Do you like surprises?

I love predictability. Routines, habits, things you can count on. There’s comfort in the familiar.

That’s one of the reasons why I find this time of year in Portland so special. The seasons have shifted, and once again so has the vibe. The influx of tourists and Portland part-timers means you could crawl down Commercial Street faster than you can drive it. The lines at Holy Donut and Standard Baking wrap around the block. The salt-tinged air coming from the harbor has finally lost its bite and now carries with it the sounds and smells of Portland's best live music and all the fried seafood you could want.

Yep, summer is in full swing, and we're here for it.

But what about the element of surprise? We can’t always know what we’re in for, and it’s the perfectly unpredictable parts of Portland that keep things interesting around here.

That’s why for this June issue our cover story will introduce you to some of Portland's most talented artists and designers you might not yet be familiar with. For our home feature, we’ll peek inside a Portland condo whose owner decided to make an area in his home more functional and surprising—and we are loving the results. We've also asked some of our favorite Portland notables to share what they would name as our city’s best-kept secret. We hope you’re inspired to occasionally skip the familiar this summer and go off-schedule to check out their picks.

And just like that, Portland surprises me. So whether you've decided to go off the beaten path this year, or you've found yourself waiting in line for that chocolate sea salt donut (again), I hope you'll bring us along. We’ll be here all season.

You can count on it.

What is Portland’s bestkept secret?

We asked members of our community to share their favorite underrated spots. Here’s what they had to say.

CULTURE

“The Eastern Promenade Trail is one of the most beautiful places in town. When I start my day off at The Form Lab, I get to look out the window and witness the sunrise over the bay, along with many others who are out on the trail for their morning walks.”

XANDER NELSON Musician

“When you travel to Cliff Island, your body starts to let go of the busy pace of life. You can unplug and be present in the moment, experience the grounding sounds of nature, feel connections within a small unique community…and find yourself.”

“Strange Maine on Congress Street is a hidden gem. They’ve got big collections of records, CDs, books, movies—on VHS, even!—and other cool oddities. Looking around in there makes it feel like you’re digging for buried treasure, in a good way.”

Chef and Owner, David’s Restaurant

“Portland’s best-kept secret is breakfast at Belleville. They have the best laminated pastries I’ve ever eaten—the croissant and pain au chocolate are better than what you can get in Paris. My other pick is HiFi Donuts, where I go for the vegan sausage breakfast sandwich—and I’m not even vegan.”

Owner, Michelle Estell Jewelry

“One of Portland’s bestkept secrets is Corey & Co. on Pleasant Street. Barbara Corey, who owns the shop, designs and sells her garments as well as other unique clothing and select accessories from local jewelry artists.”

AN UNUSED ELEVATOR SHAFT BECOMES A WINE CONNOISSEUR’S FAVORITE HOME FEATURE

ARTICLE BY BECCA ABRAMSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIZ DALY

OPEN HOUSE | REAL
ESTATE

When Fred Williams began working with interior designer Annie Kiladjian of Annie K Designs on his Munjoy Heights townhouse, the two were presented with a challenge: What to do with the empty space where the elevator, which Williams chose to remove, was originally located? (In a turn of events, Williams ended up needing ankle surgery just eight months after moving in, and the elevator would have been quite convenient during that time!)

“We primarily slated the elevator space for storage,” says Kiladjian, since the home had limited areas for storing Williams’ belongings. “Then he tasked me with finding someplace to showcase his extensive wine collection. It wasn’t an easy task, but I decided that rather than using the elevator shaft as storage

on the main living floor, it would make a great bar area,” she continues.

Williams, the managing director at Old Port Advisors, loved Kiladjian’s idea. “Annie created the bar space on the fifth floor for entertaining on the roof deck, as well as the much more intricate bar and wine space off the third floor living area,” he notes. “What she oversaw was a beautiful and efficient transformation of a basic elevator shaft into an artistic attribute that now greets guests visiting our home.”

Reimagining a niche space like an elevator shaft can be complicated, but Kiladjian appreciated the challenge. “It comes down to thinking outside the box and listening to your customer’s needs and wants. Where there is a will, there is a way!” she adds.

AERIAL PERSPECTIVE

3 ARTISTS, DESIGNERS, AND CREATIVES MAKING WAVES IN MAINE

Lauren Berg

Botanic Magic

WHAT IS YOUR MISSION WITH BOTANIC MAGIC?

To create art that lifts spirits, inspires a sense of wonder, and deepens a person’s connection to their community. Window murals are often on display in very public spaces, so I feel a responsibility not only to the client, but also to the neighborhood. I’ve noticed over the years that people look forward to my window paintings, and I’ve begun to think of them as a gift to the community—something that brings people together. Window painting has been around forever, but I try to bring a fresh, fine art approach to it.

WHAT MAKES MAINE’S CREATIVE COMMUNITY SPECIAL?

Maine is a very special place to be if you’re an artist and a maker. There’s so much talent spread throughout the state, plus a rich history of homesteading and hand-crafting. Maine has incredible galleries, museums, and so much dramatic wilderness to explore, which all serve as endless wells of inspiration. There is a trend towards community over competition here, which is such a refreshing and nurturing space to be a part of as an artist and a woman.

WHAT MAKES WILDWOOD OYSTER CO. UNIQUE?

The ocean is our heart and soul, and we bring you to the water—no matter where you are. That in itself is unique, but our origin story sets the tone. This all started with a one-of-a-kind gift from my sister: a leather hide. Since that day, we have continually made new salt-air-inspired bags, jewelry pieces, and accessories that connect deeply with people. Our customers are everything—we love to ask their opinion about our new designs and share ideas, and we value them like our closest friends.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE RUNNING AN AWARD-WINNING ECOMMERCE AGENCY, BEING A MOM, AND DESIGNING HANDBAGS AND ACCESSORIES?

Being present is often easier to say than to do, but I really strive for that. When I’m at work, I’m focused on the strategies to help our clients. When I’m in the design room, I’m thinking about new sketches and our amazing customers. And when I’m home with my family, that is time just for us. I’m the luckiest to have all these beautiful roles.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION?

As a maker and designer, I turn to architectural structures, mechanical movements, and nature for creative inspiration. I break down the forms into straight lines and patterns, then find ways to apply those to my work.

YOU DESIGN A VARIETY OF ITEMS, INCLUDING JEWELRY, APPAREL, AND TABLEWARE. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEDIUM TO WORK WITH?

My medium of choice is cardboard—it’s a perfect sculpting material with flexibility, and it makes an excellent painting surface. It’s abundant, resilient, versatile, and sustainable, and it also allows me to be a kid again and experiment with different techniques.

HOW DOES YOUR WORK SHARE THE STORIES OF BOTH MAINE AND GHANA?

I design patterns inspired by the visual language symbols (Adinkra) of my native country, Ghana. My favorite symbol is endurance—to progress in the face of difficulty. When I moved to Maine, I took a class called Critical Issues that almost killed my dream of exploring Ghana’s symbols when I realized it isn’t easy to introduce a new culture to another one. I decided to learn which symbols were significant to Maine and created the Maine Culture brand as a way to introduce Mainers to my visual language concept. It takes a lot of endurance and willpower to do what I am doing, but the acceptance and support of my work from the Maine community makes it all worth it.

A Bread Start

Daytime restaurant and bakery Bread & Friends cultivates community in the Old Port

You may have heard of Bread & Friends before they opened a brick-and-mortar location at the corner of Fore and Cotton Streets this spring, but the bakery-slash-pastry shop you’re probably envisioning is a far cry from the team’s latest approach: a daytime restaurant and in-house bakery. “What we really care about is making delicious food and sharing a creative community,” says Maggie Rubin, one of the four co-owners and the brains behind the business’s operations. “And now that we have a [physical] space, we can create that community.”

Owned equally by four friends who met working at State Bird Provisions (and sister restaurant The Progress) in San Francisco, Bread & Friends began when Tanner Rubin, Maggie’s partner and the team’s head bread baker, began selling homemade breads, pastries, and “things that go with it” (think butters, spreads, and jams, affectionately referred to as “friends”) at farmers’ markets on the West Coast. The pandemic flipped the hospitality industry on its head, so Maggie and Tanner, along with their coworkers-turned-business partners Jeremy Broucek and Jess

Rattey, made the cross-country move to Portland. “The food scene is a huge reason why we landed here,” explains Maggie. “A slower pace of life, access to the outdoors, a place to settle down—Portland sort of ticked all the boxes,” she says.

The goal was to immediately open a brick-and-mortar location where they could employ themselves, but the team chose to grow their East Coast audience at Maine farmers’ markets and through wholesale partnerships first. “We were trying to get our name out there, get to know people, and create a market for what we had to offer,” Maggie recalls. The original concept for Bread & Friends’ Old Port location was a market with prepared foods and an in-house bakery, but that idea evolved when the four co-owners realized just how much they enjoy the way food cultivates community. Plus, “Jeremy’s a talented chef, and we wanted to showcase what he’s able to do alongside what everyone else is doing,” explains Maggie, “so that’s how we ended up with this daytime restaurant and bakery idea.”

Today, each of the owners oversees a different pillar of the business—Maggie handles operations; Tanner is in charge of bread; Jess works her magic with pastries; and Jeremy is the head chef tasked with creating breakfast and lunch dishes—but the four friends enjoy collaboration in the unique kitchen environment they’ve established. “This is my first time working in a bakery that also has a restaurant

aspect,” notes Tanner. “I really enjoy when Chef [Jeremy] comes to me and says ‘I’m thinking about this dish, and it needs a bread aspect, and this is my idea.’ It’s great to have that as inspiration, and it’s also a challenge to step out of my comfort zone and play around,” he adds.

That dynamic creativity shines in every aspect of Bread & Friends, where the team plans to incorporate seasonal flavors and ingredients in their pastries and shared plates throughout the year (don’t worry— the bread offerings will stay relatively unchanged). “Next on the docket for us is adding back the wholesale program and getting back to the farmers’ market this summer,” says Maggie, “but what really excites me about this concept is that it could become anything. We’re always kicking around fun ideas—should we do a pizza night? A barbeque night? Dinner service isn’t necessarily something we talk about very much, but who knows? We have a ‘sky’s the limit’ attitude.”

For now, the focus remains informing the people of Portland that Bread & Friends is so much more than your average bakery. “Bread is in the name, so people are always going to see that, but I think they’ll start to learn organically that what we’re trying to cultivate in this building is an experience,” explains Maggie. “Sure, you could come here and get some pastries and a coffee to go, but do you want somewhere to have a fancy lunch and a bottle of wine on a Monday? This is the spot,” she proclaims.
