“Get Out and Meet Your Neighbors”

Hello Neighbors,

Fall is coming and there are so many things to CELEBRATE!

I think most importantly, it is the wonderful weather that we can all enjoy together with our families.  We go outside and get to meet maybe new neighbors and greet our friends.

We are in the season of festivals and the 50th year anniversary of The Woodlands celebration.  This is a fun and unique issue of The Woodlands City Lifestyle as we have had the opportunity to highlight a long time resident to share her story over the past 38  years.

Restauranteurs showcase their stories in our FOODIE issue. This is an interesting time to explore The  Woodlands community as we have seen growth all over. Our dining landscape that was far and few between in 1974 has grown to be a destination for restaurants from Houston and all over.  Travelers are looking for our restaurants as they land at IAH.  Today we can say that we have achieved George Mitchell's vision. Wonderful restaurants to dine at where residents are happy to stay home in The Woodlands.  We have "amazing" restaurants where you never settle.

I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Lyle Lovett, an amazing musician and songwriter.   He is a local and he is a wonderful man.  I have always been a big fan. I am a local as well and we discovered that we may have more things in common than we could have ever considered. I hope you enjoy his story and get to know this man as I have.  A true treasure!  He is heading our 50th Anniversary Celebration Concert at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.  Read through and reserve your seats.

Make sure you and your family make time for this wonderful week of festivities celebrating our 50 year anniversary for The Woodlands. Learn a little something, choose a new restaurant to dine at and get to know your neighbors.

Cheers,

October 2024

As the weekend’s centerpiece unfolded, attendees explored a carefully curated world of luxury.

The Stella Hotel and Lake Walk in College Station played host to a magnificent gathering on August 17th as the second annual Wheels | Watches | Whiskey event, presented by McLaren North America, unfolded with resounding success. With a sold-out attendance doubling from the previous year, more than 350 enthusiasts converged for a weekend dedicated to fine automobiles, timepieces, and spirits.

The event commenced Friday evening with a dinner for partners, with Campfire Restaurants Executive Chef Patrick Nelson creating a menu paired with Ferrari Trento wines, the official choice of Formula 1. This intimate gathering set the stage for Saturday's main attraction.

As the weekend's centerpiece unfolded, attendees explored a carefully curated world of luxury. Whiskey aficionados sampled offerings from renowned Texas brands including Tamdhu, Brazos Valley Vodka Company, The World Whiskey Society, Maverick Distilling, and Four Roses. Inside, a marketplace of fine timepieces and jewelry awaited, featuring collections from Bulova, Austin based Dufrane Watches, Seaholm Watches, and David Gardner's Jewelers, who showcased their line of Tudor watches.

Under August’s rising full moon, The Stella Hotel's backyard and Lake Walk provided a picturesque backdrop for an impressive display of exotic, classic, and race cars. Models from McLaren, Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Lamborghini drew admiring gazes from automotive enthusiasts.

Beyond the indulgence, and most importantly, the event demonstrated a strong commitment to community support. Over $10,000 was raised for local Brazos Valley charity OnRamp Texas, enough to provide a deserving family with safe and reliable transportation.

The festivities continued Sunday with the Round Top Rally. Led by Michael Satterfield, nearly two dozen vehicles embarked on a scenic drive from College Station to Round Top. There, participants enjoyed a special lunch at Royers Round Top Cafe and were treated to a private tour of the Festival Institute.

As the weekend drew to a close, the event's growing popularity and strong community backing were evident. Organizers are already looking ahead to 2025, promising an even more memorable experience for next year's Wheels | Watches | Whiskey gathering.

Just as The Woodlands has flourished and received national recognition, The John Cooper School has taken its place not only as a top school in Houston, but as a premier school in Texas and the nation.

This year the school was named the top private K-12 school in Montgomery County, as well as #2 in the entire Houston area, #3 in Texas, and #27 in the nation, by Niche.com in its annual school rankings. It’s a true testament to our faculty, to our students, our alumni, our whole Cooper community. It reflects what Cooper families and teachers have known for years. We are constantly innovating and growing with purpose.

Cool and Classic Lyle Lovett

Sharing of Love, Life and Excitement; Heading up The 50 Year Anniversary Celebration Concert

The 50th anniversary concert for The Woodlands is on October 18th and we were fortunate to spend a little time with the headliner, Klein’s very own Four Time Grammy Award Winner, Lyle Lovett.

It was the perfect opportunity to not only look back on both The Woodlands and Klein areas but also about what is important to Lyle as a person and an artist.

With more than a dozen studio albums under his belt, albums like "Lyle Lovett and His Large Band" and "The Road to Ensenada" stand out as milestones, not just for the accolades they received, but for the stories they tell and the boundaries pushed.

Looking back, Lovett sees a life painted in the rich hues of creativity, a career built on respect for musical traditions while constantly pushing their boundaries. He's seen decades of dedicated fans who found pieces of themselves in songs like "If I Had a Boat" or "That's Right (You're Not from Texas)”.

At 66, Lyle Lovett reflects on a life well-lived, a career that leaves an indelible mark on Americana/folk music, and a legacy that continues to inspire new generations of musicians who dare to color outside the lines.

The following is just but a brief view into that wonderful conversation.

YOUR MOST RECENT ALBUM TITLED "12TH OF JUNE"

LEAD SONG RECALLS THE DAY YOUR TWIN SON AND DAUGHTER WERE BORN, POT LUCK DINNER, FAMILY

GATHERINGS AND THE HEAVY LOVE YOU HAVE AS A FATHER AND A HUSBAND.  WHEN PERFORMING LOCALLY, YOU ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR FAMILY IS THERE TO CELEBRATE WITH YOU AND CANDIDLY INTRODUCE THEM TO THE CROWD.  WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP IN THE WOODLANDS AREA ( KLEIN, TX)  IN THE 60'S?

“Well as you know, when I was growing up in Klein, it was still out in the country. There were still lots of farms up and down Spring Cypress Road, and Stuebner Airline. And there were still lots of farm families there. My family, the Kleins, farmed there since the mid-eighteen hundreds, so I grew up on part of my grandpa Klein's farm place. By the time I came along, he was retired, but his sons kept the farm going. I was able to work in the hay field and in the dairy barn. I had a real appreciation for farm life, mainly because of how it involved the entire extended family. Everybody pitched in, everybody helped. It was a wonderful way to grow up.”

WHAT WAS IT LIKE AS FAR AS GOING TO SCHOOL IN KLEIN AT THAT POINT?

“Well, I went to Trinity Lutheran through the eighth grade. In those days, Trinity had a couple of hundred students. We always had two grades in one classroom, one teacher for every two grades. It was a wonderful preparation for going to Klein High School. Klein was the only high school in the school district in those days, the class I was in was the biggest class to date, which was 418. My mom was in the class of 1945, there were 15 in her

PROVIDED

class. So from 1945 to 1975, it grew that much, and then just continued to grow almost exponentially after that.”

WHAT WAS THE FIRST PLACE THAT YOU ACTUALLY PLAYED IN THE AREA WHERE YOU WERE ACTUALLY PAID, OR ACTUALLY WAS YOUR FIRST GIG?

“It was the summer of 1976, my high school buddy, Bruce Lyon, was a year ahead of me in school, he was class of '74 at Klein, and Bruce and I learned some songs together. We got a gig playing two nights a week at a restaurant on FM 1960 across from Champions, called The Mariner. Sammy Nolan was the manager of the Mariner in those days, and Sammy hired us. We came in and played a few songs for him, he let us play two nights a week there the entire summer.

Bruce and I played on Tuesdays and Saturdays, all summer. That was the first time I’d ever gotten paid to play, and it was just a great experience. From then on when I went back to school that fall, I just kept playing. I’d call around, ask for gigs, and just kept playing from then on. I played somewhere just about every week after that”.

I READ THAT YOU LOVED PHOTOGRAPHY AND STILL LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY TODAY AND YOU PULLED A LOT OF YOUR PHOTOS INTO YOUR SONG TITLES AND THEMES. WERE THERE OTHER HOBBIES GROWING UP AS WELL?

“My parents made choices in their lives based on what they had to do. They both went to work for the Humble company when they were 17 years old. Then they went to night school at the University of Houston, put themselves through college, went to night school while they worked full time. Even after I was born, they were still in school. I got to go to both of their graduations. I remember. They worked really hard all their lives, and they gave me the chance to do things. They made choices based on what they had to do. They gave me the chance to make choices in my life based more on what I wanted to do.

And with any of my interests, from motorcycle racing, which I did growing up, working in motorcycle workshops in Houston and Conroe, and racing off-road races with my parents' support, and help, and involvement, from doing that to taking music lessons. My music lessons used to be in downtown Houston. And my mom, after work, one day a week, she would come drive all the way out to Klein, pick me up, and drive me all the way back downtown for a guitar lesson once a week. They gave me the chance to do things that I love to do”.

MOTORCYCLE RACING?

"I went to work for Richard Sanders when I was 14, my first job away from the family at Cycle Shack in Bel Air. I worked there during the summers. Every day during the summers, then on Saturdays during the school

year. Once again, my parents, after commuting from Klein to downtown Houston all week they’d drive me to Bel Air and drop me off in the morning, Saturday morning, and then pick me up Saturday evening. It shows much trouble they went to for me, to be able to do something that I love to do. And then Richard bought the Honda-Yamaha dealership in Conroe from my cousin, actually. And then the last year I worked for Richard. I worked in Conroe, at the shop that's now Cycle Shack North, which is just off the Frazier exit. So yeah, I've been a part of the motorcycle world since then. We all started riding as a family when I was about 12 years old. In my racing days, however, I rode Pentons and Husqvarnas”.

YOUR SONGS, WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION?

“Most of my songs come from observations in everyday life. In terms of songs specifically, they run the gamut from things that are very literal, to things that are imagined, or things that are seen through the eyes of others. There's not just one sort of inspiration for me, it's the whole world around us”.

A FAVORITE IS “IF I HAD A BOAT”. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THAT SONG AS YOU WROTE IT?

“Oh, gosh. Well, thank you. I was 20 years old and knew I wanted to play music, but I didn't know how realistic of an aspiration that was. It was just a lighthearted look from a child's point of view, what do I want to be when I grow up? I thought to myself, "Why can't you just be everything you want to be when you grow up?"

So, the idea of that was to be a captain of a great ship and be a cowboy at the same time! The beginning of the idea for the song came from an experience I had when I was about 10 years old, and I decided to try to ride my Shetland pony though a little pond next to my parents' house. We got about halfway, and we both started swimming. I always thought to myself, if we had the right technology, we could have made it”.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING THAT! IT’S AMAZING.

“But the real meaning behind the song really was just that I was struggling with what I wanted to do in my life. I didn't know if I'd actually get to do it. So, again, I thought, "Why can't you just be everything that you want to be all at the same time”?

THIS IS NOT ONLY THE WOODLANDS ANNIVERSARY, BUT IT'S ACTUALLY THE FOODIE ISSUE. DO YOU HAVE FAVORITE RESTAURANTS HERE IN THE AREA THAT YOU LIKE TO STILL FREQUENT?

“Oh, gosh. Yeah, so many. Are you kidding? Yeah. In the Woodlands in particular? Well, let's first talk about

our regrets. I miss Hyden’s Seafood and Steakhouse. New Orleans Sam, who was the original oyster shucker there, worked at a little bar next to the Exxon building. I met Sam before he even moved out to Hyden’s in The Woodlands. But yeah, these days there's so many great places to eat. We go to Pappasito's, we go to Goode Company. We go to Escalante, we go to Perry's. We make the rounds, and it's close.

I also remember going to the ice skating rink right after it was built. It was that first part of The Woodlands off of Grogan's Mill that was developed. In part of the first developments, my parents had friends from Exxon who built homes there. We started going to The Woodlands right away. And in terms of having a nice place to go on a date in high school, The Woodlands was kind of it! We had the ice skating rink and The Glass Menagerie restaurant next to it.

So yeah, that was the place. But, just to go ice skating, which I was terrible at, but it was a big deal when The Woodlands started, and it's amazing. It is just amazing what it's become today. And it's rare that we go into Houston. You just don't have to. Our children were born at St. Luke's. We go to the Woodlands for everything”.

THE UPCOMING CONCERT HERE IN THE WOODLANDS, YOU'RE GOING TO BE WORKING WITH HAYES CARLL. IT SEEMS LIKE YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN COLLABORATING A LOT LATELY. YOU ALSO HAVE JACK INGRAM ADDED ONTO THE TICKET, BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

“I love Hayes, he's such a wonderful person. How he is personally is reflected in the songs he writes, in his point of view and the words he chooses. The same way with Jack. Jack's got such a great sense of humor. When The Woodlands first invited me to be part of this, I just felt really honored that they wanted to have hometown folks to be part of the celebration, that Jack grew up in The Woodlands, that Hayes grew up there, and I grew up across Cypress Creek, across Spring Creek,

that means the world to me. That they would think of me to be part of this celebration. We're going to have a good time. We'll end up singing some stuff together, I'm sure”.

THANK YOU FOR SPENDING TIME WITH US. ONE FINAL QUESTION. DO YOU HAVE A “SECRET SAUCE"? IS THERE SOMETHING THAT KEEPS YOU GOING, THAT CONTINUES TO DRIVE YOU TO REINVENT YOURSELF?

“Oh, gosh. Well, first of all, life is always interesting, but family has always been the center of my life. My parents, extended family, grandparents, aunts and uncles, my cousins. I was always especially close with the cousins that I grew up around. But now at my age, having children of my own, the world is just a wondrous place to be, through their eyes especially. For me, all along it's been family. Now, being able to see the twins at seven years old become interested in anything is exciting to me. To be able to raise them with knowledge of my family, and knowledge of how I grew up, being able to tell them stories about their great-grandparents. For them to know their grandmother.

My mom gave up on me years ago, but she's 94 years old now. And I'm convinced that my children being here has kept her going with an extra enthusiasm these last few years. All of that is what's important to me. I'm thankful that I had great teachers growing up at Trinity Lutheran School, great ministers of music.

I feel lucky that my family has always supported me pursuing my interests. I'm mindful of that with every second I spend with my children. I just hope they're able to find something that they love to do as much as I've loved playing music”.

The Golden Anniversary Era

The Woodlands 50th Anniversary is finally here, and planning has been underway for some time for the epic week of activities. The Township's Planning Committee and Howard Hughes Team have been toiling to make the week both memorable and meaningful. Here are some festivities to add to your calendar as we celebrate fifty years.

“Our weeklong celebration in The Woodlands is a tribute to an impressive five-decade journey and the fundamental pillars that have shaped our community: a deep respect for nature, a commitment to philanthropy, a dedication to the cultural arts and a strong sense of civic unity,” shares Kim Phillips, Vice President, Marketing & Community Affairs, Howard Hughes.

CELEBRATE THE WOODLANDS 50TH ANNIVERSARY ALL WEEK LONG

Our very own local star, Lyle Lovett
“I HAVE A GREAT PASSION FOR THE WOODLANDS, I BELIEVE IN ITS FOUNDATION,...”

Monday, October 14, is the kick-off where community leaders will launch the celebratory festivities with proclamations from state, regional, and local officials, as well as a dedication of a time capsule putting in special objects to commemorate the historic milestone.

Tuesday is dedicated to a Day of Giving. Community service and philanthropy are pillars in The Woodlands and its first nonprofit organization, Interfaith of The Woodlands will be spotlighted and how residents can plug into volunteer opportunities to give back to the community on the website TheWoodlands.com. From family services, senior services, Interfaith of The Woodlands has been a backbone of support from the start. Their programs and impact on our community are pivotal. All 50th anniversary merchandise sold benefits Interfaith of The Woodlands.

Wednesday's tree dedication will be a meaningful symbolic representation of the 50 years of growth and environmental stewardship in The Woodlands. The Woodlands greenspace is appreciated by all. A stunning, signature hardwood tree will be dedicated at Northshore Park, along with the planting of a 100-gallon tree in each residential village in partnership with the Village Associations. The hardwood tree will represent growth, resilience, and life. Much like its strong roots, our community is anchored and grounded as a strong support for its residents and businesses. Spiritually, a tree's vines and branches are intertwined and embody life.

Thursday, October 17, is The Woodlands Arts Council's Mural Unveiling. The Woodlands Arts Council has had a massive surprise art installation underway since summer when they announced their public art project. They put out a call to local artists in Montgomery County and the portion of The Woodlands located in Harris County for samples of prior mural artwork. One talented artist has been selected among 38 applicants to paint a mural to the theme: The beauty of The Woodlands the livable forest 50th Anniversary Mural. The mural unveiling will take place on Thursday. "It will come alive and add an element of surprise," shares Jenny CarattiniWright, the Executive Director and CEO at The Woodlands Arts Council. The 38 applicants were narrowed down to five finalists and the winner was chosen by a panel of judges from Howard Hughes and The Township. CONTINUED >

Don't miss the spectacular fireworks and drone show about Lake Woodlands.
The Woodlands is known for their beautiful parks and trees. Northshore Park's tree dedication will represent the 50 years of growth.

During Tuesday’s Day of Giving event, a food drive and coat drive drop-off will be set-up for residents to participate. Volunteers are always needed year-round in many capacities for our families and senior residents.

Interfaith of The Woodlands relies on donations and volunteer support to meet their critical mission. Being a solution to food insecurity in our community is a mission the nonprofit excels at. As the holidays approach, think of hosting a food drive in your neighborhood or at work. A critical need is always diapers, cleaning products, and hygiene items.

Interfaith creates a monthly needs list available on their website woodlandsinterfaith.org to determine what types of non-perishable foods to collect. Financial contributions are also welcome, and they can purchase food in bulk at a better rate with their nonprofit status.

Have you heard of their Veggie Village where 75% of food harvested is donated to their pantry? Their community donation gardens are located at the Alden Bridge Sports Park and Wendtwoods Park in partnership with The Township and many community volunteers.

For more information contact Jenni Fisher at Jennifer.fisher@woodlandsinterfaith.org

"We love our public arts program, it's accessible for all," shares Jenny, "When you are walking down across the waterway, this mural will be an element of surprise you are not expecting. That wall will come alive."

The spectacular art display is located behind The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion located at 2500 Lake Robbins Drive, in The Woodlands. Readers can learn more about the programs they offer yearround at www.thewoodlandsartscouncil.org.

Of course, the weekend is chock full of family-fun. Friday night is the much-anticipated free concert presented by Howard Hughes. Lyle Lovett and His Large Band featuring Woodlands' own Hayes Carll and Jack Ingram as opening acts. The pre-concert celebration is from 5 to 7 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:15p.m. Tickets were based on availability at www.thewoodlands.com for the lucky residents who snagged the complimentary priority access tickets. Howard Hughes is underwriting the entire show to make the epic event free. Saturday's Grand Public Celebration aptly memorializes the actual date, October 19, of the 50th anniversary date. A grand public extravaganza, produced by The Woodlands Township, will be held at Northshore Park and the Hughes Landing Band Shell in The Woodlands. The night will culminate lighting up the sky above Lake Woodlands. Wood Forest Bank and Waste Connections are co-sponsors for this event presenting the innovative hightech drone and fireworks show.

“I have a great passion for The Woodlands, I believe in its foundation, that it’s a community for all faiths, ethnicities, cultures, social economic groups, as well as ages,” says Dr. Ann Snyder of The Township. “That is what makes the celebration so unique, it’s embraced that foundation for 50 years.”

Join in the Golden Anniversary celebration as we pay honor and tribute to community growth, support, and all those who rally every week making The Woodlands shine. We celebrate five decades of diversity, innovation and community pride, looking forward to a promising future.

INTRODUCING THE SPECTRE

THE ROLLS ROYCE EXPERIENCE IS ELECTRIC

BY CHRIS SPICKS
Thanks to Aisha and Eric Dubose for letting us use their beautiful home for the photo shoot.

Electric cars. They’re big, they’re heavy, they’re smooth, and they’re fast. That also happens to be the same way most people describe the RollsRoyce experience. It makes perfect sense then that this storied British manufacturer set the new gold standard for all Electric Vehicles.

In the realm of ultra-luxury automobiles, concerns such as cost, charging infrastructure, and charging speeds, which may deter daily use of EVs, pale in comparison. With a generous range of 266 miles, the Spectre addresses the needs of its

a mental note of when I forget that this is an electric car and simply a Rolls-Royce. To answer that question it was less than three miles and before I made it to the Interstate. You simply forget until you have an “oh yeah” moment.

Grab the power assisted driver’s side carriage style door and take your rightful place on the driver’s throne. To close the largest door they’ve ever created, you don’t reach out like some peasant. No no, you’re not about that lifestyle anymore. Simply press your foot on the brake pedal

discerning clientele, many of whom boast extensive automotive collections that include conventional gasoline-powered vehicles for lengthier journeys. Contrary to popular belief, Rolls-Royce owners in the United States frequently opt to pilot their own vehicles, shunning the need for chauffeurs. For them, driving is not merely a necessity but a pleasure, and when terrestrial travel fails to suffice, alternatives like helicopters and private jets seamlessly fill the void.

Engineers behind the Spectre set their sights on a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 4.4 seconds—a meticulously calculated endeavor aimed at delivering immediate passing power while maintaining a seamless journey for passengers, ensuring they remain ensconced in comfort without undue turbulence. It’s worth noting that this feat is achieved with a weight akin to that of a fully-equipped Ford King Ranch F-250, a testament to the meticulous engineering prowess housed within the hallowed halls of Goodwood.

New for the 2024 model year, the Spectre rides on the same “Architecture of Luxury” platform as the Cullinan and Ghost. I had the opportunity to spend some time with one last week and that encounter was memorable. At dinner the night before, one of the executives posed a question to me about the upcoming drive. He said to take

and the door closes for you. To start the vehicle the start/stop button, like all of their models, is on the driver’s left hand side.

Just remember though you don’t drive a Spectre, you simply float along inside. I know that sounds weird but that truly is the most accurate way to describe it. You don’t hear the outside world. You don’t feel the bumps and undulations of the road beneath you. A personal wheel-born sanctuary with no fewer than 5000 LED starlights around you.

Every tactile encounter within the Spectre’s cabin is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail. From the satisfying click of the metal knobs finding their precise detents to the sumptuous feel of the steering wheel in hand, every element exudes a sense of refined luxury.

With its sleek, sloping roofline, the Spectre prioritizes the driver’s experience over passenger comfort, a departure from the spaciousness typically associated with its stablemates. Yet, even in solitude, the Spectre envelops occupants in a symphony of sound, courtesy of its 18-speaker, 1400-watt Bespoke Audio system.

Driven by a surge of curiosity, I pressed the accelerator to the floor from a standstill on a quiet farm-to-market road just north of town. What followed was a departure from the

expected theatrics: no frantic wheel-spinning, no artificial symphony blaring through the speakers, no sudden jolt as the car lunged forward. Instead, the Spectre embarked on its journey with a quiet resolve, embodying the quintessentially English spirit of understated efficiency.

So in conclusion let me pose this question. If Rolls-Royce builds the best cars ever made and this is the best Rolls ever, is this then the best car ever? Come try it and I’ll let you decide.

THE TRADITION CONTINUES AT AMERIGO’S GRILLE 30 YEARS LATER.

To hear Casey and Nancy Kosh describe it, October 15th, 1994 was dark and rainy, magical and yet unbelievable. Hurricane Nona had just passed through, and there was major flooding in Grogan’s Point. That wasn’t the biggest event that evening in The Woodlands though.  This just also happened to be the grand-opening of Amerigo’s and nothing was going to stop that from happening! To hear Casey and Nancy recall it, “We were surprised and thrilled by such an enthusiastic turnout!”

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Tina Kosh Goodson and her father and owner Casey Kosh

At the time they were young parents of two small children and were counting on the success of this long-awaited vision. “I remember walking into the restaurant that evening and being blown away, amazed. Locals were ecstatic and came from around the area to welcome and celebrate the first and only fine-dining Italian restaurant in The Woodlands”.

In attendance that night was Maestro Dagang Chen of The Woodlands Symphony. The Woodlands Symphony received the proceeds from the event and nearly every member of The Woodlands Chamber of Commerce was in attendance. Also in attendance were Philamena Baird and Dr. David Gottlieb.

The food stations located around the entire restaurant were “showy and sensational”. Chef Arturo (still Chef to this day) and his staff created stunning displays of the best Amerigo’s Grille would have to offer. “Guests sampled delicacies before opening day, the tables overflowing with edible flowers and birds carved out of various fruits and vegetables!”

Following the Grand Opening, George Mitchell convened a Board Meeting and told his members, “I would like you to support this restaurant”. George always believed the restaurants and other amenities add to the quality of life in The Woodlands. It was wonderful to be supported by Mr. Mitchell and a blessing.

Fast forward to thirty years later and Amerigo’s Grille has been a premier fine dining destination in The Woodlands for three decades. As one of the few independently owned restaurants in The Woodlands, Amerigo’s offers a chef-driven menu, an award-winning selection of fine wines, a beautiful art collection, and elegant private dining rooms. They continue to

bring Italian-American style cooking, blending contemporary and traditional elements. What truly sets them apart though is their long-standing deep commitment to the community, demonstrated through their support of various charities and donations, all aimed at enhancing the quality of life in The Woodlands.

Congratulations to Amerigo’s Grille and we wish you many more decades of success!

Beautiful Blue Door Coffee

For most of us, coffee is an essential to our morning routine and for others, it’s a delicious social drink served at some of the most cozy spots in The Woodlands. Because of their shared devout love for coffee, five entrepreneurs have created some of the best aesthetic coffee shops in The Woodlands. Owners of Blue Door Coffee Co., Ome Calli Café, Dosey Doe, Levure Bakery, and Wilderlove all serve unique atmospheres yet delicious coffee!

BLUE DOOR COFFEE CO.

Sitting directly on the waterway, Blue Door Coffee Company serves an “upscale, inviting, and eclectic” vibe where they encourage the community to gather over a delectable cup of coffee. When asking owner, Monica, about the seasonal drinks, she described some of the most mouthwatering flavors! “We always have a pumpkin spice latte that is crafted with real pumpkin puree. It’s not super sweet and we rely on the complexity of spices with subtle pumpkin flavors. We are also introducing a honey fig latte this season. This drink

combines the natural sweetness of honey with the fruity undertones of figs.” Even more desirable is knowing that Blue Door makes all their syrups (aside from the sugar-free ones) with real ingredients. It truly starts with a dream. “I would say it is just like anything worthwhile, plan to work really hard, don’t fear failure, be persistent, and surround yourself with amazing people who are strong where you are weak.” Approaching its sixth year in The Woodlands, Blue Door is not slowing down whatsoever and continues to serve fantastic drinks for the community!

OME CALLI CAFÉ

Nestled in a quiet strip off of Grogan’s Mill, Ome Calli Café is a delightful and welcoming atmosphere giving a “home-like vibe.” This vibe has earned it the name “The hidden gem of The Woodlands.” Ome Calli Café is unique through its attention to conscious eating and organic ingredients. One of their most popular drinks is The Alchemist which is a latte made with Cacao, cinnamon, and the Reishi mushroom. They also have a variety of regions for coffee beans. “For example, our Organic coffee from Mexico comes from Chiapas. We offer a variety of regions, including Guatemala, Kenya, Colombia, and Brazil.” When describing their start to owning a coffee

shop, Miguel felt as if it found them! “I would say that the coffee shop found us. My wife Liliana and I used to be customers of this coffee shop, formerly known as Artisan Culture Coffee. The previous owner, Heather Brucks, offered the shop to us. We added our touch, culture, and flavors.” Ome Calli Cafe is quite the gem of a coffee shop and is definitely worth the visit!

DOSEY DOE

Located in Alden Bridge within the quaint neighborhood hub is Dosey Doe Coffee Shop. Serving both hot and iced coffee, Dosey Doe has just about every flavor syrup you could imagine! And, if you find their coffee dancing on your taste buds

then you can get it by the pound. Each coffee roast has a fun, country name such as “More Please”, “Rodeo Espresso”, and “Dinner Bell” to name a few! They are also known for their delightful breakfast items, some of which are scratch classics while others are creations of their own! If you’re looking for a classic, antique-filled,  Americana decor cafe that has a classic charm then Dosey Doe is your place!

LEVURE BAKERY

In Creekside off of Kuykendahl is the warm and welcoming Levure Bakery. With the aim to “create a cozy, European-style café experience where customers can relax, connect, and enjoy the simple pleasures

of good coffee and freshly baked goods”, Levure Bakery is the perfect fall meet-up spot! With the desire to capture each season’s essence, Levure’s excitement for fall is evident! Their specialty drinks include the beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte and a Maple Pecan Cold Brew along with their regular staples like their lattes, espresso, and cappuccinos.  What really makes their coffee delectable is their dedication to carefully sourcing coffee beans from reputable farms that emphasize ethical practices along with excellent quality. The same can be said for their teas which come from premium suppliers. When asked about owner, Jose’s dream of owning a coffee shop, he described his

dream as a passion turned into a wonderful reality! “We turned that dream into reality by staying true to our vision, focusing on quality, and building a space where people feel at home.”

WILDERLOVE COFFEE

Last but not least we have Wilderlove Coffee. While most think of a brickand-mortar building for coffee shops, Wilderlove had a different idea! Their coffee shop is actually a coffee trailer surrounded by gorgeous oak trees and beautiful greenery, located in Montgomery. “As a team, we strive to create a peaceful and serene atmosphere where people

can step out of the hustle of the world and into a corner of our city where time can stand still and the focus can be on community and craft.” Not only is their location beautiful, but so are the seasonal drinks! Some of their drinks include Royal 33, Sir Washington, and The Salty American which is a cold brew flavored with their house-made caramel syrup and topped with charred oak maple-infused cold foam. Delicious! When asked about starting a coffee shop, Wilderlove owners spent a year researching the coffee craft. “We did not settle for ‘good enough’ but instead became dedicated to excellence in our vision and craft.”

Celebrating “Southern Flavors of Texas”

Lasagna and Austin Hope Wine
Coconut Shrimp
Blackberry Cobbler

As a proud resident of The Woodlands and someone who appreciates the finer things in life, I can’t help but marvel at how The Republic Grille has become a cornerstone of our community. This year, as The Republic Grille celebrates its tenth anniversary, it's particularly special to see it coincide with the 50th anniversary of The Woodlands itself—a community envisioned by George Mitchell, whose legacy lives on in every corner of this town.

When Terry McBurney opened The Republic Grille in 2014, he wasn't just adding another restaurant to the area. He saw a void in The Woodlands for locally owned establishments that could serve as gathering places and honor the unique history of our town. His vision was to create a comfortable, welcoming space filled with historical photos and memorabilia that would connect us to the roots of The Woodlands while also looking forward to the future.

Terry isn’t a traditional restaurateur, but rather a self-made entrepreneur with a passion for bringing his ideas to life. And bring them to life, he has—with incredible success. The Republic Grille’s expansion to Magnolia off FM 2978 and Spring off Grand Parkway 99 is a testament to how well his vision has resonated with locals and visitors alike. Each location is thoughtfully decorated to reflect the history and character of its surrounding area, further embedding The Republic Grille into the fabric of our community.

Of course, it’s not just the ambiance that makes The Republic Grille special—it’s the food, too.  With a menu that features "Southern Styled" dishes infused with the flavors of Texas, this is a place where comfort meets culinary excellence. From the Chicken Fried Steak and Blackberry Cobbler to the Gumbo and Mac & Cheese Bites, every dish is made from scratch with savory sauces, dressings, and rich toppings that elevate the experience.

The Republic Grille has earned praise for both its food and service. Reviews on platforms like Yelp and Texas Trip Advisor highlight the exceptional and personable staff, who go above and beyond to make guests feel at home. The menu has garnered equally glowing reviews with specialty items and a wide selection of wines and handcrafted cocktails being particularly popular.

In recognition of its outstanding offerings, The Republic Grille was voted "Best of the Best" by Trip Advisor in 2022 and 2023, underscoring its status as a beloved dining destination in

TERRY MCBURNEY

Founder | The Republic Grille

The Woodlands. This recognition is well-deserved, as it reflects not just the quality of the food but also the atmosphere and service that make dining at The Republic Grille a truly special experience.

In celebrating ten wonderful years, The Republic Grille continues to give back to the community that has embraced it, with donations to local charities supporting first responders, firefighters, and police officers. It’s this commitment to community, combined with outstanding cuisine and service, that makes The Republic Grille not just a restaurant, but a beloved institution in The Woodlands.

Terry is a proud sponsor of The Woodlands 50th Anniversary celebration being held at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

Congratulations, Terry, on a job well done!

DINING BOOM

BRIGHT CULINARY MINDS ARE MAKING THE WOODLANDS A DESTINATION FOR FOODIES

In his book, The Woodlands: The Inside Story of Creating a Better Hometown, longtime resident and past president of The Woodlands Corporation Roger Galatas wrote that, “From the beginning, George Mitchell’s plan for The Woodlands was to make it a real town, not just a bedroom community. He wanted people to live and work in The Woodlands, and he has been successful.” Both Mitchell and Galatas would be pleased to know that in addition to living and working here, residents of The Woodlands are very enthusiastically dining out here too.

In the very early days after its founding in October 1974, the pioneer spirit led many beleaguered city-dwellers to move to The Woodlands. Dining options back then were a bit scarce, and the restaurants from the community’s first decades are still cherished in online chat rooms and Facebook groups, where early residents reminisce about places like the long-closed Hyden’s Seafood on Rayford at I-45, the old Ace’s Chinese in Panther Creek, and one of the sole white-tablecloth dining establishments for miles around, Amerigo’s, which is still going strong and this year celebrates the 30th anniversary of its opening in Grogan’s Mill back in 1994.

If you were looking for more (something from the Houston Chronicle’s list of best restaurants, perhaps), then you might end up trekking into the heart of Houston—inside the 610 Loop—to the Galleria area, Upper Kirby, the Heights and other restaurant-centric neighborhoods. But in recent years, there is less need to make that drive. The Woodlands restaurant scene has grown and evolved well beyond the franchise-based offerings that usually make their home in the exurbs. Through a confluence of events— the spotlight brought by national awards placing the community at or near the top for best city to live, to raise a family, and to buy a home; the completion of the Grand Parkway; and the ever-growing hunger of social media food culture—The Woodlands is gaining notice as a vibrant center for culinary activity. The results are a boon for us all.

Kevin Lee, director of operations at Phat Eatery, says the food vibe here is different than might be expected by those who haven’t experienced it. “It’s not suburbia. It has a character profile all its own. This is a serious food scene, so serious. Once they [residents] get a taste of something different, everyone here talks about it,” says Lee. He says there were many places that were considered

for the restaurant’s second location, after the success of the acclaimed Malaysian restaurant’s original location in Katy Asian Town, but James Beard-nominated Chef Alex Au-Yeung had his sights set on The Woodlands. Au-Yeung passed away due to cancer just months before the restaurant’s opening, but Lee, along with co-director of operations Marvin He, brought the chef’s vision to fruition, completing a total renovation of an existing restaurant space to open this past summer in The Grogan’s Mill Village Center. (The first shopping center in The Woodlands, GMVC itself is currently undergoing renovation, with completion slated for next summer.)

There may be no other restaurant that has better showcased The Woodlands as a community that takes its food seriously than TRIS, located on Waterway Avenue. Under the helm of Chef Austin Simmons, the nationally acclaimed restaurant has helped to shine a spotlight on The Woodlands as a place to experience exceptional dining outside of Houston proper. “People of different backgrounds are moving here, and they are helping to shape the community’s food scene. They are educated, well-traveled, they have a heart for giving and the arts, and they know good food,” says Simmons. “We have come a long way from the time when there were few chef-driven restaurants. I never thought that someone would travel from Canada—or England—and would stop in The Woodlands to dine, but they are,” he says.

“The Woodlands residents know their food and wine, and they have high expectations,” says Enrique Orioli of Orioli Restaurant Group, a family-owned company that has brought an array of concepts to The Woodlands, including Azzurro, Marcoza, Terra Vino, Costa Fina, and Via Emilia, the family’s original flagship restaurant, which moved from its first location on FM 1960 to make its home in The Woodlands Crossing shopping center of Indian Springs back in 2011. “Back when we were still operating

in the 1960 location, we had guests that kept coming from The Woodlands, and they would tell us we needed to open Via Emilia there,” says Orioli. “I cannot say enough about the great support that we got from the community. We felt right at home, old faces and new ones to welcome us.”

Today’s restaurant scene in The Woodlands, now more than ever, has begun to display the individuality, consistent quality, and skill of chef-driven menus--from the lavish, modern Indian cuisine found at Amrina in Waterway Square to the culinary creativity and international flair of Fielding’s Local Kitchen + Bar in Creekside Park, the community has a respect for culinary traditions with an openness to new flavors.

“What I hear from chefs I know is that many of them are looking at The Woodlands,” says Chef Beatriz Martines, owner of Xalisko, and an alum of James Beard award-winning Chef Hugo Ortega’s H-Town Restaurant Group. Last year, Martines and her husband opened Xalisko in an

existing space on Lake Woodlands Drive near The Woodlands Mall. Her well-received restaurant specializes in Mexican cuisine inspired by Martines’s childhood in Jalisco. “We’re getting people from Sugar Land, Katy, and many other places,” says Martines. “We appreciate that a lot.” She says that one of her regulars from Houston likes to joke, “’Every time I come here, I have to pack a lunch for the trip!’” Martines believes more creative offerings will continue to spring up in The Woodlands.

Social media, business travel, and live performances at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion are attracting food enthusiasts who end up savoring not only the food scene but the unique character of The Woodlands. “When someone gets off a plane or comes by before a concert at Cynthia Woods because they’ve read about us, they’re struck by the community itself. It’s not suburbia,” says Simmons. “They are surprised at the park-like setting. The food and arts scenes have evolved as George and Cynthia Mitchell wanted,” he says. “Now you have Michelin coming, and that’s a whole new conversation.”

As the vaunted Michelin Guide gears up to present its first Texas restaurant publication later this year, time will tell if the bright food minds that call The Woodlands home might earn some of the spotlight. What’s certain is that the food-obsessed among us will continue to reap the benefits of so many well-conceived restaurants putting down roots and thriving here. Those of us who have lived here for many years and have watched the transformation happen are appreciating every bite of it.

COLE HAUSER

Strengthening Texas Ties with new Bourbon Line

On the big screen, Cole Hauser is best known for his role as bad boy cowboy Rip Wheeler on the hit Western drama, Yellowstone. The show follows the turbulent saga of the Dutton family ranching empire as they defend their way of life at all costs, with Cole’s character often leading the charge. But off screen, Cole is more than

“There’s a big bourbon culture here, we appreciate that, love it and look forward to sharing our bourbon with Texas.”

an actor. He’s a coffee and bourbon connoisseur who is expanding his rugged brand into Texas. Recently, he’s helped launch a new bourbon whiskey that pays homage to generations of working cowboys.

Dubbed Lazy K Bar, the award-winning straight bourbon whiskey once available only in Montana, the setting for Yellowstone, is now available to Texas whiskey lovers and fans of the show.

“There’s a big bourbon culture here,” Cole said. “We appreciate that, love it and look forward to sharing our bourbon with Texas.”

Lazy K Bar draws its name from the Lazy K Bar Ranch in Montana, one of the oldest cattle ranches

in the state. The whiskey is a partnership between Cole, David Leuschen, owner of Lazy K Bar Ranch in Montana, and Britt West, a 25-year beverage industry veteran and VP of Spirits at Gallo. Bourbon lovers can now pick up a bottle of Lazy K Bar Whiskey in select Spec’s Wine, Spirits & Foods and other retailers across Texas.

Lazy K Bar is aged at least eight years in Kentucky inside charred new oak barrels to create a complex, memorable flavor. At 92 proof, it’s an incredibly smooth mix of caramel, toffee and aged honey. Each sip is a sweet balance of malted grain and sweet spices that warms the body. Cole calls it

“perfection” saying his favorite way to enjoy Lazy K Bar is neat, without mixers or additions.

“I like a smooth, easy finish,” Cole said. “One that doesn’t kick you in the mouth. This one, really, I think we knocked it out of the park.”

Lazy K Bar is Cole’s second business foray into the beverage market in Texas. His first being Free Rein Coffee, a collaboration between several entrepreneurs and longtime San Angelo coffee roasters. Free Rein supports military charities and offers discounts to first responders, military, teachers and medical providers.

While Cole is most known for his Yellowstone role, Hollywood is in his blood. His great-grandfather was Harry Warner, one of the founders of Warner Brothers Studios. Two of his grandfathers were writers, his father, Wings Hauser, was an actor and his mother, Cass Warner, was the founder of the Warner Sisters production company. Cole has starred in dozens of films including Dazed and Confused, Good Will Hunting and, The Ritual Killer.

Aside from sharing his coffee and bourbon, Cole says he enjoys spending time in Texas filming, visiting friends and family. His son attends

“I hope they drink the whole season with Lazy K Bar, you know, it’s an emotional season and they might need a little bourbon.”

Texas Christian University and, last year Cole appeared at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to visit with fans. The Yellowstone universe, which was created by Texas native Taylor Sheridan, has often used Texas as the backdrop for its storyline to unfold.

“Texas has been kind of a second home,” Cole said. “I get along well with your values and your beliefs down here.”

With the final episodes of Yellowstone premiering next month, it’s a fitting time to pick up a bottle of Lazy K Bar, settle in with a glass and enjoy the show. Cole laughed at the idea and suggests fans might need more than a glass.

“I hope they drink the whole season with Lazy K Bar,” he said. “You know, it’s an emotional season and they might need a little bourbon.”

SER VI NG UP SOUP

Fall’s most notable comfort meal

CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP

This hearty chicken noodle soup is the perfect comfort food that is packed with nutritious goodness. This pairs perfectly with homemade beer bread or a sourdough loaf.

INGREDIENTS:

• 8 cups chicken broth (add more if desired)

• Whole fryer chicken, cut in chunks or shredded

• 5 celery stalks, sliced

• 8 carrots, sliced

• ½ onion diced

• 4 tablespoons butter

• 1 teaspoon italian seasoning

• ¼ cup half and half (optional)

• 1 package egg noodles

• Salt and pepper to taste

• DIRECTIONS:

In a large stock pot, add 8 cups of chicken broth. Dice carrots, celery and onion and add to the broth. Bring to a boil, and reduce to medium heat until the vegetables are soft. In the meantime, skin and cube 1 whole fryer chicken and add to the stock pot. Next, add egg noodles (frozen Reames homemade egg noodles are my favorite) and let boil until noodles are cooked. Add butter, half and half, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Simmer on low until ready to serve.

TOMATO BASIL SOUP

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 cans diced tomatoes

• 2 ½ cups vegetable broth

• ½ cup heavy whipping cream

• 1 onion, diced

• 3 cloves minced garlic

• 3 tablespoons olive oil (or alternatively, 1 stick butter)

• ½ cup chopped fresh basil

• Salt and pepper to taste

This classic tomato basil soup is easy and quick to make and is the perfect way to get the rustic, tangy and savory flavors of this italian dish.

DIRECTIONS:

Toss the butter or olive oil in the pan. Add onion, and saute until the onion is translucent and soft. Add minced garlic, and saute for 2 minutes. Next, add canned tomatoes and simmer. Transfer to a blender, and puree until smooth. Add the fresh basil and heavy cream. Transfer mixture back to the pan to thoroughly heat, and salt and pepper to taste. Top with fresh parmesan and chopped basil, and serve with toasted italian bread.
