The Men’s Issue

This month, we celebrate the men who lead with strength, kindness, and quiet consistency. The ones who show up—not for recognition, but because they care. Whether it’s a father, partner, friend, or mentor, the influence of a good man is something that leaves a lasting imprint on our lives.

When I think about fatherhood, I can’t help but think of my own dad (pictured with my sisters and me). Supportive, loving, dependable, and strong— he’s someone who has shown up for me time and time again, without hesitation. I’ve never once doubted that he’d be there. He’s one of my biggest cheerleaders, offering encouragement, unwavering love, and just the right dose of humor to brighten any moment. As a father to daughters, he’s embraced every role with heart—protector, guide, and the occasional dance partner. He’s the steady pillar of our family and continues to set the standard for what it means to be a great Father.

This issue is dedicated to the men who do the same. Inside, we’re spotlighting local leaders, creators, and trailblazers who are making their mark on the Eastside and beyond. We also share a curated list of ways to celebrate the father figures in your life—from gift ideas to experiences he’ll never forget.

To all the dads, role models, and everyday heroes—thank you. You matter more than you know.

Happy Father’s Day!

HOME TURF ADVANTAGE

Sounders FC Player, Jordan Morris

Seattle is no stranger to soccer greatness—but the next two summers promise to be truly historic. As the city prepares to take the global stage as a host for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, its deep soccer roots and electric fan culture are already on full display. From record-setting attendance at Lumen Field to a growing list of international milestones, no club has done more to elevate the sport in the Pacific Northwest than Seattle Sounders FC.

Before 2026, another global spotlight is headed to Seattle: the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Hosted across the U.S. from June 15 to July 13, the tournament features top clubs from each of FIFA’s six confederations. Representing MLS, Sounders FC—still the league’s only Concacaf Champions Cup winner—will face international giants like Paris Saint-Germain, Botafogo, and Atlético Madrid in the tournament’s “Group of Death”.

HOW THE SEATTLE SOUNDERS ARE SHAPING FIFA 2026

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC

With six Club World Cup matches set to be played at Lumen Field—three featuring the Sounders—Seattle will once again find itself at the center of global soccer. It’s a moment not just for the team, but for the city as a whole—and for the next generation of players watching from the stands.

We sat down with key Sounders figures to reflect on what this moment means for Seattle, the community, and the future of the game...

JORDAN MORRIS

Seattle Native & Professional Soccer Player for Seattle Sounders FC and USMNT

AS A SEATTLE NATIVE, WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU PERSONALLY TO SEE YOUR HOMETOWN HOST THE FIFA WORLD CUP IN 2026?

It’s awesome that Seattle gets to host games for the World Cup, especially having U.S. Men’s National Team come here. I think the city deserves it. This has

been a huge soccer town since before the Sounders came to MLS in 2009, but since then we’ve really seen the attendance and fanbase that we have here. The excitement around soccer in this city is huge. Our fans deserve it and it’ll be incredible to see the biggest stage in the world come to Seattle.

WHAT KIND OF IMPACT DO YOU THINK THE WORLD CUP WILL HAVE ON YOUNG PLAYERS AND THE FUTURE OF SOCCER IN OUR COMMUNITY?

I think you see soccer already growing so much. More young players are deciding to get into soccer vs. other sports, and I think the World Cup is only going to accelerate that process. They’ll get to see the biggest players in the world fighting for what everyone dreams about when they start playing soccer, which is going to the World Cup and winning a World Cup. For the kids that are able to go to the games and see them live, or even watch on TV and see Seattle, it’s going to be great for the next generation.

“OUR GOAL IS TO SHOW THE WORLD WHAT MAKES SEATTLE SPECIAL — A CITY WHERE SOCCER ISN’T JUST A GAME, IT’S A SHARED IDENTITY.”

FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE AS HEAD COACH, HOW DO YOU SEE THE WORLD CUP ELEVATING THE GAME IN SEATTLE AND THE BROADER PNW?

World Cups are big events, massive events. It’s called the World Cup because every country in the world gets to compete for a trophy. Based on that, combined with the

history and growth of soccer in this country, I think this is going to really put Seattle and the Pacific Northwest on the soccer map on a worldwide basis. We will have fans coming in from potentially every continent on the planet, and those fans are going to experience what we get to see every day – a beautiful town, our climate, the mountains, the Sound – and people are going to know that Seattle is a wonderful place. I think it’s going to do wonders for our area.

HOW IS THE CLUB PREPARING TO LEVERAGE THE GLOBAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE WORLD CUP TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION OF FANS?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is a unique opportunity to expand our impact and deepen community ties. We’re growing RAVE Foundation initiatives, creating more open play spaces and partnering with local schools and nonprofits to ensure that access and inspiration reach every neighborhood. Our focus is on legacy — using this moment to introduce the game to new fans, empower youth through soccer and to build lasting programs that reflect the diversity and passion of our region. We’ve proudly committed to 52 mini-fields across the State of Washington as part of these efforts, allowing free play for all in time for next year’s World Cup.

SEATTLE HAS LONG BEEN KNOWN FOR ITS PASSIONATE SOCCER CULTURE. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO SHOWCASE THAT SPIRIT TO THE WORLD DURING THE 2026 WORLD CUP?

Seattle’s soccer culture is vibrant, inclusive and fan-driven — and we’re excited to put that on full display to the world. We’re planning fan-forward events, storytelling campaigns and citywide activations that highlight our supporters and community values. From iconic matchday experiences to grassroots celebrations, we’ll ensure every visitor feels the heartbeat of Rave Green culture. Our goal is to show the world what makes Seattle special — a city where soccer isn’t just a game, it’s a shared identity.

THE LEGACY Behind the White Coat

GETTING TO KNOW DR. FREDRIC STERN—AESTHETIC PIONEER, NOVELIST & WINEMAKER

Blending science with artistry, precision with creativity—Dr. Fredric A. Stern, MD FACS has spent over two decades redefining the landscape of aesthetic medicine. As founder of The Stern Center in Bellevue, he was among the first to merge surgical expertise with the latest in laser and non-invasive treatments. But his passions don’t stop at medicine. A published novelist and boutique winemaker, Dr. Stern approaches every craft with the same commitment to excellence. In this feature, we uncover the story behind the white coat—and the many roles that define this aesthetic visionary.

YOU’VE BEEN A LEADER IN AESTHETIC MEDICINE FOR OVER 25 YEARS. LOOKING BACK, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THE STERN CENTER, AND WHAT HAS KEPT YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT THE WORK ALL THESE YEARS?

Before establishing The Stern Center in 1998, I served as the Director of Oculoplastic Surgery at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. At that time, there were no clinics on the Eastside that combined cutting-edge facial plastic surgery with MedSpa services like Botox, fillers, and laser treatments. My fascination with lasers and integrating the latest technology into my medical practice fueled my ambition to create a unique patient experience.  In 1998 I was one of only 100 trainers nationwide for Botox Cosmetic when it first received FDA approval. I was a pioneer in sutureless laser blepharoplasty (lower eyelid surgery to remove the ‘bags’), as well as CO2 and Erbium laser resurfacing treatments and have performed thousands of these procedures over the past 26 years. I have also served as a preceptor for Sciton Laser (who started their groundbreaking lasers around the same time) sharing my knowledge and experience with other physicians. Witnessing the transformative power of these exciting techniques and consistently delivering natural-looking results through the latest advancements, continues to inspire me.

THE STERN CENTER IS KNOWN FOR OFFERING A WIDE RANGE OF ADVANCED TREATMENTS BEYOND TRADITIONAL SKINCARE. WHAT SETS YOUR APPROACH APART FROM OTHERS IN THE INDUSTRY?

The Stern Center distinguishes itself by transcending traditional facial plastic surgery, offering a comprehensive and advanced approach to facial rejuvenation. We move

beyond isolated treatments, viewing each patient with an eye towards facial balancing and regaining a youthful glow. While a client may initially seek a specific procedure such as blepharoplasty (upper and lower eyelid surgery), our focus extends to achieving their broader aesthetic goals: a revitalized, youthful appearance. This involves integrating cutting-edge laser therapies to address sun damage and aging skin, recommending medical-grade skincare regimens, and employing strategically injected dermal filler, fat transfer and PRP techniques to restore lost facial volume and stimulate collagen. At The Stern Center, we prioritize sustained results and ongoing care, fostering a long-term partnership with our patients, rather than a single procedural encounter.

YOU’RE A PUBLISHED NOVELIST AND EVEN VENTURED INTO WINEMAKING—HOW DO THESE CREATIVE PURSUITS INFLUENCE YOUR WORK IN AESTHETICS, IF AT ALL?

My diverse creative pursuits deeply influence my approach to patient care. I believe the most successful plastic surgeons possess a blend of artistic and scientific skills. My academic background, a double major in Biology and Greek & Roman Studies, reflects this duality. My passion for storytelling, culminating in the publication of ‘The Endorphin Conspiracy,’ inspired by my time at Columbia University’s Trauma Center, and my current work on a historical novel about a physician to the Roman Emperor has cultivated a keen eye for narrative and detail. Similarly, my venture into winemaking with Noviello Vineyards has instilled an appreciation for the subtle nuances of crafting something beautiful and refined. Ultimately, these creative outlets reinforce my belief that achieving the most natural and aesthetically pleasing results in facial plastic surgery is as much an art as it is a science, requiring an understanding of form and balance.

IN AN INDUSTRY THAT EVOLVES RAPIDLY, HOW DO YOU STAY AHEAD OF TRENDS WHILE STILL MAINTAINING THE TRUST OF LONG-TIME PATIENTS WHO VALUE NATURAL RESULTS?

Staying ahead involves continuous education and selective adoption of the latest proven advancements such as advanced laser procedures, and PRP for hair loss and dark circles under the eyes. I have served as a scientific adviser performing stem cell research for a ground-breaking technology that stimulates collagen regeneration in the skin. I prioritize attending leading industry conferences and rigorous training, allowing me to distinguish fleeting trends from genuine progress.  I maintain open communication with my patients—many of whom have been coming to our practice for over 20 years— ensuring any new technique aligns with their desires for natural, lasting results. This balanced approach, blending innovation with established expertise, preserves trust and delivers optimal outcomes.

WHAT LEGACY DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE—NOT JUST IN BELLEVUE, BUT WITHIN THE AESTHETIC MEDICINE INDUSTRY—AND WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO THOSE FOLLOWING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS?

My deepest hope is to leave a legacy of patient-centered innovation, where the pursuit of aesthetic enhancement is always grounded in ethical practice and an understanding of a patient’s goals and well-being. I aspire to have influenced a shift towards prioritizing natural, lasting results over fleeting trends, and to have fostered a culture of continuous learning within the industry. To those who follow, I would advise: cultivate both your technical expertise and your artistic vision, never cease to learn and listen to your patients.  Always remember that the true measure of success lies in the positive impact you have on the lives you touch.

WHAT HOUSE BILL 1110 MEANS FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR COMMUNITY

Rewriting the Neighborhood

ARTICLE BY CHRIS ISHII | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RSIR AND LIFE N LIGHT
Matthew Gardner
Dean Jones, CEO | Realogics Sotheby's International Realty
Tadashi Shiga, Co-Founder | Realtie
“The lack of attainable housing is not just a supply issue— it’s a zoning issue.” -Matthew Gardner

In neighborhoods across Mercer Island, Bellevue, Kirkland, and Snohomish, a quiet but powerful shift is underway. Backyards, driveways, and empty side lots may soon take on new life, thanks to House Bill 1110 (HB 1110)—a bold new law reshaping residential zoning across Washington State.

Passed in 2023 and now taking effect, HB 1110 requires many cities to update zoning codes to allow two to six housing units on parcels previously limited to a single home. That means duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, and cottage-style clusters could soon sit side by side with traditional houses.

The question isn’t whether change is coming. It’s: How ready are we to shape it?

A LAW BORN OF URGENCY

Washington’s housing shortage didn’t happen overnight. For years, demand has outpaced supply, pushing home prices beyond reach for many families. Zoning restrictions that limit development to one home per lot—particularly in job-rich cities like Bellevue and Kirkland—have made it difficult to accommodate growth.

“Three-quarters of Seattle’s land is still zoned single-family,” says Dean Jones, President and CEO of Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty (RSIR). “That model worked in the 20th century—but not for the realities of today. HB 1110 is potentially offering more attainable ways to live where you work.”

And this is not optional. For cities with populations over 25,000—including all four highlighted in this magazine—HB 1110 is a mandate.

SO, WHAT WILL IT LOOK LIKE?

Picture this:

• A homeowner builds a backyard cottage for a parent or tenant.

• A single-level home is thoughtfully redeveloped into a triplex.

• A corner lot transforms into a small cluster of homes, designed to complement the neighborhood.

This is called “ missing middle housing”—a style of gentle density that fills the gap between single-family homes and large apartment buildings. And it’s exactly what HB 1110 encourages.

According to real estate economist, Matthew Gardner, “The lack of attainable housing is not just a supply issue—it’s a zoning issue. Missing middle housing helps solve both by increasing inventory without changing the character of our communities overnight.”

INNOVATION AT THE FOREFRONT

Still, navigating these changes isn’t easy. That’s where technology and expertise come in—and why RSIR has become a recognized leader in this space.

Dean Jones and his team aren’t just interpreting the law—they’re building the future. RSIR is piloting AI-powered tools that analyze zoning, land potential, and market value—helping brokers and property owners understand what’s possible.

At the center of this innovation is Tadashi Shiga and Ofer Avnery, Co-Founders of Realtie, an AI platform built to streamline infill development. Realtie lets users visualize development potential, model financial returns, and identify risks—all before the first permit is filed.

“Most homeowners don’t realize they’re sitting on untapped potential,” Shiga says. “With the right insights, a single lot can become a retirement plan, an income source, or a multigenerational solution.”

He and Jones are working closely to train brokers, educate communities, and connect residents with a full-service ecosystem—from planning to permitting to resale.

WHO CAN BENEFIT?

This new framework opens doors for:

• First-time buyers priced out of traditional homes

• Multigenerational families wanting to stay close

• Empty nesters seeking to downsize or generate rental income

• Longtime residents who may want to develop or sell strategically

Gardner emphasizes, “The shift isn’t just about affordability. It’s about retaining community. These homes allow the people who serve, teach, and support our cities to live here too.”

For sellers, these changes can dramatically increase the value of their land. For buyers, they open up new paths to homeownership. For neighborhoods, they bring fresh energy—while preserving the spirit of place.

WHAT ARE THE CONCERNS?

Naturally, some residents worry about traffic, parking, and infrastructure. Others fear rapid development or disruption of neighborhood character. These are real concerns—and cities are taking them

seriously with implementation timelines, design standards, and public input.

Gardner asks, “How can we encourage companies to move to the Pacific Northwest if housing prices are so high that they simply can’t afford to pay employees enough for them to be able to own a home?”

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW

• Explore your city’s plans – Each municipality is rolling out its own approach. Visit planning websites, attend open houses, and stay informed.

• Talk to a professional – From architects to lenders, planners to Realtors, the right team can help you understand your property’s true potential.

• Start the conversation – With neighbors, with family, with city leaders. This is a shared journey, and your voice matters.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This isn’t about density for density’s sake. It’s about building a future where our children can afford to live nearby. Where aging parents can move into a backyard cottage. Where creative solutions meet real needs.

As Gardner puts it: “The neighborhoods we build today will shape the lives of the next generation.”

House Bill 1110 invites us to rethink the boundaries— of our lots, our zoning, and our assumptions.

It’s about rewriting the neighborhood, yes.

But more than that—it’s about reimagining what community can be.

SUMMER GRILL RECIPES

THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER

The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!

INGREDIENTS:

• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*

• 2 Tablespoons Lime*

• 2 Tablespoons finely, chopped cilantro

• ¼ Cup Olive oil or avocado oil

• ¼ White onion, finely chopped

• 1 Tablespoon cumin

• Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag

2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.

3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.

4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.

SIMPLE SKIRT STEAK

5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.

6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).

7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Below is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.

*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.

CHIMICHURRI

INGREDIENTS:

• ½ Cup parsley, finely chopped

• ½ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 3 Cloves garlic, minced

• 1 Red chili (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ½ Teaspoon dried oregano

• 1 Teaspoon salt

• 1 Tablespoon lime juice (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. You can make this in the late morning and let it sit for around 4-6 hours, or you can make it the day before and let the flavors meld overnight in the fridge. Just be sure to take it out and get it to room temp before you serve it, as olive oil hardens in the fridge. Serve over skirt steak or tacos.

ROASTED CORN SALSA

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 Ears sweet corn

• 10oz. Cherry tomatoes

• ¼ Cup lime juice

• 1 Finely chopped jalapeno or serrano (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ¼ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• ½ Cup white onion, chopped

• 2 Cloves garlic, minced

• Salt to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Grill corn, you do not need to soak the corn beforehand.

2. Place corn on the grill (inside their husks) over medium heat turning every few minutes.

3. After 10 to 12 minutes shuck the corn and put the cobs back on the grill for 2-4 minutes rotating frequently to achieve that charred look and flavor.

4. Cut the corn from the cob, place in bowl and add all other ingredients. Let the mixture meld for about an hour and serve with tortilla chips or as a taco garnish.
