As you read this, I’ll hopefully be lounging in my pool or be on a trip somewhere. After all, isn’t that what summer is all about? Relaxation, exploration, and fun?
Honestly, I’m not sure who is more excited when that last bell rings at school, signaling the start of summer break—me or my kids!
Even if I’m still busy with work, summer just seems more relaxing—the summer sun, the call of the pool, the break from the constant juggle of homework and after-school activities. It’s like a breath of fresh (albeit hot, here in Arizona!) air.
We’ve got plenty of summer fun for you in this issue. We share some favorite summer wines; local seafood dishes; and a company making eco-friendly summerwear; and we showcase some amazing yachts in Baja, Mexico. I’m in!
I hope you find time to relax and enjoy your days this month. Enjoy the issue and stay cool!

Well, let’s just say that when it comes to weather in 2023, we have been pretty blessed with cooler temperatures. Of course, July is always consistent—hot! It’s hard to complain, though, when we have had a cooler-than-normal spring …
Enough about the weather—let’s talk about fun in the summer! As many of you know, my family always takes adventures in our RV for the month of July. Yes, we take our four boys. Well, let’s face it, they are the size of men (all but one), reaching over 6 feet tall now! Needless to say, it’s cozy! We still love it, and as long as our kids want to hang out with us, we will take it!
This year we will be hugging the Pacific coastline up through California, Oregon, Washington, and into Canada, up around and into Banff, and then back down through Montana, Idaho, Utah, and back down to Arizona. Our plan is to slow-roll and take in the breathtaking sights on our drive—a bucket-list path for sure!
Whether you escape the heat for a bit or stick around Arizona, there is no shortage of things to do right here in our community! Visit one of our beautiful local resorts for cool pool dips and delicious food and drink, visit our local lakes for time on the water with a boat, visit our endless culinary spots to try some new cuisine, or go sit in a local ice-cold movie theater and escape reality for a bit!
Whatever you do, take time for some R&R! One nice thing about summertime in Arizona is that things tend to slow down, giving us some freedom to relax a bit!
Be grateful, be kind, and live well,

Looking for a wine that pairs perfectly with pool parties? Perhaps some vino best suited for vacation? A few bottles for the beach? Here are some wines fantastic for fun in the sun and tailor-made to sip in the summer shade.
2021 CLIF FAMILY VIOGNIER
Upon opening this small-production wine from organically farmed estate vineyards, bold floral aromatics perfume the air. To the taste, the predominant flavor on the palate is ripe Asian pear, which is smaller and more concentrated than a standard pear, with a refreshing crisp sweetness. It is balanced with a hint of citrus. $42. ClifFamily.com
ARTICLE BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDEDLINNE CALODO 2022 CONTRARIAN
While a person who is a contrarian opposes popular opinion, this dizzyingly delicious blend of Grenache Blanc, Viognier, and Picpoul Blanc will be popular in the opinion of all who try it. On the nose expect some zippy tropical fruit. Each sip offers guava and sweet apples, and then finishes with a salinity that feels very beachy. $68. LinneCalodo.com
Tickle the nose and the tastebuds with this effervescent elixir. It opens with aromas of raspberry preserves and citrus. When sipped, a blend of pomegranate, blood orange, and a wee bit of ripe pear come together in perfect harmony. $45. HalterRanch.com
Given that the 2017 harvest of this world-famous chardonnay was smaller than most, this vintage has a bright crispness that literally tastes like summer. There is honeysuckle and pear, but also some zesty, oak-kissed citrus and a touch of white peach. $42. JordanWinery.com
A truly unique blend of a variety of white grapes from both old and new vines first offers a bouquet of roasted pineapple fresh off the grill. While still present, notes of pear, apple, and orange blossoms then sneak in before a finish of stone, lime, lemon drops, and mint. $125. CliffLedeVineyards.com
SAUVIGNON BLANC
Symphony is right! This is a buzzy blend of Meyer lemon and ultra-ripe peach with all things tropical, especially banana, mango, and coconut. Just as good on ice, it has a tingly zip of acid but finishes smooth as silk. $36. SilverTridentWinery.com
Somewhere Sunny Brings Sunshine and Sustainability to Fashion
A well-made piece of clothing can make you look good on the outside, but a sustainably and well-made piece of clothing can make you feel good on the inside, too.
That’s the premise behind Somewhere Sunny, a local company founded by Shea Beck. With a mission to create beautiful clothes made from recycled materials, Beck and his company are well on their way to making customers look and feel good, all while protecting them from harmful rays.
“We’re a swimwear brand making eco-conscious decisions every step of the way,” he explains.
With most of its current swimwear line made from 88% post-consumer water bottles (an average of 12 per item), it’s clear Beck is delivering on that premise.
As a parent, Beck saw the issues of fast fashion firsthand with his own clothes, as well as his daughter’s.
CONTINUED >
“With most childwear, it’s used for a few months, and then you either toss it or donate it,” he says. “From the beginning, we made a decision to not purchase fast fashion—things that couldn’t be passed down to a sibling or to friends. That got us thinking … how can we take it a step further? How can we make sustainable clothing for adults?”
The men’s swimwear items, as well as tops for both genders, are as fashionable and functional as they are sustainable. And Beck is just getting started.
“In five years, we will be 50 to 60 product lines deep,” he explains. “Everything from a full line of women’s swimwear, tops, cover-ups, etc., then the same thing for men. We definitely will be net zero for carbon footprint and leading the charge on going beyond recycled materials.”
It’s that positive outlook that gave Beck the idea for the company name and its motto.
“We’re called Somewhere Sunny, and our tagline is ‘Find Your Sun,’” says Beck. “I came up with the tagline first. I’ve battled depression and anxiety, and I always took myself to a happy place, which for me is a sunny place. So I came up with ‘Find Your Sun,’ which for some people is reading a book or going to the gym, but it’s all about happiness.”
With a perfect mix of fashion, sustainability, and happiness, it’s clear that Somewhere Sunny is just what the Valley needs.

Sail Your Cares Away on a Luxurious Private Yacht in Baja, Mexico
“There is nothing quite like exploring the Sea of Cortez by yacht, and our BookBaja fleet provides a dichotomy of escaping yet connecting at the same time,” says Kent Harrington, founder of BookBaja.com
The company offers a selection of Mexico’s most lavish yacht charters—think luxurious furnishings, private chefs, curated excursions, helipads, and even a Turkish hammam. Each is managed by carefully vetted staff who understand the unique needs of discerning and adventurous travelers.
While BookBaja.com has 16 yachts available, its two most popular may be Rule No. 1 and La Datcha.
Rule No. 1 is a 130-foot Westport featuring a new 2022 refit, making it an ideal Baja adventure yacht perfect for exploring the most desolate parts of the peninsula in luxury. There are five guest rooms, a bar and dining table on each of the top three decks, workout equipment to turn the bridge deck into a private gym, and a hot
tub to soak in on the sun deck—perfect for taking in the magic landscape where rugged mountains meet the ocean.
La Datcha superyacht has an elevator and helipad, a fully serviced gym, a Jacuzzi on deck, a wellness center with a Turkish hammam, and a dedicated treatment room.
The stunning yachts and spectacular service are rivaled only by the area itself.
“I always say Baja is a time machine,” Harrington says. “It is like the region has been suspended in the early 1900s and it is the coolest thing to show travelers. What also makes Baja special is the geography and proximity to some major bucket list experiences. Travelers in the West can drive six hours from San Diego and be swimming with whale sharks or hop on a 90-minute flight from Los Angeles and be swimming in turquoise waters, hiking dormant volcanoes, and swimming with dolphins.

Though landlocked, resourceful chefs are finding ways to bring exceedingly fresh fish to local diners. Here are some of the most sensational seafood options available all summer long.

Z TEJAS
These Blackened Catfish Tacos ($14) have been a menu standard for years. They are slightly sweet with a moist texture and less flaky than other whitefish. MARCELLINO RISTORANTE
This Zuppa di Pesce ($38) is an authentic Italian fish soup, bursting with sauteed shrimp, clams, mussels, calamari, salmon, and scallops. The rich combination is bathed in a bowl of tomato sauce, garlic, and white wine, and paired with fresh bread. MarcellinoRistorante.com

While known for its high-end cuts of aged beef, Bourbon & Bones’ Alaskan King Crab Legs (market price) are a must. They are specially imported and cooked just long enough for the iconic sweetness to emerge before being chilled and plated with lemon, cocktail sauce, and ample butter. BourbonAndBonesAZ.com
Available at all six VIG locations, the Salt Seared Tuna ($20) starts with a brick-shaped block of scalding-hot salt. Fresh tuna is placed on top, as is yuzu-soy sauce, pickled onions, and wonton chips, cooking to the diner’s preference tableside. TheVIG.us

Marina DeWit and James Bernau became longtime family friends after meeting through their children’s mutual activities for over a decade. For many, Covid brought lots of changes and created a pivotal opportunity for these entrepreneurs to co-own a new business for the community. With their previous experience in both corporate and small business, they became the local dealership for One Day Doors & Closets of Arizona.
New interior doors, whether bedroom, pantry, closet, or others, can completely change the look of your home. And for many, their houses are getting older—meaning the doors look outdated or bland and reflect on the rest of the home’s style. The challenge for homeowners is that replacing interior doors has always been a substantial undertaking.
Until recently.
Choosing doors at a big box store typically means minimal options of door styles and sizes, along with the fact that doors off the shelf will not fit a homeowner’s existing doorjambs. Door installation is difficult in existing homes due to foundation settling, uneven flooring, odd door sizes, and bowed jambs. It becomes an invasive house project that involves removing existing doorframes, installing pre-hung doors, patching, and painting, while taking weeks of living in a construction zone with a contractor or handyman constantly being present.
“We’re Arizona’s premier interior door replacement company and have the highest customer rating over any other company,” says Bernau. “We replace your interior doors in just one day without any messy construction in your house. The doors are precisely measured to the existing frames, custom crafted, and professionally painted, ensuring beautiful doors that arrive at the home and are installed in just a few hours.”
The pair opened for business just over a year ago and have been awarded “Rookies of the Year” by One Day Doors & Closets because of their commitment to quality and high standards of
customer service. They have installed over 2,500 doors in the Phoenix area and have high ratings and reviews.
With the revolutionary 3D measuring technology, One Day Doors provides custom-fit interior doors without replacing the door frames.
DeWit adds, “We save you time and money while transforming your home to the style you want, stress-free.”
One Day Doors & Closets of Arizona offers a large selection of styles for interior doors, as well as closet doors and barn doors. Recently, their small business expanded the factory production to include closet organizers.
“All of our closet designs are custom for the person(s) and custom for the space. We have integrated design software that provides the customer with a 3D image of what the closet will look like before they purchase,” DeWit says. “And that design goes straight to our unique manufacturing system so the customer can be confident in what they will receive.”
Bernau adds, “It is an exciting venture for us to offer an additional service in designing and implementing a functional space in the home.”
Customers can visit the showroom located in North Phoenix to make selections to fit their unique tastes and transform their homes.
“We can replace 20-25 doors in just one day,” Bernau states. “For most contractors, that would take over two weeks. And we pride ourselves on the white glove service. We’re registered contractors and have over 30 years of combined experience with our employees.”
He continues, “We make it a smooth experience from beginning to end.”
CUSTOMERS CAN EASILY TRANSFORM THEIR HOMES IN FIVE SIMPLE STEPS:
1. Call for a free, in-home consultation.
2. Visit the showroom to choose the door style, weight, paint color, and hardware options.
3. The one-day measure technician will measure the door frames with the company’s proprietary 3D measuring technology.
4. The new doors will be custom-crafted and painted in the One Day Doors & Closets’ factory.
a few hours.
The partners share that what they most enjoy about the business, besides the great team, is helping customers see their visions become a reality and exceeding expectations.
“We’re a small local business that can provide customers with the best home improvement experience. Our doors can be installed in record time without mess, hassle, or extreme cost. You will love what doors do!” DeWit concludes.
