CRAFTING COMMUNITY WITH BAY CLUB'S TRACY ARGONDIZZA EDUCATION REDUCING SINGLE-USE PLASTICS AT HOME

"Your days are your life in miniature."

That's a sentiment from author Robin Sharma that I like to keep at the forefront of my mind, especially when I'm falling behind on my goals. It helps me to remember that what seems like dramatic leaps and bounds made in personal progress are actually not leaps at all.

That big goal you have to get healthier in some way? It may seem overwhelming, but it will come to fruition by committing to the small, seemingly monotonous actions compounded day after day. This holds true for anything in life—business, relationships, personal finance—but especially for health and fitness.

If you're finally ready to make progress, our annual Health and Wellness issue offers plenty of inspiration. You'll learn why working out in infrared saunas is all the rage right now on page 30, you'll hear how Bay Club owner Tracy Argondizza channeled her passion for fitness into a heart-centered gym community on page 18, and your morning coffee will get a healthy reboot with the help of LB Kitchen on page 22.

So, whether it's a new workout, supportive atmosphere, or an elevated morning routine to give you that "I've got this" kind of attitude, look no further. We have your back, and we can't wait to see you reach your goals.

Bay Club Fitness owner Tracy Argondizza leads with heart while building wellness, community, and connection on the peninsula

Tracy Argondizza doesn’t just believe in her mantra, Who has time for maybe?—she lives it every day. From her early career in the Navy to running one of Portland’s most beloved boutique fitness centers, her life has been a masterclass in seizing opportunity and staying true to her passions. While her story is filled with impressive career moves and big wins, it’s Argondizza’s energy and heart that truly shine.

After graduating high school in Maryland, Argondizza joined the U.S. Navy, where her natural leadership and athletic ability quickly earned her the role of Master Chief of the Drill Team during bootcamp. One of her proudest assignments during her six years serving was working as Social Assistant to James Webb, Secretary of the Navy, in Washington, D.C. This pivotal position provided Argondizza with the confidence to take on challenges and embrace leadership roles in any setting.

Following her time in the Navy, Argondizza and her first husband relocated to Maine to raise their son, Brandon. Her career took her to various industries and locations, from Tennis of Maine to L.L. Bean, but fitness was always her true calling. In 2000, she picked up a part-time job at Bay Club Fitness, and within three months, she was promoted to General Manager. Six years later, she became the owner of the club, turning it into one of the most notable boutique fitness centers in Portland.

Argondizza wants us to know that Bay Club Fitness isn’t a typical gym—it’s a place where customer service is key, the amenities are thoughtful, and the atmosphere feels personal. It has everything you’d expect from a high-end club, including group classes, trainers with top certifications, steam rooms and saunas, and even laundry services for workout clothes, but what really sets it apart is excellent hospitality and attention to detail. “We want this to be our members’ second home, a place where they feel cared for and connected,” Argondizza says. “It’s not just about numbers; it’s about knowing our members, asking about their lives, and helping them achieve their goals.”

“THE BAY CLUB IS ABOUT MORE THAN FITNESS— WE’RE CREATING A SPACE WHERE PEOPLE FEEL VALUED AND SUPPORTED, WHERE THEY CAN BUILD A LIFESTYLE THAT MAKES THEM HAPPY AND HEALTHY.”

Like many businesses, Bay Club Fitness was hit hard by the pandemic. In 2019, the club’s corporate accounts were booming, and lunchtime workouts filled the gym. COVID-19 forced a pivot, and Argondizza met the challenge head-on. She led a major renovation of the facilities, updated the logo and brand, streamlined operations, and redefined the club’s offerings to adapt to a post-pandemic world. With the help of Mary Slattery, the new Operations and Group Fitness Director, Bay Club has emerged even stronger.

Always one to embrace new opportunities, Argondizza recently entered the world of real estate. Joining Rebecca Kingsley at Peninsula Real Estate, she’s channeling her extensive local network and passion for helping people into this fresh chapter.

“Real estate is something I always thought I might do—I just had a feeling I’d love it. Working with Peninsula Real Estate, I’m able to work from my office at the club and still be available to my members,” she says, nodding toward the Peninsula Real Estate logo printed on one side of the room.

If Argondizza’s professional life sounds busy, her personal life is just as full. She and her husband, Andy Argondizza, share a passion for music, food, and the outdoors. Andy, a professional guitarist and master gardener, has encouraged Tracy to take the stage with him as a singer over the years. When they’re not working, the couple splits their time between a cabin on Webb Lake and their condo in Fort Myers, Florida. Whether gardening, hiking, canoeing, or just enjoying the sunset, Argondizza finds joy in living an active, balanced life. Of all her accomplishments, she is most proud of her son, Brandon, and his work with Native Movement, an Alaskan nonprofit focused on social justice and Indigenous rights. She also treasures the close relationship she shares with her sister, Bobbie, who Argondizza got to cheer on at her first marathon in November 2024 at the age of 53.

The Peninsula Real Estate team: Anya McGuckin, Rebecca Kingsley Sewall, Tracy Argondizza, and Rebecca Hatch.

As Bay Club Fitness continues to grow, Argondizza is excited about its future. She envisions more community-focused events, expanded partnerships, and a continued emphasis on holistic wellness. “It’s about more than fitness,” she says. “It’s about creating a space where people feel valued and supported, where they can build a lifestyle that makes them happy and healthy.” Health, of course, is about more than just physical fitness—Bay Club will continue to promote mental and social well-being through programs like self-defense classes and partnerships with nutritionists and physical therapists.

Whether she’s participating in a fitness class, helping a real estate client find their dream home, or singing alongside her husband, 64-year-old Argondizza approaches life with purpose and joy. Her mantra, Who has time for maybe?, isn’t just a tagline—it’s a way of life, and it’s proof that embracing opportunities, living boldly, and bringing others along for the ride can lead to a truly fulfilling journey.

SHROOM SHIELD

“We love mushroom powders for the body and mind benefits,” says Bryna Gootkind of LB Kitchen. “Plus, raw cacao is rich in antioxidants, magnesium, and calcium. What better way to boost your immune system during the colder months than with a warm, chocolatey drink with functional ingredients?” Gootkind recommends reaching for Fermensch Kombucha’s Adaptogentic Mushroom Dust, made with a 100% organic mushroom blend, which is available at LB Kitchen’s mini-mart.

WINTER’S Wisdom

Seasonal depression, especially in the Northeast, can stem from losing our identity within nature: we forget that we are one with the earth and that the seasons exist not only for the health of the planet but also for our own well-being. A simple way to navigate Maine’s long winter is to reconnect with the natural rhythms and healing qualities inherent in this season.

CONTINUED >

Holistic health practitioner Corbin Chase on finding balance and introspection in nature’s cold embrace

Each season carries its own medicine, prescribing how to manage ourselves with intention and holism. As a new season approaches, we should be prepared to ask ourselves the seasonal question. For example, in spring, the world awakens from its winter slumber. As nature begins to bloom, we too enter a time of new beginnings and creativity. The energy of spring can fill us with hope and potential. Ask yourself: What new intentions am I ready to set?

As we move into summer, the days grow longer and warmer—a time of peak spontaneity and confidence. The fire element radiates vitality and enhances the joy of social connection. Ask yourself: What am I ready to share with the world?

When autumn arrives, it’s time to harvest the fruits of our labor. The cooling energy of this season invites us to reflect on what we have created and what has served us. Ask yourself: What do I wish to release?

Finally, winter brings rest and introspection. The colder season provides a unique space to release old patterns, behaviors, beliefs, and relationships that have run their course. Picture the peaceful stillness of a winter night, with the full moon shining brightly in the dark sky. It is within this stillness that we prepare strength and create room for new growth to nurture the seeds of new beginnings come spring. Ask yourself: What wisdom does my inner voice whisper to me?

We can feel whole when we engage in the yearly cycle that guides us through self-regulation and personal development: creation, expression, reflection, and release. With this perspective, we are neither lonely nor victims of winter. In times of low mood, take a deep breath and align with the earth’s rhythms, finding comfort in our shared experience. Just as the earth allows its greens to die to conserve energy for spring growth, we too must honor winter introspection. The cure is within us, and it is our personal responsibility to embrace the medicinal intention of winter, just as all living things do.

Hearty Foods

In the winter, the energy of the planet descends into the roots. Root vegetables like potatoes, beets, and carrots offer nourishment. Rotating your diet with the seasons can help align your internal rhythm with the external world, and eating hearty foods supports the body through the winter months.

Whether you’re new to self-care or a seasoned practitioner, our welcoming spaces are here to help you cultivate mindfulness, rejuvenate your body, and find lasting calm

Sweat Smarter

AT HOTWORX, INFRARED HEAT IS THE SECRET TO FASTER RECOVERY AND WORKOUT RESULTS

Unlike typical gyms where members sweat it out in a standard room or studio, HOTWORX is unique in its approach: all workouts take place in a large infrared sauna that can accommodate up to three people. Inside, infrared heat penetrates the skin at a deeper cellular level, helping to detoxify the body, enhance metabolism, and promote healing. “People will tell me they do hot yoga, but hot yoga is just heat—you’re not getting the therapeutic benefits of infrared heat penetrating your skin,” says Katrina George, owner of the HOTWORX locations in Bedford, NH and South Portland. “You’re expelling 200 to 300 times more toxins in an infrared sweat. Once you get all that junk out, your body rewards you with all sorts of amazing benefits.”

“You’re expelling 200 to 300 times more toxins in an infrared sweat. Once you get all that junk out, your body rewards you with amazing benefits.”

One of those benefits is a boost in metabolism even after your workout is complete. “As soon as you enter the sauna, before you even start working out, you’re already burning calories,” George says. “When you add in the movement aspect, it’s easy to see how beneficial infrared heat is. It cranks up your metabolism, so even if you’re doing a 15-minute workout, you’re still burning calories for an hour after that.” Another standout benefit of infrared heat is its ability to aid recovery. George tells us the anti-inflammatory effects are particularly beneficial for those dealing with muscle soreness, joint pain, or injuries. By promoting blood flow and collagen production, infrared heat helps the body recover faster and reduces swelling, making it a great option for anyone recovering from surgery or injury. “Cross-training athletes, such as runners, CrossFit enthusiasts, and college and professional athletes often use infrared heat as a complementary recovery tool,” she says.

Beyond the physical benefits, infrared heat has a significant impact on mental health. According to George, it helps boost serotonin levels, which can improve mood and reduce stress. This is particularly important as Mainers head into the colder, darker months when seasonal affective disorder can affect many people. Many HOTWORX members report improvements in sleep quality—the calming effects of infrared heat, combined with the physical exertion from the workouts, help the body relax and prepare for restful sleep.

HOTWORX is designed with busy lifestyles in mind: the studio offers 24/7 access, meaning members can work out whenever it fits their schedule, and virtually instructed sessions range from 15 minutes to 40 minutes long. With an easy-to-use app for booking and managing sessions, there’s no need for rigid class times or long-term commitments. The intimate and flexible environment creates a supportive space where members can feel comfortable and get results. “I’m a busy working mom, so I love being able to book on the fly,” says George. “When I get into the sauna, I shut the door and tune the world out. As soon as my program starts, I have someone telling me what to do.”

REFILL, REUSE, REPEAT

Nearly ten years ago, Laura Marston made a New Year’s resolution to stop buying single-use water bottles. “One, why am I buying water? And two, why am I making this trash that’s not necessary?” she remembers thinking. “I started learning about recycling and about plastic in the environment, and that was my gateway to discovering how toxic it is for marine life, for birds, and for humans.” Marston noticed a gap in the market: she could refill some bulk foods at the co-op, but there was nowhere in Portland offering package-free personal care products or cleaning supplies. In response, she founded GoGo Refill, a one-stop, zero-waste shop for refillables (think dish soap, body wash, laundry detergent, deodorant, shampoo, skincare, and more) alongside sustainable grab-and-go products with locations in South Portland and Brunswick.

Photo: Mathew Trogner

WHAT SIMPLE EVERYDAY HABITS CAN PEOPLE ADOPT TO REDUCE PLASTIC WASTE IN THE HOME?

The simplest thing is a mindset shift: start thinking about what is going to happen to a product or package at the end of its life. The key to low-waste living is making decisions on the trash that will result before you buy something. You’re not going to be able to prevent all plastic from entering your home, but put an emphasis on reducing before recycling.

HOW DOES THE REFILL MODEL WORK?

Consider something like laundry detergent. It comes in a big plastic jug, and when it’s empty, you’re supposed to recycle it. Instead of getting rid of the jug, just wash it, bring it into a shop like GoGo Refill, and we’ll refill it for you. Every time you reuse a container, you’re cutting its carbon footprint.

GOGO

REFILL’S REFILLABLE SUPPLIES ARE NON-TOXIC AND BIODEGRADABLE. DOES THAT MEAN CONSUMERS ARE SACRIFICING QUALITY?

Definitely not. One of the great things about the refill model is that you can get just a sample—you don’t have to commit to a full container of anything. If you want to find out what laundry detergent works best for you, we’ve got options: liquid, pods, powder, and sheets. You can try just a little bit, or test them all out. We have a team of what I like to call low-waste experts, and we love helping customers find the right product to fit their needs.

ARE THERE ANY ECO-FRIENDLY ALTERNATIVES TO PAPER TOWELS?

The average family spends over $250 a year on paper towels, which are really energy intensive to produce. We have a great CONTINUED >

Photo: Marina French

“unpaper towel” that’s basically a cottonflannel alternative you can wash and reuse. But you don’t have to buy something fancy like that—you can just use a rag, or an old t-shirt, or whatever material works for you.

“SINGLE-USE PLASTICS ARE SO PERVASIVE IN OUR CULTURE THAT WE DON’T EVEN SEE THEM ANYMORE. MAKING THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN SINGLEUSE AND REUSABLE IS A HELPFUL WAY TO CATEGORIZE ITEMS THAT ARE COMING INTO YOUR HOME.”

WHAT IS GREENWASHING, AND HOW CAN CONSUMERS WATCH OUT FOR IT?

Greenwashing is when a product’s marketing claims to be eco-friendly but the product itself is not. When looking at the ingredients on the package, I often turn to the Environmental Working Group website (ewg.org ) to learn more about what’s actually sustainable and eco-friendly.

HOW CAN SWITCHING TO REFILLABLE AND ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS IMPACT NOT JUST OUR HOMES BUT THE GREATER COMMUNITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT?

GoGo Refill has been open for five years, and we’ve helped to reuse nearly 300,000 plastic packages through refilling. It benefits the individual because we’re not making as much trash in our homes, but it also affects our municipalities in the way we’re reducing the solid waste that we pay the city to handle. If we make less of it, then we’re not paying as much for it. That’s also 300,000 packages that won't end up in the environment and be broken down into microplastics and eaten by animals.

GOING

We’re saying goodbye to plastic wrap, Ziploc bags and aluminum foil, and hello to reusable wax food wraps you can wrap around anything your hungry (or full) heart desires.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN REUSABLE WAX FOOD WRAPS IN 4 EASY STEPS

GREEN

SUPPLIES:

• Beeswax beads

• Fabric

• Pinking shears

• Parchment paper

• Baking sheet

INSTRUCTIONS:

01. PREHEAT your oven to its lowest setting.

02. CUT FABRIC into desired shapes. Using pinking shears so the fabric doesn’t fray, you can cut your fabric into any shape or size you’d like. Consider what size or shape of food you store the most and use that as a guide.

03. PREP + MELT. Cover your baking sheet with parchment paper and place the cut fabric on top. Sprinkle with beeswax beads and place in the oven to allow beeswax to melt for 5-10 minutes.

04. KEEP IT COOL. Remove fabric from baking sheet (careful, it’s hot!) and allow wax to harden and cool.

FOR REUSE, wash in cool water (you don’t want the wax to melt!) with mild dish soap and let air dry.
