The Power of a Father’s Influence

Over my 40 year business career, I have been fortunate to have incredible male role models from whom I have learned some of my best business lessons. These were gentlemen who worked hard to achieve a prestigious level of success. There were also a few interesting characters who taught me the art of behaviors to avoid - good lessons nonetheless. Another role most of them had in common was father.  The most critical role of them all. As we look at our issue this month we uncover amazing male role models that make our community beloved.

I place a special focus on the role of father since I lost mine at the age of four and often wonder how life would have been different had he been able to stay. My older brother stepped in and did his best to fill the void, as did uncles and family friends, but I knew in my heart it wasn’t the same.

A father brings special gifts of quality time, life-giving words, resources, emotional support, discipline and boundaries, a strong moral compass, a biased perspective on sports and positive actions all shaping a child's character and future success.  It's not a surprise that, statistically, children who grow up with engaged fathers perform better in school. The fathers and father-figures we are highlighting this month have provided just this type of environment for the children in their universe.

It's a good time to let the father, father figure or male mentor in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as the community around you.

All the best,

June 2025

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.

A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.

SOMETHING SWEET

This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.

SOMETHING TANGY

Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.

SOMETHING SPICY

This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.

SOMETHING LIQUID

It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.

SOMETHING TOMATO

You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.

THE SPICE COMBINATION

This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.

HOMEMADE

BBQ SAUCE

INGREDIENTS

• 2 cups ketchup

• 1 cup water

• 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

• 5 tablespoons brown sugar

• 5 tablespoons sugar

• 1/2 tablespoon  black pepper

• 1/2 tablespoon onion powder

• 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard

• 1 tablespoon lemon juice

• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

DIRECTIONS

In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.

Connecting the Dots

How Steve McGarry Simplifies Business Technology

For Steve McGarry, helping businesses make sense of their internet, voice, and data services isn’t just a job—it’s a calling. “McGarry Consulting is a technology and telecom consulting firm focused on helping small to mid-sized businesses better understand and manage their internet, voice, and data services,” he says. “We specialize in inventory and billing analysis to uncover cost savings, increase capacity, and ensure clients know exactly what services they’re paying for.”

Steve’s work is rooted in simplifying the complicated. “Many businesses purchase services directly from major providers like Comcast or AT&T without fully understanding their options or how those services integrate with critical software platforms,” he explains. “As the business grows and staff turns over, it’s easy to lose track of what’s in place. That’s where we step in—helping to reduce expenses, improve service, and often doing it at no cost to the client.”

Beyond savings, Steve emphasizes security. “Cyberattacks—especially ransomware—are increasingly common, affecting over half of U.S. businesses and costing billions. The key question every company should ask is: what happens if we’re locked out of our systems?”

As cloud services become the norm, McGarry Consulting helps clients adapt. “Nearly every software provider is moving to the cloud, which can be overwhelming and costly. We help businesses make that transition smoothly or manage their existing cloud infrastructure more efficiently.”

He also expands client choices beyond the obvious names. “Most businesses only consider a couple of major providers, but there are hundreds of carriers that might better fit their needs. Partnering with a Trusted Technology Advocate—like us—opens up a wider pool of options.”

McGarry’s approach is deeply personal. “Don’t try to do it all on your own,” he advises. “Working with someone like me means you get an advocate—not just

“Coaching, volunteering, raising a family here— Lincolnway isn’t just where I live, it’s where I’ve grown as a person and a professional.”

a vendor—and someone who sticks around after the deal is done and holds the providers accountable.”

He keeps his edge by staying informed. “I stay connected with thousands of providers... learning what makes each provider different and evaluating whether they’re the kind of partner I’d trust with my clients.”

After decades in the field, he says, “I often joke that I’m a ‘seasoned veteran’—which is a polite way of saying I’ve been doing this a long time. Even so, I’m always learning myself.”

Steve’s roots run deep in the Lincolnway area. “I’ve lived in the Lincolnway area for 28 years and built strong connections through coaching youth sports, being active in my church, and leading Boy Scouts & Indian Guides. I really value those relationships and their friendships.”

And if he weren’t in telecom? “Probably either a Chicago firefighter or a high school teacher and coach. Teaching and coaching fall hand in hand with what I do now.”

If you’re looking for him afterhours, you’ll find Steve watching movies, or TV shows (with no commercials!) cheering on Chicago’s sports teams, and spending time with his grandkids. “That’s where I find the most joy,” he says.

In Their Words

The Heart of Fatherhood

Fatherhood comes with no handbook, but it does come with plenty of memorable moments, hardearned wisdom, and unexpected laughs. It's a role that challenges, rewards, humbles, and inspires— often all in the same day. Whether it's navigating sleepless nights, cheering from the sidelines, or offering advice (solicited or not), dads show up in countless ways that shape the lives of their children and families.

To celebrate the men who fill this vital role, we caught up with four Lincolnway area dads to hear their take on what it really means to be a father. They shared personal reflections on the joys, the challenges, the lessons they've learned along the way, and the stories that make it all worthwhile.

SUMMER GRILL

RECIPES

THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER

The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag

2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.

3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.

4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.

5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.

6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).

7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Following is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.

*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.

SIMPLE SKIRT STEAK

INGREDIENTS:

• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*

• 2 Tablespoons lime*

• 2 Tablespoons finely,

chopped cilantro

• ¼ Cup olive oil or avocado oil

• ¼ White onion, finely chopped

• 1 Tablespoon cumin

• Salt and pepper to taste

CHIMICHURRI

INGREDIENTS:

• ½ Cup parsley, finely chopped

• ½ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 3 Cloves garlic, minced

• 1 Red chili (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ½ Teaspoon dried oregano

• 1 Teaspoon salt

• 1 Tablespoon lime juice (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. You can make this in the late morning and let it sit for around 4-6 hours, or you can make it the day before and let the flavors meld overnight in the fridge. Just be sure to take it out and get it to room temp before you serve it, as olive oil hardens in the fridge. Serve over skirt steak or tacos.

ROASTED CORN SALSA

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 Ears sweet corn

• 10oz. Cherry tomatoes

• ¼ Cup lime juice

• 1 Finely chopped jalapeno or serrano (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ¼ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• ½ Cup white onion, chopped

• 2 Cloves garlic, minced

• Salt to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Grill corn, you do not need to soak the corn beforehand.

2. Place corn on the grill (inside their husks) over medium heat turning every few minutes.

3. After 10 to 12 minutes shuck the corn and put the cobs back on the grill for 2-4 minutes rotating frequently to achieve that charred look and flavor.

4. Cut the corn from the cob, place in bowl and add all other ingredients. Let the mixture meld for about an hour and serve with tortilla chips or as a taco garnish.

Failure and dealing with adversity introduces you to yourself. When things get tough, how are you going to react?

Building Better Players:

Coach Jake Zajc's Approach to Building Character Through Baseball

At Lincoln-Way West, coaching baseball is about far more than balls and strikes. For Head Coach and Assistant Athletic Director Jake Zajc, it’s a daily opportunity to help young athletes become disciplined, resilient, and team-minded individuals prepared for life both on and off the field.

"I just read this the other day and really liked it," Zajc says. "'Your actions have to back up your desires.' To me, this falls under the category of being resilient, being mentally tough, and having a ‘nothing is going to stop me’ attitude."

Zajc believes many athletes are motivated by their goals, but reaching those goals takes more than just desire. It requires consistency, discipline, and the willingness to push oneself every day.

“Many athletes want to achieve the goals they set out for themselves, but to plan and maintain that work ethic to reach those goals is what separates athletes,” he explains.

At Lincoln-Way West, the baseball program is structured to help athletes build that work ethic. “We provide facilities and equipment, strength and conditioning programs, and advice to help each of them along their journey in the sport,” Zajc says. “There are many moments throughout all of these examples that we educate and challenge our players to push themselves further than they think they can achieve.”

In recognition of his leadership and coaching success, the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association named Jake Zajc the 2022 Class 4A Coach of the Yeara testament to developing both strong teams and strong individuals.

Character development is a core focus for Zajc and his staff. “I feel that our coaching staff sets the expectations at a high level when it comes to effort and how we conduct ourselves as a baseball program,” he explains. “There are many good and bad teachable moments during a season that you have to address so that the players know what is expected from them as part of the team.”

Zajc's own coaching journey started with the positive experiences he had growing up playing multiple sports. “Once I got into high school sports and witnessed all the aspects of coaching, I knew it was something that I wanted to pursue,” he recalls. His first coaching opportunity came at Reed-Custer High School under Hall of Fame coach Jerry Cougill, whom Zajc credits as a great mentor. “I couldn’t have asked for a better coach or person than Coach Cougill during my first year coaching.”

After stints at Manteno High School and Lincoln-Way Central, Zajc eventually landed the head coaching job at Lincoln-Way West when the school opened. “I owe a lot to all three of these coaches that helped me along the way in my coaching career,” he adds.

“Fear and doubt are the silent killers in baseball. It can really set back players for a period of time.”

Baseball is a sport known for its highs and lows, and Zajc doesn’t shy away from the mental demands the game places on players. “We are always having conversations about mental toughness and what that actually means in baseball,” he says. “Fear and doubt are the silent killers in baseball. It can really set back players for a period of time.”

To help athletes overcome these challenges, Zajc emphasizes mindset and preparation. “Focus on the aspects that you can control like work ethic, positive mindset, and being a great teammate,” he says. “Focusing on bad calls, creating excuses or demonstrating bad behavior/ body language isn’t going to help you get through the tough times.”

Leadership is another essential part of the culture Zajc builds. “Our most important rule in our program is being a great teammate,” he says. “There are so many layers to this simple rule. Everything from your work ethic to help the team to how you treat people all fall under this category.”

Spring break trips, he notes, have helped strengthen this culture and allowed team leaders to emerge early in the season. “The stronger foundation of a team gives them more ownership of the team,” he says. “I do believe this helps in the most critical parts of the season when you are going through the ups and downs.”

Zajc also helps players develop confidence by focusing on preparation. “We put the players in pressure situations in practices to make them think for themselves and play out the situations,” he explains. “If you are ‘all in’ each day with your training on the field, in the weight room, during practices, then you have nothing to worry about playing in games.”

He sees clear parallels between the lessons baseball teaches and the realities of life. “In any sport there are relatable instances of everyday life. Terms like work ethic, character, being a great teammate all apply,” he says. “As coaches we need to model leadership qualities for our players.”

Perhaps one of Zajc’s most powerful messages comes when speaking about failure. “When things get tough, how are you going to react?” he asks. “Are you going to make excuses or cut corners, or will you meet these challenges head-on and conquer them with high character?”

At the heart of Zajc’s program is a simple but powerful philosophy: set goals, stick to them, and use every challenge as a stepping stone. “It gives you direction and the ability to make quality decisions,” he says. “Yes, the plan or goals may change along the way but it's important to always have these to use for motivation and guidance.”
