Celebrating Women

I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful.

First and Foremost... The most amazing woman in my life is my mother Irene Dickman.  She is the most generous, unselfish and kind hearted and compassionate woman I know. Growing up, Mom was always there to comfort my sister and I no matter the situation, patching up bumps and bruises or to provide motherly advice when needed.

Always the consummate host to family and friends at a moments notice, even when going through radiation and chemo treatments for Breast Cancer (20 year survivor) and never complained a day in her life about any issues she was dealing with.

She is one of the classiest women I have ever known and everyone who knows Irene will tell you the exact thing!  Our wives, mothers and daughters and sisters are some of the most influential women in our lives.

And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to West Cobb's women.

They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Thanks

VIP Care Ribbon CuttingTuesday May 20th

In today’s busy world, healthcare can often feel rushed and impersonal. VIPcare is changing that by focusing on a simple but powerful idea: listening to patients. It’s an act that seems like common sense. You have to listen to know what’s going on. However, it is becoming rare in modern healthcare. Doctors are overbooked. They are overworked. They are just too busy to listen. But that’s no excuse. At VIPcare, the patient always comes first.

GRIEVING LIKE GRIEVING LIKE WARRIORS

CARVING SPACE TO GRIEVE BECAUSE EVEN SUPERHEROES NEED TO RETREAT TO THEIR BAT CAVES.

Walking towards the covered bridge, I watch the other Warrior Moms hug and laugh, something they do easily. A photoshoot for our new book Grieve Like a Mother, Survive Like a Warrior, I feel excitement and pride. I know how difficult these chapters were to write. Black letters on a white page make our reality more stark: our children died. Yet, we don turquoise capes this photoshoot day, holding hands, laughing at the silliness but gaining strength from one another.

I remember walking into my first Warrior Moms’ meeting and thinking I was in the wrong place. It sounded like a fun dinner party. Could this be right? I peeked in, and a mom greeted me with a giant hug and said, “You must be Michele. We hate that you’re here but are glad you found us.” I knew these were my people. Meeting monthly, the Warrior Moms of North Atlanta have potluck dinners, share stories, and then end the evening circling up to talk about our children who died. Tears and sometimes deep sobs—none of us have to say a word if we don’t want to. It’s a club no one wants to join, and the pain is real.

We are grateful to Christi Howard and Christine McHenry, who met with Cathy Semeria and other grieving moms for dinner in December 2017. Christine posted a picture on Facebook, and many moms reached out to ask when they’d meet next. Christi created a Facebook group, chose the next date, and named it Warrior Moms. Our gratitude for them is endless as these women intentionally share grief and find joy.

At one meeting, Christine suggested we write a book, and many agreed. We had a weekend retreat, writing drafts to share at the firepit, and lighting paper lanterns to float across the lake, symbolizing the loss of a child. We sang Coldplay’s Fix You, crying when we hit the lyrics, “Lights will guide you home, ignite your bones, and I will try to fix you.” We shared our chapters, and the book journey began.

As an English teacher, I offered to read the chapters and figure out the book’s format. Most moms didn’t consider themselves writers and felt vulnerable. I was honored to shape the pages, knowing the tears that dropped while writing them. I created mini-workshops and a writing retreat to help capture their children’s spirits, allowing readers to see them in action and bring strategies to life with narratives. It was hard work. Watching the cursor blink, trying not to break apart, felt cruel at times.

Grieving Warrior Moms

Journaling at the weekend retreat for the book entries

I knew publishing a book required a social media presence. Podcasts were one avenue, so I asked Santa for podcast equipment and let the Warrior Moms know. Two months passed with no takers. Another Warrior Mom, Amy Durham, texted, “Let’s do this. I’m in!” The next week, we sat in the Alpharetta library with microphones and a sound mixer. It was thrilling and terrifying, but we felt pulled to make it happen. In just a year, we had over 15,000 downloads in 55 countries. The interest humbles us.

Looking back at our photos from that March day, some might wonder why superheroes are on our book cover. Surviving the loss of a child is a pain words cannot express. We crawl into our beds, scream, and cry behind closed doors. Yet we also get up to be moms to our surviving children, and wives to grieving husbands, while maintaining jobs, friendships, bills, and housekeeping. None of these tasks are superhuman, but paired with sorrow, they sure feel that way.

We wanted our book cover to show the fierceness of a grieving mom and the need for each other, a softness that gives us superhuman empathy. I see Rae Ann Gruver speak about hazing risks for her Max. Jenny Stanley fights for car safety for children; Sydney is proud. Cathy Semeria mentors college students, being the spark in the dark like her Tini. Robyn Willis fights for fire safety, keeping Shaun and Morgan’s memory alive. Dele Rech’s foundation for Daniel reminds us to get outdoors and do good for others. Lisa Raber and Amy Durham raise funds for addiction recovery

Warrior Mom, Michele Davis, is accompanied her former student, Slater Nalley at his audition. American Idol discovered Slater’s TikTok video, and they invited him to audition, Slater turned Michele's poem it into a song, "Traces of You", was performed at his American Idol audition, where he earned a golden ticket.

in honor of Keaton and Alec. Brandi Couey keeps Cole’s memory alive with fundraisers, Emily Simmons honors Darren online, and Joan Wasser supports equine projects for her daughter Alex. Christi Howard speaks about the importance of organ donation, honoring Ashley, and Christine McHenry donates scholarships in honor of their athlete Jamie. I host a pick-up lacrosse game, honoring Carter. They give back to their communities who helped them breathe again.

We wrote the book we wished we had in those early months and years. It tells the truth about the terrible pain and dark days, but more importantly, about strategies we use to seek sunshine, go on hikes in the rain, and have deep laughter with friends and family. It doesn’t follow the five stages of grief and doesn’t sugarcoat the journey. We give firsthand accounts of how we live in the ‘and’ of sorrow and joy, anger and happiness. Sometimes, we force ourselves to get out of bed for a child’s soccer game, but we also give ourselves the grace to “feel the feels,” as my co-host Amy says. We may need a full day to sleep after an incredible vacation because while we had fun, the wishing and missing we pushed down is exhausting. So, we carve space to grieve because even superheroes need to retreat to their bat cave.

SWEET TREATS OF DAYS GONE BY

THE PEACH COBBLER FACTORY AIMS TO BRING LOVED ONES AND FRIENDS TOGETHER BY OFFERING NOSTALGIC DESSERTS AND TREATS TO WEST COBB

What do you get when you combine the expertise and attention to detail that only an accountant can possess and the discipline and work ethic of a retired Air Force Veteran? You get a recipe for success! Dee and Derrick Titley, owners of The Peach Cobbler Factory-Marietta, say you can be witness to ‘a nostalgic dessert experience’ as you bite into one of their sweet treats.

"...We provide a welcoming space where families, friends, and dessert lovers can gather and enjoy sweet treats all day and late into the night."

DID YOU HAVE A PRIOR RELATIONSHIP WITH SOMEONE THAT ENCOURAGED YOU TO ENTER INTO THIS RESTAURANT VENTURE?

My journey into the dessert business comes from a mix of passions. While the love for great food and desserts has always been there, the real ‘why’ behind this venture is about creating a welcoming space where people can connect and enjoy quality treats. My childhood bestie Ericka Toms, owner of Peach Cobbler Factory Knoxville, Tennessee, was the first to bring the opportunity to my attention. After much consideration my spouse and I met with corporate, did a little homework and here we are!

WHY DID YOU WANT TO OPEN A DESSERT BUSINESS? ARE THERE ELEMENTS AND EXPERIENCES FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD THAT MAY HAVE ENTERED INTO THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS?

Although I’ve always loved sweets, I actually thought my first business would be a clothing store. However, food has always been a part of my life. My grandmother and her sister owned a restaurant, so I grew up around the restaurant business. I remember looking forward to summer vacations at Grandma's house, because I could eat big, fat burgers with fries and drink root beer in a small, welcoming environment where families gathered throughout the day.  Looking back, maybe it was my destiny to be in the food industry, after all.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE PEACH COBBLER FACTORY? HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR FOOD AND BEVERAGE ESTABLISHMENT FITS INTO THE MARIETTA/WEST COBB LANDSCAPE?

Where else in the world can you go and get twelve flavors of good old- fashioned cobblers, just like grandma used to make with ice cream on top and twelve flavors of banana puddings? If that’s not enough, we incorporate the cobblers and puddings into our shakes, creating Cobbler and Pudd-NShakes. We offer a variety of comforting, indulgent desserts that everybody can enjoy.

In Marietta, our establishment fits right in. We provide a welcoming space where families, friends, and dessert lovers can gather and enjoy sweet treats all day and late into the night. Whether its locals looking for a new favorite dessert spot, or visitors wanting to experience something different, we have it all and we’re excited to be part of Marietta’s vibrant food scene.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? DO YOU PLAN TO EXPAND OR ADD LOCATIONS IN VARIOUS CITIES?

Our goal for the future is to continue growing and bring this concept to more communities. Yes, we plan to open two more locations, one in Douglasville and another somewhere in the Atlanta area.

DO YOU HAVE PLANS FOR COMMUNITY OUTREACH OR EVENTS THAT WILL NOT ONLY HELP YOUR BUSINESS GROW, BUT INCLUDE YOUR CUSTOMERS IN YOUR SUCCESS?

Absolutely! As we celebrate our first year in business, we’re excited to focus more on community outreach and events that bring people together. We’ve already hosted our first toy and coat drive with Simple Needs Georgia and we also participated in sponsorships with two of the local high schools, Sprayberry High School Football Team and Hillgrove Basketball Team. We look forward to continuing to give back through initiatives like charity partnerships, customer appreciation events, and local fundraisers.

Susie Cox Stegall

KENNESAW'S REPORTER AND MUSIC TEACHER

Susie Stegall was a lifelong member of the Kennesaw Baptist Church. This building served the congregation from 1903 to 1952.
Susie Cox Stegall in the 1970s. Image from the First Baptist Church of Kennesaw directory.

Many longtime residents of Kennesaw remember Susie Cox Stegall, the local piano teacher, newspaper correspondent, and center of the town’s social scene. Though she passed away in 1974, she is still fondly remembered over fifty years after her death.

Susie was born on October 26, 1896, and was the daughter of Albert and Susan Cox. Susie’s name likely came from her mother. She was the fifth of eight children, and attended a one-room school house. Susie seems to have developed her interest in music as a child, as in 1913, she provided the music at her sister’s 11th birthday party. As Susie got older, she began spending more time in Atlanta. Just after the United States entered World War I, she went to train to become a nurse at the Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta. Susie worked as a nurse for several years, but ultimately decided it was not the career for her.

In 1919, Susie Cox married Emmett Carey Stegall, an Atlanta detective. They would live in Atlanta for several years. Stegall, however, soon found himself in trouble with the law. In 1923, he shot private detective W. H. Hames and two other men while investigating a prohibition violation, and Hames died soon afterward. While Stegall was exonerated at first, he was later convicted of volunteer manslaughter. He always maintained his innocence and was pardoned in 1932, but his career never recovered. E. C. Stegall died in 1942.

From the mid-1920s onward, Susie Stegall would call Kennesaw home. She began working as a piano teacher and would teach countless students for fifty years. In 1927, she began to handle the publicity of a group she was part of at the Kennesaw Baptist Church. Stegall quickly realized she could learn what

events were taking place around town and submit it to the newspaper. Through this endeavor, she became Kennesaw’s newspaper correspondent for decades.

Stegall’s house was on Moon Station, at the parking lot where the weekly Kennesaw Farmers’ Market is currently held. She called it Magnolia Hill. Her house was believed to have been two railroad shanties moved together and converted into one house. Because of this, it did not have indoor plumbing, and she instead relied on an outhouse in the backyard. A unique story about the structure comes from Joe Bozeman, a local historian and one of her former students. Stegall had just finished doing her business in the outhouse when she began to walk back to her home. Suddenly, a train came through town, derailed, and knocked the shack over. The railroad was very apologetic and paid to install indoor plumbing inside her home.

Starting in 1950, Stegall’s byline began to appear with her pieces in the Marietta Daily Journal , making it much easier to research her life and work. Church events played an especially large role in her reporting, as were reunions, guests from out of town, and illnesses. According to an interview she gave the paper in 1957, one of her favorite columns was when she reported that every house in Kennesaw was given a new address number. However, due to a printing error, the column read “all of the horses in Kennesaw have been numbered” instead of all the “houses.”

In addition to her work for the newspaper and as a piano teacher, her flower garden was recognized. Every Sunday for almost 40 years, she arranged to place flowers on her church’s altar. By 1972, she had mostly retired but continued to teach 25 music students. She passed away on May 26, 1974, at the age of 79.

“As a way of recognizing her service to the community, the City of Kennesaw held “Susie Stegall Appreciation Day” on October 25, 1964.”
“She was laid to rest in the Kennesaw City Cemetery, and her pupils continue to speak about her impact on their lives.”
Susie Stegall’s house, which she called Magnolia Hill, was believed to be two railroad shanties joined together.

Sangria

Rose All Day

A SANGRIA MOM WILL LOVE

There’s something so special about gathering around the table with the people you love—especially when there’s a beautiful, refreshing drink to share. This rosé sangria is light, vibrant, and bursting with freshness. Sweet strawberries, tart kiwi, and juicy blackberries mingle with fragrant basil and a splash of Lillet Rosé, creating the perfect balance of fruit, citrus, and floral notes. Letting everything chill together in the fridge allows the flavors to meld, making each sip even more delicious.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 bottles Rosé

• 6 oz Strawberries

• 6 oz Blackberries

• 6 oz Kiwi Wheels

• 4-5 Basil Sprigs

• 8 oz Lillet Rosé

• 8 oz Lemon Juice

• 24 oz Soda Water

• 8 oz Simple Syrup

At  Home Bar Network , we believe great cocktails should be fresh, handcrafted, and easy to enjoy—this sangria is no exception. The best part? You can make it ahead, so when it’s time to celebrate, all you have to do is pour over ice, top with a little sparkling water, and garnish with fresh fruit and basil. Whether you’re hosting a Mother’s Day brunch or chilling on the patio, this sangria is light, refreshing, and effortlessly elegant—just like Mom. Cheers!

DIRECTIONS

Pour two bottles of rosé into a large pitcher or drink vessel. Add the sliced strawberries, kiwi wheels, blackberries, and basil sprigs. Stir in 8 oz of Lillet Rosé, 8 oz of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and 8 oz of simple syrup (made with equal parts white sugar and filtered water, heated until sugar dissolves and cool). Cover and refrigerate for a few hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld. When ready to serve, pour over ice into wine glasses and top with your favorite sparkling water. Garnish with fresh basil, blackberries, and kiwi wheels.

A person can be eating the right foods and exercising regularly, but if they are hormonally unbalanced, most likely they will not achieve their desired results.

How we feel is affected by hormonal imbalances, issues with our gut & digestion, liver function problems, our cortisol levels and insulin resistance, all effect how we feel and function. These are culprits of old age.

The solution is to be hormonally balanced taking out of the equation “for your age”.

We want you to have hormonal levels of a healthy young adult. If we get you feeling younger, you will start moving younger. When you start moving younger you will start looking younger. That coupled with guidance on nutrition and exercise will lead to a longer happier healthier life.
