I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits and soaking in the last memories of summer.
This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose it's because of the immense joy that children bring to their families and the significant impact they make on their communities.
Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow. They are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our heart-work and greatest investment. We love to highlight some of the best for Roswell's kids in this issue.
Secondarily, who could forget pets? This special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. Who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
My childhood pet was a sweet beagle, Peanut. He accompanied our family on road trips, camping trips, boating outings and many, many sports fields! I acquired a chocolate lab, Scout, who was with us for almost 12 years for my kids to create and have their memories of sharing many of the same experiences. Now this has been passed down. I am proud to have a 5-year-old yellow lab grandpup, Kona, who I adore and goes everywhere with most of our family! Pets are definitely a blessing to us all!
We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month. Please continue to support all our local businesses here in Roswell!
Cheers!

Proudly presented from our non-profit, renovating homes for children with special needs at zero cost to the family.
One often saw pinwheels on little girl’s bikes in parks and neighborhoods. Eight-year-old Rheagan had them on her wheelchair, which was perfect as its symbolism was “to turn one’s luck around.” While her pinwheels brought joy, Rheagan’s bright, infectious personality brightened every place she went. She was born with Spina Bifida. After numerous surgeries on her legs, and although she had no movement below the knee, Rheagan was able to use her wheelchair to get around independently. In school, Rheagan excelled at reading and science, and with her independence and strong will, she participated in gymnastics and WCMX at her local skatepark. When Rheagan got home, her independence ended. Without an accessible sink, she could not wash her own hands. While most kids her age had mastered an independent shower, Rheagan had to be lifted into the tub and required assistance to be safe. Sunshine on a Ranney Day, through support from very generous sponsors and donors, renovated Rheagan’s bathroom to be accessible and a beautiful dream bedroom where she can be independent and thrive!

“A home is not a place, it’s a feeling.”
Westside Market was founded as a concept to encourage entrepreneurship by removing many of the barriers small businesses encounter in starting up, like leasing space, permitting, business licenses, sales tax administration, staffing, and marketing to name a few. Frank Bell is the store manager and offers sellers a space within a space where they can become an entrepreneur with many of the hassles eliminated. "This, in turn, offers shoppers unprecedented access to a breadth and depth of products not found anywhere," he says. "Our average shopper is here 90 minutes! To walk the whole store is almost half a mile."
More than 200 different vendors are represented, growing to 300, promises Frank. You'll find home decor, furniture, rugs, gifts, fashion and vintage items throughout the space. Westside Market was founded in Atlanta in 2013 to provide a diverse and unique shopping experience for homeowners and interior designers as well as the general public. Now, there are four locations across some 200,000 square feet. "Our members provide inspiration in the unique look that each brings, along with difficult-to-find products. One can literally furnish their entire home from our store with each room having a unique look," says Frank. Recently, Westside had a vintage Land Rover from North Africa and vintage iron park benches.
His experience ranges from flying corporate aircraft all over the world to working for the CocaCola Company. He was in the U.S. Army before that,
finishing his career commanding a Special Forces team in the Army Reserve. Now, he commands Westside Market, supporting vendors and partners.
"We have a terrific mix of shoppers, some designers and mostly homeowners. Many of our shoppers are here to simply see what is new. With over 200 vendors, our merchandise is turning over frequently with plenty of new arrivals each week. Come see us on August 26th from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. for our huge open house party with food trucks, a car show, raffles, giveaways and lots of entertainment for everyone!"

Roswell Arts Fund (RAF), in partnership with the City of Roswell, is delighted to announce the inaugural ArtAround: Pathways project. Through the end of September 2023, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the picturesque trail alongside Don White Park in a whole new way, immersing themselves in a captivating blend of art and nature.

Flour Power Cooking Studios serves children and adults of all ages by teaching and educating the joy of cooking and the experience of preparing a meal together. Flour Power strives to foster a lifelong love for cooking that will positively impact all aspects of its guests' and their families’ lives. At Flour Power, children and families can participate in weekly classes, summer camps, family cooking events, and custom birthday parties, led by energetic cooking instructors in a residential-style kitchen equipped with tools and ingredients any family would find at their own home.
Kimberly and Fernando Rosario, residents of North Fulton area since 2018, used their combined experiences in cooking, marketing, sales, and finance – as well as being parents of active children themselves – to establish the first Flour Power Cooking Studio in
the state of Georgia back in 2021. The brand started in North Carolina with a single studio and has now grown to almost 20 studios nationwide, sharing the joy of cooking to children and families for over 10 years.
The Rosarios chose Alpharetta for its proximity to Roswell and the abundance of families in the area. From their own experience as parents, they knew that the community was looking for another alternative for children’s activities outside of school and youth sports. There are vibrant city centers, where families love to spend their evenings and weekends together and it all seemed the perfect place to establish the first Flour Power in Greater Atlanta. Due to the popularity of this location, the Rosarios plan on opening a second location in East Cobb sometime in late 2023. FlourPowerStudios.com

In August of 2022, Diane Geyer was running with her dog Lucky (namesake to Lucky’s Burgers & Brew, owned by Diane & Ernie Geyer) when an unusual event occurred. Diane saw a litter of five kittens that had been left with food and water on the back porch of the Atlanta Street Baptist Church. Diane was immediately concerned for their welfare. She posted photos of the kittens on Facebook, and by the end of the day, every kitten had a loving home. I lost my precious calico cat named Coco in March 2022 and had been looking for a calico. When I saw that there were two calicos in Diane’s photos on Facebook, my heart sang. I immediately reached out to her. Sadly, all the kittens were taken. I grieved until later that day when Diane texted me to say that a calico was available if I was still interested. I asked what happened and she replied, “It’s a God thing.” Within an hour this precious calico kitten with a black eye mask was mine. I named her Zorra, after Zorro, the black masked superhero. Diane is her Godmother! Friends and visitors all know Zorra. She is a beautiful, loving and very social cat. Sandy Buhler.
Our wirehaired vizsla (Mozart, 8) was named after Mozart, because we were engaged in Vienna, Austria. She is our first dog as a couple and has brought us so much joy with her funny beard and loving personality. Our German shorthaired pointer (Louis Armstrong, 5), was named after Louis himself, because we were married in New Orleans, LA. He keeps our older dog young with his playful nature. Jonathan & Veronica Burman.
Mellie is an 8-year old English bulldog. We adopted her six years ago after a quick foster failure through Georgia English Bulldog Rescue, which is an absolutely incredible organization. Mellie had a very difficult start in life and was terrified of everything when we met her, but she has become the most amazing best friend. A few months ago, we found out that she had cancer. Now she’s a tripaw and doing marvelously! If you see her cruising around Roswell in her wagon, be sure to say hi! Cat Plant.
Rosie is a 2-year old Bordoodle (Border Collie and Poodle) office dog at Office Evolution Roswell who loves to greet people at the door with a sweet demeanor. She enjoys laying on the front desk to see everything going on. She is very good at asking for belly rubs. Many people refer to her as an emotional support dog or a human in dog clothes. Members of Office Evolution bring their kids in on a regular basis to play with her. One day, Rosie was not at the office and a member’s kid asked where she was. The answer was, “Rosie is on vacation.” So, he asked his mom, “Where does Rosie go on vacations?” At home, she is very funny. She puts her paw in the water bowl and taps when she is thirsty. When hungry, she drops her bowl at my feet! She is always ready to play ball or snuggle. She acts like a cat by sleeping around the back of my pillow and laying on the desk at the office. Jackie Blyth-Gottlieb.
Frannie Cutie Puppy is an 8-year-old female tabby with the most beautiful green eyes. She was adopted as a foster kitty and then let loose by her owner. She arrived in our neighborhood as a stray and eventually found our home, where my children fell in love with her. We adopted her 5 years ago and have been smitten ever since. We like to call her a cat-dog because she is the sweetest most loving cat we have ever met. She loves to be warm, held by her humans for as long as they’ll have her, and will spend hours trying to capture any gecko that is on the opposite side of any glass window. She has yet to be successful. The Naranjo Family - Bryan, Linda, Claire and Asher.
Please meet my beautiful miniature American Eskimo, Bella Luna. She enjoys chasing squirrels. She will literally chase them up a tree and then balance on her back two legs like a bear. She is extremely agile. Her breed was traditionally trained to walk the tight wire in the circus. She enjoys barking, eating, playing with her toys and she loves her momma. She seeks me out and sits next to me every time I meditate. She has been a wonderful unofficial support animal since I’ve been widowed. Mindy Rokosz.
This is Miss Mabel. She’s an 8-month-old German shorthaired pointer rescue that we adopted from Orphan Annie Rescue when she was just 3 months old. She’s full of energy and loves the Woodstock Road dog park in Roswell. Mabel also loves splashing in the creek at Waller Park and taking long, crazy walks at Roswell Area Park, stopping to watch the soccer games! We took this happy picture when she was playing at the Woodstock Road dog park. Lisa Conn.
We started kayaking with Dory, but she didn’t really love it. Once I started paddle boarding, she changed her tune. Now when I ask her if she wants to go on the boat, she runs out to the yard (after I chase her to put on her life vest) and steps onto the paddle board, many times even before I can get on it! Natalie Raven.
Sgt. Bojangles is a 10-year-old American pitbull. This is Sarge’s first trip to the beach. He didn’t like the waves, but was perfectly content sitting under the umbrella with his shades on, looking cool! Shannon and Burt Wright.
Linus, Snoopy and Gecko are 4-year old potbelly pigs. We had Gracie pig, who is our charity mascot and logo, but she passed away, so we ended up getting three new pigs! We raised Linus (the one with the black polka dots) in our house the first year. He literally thinks he’s a dog and will run to you when you say his name. After a year, Peter made me put him out to the pasture to be a normal pig. Peter, Holly & Tucker Ranney.

My name is Marie Stevens. My husband Brent and I moved to Roswell twelve years ago, and this is where we chose to grow our family. We have two daughters, Lexi and Maddy, who amaze us every single day, and one sweet goldendoodle, Cooper, whose favorite thing in life is to initiate and participate in family hugs.
Bringing Cooper into our lives, changed us in more ways than we could have ever imagined. Until Cooper, we had not needed the services of a dog groomer. But once he was a part of the family, I quickly learned how vital a routine grooming schedule is to a pet's happiness and health. I joined the many pet owners in our area who fought to get onto regular grooming schedules, often waiting months for an appointment. And often I felt like the environment he was in wouldn’t be the one I would choose if I truly had more options.
I was looking for a career change at that time, and through what feels like a very ordered set of steps, I learned about the petbar brand. I was immediately intrigued. In a city that is so fortunate to have so many providers for every service imaginable, this was one for which we don’t actually have enough providers. This was something I could bring to Roswell that would solve a problem, and enhance life for our pets and pet parents. After my visit to meet the owners of the brand, and learn how petbar works, I was convinced that this would be something our great city of Roswell would enjoy. Every aspect of the petbar Roswell experience is set up to maximize comfort and reduce stress for all of our clients, four-legged and human alike. This was an opportunity to make grooming more comfortable and accessible for all.
We offer bath-only services, as well as full grooming services. Bath appointments are always available within three days and groom appointments within ten days. We are a no-kennel establishment. Grooms happen in private groom rooms, one on one with a groomer. We book on an appointment system, so that you can schedule a time that works best for you, and your pets are done within an hour and a half to two hours. Bookings can be made by calling the salon, and also online or through our petbar app. We clean the salon every
night, and our space is open and inviting. We have a TV monitor at the front which allows you to see where your pet is at any time. We offer complete transparency for our pet parents’ peace of mind.
We also offer a monthly bath membership, which for just a few dollars more than a one-time bath, gives you access to up to four professional baths and unlimited self-washes every month. This allows all of our furry loved ones to live their very best lives and then come in to get cleaned up. And we all know that clean pets get more cuddles!
Self-service baths, nail trims, and a variety of other services are also available on a walk-in basis.
What’s my favorite part of owning petbar Roswell? Each and every time I hear a pet parent say to us at pickup, “Wow, we can tell they really like it here.” And then seeing how many of those pets and parents join our growing petbar Roswell family.

Atlanta's abandoned dogs need you
Over three million dogs enter U.S. animal shelters every year. That doesn’t account for thousands more that are rescued by independent organizations. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 34,000 dogs are taken into Metro Atlanta animal shelters. 5,000 of those are in Roswell.
The stories of mistreated, abandoned dogs are endless. Just the first few notes of Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel”, used in the ASPCA’s TV ads, are enough to start the waterworks. We can’t save all the dogs, but there are many local organizations who are saving thousands every year and they need your support.
Hero Dog Rescue is one such group. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, they depend on public donations and the passion and hard work of their volunteers. They go above and beyond to help dogs that other rescues can’t or won’t work with, by saving and fostering seniors, sick and injured dogs that require even more care and attention.
There is no brick and mortar headquarters for Hero. Dogs pulled from high kill shelters or saved from the street are placed directly into a volunteer foster home.
Aneta Ardeljan has been a Hero Dog volunteer for the past three years. In that time she and her husband have fostered and adopted out more than 120 dogs from their home in Buford, GA. She recently received a Congressional Commendation from Congressman Andrew Clyde for her work with Hero. In addition to being an outstanding foster, Aneta helps with vet appointments, mentors new fosters, and hosts events at her home to provide a gathering place for the Hero team to connect. “We rely on our foster volunteers to provide these abandoned and neglected dogs with love, care, a warm home, a clean bed, proper nutrition, toys, exposure to everyday elements and walks,” she says. “Some of these dogs have never slept inside or on a soft, clean bed, ever.”
We asked Aneta if she had a favorite, uplifting rescue story. She said that there are too many to choose just one, but, “Nothing is more gratifying than getting a dog from the shelter that is shaking uncontrollably, scared, ungroomed, with tail tucked between its legs, completely shut down… and within a few days of showing them love, care and comfort, a warm bath, and a clean soft bed to lay their head at night, that dog is now wagging their tail and smiling at you, giving you kisses and looking into your eyes as if saying, ‘Thank you for saving me.’” Cue Sarah McLachlan “Angel”...
There are many ways to support Hero Dog Rescue. Adopt a dog. Consider fostering or volunteering. If you aren’t able to do those things, a financial donation goes a long way to help. No amount is too little. You can also like and follow Hero on Facebook @HeroDogRescue. HeroRescue.org

Our bond with our furry friends brings us much joy. But did you know that along with joy, many health benefits come with having a dog? A report by Harvard Medical Students called Get Healthy, Get a Dog points out these benefits and what we can do in return for our canine besties. Here are a few pointers for a two-way street to happiness as a dog owner.
People with dogs are found to be fitter and have fewer chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Adhering to a workout or playin-the-park program sometimes becomes an excuse for caring for the dog and making them happy, with the notso-hidden side effect being a healthier owner.
In return for their obedience and undying love, we can commit to walking our furry friends even during cold, hot, or rainy days. Pet boutiques and stores carry dog booties in many styles for your dog's feet when the pavement gets too hot or cold. Choose your favorite pattern for even more fun conversations at your local park.
Having a dog in your home has the emotional benefits of companionship and purpose, structure and self-care, bonding and socialization, and stress relief. Whether you live with a family, a roommate, or by yourself, studies have shown lower stress levels, less
depression, less anxiety, and less isolation because of the canine-human bond.
A case in point is when a walk in the park or even just lying together on a blanket becomes a social event when people come to pet your dog or want to have a conversation with you about the dog. This stimulates the dog and you as the owner, releasing endorphins and oxytocin, two feel-good chemicals.
You can make dog life in your home easier in many ways. First, consider non-scratch floorings such as tile, Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP), or a matte finish. Washable rugs can be attractive, easy to clean, and will prevent scratches. As an added benefit, the dog won’t slide, and its joints won’t wear out as quickly with softer, grip-able flooring.
Toys to keep your dog entertained are imperative. The new “squeak-less” toys, such as the “Trusty Pup Silent Squeak,” emit an ultrasonic frequency squeaky sound only your dog can hear. For times when you are away, filling a special toy with peanut butter or kibble can pique the dog's interest for hours. Two such toys are Kong toys, which the dog must work to reach the treat inside, and the Snuffle Mat, where you can hide kibble for hours of searching.
Nothing is too good for our furry friends!
A new trend in luxury housing is an oversized laundry room geared towards your and your dog’s comfort. The pet-friendly laundry room features a dog wash with steps for the dog to climb, built-in dog cages, toy bins, and even pull-out beds. A Dutch door allows guests to visit the dogs without any unwanted jumping or stealing of food during your events.

WE'RE SO GLAD TO HAVE YOU IN ROSWELL. HOW DID YOU LAND HERE?
My husband and I decided to move back to Georgia (from Virginia) just prior to our oldest daughter starting kindergarten. When we first moved here, I got a job as a Georgia Pre-K teacher in a private facility. However, I missed teaching in public school, so once my youngest was ready for kindergarten, I applied for a teaching position with Fulton County Schools. I was fortunate to be offered a position at River Eves in January of 2021. I started as an EIP (Early Intervention Program) teacher. I have had the pleasure of being a fifth-grade teacher, RTI specialist, literacy coach, and assistant principal. I choose to stay here because of the school community’s unwavering dedication and commitment to ensuring our students receive the best possible education.
I look for opportunities to ask questions and take the time to listen to their answers. As a staff, we plan social events outside of school and I make every effort to attend as many as I can. I spend most of my time at these events listening and asking questions. Another great
strategy I use is to share about my personal life, which makes staff feel more comfortable sharing their personal stories. Of course, it is also fun to play quick “getting to know you” games at staff meetings.
I am looking forward to building upon the well-established traditions and high expectations that already define River Eves Elementary School. My goal for the upcoming year is to continue to build a climate of care, trust, belonging, and respect, not only for our students, but also for our staff and community members.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
I have been married for 21 years to my husband, Chris Gowin, who is a product of Fulton County Schools. He owns a car restoration business in Cherokee County. I have three children. Lena, my oldest, attends Georgia Southern. Olivia is headed to Ole Miss in the fall. Bryan, my youngest, is a rising junior at Milton High School. All three love to play soccer, so I spend much of my free time cheering them on at games. We have two dogs, Stella, a mixed rescue; and Miley, a chocolate lab. Because my husband and son love all animals, we also have two sheep, two goats, and several chickens.
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABBY RAMSEYMy husband’s family is Roswell through and through. My mother-in-law attended Roswell High School and taught for 30 years at Milton High School. I began my Fulton County teaching career at Ridgeview Charter Middle School in Sandy Springs. There I taught sixth grade humanities and then became the assistant administrator in charge of International Baccalaureate, Intervention Services, and Section 504. I was fortunate to be selected as the Sweet Apple assistant principal in 2016 and held that position for seven years. I am excited to be named the principal at Vickery Mill Elementary, so we can become even more part of the strong Roswell community.
It is important to build relationships as quickly as possible. I currently have optional meetings for my staff to come to meet with me one on one. During these meetings I ask them: What is working well? What do you hold near and dear to your heart? Why is Vickery Mill the best place to learn and work? What do you wish you were able to do? What do we need to reevaluate? What are your goals and aspirations? How can I help you? I then am able to complete a needs assessment to find action steps. I also believe in providing team-building activities and culture events for staff. An example of this is creating a committee that hosts events once a month. These are fun events that staff can choose to attend such as a "bloom bar" to make their own bouquet, a "soup crock pot bar" for all staff to participate in recipes, and Zumba classes. Strong connections are made by getting to know staff as people outside of their classrooms.
Vickery Mill is a tight-knit small community. This coming year, I look forward to continuing to grow the school community connection with more school events where families can participate. Families can expect to see me throughout the building and working in the classroom with their students.
I am married to Andy Alhadeff, a Fulton County school counselor at Northview High School in Johns Creek. We have a daughter, Hayley, who is seven and a son, Brady, who is 4. I am excited about another year in Fulton County Schools. We are so proud of our students, who have shown resilience over the last few years, and our educators and programs have only continued to grow and improve. Students are excelling on multiple levels, from academics to sports to the fine arts to career technology and innovation. We have made so much progress in our recovery from the pandemic, and I appreciate the support of our parent stakeholders and the Board of Education.
Community backing and collaboration are vital for our success. So much great work has been done to support our students and we have proved that we are better together. Examples of our collaborative success include the Bridge to Success, the program we created to utilize federal dollars from the CARES Act, and the American Rescue Plan. These funds have been applied to create and supplement existing programs that allow us to focus on the whole person – academics, workforce development and emotional health.
As we move into the new 2023-2024 school year, our dedicated and determined staff and I look forward to building on the progress we have made. We know you value high-quality education and programs that will help prepare your children to be the leaders of tomorrow. Our heartfelt aim is to help students be successful in the path they choose –first to graduate, then to attend college or be ready for employment in the workplace. Fulton continues to demonstrate strong expectations for academic rigor with college readiness support.
Our Career, Technology, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) programs equip students with leadership and vocational skills to prepare them for employment. Our extensive student services provide mental health and other important resources
for students’ well-being. I could not be prouder of our community, but there’s always work to do and we’re ready to launch. We have also invested heavily in literacy training and focused on the science of reading in our early grades.
Last, but not by any means least, we have taken measures we needed to address that enhance our safety and security programs. Our district has made tremendous investments in equipment, tools and personnel as well as updating our assessment protocols. Safety and security are our top priorities, so students can be free to learn and succeed. As the world and our communities change, we adapt and evolve together while keeping our goals in front of us. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work.
Community develops through trials, tribulations, and shared experiences; and, through exhausting rehearsals, challenging new lessons, and joyful performances. For all the families who support their kids’ travel teams, music lessons, Saturday morning soccer games and demanding dance schedules, we salute you! These commitments lead to a child’s personal growth and self-confidence that form a foundation to last a lifetime.
Ashlyn Davidson is 18 and found her community at Roswell Dance Starz, the residing dance company of Roswell Performing Arts , within Roswell Recreation & Parks. “Dance Starz is so special because the instructors foster a community between the students and the families that is incredibly supportive and keeps dancing fun. I have made some of my very best friends through Dance Starz, while being involved in something that I absolutely love to do,” she says. Ashlyn is the daughter of David and Krista Davidson. Her sister Tinsley is 13 and agrees, “I’ve made many long-lasting friendships, while I have grown each year as a dancer. Our directors and instructors at RDS are so talented and supportive of each one of us!”
Ashlyn and Tinsley started dancing at the age of 3, joined pre-company when they were 5, and have both grown up in the program. RDS offers ballet/pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and hip-hop. They also have an optional competition team which both Ashlyn and Tinsley have thoroughly enjoyed and have benefited from in many ways. “RDS does various performances throughout the year that showcase the fabulous talent in our company, and are absolutely amazing to watch,” says proud mom, Krista. “We look forward to them each year. We’ve been very thankful for this dance program and all it has to offer!”
Designed to give talented dancers training in dance technique and provide an outlet for performance, this pre-professional program focuses equally on technique, proficiency, and dance education along with performance quality. Dancers range from second graders to seniors.
“Lessons learned in the studio help our dancers grow and mature outside of the studio. Dancers learn the importance of teamwork, accountability, self-responsibility, persistence, and creativity,” says Katie Owerbach Mulnix, dance company artistic director.
“It’s great to see a dancer’s passion for their art, and their journey to work and achieve their artistic and technical goals. We see dancers grow through our program to become responsible, creative, and hard-working young adults.”

“There was something in the air that night. Everyone was on a cloud and having a ball,” say Magnolia Ball co-chairs, Chris and Tracy Archer. It was true, the stars aligned and everything was perfect for the biggest, best, and most successful Magnolia Ball in years, grossing over $100,000. The amazing night began with a very social cocktail reception followed by fine dining and the Emerald Empire band that would not let you stop dancing, an irresistible silent and live auction, and items from Mittie’s Gift & Museum Shoppe were available for purchase if you didn’t win your favorite things in the auction.
For 38 years the Magnolia Ball has been the primary fundraiser for the preservation of Bulloch Hall, built in 1839 and on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the childhood home of Mittie Bulloch, mother of President Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States.
While the Magnolia Ball has been an outstanding and highly coveted Roswell black tie event for 38 years, Friends of Bulloch, Inc. received their 501(c)(3) nonprofit designation in 1993, which made this the 30th year of the organization. The Magnolia Ball theme highlighted the accomplishments that Friends of Bulloch, Inc. has achieved over the last 30 years thanks to the generosity of the sponsors who donate to this event and the incredible skills of master carpenter, Geoff Lambousis.
Geoff Lambousis was the honoree of the evening for his 30 years of reconstructing every historic structure on the Bulloch Hall property including the summer house gazebo near Mittie’s
Gift & Museum Shoppe on the front drive (used by the Bulloch family to stay cool during the hot summers); the main well on the other side of the front drive which supplied all the water for the home and a cooling well behind the home for food storage. The reconstructions in the service yard included two dog trot cabins (a dog trot is a southern style house with two separate living spaces under one roof with a center breezeway used as a sitting area to stay cool) and the carriage house. One cabin became the offices with the Osage Terrace Room below opening onto the Osage Memorial Terrace with the pavilion, blacksmith hop, and fireplace nearby for events. Orchard Hill, a multiyear project, included Malon’s pond with a fountain and a dock for musicians surrounded by an earthen amphitheater. A gazebo and bridge grace Hagan’s Hollow, and a nature trail extends from Orchard Hill to behind Bulloch Hall. A beautiful pergola is underway that will define the entrance to Orchard Hill. These reconstructions were captured in a video shown at this year’s Magnolia Ball. Bob Hagan said, “The Magnolia Ball this year was outstanding. I am so grateful to all our sponsors and the people who gave so generously of their time and creativity. “
The mission of this year’s Magnolia Ball fundraiser is the restoration of the interior of Bulloch Hall, which has suffered neglect since the pandemic, with a pressing need for the replacement of plumbing, repair of furniture and floors, and cleaning of period fabrics, rugs, and draperies. Thanks to a Friends of Bulloch, Inc. grant many years ago, Dr. Page Talbott of Philadelphia was consulted to restore the Bulloch Hall furnishings and period-appropriate fabrics for chairs, sofas, dining room curtains and English-made wool runners for the main hall staircase. Sara Chase of Boston was consulted on the original interior house colors to restore Bulloch Hall to the original 1839 colors. Historic restoration is tedious and
expensive and only experts in historic restoration are employed. With that in mind, the Friends of Bulloch, Inc. were excited to have the greatest number of sponsors ever! Comments shared that it was the best ball in years, how much fun was had, and the great anticipation for next year’s Magnolia Ball.

We adopted Newley, our yellow lab/golden retriever mix, when she was about 4 months old from the rescue group, Adopt a Golden Atlanta. Now she is 14 1/2 years old and spends her days taking short walks, napping, and insisting she needs another treat.
She's had her share of adventures, like the time we came home to find her with red paws. We were scared to death until we realized she ate a marker. Her adventure 6 years ago had to be the biggest. In 2017, our daughter who had Newley with her, was in a car accident. Another car hit the rear passenger side near where Newley was sitting. Newley got spooked, jumped out of the broken window, and disappeared into the woods behind Roswell City Hall.
Many volunteers from all over Atlanta, and many from our community searched for her, put up posters, shared sightings, and ultimately helped locate her and bring her home after the six days. We are incredibly grateful for every one of the people who helped look for her and find her! Luckily, she only had a small cut on her front leg, and after returning home, didn’t leave our yard for several weeks.
I’d say she had enough of the outdoors for a while! She has been the best dog for our family and we are thankful for rescue groups like Adopt a Golden Atlanta who help find homes for these amazing dogs.
My personal goals for this school year are to maintain good grades, stay active in my high school and community clubs, and to be accepted into Auburn University. My goals for the flag football team are to help the team be well-prepared and work hard, as well as to build a team that can make a run in the playoffs. In Roswell, my favorite restaurant is Zest. Order the fried calamari. The advice I would give to a younger player wanting to play flag football is to always hustle. Hustle beats talent, when talent doesn’t hustle.
My goals for this year’s season is to not only build upon what I’ve already learned through training, my coaches, and other teammates, but also to make improvements that I can personally focus on to become a better person and overall athlete. I’m hoping this year I can, with the help of my teammates, take some of the Roswell girls relays to state. Not only that, but I strongly believe we can break another school record. My family and I like to go to Marlows. I love the Wagyu burger! The advice I would give to any upcoming athletes that are looking to start track would be just to have fun. There are so many bonds and friendships made. This sport teaches you a lot about how to stay mentally and physically strong. It’s not always easy and takes a lot of work and commitment in the season and the offseason to perform at your best, but it’s worth it!
One of my biggest goals for this season is to help lead my team and be a role model for the younger girls. I want to do everything I can to uplift the team and help us further develop our culture. My favorite place to celebrate after an exciting Friday night lights is Taco Mac with my friends! The advice I would give to anyone starting cheer is to connect with your teammates. No matter what’s going on outside of cheer, your teammates are always there for you!
My personal goals for this season involve keeping a positive mindset for myself and my team. It is normal to have doubts during this sport, but we will be physically prepared. The hard part is within our own thoughts, therefore staying positive will be beneficial for all. After a long Friday night game, in my opinion, ice cream is the perfect way to celebrate. Luckily there is a Bruster’s within three minutes of Roswell High School!
My goal this year is to consistently shoot under par in my final high school season. For the team, I’d like to help them go all the way to the state championship. And, my academic goal is to make the Principal’s List. To unwind, I enjoy going to Moe’s Southwest Grill with my teammates and my family loves Spiced Right Rib House for holidays and other special occasions. To younger athletes, I would say, be patient and work hard through rough patches of your career.

With so much buzz around AI, Fellowship Christian plans to capitalize on the new tech's ability to streamline processes. While students won't get the luxury of using it to cut corners, teachers will. They work to customize solutions to the individual and the circumstances of the disability, and often use a mix of speech-to-text, speech selection and voiceover technology.

Have you seen the new turf fields at East Roswell Park?
The project involved the replacement of two artificial turf fields at East Roswell Park. The fields were originally converted from grass to turf in 2013, but had reached the end of their useful life. The new turf is the Classic HD product from FieldTurf. It has 100% slit-film fibers, a 3-layer infill system, and is topped with CoolPlay, which helps provide cooler surface temperatures from traditional infill materials. These fields will provide the best combination of durability and safety over the next decade. Both fields also received new fencing with bigger poles and stronger mesh, as well as the city logo at midfield. Field 2 was outfitted with a new lines package, allowing the Recreation and Parks Department to expand its capacity for games and practices at East Roswell Park.
Plus, in the past year and a half, the City of Roswell has been awarded almost $10 million in grants from both federal and state sources for a wide variety of projects across the City.
In all, Roswell received 16 grants worth $9.9 million, the equivalent of about 1.5 million in taxes. Not only do these grant funds
represent a direct investment in city services, projects, and future growth, but they also demonstrate how taxes paid at the federal and state level can be reinvested at the local level. These grants will help fund many projects and services all across the community from public safety to new trails and parks and improvements to city streets and sidewalks.
THE LARGEST GRANTS INCLUDE:
• $3.5 million from the federal government’s Community Project Grant for the Storm Water Children’s Garden and Adventure Path and Ace Sand Park.
• $2.2 million from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget for the development of Liberty Square Park.
• $2 million from the federal government’s Reconnecting Communities Grant for a multi-use trail under GA 400 connecting Big Creek Park with Liberty Square Park.
• $948,411 in state grants for street and roadway resurfacing and paving.
At the new turf fields, the inaugural “Battle of the Badges” kickball game took place between Roswell Police Department and Roswell Fire Department. They are both winners, in our eyes.
