Love letter to the guys!
"Creativity is seeing what others see and thinking what no one else ever thought." — Albert Einstein
Welcome to our June "Men's" Issue and Happy Father's Day to our favorite fellas!
How does the old saying go? "Behind every great man stands a great woman" but in this case I've come up with a new saying. "Behind every creative man probably stands a career that he outgrew, a dead-end job or a meaningless part of his life." Thankful for all of us in the world, those creative men bravely embarked upon a new journey, took a different path and chased their passions instead of a paycheck.
In this issue, we tell the stories of several visionary men in our community and how they have impacted our lives. In our Joie de Vivre story, you will find an artist, a restaurateur, a movie trailer producer and a distillery owner - The Breakfast Club remastered 2024!
Check out a couple of photography and art exhibit opportunities you will not want to miss as well as uncover the works of our cover story Texas Hill Country artist, Ray Hadaway, painter of the infamous The Donkey Rodeo.
We give the gift of travel to our Dads for Father's Day. Moon River Ranch spans over 500 acres including a safari experience right here in Texas. Located near Waco, it's not too far for a weekend getaway and the perfect guys' trip or father/son getaway.
We've got it all, from musicians to concerts as we congratulate Jeff Young and his promotion to CEO of The Cynthia Mitchell Pavilion. Don't miss Nick Adamo, Austin-based musician, who you can catch in and around Austin and sometimes here in The Woodlands!
And as a special treat, we got the scoop from the wives of two local favorites, Matt Malatesta of VYPE Magazine and Dr. Ryan Comeaux of Comeaux Dental Group.
Cheers to the dads, the husbands, grandfathers and new fathers, sons and brothers - this issue is for you!

THE GUY BEHIND THE UNMISTAKABLE ART WITH A “TEXAS TWIST”
ARTICLE BY TRAVIS HAGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN GEIBEL Meet Ray HadawayBathed in the warm glow of the Texas Hill Country sun, Ray Hadaway wields his paintbrush like a wizard casting spells of joy onto the canvas before him. This Houston-born artist has found his muse amid the wildflowers and rolling terrain, conjuring up a “Contemporary Folk Fusion” style all his own. Though inspired by masters like Van Gogh, Warhol, and Picasso, his whimsical folk renderings have an unmistakable Texas twist. Vibrant brushstrokes seemingly dance across landscapes and stylized portraits, evoking an irresistible sense of happiness with each study of nature’s beauty.
1. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU LOVED CREATING ART? TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR SCHOOLING AND THE EVOLUTION OF YOUR UNIQUE STYLE.
“That’s a good question, that resonates with me quite a bit. When did I “know.” I always had an active imagination as a kid, I especially liked to play games on paper, where I drew characters and objects and interacted with them. I found that my learning style is to actively doodle when I am listening to something I need to retain. The act of drawing and visualizing has a strong impact on me and in general I just like to create as it puts me in a calm and happy state of mind. My mother and father were both artists, I enjoyed being around them, listening to them and watching them be creative. When we moved to the hill country near Luckenbach, Texas, I spent almost every summer day playing in a clear springfed creek making rock sculptures and molding clay collected from the creek banks.”
As an adult Ray realized he had a gift of visualization. “One day my wife and I were looking at a home we were considering purchasing and admired the art and how it was styled. She said she would love a home with some art.
That was it. That was the moment I became an artist. I had a Forest Gump moment, with no formal training I just started painting and painting. In much the same way a musician passionately learns an instrument, I did the same, and became persistent in learning how to paint, adapting the colors and styles I liked to my own tastes and technique. I reflected on my past and realized, I have always been an artist.”
2. I ESPECIALLY LOVE YOUR DONKEYS. THE FIRST PAINTING I SAW WAS THE DONKEY RODEO. IT MADE ME SMILE, STUDY IT AND THEN SIT BACK AND JUST ADMIRE THE COMPOSITION AND HOW HAPPY IT MADE ME. HOW DO PEOPLE RESPOND TO YOUR WORK?
“Thank you, that painting kind of has two names. I released it as Donkey Rodeo and now I call it Donkey Sunset, but it’s the same painting. Generally, the responses I get are on par with what you mentioned. It makes people smile and gives a bit of lighthearted energy to the viewer.”
3. WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE COMMISSIONED PAINTING YOU HAVE EVER DONE?
“A unique commission I recently completed is called Hare and Prickly Pear, which features a jackrabbit jumping over prickly pear with the sun beaming diamonds of colorful light down. It’s a very large mixed-media piece framed in birch. Sometimes, like with this commission, the patrons put together a little dinner party to celebrate the completion, and though I don’t expect it, I have found these celebrations to be the icing on the cake.”
4. TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEXT CHAPTER.
“Right now, feels like the next chapter is to continue to be creative and build art that is identifiable as a “Ray”. It’s now possible to reach a larger audience than the former well-known artists dreamed about. For that reason, I can share this journey in real time. I believe my art is an inner reflection of my heart, and as long I remain true to that, the possibilities are endless. I’m fortunate to have good friends like the owners of Richard Schmidt Jewelry and Melissa’s Art Shop, in Round Top, Texas, who represent my art year-round. In addition to that I have a current show in the fabulous Lockhart, Texas at Commerce Gallery.”
With a warm smile, Ray leans back, surveying his latest vibrant landscape rendering the iconic rolling hills and bright wildflowers of the Texas Hill Country. His brushstrokes are bold, capturing the rustic charm with a stylized, primitive flair.
“Art should make you feel something,” he says, “For me, that’s the pure joy of this beautiful place and the profound love for my wife Meredith - my endless muse and inspiration for picking up the paintbrush again.”
Ray’s heartfelt works have struck a chord far beyond the Lone Star State’s borders, with commissions arriving from across the globe - the Netherlands, Chile, London, and Mexico.
However, he remains humble about his growing reputation. “If I can share that feeling of hope, sunshine, and happy simplicity through my paintings, well, I’d say I’m one fortunate fella.” As our interview concludes, Ray heads back outside to his easel, dripping brush in hand. The Hill Country’s kaleidoscope of colors awaits - a boundless source of inspiration for this gentleman artist’s charming, uplifting vision.
Girl Talk
BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE WIVES OF TWO COMMUNITY FAVORITES!
In the words of Kelly Malatesta on Matt. Have you ever seen the movie, Benjamin Button?
My husband is a modern-day Benji Button, getting younger as we all get older.
He could be the oldest teenager in Houston, knowing the inside and outs of all social media and who is trending in the world of local sports and reality TV. He talks teenager... the language.
He started a venture 20 years ago as a co-founder of VYPE Magazine, which has become the Sports Illustrated of Texas high school sports. So, his target audience is high school athletes, fans, coaches and parents. I really don't follow too much of his day-to-day. I see him on Social Media or on TV, but that is his lane... not mine.
We met in college at LSU, which is an entirely different story, and we still try and act like college students as we go to football games – home and away – every season.
We have nicknamed him "Baby Jesus" because as an only child, he did no wrong... in his parents' eyes, but we know better. His childhood home was where the action was, and it has been the same with our three kids. Countless parties and game watches can break out at a moment's notice. He shatters the definition as an introverted only child. He thrives in social environments and loves the energy of a crowd of friends and family.
A vacation? No relaxation. He drags everyone around from activity to activity as we all roll our eyes behind his back. From snow skiing to wake-surfing to golf to concerts to comedy clubs to sporting events... it never ends.
He loves his kids. I mean, loves. And he does like to give them countless nuggets of advice. He loves his own advice and is shocked when they don't take it. It doesn't end there. He gives advice to all of their friends. Same result.
But, Matt Malatesta is a vibe, just ask him.
Matt with his wife Kelly and their kiddos
Getting the whole family together for family pics is no easy task!
In the words of Julie Comeaux on Ryan.
Ryan Comeaux, aka the man the myth the legend, the Mayor or "Slo" to many. Growing up as a cajun down the bayou in Thibodaux, Louisiana, Ryan grew up with two loving parents and two younger sisters. As a Catholic boy, he attended a Catholic High School where he met many friends and was voted class favorite and class comedian. (Go figure those awards would relate to the rest of his life!)
In high school, he got into a car accident and broke his shoulder (resulting in no more sports) so he picked up a paintbrush and realized he had an artistic talent. This natural talent inspired him to think about using his hands for his future and after shadowing a few dentists and orthodontists, he set his sights on becoming a dentist.
Ryan and I met at LSU in college. After college, Ryan attended LSU Dental School in New Orleans. During his time at dental school, we got married in the summer of 1999. A year after getting married, Ryan graduated and two weeks after graduation we found out we were having triplets! Oh boy - this is when our crazy life began!
Our boys were born in 2001 and they were certainly "Daddy’s boys." Ryan jumped right into the parenting role while simultaneously building his career as a dentist. He was involved with coaching on many of their teams. He was and still is such a proud dad to our three boys who are now 22!
Ryan’s ideal weekend would be sleeping in, getting in some sort of sweat, spending a few hours doing something like golf or basketball with his boys and dinner with the family. He absolutely loves all sports but mostly LSU, Saints, Texans, Rockets and the Astros. Skiing or beaching with the family and friends is his ideal vacation!
Ryan absolutely LOVES The Woodlands. We moved here in 2006 from Mandeville, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina devastated the New Orleans area. He supports many charities in the community including Interfaith of The Woodlands, HOPE, Clean Water Climb and all of the local schools and sports teams in the area.
Now that Ryan and I are "empty nesting" we spend more time connecting through walks with our dogs, Bear and Hazel, and traveling. Life is good!
The Light Fantastic
THE WOODLANDS PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB
GEARS UP TO GLOW
ARTICLE BY ANNETTE PALMER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOAN TILTON, KATHY CRAVEN, ROBIN VAN PELT, ANN T. GREENE
I recently spoke to Kathy Craven, a member of The Woodlands Photography Club, about how a midnight opportunity to shoot some classic cars resulted in a series of stunning photographs!
Using a light painting technique, the final images are reminiscent of “op art”, the art of the optical illusion. In this instance, the movement of artificial light creates shapes and illusions in the dark, as well as midair, suspended sculptural formations and graffiti-style markings. The results of moving LED lights are reminiscent of neon signs, popping with the brightest colors and dancing with an organic, rhythmic fluidity.
Kathy tells me “It’s called “light painting”. What you’re doing is using LED lights or any light source, and you set your camera to long exposure, so that as the camera is taking the picture, it takes so many slides together it actually erases the person who is walking with the light. It’s fun, you never know how it’s going to turn out sometimes, you have to take a lot of photos to get the right effect. It has a lot to do with the light, how much light you have or don’t have.”
“Nighttime photography is always difficult,” Kathy tells me, but this was such a fun event that around 12 members showed up with their cameras to capture the moments. Kathy was previously a watercolor artist and her introduction to photography was taking reference photos for her paintings.
I spoke to Dan Love, a collector of classic cars and the owner of the 2011 Ford Mustang, Shelby
GT500, featured in the photographs. This stylish, powerful car is red and has a white racing stripe on the side, with an interior finished in black and white leather. Dan did not partake in the project but has previously enjoyed photography as a hobby.
Joan Tilton is a former president of The Woodlands Photography Club and one of the participants in the light play event. If you are interested in joining a photography group in the area, Joan suggests -“There are two clubs in The Woodlands, The Woodlands Camera Club which meets at The Methodist Church, and The Woodlands Photography Club which meets at the Community Center. Both clubs originated from Club 35 a camera club in the early 1980’s! Club 35 had very few members but met regularly, had a few contests and eagerly learned from one another! Because we shot film in those days, our local camera store, The Shutterbug, developed and printed our film and worked with us in many ways! Fast forward to our digital world today, the interest in photography has boomed not only with highly technical and expensive cameras, but with Smartphones as well!”
Currently 120+ members strong, The Woodlands Photography Club offers members workshops with visiting professional photographers, field trips, monthly inspirational photo prompts, pop-up photo opportunities as well as classes and guidance and an annual exhibition and competition. They have their own Facebook page and website – thewoodlandsphotographyclub.com

EXPERIENCE ART FOR THE SENSES WITH “PERIWINKLE” AT CITY PLACE
THE COLOR CONDITION
The “Periwinkle” art installation hits all the feels and is superbly sensational!
I met with artists Marianne Newsom and Sunny Sliger, namely “The Color Condition”, to visit their fantabulous “Periwinkle” installation at City Place. A riot of colorful recycled textiles
The Color Condition work can be enjoyed in environments such as public parks and music festivals. “Periwinkle” will be repurposed into another event.
Inspired by the wonder of childhood and children’s games like Candyland, as well as literary classics, Peter Pan,

which have been woven, knitted, crocheted, torn and tied to create the most colorful, tactile, sensory public art experience around. The installation spans the length of the bridge crossing the water, as well as the meandering walkways and pergolas in the area, yoga groups practice sun salutations and children celebrate birthday parties, with this joyous myriad of colors and textures as their canopy.
Marianne told me, “Our work has always been very playful and celebratory; it’s about cultures and times and color movement, so we try to incorporate that. City Place came to us and wanted to do an activation for the space and how people were engaging in it. The entrance piece is all lit up at night and it’s just a beacon of color, there are light poles which you can walk beneath, and then across the bridge.”
The recycled components, consisting of back stock and dead stock materials that would have gone to landfill, are disassembled and reimagined into other installations across the country.
Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Marianne explained, “How the landscape is set up, there are all the pathways, made us think about children’s games, putting the fantastical with the commonplace to give that juxtaposition of capturing a child’s sense of wonder.”
Igniting memories in the young at heart as well as the young in years. This installation is multidimensional, kindling the senses appreciated by all age groups, it’s also appealing to the visually impaired; the feel and touch of the different textures, burlap and AstroTurf, as well as the sounds of the elements whirling through the hanging strips of caution tape and torn cellophane.
“Periwinkle” is the first in a series of art installations and permanent pieces at City Place, formerly Springwoods Village, a sustainable, forward-thinking and dynamic hub for business, leisure and living located at the axis of the Grand Parkway, Hardy Toll Road and Interstate 45. Spanning 2,000 acres, protected forests and natural

ecosystems coexist beautifully within an architecturally significant environment that has attracted major employers along with a daytime workforce approaching 20,000. Two residential enclaves, and several luxury apartment communities, will soon include a multitude of new single and multifamily housing options. Miles of trails connect an array of amenities, including three Marriott hotels, a 150acre nature preserve, Movie dine-in theater, Fitness club, The Market – Houston’s first LEED Certified multi-tenant retail development – and a 60-acre, mixed-use urban core that frames a programmed, waterfront plaza and park. “Periwinkle” is presented by Houston-based Weingarten Art Group. Principal, Lea Weingarten, commented, “The City Place team is inspired by the simple premise that some of the most intriguing art may be experienced in everyday life, outside the confines of a museum or gallery. The beauty of this sustainable community has created an incredible canvas to curate a unique vision that complements its multi-dimensional character and vibrancy.” thecolorcondition.com
father’s day SAFARI!
BOOK A RELAXING FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND AT MOON RIVER RANCH!
ARTICLE BY HEATHER DAVIS
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY MOON RIVER RANCH
Just outside of Waco, nestled on the Brazos River hides a stunning stretch of land called Moon River Ranch.
In 2019, the owner, Sam Mahrouq, was on the lookout for a relaxing place he could go to when looking for a break from his main business venture. After finding Moon River Ranch, previously owned by famous cosmetic dentist Dr. Ritchie Beougher, Sam decided that this was what he would call paradise.
From there, he decided that more people should experience the beauty and has been expanding the property ever since! Not only is this ranch absolutely stunning, but the tranquility is unmatchable! So, with Father’s Day quickly approaching,
all the activities and serenity offered by Moon River Ranch will guarantee to provide not only a relaxing but extremely enjoyable gift for any nature-loving father!
Speaking of activities, the ranch truly has everything you could think of! Just some of the activities offered are river fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, biking, archery, skeet shooting, ATV rental on a 5-mile trail, and of course, the exciting animal safari tour!
Now, to the most anticipated and popular activity at Moon River Ranch, the safari! Sam, the kind-hearted, animal-loving owner takes pride in his animal oasis! Having gone to Africa, Sam went on a safari and fell in love with it! “It was ingrained in my mind! I loved what I was seeing and I always wanted to bring that to Texas!”
All the animals are free to roam and graze on roughly 300 acres of land within the 550 acres of the ranch. On that land are roughly 400 pecan trees which, naturally, become a source of food for the animals. As a matter of fact, Sam loves the animals so much that they even have names! By far, my favorite is Edgar the peacock!
Riding in a military-grade Hummer, you’ll experience the roughly 500+ animals and 30 species up close and personal living their best life and interacting in their own nature! Some of the animals you might encounter are camels, zebras, antelope, long horns, llamas, bison, wildebeests, and of course peacocks!
Truly, this is a one-of-a-kind experience that cannot be summed up or even given full glory through a single article. If you
don’t book for Father’s Day then consider a fun family vacation or a guy’s bachelor trip. Moon River Ranch offers a large variety of packages if you can’t decide what you want to do! Of course, all of their activities can be added al a carte if something seems exceptionally interesting!
There are not only activities but also rich history for the history-loving dads! The chapel and The Classic Yellow
Hotel seen on the property were actually relocated from an old western town and some of the other lodges have antique signs from West Texas!
Aside from smaller lodges for fatherand-son trips, Moon River Ranch has a giant master penthouse lodge that sleeps 50! No matter the size of your group or party, there is always a sliver of paradise to escape to in Moon River Ranch!
Make sure to keep up with Moon River Ranch through their social media outlets and their website, moonriverranch.com, to find promotional deals coming up for Father’s Day! Contact them with any questions at info@moonriverranch.com. When you have a group of people who love the ranch as much as Sam and his team do, then you’ll absolutely fall in love with Moon River Ranch! It truly is the best-kept secret in Texas!

Following the dreams of four visionary men and their lust for life
ARTICLE BY ANNETTE PALMER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEX WOOD /PROVIDED
Interviewing four entrepreneurs has been incredibly insightful, their ambition and work ethic are unshakable, through the stamina and the grit, their stories are unique and an inspiration to us all. I spoke to four go-getters, passionate about music, art, food and drink, who are making it their business to succeed.
Enrique Orioli Costa Fina
Family is at the heart of Enrique Orioli’s world. As a child, spending time in the kitchen cooking with his grandmother, Nonna Elda, ignited a lifelong passion for cuisine. He tells me, “Thanks to my grandmother, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and inspiration when it comes to the world of food. She has been an invaluable influence on my culinary journey, and I am forever grateful for the lessons she has taught me.”
Enrique began working at the first family restaurant when he was 16. His grandparents had just opened Via Emilia Restaurant, and it was his introduction to the world of hospitality. Located on Cypress Creek Parkway then later relocating to its existing location in The Woodlands. The family of restaurants has now grown to five, with the most recent addition being the beautiful Costa Fina located in Creekside. “Each restaurant possesses a unique character that distinguishes it from the others, yet they all share a common set of values that distinguish them as excellent dining establishments,” Enrique explained. The latest addition is wonderful for family, offering a great menu for everyone, as well as a super patio area where it’s ok to bring the family dog along too if you choose.
Running five restaurants is no mean feat and Enrique told me that to simplify his day he creates routine plans to prioritize tasks, creates lists of daily goals and affirmations and stays hydrated to maintain a clear mind and keep his energy levels up. The occasional cup of espresso also gives an extra boost! To wind down, he loves to spend time with his loved ones, go for a walk and surround himself with nature. He also loves to listen to podcasts and music to shift his focus to his own thoughts and feelings.
The Orioli Restaurant Family believes in giving back to the community and supports countless charitable organizations, Save The Children, Make-A-Wish, No Kid Hungry, Autism Speaks, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, The Pangea Network and The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, to name but a few. “We are committed to supporting these organizations and many more in their mission to make a positive impact on society,” Enrique states.
In addition to Via Emilia and Costa Fina, a visit to Marcoza Trattoria in Creekside, Terra Vino on Research Forest and the beautiful Azzuro, which boasts a lakeside location in Hughes Landing, is a must!

Left page: Four Visionary MenChazz “Fiyastarta” Padilla Epicenter Music
Chazz “Fiyastarta” Padilla is no stranger to the music industry, as a kid, he was signed to Arista Records and had a #5 billboard hit with an anthemic Latin house track. He has established his award-winning company, Epicenter Music, providing music for movie trailers, commercials and TV, in Hollywood and around the globe. Clients include Amazon Prime, Hulu, Warner Brothers Entertainment, Sony Pictures and an endless selection of TV channels. “My main thing is creating music, and I love producing music in different genres.” He says. Inspired by the authentic sounds of early hip hop led to him recording the trailer music for Gran Turismo, and later, 21 Bridges and Maradona. Chazz tells me “I did a lot of rap and hip hop, then I fell into dance music, EDM, Latin music and I always loved scary music, so I do a lot of horror music too.” Favorite inspiring movie scores include classics, The Shining and Halloween, Epicenter Music has an entire division for horror, namely Deranged Muzic. “The trailer for Resurrection won one of the biggest awards in the industry, The World Trailer Award,
for the best trailer music design and trailer music for North America. Chazz is also the music director for the prestigious Golden Trailer Awards, for 2023 and 2024.
Working from a home studio in the Spring area, everything produced goes through his laptop, Chazz studied recording engineering and is an expert in mixing and mastering. “I have a really powerful laptop… I use that as my main rig and plug it into a screen monitor….. it’s also my mobile rig and I can put it into my backpack and travel, so I have my full studio with me everywhere I go.”
Believing in life that you must be relentless, Chazz tells me “This is what I do best, with this stuff I’m on top of the world”.
Chazz’s favorite thing to do locally is to attend some of the many concerts at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. His favorite band Depeche Mode, was the inspiration for him to buy his first synth!
Top: Chazz “Fiyastarta” Padilla Bottom: Four entrepreneurs, four visionariesFrancisco Andres Carrion
Artist
When we think of watercolor paintings we tend to think of delicate florals, and gentle landscapes, but Francisco Andres Carrion has taken watercolor to a different level with his industrial renderings of oil and gas industry-themed paintings. These works are a blend of values, the lights and darks of moody skies and deep water, heavy machinery and the splash of high visibility overalls and lifeboats. The people in the paintings keep it real, and we are drawn to an understanding of the danger of the work and the harsh conditions endured for our daily comforts.
Francisco’s artistic expertise is thanks to his father. An oil painter who studied art in the 1960’s and created modern geometric works. Francisco would spend time in his studio, where a group of his father’s contemporaries would gather in the evenings. He was able to experiment with oils and inks and whatever was around the studio, but eventually concentrated on watercolors due to their practicality and versatility.
With a background in the oil and gas industry Francisco’s visits to oil rigs and industrial plants fuel his current work. After pinning some of his paintings on his office wall, commissioned pieces for the oil giants followed, paintings of oil rigs, tankers, and the people of the industry were presented as awards and gifts for lifetime achievements, milestones and retirements.
Describing his work as traditional realism with some expressionistic strokes Francisco tells me, “I start with a very thin layer in the background and then build up from there, the drawing is suggested drawing and then you mostly draw with your brushes” YouTube documentaries of his process and style are being finalized now and will be available to view in the near future on his website industrialfineart.net

Fishing trips to Galveston with his son is how Francisco likes to relax, he is a true lover of water in both his business life and free time.
When it comes to buying local we don’t generally think of whisky, gin and vodka, but allow me to introduce Kyle Wray of Avonak, a local distiller, manufacturing small, handmade, craft batches of beautiful elixirs, right here on our doorstep!
Kyle was raised in Napa Valley, where his grandparents owned a small, traditional winery; once he left the area, his interest in local, craft-made spirits continued to grow. Traveling through Austria, Germany and The Netherlands, he was inspired by the loyalty and development of organic, local resources utilized by the breweries and distilleries he visited. After talking to master distillers and industry professionals, his award-winning company, Avonak, was launched in 2015.
Working closely with local investors with international backgrounds makes for a diverse foundation, each appreciating different flavors and a distinctive feel and quality. Avonak's branding is modern, contemporary and fresh, with an aura of purity, which matches their aesthetic and approach. Their location at 22131 Rothwood Rd, Ste 402, Spring, 77389 offers tours, tastings and cocktails. You can create your own custom-flavored vodkas for memorable birthdays, achievements or other milestone events, or just for the fun of it! Bottles are available to purchase and take away!
Avonak products are available in many local liquor stores as well as bars and restaurants, if you ask for something local, they’ll likely suggest something from the Avonak range. The products are named after local spots, “Fifty9” and “Eye10” gins, as well as “Post Oak” Bourbon, Avonak, being the area where the distillery is located.
Future range additions include rum, flavored bourbons, a single malt and an agave spirit! Follow Avonak on social media to keep up with their ever-increasing selection.
Childhood dreams, ambitions and influences have really played their part in the foundations of these four entrepreneurs, now growing successful businesses in the things we enjoy, the arts, culture, food and drinks, and we are admirable that they followed their hearts, and just love that they’re so local!
Kyle's favorite part of his practice is developing new flavors, he has created several different gins, and his sales team is more than happy to taste his new blends. His personal favorite cocktails are whisky or gin sours.
Supporting local is at the core of Avonak, Kyle recommends that we “shop locally, spread the word, buy gift cards, leave reviews and engage on social media”. Avonak also offers some great deals that help local charities!
He emphasized - “Quality isn’t just a goal – it’s our standard”.

JEFF
YOUNG SITS DOWN WITH US TO SHARE SOME PERSONAL INSIGHT AND WHAT’S TO COME FOR THE WOODLANDS’ FAVORITE VENUE, THE CYNTHIA WOODS MITCHELL PAVILION
Since the gates of the Woodlands Amphitheater opened in 1990, for a star-studded performance by none other than Old Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. Cynthia Woods Mitchell has had a vision to build the premier concert venue in The Woodlands. The Center for the Performing Arts at The Woodlands, a 501(c)3 non-profit (AKA: The Pavilion), was designed in order to achieve the best experience in live entertainment and the performing arts and make the arts accessible to everyone in the community. “We weren’t created for football, basketball or baseball. We were created for the performing arts”, says Jeff Young, who sat down with us recently. He shares a few highlights of his time at Cynthia Woods, favorite moments, and most importantly, what the Pavillion was created to do.
Recently named President and CEO, Jeff has worked at Cynthia Woods for nearly thirty-four years. He started with operations assistant, backstage security and has managed all the things in between. Each position has had its ups and downs. But, the growth of the organization and getting his hands dirty has been the most rewarding part for him. Today, he feels like what makes the Pavilion stand out is the incredible team involved in achieving the mission.
“The Board of Directors / Full-time staff / Supervisors / Event Staff / Law Enforcement, Volunteers and all our Partners. This is a team sport and we have the world’s greatest TEAM.”
In 2017, the Woodforest Club got a major upgrade in order to accommodate the growing and new generations of season ticket holders. An upgrade that made way for some quality artists to pass through. Lining the black staircase of the club is a gallery style photo wall showcasing some notable performances along
with their signed instruments. We asked Jeff about any artist that may stand out to him, for better or worse. He shared a little about Kelly Clarkson, whose friendly smile goes beyond just her bubbly T.V. personality.
“Every time she has played the venue she has a meet and greet opportunity for close to one hundred and fifty people and will honestly and genuinely talk and spend quality time with each and every fan. It’s a class move that is so appreciated by the fans. Really fun and amazing to experience first hand.”
Another area of growth for The Pavilion and its mission is the youth scholarships and kids programs. Jeff adds that he believes kids who are immersed in the arts at a young age have a higher probability of being recognized for academic achievement as they grow up. “To date, The Pavilion, through The Pavilion Partner Scholarship Program has given over $2.2 Million in scholarships to young artists in our community pursuing a degree in the fine arts. We are so proud of the talent and success these students go on to have within the arts community.” For those with young kids, they also offer a Mini Maestros Club. It’s a free and fun way to immerse kids in the arts while attending symphony shows. They receive their own badge, special seats, early gate entry and more. Jeff was able to share with us that for the first time in Pavillion history, all seating at performing arts events (symphonies, ballets, operas, etc.) will be free. According to Jeff, this is an effort to truly make their arts accessible to all in the community.
It was a life-long dream of Cynthia Woods Mitchell to build a world-class concert venue that made the arts accessible to all here in The Woodlands. Since 1990, The Pavilion has seen many improvements, natural disasters, artists, performances, graduations, upgrades, sing-a-longs and so much more. There aren’t many Woodlands lifers who can say they knew the founders of the community and have had a chance to carry on one of their dreams. To know Jeff Young, is to love Jeff Young. Whether you’ve seen him up on stage announcing weather delays (every 30 minutes). Or, running through the Woodforest Club with a walkie-talkie in one hand, saying hi to familiar faces. Always a class act himself, we know that in the hands of Jeff, the best is yet to come for Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.
Volunteer need: Those who are passionate about the arts and have a desire to share that passion with our community. Volunteers help usher, provide kids activities during pre-performance events and raise funds for scholarships.

Smooth Grooves and Soft Rock
Lyricist, guitarist and vocalist Nick Adamo talks influences, feelings and some rules to live by
Musician Nick Adamo’s inspiration came at a Blink 182 and Green Day concert at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. After the show, this 5th grader dashed home and announced that he needed a Fender Stratocaster guitar, he was the first person in his family to play.
Now a full-time singer-songwriter/guitarplayer, Nick describes his style as “soft rock” or “yacht rock”, on the spectrum of beachy surf, 1970’s chilled sounds influenced by The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles and Harry Nilsson. He tells me “I would have loved to have met, George Harrison, to be able to have music as a common point of reference, and to talk about other disciplines, could be quite fascinating.”
Nick attends other gigs regularly but prioritizes his time for writing and working on his own material. “My songs are about people I know and feelings that are familiar to everyone, I try to pull from experience, and really make the emotions obvious through the music, there’s
some autobiographical stuff in there, but also stories which help express that feeling so much clearer,” he tells me. If you look on Nick’s website nickadamo.net , not only can you listen to his material, but the lyrics are right there, alongside the videos.
After suffering a weightlifting accident, which needed major, time-sensitive surgery, he became connected to The Musician Treatment Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded by Dr Alton Barron. The foundation helps professional musicians get access to orthopedic care for upper limb injuries, which prevent them from playing their instruments. Nick organized a benefit concert for them after his recovery and is still greatly involved.
Nick’s rules to live by include “always return the shopping cart and replace the trash bag straight away.”
Special Thanks to Dosey Does and keep your eyes open for more Nick Adamo local shows.

GEORGE MITCHELL, THE WOODLANDS AND THE CRADLE OF TEXAS ROAD
An excerpt about the historic treasure land of our state and nation
George Mitchell, innovator, scholar, philanthropist and friend to man. Among his most magnificent achievements is the founding of the community of The Woodlands in 1974. That community’s preparation for its 50th anniversary in 2024 marks a propitious moment to add yet another bit of magical flair to the lustrous aura of that fabled community: The Woodlands constitutes the anchor of the Cradle of Texas Road , linking with mystical wonder the historic treasure of that road to Metropolitan Houston.
Uniquely immersed in beautiful pines whose scenic wonder reeks of an eternal Spring, The Woodlands is appropriately named. Appropriate also is the name, Cradle of Texas Road , in two respects. The first links to its association with the Texas Republic of 1836 until 1846. From December 14th, 1837, until April of 1846, Montgomery County consisted of all or part of six present counties, Montgomery, Walker, Grimes, Madison, San Jacinto and a little slice of Waller. These mark the context of our Cradle Road.
It was in 1846 that Walker and Grimes became independent. The birth of these two initial counties finds identity with the theme of innovative wonder that is George Mitchell, this through the link of the two counties to the memory of the similarly innovative Sam Houston. It was to Walker County that Sam Houston, the liberator of Texas at San Jacinto, retired to become celebrated in Huntsville’s Oakwood Cemetery. Similarly, the namesake of Grimes County, Jesse Grimes, once ran for lieutenant governor on a ticket with Sam Houston for governor. While marking Sam Houston’s only loss for political office, the reason for the defeat—their then-unpopular stand for national unity-- waxes memorable. The county seat of the Original Montgomery County was the town of Montgomery, the home of Texas’s first
Secretary of State, Charles Stewart, also the designer of our venerated Texas Flag. Madison County took its name from the primary designer of our national constitution and our fourth national president, James Madison, while San Jacinto County rings with memories again of Sam Houston at the great battle of that name. Finally, Waller County history is associated primarily with Sam Houston’s friend, Jared Groce, on whose properties Sam Houston’s Army camped and on which the initial draft of the Texas Declaration of Independence received birth on March 1st, 1836.
The second basis for the name Cradle of Texas Road resides in the memory of Renè-Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle, also like Sam Houston, a man of adventure of the highest order. The Frenchman La Salle’s trip to the Rio Grande River during the winter of 1685-86 set the stage for that river marking the southern boundary of Texas, while his death was near Navasota in 1687 in later Grimes County, in our Cradle Road area. More significantly, it was the Spanish hunt for La Salle that led them to establish the mission San Francisco de las Tejas; Tejas constitutes the Spanish name for Texas. It is this birth process which gives rise to the name “Cradle of Texas”.
Thus does incorporation of The Woodlands into the dramatic luster of historic Montgomery County incorporated the acclaim to a whole region, a historic treasure-land of our state and nation. Two grand conventions featuring key members of the Cradle Road area, both with representation of the State Historical Commission, have been convened to date, first in Conroe, then in Montgomery.
Formal linkage of The Woodlands with the Cradle of Texas Road expands even further the reach and legend associated with the grand innovator, George Mitchell.

Painting has always been a way for me to record memories, like a visual journal. I love to take photos as part of the process, for colors and compositions, feelings and the essence of the moment. Sometimes my photos say enough without their elements being translated into paintings, and I enjoy them for what they are. I don’t usually share my photos but am delighted that 3 have been selected for “The Big Show” at Lawndale Art Center, Houston, it’s the 40th Exhibition which makes it even more special! These photos of reflections of trees in water offer a new persperctive and were taken around The Woodlands area.
Our Favorite Bourbons

The “Best Bourbon” Is Truly Up To The Individual and Occasion Under
ARTICLE BY ANTHONY ADAMSWe were recently asked to suggest the Best Bourbon under $150 and as I reflected on my list of favorites, providing a single answer wasn’t as straightforward as it appeared. Think of it like this. If we asked 100 people in our community what their favorite restaurant is—the answers would be varied based on the individual’s personal palate or even the moment you asked them in!
Here is our list of favorites that will have you covered at any price point and occasion.
BLANTON’S SINGLE BARREL BOURBON
Blanton’s is recognizable on sight due to the round bottle with a brass horse and jockey for a stopper. Taken from the center-cut or middle sections of the famous Warehouse H. The taste profile is sweet, with notes of citrus and oak. The creamy vanilla nose is teased with caramel and butterscotch, all underscored by familiar baking spices such as clove, nutmeg, or cinnamon.
— BlantonsBourbon.com ($100-$150)
BASIL HAYDEN’S RYE BOURBON –AGED 10 YEARS
In a sea of cask-strength offerings, Basil Hayden’s stays true to its 80 proof roots. The high rye content of its mash bill charges the nose and palate with notes of caraway and spice, while 10 years in the barrel have added leather and an attractive nuttiness. If you aren’t looking for high proof, this is a remarkable bourbon.
— BasilHaydens.com ($75-$100)
PINHOOK ‘BOURBON WAR’ VERTICAL SERIES 5 YEARS
Pinhook pulls 150 barrels from a special lot to create this straight bourbon whiskey with a lively nose of butterscotch,
cinnamon stick, licorice, and vanilla. These aromas set the stage for a robust palate of cherry, chocolate, toasted brown sugar, and chicory. With the additional 5th year of age, what was tropical fruit transitions to darker fruit flavors and what was brighter candy is now rich and caramelized; hints of smoke now start to appear for the first time.
— PinhookBourbon.com ($75-$50)
EAGLE RARE 10 YEAR
Eagle Rare 10 Year lives somewhat in the shadow of its 17-yearold elder sibling, but don’t let that shy you away. This is a sweet and mellow bourbon with definite signs of maturity and its orange peel and toffee aromas are a little shy, but the palate serves sturdy sweet and spice notes and a toasty finish.
— EagleRare.com ($30-$50)
OLD FORESTER 86 PROOF
While others in Old Forester’s impressive lineup claim the hearts of bourbon geeks (such as the 1920 Prohibition Style), this bottle stands head and shoulders above everything at this proof and price point. It oozes aromatic charm and follows with a palate that is lithe but in no way lacking flavor.
— OldForester.com ($20-$30)
MCAFEE’S BENCHMARK OLD NO. 8
Sometimes you find a $20 laying around or just need a good mixing bourbon. Benchmark Old No. 8 is made at the same distillery as Blanton’s and the ever-coveted Pappy Van Winkle! The nose bears caramel notes with a delicate stone-fruit backdrop. A robust and sturdy palate with some fine leather notes mingling with dry tobacco, a touch of oak, and a hint of dried cherries. The finish is smooth and calming.

Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.

Get fit for equipment.
If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:

Practice your short game every day.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
