March is here, bringing its signature mix of roaring winds and hints of spring warmth—true to the saying, "in like a lion, out like a lamb." It’s a month that keeps us guessing but also promises brighter, warmer days ahead. While we wait for spring to fully bloom, there’s still time to savor the cozy comforts of winter. If you’re craving a hearty, soul-warming meal, turn to page 22 for a chicken pot pie recipe that’s sure to bring warmth to your kitchen and your table.
This issue is all about one thing: home. After all, home is where the heart is—and let’s be honest, where the chaos is too, but that’s part of its charm. For us, home is where we reside with our four daughters, guinea pig S'mores, and our new au pair—because apparently, five females in the house wasn’t enough, so we decided to add one more! My husband Jake jokes that he’s vastly outnumbered and is considering petitioning for a “No Girls Allowed” man cave.
While planning this home issue it occurred to me that my design expertise doesn’t go far beyond rearranging throw pillows and calling it a makeover, but that’s why we called in the experts and packed this issue with gorgeous home photos that will have even the least Pinterest-savvy among us feeling inspired. Whether you’re planning a remodel or simply want to admire picture-perfect kitchens, this edition has something for everyone. Keep it on your coffee table— or at least within arm’s reach—for months (or even years!) to come.
We’re also thrilled to share this month’s City List, where you, our wonderful readers, voted for your favorite home-related businesses in categories like flooring, HVAC, interior design, and more. Turn to page 16 to see which local gems earned the title of Readers’ Choice. Spoiler alert: the competition was fierce, and the winners are nothing short of fabulous. Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram— @bridgewater_somerset_hills—to stay in the loop for future categories.
Thank you for welcoming us into your homes every month. It truly makes our day when we hear from readers who found inspiration or discovered a new local business because of something we published. So don’t be a stranger—drop us a note, tag us in your Instagram stories, or say hi if you see us around town.
Cheers,

ARTICLE BY CHLOE ANDERSON
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 lb cooked chicken (shredded or diced)
• 1 cup carrots, diced
• 1 cup peas (frozen or fresh)
• 1 cup celery, diced
• 1/2 cup onion, diced
• 1/4 cup butter
• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
• 2 cups chicken broth
• 1 cup milk
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• Salt and pepper, to taste
• 2 refrigerated pie crusts
• 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). 2. Cook the vegetables: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions, carrots, and celery. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are softened. 3. Make the sauce: Stir in the garlic powder and flour. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the flour to lightly brown and form a roux. 4. Add liquids: Gradually whisk in the chicken broth and milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Let the mixture cook for about 5 minutes, or until it thickens. 5. Add chicken and peas: Stir in the cooked chicken and peas. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. 6. Prepare the pie crust: Roll out one pie crust and fit it into the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish. Pour the chicken and vegetable mixture into the crust. 7. Top the pie: Place the second pie crust over the filling. Trim any excess dough, then pinch the edges together to seal. Make a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. 8. Egg wash (optional): For a golden finish, brush the top of the crust with a beaten egg. 9. Bake: Place the pie in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and crispy. 10. Cool and serve: Let the chicken pot pie cool for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy the comforting warmth of a homemade classic!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAVATED MEDIA, JOHN COLANERI
From crafting renovations on TV to executing high-profile projects for clients nationwide, Bergen County local John Colaneri’s journey in the design and building industry has been nothing short of remarkable. With more than 20 years of experience, including a decade of high-energy work with HGTV, Colaneri has carved out a niche as both a designer and a television personality. As he continues to shape homes and businesses through his firm, Lilyshea LLC, Colaneri offers a fresh perspective on design, blending creativity with precision. For our Home issue, we sat down with Colaneri to explore his career, creative process, and approach to balancing work and family life.
John Colaneri’s passion for design and architecture began long before his television career. “Early on at Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes, I discovered my love for design and architecture,” he recalls. “My senior year, I took a drafting class, and that really opened my eyes to the world of building and design. But it wasn’t until I worked in construction during college summers that I realized this was something I wanted to pursue professionally.”
After graduating from Penn State University, Colaneri found his footing in construction, working with his cousin and uncle at Brunelleschi Construction, a development company. The company specialized in converting brownstones and older warehouses into high-end condos in Hoboken and Jersey City.
In 2011, Colaneri’s career took an unexpected turn when HGTV approached him to host a show. “I had no idea what I was getting into,” Colaneri laughs, reflecting on his transition into the media world. “But it was a whirlwind, and I ended up filming more than 100 episodes and three digital series in a decade.” His popularity grew, and alongside his cousin, Anthony Carrino, Colaneri became a beloved figure on shows like Kitchen Cousins and Cousins Undercover.
Colaneri’s expertise in both construction and design has given him a distinctive edge when working in North Jersey. While he’s tackled projects in more than 20 states across the U.S., he believes the tri-state area—especially New Jersey—presents unique challenges. “The regulations here can be a nightmare,” he says. “New Jersey has a lot of paperwork that can slow down the process, and the state is full of older homes that often throw you curveballs once you start tearing down walls.”
Despite these hurdles, Colaneri embraces the challenge, knowing each renovation is a chance to bring out the best in a space. “I always tell my clients to have a 20% contingency in the budget because unexpected issues are almost guaranteed,” he adds. “Old homes can hide all kinds of challenges, from outdated wiring to structural problems.”
When designing a space, Colaneri starts by getting to know his clients. “The first step is always determining how the space is going to function,” he explains. “Once I grasp the function, we can start talking about form.” From there, Colaneri gathers inspiration from both the client’s preferences and his own extensive design knowledge, creating mood boards and material samples to guide the process.
“I always tell my clients that while I can give my professional opinion, at the end of the day, it’s their home,” he says. “Design is personal, and trends are fleeting. I want my work to be timeless.”
Colaneri's work with HGTV brought him face-to-face with a world that moved at a pace he had never encountered before. “When you’re filming a show and you have a week to build an entire kitchen, the speed is incredible,” he recalls. “We had to plan everything three months in advance, and once the build began, it was nonstop, 24-hour-a-day effort.”
“Seeing the homeowner’s reaction when he saw his new home for the first time—I’ll never forget it.” - JOHN COLANERI
This fast-paced environment shaped the way he runs his own business today. “Now that I’m focused on my own company, Lilyshea LLC, I’m really focused on upfront planning,” he says. “I make sure all design materials are selected and delivered before we break ground. That way, we don’t have to scramble in the middle of a project.”
One of Colaneri’s most memorable projects came from his time working with The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “We did a complete home renovation in just seven days for a wounded veteran,” he says. “The speed of the build was intense, but the real motivation came from the purpose behind it. We wanted to create a home that was not just functional, but truly comfortable for someone who had sacrificed so much.”
The project not only challenged Colaneri’s construction skills but also touched him personally. “It was an honor to work on a project that would change someone’s life,” he says. “Seeing the homeowner’s reaction when he saw his new home for the first time—I’ll never forget it.”
While Colaneri is known for creating stunning spaces for others, designing his own home presented its own set of challenges. “When you work in design, there are so many ideas you want to try,” he admits. “It can be overwhelming. But when it’s your own space, it’s about finding the balance between what you love and what works.”
For Colaneri, this means blending rustic and contemporary elements to create a home that feels both timeless and personal. “I always tell people that when they design their home, they should aim to make people feel something,” he adds. “Whether it’s love or even dislike— just don’t make it forgettable.”
Like many professionals, Colaneri’s career can be demanding, but he works hard to balance his professional life with his personal life. “Time is the one thing I wish I had more of,” he says. “But I always make sure to prioritize my family. Work doesn’t feel like work because I love what I do, but at the end of the day, my family is what matters most.”
Colaneri’s passion for design is clearly something that runs in the family. “My daughter loves to draw, especially fashion designs,” he says with a smile. “I see a lot of similarities between fashion and design. Trends often overlap, and it’s fun to see her creativity blossom.”
As for what’s next, Colaneri is focused on expanding his commercial construction management business. “The past few years have been busy with major projects like Patel Brothers grocery stores,” he says. “We’re building 30,000-square-foot locations,
John Colaneri is the founder of Lilyshea LLC, a design and construction management firm specializing in commercial and residential projects. which is a completely different challenge from residential projects. I love the challenge, and I’m excited to see these new stores open in the coming years.”
Though he’s already achieved so much, Colaneri remains passionate about the future. “I’m focused on continuing to grow my business, but I’m also always looking for new opportunities to educate and inspire others,” he says. “If I can find more time, I’d love to do even more!”
For John Colaneri, the journey is far from over. With his drive, expertise, and creative vision, he will undoubtedly continue to shape homes, businesses, and even the next generation of design enthusiasts.

FOR JEN LIMING, REAL ESTATE ISN’T JUST A CAREER—IT’S A CALLING ROOTED IN FAMILY TRADITION, DEEP COMMUNITY TIES, AND A UNIQUE SET OF SKILLS HONED OVER YEARS IN TALENT ACQUISITION AND HUMAN RESOURCES.
As a top agent at Kienlen Lattmann Sotheby’s International Realty, Liming has made a name for herself as one of New Jersey’s most trusted real estate professionals. Her impressive list of accolades, including the KL Sotheby’s Market Leader award for 2022, 2023, and 2024, and the NJAR Circle of Excellence Award (Bronze in 2022, Silver in 2023), speaks to her dedication, client-focused approach, and knack for getting results.
What truly sets Liming apart, however, is her ability to blend local expertise with global connections, offering clients a unique advantage in an ever-changing market. Whether it's negotiating a complex deal or guiding a family to their dream home, Liming’s approach is defined by one key principle: understanding her clients’ needs and delivering on them—every time.
ACQUISITION TO REAL ESTATE: A SEAMLESS
"Talent acquisition and HR have been invaluable to my success as a Realtor," Liming says. "In HR, I matched the right person with the right job by understanding their needs and goals. That skill translates perfectly into real estate, where I match the right buyer with the perfect home."
Her ability to listen, understand, and communicate effectively is a cornerstone of her approach. Whether negotiating a contract or guiding a client through the home-buying process, Liming applies the same principles that helped her excel in her former career. "Both fields require strong relationship-building and skilled negotiation," she explains. "It’s all about delivering
results by understanding what people need and helping them achieve their goals."
The decision to transition to real estate was deeply influenced by Liming’s family history in the industry. "My grandmother worked in real estate, and I grew up around it," she recalls. "Watching her thrive as an independent, creative woman made a lasting impression on me. She was my role model."
Liming’s family not only inspired her to pursue real estate, but they also shaped her approach to client relationships. "Her passion for helping people find their forever homes left a lasting mark on me," she says. "Her focus on building relationships and creating meaningful experiences is something I strive to embody in my own work."
For more than a decade, Liming has called Bernardsville home. Her deep knowledge of the town allows her to provide her clients with insights that only a local expert can offer. "Bernardsville is a small town with a big community feel," she says. "From the charming neighborhoods to the walkable downtown and wonderful schools, I know this town inside and out."
Liming’s long-standing commitment to her community is evident through her volunteer work. She has served on the HSA boards for both elementary and middle schools in various roles, chaired Teacher’s Appreciation committees, co-chaired Family Story Night events, and is an active member of the Bernardsville Summer Swim Team Board and Somerset Hills Lacrosse Club Board. Additionally, she sponsors local schools, sports teams, and town events.
"The shop owners here always know your name and your style," Liming adds. "It’s just another example of how close-knit and welcoming this community is."
“I’ve learned that staying composed and solution-oriented can turn even the toughest situations into a success.”
- Jen Liming
“Educated buyers who are ready to make quick decisions will have success in this market.” - Jen Liming
“I match the right buyer with the perfect home based on their unique needs.”
Home
Liming’s ability to navigate the complexities of real estate negotiations is one of the reasons her clients return to her time and time again. "Buying or selling a home is an emotional process for everyone involved," she says. "It’s crucial to stay calm, focused, and keep my client’s goals front and center."
In one particularly challenging transaction, emotions were high due to pricing disagreements and contingencies. "By maintaining open communication, staying patient, and working with a trusted network of professionals, we reached a successful outcome," she recalls. "I’ve learned that staying composed and solution-oriented can turn even the toughest situations into a success."
As the real estate market continues to evolve, Liming remains keenly attuned to the shifting needs of buyers. Heading into 2025, she’s noticed a continued demand for homes with updated kitchens, energy efficiency, and home office spaces. "Buyers are still looking for homes that balance functionality with lifestyle," she says. "With the median home price, specifically in the Somerset Hills area, at $706,000, buyers are discerning and want value for their investment."
While the pandemic-era trend of remote work sparked an interest in larger homes, Liming believes the trend is shifting. "Buyers are now looking for homes that balance proximity to work hubs with versatile living spaces," she explains. "While home offices are still desirable, they’re no longer the top priority for most buyers."
Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important factor for homebuyers. Liming points out that energy-efficient features, such as upgraded windows, modern HVAC systems, and improved insulation, are not only beneficial for the environment but also add long-term value to a home. "Buyers are gravitating
toward homes that offer both sustainability and cost savings," she says.
As technology continues to reshape the real estate landscape, Liming is adapting by staying ahead of trends. "Smart home technology is becoming a must-have for buyers," she says. "Features like smart thermostats, lights, alarm systems, and EV chargers are not only appealing but also help homeowners save on energy costs."
Liming’s tagline, "Local Expertise, Global Connections," reflects her unique ability to combine in-depth knowledge of the local market with access to global opportunities. As part of Sotheby’s International Realty, Liming has access to a network of real estate professionals around the world, providing her clients with unmatched service.
"For example, I recently helped a client interested in purchasing connect with an agent in South America by leveraging our Global Market Referral Director," she says. "The global reach of our brand—offices in 84 countries and territories—ensures my clients have access to the same high level of service, no matter where they’re looking to buy or sell."
As Liming looks toward 2025, she’s optimistic about the continued demand for homes in her area, particularly given the ongoing low inventory. "Educated buyers who are ready to make quick decisions will have success in this market," she says. "Sellers will continue to benefit from high demand, and I’m committed to staying in constant communication with my clients so they don’t miss an opportunity."
With her deep local knowledge, strong negotiation skills, and ability to connect clients to global opportunities, Liming is poised to continue her success in the ever-evolving real estate market.
For Jen Liming, helping clients find their forever homes is more than just a career—it’s a passion shaped by family, community, and a commitment to excellence.

When it comes to creating a home that feels as good as it looks, flooring is foundational. For nearly three decades, Sparkle Floors and Carpet has been the go-to name for homeowners seeking beautiful, durable, and expertly installed carpet and flooring.
Founded by Peter DeLeon in 1995, the business began as Sparkle Me Clean, a carpet and upholstery cleaning service operating with a single portable machine. Over time, Peter discovered what he calls “the gold mine hidden under ’80s and ’90s carpeting”—oak hardwood floors waiting to be revived. This realization led to the expansion of services to include hardwood floor refinishing, carpeting, stair runners, and vinyl installations. The company rebranded as Sparkle Floors and Carpet to reflect its broader offerings.
“Our main goal has always been to make the process seamless for our customers,” says Travis DeLeon, one of Peter’s sons and current owner of the company. “We show up on time, work efficiently, and never compromise on quality, while still being reasonably priced.”
Today, Sparkle Floors and Carpet is truly a family business. In 2020, Travis and his wife, Sarai, bought the company from Peter, bringing fresh energy and expertise that have fueled remarkable growth. Over the past five years, the business has expanded by 300%, thanks to their leadership and the trust of their loyal customers.
“Our growth is really a reflection of our commitment to treating every client like family—many are still friends today,” Travis says. “It’s all about building trust, delivering great results, and exceeding expectations.”
Sarai also plays a pivotal role in managing the company’s operations, marketing the brand through social media and other platforms, and ensuring a seamless customer experience. Alongside Jalen DeLeon, Travis’s brother, and Micah Crump, the company’s dedicated managers, the team continues to innovate and grow.
After transitioning from a storefront in Scotch Plains, the company now operates two mobile showrooms, bringing carpet and flooring samples directly to customers’ homes or businesses. This innovative approach has enhanced the customer experience, making it easier for homeowners to visualize options in their own spaces.
Sparkle Floors and Carpet collaborates with contractors, painters, interior designers, and realtors across the state, creating value for clients through trusted partnerships. The company’s commitment to quality and customer service has earned it a loyal following.
“We treat every home as if it were our own,” Sarai says. “That mindset has helped us build strong relationships with clients who often return for future projects or recommend us to family and friends.”
One notable project was featured on NBC’s George to the Rescue. The team donated vinyl flooring to a local family in need, showcasing their commitment to giving back to the community.
“When we give back, it’s not just about the work—it’s about connecting with people and making their lives better,” Travis says. “That’s what makes this job so fulfilling.”
Sparkle Floors and Carpet also partners with the National Forest Foundation. For every project completed, the company donates to plant five trees in national forests. Last year alone, their contributions helped plant 1,560 trees, aiding in reforestation and environmental preservation.
Additionally, the team volunteers locally with the NJ Tree Foundation to plant trees in urban areas. “It’s rewarding to know we’re contributing not just to our clients’ homes but also to the health and beauty of our communities,” Travis adds.
The DeLeon family recently undertook their own home renovation, applying years of expertise to create a dream space. From custom chevron designs to high-quality European finishes, every detail reflected their passion for excellence.
“When it’s your own home, you don’t cut corners,” Travis says. Sarai adds, “It’s a representation of who you are, and we wanted every element to feel intentional and timeless.”
“The process taught us a lot about the importance of planning and communication,” Travis says. “Every detail matters, and that’s the approach we bring to every client’s project.”
According to the company's managers, today’s homeowners are embracing the natural beauty of white oak flooring, which pairs well with the light, organic tones currently trending in interior design. The team also emphasizes the practical benefits of hardwood flooring, even in areas like kitchens, where tile is traditionally favored.
“Hardwood floors create a cohesive look, are easier on the knees, and can be refinished to extend their life,” Micah explains. Jalen adds, “Since many homes already have red oak floors, we can reduce the redness of the wood, achieving a white oak look without the cost. This process has saved customers thousands of dollars.”
For homeowners looking to protect their investment, Sparkle Floors and Carpet offers expert advice:
• Use rugs in high-traffic areas.
• Wipe up spills immediately to prevent damage.
• Maintain consistent humidity levels in the home.
• Avoid harsh cleaners or excessive water during maintenance.
• Use felt pads under furniture to prevent scratches.
• Make sure your vacuum is designed for hardwood floors to avoid damage.
• Avoid wearing shoes indoors—grit and debris can act like sandpaper, causing small scratches that dull the finish over time.
• Avoid rolling furniture or heavy items directly on the floor—use a protective mat or lift instead.

For nearly three decades, Jim and Eileen Barna, owners of TrueLeaf Kitchens, have been transforming kitchens into stunning, functional spaces that reflect their clients’ personalities and lifestyles. With a design philosophy rooted in timelessness and practicality, TrueLeaf Kitchens has become a trusted name in Somerset Hills for creating dream kitchens that blend beauty with purpose.
For our Somerset Hills Kitchen Showcase, Jim and Eileen share highlights from four of their favorite recent remodels, showcasing their attention to detail and ability to tailor designs to meet unique needs.
A memorable project, designed in collaboration with interior designer Nicole Forina Home, featured bold choices that pushed creative boundaries. TrueLeaf Kitchens brought the vision to life with dark blue cabinets, brushed gold hardware, and a statement marble backsplash. The centerpiece was a fuchsia-colored range, complemented by a marble countertop with garnet accents that tied the entire design together.
“We love when clients are willing to go bold,” says Jim. “This kitchen became a work of art, with book-matched stone veining and antique mirror inserts in the cabinet doors to add a touch of sophistication.”
In a Bernardsville Tudor-style home, the Barna’s balanced tradition with contemporary elements. “The homeowner wanted a slightly modern flair but didn’t want it to feel out of place with the home’s architecture,” Eileen recalls. The design featured a quartzite countertop and a full-height stone backsplash with carefully aligned veining, creating a seamless flow from the counter to the wall.
The client also opted for subtle modern accents, like sleek light fixtures and a custom stone-front farm sink. “It’s all about adding modern touches without losing the timeless character of the home,” Jim notes.
For a family seeking a warm yet modern kitchen, TrueLeaf Kitchens created what Eileen calls an “organic contemporary” design. The kitchen incorporated wood tones in the cabinetry, countertops, and finishes to balance the clean lines of the modern layout.
The space also included a multipurpose tech area, complete with a concealed desk for computers and devices. “The family wanted a functional space for homework and entertainment, but it needed to look tidy when not in use,” Eileen explains. “We created a built-in desk area that blends seamlessly with the rest of the design.”
One standout project involved a kitchen where theclient wanted a mix of rustic charm and modern elegance.“They had two windows flanking a 48-inch range, so we used marble trim around the windows and created a full marble backsplash for a fire-resistant, durable finish,”Jim explains. “Above the cabinets, we added a brick veneer to give the impression of an old brick wall, which made the space feel timeless and unique.”
The kitchen’s centerpiece was a custom wood island with a sink, finished with a marine-grade varnish to ensure durability. “We also built a walk-in pantry into the cabinetry, so it looked like part of the design,” adds Eileen. These thoughtful touches gave the kitchen a cohesive and polished feel while honoring the client’s vision.
Through each project, TrueLeaf Kitchens emphasizes practicality alongside style. “Trends come and go, but we aim for timeless designs that are both beautiful and functional,” Eileen says. By incorporating features like hidden charging stations, multipurpose work areas, and durable finishes, the Barna’s ensure their kitchens stand the test of time.
With their years of experience and a passion for creating personalized spaces, Jim and Eileen Barna continue to set the standard for kitchen design in Somerset Hills. Each project tells a story, blending their clients’ needs and desires with the artistry and craftsmanship that TrueLeaf Kitchens is known for.

2024 was a year that saw a shift in buyer habits toward homes that were right-priced vs aspirationally priced, as evidenced below (unsold vs sold) The right-priced homes actually received offers above ask. At press time, this trend continues.
