HONORING LOCAL FATHERS

LIFE + CULTURE

A SNEAK PEEK BEHIND A FEW LOCAL BUSINESSES

The Heart of Fatherhood

June in Ogden arrives with long golden evenings, the scent of barbecue in the air, and, most importantly, a chance to celebrate the fathers who shape our lives with strength, love, and a little playful mischief.

Fatherhood in this community means showing up — whether it's lacing up running shoes to race your kids down the street, coaching a little league team, or simply setting an example of kindness and hard work day after day.

When I think about fatherhood, I can’t help but think about my dad — a man who seemed larger than life when I was a child and still feels that way today. Hardworking and kind, athletic and a little bit goofy, my dad had a way of making life feel like an adventure. Back when we were kids, he’d challenge us and anyone within shouting distance to a foot race. Friends, neighbors, teenagers full of energy — it didn’t matter. He always won—every time.

Now, at 80 years young, he still can outrun most of us. And the best part? He’s still grinning at the finish line, teasing us to try again. His spirit — competitive yet joyful, strong yet humble — reminds me that being a father isn't about being perfect. It’s about showing up, having fun, working hard, and loving deeply.

In this issue, we honor the fathers of Ogden: the quiet heroes, the big dreamers, the hard workers, and the champions of backyard foot races. We celebrate their stories, sacrifices, and how they make our lives — and our city — better daily.

Here’s to the dads who never stop running toward their families, no matter how many birthdays they celebrate.

Happy Father’s Day, Ogden!

OGDEN'S HISTORIC GREENS TELL a timeless story

WHERE TRADITION, COMMUNITY, AND CHAMPIONSHIP MOMENTS SPAN GENERATIONS

ARTICLE BY KATRINA HAMMOND | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DALLIN EWART
Dallin Ewart

When the Ogden Golf & Country Club was founded in 1914, the world was a different place. Horse-drawn carriages still rattled down Washington Boulevard, and the Wasatch Mountains were silent witnesses to a town on the verge of modern growth. Against this backdrop, a group of visionaries carved out a stretch of green at the base of the hills—a quiet haven where the game of golf could take root in northern Utah. Built on former farmland, the course was modest at first: nine holes winding through open fields marked by handdug bunkers and natural creeks. Yet, from the beginning, there was a sense that this was more than just a golf course. It was a meeting ground where businessmen and ranchers, schoolteachers, and soldiers could come together, connected by a shared love for a Scottish game far from its birthplace. By the 1920s, the Club had expanded to a full 18-hole course, boasting lush fairways and a rustic clubhouse that quickly became the heart of Ogden's social scene. Dances, fundraisers, and town meetings filled the rooms as often as post-round toasts. During the hard years of the Great Depression, the Club endured thanks to the stubborn loyalty of its members, who mowed fairways by hand and patched up the

clubhouse roof themselves when funds ran low. As the decades passed, Ogden Golf & Country Club grew in prestige and character. It hosted statewide tournaments, drew players from across the West, and served as a training ground for generations of junior golfers. Some members even went on to national competitions, carrying the careful lessons learned under Ogden's towering cottonwoods.

Today, the Club offers far more than just golf. General Manager Lon Hanson put it: "Great culture is here. The Club offers many amenities besides golf." His words reflect the spirit that has defined Ogden Golf & Country Club for over a century—a commitment to community, family, and creating an environment where everyone feels at home. From tennis courts and a swimming pool to fine dining and vibrant social events, the Club continues to blend tradition with a modern sense of hospitality.

"Guests love it. It's a full-service club with rich history since 1914."

Excitingly, the next chapter in the Club's story is already underway. For the next three years, Ogden Golf & Country Club will host a stop on the prestigious Korn Ferry Tour, the developmental

tour for the PGA. This opportunity will not only showcase the course's beauty and challenge to a national audience, but it will also bring significant benefits to the local community. Increased tourism, economic boosts to local businesses, and a chance for young golfers to see future PGA stars up close are just a few ways Ogden will thrive from this partnership. It marks a proud moment in the Club's long legacy—connecting the smalltown spirit of Ogden to the bright lights of the professional golf world. Through two World Wars, a dozen economic cycles, and the sweeping changes of the late 20th century, Ogden Golf & Country Club has stood steady. Upgrades came— sprinkler systems, renovated greens, a modernized clubhouse—but always to preserve the place's soul. The course remains a tribute to classic golf design: challenging but fair, rooted in the natural beauty of northern Utah. In an age when so much feels fleeting, Ogden Golf & Country Club endures—a green thread tying generations together, where history, community, and new dreams continue to meet under the vast Wasatch sky.

THE PILLARS OF OGDEN

Eight Local Fathers Shaping Lives

ARTICLE BY KATRINA HAMMOND
PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAYLOR HUNTER YOUNG

In Ogden, Utah, tucked against the timeless Wasatch Mountains, the strongest foundations aren’t concrete—they are people. Fathers, especially, form the bedrock of this community, shaping families, generations, and the city itself through love, sacrifice, and simple, everyday moments.

These men don’t always wear suits or stand behind podiums. They’re often in the crowd cheering, working before dawn, or kneeling beside a child to tie a shoelace. They are not only fathers to their children but to countless others, giving freely of their time, wisdom, and hearts.

Their stories deserve to be told—not because they seek the spotlight, but because they shine quietly, humbly, within it every day.

Dr. Chris Hammond is one of these men. A physician at Ogden Clinic and a father by pure devotion, he balances games, concerts, and late-night talks with the same commitment he gives to his patients. He roughhouses with his son and takes his daughter and her best friends camping every summer. His patience is legendary, especially when his daughter "rage quits" a board game. Dr. Hammond’s quiet strength, loyalty, and kindness make him one of Ogden’s most trusted pillars in medicine and fatherhood.

Dr. Chad Eardley of Park Pediatric Dental says, “I love being a dad—it’s the best thing in the world. My kids have taught me to be unselfish, love unconditionally, and stay young, even if they can’t beat me at Mario Kart. Balancing work and family is tricky, but nothing compares to time with my own. Recently, I taught my daughter how to jump-start a car and change a tire. Small lessons, but they meant everything. I hope my kids learn integrity—it touches every part of life. I try to live it daily so they can see and feel it.”

"MY DAD HAS IMPACTED MY LIFE IN SO MANY WAYS.  HE IS THE REASON I TRY MY BEST." -MARA

Todd Libby, owner of 3 Keys Lending, says fatherhood has taught him the depth of unconditional love and the strength of patience. Working from home allows him to be part of daily life, joining his wife’s adventures like taking their toddlers to Argentina. He hopes to instill values of family, gratitude, and a fierce love for life. He recalls a time when his daughter gently reminded him and his wife to be kinder—an everyday moment that left a permanent mark. He hopes his children remember him as a father who was present, proud, and full of love.

Tim Lundlum says, “Fatherhood taught me the importance of grace—giving and needing it. Balancing work, hobbies, and parenting shifts with the seasons, but focusing on my ‘why’ helps me make each day count. I hope to pass on trust in God, a love for others, and a tireless work ethic. All four of Tim's children wrote a special note to him specifically for this article.  The theme from all of his children;  he spends time playing soccer with us, teaches us how to hunt, and puts God first in his life.

Dr. Charles Ivester of Royale Aesthetics says, “Fatherhood taught me that the world is much bigger than myself. I try to make work and parenting coexist by working from home when I can, visiting my kids at school, and choosing

family-centered activities. I hope to pass on honesty, especially being honest with yourself. If my children remember anything, I hope it’s this: treat everyone with respect, no matter their circumstances. My greatest achievement will never be professional—it’s bringing these wonderful souls into the world and loving them fiercely.”

Bob Harvey of Bob Harvey Roofing says, “Fatherhood taught me that love could run deeper than I ever imagined— deeper than my dreams or ambitions. Balancing work and family isn’t easy, but working hard and living fully lets me give my best to my children. I hope they remember to be honest and to find joy in life’s everyday moments. If they remember one thing after I’m gone, I hope it’s this: be kind, and always lift others. Above all, I want them to know they were fiercely, endlessly loved.”

Dr. Dayne Jensen , affectionately known as Dr. Dayne, has a heart big enough to hold a universe. I have seen how he lifts not only his own children but also many others who have adopted him as a second father. His kindness stretches

across oceans—he helped build a surgical center in Ghana and brought his family and friends to serve. Despite his busy schedule, he always shows up for his children, teaching by example that love is an action, not just a word. His life proves that compassion knows no borders and that fatherhood can expand beyond bloodlines.

Pete Lowe of Lowe Law Group is not just my neighbor and friend— he is the heartbeat of a family full of adventure and compassion. Whether biking, rock climbing, or tossing a baseball in the yard, Pete is always fully present with his children. His daughter, Mara, writes, "My dad has impacted my life in so many ways, and I am so glad that I got the father I have today.  I love practicing for my track meets with him and spending time with him at the climbing gym.  He is the reason I try my best, and I love him very much."

Eight fathers. Eight lives of steady influence. Together, they form the invisible scaffolding that holds Ogden up, not through grand gestures but repeated acts of love, small and consistent, daily.

From Healing to Helping

How Star Point Nutrition is Fueling a Community's Wellness Journey

Tucked in the heart of South Ogden, Star Point Nutrition buzzes with a vibrant energy you can feel the moment you walk through the door. More than just a spot for protein shakes or sugar-free drinks, it’s a thriving community built on transformation, resilience, and connection.

Founded by Itzama Garcia—a proud Mexicana, single mom of two, and wellness coach by passion—Star Point Nutrition was born from a deeply personal journey. “I didn’t start with a wellness background," Itzama shares. "Actually, I was unhealthy and uninformed. But after seeing other entrepreneurs thrive in health, I realized I could do it too.”

What began as a personal transformation quickly became a mission: to create a space where others could discover the power of wellness in a supportive, uplifting environment.

Growing up as an immigrant shaped Itzama’s mindset, but entrepreneurship redefined it.

"In our culture, we often inherit the belief that working hard for someone else is the only way to succeed," she says. "But I knew I didn’t want to pass that mentality on to my kids. I wanted more for them and myself."

Today, Star Point Nutrition—run alongside her supportive parents—is a testament to that shift. The shop is more than a wellness stop; it is a home for connection, encouragement, and empowerment. Customers don’t just find energizing drinks and meal replacement shakes—they see a team cheering them on through every step of their health journey. Whether someone is just starting out, exploring new habits, or simply needing a mood boost, Star Point offers flavor and purpose. The menu features sugar-free energy teas, immune-boosting options, plant-based protein shakes, and drinks crafted for digestive and hydration support—each item designed with both taste and results in mind. "We want people to feel

amazing, not just satisfied," Itzama explains. "If we can help someone swap out their daily energy drink or sugary snack for something nourishing, that’s a win."

But Star Point Nutrition offers more than products. Itzama and her team provide wellness evaluations, personalized nutrition plans, at-home guides, and free community workouts every Monday and Sunday. The space itself invites everyone in—sometimes just for a good conversation. "Even a kind word can make a difference," she says. "And if someone wants to build a business from home, we offer mentorship opportunities too."

As for the future, Star Point is just getting started. With plans to expand into multiple locations—including out-of-state—Itzama envisions bringing this kind of personal, holistic support to even more communities.

"Wellness isn’t just about what’s in your cup," she says with a smile. "It’s about what you believe you deserve. We’re here to remind people of that—every single day."

Wasatch Dermatology

A FATHER'S ENDURING INFLUENCE

Over four decades ago, Dr. Willard Maughan set out to build something more than just a dermatology practice — he sought to create a place where every patient would feel truly seen, heard, and cared for. With a vision rooted in personalized, compassionate service, he founded Wasatch Dermatology and quickly earned the trust and respect of the northern Utah community. His commitment to excellence, empathy, and integrity became the bedrock of everything we do.

Today, his daughter, Dr. Julie Maughan, proudly carries forward his legacy. Inspired daily by the principles her father lived by, she has nurtured Wasatch Dermatology into a thriving, family-run clinic, offering a full range of medical and aesthetic dermatology services with the same heartfelt dedication.

This Father’s Day, we honor Dr. Willard Maughan not only for his professional achievements but also for the lasting impact of his character, compassion, and vision. His spirit continues to guide us, reminding us that genuine human connection is at the heart of exceptional care. We are forever grateful for the path he paved and the values he entrusted to us.

Clean Can, Healthier Home

How Trash Blasters Utah is Redefining Clean

When was the last time you cleaned your garbage cans? If you’re like most homeowners, the answer is probably  “not recently.” And while it’s easy to overlook, your trash cans are a hidden hotspot for bacteria, pests, and odors that can affect your home and your health.

Even the most beautiful home can feel less fresh when dirty, smelly bins are hiding around the corner. That’s why we started Trash Blasters Utah — to take care of the jobs that no one loves, but everyone needs.

Meet Seth and Ben, the owners of Trash Blasters Utah. As local college students with a passion for entrepreneurship and a deep love for the community, they saw an opportunity to make a difference and decided to build Trash Blasters Utah! Designed to help busy families take pride in every part of their home, it offers a simple, professional solution to a messy and smelly chore.

Our service isn't just a quick rinse. We use water heated to over 200 degrees to

sanitize your cans, eliminating the bacteria, germs, and pests a basic hose-down leaves behind. After scrubbing your cans spotless, we apply a professional-grade deodorizer and sanitizer to keep them smelling fresh long after leaving.

Even better? We don’t let that dirty water run down the street. We capture and properly dispose of all wastewater, protecting your home and the environment.

It's a level of cleanliness and care you can’t get from doing it yourself.

We get it — a lot of you are hands-on. You take pride in pulling your own weeds, planting your own gardens, and keeping your lawn trimmed just right. But some jobs just aren't worth the mess. Cleaning your cans means dealing with smells, germs, and runoff that can harm your family and community.

Whether you choose monthly, quarterly, or one-time service, our team is committed to delivering fast, thorough, and professional results every time.

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.

A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.

SOMETHING SWEET

This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.

SOMETHING TANGY

Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.

SOMETHING SPICY

This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.

SOMETHING LIQUID

It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.

SOMETHING TOMATO

You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.

THE SPICE COMBINATION

This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.

HOMEMADE

BBQ SAUCE

• 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard

• 1 tablespoon lemon juice

• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

DIRECTIONS

In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.
