LET’S FIRE UP THE GRILL, FIND A PATIO, OR GET OUT BY THE WATER! June is all about the start of summer in the Minneapolis Lakes community. There are so many things to do and such a short season, so time really is of the essence.

Our team is continuously inspired by what is happening locally, and this month is no exception. June is our Men’s issue, so we made it a point to connect with a few locally owned businesses operated by some good guys. We spoke with Matt Frakes and Peter Mogck, childhood friends and the founders of Paddle North. In the past few years, stand up paddle boarding or “SUP” has become a fun and easy way to get out on the water, connect with nature and get some core exercise packed into your day. We met up with Nils Snyder, Michael Brehm and Mike Doyle of Kenwood Commercial to learn what’s happening on the commercial side of real estate. Residential in 2021 has proven to be a hot market, but if you want to be in the loop for commercial, this is the team for you. In the financial sector, we spoke with David Reiling at Sunrise Banks about their origins, how they have evolved, what you can do to support others through your accounts, and how banking can help

Finally, we reached out to Kowalski’s for one of their tried-and-true steak recipes, and learned a bit more about their phenomenal meat and seafood department. However you find yourself celebrating the start of summer in our beautiful state, I hope you’re enjoying every minute of it.

WHEN HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS MATT FRAKES AND PETER MOGCK MET UP YEARS LATER, THEY STARTED TALKING ABOUT THEIR LOVE OF WATER SPORTS. But the more they talked, the more they realized a vital segment of water equipment was missing. “Everything available at the time was more surf focused, with a lot of Hawaiian flowers and neon colors,” says Matt. “It wasn’t really what we thought a customer here in the

Midwest would want.” Since Minnesota has a really strong water culture, they wanted to celebrate that by making a product that was a little simpler and blended in with the environment better. From a performance perspective, it also needed to excel on flat bodies of water, such as lakes and rivers. So, they set out to make a product that fit these parameters. Matt’s background is mechanical engineering and Peter’s is in marketing and sales. Together, they came up with a board design and started building them in a garage. Shortly after, due to high demand, they moved to outside manufacturing. This was in 2014; in 2016, they quit their day jobs and focused exclusively on their new company, Paddle North. “Paddle boards are what we started with, but over the last few years we’ve evolved into a water sports company

Stand up paddle boarding, they say, is not as difficult as some people may think. There’s some getting used to it, but if you’re on a properly sized board, it’s going to feel comfortable. You can focus on paddling and it’s not a constant effort to stay afloat. “We size people for the boards and it’s less about height and more weight driven,” says Matt. “A lighter person can go on a bigger board, but a heavier person would feel uncomfortable on a board that’s too small. You have to know who is going to be on the board, if there will be fishing gear, or dogs or kids, and come up with a weight capacity that will be on the board.” People of all ages love their products, adds Matt. Younger people seem to appreciate the inflatables more, while older people who have more storage options either buy them for themselves or to keep at the family cabin for children and grandchildren to enjoy. Paddle North also offers paddle challenges. “It’s a really exciting program we started and it’s really taken on steam as customers get passionate about paddling,” says Peter. They create fun and interesting things to do on the water using their products or similar products and once these challenges are completed, participants earn really cool free badges. It’s all based on an honor system. There are also plenty of how-to videos on the website, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced water paddler. Being in the water and out in nature is a great way to spend a day with family and friends. “It’s a grounding experience to break away and unplug and have tranquil time outside,” says Peter. “I think a lot of people have rediscovered that this past year. Being outside was one of the only forms of entertainment, whether it was walking, biking or being on the water. The benefits of that are immeasurable and it’s how memories are made.” You can find Paddle North stores at the Mall of America, in the Rosedale Mall, and at its headquarters in Columbia Heights. There will be a new store opening this summer in Grand Rapids, as well as a pop-up summer store in the Ridgedale Mall. A NEW DAY is Dawning SUNRISE BANKS IS ON THE HORIZON OF CHANGE

COLLABORATION, EDUCATION, TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNITY ARE AMONG THE CORE PRINCIPLES SUNRISE BANKS HOLDS NEAR AND DEAR. David Reiling, current Chairman and CEO, believes banking is a big part of a community and its fabric. “It starts with access, convenience and fair pricing,” says Reiling, who joined his father William Reiling in the mid-90s after learning the ropes of urban banking with 1st Interstate Bank and Citibank in Los Angeles. Upon returning to Minnesota to help with the banks his father had purchased, David comments that, “No one had mastered the social service banking space,” and there was a lot of opportunity in urban communities that were perceived as failing. With an entrepreneurial spirit and vision to make change, the Reilings set out to build something different. Today, Sunrise Banks isn’t just an ordinary financial institution. They have chosen a unique path in deciding to play an active role in social and environmental issues while incorporating empathy and responsibility into the core of their foundation. The Sunrise Banks locations are still predominantly urban aiming to attract, serve, and support small businesses, create jobs, and reinvest in neighborhoods. David realizes it is important to learn how to navigate different communities and ethnicities in order to bridge the gaps and become a “catalyst for change and mindset of a community.” Since Sunrise is a mission driven organization, with goals to be the most innovative bank empowering financial wellness, they are not afraid to take a stand on the future of banking. The Sunrise team believes in a people-based combination of communication, ARTICLE COURTNEY REED PHOTOGRAPHY LUCY HAWTHORNE 24

education, technology and collaboration which includes partnerships with local non-profits and financial technology or -- “fintech”-- companies in order to increase community engagement, convenience, and accessibility for members of varying urban economics. Since banking is highly regulated, David is incredibly proud of the Sunrise Banks’ certifications and says, “You have to walk the talk.” One of their several accreditations includes a CDFI or certification for Community Development Financial Institution which is granted by the U.S. Treasury and is rigorous with its criteria and yearly audits. Certified every year since 2001, Sunrise Banks, to date, is the only CDFI- certified organization in Minnesota and nearly the entire Midwest. Another impressive accolade is their B Corp Certification which speaks to governance, policies and transparent banking operations. Currently, Sunrise Banks ranks in the top 10% of B Corps and has for the last seven years. Every year the requirements get tougher, and David says it is truly a way to “test their mission.” Recently, Reiling himself has been elected Chair of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV), which is an alliance of 66 banks worldwide who focus on a triple bottom line of social and environmental impact and financial sustainability within the communities they serve. From the U.S. to the Netherlands, Italy to India and beyond, these banks are striving to break the traditional mold through strategy, innovation, and collaboration in order to bolster communities of underserved people. With Covid, their 2020 annual meeting was hosted completely virtually by Sunrise Banks and provided a combination of pre-recorded and live events with 49 straight hours of content. Reiling is proud to say that “Minnesota has so many global connections” and being able to strategize with these allies moving forward is key to future financial movement. When you’re invested in Sunrise, your bank account can truly make a difference. The Sunrise Impact Deposit Fund helps fund loans to support small and local businesses, affordable housing, and nonprofit organizations. David says to, “Think about where your money sleeps,” and when asked about the future of Sunrise Banks, mentions their goal to positively impact and serve 250 million lives by 2028. Their North4good volunteer organization was born out of assisting Habitat for Humanity and helping to complete a full housing project build in just 60 days. It took 700+ volunteers, but they were successful and had fun. David says oftentimes, “You go to volunteer to help somebody else, but you always end up learning more about yourself.” Recent conditions have blossomed, and Sunrise Banks is looking forward to continuing their local, national and global influence. With new innovation, high tech delivery systems, education and hard work, David looks forward to an up-and-coming generation of dedicated team members and youth who care deeply about the environment and social responsibility. “We plan to stand by our values and invest in the needs of the community. It takes extra work, but that is what’s necessary for a city to keep growing.” To learn more, visit www.sunrisebanks.com and www.north4good.com 26

However, the space itself is changing and they say there’s not a one size fits all solution. More money and thought is going into spaces so colleagues are not sitting right next to each other and are able to gather in a more open environment. “We’re definitely seeing a draw more towards suburban offices right now,” says Brehm. “We’re also seeing a lot of shorter-term leases. So instead of the usual seven to 10 years, it’s now three to five. That is to create the flexibility to navigate through these uncharted territories.” Tenants also have different concerns than they did pre-COVID. “Business owners spend more time asking questions about cleanliness and safety,” says Doyle. “People are now more interested in the heating and cooling elements in the building and how the air is purified.” They may also prefer office space that they can easily walk into instead of having to get into an elevator. “In addition, when assisting tenants, it’s not just about looking at the brick and mortar of the building,” says Brehm. “It’s things like ‘Who is the landlord? Do they have a reliable property management team in place? Does the building have good amenities that your employees are going to like?’ We’ll also go into depth in order to know if the asset is well financed and what the capital structure looks like: Is it healthy, or is there a loan coming due? We’ve had a few that you can only know if you’re totally focused and local.” To learn more about the team of Kenwood Commercial, and how they can help you as a landlord or business owner, go to https:// www.kenwoodcommercial.com/ (952) 212-0757. 1516 W Lake Street in the Citadel building.
