Little Apple Style In September
When ya think about it, September really is one of the best months of the year in the Little Apple. It’s still warm, yet the cool anticipation of fall is in the air. Football returns, as does the college students who are excited to be back at school. While the traffic picks up a little, the road construction begins to ease up. You can still play at the lake, and really enjoy the great outdoors at home. Life is always pretty good in the Little Apple, but perhaps a little more so in September.
I also enjoy September because this is the issue where we explore the fascinating world of style. Style is deeply personal. It’s constantly evolving as we celebrate our passions, our desires, and ourselves. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world, and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share what we love.
Such as K-State football. We love it so much; it doubles our town’s population half a dozen times a year! Few things are more thrilling than watching those purple jerseys with silver helmets and pants charging out of the tunnel. It was incredible to go behind the scenes with the Kansas State football equipment staff for this issue. Thank you to head equipment manager, Al Cerbe!
Tress Hair Boutique and Bargain Boutique are two of Manhattan’s trendiest spots, and we’re proud to feature them in this issue. Special thanks to Dr. Jace Rickstrew, a fellowship-trained Mohs skin cancer surgeon from the Manhattan area, who will truly make Manhattan a better place.
As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or create entirely new ones, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to explore new paths or revisit familiar ones. Manhattan offers so much to uplift our spirits and ignite our creativity.
What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

On a hot, late summer afternoon, an elevator at the Vanier Football Complex at Bill Snyder Family Stadium descends into the busiest room in the Little Apple in August. When the doors open to the K-State football equipment room, you can immediately feel the energy and organized chaos that fuels the heart of the team.
To the left, a large laundry area hums with the constant operation of half a dozen commercial-sized washing machines. To the right, rows of shelves and storage lockers hold every imaginable piece of football gear. The walls are adorned with K-State relics and classic Big Eight memorabilia— banners, a stack of helmets from every NFL and current Big 12 team, and a fully dressed mannequin. The equipment room, perhaps more than any other space in the stadium, embodies the pride and rich history of Wildcat football.
This time of year, the 13-member equipment staff—comprised of two full-time managers and 11 students—are bustling with activity. They’re busy checking inventory, organizing gear, and ensuring everything is in its proper place. Large bins filled with footballs, freshly laundered uniforms, orange Nike shoe boxes, and other equipment are strategically placed around the room. The smell of new leather, fresh fabric, and a hint of sweat permeates the air.
Beyond the laundry room and storage lockers is where you’ll find the boss . Head Equipment Manager Al Cerbe, wearing a purple polo and black pants with a Powercat-adorned belt, sits at his post. Born in Las Vegas, Nevada, Al moved to Northwest Mississippi as a child. In college, he served as a student manager at the University of Memphis. His first role as head equipment manager was at Northeast Mississippi Community College. He briefly worked with the Memphis Xplorers, an Arena League farm team, and later interned with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Al joined K-State in 2007 as a full-time assistant. In 2011, Coach Bill Snyder recognized his hard work and dedication by promoting him to Head Equipment Manager.
Inside the Athletic Equipment Manager’s Association’s 2024 Convention in Atlanta, Al was named the Glenn Sharp Equipment Manager of the Year. This prestigious award goes to the manager that best demonstrates service, leadership, and excellence. Entering his 19th season at Kansas State, and 15th at the helm, Al truly is The Boss.
In college football, there are countless ways a player can suit up. Beyond the basics of having different uniforms for practice and games, the details come down to individual preferences. What type of pants and leg pads do they choose? Short sleeves or long sleeves? Which facemask do they prefer? There are training camp cleats, practice cleats, and game day cleats, which they start breaking in at camp to ensure they’re ready for the field. These cleats are often swapped out mid-season. And let’s not forget the travel gear that the entire team and coaching staff sports.
All embroidery—from logos and patches to the names on the back of the jerseys—is produced by Nike, a key advantage of Kansas State’s partnership with the company. However, when last-minute alterations are needed, Amy at Alterations Unlimited has been an invaluable resource for the team. With up to 115 players on the roster and 70 traveling across the country, the logistics are complex and extensive. Fortunately, Al and his award-winning staff have it down to a fine art.
In the locker room, Al reflected on his time at Kansas State. Having worked for legendary head coach Bill Snyder and now future hall-of-famer Chris Klieman, he deeply appreciates being in Manhattan and being part of this remarkable program. “It’s a blessing to get to work for Coach Klieman. I have really enjoyed his presence and I have learned so much about football with him. My thing is nailing practice and making sure everything gets done. It’s just so special.”

Meet Dr. Jace Rickstrew,
M.D.
A CONVERSATION WITH DR. JACE RICKSTREW, A DOUBLE-FELLOWSHIP TRAINED MOHS MICROGRAPHIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGEON, AND BOARD CERTIFIED DERMATOLOGIST AT HEARTLAND DERMATOLOGY
Where are you from originally?
I grew up in Wamego, Kansas, just down the road.
What’s your what’s been your path to get to where you’re at now?
After high school I went to Oklahoma State University. I like K-State a lot, but it was just a little too close to home. After Oklahoma State, I went to the University of Kansas Medical School for medical school and my dermatology residency. After residency, I did my first Mohs fellowship in Dallas, Texas, and then another at Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pennsylvania.
“Getting that extra training, knowing what to look for, looking under the microscope, making sure a lot of cancer is gone. That really allows me to do specialized techniques that offers a cure rate of up to 99% for these skin cancers.”
What expertise did you gain from fellowship training?
All we do is skin cancer removal all day, every day. I went and did two fellowships, which is unique. There’s only a handful of surgeons in the entire United States that has done that. But just getting that extra training, knowing what to look for, looking under the microscope, making sure a lot of cancer is gone. That really allows me to do specialized techniques that offers a cure rate of up to 99% for these skin cancers.
What was your path coming to Heartland Dermatology?
I was looking for a practice that would really support me as a Mohs surgeon and allow me to do the things that I excel at and enjoy doing the most. Heartland was a great mix, and the perfect mash-up of me looking to get back in this area and them looking for somebody to deliver excellent care here.
Do you do everything here in house?
We do everything here at the office in Manhattan. It’s all outpatient. No overnight hospital stays. It’s all under local anesthesia, so patients can come in and come out the same day.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love spending time with my wife Katie and our dogs. I like to lift weights and I try to golf. I’m not very good but working on that. Then, my parents still have a cattle farm north of Wamego, so I go out there and help and spend some time out there.

TRESS
Redefining the Salon Experience
At Tress Hair Boutique, clients can expect no tipping, upselling, or doublebooking. Through an all-inclusive hourly pricing model, each client receives undivided attention.
The visionary behind Tress is Jessica Nelson. Growing up as an Army kid and later becoming the wife of a Green Beret, Jessica learned the value of adaptability—a principle that now defines her approach to salon management. After becoming a stylist at 19, Jessica spent over a decade navigating the rigid structures of various salons. This experience led her to recognize the need for a salon environment that prioritizes stylist autonomy, creativity, and a healthy work-life balance. CONTINUED
At Tress, Jessica has created a supportive atmosphere where stylists are empowered to set their own hours and hourly rate. Jessica shares, “I wanted to give [stylists] freedom to charge what they are worth and over their schedule.” This model not only attracts talented professionals but also fosters a positive salon culture, contrasting with the typical salon experience in new stylists must start at the bottom. “Jess actually cares about empowering [her workers],” shares stylist Sarah Moore, who joined the salon earlier this year.
Beyond her professional life, Jessica is a creative force with a passion for DIY projects, including home renovations. Recently, she and her husband purchased a fixer-upper in Manhattan. While her
husband is currently stationed in Washington state, the couple chose to settle in Manhattan long-term because of its community.
Jessica’s creativity extends to the design of Tress Hair Boutique, where her meticulous attention to detail is evident in the salon’s décor. This creative spirit also influences the services offered, with everything customized to meet the needs of each client, from extensions to color treatments.
Jessica’s vision for Tress Hair Boutique is to share the success she has built with others, creating an environment where stylists can thrive. As she continues to grow her team, Jess remains focused on ensuring that Tress Hair Boutique is a place where both stylists and clients feel valued.
