twist all over the chicken skin. Place the parsley stalks inside the cavity of the chicken with the whole garlic bulb and a few slices of lemon.

Once the chicken is cooked remove from the tray onto a board, place a piece of foil over it and rest for 20 minutes. Take the garlic out and squeeze the soft garlic puree into the meat juices. If needed use water to deglaze the tray and pour into a pan. Simmer the juices adding a few nobs of butter to emulsify and create the sauce.

Slice the mushrooms and gently cook in a nob of butter with a little water and add in chopped parsley leaves and kale leaves. I cut off the very end of the stalk keeping most of it whole but you can remove it all if you prefer. Once the kale has cooked for about 30 seconds plate the kale and mushrooms up carve the chicken breast off the carcass and serve with the sauce. Chop up some parsley to garnish if you like. You can use white wine instead of water in the mushrooms and kale if you like a bit of a boozy flavour. Simmer the left over chicken to make a soup.

Serve with a green bean and pesto salad. Add potatoes if you’re not watching your carbs.

At the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula, where Africa meets Europe, lies the captivating peninsular of Gibraltar. Magnificent scenery, rich architecture and enchanting wildlife capture the essence of the Mediterranean. Temperatures can creep above 30 centigrade in summer and with an average of 300 days sunshine a year Gibraltar’s subtropical North African sun and fascinating history ensures that the number of visitors continues to increase each year.

Gibraltar remains a strategically important military and naval base and has been ruled by many since early Arab occupation. Spanish forces governed from the beginning of the fourteenth century until 1333 when the Moors retained control. In 1462 the peninsula was recaptured by Spain until Admiral George Rooke took control in 1704. Gibraltar has continued to play a prominent role in times of conflict. Spanish and French forces besieged the peninsular during the American War of Independence and it is also recorded that Admiral Nelson’s fleet was based in Gibraltar. Following the victory of Trafalgar in 1805, his body, preserved in a barrel of rum, was brought to Gibraltar. And of course it is widely known that Gibraltar played a pivotal role during the Second World War.

Today, Gibraltar offers visitors a tantalising glimpse into this intriguing history and there is the opportunity to witness the splendour of ceremonial events including the Changing of the Guard and the Ceremony of the Keys,

which are still performed with precision as they were in past centuries.

Keen to know more of the struggles for power, I visited the imposing Moorish Castle, admired the beautiful Spanish architecture at the Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned and wandered around the tranquil gardens surrounding the Trafalgar Cemetery. Although Gibraltar is a small peninsular there is plenty to see and do. For those of us who love to shop, Gibraltar is a VAT free zone and Main Street, which runs the length of the town centre, is crammed with shops enticing the most reluctant!

For those drawn to strenuous activities options include sailing, diving and fishing. Bird watching is another popular pastime and of course a trip to visit the Barbary Apes, at the top of ‘the rock’ cannot be missed. The Barbary Apes are the only wild primates in Europe and legend has it that if the apes leave then Gibraltar will cease to be British. This does not cause concern, as it is quite clear that they are very well looked after!

Gibraltar holds many surprises for visitors; there are four spacious sandy beaches to choose from. Eastern Beach, Sandy Beach, Western Beach and the charming picturesque and sedate Catalan Bay (which was settled by Genoese fishermen in the 18th century) are highly recommended. For those of us who love to sail, Gibraltar’s marine life is very impressive. You may well encounter turtles, dolphins

and even the Blue Whale, which is known to migrate to the area. For bird watchers, a visit to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve is a real treat. The Rock is a staging post for an extensive array of species including eagles, vultures and buzzards and residents include the Blue Rock Thrush, Peregrine Falcon and the Barbary Partridge.

Choosing a place to stay is always a dilemma but I was most fortunate to secure a gorgeous suite at the Rock Hotel. The hotel, (recipient of four of the highly regarded AA stars), was built by the Marquis of Bute in 1932 and wellknown guests include Winston Churchill. The hotel presents a rich colonial style décor and provides an excellent level of comfort and service, which makes for a perfect retreat. The views across the Bay of Gibraltar, the Spanish mainland and the Rif Mountains of Morocco are quite simply breathtaking. The hotel also holds two RAC dining awards as well as the RAC White Ribbon. The restaurant is of course very popular with locals and visitors

alike and offers an extensive menu with British, Iberian and Moorish dishes served in relaxed surroundings. After indulging in one too many courses, I took a dip in the open-air seawater pool, which is in a secluded spot within a lush tranquil garden. This activity was followed by a few cocktails and then a long leisurely snooze! Visit Gibraltar, and experience a little piece of England on the Mediterranean.

VolVo xC40 reCharge pro

The Volvo xC40 has been around for a little time but now a makeover has been introduced to the external and internal appearance, but the major feature of the new xC40 is it has now become a fully electric SUV, designed to compete with plethora of other SUVs in the pure electric market, writes Bob Hickman.

Externally it is difficult to know that the new xC40 is pure electric, the external dimensions look very similar to the conventional petrol and diesel xC40 with the exception of the front grille has now been effectively closed off because there is no need for air to run through the radiator or be part of the cooling.

The xC40 has a lovely wonderful high seating position with generous amounts of legroom, both front and in the rear, and this high seating position, gives wonderful panoramic views from the vehicle. In addition, the carrying capacity is excellent with a huge boot. The xC 40 has a plethora, of technical features so

much so I reckon it would take you a week to learn the full capacity of this vehicle. However, if you are a technophobe, it is without doubt the vehicle for you.

One of the features that you become acquainted with are the huge mapping displays, one is contained within the conventional binnacle, in front of the steering wheel, and the other Google maps on the huge infotainment system. The trim itself is beautiful, the dashboard is clear and the controls to use a cliche all fall nicely to hand, although you do need to work and check on what they all actually do.

The major difference however with this particular xC40 is the fact that it is a pure electric. The 231bhp electric motor is a willing companion, and performance is linear like in its 0-60 acceleration in just 7 seconds, a top speed of 99mph is claimed but it is not about top speed when you go electric.

62

Volvo suggest that the range could be up to 262 miles. The charging time is academic, it all hinges on what you actually choose to use it for. If you use a very fast charger 150-kilowatt charger then you could charge it to 80% in 32 minutes, the conventional 11 kilowatt in 11 hours, if you plug in to the mains at home then you are talking 24 hours plus to recharge fully from zero.

To drive the vehicle is in itself simplicity, enter the driving seat, there is no need to put a key in the ignition, it is all done electronically, choose drive or reverse whatever you want, a plethora of information comes up on the screen including an incredible overview camera that gives a full view of the car and surroundings and away you go. It really is as easy as that, no gears to worry about, select drive, point it and you are away.

The driving dynamics were of a vehicle that defied its large size, there was no discernible rock and roll-on A and B category roads, it

was a comfortable companion. One feature that was startling and needed to really check the handbook to find out how to modify it, was the re-charging under deceleration, take your foot off the accelerator and it was almost like applying the brakes such was the retardation effect that at times I was worried that someone behind me would run in to me, but I shouldn’t have worried because when the vehicle entered in to this mode, it actually put on the brake lights. It reminded me many years ago of when I drove coaches and they had a Telmar electronic braking system that worked on the prop shaft, the Volvo system enabled you, if you are very frugal on the accelerator pedal to put power back in to the battery.

If a pure electric is for you, the xC40 with the Volvo name that is known for safety and security, should be on your shopping list, be prepared to dig deeply, the xC40 Recharge range is available on the road from £45,750.

take CoNtrol iN a World that feels out of CoNtrol

It is no secret that we are in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis. The annual rate of inflation reached 11.1% in October 2022, a 41-year high and is affecting our affordability of goods and services. In reaction the Bank of England has been raising interest rates, leading to higher mortgage borrowing costs for households. We are all feeling the pinch!

Whilst we can’t control what is going on economically, we can take some practical steps to help us feel more in control of our personal finances.

My biggest tip is to intentionally budget. In its basic form, budgeting makes sure we are not spending more than is coming in and allows us to anticipate upcoming expenses.

Take time out to analyse your annual expenditure – your budget. Are there things that are not really needed? Subscriptions you don’t need or use any more? What changes can you make today to benefit your future? Changes that move you in the direction to where you will feel the most gratitude.

The time spent analysing and preparing your budget will make you feel ready to face

what’s coming and there will be less surprise. Let’s be honest, how many of us have over spent at Christmas because we failed to budget? Once you know your budget, you can see how much you can save. Save on a regular basis – make it become a healthy habit. The hardest thing to do when it comes to saving is to start.

My advice - set a savings plan up as soon as possible – even if it’s only £10 a month, then increase the amount when you can. Set the standing order up at the start of the month, you will know how much to allocate because you’ve done your budget! don’t wait until the end of the month, we all know what is likely to happen then – no money left = no savings.

Take these small steps to take control; feeling more secure and in control will in turn have positive effects on your overall mental and physical health and on your relationships.

No-fault

CollaBoratiVe diVorCe

2022 saw the much-needed introduction of no-fault divorce in England and Wales, which means that couples can now get divorced without blaming one another through a simplified online process. The change also applies to civil partnership dissolutions.

Previously, one spouse would have to blame the other by citing adultery, unreasonable behaviour or alternatively waiting up to 5 years of separation before the Court would allow the divorce to go ahead irrespective of whether they mutually decided to separate.

The introduction of “No Fault divorce” encourages couples to work together to agree practical and sensible solutions for the next chapters in their lives, rather than being forced to adopt positional argumentative approaches that can cause further problems and unnecessary emotional duress.

Whilst the no-fault divorce law makes it easier for couples to divorce, it must be remembered that the divorce itself is still only one part of the process. The financial arrangements, and sometimes child arrangements, can still be complex and can result in years of litigation unless managed well. Ultimately, the end goal is to ensure that everyone impacted by a change in family circumstances feels like they are being treated fairly at a difficult time.

Here at Talbots we have a number of innovative options and routes to help parties reach an agreement on their child and financial arrangements. One of these is a service called Collaborative Law which promotes a better ongoing relationship between couples as all communication takes place in a series of 4-way meetings between parties and their

collaborative lawyers.

At the outset, all parties and lawyers will sign a Participation Agreement that is a commitment that they will try to settle the divorce issues out of court. The parties will have the chance to outline their objectives and agree an agenda. In those meetings the parties are able to speak directly to each other in a safe, confidential environment leading to direct discussion rather than risking miscommunication or delayed responses through letters or e-mails. The lawyers for both parties will be working together to get a fair agreement for all involved. Finally, once the agreements have been reached, both spouses will sign documents to confirm their agreement and draft financial Orders can be filed with the Court to finalise matters.

Kelly Perks, a Senior Associate at Talbots Law and Pod Liaison Officer for the Black Country Collaborative Pod says, “the increase of divorce applications since the implementation of nofault divorce demonstrates that it was long overdue. This, combined with the collaborative process, is a step in the right direction to help couples reduce conflict and hostility in what is already a distressing period of their lives”.

Talbots Law has eight offices across the Midlands and has one of the largest family law departments in the region, with more than 30 specialist solicitors and support staff on hand to support families through changing circumstances, whether they’re positive or negative.
