YOUR DIVORCE AND FAMILY LAW

ATTORNEY

ASK LINDSAY

Can I put a custody order in place for my dog?

Unfortunately, no, pets in Arizona (regardless of my personal opinion) are still seen as property, similar to that of a chair or a table, so they need to be awarded to one person. I have seen final orders where people have somehow been able to sneak a custody plan for a pet into a much larger final order, and the court still will not enforce the order later. I certainly have had many clients transfer the ir pet between households privately and without a court order, and we simply ensure that they have an agreement in place regarding the division expenses so the arrangement can be in place successfully for years to come. I also encourage my clients to recuse another pet during this time, as there are so many beautiful pets who need homes, so in the event it is determined that your pet needs to remain in o ne home permanently, it makes it a bit easier on everyone… and you have saved a few lives along the way.

As long as I'm living my babies you'll be...

You might be wondering why Mike Tyson is on the cover of our Kids + Pets issue.

Well, when I heard Tyson was opening an alternative school in Phoenix, I tracked down the champ seeking an interview on his new, beautiful outlet for Valley youth.

When he agreed to a Zoom, I was beside myself. More so, my husband was beside HIMself considering I'd be befriending one of his childhood idols.

As our interview progressed from professional to personal, I learned so much about Mike- his upbringing, his feelings, and his pigeon adoration. While he's known as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, he is also extremely transparent, sensitive and wise (even though he won't call himself that). I don't want to give away his interview, but this is one piece I've read over and over feeling such compassion, admiration and respect towards the superstar. I'll be sharing some of our interview on Instagram this month as well.

Also in this issue is an exclusive with an amazingly talented and eloquent teen who just so happens to be a local girl going pro with car racing. In addition, you'll read an article penned by a young kid sports reporter who interviewed local pro players asking the purest of questions. An enormous appreciation shout out to the Diamondbacks, Suns and Cardinals players that partook in this fun piece.

Our City Scene section of photos is dedicated to kids (and pets) doing cool stuff, and we even scored a special Taylor Swift story you'll want to share with your mini Swiftie.

Being it's our Kids + Pets issue, I must pay tribute to my sons. Life before them was simply life leading up to them- my kids have taught me perspective, unconditional love, patience, and to embrace my own personal child within. Time is a thief; as much as I want to constantly press pause, it is a blessing, joy, honor and pleasure watching my boys grow and blossom. Momming comes first and it's my most sacred title.

Finally, I cannot end this letter without paying tribute to the pets I've had in the past. Sending you all the happiest back to school vibes! And thank you, TEACHERS, for loving our kids like your own and for playing a positive role in their lives.

Hope you love this issue!

THROUGH HOLISTIC HEALING

WHAT IS AN ANIMAL CHIROPRACTOR?

An animal chiropractor is a professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders in animals, primarily focusing on the spine and its alignment. They use manual techniques, like those used in human chiropractic care, to adjust the spine and joints to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and enhance the overall health and well-being of the animal. While veterinarians offer medical services, animal chiropractors provide holistic, specialized care through adjustments.

HOW DO ES IT HELP MY PET?

Benefits include pain relief, improved mobility, enhanced performance, and injury prevention. It also boosts their overall health by ensuring the nervous system functions properly, which affects the entire body.

WHAT ANIMALS DO YOU SEE?

We see everything from household pets, performance dogs, working dogs and felines to larger livestock and exotic pets including equestrian, show cows, llamas, alpacas and goats.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY PET NEEDS TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?

While many pet owners prefer regular maintenance, you can determine if your pet needs to see a chiropractor by observing their pain, muscular pain, movement problems (gait), and overall health.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB?

My profession is not just a job—it’s a passion that fills my heart every day. There’s no greater joy than easing an animal’s pain, improving their health, and giving them a better quality of life. Seeing an animal move more freely and comfortably right after a session is incredibly fulfilling—it’s like seeing them smile with their movements.

The bonds I build with my furry patients and their caring owners are sacred. I believe in gentle, holistic methods that respect the natural balance of an animal’s body, ensuring their well-being without invasive procedures. At Desert Shadows Chiropractic, we are committed to providing pain relief for many symptoms and conditions so your animals can live a higher quality of life.

Beyond the Ring with Iron Mike

OUR CHAT WITH THE CHAMP ON HIS CHILDHOOD, PIGEONS, AND PASSION TO PAY IT FORWARD

MIKE, IT IS AN INCREDIBLE HONOR AND PLEASURE TO TALK TO YOU.

I’m happy to be talking to you also and spreading the word about our special program in Arizona.

I’M EXCITED TO DISCUSS EVERYTHING YOU’RE WORKING ON, BUT FIRST, NICKNAMED IRON MIKE AND KID DYNAMITE, YOU ARE KNOWN AS ONE OF THE GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHT BOXERS OF ALL TIME. HOW DOES THAT FEEL?

Hey, I’ve been called a lot worse. I’m enjoying it.

“I have the desire and interest to get back in the ring. It’s like an internal fire burning for me to keep going.” -Mike Tyson

BECAUSE IT’S OUR KID’S ISSUE, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START TYSON TRANSFORMATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES ACADEMY’S (TYSON’S TTA), A COGNIA ACCREDITED MICRO-SCHOOL IN ARIZONA SERVING GRADES 6TH TO 12TH?

I’m passionate about improving the betterment of our youth. It helps kids having difficulties in regular schools. It’s where they can get the attention they deserve.

IS THIS A PERSONAL THING, WANTING TO GIVE BACK TO YOUTH AFTER REFLECTING ON YOUR CHILDHOOD?

Absolutely. The feeling of giving back is so much greater than receiving.

ONCE HAVING LIVED IN PARADISE VALLEY, HOW DO YOU FEEL KNOWING YOU’RE MAKING A POSITIVE IMPACT ON ARIZONA KIDS?

I like to make a positive impact on kids all over the world. Since I lived in Arizona, I know Phoenix youth will benefit from this school.

YOU’RE GOING TO BE AN INSPIRATION FOR ALL THE KIDS ATTENDING YOUR SCHOOL. WHO WAS YOUR INSPIRATION GROWING UP?

My mentor was Cus D Amato- my inspiration for everything. He took me- a kid he didn’t know- from the streets, gutter, and sewer systemand made me a world champion.

HOW DO YOU HOPE YOUR SCHOOL WILL HELP KIDS WHO MIGHT FACE CHALLENGING UPBRINGINGS, LIKE WHAT YOU FACED AS A KID?

We did a Netflix documentary of the Brooklyn neighborhood where I grew up, and most recently, found there’s hope. When I was living there in the 70s, there was no hope. There was no hope for a young kid without a family, just an alcoholic mother, like in my case.

YOU STARTED BOXING AT 13. HOW DID THAT HELP YOU NOT ONLY PHYSICALLY, BUT EMOTIONALLY?

I learned so much about myself because everything’s psychological. If you could believe something, you can achieve something. It was a very positive atmosphere.

WHAT DOES THE WORD “CHAMPION” MEAN TO YOU?

There are many variations of champions. Champions about self-respect, self-love, and expressing that to anyone in your presence. It must shine like a light.

WHAT WAS ONE OF THE MOST MEANINGFUL THINGS YOU GOT AFTER HITTING STAR STATUS AND SUCCESS?

My custom pigeon coop.

AFTER RETIRING IN 2005, YOU HAD A MASSIVE COOP CONSTRUCTED IN THE YARD OF YOUR PARADISE VALLEY HOME... TELL ME ABOUT THAT.

Do you have time for a story?

YES, ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD. I COULD TALK TO YOU FOREVER.

So, listen to this. When I was 11, a bully stole one of my pigeons. He started running away because my mother came out and yelled at him to go away. However, I ran after him, pleading with him to be kind and ask for my bird back.

In turn, he called me names and hurt my beloved bird. It was the first time I ever had any engagement of physical fighting.

From that day on, I fought every day, and that led me to becoming who I am now. I turned into a successful fighter because of a pigeon.

YOU ALSO LEARNED TO FIGHT BULLIES.

Yes, but only because of my pigeon. I’d always get bullied... kids would take my glasses and my sneakers... I never fought back. Until fighting for my pigeon, I was terrified to throw a punch.

I wasn’t always the person people know me to be. I never had a father figure. I didn’t conduct myself like a masculine young boy. I was very timid.

“From that day on, I fought every day. I am a successful fighter because of a pigeon.” - Mike Tyson

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO TELL BULLIES NOW?

For someone to hurt someone, they must have been hurt themselves. I’ve learned hurt people hurt people and God made hurt people like me to save hurt people like them.

DID YOU ENJOY LIVING IN PARADISE VALLEY?

It was incredible. I lived next door to Leona Helmsley.

YOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHY “UNDISPUTED TRUTH,” WAS A BEAUTIFULLY CANDID AND TRANSPARENT TELL-ALL, BUT WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I’m very sensitive. People may get the wrong impression of me because I cry easily, but don’t mistake that for weakness.

WHAT MAKES YOU CRY?

Anything... a sad movie, a sad story, reminiscing about my family, wishing my mother could have seen me succeed.

WHAT IS MIKE TYSON’S LIFE LIKE NOW AS A FATHER AND HUSBAND? I KNOW YOU ENJOY WATCHING YOUR DAUGHTER PLAY TENNIS...

She’s 15 and anticipating turning pro; I’m very proud. But she must prepare for disappointments. It’s a hard thing to learn. Success is based on how you handle disappointments.

YOU ARE VERY WISE.

No, I’ve learned from experience. Life is a learning process.

REFLECTING ON YOUR CAREER AND EMBARKING ON MORE TIME IN THE RING, HOW ARE YOU FEELING?

Listen, I wish my mentor was here because he always believed the only reason a person doesn’t do well in fighting is because he loses desire and interest. Not me. I have the desire and interest to get back in the ring. It’s like an internal fire burning for me to keep going.

“I’m very sensitive. People may get the wrong impression of me because I cry easily, but don’t mistake that for weakness.” -Mike Tyson

LET’S TALK ABOUT TYSON PRO, YOUR LATEST ENDEAVOR.

Tyson Pro is a project my wife and I put together. It’s exceptional boxing equipment; boxing gloves, boxing trunks, cups, etc... everything needed for men or women to learn the art of boxing.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO START THE BUSINESS?

I want to protect fighters. Some of the boxing gear I see now is detrimental to the health of the boxers.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL KIDS WHO HAVE A PASSION FOR THROWING PUNCHES?

Go to the nearest gym and learn how to box.

WHAT’S YOUR CHEAT MEAL? ANYTHING YOU ENJOY EATING WHEN NO ONE’S WATCHING?

I don’t do that. I stay on the program.

CAN YOU GIVE US A GLIMPSE OF YOUR PROGRAM?

All my meals have cabbage. Breakfasts are eggs and I eat a lot of fish, meat, and vegetables.

WHAT KIND OF HUSBAND ARE YOU? WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DATE NIGHT?

Staying home. We’re not partying anymore. Been there, done that.

WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO REMEMBER YOU AS?

I just want my children to respect me.

“You don’t have to be big to be strong. You must be big in your heart and in your mind.” -Mike Tyson

Discover the key to revitalization

HOBBIES OUTSIDE THE RING?

My pigeons are my only hobby. I have no hobby but my birds. I have hundreds and am with them every day and every night.

ANY WORDS OF WISDOM YOU LIVE BY?

Nothing is impossible for somebody that tries.

LOOKING BACK, WHAT IMPACTED YOU MOST THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?

I was able to help people from being Mike Tyson. For example, thousands of kids had toys for Christmas because of our initiatives. Mike Tyson is all about giving.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FIGHT?

Buster Douglas. As a fighter, I got the crap kicked out of me. My first loss. It was my favorite fight because I handled it well. I didn’t let it discourage me, and I came back and won the championship again.

And that’s what I’ve learned in life. Never get discouraged. There’s always another day.

You don’t have to be big to be strong. You must be big in your heart and in your mind.

In HIS Eras Era

Meet Mr. Swiftie, the Guy Dedicated to Covering All Things Taylor

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BRYAN WEST

Grab your mini Swiftie for story time courtesy of us at Paradise Valley City Lifestyle as this feature is for your Taylor Swift fan.

We scored a chat with Bryan West, a former reporter at KPNX 12News in Phoenix turned T-Swift journalist.

“I was mid workout when I got a text saying: ‘Your dream job just became available.’ I pulled up the application and immediately started envisioning how I could differentiate my video from other applicants as the job posting went viral,” said Bryan.

Gannett, a mega media conglomerate, had posted a role seeking a Taylor Swift reporter and Bryan was determined to snag the gig.

“I rushed home and recorded 13 reasons why Gannett should pick me. After two months of interviewing, they whittled down the candidates and I was chosen.”

In November 2023, Bryan scored the prestigious title dubbed “dedicated Taylor Swift Reporter” for Gannett | USA TODAY Network. He earned the role thanks to his background in news; Bryan has an impressive resume having won many awards including two Emmys. With his TV experience, Bryan truly understood the time and talent behind being a oneman-band; in other words, shooting, editing, and reporting stories. His skills helped get him the job, in addition to being an admitted Swiftie.

“My introduction to Taylor Swift was the summer following my high school graduation. She released ‘Tim McGraw,’ and I was hooked on the first line. I was drawn to Taylor’s innate ability to weave in and out of different genres, write compelling and relatable lyrics, and make power moves as a singer, artist and businesswoman.”

Bryan’s position is swiftly swoon-worthy. Every day is different. The role consists of covering trending topics, preparing for broadcast interviews, and working on long-form articles. What’s unique about his beat is it covers every news angle: breaking, business, economics, entertainment, education, law, life, politics, sports, tech, and travel- Taylor is all the above.

Since claiming the position, Bryan has covered Taylor’s Eras Tour recalling it to be a one-of-a-kind experience as it set a Guinness World Record, boosted domestic and foreign economies and united fans from all over the world.

“My favorite Swift song to hear live is ‘Long Live’ from ‘Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).’”

Taylor and Bryan
Bryan West
Bryan covering a Swift Concert

Bryan says there’s been countless memorable moments like interviewing one of the 22 Hat recipients in Australia.

“During Swift concerts, one lucky fan gets the coveted ‘Red’ era fedora during her song, ‘22.’ The handmade hat is designed by Los Angeles couture milliner, Gladys Tamez. It was neat holding the Holy Grail of Swift fan fashion.”

And of course, Bryan also tracks Taylor’s love story with Travis.

“I was at a concert where Travis Kelce showed up, night one in Sydney, and the crowd lost it when he walked across the floor to the VIP tent.”

The job has taken Bryan all over the world, most notably to Glendale where he met Miss Swift in 2018. During night two of the Reputation Stadium Tour in Arizona, they connected, chatted, and snapped some photos.

While the job is dreamy, it’s also a hustle; Bryan says big announcement days are crazy busy shooting and editing photos, putting together interviews, designing animations, writing multiple print stories, and doing national appearances. And when Swift takes a break, Bryan works on long-lead stories and research projects. There’s always news when it comes to Taylor.

“What’s refreshing about my job is no matter who you talk to at any point during Swift’s career, they all say the same thing: she is genuine, kind and caring.”

Instagram/Facebook/X/TikTok: @bryanwesttv

IT’S A LOVE STORY...

All smiles, Travis Kelce wowed the crowd joining Taylor on stage during a June show in London- a first for both player and singer. Days after the debut, Dublin concert attendees say Swift allegedly paid tribute to her NFL beau by doing his signature archer pose while performing “Midnight Rain.”

LOCAL TEEN PHENOM IGNITES PASSION FOR PRECISION ON THE RACE TRACK

Need for Speed

At 17 years old, Mia Lovell is eloquent, composed, and a kid who once shied the spotlight.

But the Arcadia young woman is wired with a special spark that screams stardom.

At 5, she started skateboarding.

At 9, she competed in skating.

Fast forward a few years, the teen contemplated pursuing skateboarding in the Olympics.

Deciding against the big games, Mia shifted focus, launching a career in car racing.

Now, the fearless female is experiencing life in the fast lane... a fast track to racing success.

“Before racing, there was skateboarding,” said Mia, as our interview with the 17-year-old began. Mia sat poised and confident in her race suit diving into the timeline of her career path.

“My dad got me into skateboarding. I took lessons, learned tricks, and competed, eventually getting sponsored by Vans. I found a group of girl skaters in Phoenix. My best trick is a K-foot front board. You basically come up to a rail, flip your board, slide backwards, and pull out.”

Mia’s hobby quickly morphed into a profession.

“I won all the local competitions. I even qualified for my first pro competition in 2019, the Tampa Pro... a very big deal. It was fun to find success in it.”

But then things changed.

Here’s our Q&A with the rock star skater-turned-racer.

HOW DID YOUR SKATING CAREER SHIFT DURING COVID?

During COVID, the skateboarding competitions shut down. It was then that I rekindled a new spark and fresh love for skating that was different than before. I realized I wanted to do it for fun versus as a job. It was tempting to pursue the Olympics; however, I enjoyed progressing without pressure. But I made an exciting transition... to racing.

SO, YOU BID FAREWELL TO COMPETITIVE SKATING AND DECIDED TO BE A RACE CAR DRIVER... JUST LIKE THAT?

When I was 13, my dad and I started going to the local track. I didn’t know anything about race car driving. I just was having a good time until I heard about the GR Cup Series with Toyota, a spec series using GR86s that Toyota converts into race cars. All the cars are the same, so it really comes down to the skill of the driver to prevail.

Mia & her dad

DID YOU JUST REACH OUT TO TOYOTA AND SAY, “HEY, I WANT TO RACE?”

When we first heard about the series, I was interested because the car I had been driving during our track days was a Toyota 86. While different, it was still the same platform, so I figured it would be a good rookie opportunity. So, I applied... and got accepted.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST RACE.

At age 16, I showed up for my first race at Sonoma Raceway, thrown into things among drivers in their 20s and 30s. It’s an official pro series with professional drivers.

It was intimidating, but it made me learn to sink or swim. I had to be safe, get through the race, learn, and have fun... all at the same time. The race is 45-minutes. In the car, all you’re thinking about is being in the moment.

For my first race, I think I placed 25th, but I was just happy to finish it! I used skills from my competitive skating days to overcome pressure.

AND YOU’VE FOLLOWED THAT FIRST RACE BY MANY OTHERS...

Yes, probably 20 races all over the country!

My scariest crash was probably my first, and my worst injuries have been concussions.

The fastest I’ve gone is 140 mph! It doesn’t feel fast; rather smooth as you’re going straight.

My best race was at Sonoma. I got highest finishing female and received a nice check!

HOW ARE YOU SPENDING YOUR EARNINGS?

I put it back into racing and save for college.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE IT ALL?

I ask myself the same question. I get it from my parents, my backbone of support. My dad is my idol.

The biggest challenge is dealing with your mental self. It’s an extremely mental sport because when you’re in the car, there’s nothing there except for you, the car, and your mind.

WHAT’S YOUR GOAL?

My goal is to be a professional race car driver with NASCAR. The next step is getting into the Trans Am Series - big boy race cars. It’s going to be a good transition from sports cars.

CONTINUED >

WHAT DO YOU EAT BEFORE A RACE?

It’s hard to eat on race days. But after a race... a big pasta meal!

HOBBIES OUTSIDE SKATING AND RACING?

Riding dirt bikes and playing guitar and piano. I like keeping my mind busy.

SO, IF RACING DOESN’T WORK OUT, YOU CAN BE A ROCK STAR. I could do it all.

FAVORITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL?

Math. I’m kind of a nerd.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS?

My dad always taught me nervousness is the same feeling as excitement.

HOW DO YOU TRAIN?

I train in a sauna and do the rowing machine. It gets hot in the race car, so I need to push my physical limits. I also have a workout regimen.

BIGGEST TIP FOR EXCELLING IN EXTREME SPORTS... Trust yourself.

Young Sports Reporter Chats with PRO ATHLETES

We sent a sports-obsessed kid reporter to interview pro players from the D-Backs, Suns and Cardinals

Hi, my name is Zachary, but people call me Zaza. When I’m not playing sports, I’m watching sports. Sports are my favorite thing in the world. That’s why I enjoy being a kid sports reporter!

I got such a cool chance to interview pros from the Diamondbacks, Suns and Cardinals.

First, I went to Chase Field to join practice before a game. After hanging in the dugout and watching batting practice, one of my dreams came true: playing catch with some of the pros!

Next, I got to shoot baskets with Grayson Allen at the Phoenix Suns training facility. Grayson and I are both #8; he was so kind and taught me some tricks for making 3-pointers.

Finally, I made buddies with Sean Murphy-Bunting, a Super Bowl champ. He’s the new Cardinals CB and the nicest NFL player you’ll ever meet.

Now, I’m going to share some of my interviews with you!

Blaze Alexander and Zaza Geraldo Perdomo and Zaza
Jake McCarthy and Zaza

Arizona Diamondbacks

ZAZA: WHAT’S THE BEST COACH ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED?

Blaze Alexander (D-Backs/Triple-A Reno): Slow the game down. Don’t speed it up. Remember to breathe.

Geraldo Perdomo: Enjoy what you do and be humble.

ZAZA: WHEN YOU SLIDE INTO HOME AND SCORE, HOW DO YOU FEEL?

Blaze Alexander: It’s a rush of energy! The best part is coming back in the dugout and giving high fives.

ZAZA: HOW DO YOU GET OVER A LOSS?

Jake McCarthy: We play a ton of games and truth is, we won’t win everything. We must keep going, do our best, and be there for our teammates.

ZAZA: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU’RE ON BASE?

Blaze Alexander: How I can advance to the next base and ultimately get a run.

ZAZA: WHAT’S THE KEY TO BEING A GREAT HITTER?

Blaze: Being selective and not swinging at everything. Look for a pitch you can drive.

Jake McCarthy: My teammates hit harder than me... ask Christian Walker. It takes a ton of practice.

ZAZA: HOW DO YOU FEEL BEFORE A GAME?

Blaze Alexander: Adrenaline’s flowing and you’re excited. All eyes are on you; you’re on TV, but it’s the same game you played as a kid.

ENSURING CANINE SAFETY IN SUMMER

As the sun’s rays intensify and AZ temps soar, it’s crucial for dog owners to understand and adhere to the regulations outlined in City Code Section 8-3.08. This law is designed to safeguard our canine companions from the hazards of extreme heat.

FIRST, LET’S DEFINE SOME TERMS:

• Collar: Refers to a specialized dog collar constructed from materials like nylon, leather, or metal.

• Extreme (hot) Weather Conditions: When the temperature goes above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. It also includes heat advisories and monsoon.

• Owner: Encompasses individuals who possess, own, or have custody or control of a dog.

• Properly Fitted: Describes a collar that’s tailored to the dog’s neck circumference plus one inch.

• Restraint: Encompasses ropes, tethers, leashes, cables, or similar devices, excluding chains, used to attach a dog to a stationary object or trolley system.

COMPREHENDING THE LAW

According to this law, dog owners are prohibited from using choke collars, pinch collars, or restraints that excessively limit a dog’s movements during extreme weather conditions.

A restraint is deemed excessive if it:

1. Utilizes an ill-fitting collar.

2. Is shorter than ten feet in length.

3. Puts the dog in unsafe or unsanitary conditions.

4. Inflicts harm on the dog.

5. Denies the dog constant access to food, water, shade, dry ground, or adequate shelter.

6. Penalties for Violations: Holding Dog Owners Accountable

THE CITY CODE DOESN’T TAKE VIOLATIONS LIGHTLY, PARTICULARLY WHEN A DOG’S SAFETY IS AT STAKE:

> First Offense: Those found responsible for violating Section B of the law could face a minimum fine of $250.

> Second Offense: A second conviction under Section B escalates the consequences to a Class 1 misdemeanor. This entails a jail term of at least 48 hours and a fine not less than $1,000.

> Third Offense: For a third conviction under Section B, the penalties become more severe. A Class 1 misdemeanor in this case translates to a jail sentence of no less than 15 consecutive days and a fine amounting to a minimum of $2,000.

IMPORTANT EXCEPTION: IT’S CRUCIAL TO NOTE THAT THOSE WHO ADHERE TO THE GUIDELINES SPECIFIED IN SECTION B(2) ARE NOT IN VIOLATION OF SECTION 8-14(A) OF THE CODE.

Understanding and abiding by Phoenix City Code Section 8-3.08 is pivotal in ensuring the safety of our beloved four-legged companions during extreme heat. Rediscover YOU Redefining Your Radiance

TUMMY TUCK

The most popular go-to procedure for women looking to redefine their physique. Whether it’s from pregnancy or weight fluctuation, tummy tucks are a great solution to retighten and reshape the abdomen.

LIFTS

Often used to address concerns with the breasts and arms, lifts remove extra skin to shape and re-contour these areas. A breast lift is a great option for women who are happy with their size, but desire a more youthful appearance. An internal bra, such as GalaFlex, can be added for additional support and longevity of the procedure. Arm lifts get you back to feeling confident and rocking the tank top that has been hiding in the back of your closet.

LIPOSUCTION with Renuvion Skin Tightening

The most common plastic surgery procedure performed in the US, liposuction has evolved. Outcomes are superb when you add a minimally invasive skin tightening procedure like Renuvion. Using this innovative technology, skin can be tightened up to 50%, drastically improving the end result.

FAT TRANSFERS

Fat transfers have evolved significantly over the years. For the buttocks, the era of the “athletic” or natural lifts has arrived. The go-to is a natural shape that highlights your anatomy rather than distorting it. For the face, we often perform fat transfer as a long lasting alternative to fillers to add natural volume to the mid-face, chin, and temples. Fat grafting is often also a fantastic alternative to breast implants for women seeking minimal change.

Dr. Randy Craft is a double board-certified and Harvard-trained plastic surgeon. He is the founder of CraftMD Aesthetics/Wellness, specializing in cosmetic procedures. Notably named “Best of the Valley” in both 2023 & 2024, his extensive training, combined with a sense of artistry, enables him to provide patientcentric, compassionate care—always with an emphasis on safety.

Youth Sports 101

At 6-years-old, Mike Enfield started playing soccer. The little kid eventually made his big dreams a reality, as Mike went onto win a US Open Cup and MLS Cup playing for the MLS L.A. Galaxy and played with Sydney FC, the top club in Australia. He finished his playing career with the US National Beach soccer team playing in a FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

EXPERTS WEIGH IN: A FORMER SOCCER PRO, SPORTS PSYCHIATRIST AND A PERFORMANCE THERAPY TRAINER

Mike Enfield, Former Pro Soccer Player
“IT WAS A DREAM COME TRUE TO PLAY PRO. PLAYING WITH AND AGAINST PEOPLE YOU IDOLIZED AS A CHILD WAS SURREAL.” -MIKE ENFIELD

“Playing with and against people you idolized as a child was surreal,” said Mike.

Like many athletes, injuries put a stop to Mike’s pro career. However, the love for his game runs deep, and now the Scottsdale-based dad is dedicating his time to instilling in youth a passion for soccer.

“I’m starting a soccer club because I love coaching kids.”

This fall, Mike is launching the Phoenix Valley Soccer Club, an innovative approach to cliché club teams.

“The main difference is that kids deserve to be able to compete in a more competitive environment while not sacrificing their other interests and extracurricular activities. It’s about flexibility and understanding.”

As a former pro turned father and coach, we asked Mike for insight into what parents should know about raising little athletes. He says when parents are hyper-focused on kids going pro, more important things are overlooked. And truth be told, a low percentage of kids achieve professional status anyway.

“Kids should be kids and do a variety of activities. Many children often stop playing sports in high school, so developing a diverse athletic foundation early on will help them stay active throughout their lives.”

As a coach who values being more hands off in matches, Mike’s philosophy encourages players to be brave, take risks and not fear making mistakes. He’s calm and steady in stressful environments and stays positive through adversity.

However, his positive approach isn’t always shared by parents.

“Sideline coaching is parents coaching from the sidelines; parents trying to affect the game, their child, or the ref.”

We’ve all been there; guilty as charged. But with back-toschool season, so comes a fresh opportunity to be a better sports parent... and Mike breaks down why.

Different Stages of Sports, By Age

• Ages 0-6: Gymnastics and playground play. Create a positive relationship with physical activity and movement. Learn body awareness safely.

• Ages 6-12: Play sports that kids find fun, preferably a hand-related sport (baseball, hockey, golf, lacrosse) and a foot related sport (soccer, rugby). Developing body awareness and coordination through different mediums is key.

• Ages 12-16: Continue multi-sport play that is FUN. Begin basic weight training to learn the foundational movements to lay the groundwork for future performance training. Participate in track and field to learn how to sprint/run appropriately. As you approach 16, begin considering which sport you want to pursue full time.

• Ages 16-18: Focus on that one sport and participate in performance training to develop that athleticism.

• Ages 18+: If applicable, pursue a college career or professional career. Participate in physical therapy and performance training to maintain high agility, endurance, and strength.

This reflects the perspective and personal experience from Dr. Adam Loiacono, PT, DPT, CSCS- former Director of Rehabilitation for the Phoenix Suns and owner of Loiacono Performance Therapy adamloiacono.com

“When kids are young, it’s more pleasant to simply enjoy the game. No score is kept and parents relish in cute mistakes and take pride in every goal. However, the demeanor changes when there’s a ref and score. It becomes stressful, and parents are more vocal trying to influence the game, their child, or the referee.”

According to Mike, parents do this with the intention of helping the team “win” or help their child “succeed.” In his opinion, however, this approach takes away from the child playing their game. Parents distract their children from what the coach has instructed or from the child having an opportunity to make their own decision (good or bad).

“I love parents who are vested in the team, but when it comes to instruction, tactics or decision making, it’s best to let the players figure it out based on what the coach is teaching them.”

Mike says youth sports is a kid’s time to explore what they like and play with some level of freedom. However, some parents consider winning as the only measure of success and push their kids to not make mistakes.

“I have seen many children play just fine, and when their parents watch, emotions dramatically change.”

Therefore, Mike has 3 ways parents can play a proactive and positive role in their child’s sport experience.

1. Let the child lead the conversations after games. If you force the post-game wrap, emotions are high, and most players don’t want to hear it. Listen before giving feedback.

2. Watch a practice and study what they work on; specific skills, drills, plays, etc. Talk to them about practice- engage and ask questions. Show a genuine interest in what they’re learning.

3.  Help your young child set small goals for themselves in any given sport. An example is: what would you like to try and accomplish in your next game?   As they get older, advance to more complex goals. Offer to help them work on it.  phoenixvalleysoccerclub.com

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT

According to medical professionals, the way in which we engage with our children over sports can impact them far beyond the field. We connected with Brook Choulet, M.D., a Paradise Valley Concierge Sports & Performance Psychiatrist, on do’s and don’ts to help your children thrive in sports and build greater confidence.

• DO: Encourage your child to reflect on how they performed by asking them reflective questions. For example, “What do you think went well?” or “What did you enjoy most about today’s game?” This helps build their self-awareness and allows them to understand themselves and their thoughts better.

• DON’T: Avoid giving unsolicited feedback or criticizing their performance. When a child is criticized, it can lead them to feeling less motivated and start to doubt themselves.

• DO: Identify something they did well. This helps build their self-confidence and recognize their skills. Understanding one’s strengths can help them achieve higher performance not only in their sport, but also in life.

• DON’T: Do not dwell on areas where they need improvement right after a game. Constructive feedback can be helpful, but it needs to occur at the right time.

• DO tell them that you’re proud of them, regardless of game or competition outcome. This will help your child ultimately feel safe with you, rather than feel your approval is tied to their performance.

• DON’T: Never tie your level of “proudness” to a win or a loss. This will lead to your child feeling like their worth is conditional.

According to Dr. Choulet, there is a tremendous amount of power in positive self-talk. Teaching your child how to talk to themselves is crucial for their success in all realms of life. Children learn their internal dialogue from those around them, which includes parents, friends, teachers, and coaches. If you want your child’s self-talk to be positive and motivating, you need to model this and surround them with similar dialogue. The good news is that your words and actions have a tremendously positive influence on how they perceive themselves and their abilities. brookchouletmd.com

A Fresh Start for Independence

Six Ways to Prepare Older Kids to Navigate the Financial World

THE COLLEGE YEARS

Explain how their education is being paid for.

In doing so, ensure they understand the implications of student loan debt, as well as how different choices (like housing) can affect the cost of their education.

Help them find a part-time job to teach them about budgeting.

Getting a job that pays a modest wage – and seeing how much the paycheck will buy them – will teach them that real money is hard to come by. This is a great opportunity to help them establish a budget based on their paychecks.

Teach them how to use credit cards.

Building credit as a teenager is a near-essential nowadays, but the temptation to use it as free money will also be present. If they open a credit card, consider monitoring the account and be willing to shut it down if not managed properly.

THE WORKING YEARS

Explain credit scores and revolving debt.

Before your child takes out an auto loan or begins saving for a house, discuss with their credit score, how it affects future costs of borrowing, and the impact of defaulting on debt.

Review their employer benefits with them.

Important financial choices related to health insurance, 401(k)s and budgeting will come up when your child takes their first full-time gig. Don’t let them overlook benefits that could boost their bottom line.

Teach the value of saving early.

Don’t underestimate the power of compounding. Even saving $50 per month can be a positive experience as your child watches their money grow.

TEACHING YOUNG KIDS ABOUT MONEY

• Normalize kid-friendly money conversations so they understand how money works.

• An allowance helps kids learn money management skills like earning, saving, spending, and budgeting.

• Set savings challenges instilling in them to avoid impulse spending.

• Let them pay for things and involve them in shopping.

By instilling strong financial habits in your children and teaching them to be fiscally fit, you give them an opportunity to thrive as future independent investors. For a free consultation to discuss your family’s unique situation, call The Duffy Mathias Group at (480) 624-2321.

The Three Amigos: an A-List Trio of Mini Burros

HOW THESE DARLING DONKEYS ARE DOMINATING THE VALLEY’S ENTERTAINMENT BIZ

Playing with their ball
Jennica E. Maes Photography
Jennica E. Maes Photography
Jennica E. Maes Photography

In honor of our Kids & Pets issue, we’re introducing you to the three amigos: Hank, Tinkerbell, and Fiona. The trio of mini burros belong to Danielle Stutz, animal lover and owner of Desert Beer Burros. We sat down with Danielle to get the scoop on mothering the adorable trifecta and running her burro biz.

WHAT IS DESERT BEER BURROS?

Launched in 2022,Desert Beer Burros is an event entertainment service where we bring one or more of our adorable miniature donkeys (burros), dressed to impress and ready to serve guests beverages, party favors, treats or hand out marketing/fundraising materials.

Attending events is what they do best. They’re gentle, appreciate a good pet, are always camera ready, and love a good selfie.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE BUSINESS?

My husband, Matthew, is a DJ and had seen a burro at a gig he was working. We had just moved onto our property, and I was excited because the house came with a small arena, an enclosed barn, and shaded stalls. I knew I was going to acquire animals, but once Matthew told me about the burro concept, my game plan shifted to building my business.

DID YOU ALWAYS LOVE BURROS?

I admire how burros are stoic in nature. They’re also therapeutic. I often sit in the middle of the arena, and they all come up to me, nestle, and beg for ear rubs.

WHERE DID YOU GET THE BURROS?

Tinkerbell, Fiona and our original male burro, Monte, were picked up from a wonderful family in Apache Junction. Upon bringing them to our ranch, bedding and premium Bermuda hay awaited their arrival. When we lost Monte unexpectedly, the girls were devastated, so we contacted Daisy Acre Ranch and Rescue where we found Hank. He was Monte’s twin, and the girls took to him immediately.

Danielle's Kids with their Burro Buddies Danielle and Hank
Fiona and Tink

DESCRIBE THE BURRO DEMEANOR.

Some say burros are stubborn, but I prefer the word: observant... we’re on their schedule.  If Hank feels he needs to stand in one spot, there isn’t much I can do about it.  But, if I give him the time he needs, Hank is happy to move along.  Burros are calm and personable. They love going on walks around the neighborhood, enjoy chasing our dog, and playing with their ball.

DO THEY MISBEHAVE?

Unwanted behavior is rare, but it’s essential to have equine-trained handlers.  I’m not a fan of the term: “misbehaving.”  They’re animals.

WHAT IF AN EVENT IS INSIDE?

Our burros have booties ensuring they won’t scratch floors; it also protects them from sliding. In addition, they wear comfortable “donkey diapers.” We haven’t had any accidents yet…

WHAT’S IT LIKE CARING FOR YOUR PETS?

It’s a constant cycle of picking up waste, filling their water, making sure their bedding is dry, and that their arena is intact.  You must tend to their feet and have their teeth checked. They need routine vet appointments. They are not an animal you can simply leave in a stall with hay.

Every morning our family is greeted with Tinkerbell’s “breakfast time” bray as she lets out a loud noise. That bray is then joined by Hank, Fiona, our horse, and our goats - braying, neighing, and bleating out of pure excitement to eat.

They have a shaded stall, but we often let them roam around. Our animals are our family.

Burros are a working animal physically built for this type of job. We prioritize the health and wellbeing of our animals. If a burro is sick, they won’t be in rotation until cleared by the vet.

Our burros are very loving and very loved. desertbeerburros.com

What’s hot for tween and teen bedrooms? How can you create a productive homework space? Which storage solutions are best? What’s the correlation between child psychology and interior design?

Valley design experts dish the answers. Here’s what’s trending when it comes to tween/teen bedrooms.

FRIENDLYINTERIORTRENDS

WE ASKED FOUR INTERIOR DESIGNERS TO WEIGH IN ON WHAT’S TRENDING WHEN IT COMES CREATING FUNCTIONAL SPACES FOR FAMILIES

Meg Behrens

Founder/Lead Designer, Meg Behrens Design

Bohemian Vibes: Think colorful textiles, macrame wall hangings, and layered rugs. Incorporate eclectic patterns and textures for a cozy atmosphere. Plants, rattan furniture, and string lights add to the vibe, creating a free-spirited space.

Minimalist Design: Minimalism is popular for those who prefer clean lines and clutter-free spaces. Opt for sleek, simple furniture and neutral color palettes. Keep decor and accessories to a minimum, focusing on functionality. Utilize storage solutions like built-in closets and under-bed drawers for an organized, streamlined look.

Vintage Revival: Nostalgic elements like vinyl records, vintage posters, and mid-century modern furniture are totally trending. Mix and match different eras. Thrift store finds and DIY projects add character, allowing teens to express their individuality.

Tech Integration: Tweens/teens often seek spaces that seamlessly integrate innovative features. Consider incorporating smart home devices like voice-controlled speakers, smart lighting systems, and wireless charging pads. Create designated tech zones with built-in outlets and cable management solutions for gaming consoles.

Personalization: Allow tweens/teens to express their interests and hobbies through decor align with their favorite things, like athletes or bands. Display customized wall decals, artwork, and photos.

The key to creating dedicated homework space for kids involves balancing aesthetic appeal with practical functionality.

Space Planning: Start by evaluating the available space and determining the best layout for the homework area, considering natural light, traffic flow, and proximity to distractions. Arrange furniture to allow efficient movement ensuring kids can access their supplies.

Ergonomic Design: Focus on comfort and ergonomics when choosing furniture. Select a desk and chair that are adjustable to fit your child’s growing height and posture. Ensure the desk surface is large enough for study materials and electronic devices.

Storage Solutions: Incorporate storage solutions to keep supplies organized and accessible with shelves, cubbies, and drawers. Maximize vertical space with wall-mounted organizers or floating shelves and have dedicated spots for each item.

Lighting Design: Illuminate the study area with a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a well-lit and inviting atmosphere. Maximize natural light by positioning the desk near windows. Supplement with desk lamps or adjustable spotlights for adequate illumination.

Personalization: Add elements that reflect your child’s personality and interests creating a sense of ownership and pride in their study area, such as decorative accents and artwork.

To seamlessly transition a younger child’s room to a tween/teen room, avoid overly specific patterns or themes early on. For example, if you want an ocean theme for a kid’s space, you can still get the same effect by picking a more neutral blue wall paint or classic blue striped wallpaper. You can add the room “theme” through art, bedding, and accessories- all easy to swap when your kids want something new.

From an interior design perspective, kids and pets in the home require more care when it comes to sourcing fabrics and furniture. As an interior designer, we’re all about details even asking the animal’s fur color because if you have a black cat, you might not want a light sofa. We use stain and soil resistant fabrics in households with kids.

We always review the budget and comfort zone for spending on kids’ furniture. Most of the time, kids grow out of things quickly so parents shouldn’t invest too much into a kid’s space. There are select core pieces, however, that should last for years, but smaller accent pieces shouldn’t break the bank.

Mackenzie Collier

My journey into interior design was shaped by a rich background in child psychology and luxury childcare. Today, as a foster mom and adoptive mom of two, I’m passionate about designing environments that support children’s wellbeing.

Based on child psychology research, our “five senses” approach to interior design can have a profound impact on a child’s development and mental health.

Sight: Research shows that colors, artwork, and lighting can influence a child’s mood and cognitive development. Soft, soothing hues promote relaxation, while vibrant colors stimulate creativity and play.

Sound: According to studies, soft background music or natural sounds create a calming atmosphere, while noise-dampening materials like rugs and curtains help create a peaceful environment. Encouraging children to explore music enhances their auditory experiences.

Touch: Tactile experiences are essential for young children’s development. Soft bedding, textured surfaces, and interactive play mats stimulate sensory exploration and fine motor skills.

Smell: Pleasant scents, like lavender or chamomile, have a calming effect on children, contributing to better sleep and overall wellbeing. Access to fresh air is also important.

Taste: Creating inviting dining areas encourages positive mealtime experiences, supporting healthy eating habits and family bonding.

Home Management to the Rescue

AN INNOVATIVE SOLUTION FOR SIMPLIFYING YOUR LIFESTYLE

Adrienne Orris, Lifestyle Simplicity

We’ve heard of personal assistants, and we’ve heard of home organizers, but the latest trend is an innovative elevation of both combined. Introducing lifestyle management- an extra hand doing the things you don’t want to do, don’t have time to do, or forget to do.

Consider a home manager an extra set of ears, eyes, and hands keeping your household under control.

We sat down with Adrienne Orris, owner of Lifestyle Simplicity, who dives into the beauty, nature, and duties of her home management biz.

WHAT IS LIFESTYLE SIMPLICITY?

Home/estate management is essentially the efficient operation of your household. Lifestyle Simplicity oversees the management of large estates or multiple properties. Responsibilities include supervising staff, managing property maintenance, handling finances, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.

In addition, the company keeps home organization intact, focusing on creating efficient systems for storage, arranging items for optimal accessibility, and helping maintain a seamless home environment.

As your personal aide, Lifestyle Simplicity provides administrative support to busy individuals. Duties often include managing schedules, booking appointments, running errands, and assisting with personal tasks.

WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR THIS?

An estate manager is needed for several reasons. Large estates or multiple properties require extensive oversight, including maintenance, repairs, and renovations. This is handled in the “Complex Property Management” division.

Managing a team of household staff, such as gardeners, cleaners, and security personnel, requires coordination and supervision. Estate managers supervise staff performance and schedules.

Estate managers are also available to handle budgeting, bill payments, and financial planning for the property, ensuring all expenses are tracked and managed effectively.

For properties that host events or gatherings, an estate manager coordinates logistics, vendors, and preparations to ensure successful execution.

WHAT WON’T YOU DO FOR ME?

An estate manager typically does not perform tasks that fall outside their managerial and supervisory roles. Specifically, they usually will not perform routine cleaning, caregiving (children/elderly), manual labor, cooking,

or highly specialized tasks (like legal advising). Most home managers do not run errands, but Lifestyle Simplicity offers services that include errand tasks (such as making looming Amazon returns sitting idle in your trunk).

HOW DO YOU HELP FAMILIES WHO LOVE TO TRAVEL?

Lifestyle Simplicity researches and coordinates all travel aspects including flights, trains, and car rentals, ensuring the best routes and schedules to meet your needs. Additionally, they assist in obtaining necessary travel documents, such as passports.

Their team finds and books the most suitable accommodations whether it’s luxury hotels, private villas, or serviced apartments as well as curates detailed travel itineraries- dining reservations and activity planning.

WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE WITH YOUR SERVICES?

Lifestyle Simplicity has yet to deny a client request.

HOW CAN BUSY FAMILIES BENEFIT FROM LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT?

Home managers save you time. By utilizing such services, parents can focus on their children, work, and personal interests rather than dealing with property-related tasks. This, in turn, reduces stress and provides peace of mind.

Regular upkeep and proactive maintenance prevent issues from escalating. More so, dedicating someone to manage expenses can potentially save families money with a better budgeting system.

Lifestyle Simplicity tailors services to meet specific needs and preferences of the family, ensuring personalized and attentive care.

Services offered through convenient monthly packages.

5 Red Flags on Ingredient Labels

GROCERY SHOP SMART! WITH KIDS GOING BACK TO SCHOOL, HERE ARE EASY WAYS TO ENSURE A HEALTHY HOME

PHOTOGRAPHY

As families prep for back-to-school, one of the most common questions I get asked is about nutrition. Here are 5 red flags when it comes to deciphering ingredient labels and ensuring a healthy home.

RED FLAG #1:   ARTIFICIAL COLORS AND FLAVORINGS

Health concerns with artificial colors include cancer/tumor growth, hyperactivity in children, allergies, migraines, indigestions, etc. “Artificial Flavors” is known to cause cancer, increased gut disorders, and have an impact on brain health.

RED FLAG #2:   MSG (MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE)

This flavor enhancer is found in some dressings, soups, frozen dinners, dry package dinners, Asian cuisines, select chips, seasonings, and more. Studies show MSG consumption increases metabolic disorders and can be addictive (that’s why you can’t put down that bag of chips).

RED FLAG #3: HEALTH CLAIMS

Terms like “All Natural,” a “Good Source of 9 Vitamins and Minerals,” and “Fiber Plus Antioxidants” can be misleading. This lingo is often used on sugary Snapple drinks and morning treats like Pop Tarts. This verbiage is ultimately a luring distraction for highly processed foods. If a product has to “showboat” how healthy it is, be skeptical.

RED FLAG #4:  LAUNDRY LIST OF INGREDIENTS

Long story short, stick to foods with 10 or less ingredients.

RED FLAG #5:  SUGAR-CODED WORDS

There are over 200 different names for sugar! Avoid getting foods with ingredients of words ending in “ose” (glucose, fructose, lactose, dextrose, maltose, sucrose). More red flag ingredient words include syrup, juice, and nectar.

FINAL THOUGHT (AND A QUESTION I GET ASKED A LOT)...  DOES ORGANIC MEAN GLUTEN FREE?

No! Organic Certifications are issued by the USDA certifying it’s grown without the use of prohibited substances, fertilizers, and pesticides; it also must be free of bioengineered (GMO) ingredients. Gluten-free foods simply do not contain any gluten, pertaining to wheat, rye, barley, or triticale.

1. Are you Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is the only recognized board for Plastic Surgeons. To obtain this certification, a surgeon must complete a 6-to-8-year training program and pass both a written and oral examination. While any doctor can become a “certified cosmetic surgeon,” only surgeons who complete this rigorous training will be verified by the ABPS. Be sure to verify your surgeon’s certification.

2. What is the follow up plan?

Many patients have lengthy procedures with limited or no follow-up. Since the after care is as important as the surgery, any procedure should include multiple visits with the actual surgeon.

3. What do you do when things don’t go right?

No matter how talented or skilled a surgeon may be, complications happen. Be skeptical of any surgeon that claims to have a perfect track record or promises unrealistic results. How a surgeon handles their complications is important. Do they personally treat you? Do they charge for revisions? Such items should be addressed pre-operatively.

4. How many of these operations do you do?

Some surgeons have very niche training while others have a broader focus. Do not be afraid to ask your surgeon’s comfort level with your surgery. Also, be sure to review photographs and read reviews.

5. Why should I pick you?

Ultimately, how a doctor answers this question will either strike a chord that makes you comfortable or send you running. Not only is a surgeon’s intelligence, training, and ability important, but you must also like the person and feel comfortable at their office.

Dr. Lisa Bienstock Shares the Scoop on All Things Pearly Whites & Dental Health for Kids

WHY DOES MY KID GRIND THEIR TEETH?

It’s common for young kids to grind their teeth; they often outgrow it when their permanent teeth come in. There are no connections between tooth grinding and issues with behavior like anxiety.

WHEN SHOULD MY KID NEEDS SEE AN ORTHO?

The American Academy of Orthodontics recommends your child see an Orthodontist by seven. This is a growth and guidance visit establishing a baseline to be more proactive than reactive. However, if there are breathing issues, prolonged pacifier/bottle usage, thumb sucking, or tongue thrusting, you should get in sooner.

BRACES OR INVISALIGN- WHICH TO DO?

It depends on the child and their level of responsibility. You wear Invisalign a minimum of 20 hours a day. That means every time your child eats or drinks anything other than water, they need to take them out, eat, then brush/floss before putting them back in.

Braces are cemented, so your child cannot lose them, but brackets can break. They must watch what they eat (no gummy bears or hard candies). With braces, you should also brush 3-4 times a day.

WHAT FOODS CAUSE CAVITIES?

Sugars, starchy foods, soda, sports drinks, gummy candy and more. And when it comes to teeth staining, foods like dark fruits (blueberries), dark drinks (Pepsi), and purple grape juice will tint your teeth. However, dentists can rid stains at your child’s cleaning.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY KID  BREAKS A TOOTH?

Save the piece of the broken tooth as dentists can often reattach it! Put the piece of tooth in milk, water, or Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution, and bring it to your pediatric dentist. If an adult tooth comes out unexpectedly, hold it by the crown, re-implant it into the socket, hold it in, and get to your pediatric dentist ASAP.
