Catch of the Day

Every summer, families across Florida dive into one of the state's most exciting traditions – lobstering! It's part treasure hunt, part swimming adventure and all fun.

During Regular Spiny Lobster Season August 6 through March 31, parents and kids can explore the first reef in just 10 to 20 feet of water – perfect for snorkeling together and spotting lobsters tucked into rocky hiding spots. For deeper reefs, scuba gear is a must, but it is possible to find some action closer to shore.

There's nothing quite like the thrill of spotting your first lobster, gently coaxing it into a net, and enjoying a dinner you helped catch later. It's hands-on, heartwarming and a great reminder that families often make their best memories far from screens – and sometimes, just beneath the surface. For more information and important regulations, visit https://myfwc.com/ fishing/saltwater/recreational/lobster/.

Savvy Shopper

Pencils, paper and glue sticks, oh my! If you have school-age children, there's a good chance you are looking at a lengthy list of school supplies you need to purchase before the first bell rings. Fortunately, there is some relief – sales tax relief, that is. This year, the Back to School Sales Tax Holiday in Florida is twice as long, spanning a full month from August 1-31. Shopping during this timeframe can render small to significant savings for your family by cutting out the sales tax. Qualifying items exempt from sales tax during the holiday include learning aids and jigsaw puzzles selling for $30 or less; most school supplies selling for $50 or less; clothing, footwear and accessories selling for $100 or less; and computers and accessories (when purchased for non-commercial and personal use) selling for $1,500 or less. For more information and a list of qualifying items, visit www.floridarevenue.com/ backtoschool.

10 WAYS TO MEET OTHER STAY-AT-HOME PARENTS

Being a stay-at-home parent is a full-time job – and then some. While it's incredibly rewarding, it can also feel isolating. The days can blend together in a blur of snacks, naps and Paw Patrol reruns. But carving out time to connect with other adults is not only healthy, it’s necessary. Here are 10 ways stay-at-home parents can get out of the house, meet people and recharge.

1 JOIN A LOCAL PARENTING GROUP

Parenting groups (online or in-person) can lead to real-life meetups, playdates and lasting friendships. Look for local chapters of national groups like MOMS Club or search Facebook and Meetup for parent groups in your area. Some even host weekly events or field trips.

2 TAKE A PARENT-AND-CHILD CLASS

Whether it’s music and movement, toddler yoga, or baby swim lessons, signing up for a class with your child is a great way to meet other parents in the same stage of life. Bonus:

3

FIND A LIBRARY STORYTIME

Public libraries often offer free story times or toddler programs that include music, crafts and social interaction. Regular attendance helps you and your child see familiar faces – and maybe turn them into friends.

4

VOLUNTEER FOR A CAUSE YOU CARE ABOUT

Many organizations welcome parents who want to help with occasional tasks, especially if you can bring your child along. From sorting donations to prepping materials for local schools or nonprofits, you can get involved and meet like-minded people.

5

SCHEDULE “YOU TIME” WITHOUT GUILT

It’s okay to ask your partner, a sitter, or a family member for a few hours off. Use that time to take a fitness class, go to a book club, or grab coffee with a friend. You’ll return refreshed – and likely in a better mood.

6

TRY A CO-WORKING PLAY CAFÉ

These hybrid spaces are popping up in many cities and are designed for parents who need adult conversation while kids play in a supervised area. It’s like a coffee shop with toys, and everyone there gets it.

SAY YES TO THE PARK CHAT

You know the one – when a fellow parent makes small talk at the playground. It might feel awkward, but it’s often the first step to a new connection. Keep some “parent business cards” in your diaper bag in case you find someone you

START A WALK-AND-TALK GROUP

Invite one or two other parents to stroll the neighborhood or a local trail with strollers in tow. It’s exercise, it’s conversation and it’s free. Even just 30 minutes can make a big difference in your day.

TAP INTO SCHOOL OR PRESCHOOL COMMUNITIES

If your child is in preschool or even part-time care, make an effort to chat with other parents at drop-off or pickup. Many schools also host events or parent nights. Go to them! They’re designed to build community.

GIVE YOURSELF CREDIT

Some days will be social. Some won’t. That’s okay. Simply getting out of the house, even for a quick walk or grocery run, can help shift your mindset. You’re doing a lot –and you’re not alone.

Being a stay-at-home parent doesn’t mean you have to stay home all the time. With a little effort and creativity, you can build a social life that supports you as much as you support your family.

After-school Adventures

HOW TO CHOOSE AN IDEAL AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

As summer winds down and school starts up, families face the important decision of where their child will go after school. Whether you’re balancing long work hours, wanting to extend learning, or keeping them engaged until dinner, choosing the right afterschool program can be challenging.

The good news is that with some research and honest reflection, you can find a program that fits both your schedule and your child’s unique needs. Know that there are benefits to after-school enrichment. Some parents wrestle with guilt about sending their child to an after-school program, especially if it feels like “extra” time away from home. But research suggests that high-quality after-school programs are

Another, published in The American Journal of Community Psychology, revealed that middle school students enrolled in after-school programs earned better math scores and displayed stronger developmental skills, including leadership and social confidence.

When starting your search, consider these valuable resources.

Begin with the school secretary, who can provide insights on programs that fit school schedules, transportation options, and reputable choices.

Your city’s recreation department is also a great option, as they often manage after-school centers and may offer bus service.

Lastly, tap into your parenting network. Fellow parents can give honest

environments need to be evaluated in the context of the individual child’s needs and within the family.”

What lights your child up? What wears them down? Does your child thrive on structured activities, or do they need space to recharge after social interactions?

For an introverted child, a five-day sports camp might be overwhelming, while an active child could find tutoring dull.

Pay attention to your child’s cues. If they come home from a trial day cranky or withdrawn, something isn’t right.

The best after-school programs utilize time meaningfully, rather than just filling it.

The three Cs: Connection, Capability and Continuity. When evaluating a program, some experts suggest considering three crucial qualities: connection, capability and continuity.

Connection: Are staff warm, genuinely interested in kids, and do they know them by name? Simple supervision isn’t enough.

Capability: Are staff trained in education and child development? Can they handle behavior with empathy instead of just enforcing rules?

Continuity: Kids thrive on predictability. Inquire about staff turnover, handling absences, and daily routines. Frequent changes in adults can hinder a child’s sense of security. Logistics matter, but shouldn’t be the deciding factor: Yes, a program has to fit your schedule. And, it should ideally be affordable, and not halfway across town. But don’t let convenience be the only deciding factor. Admittedly, transportation can be a deal-breaker. Some programs offer it. Some don’t. Ask detailed questions: What time is pickup? What happens if you’re late?

Some Questions to Ask Yourself When Choosing an After-School Program

1. Does it align with my child’s temperament and preferences?

2. Are staff warm, consistent and well-trained?

3. Is the environment safe and welcoming?

4. Is there a good balance between structure and choice?

5. Can I afford it and manage the logistics long-term?

6. Did my child enjoy the visit?

7. Do I feel at peace leaving them there?

Observe your child in a potential program: Ask to watch and bring them along to explore. Kids are intuitive and their reactions matter.

Town of Davie

Pay attention to staff interactions — are children engaged and having fun, or distracted by screens? Look for laughter, creativity, and movement versus chaos.

Red Flags: Be cautious of red flags that indicate a program may not be suitable for your child, such as high staff turnover, low adult-to-child ratios, lack of consistent structure, excessive screen use, or a culture prioritizing compliance over curiosity. If a program resists allowing observations or avoids questions about staffing and policies, that’s a significant warning sign.

Balance academics with play or enrichment: It’s tempting to view after-school time as a chance to boost academics. But most kids don’t need more worksheets. They need decompression, connection and creativity. The best programs strike a balance: maybe a little homework help, followed by art, nature walks and time to be a kid.

Trust the long game: No program is perfect. But when the fit is right, you’ll see it: the glitter, the grass stains, the proud art project clutched in small hands. The “guess what happened today!” stories that tumble out during the ride home.

Craving a Crunch?

Sink your teeth into crispy shrimp and corn cakes

While I try to steer clear of fried foods – try being the operative word – every now and then, a craving comes along that simply can’t be ignored. Enter these crispy, satisfying shrimp and corn cakes. Shrimp and corn are almost as iconic a duo as peanut butter and jelly – and with good reason. Their natural sweetness makes them a perfect match. Whip up a batch, pass around the remoulade, and get ready for the accolades to roll in.

Recipe and Photo by Susan Rosser

Shrimp and Corn Cakes with

Ingredients

FOR THE CAKES

1 pound raw shrimp, peeled and deveined

1 cup corn kernels (frozen or fresh, *see note)

1 cup creamed corn

3 cloves garlic, grated

1 large egg

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon paprika

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon kosher salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

½ cup yellow cornmeal

½ cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

2-3 scallions, finely chopped

¼ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

¼ cup neutral oil (for frying)

Preparation

MAKE THE REMOULADE

FOR THE REMOULADE

1 cup mayonnaise

2–3 tablespoons sweet relish

2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

½ teaspoon ground white pepper

2 teaspoons paprika

A few dashes hot sauce (such as Tabasco)

In a small bowl, mix together all the remoulade ingredients until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning or heat as desired. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

MAKE THE SHRIMP CAKES

• Place shrimp in a food processor and pulse a few times until coarsely chopped. (Or finely chop by hand.)

• Transfer shrimp to a large bowl. Add corn kernels, creamed corn, garlic, egg, thyme, paprika, cayenne, salt, pepper, cornmeal, flour, scallions, baking powder and parsley. Mix well to combine.

• Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

• Spoon about ¼ cup of the batter into the skillet for each fritter.

• Flatten slightly with the back of a spoon or spatula.

• Cook 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.

• Transfer the cooked fritters to a paper towel-lined plate or keep them warm in a 250°F oven while cooking the remaining batches.

• Serve hot with a generous dollop of the remoulade.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: To prevent fresh corn kernels from popping as you fry the fritters, be sure to cook the raw corn before adding it to the mixture. Still, some may pop, so use a splatter screen to protect yourself from random popping kernels.

American TKA Martial Arts

American TKA Martial Arts has been serving Davie and its surrounding communities for over 27 years. We have improved the lives of thousands of students over the years and have become the most trusted partners for parents.

We have the best student turnover rate than any other program in South Florida. Not because parents force their kids to be here but because students love our program. They love the confidence they gain, the sense of purpose they build and discipline they acquire within themselves.

Our approach to bringing out your child’s natural talents is unique. We implement strategies and incorporate all the principles of Martial Arts, (integrity, respect, perseverance, positive attitude, knowledge) to allow students to not only excel in our Dojo, but in their academic school and at home.

We created The Triangle Principle for this exact reason. This teaching strategy ensures that the student demonstrates all that is being implemented in our Dojo, at home, and school (3 points of the triangle). When our students understand that all 3 main focuses in their lives, (home, school & dojo) are vested in their success, that’s when the magic truly happens.

Our students demonstrate an incredible improvement in their academic grades within the 1st quarter of first enrollment. This is because we are committed to their success in all ways. Master Ginarte checks each report card every quarter and works with teachers and parents with an action plan to improve areas of opportunity. We work closely with the schools, teachers and administrators as needed to be on the same page for the student’s success.

As mentors and educators, we ensure all students understand the importance of living by our creed and it is instilled in everything we do. It would be an honor to serve you.

Choosing a school is never easy. Here are a few questions to ask yourself to see if your child is receiving the best education and attention for their success:

Is my child a number or a name? Here at GCA, we learn everyone’s name and, in turn, are able to assist students and families better because we know them personally.

Is the current school keeping the parent informed? GCA uses a variety of tools to keep our parents informed. Parents have daily access to grades and interim reports, homework is clearly posted, parent meetings as requested, and a twenty-fourhour response to all phone calls and emails is provided.

EMPTY on an TANK Parenting?

SIMPLE THINGS TO DO TO RECHARGE AND REFUEL

Modern parenting has become more than a full-time job. Today’s parents are not only working longer hours at paid employment, but they are also performing plenty of unpaid tasks like raising children, managing a household, and sometimes, caring for aging loved ones.

Parents who are feeling overwhelmed may not be surprised to know that recent studies have outlined an alarmingly high prevalence of unprecedented parental stress. But what is less discussed is how deeply this stress can affect an entire household. That’s why experts emphasize prioritizing realistic self-care, not just for the parents’ well-being, but for the health of the entire family.

Today’s parents are stretched to their limits. In an advisory by the former U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, it was noted that parental stress has reached unprecedented levels. The advisory found that 41 percent of parents said that they “can’t function most days due to stress,” and 48 percent said they feel “completely overwhelmed.”

As both a physician and a parent, Dr. Murthy called for greater systemic support for families, emphasizing: “Parents and caregivers are the backbone of our communities. But too many are stretched to their limits, and that has real consequences for families and for our country... Simply put, caregivers need care, too.”

Self-care Ideas

Music Retreat.

Grab some earbuds and pick one song that always lifts your mood. Listen while doing chores like folding laundry or doing dishes, guilt-free.

Walk It Out.

Even a short walk around the block can reset your nervous system and calm you down. Even better, listen to some music or your favorite podcast while walking.

Half an Hour Screen Break.

Take 30 minutes to set down your phone and replace scrolling with a cup of tea, stretching or just daydreaming.

Presence Journal.

Think of one thing you were present or grateful for today. Jot it down somewhere to uplift your spirits when you need it.

Create One Daily 5-Minute Ritual.

Think of a relaxing activity you enjoy that you can repeatedly slip into your day. It may be listening to birds, watching the sunset or reflecting.

Text a Friend.

Sometimes, there is no time for a full conversation, but you can still text someone and tell them you are thinking of them to maintain a small connection.

When parents suffer, kids do too. Research underscores the ripple effect of parental stress on children and families. A 2021 study found that children were twice as likely to suffer from behavioral, developmental, or mental health challenges when their primary caregiver was struggling.

A 2024 study mirrored these findings, noting that “parental stress predicts emotional/behavioral problems in school-age children.”

Unique pressures on parents. On top of being stretched thin, today’s parents face intense emotional pressures, ranging from fears about school safety and growing concerns over their children’s mental health to constant self-doubt fueled by unrealistic parenting standards. Dr. Mari Kurahashi notes, “There’s a lot of pressure and a feeling that, if we don’t do these things perfectly, we may be responsible for damaging our children or for our children not reaching their full potential.”

The pain of parental burnout. Experts warn that unchecked parental burnout can create deep feelings of shame, isolation and anxiety. Life coach Christine Anastasia explains the consequences this way: “Today’s working parents are more overwhelmed than ever, burdened with guilt and unrealistic expectations that they should have everything figured out.”

What parents can do. No parent wants their stress to affect their kids and make their household an unhealthy place. Experts say there are simple things you can do to help lighten the load. Here are some:

1

Lower the Bar

Many parents are stuck in cycles of perfectionism, amplified by social media’s picture-perfect portrayals. But Dr. Becky Kennedy, author of Good Inside: A Guide To Becoming The Parent You Want To Be, suggests shifting your focus. She notes, “Instead of focusing on perfection, turn your focus to growth. Growth shows us that what we are doing has an impact, that what we are doing matters.”

2

Delegate Small Stressors

Professor of psychology Moïra Mikolajczak says that although you can’t always delegate important tasks like family obligations and emotional labor, you can rethink small stressors that add up, sap your energy and frustrate you. She explains, “One has to remember there are many stressors tipping the scale.” She suggests delegating tasks that someone else can do and then modifying your expectations.

3

Audit Your Family’s Time and Energy

Extracurricular activities can be fun and enriching, but watch out that you don’t overextend so much that the activities feel like one more thing on your to-do list. Child psychiatrist Dr. Ellen Broughton explains, “We buy into this idea that our kids have to be involved in so much to be successful, but there’s no real data that this is true.”

4

Maintain A Support System

Social media might give the illusion of connection, but nothing beats personal interactions for mental health. Loneliness and isolation can make burnout feel worse. Licensed clinical psychologist Cara Goodwin suggests fitting connection into existing tasks, explaining, “Even though it is challenging for a busy parent to even find time, try to build connection into your everyday routines – talk to a friend on the phone while you fold laundry.”

5

Rethink Self-Care

We all know that we need to practice self-care, but sometimes, that feels indulgent and unrealistic. However, some experts stress that the benefits of self-care are farreaching and therefore worth being non-negotiable.

Dr. Bernadette Melnyk explains, “Parents do a great job caring for their children and everybody else, but they often don’t prioritize their own self-care. If children see their parents taking good selfcare, the chances are they’re going to grow up with that value. It has a ripple effect on the children and the entire family.”

6

Recharge In Small Ways

It’s tempting to think that you don’t have the time or money to practice self-care, but you can do it within the routine and budget you already have. Licensed clinical psychologist Cara Goodwin suggests, “Think about what you already do in a day and where you can add joy or peace. For example, listen to an audiobook or a meditation app during your commute to work, or go for a walk with your family after dinner instead of watching TV.”

With the start of the new school year approaching, it can be easy to get caught up in all that needs to be done before, during and after the first bell rings, but it’s important to remember that it’s an exciting time for you – and your children – to celebrate. In this month’s issue of South Florida Family Life, you will find a roundup of local Back to School Bashes for families to gear up for a great year ahead on page 8.

7

Be Kind To Yourself

Parental guilt and worry are real, but they don’t serve you. Experts suggest being gentle with yourself and treating yourself with the same kindness you give your children since being overcritical undermines your well-being.

Psychotherapist Niro Feliciano advises parents to stop “should-ing” themselves and to “accept that you truly are doing the best you can on any given day and making the best decisions given what you know at that time.”

Healing begins at home. Although recent studies strongly suggest that modern parents are struggling, the path to resilience and healing can begin at home, with small, realistic expectations, cultivated connection and small acts of self-care.

Bucket List Blues

WHY I’M NOT JUMPING OUT OF PLANES (YET)

Idon’t have a bucket list. I’m not sure why, but that’s the truth of it. And every time I hear someone say, “Oh, that’s on my bucket list,” I can’t help but feel a pang of envy, which leads me back to the question: Why don’t I have one?

It can’t be too arduous to make a list. In fact, the challenge lies in completing the items — making the list is the easy part. Unless you’re me.

I know that if I were indeed in possession of such a list, but failed to check off each item, the disappointment would be unbearable. Still, I can’t help but wonder: Without an actual list, will I ever do the things I dream of?

People with bucket lists always seem to be the adventurous sort — leaping out of planes, driving race cars, riding in hot air balloons. My version would be far tamer. I’m more of a stay-at-the-Four-Seasons-inBora-Bora kind of gal. I have zero desire to ride horses on the beach. Actually, I have zero desire to ride a horse anywhere.

The truth is, it’s not skydiving that scares me. It’s failure — failure to follow through.

I’m a list maker of the highest order. At any given time, I’ve got at least three: the daily list, the weekly list and one I call “imminent.” Each task gets a tidy little checkbox, and few things in life bring me more satisfaction than coloring in those tiny squares.

So what if I get to the end of the road (forgive the euphemism) and some of my bucket list boxes are left blank? Would I perish from disappointment alone? Maybe. But now that my kids are grown, I find myself

looking back and wondering: Did they ever see me dream out loud? Or did they only see me in task mode — doing, managing and crossing things off? There’s beauty in that, of course. Raising kids requires a million unseen checklists, and I was pretty good at those. But I hope they also got a glimpse of something more. I hope they saw the little sparks — the daydreams tucked between soccer practices and science projects — even if I rarely gave them the space to catch fire.

And now? I suppose the spark is mine to tend to again. I could come up with a completely doable, low-stakes version of a bucket list. But would that be cheating? Isn’t the point to push yourself — to leap, to soar, to chase something bigger than your everyday?

Still, maybe having a list — any list — helps us walk a more interesting path. Life gets tangled up fast in errands and obligations. Maybe a bucket list nudges us off autopilot. Maybe it gives us permission to dream. Or better yet, maybe it dares us to create opportunities instead of waiting for them to float by.

So, while I’ve been resistant, I’m starting to believe that having a bucket list is a good idea. Sometimes we need a reason to do something out of the ordinary — even if that reason is simply coloring in a box.

See you in Bora Bora.
