THE OLD BALL GAME

THE

REGULAR BASE BALL CLUB OF MOUNT CLEMENS BRINGS THE BELOVED PATRIOTIC PASTIME AND ITS TRADITIONS TO LIFE

There is something wholesomely American about a game of baseball. Little boys spend sticky summers on sand lots, stealing bases while kicking up dirt, and dreaming of a home run. And though they grow up, the joy of a catch never does.

It’s why you’ll find a special group of players still chasing a favorite pastime, living in days gone by on weekends each summer – and pretending it's 1867.

You’ll recognize the Regular Base Ball Club of Mount Clemens reenacting the Gentleman’s Game in patriotic red, white and blue, their name and uniform a nod to the full-time professional soldiers who served in the Civil War. In these simpler times, players weren’t paid, sportsmanship was the standard and recreation ruled. Clubs paced off their bases and played in pastures and open parkland, sometimes just avoiding the trees, and when the contest concluded, the host provided a meal for its guests so the revelry could continue. As it did back then, the Regulars blend community and camaraderie, only this time around, the team’s credibility is what sets it apart.

“Although we are playing this game for our own enjoyment and recreation … presenting the game as it was actually played is our mission and engaging, educating and entertaining our spectators is paramount,” says Paul Hunkele, who formed the club in 2002.

The Regulars seek to preserve the original rules, customs and language of a game that was once just a child’s sport. Unlike many vintage teams across the country that combine myth and misinformation or simply don’t regulate it, Paul strives to differentiate the Regulars by replicating the period game. He’s an early baseball authority the National Vintage Base Ball Association called to chair its Rules and Customs Committee, which also oversees uniforms, equipment and terminology of the time. He is also one of the four umpires for the Greenfield Village Historic Baseball Program.

13 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/MOUNTCLEMENS JUNE 2024

“It’s interesting because you’re learning so much and trying to apply it,” Paul admits. “It’s a big experiment that doesn’t end." There are guidelines on everything that would keep a match authentically-1867: Don’t overrun first base; take a full and safe lead, steal when it is opportune and slide only when needed; never argue with or question the umpire. In this 19th century-esque game, foul balls caught on a bounce are out – so are skyscrapers (balls caught on the fly). Struck balls are deemed fair based on where they first hit the ground: A ground ball that lands in fair territory before rolling outside the baseline into the foul area is still fair.

They pitch underhand, straight-elbowed and with no speed restriction, to the batter who motions where he wants the ball placed: Knee-high, waist-high or shoulder-height. At the crack of his bat, a ballist (player) would put some steam on (run quickly), but his teammate could be caught napping (picked off at his base) or run out (caught stealing) trying to get his second (steal second base).

A maskless catcher, usually one of the best athletes on the team, can play 3- to 4-yards back and throw to the bases, signal to fielders to move in or out or discreetly tip to the pitcher when to throw to a base. Ballists catch barehanded – or get out of the way, jokes Paul, who’s broken nine fingers in his 23 years of playing.

The hand-woven, star-shaped leather ball of the 1860s was slightly larger and heavier than today, though the sting from its speed is likely still the same. Dan Roland, captain of the Regulars since 2022, plays third base – or the “hot corner,” as he calls it.

“You have to learn quickly, or you’ll hurt yourself. You need soft hands to be able to absorb the ball and take its momentum or be brave enough to stick your hands out there to knock it down,” he advises.

The Regulars fill Dan’s zest for history and fondness of friendly rivalry. “We try to be competitive, but at the end of the day we’re doing this really cool thing that not everyone knows about.”

Through September, the club hosts games at their home field, on the grounds of the Clinton Township government offices, 40000 Romeo Plank Road. They travel as guests from Bay City to Holly to Greenfield Village, and this summer, they’ll trek for the first time to Iowa for a match under the lights on the Field of Dreams. You can find days to be a spectator at games by visiting their Facebook page, the Regular Base Ball Club of Mount Clemens.

Annual hot rod car cruise ignites the streets of downtown

The first car cruise of the summer season rolls into the city with 32 years of grandiosity rumbling behind it. Since 1992, muscle cars, hot rods and vintage vehicles have converged at the corner of Main and Market streets for the Mount Clemens Cruise, eager to be admired aesthetically and under the hood.

What began as a way to attract visitors downtown has become a weekend filled with tradition, camaraderie and a chance for cars to stretch their wheels after being tucked away all winter.

Older than the Woodward Dream Cruise and the Gratiot Cruise, it’s become one of the premier classic car events in the country. And several community charities are directly supported, thanks to the work of the nonprofit organizer of the cruise, the Friends of Mount Clemens.

“I’m a die-hard car guy,” admits Steve Charlie, chairman of the club, whose expertise includes 30 years of hauling show cars and displays for Autorama. “I’m used to being with 150,000 people on a weekend sometimes. It just sticks with you. You enjoy doing it.”

Around the cruise, you might be able to spot his pinstriped 1949 maroon Chevy Pickup. Or a glossy cherry red Ford Futura, a flashy Chevy Camaro Z28 or a classic 1939 teal Ford Coupe convertible.

This year, they’ve lined up special guests, attractions and live entertainment for the whole family. Some of the highlights of the weekend, May 31 - June 1, include:

• Annual Vince Pipia, Jim Ostrand and Charlie Winkler Memorial Awards

• Judged car show featuring 33 different classes  •

A meet-and-greet with Brigadier General (RET) “Odie” Doug Slocum and John Moss, retired manager of General Motors Chevrolet Special Vehicles Division

• Touch a Truck with fire engines, an ambulance and wreckers, to name a few

• Hot Wheels race car track for kids

• Coloring contest and career fair at the Discovery Center

• Miller Brothers Creamery treats

Cars are showcased throughout the downtown streets for pedestrian enjoyment until the cruise down Gratiot begins at 5 p.m. Saturday. You can visit www.mountclemenscruise.com for more information.

HEY, PUT YOUR RECORDS ON

Decades down the road, the allure of vinyl records remains. Despite the ease of digital streaming, a younger generation is gravitating toward its timeless sound

You can get lost in a record store. Rows of vinyl-wrapped treasures wait to be rifled through. Striking artwork paints sound to paper as your fingers move along the sleeve’s edge and flip to the next one and the next one. Time slows and you’re caught up in the nostalgia of vintage vocals and the thrill of undiscovered gems.  There is an agelessness to vinyl records. Despite the comingand-going of cassette tapes and CDs and the norm of digital streaming, the record has remained a constant, its popularity ever surging over the past two decades. Last year, 43 million records were sold, reflecting a steady 17-year-running growth. And the purchasing demographic is tied between ages 25-33 and 55-plus.

The medium attracts the aficionado whose smooth jazz spins atop a stylish Shinola Turntable. It’s the habit of the hobbyist whose shelves are stacked with artists from Stevie Wonder to AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac and Iggy Pop. And now a younger group is learning to love the ritual: Eagerly pulling the record from its sleeve, carefully placing the needle, listening to the crackle as it begins to spin.

Fifteen-year-old Bailey works at Weirdsville Records in downtown Mount Clemens and her collection could rival that of someone five times her age: Classic rock, easy listening, country, metal, swing, even Broadway soundtracks. She champions, “The bigger range you have, the better.” And it’s not the Netflix show she and her friends rush to change, but the record they all want to flip over. There is a warmth and depth second only to sitting in the room with the artist, the richness coming from the deep grooves of the vinyl disc.

“The best thing about putting on a record is the quality of the sounds and the experience of it,” she says. “It’s something physical you can hold onto that brings you closer to the music. It’s personal to you and has meaning.”

And for the novice, one favorite musician –be it Taylor Swift or James Taylor – may be the launch to an eventual library of them. They just need to take the first step: Making the intentional decision to buy a record.

“You don’t always have to start with the big dog first,” advises Davey Taylor, Weirdsville Records’ owner, suggesting first a lesser-known artist or album. “You might start talking to fellow music lovers around you and now you’re more open … it kind of snowballs into more than what you were ever thinking.”

Davey believes the culture and community found while perusing records can lead to a larger repertoire. “If you want to learn about music, go to a record store. You’ll learn more about the artist, more about a song, more useless trivia because you’re immersed in it.”

And while he doesn’t believe the popularity of vinyl records is a passing fad – record pressing plants can hardly keep up with the demand – he does concede this generation has the best of both worlds – in physical music and digital downloads. But, “There’s something cooler about, ‘Look at my record collection.’ It’s tangible for some reason, and it doesn’t matter how many times you’ve listened to it, looked at the cover or read the lyrics.”

“THE BEST THING ABOUT PUTTING ON A RECORD IS THE QUALITY OF THE SOUNDS AND THE EXPERIENCE OF IT. IT’S SOMETHING PHYSICAL YOU CAN HOLD ONTO THAT BRINGS YOU CLOSER TO THE MUSIC. IT’S PERSONAL TO YOU AND HAS MEANING.”

Safest Ways to Enjoy the Water and Waves

A Michigan summer is the siren song for water enthusiasts. The freshwater shorelines beckon boaters, sailors, fishermen and skiers for adventure atop the waves, sunlit fun with friends and a brag-worthy catch.

“People don’t realize how fortunate we are to have access to the greatest freshwater system in the world, right from here,” says Steve Guc, a State Farm Insurance agent in Mount Clemens. Not only is the sight of shipping vessels cruising across Lake St. Clair a marvel, but the expanse of 11,000 inland lakes accessible throughout the state is one-of-a-kind.

HOW BOATERS CAN STAY SAFE ATOP THE WAVES

EXPERT HELP | AUTO + MARINE 24

“Everyone wants to go out and have a good time on the water, but you do have to pay attention,” notes Steve, who grew up in a boating family and still enjoys it recreationally and as an avid fisherman. “Boating is fun and it’s a social thing to do, but there is a lot of responsibility that comes with it.”

In 2022, the top five contributing factors in boating accidents across the state were operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed and machinery failure. To avoid these and other mishaps, Steve shares tips for watercraft safety.

KEEP ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT ON BOARD

Make sure to outfit your boat with the proper and required equipment, including fire extinguishers, flares, a first aid kit, nautical charts, an anchor and correct-fitting life jackets. Of people who drowned in boating-related fatalities in 2022, 85 percent were not wearing a life jacket. “You have to make sure you have safety equipment, not just legally, but because you care about the people aboard,” says Steve. In Michigan, any motorized boat operator born after June 30, 1996, is legally required to pass a boater safety course.

KNOW YOUR BOAT

Every boat distinguishes how many people can be on board and how much weight it can carry, Steve notes. Even if a boat has the space, it can often become overloaded. He also sees inexperienced boaters who don’t understand how to operate it safely from a mechanical standpoint: “The battery has to be charged, you need to have enough gas and know how to use the GPS system, if one is installed.”

OBSERVE YOUR SURROUNDINGS

“Lake St. Clair is a big lake, and it doesn’t take long to get away from where you departed so that you can’t see it anymore,” he warns. “Know where you are, where you’re going and how to get back. Everything looks different when you’re out on the lake and looking back at the shore.” Additionally, the weather can change frequently and fast. “Lakes are big and can get really rough and dangerous.” Steve also notes that a decrease in water levels can unknowingly cause damage to both small and large watercraft, as can debris and deadheads flushed in from rivers. “The water is returning to normal levels, so the same place you were before, now you’re going to hit the bottom,” he cautions.

BOAT WHILE SOBER

“When you add alcohol, an inexperienced operator and being out in the sun all day, it’s a recipe for trouble,” says Steve. Alcohol is the leading factor of boating accidents – and just like being behind the wheel of a car, it can impair judgment, balance, vision and reaction time.

INVEST IN INSURANCE

A boat is a significant investment – but it can be costly if you have an unexpected repair or accident. That’s why it’s important to put a good insurance policy in place for whatever may happen, whether your boat sinks – either out on the waves or right in its well – or is crashed into, like what you’ll see with the hundreds tied up together and trapped at Jobbie Nooner. “The common misconception about boat insurance is that it’s expensive, but it’s not,” Steve says. “When you have all of this money poured into your boat, it makes sense that you want to protect it.” You can find out more about the type of boating insurance Steve provides by visiting www.steveguc.com or calling (586) 469-6400.
