Cover Dog Oliver and The Lovely Lily

LOVELAND FLOORING LAYS OUT BIG PLANS

LOVELAND FLOORING LAYS OUT BIG PLANS
There is something so special about the bond between pups and their humans. It’s the reason we do our annual dog cover story. This year’s winner Oliver is no exception. When our team read about the incredible bond Oliver has with his person, 12-year-old Lily, we knew we had found not only a cover dog, but a lovely cover girl as well.
The magical thing about this duo is that they strive to overcome the challenges each of them face, together. Whether it’s Oliver snuggling with Lily when she’s exhausted from a long day at school or Lily calming Oliver when he is anxious, they make each other stronger. In fact, during the cover shoot, Oliver was quite nervous but a hug from Lily eased everything. It’s a beautiful friendship, and we are so happy to share it with you. Thank you, Lily and Oliver, for gracing our cover!

Family-owned, family-focused, family values—a winning combo when it comes to people and products. And it’s the backbone of Loveland Flooring Center, a fresh community business with deep roots, and an even deeper commitment.
Locals Sam David and Dennis Davis took over the former Carpet Depot, and in addition to giving this longstanding Loveland staple a new name, they’ve added new products, new features, and a whole new level of service.
“We are in our community for our community,” says Dennis, of his and Sam’s focus on guiding customers on their flooring journey. “We excel at offering friendly, responsive service.”
Talk about a transformation, the duo have made upgrades to both showroom and service, and added all-new products and materials, including collections like Antrim (a hand-loomed wool line by Stanton) and engineered hardwood lines by Hallmark Floors. They’ve even expanded their in-house team—adding Geoff Moores (Sales), and Randi Granat (Accounting/ Customer Service).
“Everyone’s needs are different, and we do a great job at helping our customers make selections that fit them best—we make the entire process easy,” Dennis adds. “We’re proud to say we have one of the best installation teams.”
They’ve even added pet-resistant and kid-friendly lines, to stand up to the wear and tear four paws and little feet can have on a home’s flooring.
“With Shaw Floors’ Pet Perfect brand, the yarn has a zero absorption rating, so it’s really hard to stain,” Dennis offers. “Plus it’s covered under warranty from the ‘Three Ps’ ... you can guess what that means for pets. Pet Perfect is all about budget-friendly styles that are attractive and easy to clean—meaning they last longer.”
Prefer the hardwood look and style? LFC has you covered there, too, with both luxury vinyl plank flooring and hardwood.
“Attention to detail is never overlooked… we will never cut a corner.
Don’t forget padding, whether you have kids, pets, both, neither—Dennis asserts it’s one of the most important choices a buyer can make.
“We carry padding with a spill guard so no moisture can get through, and antimicrobial padding that is hypoallergenic,” Dennis adds. “Padding is the best way to extend the life of your carpet.”
“Mannington’s Adura LVP is kid and pet-friendly because it’s easy to clean and maintain—it’s also scratch resistant,” says Dennis. “Most LVPs have Microban antimicrobial surface protection infused into the finish to resist bacteria, mildew and mold.”
Hallmark Floors offers engineered hardwood whose top layer is so thick and well made, it can be refinished again and again through its lifetime.
“A lot of people don’t know that hardwood can be stripped down to change its color—you don’t have to tear out the wood to change it to the look you want.”
There’s more—Dennis and Sam expanded their decorative carpet line, for both wall-to-wall installations and custom area rugs and runners. Options that offer the best of today’s desired styles and colors, but many at much lower price than their competitors.
Need more convincing? Dennis and Sam love letting their clients speak for them.
“I love supporting this company! They were very personable and helpful with carpet selection,” offers G. Johnson. “I love the finished product.”
“True customer service is alive and well,” smiles Matt A. “Dennis responded very quickly to help resolve our problem after a water heater malfunction drenched our carpet and padding. He cared. And acted quickly—within two hours, we were well on the way toward a solution.”
“We’re so thankful for the service we received,” adds Lori C. “Dennis and his team were great—I love our flooring and carpet. Very professionally done!”

HISTORY, HORSES AND HOMEARAMA®— THIS YEAR’S SHOWCASE IN GOSHEN HAS IT ALL
ARTICLE BY BILL FURBEE
Even if you don’t own a horse, you’ll still enjoy the tranquility of this beautiful one-of-a-kind development. - Karen
In 1981, Judy and Ken Klosterman of Klosterman Baking Company purchased 250 acres just outside of Loveland in Goshen Township. Naming it Langsem Farm, they developed the property with landscaping and fence-lined pastures. There was a lot of excitement on the acreage—an abandoned mine shaft on the property became home to Ken’s extensive magic collection, and Judy was president and director of the Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association.
When Judy and Ken passed away, attorney Kevin Malof contacted the Klosterman family and acquired Langsem Farm in 2022. His mission? To preserve as much of the farm as possible, and develop it into an equestrian community that honored Judy and Ken Klosterman’s legacy.
The Reserves at Stone Pillars Farm, which Kevin created with partners Dan deStefano, Scott Lucke and Tim Myers, is a 26-lot community located on 39 acres of that original property. It’s also the site of HOMEARAMA® 2024, where some of the region’s leading builders are bringing their own magic to the property.
Produced by the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Greater Cincinnati, HOMEARAMA® is a single-site, new-home showcase celebrating its 61st year, and this year runs August 24 through September 8. HBA’s Karen Pfeiffer says attendees can expect to tour six beautiful, one-of-a-kind homes that are “fully decorated, landscaped with top-of-the-line appliances, ‘smart’ home technology, and the finest in outdoor living—each situated on a 1+-acre lot, starting at $1.25M.”
“We are really excited to have HOMEARAMA® at The Reserves at Stone Pillars Farm,” Kevin says, “because it allowed us to limit the amount of development at the farm while creating an amazing community that appreciates the passion of an equine community while preserving a part of its history.”
Although only a few miles from I-275 and I-71, Kevin says, “when walking across pastures or through the
old growth pine forests, you feel like you are miles away from civilization.”
“We always tell people that sunsets are better at Stone Pillars Farm, while we sit in rocking chairs that line the front of our stables,” Kevin adds. “When asked how we describe the experience at the farm, the only word that comes to mind for us is ‘peaceful.’”
This year’s HOMEARAMA® show will be different from past years, Karen explains, as The Reserves at Stone Pillars Farm features rural luxury at its finest. “Homeowners and show visitors will experience the serenity of life in Goshen Township,” she adds. “The neighborhood will feature three miles of walking and bridle trails, a stable for boarding horses, and an equestrian center … all just minutes from I-275, downtown Loveland and the Loveland Bike Trail.”
The energy HOMEARAMA® brings to this region is undeniable, and Karen herself has gotten caught up in the festivities. “I’m most excited about the equestrian lifestyle that The Reserves at Stone Pillars Farm offers,” she says. “Living at Stone Pillars Farm offers a unique and rewarding experience for those who enjoy an equestrian lifestyle. The community features amenities and services designed to cater to horse owners and enthusiasts, from spacious riding arenas and stables to access to miles of scenic trails for horseback riding. There’s a clear sense of community and camaraderie that comes with sharing a passion for horses.”
In short, it’s a horse-lover’s dream come true. But you don’t need to be an equestrian expert to enjoy all that The Reserves at Stone Pillars Farm provides. Residents can enjoy the opportunity to connect with like-minded neighbors and participate in equestrian events and activities, such as horse shows, clinics and trail rides. “Even if you don’t own a horse,” Karen says, “you’ll still enjoy the tranquility of this beautiful oneof-a-kind development.”
HOMEARAMA® 2024 will feature six fully decorated and landscaped homes in a variety of architectural styles. Builders include Robert Lucke Group, Wieland Builders, Chris Gorman Homes, deStefano Homes & Remodeling, Andrew Arthur Homes, and Elevate by Drees Homes—each one providing not only truly remarkable living scenarios, but cutting-edge design and inventive features as well.
Among its special features is a lavish kitchen with custom Amish cabinets, a hidden pantry, and Sub-Zero/ Wolf package appliances.
Don’t miss the octagonal hearth room with white oak beams, a cozy fireplace, kitchen access, and a walk-in pantry to accommodate large family dining.
Sunlight from the great room’s expansive windows shines on the sleek, porcelain-faced fireplace that rises 16 feet up to the ceiling—a great spot to gather.
DESTEFANO HOMES & REMODELING: THE OLD IRVINGTON
Look for the plank and herringbone hardwood, rustic beamed ceiling details, exotic quartz countertops and twostory fireplace, and California shower-tub primary bath.
Check out this full-size prep kitchen, enabling the best in French cooking with a Cornufe professional range.
The inviting feel is personified by a grand stone fireplace with a raised hearth, providing an immediate statement upon entering the home.
More than simply an inspiring new home showcase, HOMEARAMA® will feature equestrian events, carriage rides, therapy horses, and even a pony party. Getting through all the homes can be a lot for young ones, so Pete DeLois of Recreations Outlet will have a kids playset on hand—and don’t forget to check the schedule of events for Pet Adoption Day.
There are many more events than just those, however; wine and craft beer tastings, Q102 appearances, art shows, live music, food trucks and other special happenings are also planned. Loveland Lifestyle partners at HOMEARAMA® 2024 include The BMW Store, Gallery Veronique, O’Bannon Creek Golf Club, Curated Fine Furnishings, and McSwain Carpets & Floors.

Luka’s curled tail is wagging like a windshield wiper on high as he bounces around the yard on three legs with his canine pal, Callie. It’s hard to imagine a happier dog. It’s even harder to imag-
time. She knew Miles wouldn’t survive in the shelter, so she took him home.
Over the next few weeks, Jennifer— with financial help from many generous people—began to address Miles’ medi-
ine the circumstances of Luka’s life a mere four months ago.
Luka is one of 70 dogs airlifted to the U.S. from a sanctuary in the war-ravaged West Bank of Israel in March by SPCA International. Luka and seven other dogs were put on a plane at JFK and flown to Lunken Airport. There, they were met by Jennifer Salatin of Paws for Miles, a foster-based dog rescue based in Loveland. Seven were transported to foster homes that day. Luka went home to foster with Jennifer herself.
Luka and most of the others who made the journey are Canaans—a Husky-like breed and national dog of Israel. Stepping up to help Luka and the others was right in line with the reason Jennifer founded Paws for Miles in 2017. It started with Miles—a three-yearold pit bull whose abuse by previous owners is hard to take in ... the results of which caused Miles to lose the use of his back legs. He ended up at a local SPCA where Jennifer worked at the
cal needs. Sadly, his injuries—along with cancer, which was discovered— were too overwhelming. Miles died a few weeks later.
Jennifer’s fundraising efforts to help him, however, had been very successful. So, to honor his memory and help her transition to starting her own animal rescue service, Jennifer founded Paws for Miles—a fitting tribute in both name and effort.
Today, PFM accepts dogs of all breeds, ages, temperaments and physical abilities. Most come from the tristate area, but Jennifer and her team of five volunteers have also taken dogs in crisis situations from other parts of the country, in addition to PFM’s extraordinary efforts this past March to save dogs caught up in war.
To be clear, PFM is not a shelter. Every rescue is placed in a pre-selected foster home where they are cared for and their medical needs met until the dog can be adopted. To date, PFM has found forever homes for more than a 1,000 dogs.
Despite the mental and emotion rewards of saving so many dogs, the work can be daunting, especially the costs. “When dogs have to have surgery, it can be several thousand dollars to get them healthy enough to adopt,” Jennifer says. “We fundraise, but there’s never enough money.”
So, what keeps her going? “It’s when you get that call from an older person or a mom saying how much the dog has changed their lives.” Dogs just like Luka.
There’s more you can do, too. Consider fostering or adopting a dog; contribute directly to this amazing cause by donating or becoming a sponsor. Or peruse PFM’s online list of upcoming events and their gallery of irresistible doggos ready for adoption— talk about going the extra miles.

FUN OF THE IN-HOUSE
ARTICLE BY CHRIS SHERRITT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J. CAPPS
Tucked neatly behind Paxton’s Grill in downtown Loveland is the Railway Barber Shop. Judging solely by its simple exterior, you’d never suspect the wonderland that awaits inside.
Owner Brian Maxson has been in this spot since November of 2021, and is masterful at playing with sharp objects. Highly sought after for everything from “just-take-a-little-off-the-top” trims to ultra-cool, signature haircuts like skin fades, The Loveland Flip, and The Joe Burrow. A longtime Loveland resident who is deeply committed to his community, Maxson’s been described as an oldschool barber with a modern, tattooed twist.
There’s no mistaking the interior of the shop is all Brian—an equal study in contrasts. Impeccably clean and well organized, but then there’s the hip music, eclectic artwork, cattle horns, taxidermy, live lizard, and … so, for a guy with such a unique, creative vision for his business, is it any real surprise that he wanted to add a full-scale arcade?
Not long after opening the shop, Brian began to dream of tapping into his lifelong passion for vintage pinball and arcade games to transform the backroom into an amusement space. When completed, the arcade would be available for clients to enjoy—but also a fun, safe space for any other kids and parents visiting historic Loveland.
CONTINUED >
Decision made, the hunt began. Working every angle of the arcade collector market, Maxson located the classic Frogger game first, then the next machine, then the next. Years and countless miles later, he’s hit the jackpot with a total of eight games for everyone to enjoy: Frogger, Cruis’n USA, Galaga, Ms. Pac-Man, Rambo, and Twin Eagle arcade games ; plus Mata Hari and Gorgar pinball machines. As for favorites? Brian easily bumps Mata Hari to the top of the list.
According to Maxson, it’s roughly a 50/50 split between adult and youth players. Kids eagerly jumping in first, quickly followed by parents who can’t resist the sound of the iconic bells, chimes and flippers. Some pro tips for your own upcoming visit: all machines take quarters ( Frogger is free), and there’s no change machine on premises. Arcade hours are the same as the barber shop: 10a–7p Tuesday through Friday, 9a–4p Saturday. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Open to clients and the public.
After the years of searching, traveling, expense and maintenance, we simply had to ask Brian the burning question: what’s really behind this crazy idea of creating an arcade inside a barber shop? As the father of two young girls himself, the answer brings a smile.“I love opening up the world of pinball to children while also sharing a bit of nostalgia with their parents. Just be sure to bring a pocketful of quarters!”
As for the future of the arcade, there are big plans. Maxson’s goal is to expand his BarberCade space and fill it exclusively with vintage pinball machines. He’s always on the lookout for new acquisitions, so if you have a machine to sell, he says hit him up!
See it for yourself. The next time you’re in downtown Loveland with the family to grab a bite, bike, or browse the stores, swing by the Railway Barber Shop for a sharp new cut and quick throwback game of Frogger.

It’s that time of year where we give a big round of a-paws to our Dog Cover contest winner—meet Oliver, the one-year-old Afghan hound! Oliver has a remarkable story, but to truly understand Oliver, it’s important you meet Lily as well. Lily is 12 years old, and the daughter of Derek and Jessica Tye, owners/proprietors of Branch Hill Estate & Ranch, a local fave for farm tours and vacation home rentals. It’s from Jessica that we learned about the truly unique relationship Lily and Oliver share. “We adopted Lily from China almost 10 years ago—she has a lot of challenges medically;
she spent a lot of time in the ICU. She’s non-verbal, and on top of a few different medical conditions and syndromes, is epileptic,” Jessica explains of their daughter. Initially, the family noticed how well Lily got along with their standard poodle, Tuscan.
“He’s been her therapy dog since she came home.
Tuscan was such a good dog, he slept with her every night … it was amazing.”
“But with Tuscan getting older, we needed to bring in another dog,” reasons Jessica, on why the family decided getting Lily a dog of her own was imperative. “A puppy wasn’t going to be much help to Lily at first—we wanted to get them acclimated, to grow together.”
Tuscan had been such a vital part of Lily’s life as an emotional support dog, this plan would give them the ability to integrate a new dog—allowing Lily and a puppy to form a bond on their own timeline. Thus the search began.
“We knew we needed a hypoallergenic dog, one that doesn’t shed—initially, we thought we’d go with another standard poodle. But as we were doing research and talking to other people in the doggy
world, someone mentioned an Afghan hound, which is a dog I’ve loved my whole life.”
The breed matched their hypoallergenic-needs, but better than that, Afghan hounds are known for being very calm and aloof. Stoic, even. Jessica describes them a little differently, “They’re emotionally in tune with people.” Perfect for a little girl with big emotions.
Oliver came along not too long after that. “When we found him, Oliver was five months old,” Jessica recalls. “He’s awesome at our house, absolutely loves our family, and is completely comfortable. He’s a whole different dog here.” But when out of his comfort zone, Oliver gets a little anxious. As a pup he was never socialized, so he tended to be terrified of, well, everything outside of the house, something he’s currently working on with a trainer. Jessica acknowledges the work. “It might be a challenge, but at the same time, we’ve got this dog who is very much going to understand Lily. They’ve both faced challenges,” she adds. “Instead of being some outgoing dog who doesn’t need Lily, they rely on each other.”
CONTINUED >
And it’s worked out beautifully. “Lily comes home every day from school exhausted, and the first thing she does is take a nap with Oliver,” Jessica shares fondly of their daughter’s bond with the Afghan hound—he’s a companion for her, a shoulder to lean on. “Having a dog for her is really more of an emotional and therapeutic thing. Lily can express her emotions to her dogs,” Jessica explains. “She can’t run, she can’t jump, she
can’t do a lot of physical activity. But Oliver loves to chase balls, so she does her best to throw a ball for him, and he’s super patient. Lily is with Oliver all the time. He follows her around.”
Because of his hard work, patience and kindness, Oliver is truly a “star-worthy” dog. Jessica sums it up perfectly, “Oliver’s not just a pretty face, he’s a kind dog, he’s a working dog, he’s got a job. He’s more than just a companion.”
Along with being featured on this month’s cover, Oliver has also won a basket of goodies that any dog would slobber over! Thank you to Pet Wants, Luna Bella, Zoomin Groomin and Dale Robertson Jewelry for providing “top dog” gifts to our prized pooch.

As an adult walking through downtown Loveland, there’s always plenty to do. Options abound—restaurants and bars and boutiques offering oneof-a-kind items to fulfill your every shopping need. Plus the bike path and sports equipment outfitters, all geared toward outdoor enthusiasts.
But as a teen, you may have felt relegated to mostly outdoor spaces, hanging out by the river or along the bike path. That is, until recently.
Enter Playa Bowls Loveland, New Jersey’s original acai shop, serving up smoothie bowls and other healthy items now in historic downtown–and where local teens are flocking in droves, both as a place of employment and enjoyment.
“THE TEAM HERE BUILT A CONNECTION WITH EACH OTHER THAT JUST RADIATES POSITIVITY.” - ELLE
It’s not hard to see why teens are drawn to Playa Bowls— its bright facade welcomes you into an interior filled with tropical vibes, from the colorful menu boards to the beachythemed, hand-painted wall art.
Owner Aimee Jacob says teens were exactly the demographic she had in mind when opening Playa Bowls this spring in the former Loveland Sweet Shoppe location.
“We wanted Playa Bowls Loveland to be a great place to go with a friend or a group,” she explains. “Whether before or after school, after a practice or as a weekend gathering spot, we wanted teens to say, ‘let’s meet at Playa Bowls!’”
In addition to being a great high-schooler hang, Playa Bowls is also the perfect place to work. Aimee says she had more than 200 teens apply when they first opened, ultimately hiring 23 crew members with ages ranging from 15-20.
“One of the most rewarding parts of opening this business has been seeing the drive and ambition of so many teens,” Aimee adds. “It’s the perfect after-school and summer job. Our crew has fun, works hard and learns life skills while being on a team.”
Elle Ostholthoff, 16-year-old Loveland resident and employee, agrees. “The team here built a connection with each other that just radiates positivity,” she smiles. “People like the beachy theme, summer vibes and great atmosphere— plus, the bowls are soo good!”
Aimee’s recos to tempt you with the most popular Playa Bowls:
Nutella® Bowl. Playa Acai topped with blueberry flax granola, strawberry, banana, coconut flakes and Nutella®.
Pura Vida. Playa Acai topped with blueberry flax granola, strawberry, blueberry and honey.
