January 2026 Publisher's Letter The start of a new year always brings a special kind of energy — a sense of possibility, renewal, and the excitement of a fresh chapter. It’s a natural time to set intentions, explore new opportunities, and think about how we want the year ahead to feel. But January can also come with its own kind of pressure: the push to overhaul routines overnight or live up to lofty resolutions. With this issue of Fairfield Lifestyle, we wanted to take a gentler, more realistic approach — one that encourages longterm, sustainable growth in your physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Progress doesn’t come from perfection; it comes from what we choose to do consistently. In every area of life — health, career, relationships — it’s our everyday habits that carry the greatest impact. Think of it this way: you may not jet off on vacation every month, but planning a couple of getaways each year is both attainable and rejuvenating. Sports have always played a central role in Tara Bennett’s life. From soccer and softball to track and field, she grew up immersed in athletics, ultimately becoming an NCAA Division I basketball player.

Tara has been coaching in the area since 2017 and credits her upbringing in sports with shaping who she is both on and off the court. “Sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Competition has taught me leadership, work ethic, the importance of preparation, how to face adversity and most importantly, how to view failure as data, not a reflection of my self-worth,” she says.

These are some of the core principles she fosters in her newest venture, Strong Girls Training. The program is centered on the development of girls in grades 4th through 12th in strength, conditioning, athletic performance, wellness, leadership, and mental resilience across all sports, as well as non-athletes who want to prioritize health and fitness outside of sports. Tara says, “My coaching style is centered around motivation, progress tracking and innovative techniques to ensure my athletes succeed in reaching CONTINUED >

I believe the mentorship and mental performance piece is what truly sets it apart.” At Strong Girls Training, Tara takes a holistic approach. She instills in the girls the importance of overall wellness and recovery, and teaches them the tools to care for their bodies and minds. “I’ve built a culture where I empower my girls to own their own journey and to feel comfortable asking questions so that they can build healthy lives, habits and bodies that continue to help them win at life at 20, 30 or 40 years old.”

Strong Girls Training’s impact has been significant, with parents noticing meaningful, positive changes in their daughters. Michelle Durkos, whose daughters participate in the group, says she has watched Tara inspire and motivate her

girls, seeing their confidence, strength, growth, and maturity unfold. “Every teen needs a champion, someone who truly sees them, believes in them, and brings out their best. Tara has an innate ability to recognize the strengths within each girl and help those qualities shine. She has been such a gift and a blessing to my daughters. Having someone like her in their corner can make all the difference.”

Tara has experienced it all, from record-breaking championships to tough losses and everything in between. Thanks to the exceptional coaches and mentors who shaped her, she understands exactly what a girl needs to feel whole and powerful, inside and out. She brings all of that experience and heart to Strong Girls Training.

FLM: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE JOYLARK KITCHEN? Jenna McPartland: Joylark is modern fine-dining.

It’s upscale and thoughtful, without being stuffy or arrogant. It’s designed to welcome everyone.

Everything from the menu to the bar to the decor has been designed to ensure that it is a cheerful place with excellent food for everyone. I believe non-vegans will be so surprised to find that they can eat happily here and feel really satisfied - good food is good food. It’s more than that, though. It’s all about hospitality. We want our guests to feel taken care of. I’ve also been intentional about making the restaurant feel special all the time - whether it’s for a proposal, a birthday, drinks with friends, or just grabbing a coffee and sitting with a laptop for a while. A lot of thought went into making Joylark inviting. It feels like a local gathering place as well as a space that’s been dropped in from the city.

FLM: WHAT’S THE GUIDING PHILOSOPHY BEHIND JOYLARK AND HAS IT EVOLVED FROM YOUR PREVIOUS SPOT, THE STAND? JM: People connect around food. Those connections are the dearest thing we have in our lives; the food we share in those moments together should be just as special. At The Stand, we had a community vibe, which was lovely. Joylark brings some of that sensibility along with a few favorite menu items but it’s completely transformed. It’s something new and refreshing for the area.

FLM: THE MENU IS SO CREATIVE, ELEVATED, ROBUST (AND MOUTH-WATERING). WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM? JM: Inspiration comes from all over. But it takes a long time to develop inspiration into a dish and even longer to turn those dishes into a menu. Our Cornflake Potatoes came from a dish my mom made when I was a kid. It didn’t quite work as an elevated appetizer, but with some trial and error and collaboration, we ended up with something really scrumptious that still reminds me of my childhood. Most of the menu comes from the reality that I can’t eat at most restaurants. I feel left out. So, I spend a lot of time thinking about how to create dishes that satisfy everyone.

FLM: WHAT ITEMS ARE EMERGING AS CUSTOMER FAVORITES? JM: Honestly, I’m so pleased to hear great feedback about all our dishes. So much work went into the menu as a whole. But if I had to choose, I think the Carrot Tartare would definitely be a favorite. We salt-bake whole carrots, then grind them and marinate them. It comes on top of a crisp risotto cake with avocado-pea puree and a balsamic reduction. The aforementioned potatoes have become a go-to, for sure. It’s sort of a play on Spanish Patatas Bravas - can’t go wrong with that. I think the stand-out entrees are the Cauliflower Parm and the Tofu Belly and Charred Carrot Curry.

The Cauliflower Parm is really familiar, so I think people who are sort of tentative about plant-based ingredients gravitate toward it. The Tofu Belly pushes creativity a bit more, yet people are surprised by how delicious plant-based food is.

FLM: WHAT’S ONE INGREDIENT YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT AND WHY? JM: Wow. I think most plant-based cooks would say cashews or nutritional yeast. But, for me, I’d go with olive oil or salt. I know that sounds boring, but they’re the foundation of almost all cooking. Good chefs build on foundations.

FLM: THE SPACE IS SO VIBRANT AND BOLD A FEAST FOR THE EYES. HOW DID THAT COME TOGETHER? DID YOU ENVISION THAT AS AN EXTENSION OF THE MENU? JM: I think there are so many misconceptions about plant-based food, which is why I leaned in hard to dishes that are simultaneously approachable and creative. I think the same can be said for design. I worked with Thiel Architecture and Design and we talked a lot about how to create a space that felt chic, upscale and inviting, without playing into stereotypes or trends. We drew inspiration from the Art Deco era and the name Joylark. Nancy Thiel and her team did an incredible job.

FLM: WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME? JM: Joylark is a way of describing myself, in a way.

Larks are songbirds and I’m a Soprano - or at least, I was in a former life. More importantly, they are known for their beautiful music, happiness in flight and their diversity of species and habitat. There’s so much anxiety in our world today, so it was important to me that the name and the restaurant be joyous. I hope the name captures that.

FLM: WHAT DO YOU THINK SURPRISES PEOPLE MOST WHEN THEY TRY YOUR FOOD? JM: People are most surprised by how normal our food is! Yes, it’s creative, but it’s creative in the way other upscale restaurants are: We use quality ingredients and apply excellent technique, nothing weird, just really great food. So many of our Vegan guests have mentioned how happy they are that there’s finally a place for them where they can eat a real meal. And so many of our non-Vegan guests have exclaimed that they could become vegan if they could eat like this all the time. Those are huge compliments and a testament to how we treat our ingredients.

FLM: WHAT DO YOU FIND THE MOST REWARDING? JM: I really love seeing people be happy. Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers?

Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health.

Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids.

“Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.”

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered

are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”

Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens.

Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.

6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”

Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.

7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”

Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly.

For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.

Is the most important key to living a full and healthy life hiding from you? There are many factors to consider when thinking about what constitutes health. The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system.

Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure.

Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment, and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends

to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue.

However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful.

Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:

5. Speak your values out loud

1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.

2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.

3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.

4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.

There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant.

Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking.

Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit!

When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way.
