David Duran, Randy Harding, Ana Launes,

Welcome to our Pets and Kids Issue! CAN I TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVE OUR KITTIES? Doug and I have two adorable cats, both rescues, who are the delight of our lives. Katie, an orange and white long-hair

(see her pictured), and Frankie, a beige tomcat with blue, blue eyes (that's why he's called Frankie, after Sinatra!). Unfortunately, he wouldn't sit still for the photo! Both our cats love to be petted and have their designated locations. Frankie's is on the couch between Doug and I watching TV, and Katie has several. When I get up in the morning, she's right there by my dressing table reading for a thorough petting session. She especially goes after Doug when he's ready for bed and climbs on his chest for some serious kneading. They both talk to us, and we love that. Having no children of our own, they are our kids! You will enjoy reading about families, whose pets are the delight of their lives. And, one of our writers, Deirdre Michalski, shares her precious journey with her dog Riley, whose health is managed with multiple medications. We're also featuring some local

ONLY YOU

CAN PREVENT RATTLESNAKE BITES! Vaccinate your dog with the rattlesnake vaccine at Newport Animal Hospital! The vaccine works by creating protective antibodies that help neutralize venom, so dogs experience less pain and swelling after a snake bite. This Vaccine can give you crucial minutes to get to a facility with antivenom.

7 Easy tips to be aware to keep your pups happy and healthy! 1. While out walking, controlling your dog with a leash may be your best safety device. 2. Do not allow your dog to explore holes in the ground or dig under logs, flat rocks or planks. 3. Stay on open paths where there is an opportunity for snakes to be visible. 4. Keep nighttime walks to a minimum: rattlesnakes are nocturnal most of the year. 5. If you hear a rattlesnake, keep your dog at your side until you locate the snake: then move away.

6. Off-trail hiking with an unleashed dog may stir up a snake and you may be as likely a victim as your dog. 7. If your dog seems unusually curious about “something” hidden in the grass, back off immediately until you know what it is.

Below are brief descriptions of a few of the exciting cities visited during this 8-day adventure in Germany and the Netherlands. AMSTERDAM Get acquainted with the Netherlands’ capital city in just 24 hours. Your host will help you get the lay of the land. From then on, Amsterdam is yours to discover. Your host will give you a 24-hour public transportation ticket so you can explore at your own pace. HAARLEM Haarlem is a city outside of Amsterdam in the northwest Netherlands. Beer in Cologne.

COLOGNE Two words: German beer. It's world-famous for a reason, and part of that reason is here. Step off the gangplank and take a gander at the amazing spires of Cologne Cathedral on your way to Dom Platte. As the epicenter of the city’s nighttime pub scene, it’s a perfect place to drink Kölsch beer and mingle. What’s so special about Kölsch beer? It’s brewed from mainly Pilsner salts right there in Cologne, Germany, and served in a fancy glass. Save room and come thirsty. KOBLENZ The German Corner, a.k.a. Koblenz, one of the country’s oldest and most beautiful towns, is made up of vineyards, forests and exotic mountain ranges that form the backdrop to a town with more than 2,000 years of storied history. Whether you wind up along the Rhine shores or inside one of many cozy taverns under the stars, you’ll be eating, drinking and lounging like you live there.

Pets Rule! PETS ADD ANOTHER DIMENSION TO THE FAMILY DYNAMIC

Tara and Chris Burk with daughters Avery, left, and Addison, right, and their Australian Shepherd Max 22

Newport Beach Lifestyle | August 2018

WE’VE INCLUDED SOME COMMUNITY PEOPLE IN OUR FEATURE ON PETS AND KIDS TO SHOW HOW IMPORTANT PETS ARE TO FAMILY LIFE. Whether dogs or cats - canaries or turtles - it is evident that their addition brings joy to the families who take them in. THE BURK FAMILY Chris, Tara, Avery (9) and Addison (7) Burk have had Max, an Australian Shepherd, with them since March, 2016. Tara flew to Pine Ridge Aussies in Nebraska to pick up the puppy. “He was a bit big for nine weeks, and we barely met the in-flight requirements,” she says. Since then, Max has become an integral part of the Burk's family life. “He is always the first one to greet me with his big waggly behind (Aussies have no tails), which always brings a smile,” Chris says. According to the family, Max has been a great family dog. He is always happy and likes to chill with them. If he’s hungry or has a need, he will make cute dog sounds, and he always sits and waits for someone to say ‘okay’ before he begins eating. The family has a bell by the back door, and he rings it anytime he needs to go outside. The girls say Max has an arsenal of tricks: sit, stay, down, high five, give me your paw, walk, turn around, etc. “I love it when Max double high-fives me,” Addison adds. “My favorite trick is when he dances with us on his hind legs,” Avery says. Chris and Tara have given Max the task of waking up the girls each morning. Max pushes open the door and gives them kisses to wake them up. “He takes that job very seriously, and the girls love it,” Chris says, smiling. But, most of all, the family says Max is cuddly and affectionate and always seems to know when someone needs a hug or kiss. “He has been an unconditional best friend,” Tara shares.

THE CURCI FAMILY Janet

Curci

and

her

grandson

Jonathon, who she raised, brought Frankie into their lives in an unusual way. Jonathan was 16 years old and doing his Mater Dei High School service requirement by volunteering at his grade school’s annual Our Lady Queen of Angels auction. He took care of the live auction Lhasapoo puppy (Lhasa Apso and Poodle mix) through dinner and showed him off to attendees to gain interest in bidding. Falling in love with the puppy, Jonathan ended up bidding on him (he had a credit card on file and a bidding card), eventually winning him. Mother Janet was at the movie theater and was very surprised to hear the news. It didn’t take long before Frankie became the love of their lives. “He loves to roll over and have his belly rubbed,” Janet says. “And, he likes to groan when he’s really loving it.” Jonathan adds: “Frankie can be very loving. He loves to lick you when he sees you and fall asleep while watching TV.” There is a cantankerous side. “If Frankie’s been home alone all day, when you return, he likes to ‘chew you out,” Janet says. “He will bark and whine, then run over to you and turn over for a belly rub!” As he grows older, the Curcis say Frankie has become grumpy. He sleeps on the bed and growls if you move while he’s sleeping. “He needs his beauty rest,” Janet laughs. “Animals are magical creatures, each with their own individual personalities. It doesn’t matter what kind of day you’re having, Frankie, who is nearly 10 years old, is always there to put a smile on your face and cuddle up to you,” Jonathan says. “He has enriched our lives in countless ways,” Janet concludes.

Jack and Jacqui Penner with Blue Point Siamese Sassy and a photo of late husband and father Mark Penner in the background

THE PENNER FAMILY Jacqui Penner and her son Jack, 18, have two cats. The Blue Point Siamese, Sassy, now 12, was adopted for Jack when he was six years old, and Max, a Tuxedo cat, now 10, was adopted for Jacqui two years later. Jacqui says that Max greets her at the door, is very social and thinks he’s a dog. “He talks to everyone in our house,” she says, “and when I get home, he jumps on my bed and strikes a pose until I give him some love and affection.” Jacqui says that Sassy adores Jack. “She’s cuddly cute,” Jack says of Sassy. “If I’m feeling down, she’s there for me. She likes to sit on the couch with me and purr. I don’t even have to pet her, and she purrs up a storm! She’s a good companion.” Max, the Penner's Tuxedo cat

There are a few problems. Jack says Sassy poops on his bed when he leaves, and, much to both their distress, Max loves to pounce on Sassy. The compelling story about Sassy is that when Jacqui’s husband and Jack’s father Mark was dying of cancer in May, 2017, Sassy, who never paid any attention to Mark, suddenly was resting on the sofa with him and sitting on his lap. Near the end, when Mark went to the hospital for more tests, Sassy became ill and had to be taken to the vet. The vet thought it might be cancer, to Jacqui’s horror, but was hoping it was an infection. Mark passed away, and Sassy did get better. “Sassy went in Mark’s room after he died and stayed there for two days,” Jacqui says. “She missed him.” August 2018 | Newport Beach Lifestyle

The sand is merely steps away, where the kids can have fun too playing and splashing in the sun. Executive Chef Ryan Sumner is heading the Lighthouse kitchen in a big way. Opened in December, 2015, Chef Ryan has made waves in the community with his creative menus and his constant pursuit of making everything better and better. Classically French-trained, Chef Sumner

At a very young age “working in my parent’s store–Irvine Ranch Market–I was exposed to a lot of different ingredients which really sparked my interest.” Chef Sumner is elevating what you may expect from a casual beach side café with popular dishes such as their seared Hoakkaido scallops with baby zucchini and cauliflower puree, that keep travelers and locals alike coming back for more. Most recently, Chef Sumner was chosen as one of Orange County’s top chefs to participate in the annual Table for 10 charity event held at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort benefiting the Teen Project and Vocational Visions on March 11, 2018.

Ico n s and R isin g St a rs AWARD-WINNING ARTISTS LIGHT UP THE BARCLAY ARTICLE HELENA DANOVICH

PROCURING AWARD-WINNING ARTISTS IS A CHALLENGING TASK FOR ANY PERFORMING ARTS VENUE; CURATING A SINGLE SEASON WITH ARTISTS WHO HAVE COLLECTIVELY AMASSED SUCH A GREAT NUMBER OF HIGH CALIBER AWARDS AND NOMINATIONS IS INDEED A FABULOUS FEAT. But, Irvine Barclay Theatre has managed to do just that. And the numbers are staggering! 117 Grammy nominations; 49 Grammy Award wins; 21 Tony nominations; 12 Tony Award wins; 18 Emmy nominations; 4 Emmy Award wins, 5 Oscar nominations. Plus, there’s even one Pulitzer Prize and one Royal Knighthood.

Bebe Neuwirth is featured in the Broadway/Cabaret Series

Special appearance featuring comedian/actor Jon Lovitz on September 29, 2018

The Barclay has been bringing award-winning talent to Orange County audiences for nearly thirty years. One of southern California’s leading presenters of jazz, the theatre’s expanded jazz@thebarclay series leads off with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis; its ever-popular Broadway/Cabaret series includes such

Broadway heavyweights like Bebe Neuwirth and Sutton Foster and other Broadway stars who have a storied history of appearing in more than 30 Broadway shows. A performance of Béla Fleck, a 15-time Grammy winner who has been nominated in more categories than any instrumentalist in Grammy history, is a true treat. Along with award-winning superstars and legends, the Barclay is also showcasing rising stars. Kalani Pe’a, from Hawai’i, won the Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album in 2017 and made history by being the first Hawaiian recording artist to ever win in the category. A jazz prodigy, Grace Kelly, the 25-year-old Korean American saxophonist, performed at President Obama’s inauguration at 16, was a regular on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and has headlined at all major jazz festivals, from Montreux to Newport to Montréal.

The Dance Series features the Martha Graham Dance Company

The Barclay’s audacious programming is international in scope: its signature Dance series features the Martha Graham Dance Company alongside eminent companies from Cuba and Israel; the National Geographic Live speaker series includes primatologist Mireya Mayor, the “female Indiana Jones.” The British theater screenings from London (with Benedict Cumberbatch and Sir Ian McKellen), the enchanting family events and daring cirque presentations, are all audience favorites. In January, a cast of over 30 gifted animals will scurry across the Barclay stage, wowing their wide-eye fans with their clever canine tricks and feline smarts. These lovable creatures, all stars of the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater, were finalists on America’s Got Talent. With a penchant for unpredictable charm and cuteness, these extraordinary

GIVING BACK THROUGH EDUCATION EDUCATING KIDS HOW TO CARE FOR THEIR PETS

THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BY CONTRIBUTING TO VARIOUS CAUSES, BUT ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL WAYS IS THROUGH EDUCATION. Educating your family, especially your children, with regard to pet care is an integral part of that education. Our pet experts agree that a family who disciplines and cares for their pet using the same commands and behaviors will have fewer problems. Inconsistency by one family member in the treatment or care of a pet can undo months of training. Several of our experts who offer educational support to families and children about their pets are outlined below.

out with the best of intentions. I cuddled our new bundle of joy and took him to behavior classes and slowly introduced him to other dogs. It all started out so well. I am of Irish descent, so I thought the name Riley was befitting. I was on pace for success and yet, somehow, I knew that was just a daydream. I somehow took a left turn. Actually, I am not sure if it was Riley or me who first took the detour, but it has certainly occurred. Together, we have somehow “jumped the shark,” as they say. My six-pound Maltese, Riley, is a spoiled little brat. There I said it! I feel better just making that pronouncement to all of you. I know I am not alone in this whirlwind life as a pet owner. Somehow, it just happens. Riley has some major medical issues, so perhaps I just want to baby him. He takes six medicines each day, and his brain is actually larger than his skull, along with other issues, so it is quite serious and is managed by medications. We are so incredibly thankful to Dr. Wayne Berry, who is a neurology specialist at Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital. He and his team have saved Riley’s life on more than one occasion. I honestly do whatever I can to bring Riley joy. His favorite thing to do is walk (actually prance) around the lovely outdoor venue of Fashion Island. He meets other dogs and loves to visit the koi pond and peer at the fish. I know, someday we’ll be looking for a stroller so he can continue "living the life of Riley!”
