Home is Where the Heart is

Home. So much is contained in that little four-letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. While we make many memories outside the four walls of our homes, some of the purest, most meaningful memories are made at the kitchen table, in a child’s room reading a book, or at the first step in the living room.

During my journey with my kids, our home has looked different at certain times in our lives, but I always instilled in my kids’ hearts that our home is our safe place—a place to express the greatest joys, deepest pain, and everything in between. We have shared so much of this through our food at the table, games during the holidays, and the pain of loss when tragedy happens. Home is where we hold on to each other.

Home has personality. It tells our story about the things we love. We are proud to bring you our home issue and learn more about local businesses that help make and keep our homes up to our desired standards. We welcome people to see the inside of our worlds.

As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in your city, neighborhood, and home. We hear from readers who keep this magazine longer than just the month labeled on the cover every month. They say they hold on to it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

Cheers to you and the place you call HOME!

a fresh look

Giving furniture a second chance at life.

The secret to refreshing your living space isn’t buying new furniture—it’s rethinking what you already own and turning it into something beautiful. Reupholstery offers a chance to breathe new life into cherished pieces, from your beloved sofa to treasured family heirlooms. It’s an art form rooted in storytelling and craftsmanship.

Much like fashion, upholstery involves draping, shaping, and designing—but with furniture as the canvas. Each piece tells its own story, whether it’s a rocker being passed down through generations or a vintage chair waiting for a second chance.

Thoughtfully selected fabrics, precise techniques, and a commitment to quality elevate reupholstery from simple restoration to a true art form. Behind every reimagined piece is a skilled craftsperson with a ruler blending vision with expertise to create something both functional and charming.

“We live in a world of disposable furniture,” shared Melissa Terese Roark, owner of Melissa Terese Upholstery. “Older pieces often have better bones, and with some care, they can last another 30 to 50 years.”

The renewal process is smooth and involves working with clients through consultations that help them navigate the different choices of patterns, colors, and textures. This ensures every project has the ideal combination of aesthetic appeal, functionality, and personal style, resulting in a truly customized piece that complements the space it’s in. “Sometimes, people come in with one idea and leave with something entirely different, and it’s rewarding to help them step out of their comfort zone and see the true potential in their furniture,” Melissa added.

For DIY creators wanting to attempt to dive into upholstery, it’s best to start small. Dining chair seats or simple ottomans are manageable entry points. For larger or more complex pieces, calling a professional would make the most sense. “There’s so much

happening beneath the furniture surface,” explains Melissa. “It’s not just about appearance—it’s about making sure the structure is sound.”

Beyond the structural facets, the work can also be deeply personal. It incorporates elements of the original fabric into a reimagined creation, keeping a piece of the past that may be hidden on the inside of the chair. “I just like to pass on the vibe that this was something special. It had a story before it came to me, and now it’s continuing on, preserving its history,” shared Melissa. Creating keepsakes like pillows from old materials allows cherished memories to live on purposefully and meaningfully, blending sentimentality and practicality. Whether it’s a rocking chair for the new baby or reimagining a sofa with bold, modern fabric, the process is as rewarding as the results.

MELISSA TERESE UPHOLSTERY

Reupholstery is not just about fabric or furniture. It’s about the relationships and connections that are formed along the way. Melissa credits much of her success to the people around her, including her trusted assistant, Dave Snyder. “He’s my right arm,” expressed Melissa. Leading with their hearts, they have worked closely together to transform countless creations into beautifully revitalized treasures.  Before you invest in new furniture, consider the sentimental value of what you already own. Visit www.melissaterese.com to transform your cherished family heirloom into a timeless masterpiece that tells your story for generations to come.  Sometimes, all it takes is a great vision and the right touch to create something extraordinary.

BE Bold

REVITALIZING THE HEART OF THE HOME.

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE NUMANN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUX CONTENT CO.

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home. A space where families and friends spend time together, meals are created, and some of the best memories are made. Yet, the kitchen’s aesthetic plays a big role in its functionality and mood. For many years, stained wood cabinets were a staple in the kitchen space, but as trends change, homeowners are reimagining their kitchens with bold cabinet makeovers. The days of heavy, dark-stained wood cabinets are fading, replaced by clean neutrals and two-tone palettes. “It’s a massive transformation every time we go from dark-stained cabinets to something lighter,” says Ben Reising, owner of 360 Painting of Palm Harbor. Indeed, lighter and brighter hues like white and soft neutrals have become the go-to choice for many, offering a fresh and modern feel. White shaker cabinets remain a timeless favorite, but newer trends are introducing shades like soft gray, sea green, and even two-tone designs for added depth and personality.

While bold cabinet makeovers often evoke visions of vibrant colors or striking patterns, simplicity can be equally daring. Lighter shades, for instance, create a sense of openness and can make even smaller kitchens feel a lot more spacious. “It’s about maximizing the space you have,” explains Reising.

For those hesitant to fully embrace bold colors, consider starting small. Experimenting with accents or two-tone cabinets allows homeowners to embrace trends in a flexible, low-commitment way. A contrasting island or a pop of color on upper or lower cabinets adds contemporary flair without overwhelming the room.

Transforming kitchen cabinets isn’t just about slapping on a coat of paint. It’s a detailed process that requires attention to detail and expertise. “Cabinet painting is a niche in the painting industry,” Reising says. “There’s a lot of prep work involved—covering floors, counters, and appliances, enclosing the space to avoid overspray, and labeling each door to ensure everything goes back exactly where it belongs.”

that they tend to have longevity. White cabinets are classic and universally appealing, offering adaptability that complements various design preferences while helping maintain the style and resale value of your home.

Every project tells a story of a transformation, and for Ben Reising and his team, the most rewarding part is seeing the newly painted kitchen come to life. “It’s incredible how a simple change like painting cabinets can completely refresh a kitchen,” he says. “We love seeing the reactions from homeowners—it’s a reminder of why we do what we do.”

“We love seeing the reactions from homeowners— it’s a reminder of why we do what we do.”

The process usually takes around three to four days. “We want to be efficient because it takes the kitchen out of commission for a few days,” Ben shares. “It’s important to get the job done right, but also to minimize the disruption for the homeowner.”

— Ben Reising

With trends constantly evolving, a concern that some homeowners have with bold makeovers is whether their choices will stand the test of time. Trends come and go, and no one wants to be stuck with a dated kitchen in a few years. The best part about neutrals like white and gray is

The shift from stained cabinets to bold, modern designs isn’t just about following trends. It’s about creating a space that reflects the personality and needs of the family who lives there.

Whether it’s a crisp white finish or a daring twotone combination, the right cabinet makeover can turn a drab kitchen into the vibrant heart of the home. A bold cabinet makeover isn’t just about style—it’s about making the space feel lighter, brighter and more inviting for everyone who steps into it. THE PATH HOME

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY IS HELPING ACHIEVE THE HOME OWNERSHIP DREAM.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY TAMPA BAY GULFSIDE

For many, the dream of home ownership can feel just out of reach. Some are people you might not expect. Nurses, teachers and firefighters that are essential to our community, but not able to live within it because there is simply not enough affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity Tampa Bay Gulfside is bridging the gap, turning those dreams into reality.

There are many misconceptions about what Habitat for Humanity does. Many expect they are rehabbing older homes and giving them to the homeless. That couldn’t be further from the truth. “It’s 100% focused on new home construction. The homes are not free,” stated Mike Sutton, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Tampa Bay Gulfside. “What really sets us apart from other affordable housing opportunities is we provide a zero-interest mortgage.”

To qualify for a home, program members must meet several requirements, including committing to sweat equity in the form of volunteer hours as well as new homeowner education. “No one ever leaves Habitat without information. If they don’t fall in our guidelines, we’ll find another avenue for them. If they have stuff to work on, like cleaning up their credit, we guide them through that process,” shared Sutton. “If we want an amazing community, we need places for the working population to live.”

When hurricanes Helene and Milton hit, Habitat stepped in. While they collected materials for the community, they also took special care of their program members, guiding them through minor repairs, the insurance claim process for the few that needed it and even established a fund to help those who lost their jobs due to the storm make mortgage payments. One thing the storms did bring was more people in need of homes. “We had folks who lost everything, and their landlords just simply were not going to do anything to replace where they lived,” said Sutton.

“If we want an amazing community, we need places for the working population to live.”

“Every time we build a home and hand over keys to the family, it’s symbolic of breaking the cycle of poverty,” shared Sutton. To help Habitat continue to break that cycle, they need the support of the community. While donations are always welcome, they also need volunteers and community members to share their mission. Playing Around

Build family bonds and grow imagination in your backyard.

For many families, the backyard is more than just a patch of grass. It’s an extension of their home, where memories are made and bonds are strengthened. Making the most of how you use that space can have a huge impact for your family.

Pools are a great option, with many transforming their yards into oasis retreats. Others opt for artificial turf, creating a clean, low-maintenance aesthetic. An underrated option is the custom playground. Far from the metal swing sets of the past, these modern modular structures cater to everyone.

“Playgrounds are essential because they encourage kids to get outside, exercise, and spark their creativity,” shared Jennifer Winchester, owner of The Playground Pro. Her passion for creating family-friendly spaces is inspired by childhood memories of wooden playgrounds, which felt like entire worlds waiting to be explored.

Beyond the fun playgrounds provide, these custom spaces play a big role in development. Many include features like rock walls or tire football challenges,

which build muscles and coordination. Some even offer inclusive features, such as an ADA transfer station or a wheelchair-accessible swing, ensuring that even children with limited mobility can enjoy the playground. These additions foster problem-solving and creativity as children invent new games through imaginative play.

Parents also find value in these backyard escapes as a perfect way to bond with their kids. Whether pushing them on a swing or sharing laughter at the bottom of a slide, these moments foster trust and connection. “When you’re there with your kid, it shows them you care and spend time with them. Time is the most valuable thing you can give to anybody because you can never get that back,” added Winchester.

A backyard playground is more than just a play structure—it’s a space for growth, connection, and cherished family memories. If you’re ready to create the perfect playground for your children, visit www. theplaygroundpro.net to learn more.

Pest Control

Inspections and maintenance on a regular basis can extend your roof’s lifespan and make sure that your home stays safe and dry throughout every season. Metro Roofing can help with expert inspections, keeping your roof strong and ready for hurricane season. Visit www.metroroofingfl.com to learn more.

Pool Care

THE FINISHING TOUCH

Every room in your home tells a story, and the floor serves as its foundation. It shapes how the space feels, functions, and endures. Making the right choice is about finding a balance between style and the unique needs of every home.

“Flooring has a huge impact on the look and feel of your home,” explains Renee Gray, owner of Footprints Floors Suncoast. From the elegance of hardwood to the resilience of luxury vinyl planks (LVP), the right choice can redefine a space entirely.

One of today’s most popular options is LVP, valued for its durability, affordability, and waterproof properties— especially well-suited for Florida homes. “Luxury vinyl is a game changer,” Gray says. Laminate flooring is also popular for homeowners seeking versatility.

Tile remains a reliable choice for moisture-prone areas like kitchens and bathrooms. However, it’s not always the best fit for every household. “Tile is timeless, but it can be challenging for seniors,” Gray notes. It’s essential to select materials that accommodate each homeowner’s unique needs.

Making a house a home.

Hardwood and hybrid materials like Raintree offer beauty and durability, considering long-term value. “Raintree combines the elegance of hardwood with the resilience of luxury vinyl, making it ideal for Florida homes,” Gray explains.

Choosing the right flooring can feel overwhelming. Homeowners should take the time to find the perfect fit. “Bring samples home, see how they look in your space,” Gray adds. Consistent flooring throughout a home can create the illusion of larger spaces, while softer, waterproof options may be better suited for families.

Ultimately, floors are an essential part of making a house a home. The right choice isn’t just about style—it’s about creating a space that fits your life.

tips from the pros:

• Budget Smart: Consider your stay length before investing in flooring. For shorter stays, choose affordable options like LVP or laminate.

• Think Practical: Waterproof LVP and laminate are perfect for busy households.

• Sample First: Bring flooring samples home to see how they match your lighting and decor.

• Plan Ahead: Reduce mobility risks by choosing safe, easy-to-maintain flooring for seniors, like soft luxury vinyl.
