Thanks for being a great partner, Springfield!
If we stay true to who we are, life begins to slow down. We reconnect with nature—and the nature of our own authenticity. Not in getting everything right, but in staying open to trying again.
“So, if you get it wrong, you’ll get it right next time, next time.” – Rafferty
This July, we’re leaning into exploration—not just travel, but the kind that brings you closer to who you are. Sometimes that means wandering a new path, or reimagining your everyday. Other times, it means being still long enough to feel something shift.
We’ve been watching Star Wars: Andor, and it reminded me: imagination is one of the most expansive ways we explore. It takes us to distant galaxies but reflects our own courage, identity, and belonging where something real stirs inside you.
In this issue, we bring you Horses of Hope—a story of strength and quiet healing found through connection with animals and open skies. You’ll also wander through Sud Touraine, a region of France where life unfolds in warm light, old stone, and lingering afternoons. There’s something powerful in slowness.
And in Healing Hands Skin Therapy, we spotlight how care and touch can restore not just skin—but confidence and calm. It’s a quiet, essential kind of glow.
We live in a world where busy is the baseline—but when everything is always on , what are we missing?
For me, it’s about being intentionally unbusy, even for a few hours:
• Unbusy for the peace.
• Unbusy for the purpose.
• Unbusy for the people.
This month, explore what brings you back to yourself—whether it’s a story, a horse, a warm evening, or the simple ritual of taking care of your skin.
Because what you seek—you just might find.
With love-

INSIDE A MISSOURI NONPROFIT WHERE HEALING BEGINS WITH HORSES
In the quiet pastures just outside Rogersville, Missouri, something transformative unfolds. It doesn’t involve fluorescent lights, waiting rooms, or clipboards. It begins with the sway of a horse’s back, the steady rhythm of hooves, and the warm breath of an animal trained not just to carry—but to connect through a safe relationship.
At Horses of Hope, therapy isn’t about control. It’s about relationships.
Founded in 1997, Horses of Hope provides equine-assisted hippotherapy services, mental health services, therapeutic riding services and equine assisted learning services for individuals of all ages, with physical, mental and/or emotional challenges. With two locations—in Missouri and Kansas—the nonprofit now serves hundreds of participants and their families each year.
From the beginning, the focus at Horses of Hope hasn’t only been on working with quality
therapy horses and other farm animals—it’s been on the individuals and their families they help through equine experiential therapy.
“Some kids shut down in a clinic,” says Marge Cheesman, ORT, CTRI, ESMHL. “They’re tired of repetitive motions and being asked to sit still. Out here, everything changes.”
“We’re not here to replace traditional therapy,” she adds. “We’re here to support it—and in many cases, expand what’s possible.”
Children who are anxious, withdrawn, or overstimulated often arrive overwhelmed—and leave regulated, smiling, and upright in the saddle.
“They aren’t always aware of what’s happening in the moment,” says Shelly McColm, MS, LPC, NCC, ESMHL, CTRI, Co-Founder and Executive Director. “But their bodies do.”
At the heart of every session is the horse—an intuitive partner whose movement closely mimics the human gait of walking. A 45-minute session can produce over 2,000 hoof steps eliciting neuromuscular responses from the rider, helping riders develop strength, posture, coordination, and balance.
“We’re not holding them up,” Cheesman explains. “The horse is doing the movement—but the child is doing the work.”
The movement isn’t just physical—it’s regulating. Riders with autism, trauma histories, or sensory integration challenges often experience calm, focus, and connection they haven’t found elsewhere.
Therapy horses at Horses of Hope are specially selected, trained, and supported. Many are retired show horses with the temperament and experience to handle unpredictability.
“It’s like hiring staff,” McColm says. “Not every horse is suited for this kind of work.”
Each horse is carefully matched to the physical and emotional needs of the rider. Some are paired for months. Others rotate depending on the goals of the session.
“Every day is different,” McColm adds. “Not just for the riders or clients—but for the horses, too.”
The horses may be the heart of the program—but they’re not the only ones offering comfort.
Also on the property: a cow who thinks he’s a horse, Lily, the sheep who believes she’s a dog, and Eeyore, a honking miniature donkey who brings serious Eeyore energy to the pasture. Each animal plays its own small role in the healing landscape.
Horses of Hope offers a range of equine-assisted services, all grounded in movement, trust,
relationship development through safety created in the human and animal connection:
• Horses of Hope as a PATH Intl. Premiere Accredited Site
• Therapeutic Riding with PATH Intl.-certified instructors
• Equine-Assisted Mental Health Therapy with licensed mental health professionals
• Equine-Assisted Learning for social-emotional development and personal growth with certified Equine Specialist Facilitators
• Team-Building Sessions for businesses, educators, youth groups, adult groups and community organizations facilitated by highly trained Horses of Hope staff
“The horse teaches us presence and awareness,” McColm says. “They live in the moment—and invite us to do the same.”
The nonprofit is supported by:
• Private pay-fee for services from families
• Public agency partnerships, including CC Links (Christian County)
• Specific Missouri Medicaid programs
• Missouri Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP), which offer 70% tax credits to Missouri businesses that donate, through the Missouri Department of Economic Development
“We’re focused on building something that can stand strong for the next generation, as we continue to bring hope to all.”
While community support has been strong, the focus now is on sustainability for the future.
“We’ve been blessed with support,” McColm says. “Now we’re focused on building something that can stand strong for the next generation, as we continue to bring hope to all.”

A Journey through Sud Touraine
For this issue of Explore, we invited Natalie Ballard of Golden Hour Jewelers to share a glimpse into a lesser-known corner of France that has inspired both her work and her sense of home. Through the vineyards and villages of the Sud Touraine region, she reflects on what it means to discover beauty—in craft, in place and in community.
If you speak to a Parisian, they will surely tell you that Paris is France but speak to any Frenchman and he will tell you quite the opposite. While Paris is the city of eternal light, full of splendor and delight, the lesser-known regions of France are spectacular. Springfield, for example, is an excellent reminder that sometimes, the small towns deep in the center of a country are well worth the detour. The same can be said of the Sud Touraine region of France. It is where we bought our country home three years ago in the small town of Paulmy. A sleepy little village nestled in a valley
that is punctuated by a centuries-old castle and surrounded by its ‘fiefdom’ of small cobble stone houses— our own dating to the year 1600. Approximately two and half hours due southwest of Paris in the region of “Centre-Val de Loire” (France is divided into regions, then further into departments), is the department of Indre-et-Loire. It sits close enough to the prestigious Loire Valley, yet far enough that it does not command the same prices. When driving through this region we noticed a striking familiarity with Tuscany. We would later learn that it is dubbed ‘the Tuscany of France’.
Rolling hills are dotted with small stone villages and cypresses that seem to touch the sky. As we traversed the countryside, we discovered that these rolling hills were also home to excellent, lesser-known varieties of wine and sparkling wines—some favorites are the sparkling Vouvray and Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil, as well as the reds Chinon and Saumur-Champigny. Winery tours are less crowded than burgundy or Bordeaux and have an intimate feel, often with the owners of the domaines giving tours themselves, their love of the land and the grape evident in the way that they care for their vines.
For a memorable meal, try Michelin-starred
Arbore & Sens, cozy Au Comptoir, or classic French fare at Le Prosper. Don’t miss market day strawberries, rotisserie chicken and local cheeses.
The Sud Touraine is also known for its culinary traditions, serving delicious local cheeses (Sainte- Maure-de-Touraine), yogurts and excellent mushrooms from their plentiful caves and forests. Hunting game is also a storied pastime and boar, rabbit and deer are popular winter fare. In the summertime, open air markets are where most French shop for their food. A veritable feast for the senses, the market day in the town of Loches is by far a favorite. The freshest in-season fruits and vegetables are often picked the same day by local farmers.
Small wooden berry baskets are piled high with the tiniest and most deliciously ripe strawberries. A treat for the little ones whilst we walked the streets wandering from stall to stall. Local vendors will take delight in giving you a sample of their cheese, dried meats or bread. No market visit is complete without the roasted farmer’s chicken with potatoes and carrots, which we serve with a salad, baguette and a glass of red wine. Nothing more simple or more delicious.
Much of our time was spent working on our cottage or in the garden but when we weren’t fixing centuries-old windows and doors, we explored the many historical sights the region has to offer. Castles are a particular favorite, and this region has an abundance of these. Smaller, regional castles are excellent places to learn about history, stroll beautiful gardens and view spectacular art up close without the crowds of museums. Many of the larger castles have restaurants on site— there
is truly nothing more blissful than eating lunch with a Renaissance castle as your backdrop. Two favorite Renaissance castles are: Chenonceau and Azay-le-Rideau. Villandry, while not a Renaissance castle, contains a garden that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its sheer size and beauty. You can enjoy fresh vegetables from the gardens in their restaurant when in season.
In addition to castles, you can find the Clos Lucé, the last residence of Leonardo Da Vinci and the site where he is buried nearby in Amboise. Closer still to the cottage was the village of Descartes, so named after the famous French philosopher who graced the enlightenment with “Je pense, donc je suis” (I think, therefore I am). His birth home still stands today.
The French countryside and the Sud Touraine region, like Springfield, is home to some of the kindest, most generous people you will meet. We have made lifelong friends there and had many a neighbor help us in our renovation process. They have housed us, fed us, and helped us, and for that we feel eternally grateful. The townspeople of the Sud Touraine are full of goodwill and are welcoming to travelers who are coming to discover their little corner of lesser-known paradise.
Our journey through Sud Touraine has been one of discovery, beauty, and connection. I hope you’ll explore its quiet charms, too.

This summer, we’re leaning into light, warmth—and the kind of skin that glows because it’s truly cared for. In a season made for movement and sunshine, it’s the perfect time to explore not just new routines, but new ways of thinking about skin health. April Wilkie, founder of Healing Hands Skin Therapy and a trusted skincare professional for over 30 years, shares how to approach your summer skincare routine with strategy, care, and confidence.
“One of the biggest challenges we see in summer is sunscreen—not just skipping it, but using poor-quality formulas or not reapplying often enough,” she says. “People underestimate how much—and how often—they need it. There’s still a lot of misunderstanding around sun safety and the risk of melanoma.”
April Wilkie is the founder of Healing Hands Skin Therapy, with over 30 years of experience in skincare and client education. Known for her personalized, results-driven approach, she helps clients build real, sustainable routines tailored to their skin and lifestyle.
But UV isn’t the only issue. “Heat increases sweat and oil production, which can trap bacteria on the skin and lead to breakouts,” she explains. “We help clients build a summer skincare routine that works for their skin type and lifestyle—something that stays balanced even in heat and humidity.”
When asked how to get glowing skin in summer, she doesn’t hesitate: “Exfoliate—consistently and gently. Surface buildup can prevent that healthy, vibrant layer of skin from coming through.”
Her team helps clients choose exfoliants that match their skin’s needs, so radiance doesn’t come at the cost of irritation.
Exfoliating for radiant skin is one of the most effective ways to maintain a healthy glow—especially in summer, when sweat, SPF, and environmental buildup can dull your natural radiance.
She also recommends smart glow alternatives: “Instead of overexposing your skin, try a mineral bronzer. Ours is clean-beauty focused and gives that sun-kissed look—without damage.”
Summer often calls for subtle shifts. “We might recommend switching to a lightweight moisturizer for summer, or using a more breathable SPF formula,” she says. “Our powder sunscreen for the face—in a refillable brush—is a favorite. It’s easy, effective, and family friendly.”
“Some of our clients have been with us for over 30 years,” she says. “And while aging is a natural part of life, with the right care and consistency, we can keep skin strong, supported, and looking its best. Everyone sees your face—so together, let’s make it the healthiest, most confident version of you.”

The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home!
By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room.
Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the home, house
plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus.
Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends. Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants.
ARTICLE BY SEAN O’KEEFE
Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot.
Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls. No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature and to reconnect with the living world. We all benefit from the additional life that houseplants bring into our homes. In this crazy world of ours, wouldn’t be it nice to return home to your own personal indoor greenspace.
Happy gardening!

The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!
1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag
2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.
3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.
4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.
5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.
6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).
7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Following is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.
*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.
• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*
• 2 Tablespoons lime*
• 2 Tablespoons finely,
chopped cilantro
• ¼ Cup olive oil or avocado oil
• ¼ White onion, finely chopped
• 1 Tablespoon cumin
• Salt and pepper to taste
• ½ Cup parsley, finely chopped
• ½ Cup cilantro, finely chopped
• 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar
• 3 Cloves garlic, minced
• 1 Red chili (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)
• ½ Teaspoon dried oregano
• 1 Teaspoon salt
• 1 Tablespoon lime juice (optional)
Combine all ingredients in a bowl. You can make this in the late morning and let it sit for around 4-6 hours, or you can make it the day before and let the flavors meld overnight in the fridge. Just be sure to take it out and get it to room temp before you serve it, as olive oil hardens in the fridge. Serve over skirt steak or tacos.
• 2 Ears sweet corn
• 10oz. Cherry tomatoes
• ¼ Cup lime juice
• 1 Finely chopped jalapeno or serrano (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)
• ¼ Cup cilantro, finely chopped
• ½ Cup white onion, chopped
• 2 Cloves garlic, minced
• Salt to taste
1. Grill corn, you do not need to soak the corn beforehand.
2. Place corn on the grill (inside their husks) over medium heat turning every few minutes.
3. After 10 to 12 minutes shuck the corn and put the cobs back on the grill for 2-4 minutes rotating frequently to achieve that charred look and flavor.
4. Cut the corn from the cob, place in bowl and add all other ingredients. Let the mixture meld for about an hour and serve with tortilla chips or as a taco garnish.
