The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best.

Like most people that grew up in Kansas City, the Country Club Plaza was a big part of our holiday traditions. We would typically drive through the surrounding neighborhoods along Ward Parkway to see the lights on the beautiful homes and streets, and then drive through the plaza as well. It was so exciting to walk past the store windows that were filled with displays of animated carolers, model trains, snow filled landscapes with children playing, and mechanical elves, reindeer, and of course Mr. and Mrs. Claus. It was so magical.
My grandparents lived just off of the plaza making it more beautiful to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. My grandma would set up the most perfect and pristine traditional Christmas tree with the multicolored large bulb lights and strings of silver tinsel garland. The packages were always wrapped like they were wrapped at the department store. For us, sitting at the “kids” table was a treat. Gathering around the table with all of my siblings and cousins was nearly as much fun as opening gifts. I often wonder if children today grow and have that same magical feeling thinking back to memories of the holidays like we experienced. It is hard to imagine that their memories could compare to the experiences we had growing up in the sixties and seventies. We had it pretty good!
While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other by extending grace, empathy and love.
Happy Holidays!

Bringing live entertainment to Kansas City all year long
ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The Kansas City Ballet’s The Nutcracker is a beloved holiday tradition, captivating audiences with its enchanting story, stunning choreography and vibrant costumes and sets. From December 6th through the 24th, the Muriel Kauffman Theatre at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts will once again host this magical production.

Kansas City Ballet Artistic Director Devon Carney says, “Our vibrant production of The Nutcracker is a tradition deeply established in the Kansas City holiday season. It means the world to me to see the joy and sparkle in the eyes of our audiences of all ages, as they are transported to a whimsical winter wonderland and a beautiful land of the sweets in this classic tale. It just wouldn’t be the holidays in Kansas City without our audiences enjoying our wonderful production at the Muriel Kauffman Theatre!"
While the show unfolds effortlessly on stage, the work behind the scenes is an intricate collaboration among designers, artists and choreographers. Elaborate costumes, lavish sets and enchanting choreography all combine to create this beautiful atmosphere for audiences of all ages.
The breathtaking set design takes audiences from a cozy Victorian holiday party to the fantastical world of dancing snowflakes and sugar plum fairies. Scenic Designer Alain Vaës has crafted sets for ballet companies around the world, bringing his signature style to the production. His design work includes a Christmas tree that grows 30 feet tall on stage and a unicorn-drawn hot air balloon that whisks characters into the air.
Costumes are designed by Holly Hynes and play an equally vital role in bringing the play to life. Known globally for her work with the New York City Ballet and other prestigious ballet companies, she ensures every costume, from Clara’s festive party dress to the Sugar Plum Fairy’s glittering gown, adds a layer of enchantment to the performance. Her designs allow dancers to move with grace and precision while dazzling the audience with their detail and holiday sparkle.

Lighting designer, Trad A Burns, adds another layer of visual wonder to the production. Burns, who has designed lighting for over 400 ballet productions worldwide, uses light to transform each scene, from the soft glow of a winter night to the shimmering brilliance of the Land of the Sweets. His work perfectly complements the choreography, enhancing the magic on stage. Accompanied by Tchaikovsky’s iconic score performed live by the Kansas City Symphony, these elements combine to create an unforgettable theatrical experience.
In addition to The Nutcracker performances, the Kansas City Ballet will host the Sugar Plum Fairy Children’s Ball on December 7th at the Muehlebach Tower of the Kansas City Marriott Downtown. This family-friendly event led by the Sugar Plum Fairy herself promises an exciting holiday
experience for children and parents alike. Children will be treated to face painting, a complimentary photo with the Sugar Plum Fairy and holiday-themed activities. Meanwhile, parents can enjoy shopping at the Nutcracker Marketplace and bidding in the silent auction. The threecourse luncheon is followed by a special performance from Kansas City Ballet School students and a reading of the story. After the ball, families will head to the Kauffman Center for a matinee performance of The Nutcracker, completing a day filled with holiday cheer.
Whether you’re a first-time viewer or a longtime fan, the magic is sure to ignite the holiday spirit and inspire joy for all who attend. The Muriel Kauffman Theatre at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is located at 1601 Broadway Blvd in Kansas City. For more information, visit kcballet.org.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org

• Fresh oranges
• Toothpick or cocktail pick
• Whole cloves
• Citrus zester or lino cutting tool
• Twine or ribbon (optional)

Festive orange pomanders made with just fresh oranges and whole cloves not only look beautiful but have a holiday smell you can’t resist.
1. With a citrus zester cut decorative lines and patterns into the orange peel. Tip: Save orange ribbons as garnishes for cocktails, holiday charcuterie trays or stovetop potpourri.
2. Use a toothpick to make a hole into the peel. This will help insert the cloves.
3. Insert a clove into each premade hole. Continue making holes and inserting cloves until the design is complete.
Depending on the depth of your decorative lines, pomanders will last for days to months at room temperature. If you want to ensure pomanders stay fresh then store them in the refrigerator until ready to display.

• Hang the smaller pomanders as ornaments on your tree or in a window.
• Arrange pomanders as a table centerpiece with whole nuts or pine cones.

Everyone talks about trust, but there are times when few understand what it really is. The choice to trust another with your money and especially your individual roadmap to a safe and comfortable retirement is clearly one of the most valuable currencies in today’s economy. Our unique trust-based planning approach starts not with the goal of selling, but rather the opportunity to serve.
A lot has changed in our economy, yet some traditional financial experts continue to recommend the same investing philosophy of “buy and hold, remember we are in this for the long-term." At Summit Pointe, we took a page out of the medical playbook by systematically asking the right questions to learn more about your holistic personal, family, and legacy goals; we go beyond traditional financial gurus. Think of us as your financial doctors.
Ironically, many in the financial planning marketplace are more than happy to offer onesize-fits-all solutions without regard to you and your family’s most important priorities. We feel our team-based fact finding approach at Summit Pointe is today’s game-changer.
Our comprehensive financial planning x-ray begins with a “client-first” consultation to confidentially learn more about your aspirations and objectives. We clearly understand that our responsibility is to work alongside you and your family to guide you on the pathway to stress-free financial health.
There are many financial decisions we make each day, based on information we believe to be correct; one of the biggest problems we identify is the inability to focus on what little time we frequently place on planning our financial future or managing our investable assets. It is so true; we often spend more time planning our vacations than we do planning our finances. The Summit Pointe team approach provides educational value and personalizes your experience. We actively listen to your pain points and, most importantly, we stay in touch.
The Summit Pointe team represents a skillful resource in all aspects of financial planning including retirement and investments strategies, risk management, charitable giving programs, life insurance, long-term care and disability needs, employee/executive benefits, Medicare/Medicaid options, and inclusive educational workshops for individuals, families, and business owners. Elevate your holiday hot chocolate with a charcuterie experience
As winter settles in and the air chills, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Take it up a notch and indulge in a hot cocoa charcuterie board. Picture a delightful spread of various hot chocolate flavors, mix-ins, and toppings, inviting you to create a personalized, delicious mug of joy.
Ingredients
• ¼ cup 60% cacao chocolate morsels
• ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa
• 1/3 cup white granulated sugar
• 2 cups milk
• 2 cups half and half
• 1 pinch salt
• ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Directions
Heat all ingredients (except vanilla extract) in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-low heat until almost boiling. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
Gone are the days of selecting only between marshmallows and whipped cream as toppings. With a hot cocoa charcuterie board, you can delve into a world of flavors, textures and spices that will make each sip an adventure.
Begin by selecting a variety of flavors and mix-ins, such as mini marshmallows, salted caramels, white chocolate morsels and peppermints. Pair your hot cocoa with delectable treats like cookies, gum drops, crème-filled wafer rolls or chocolate-covered espresso beans. Consider adding biscotti, chocolate-dipped spoons or chocolate-coated pretzels as well as whipped toppings and an assortment of sprinkles.

Winter brings shorter days, cooler weather, and, unfortunately, more illnesses. Children are especially vulnerable to catching colds, the flu, RSV, strep throat, and other winter infections. Keeping your child healthy during the colder months can be challenging, but with some preventive steps, you can help reduce the risk of illness and ease symptoms when they get sick. Here’s what you need to know to keep your kids healthier this winter.
Common Winter Illnesses in Children
Wintertime illnesses in children are often viral, but some can be bacterial. Understanding these common winter ailments can help you identify symptoms early.
• Colds: Colds are one of the most frequent winter illnesses, marked by sneezing, a runny nose, mild fever, and congestion. Though they’re usually mild, colds can make kids feel pretty miserable.
• Flu (Influenza): The flu can hit hard and fast, bringing fever, chills, body aches, and fatigue. Kids with the flu may have less energy and may need extra rest to recover.
• RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus): RSV affects the respiratory tract and is most serious for infants and younger children. It can cause wheezing, coughing, and difficulty breathing, so monitoring symptoms closely is important.
• Strep Throat: Strep throat is a bacterial infection that brings a severe sore throat, fever, and swollen glands. It requires antibiotic treatment, so check with your pediatrician if these symptoms appear.
• Ear Infections: Ear infections often follow colds and can cause ear pain, fever, and irritability. These infections are more common in young children because of their smaller ear anatomy.
Preventive Tips to Keep Kids Healthy
To help your child avoid winter illnesses, encourage good hygiene, healthy habits, and preventive care.
• Handwashing: Make handwashing a priority. Encourage your child to wash their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20
seconds, especially after school, playtime, and before eating.
• Vaccinations: The flu vaccine is highly recommended each winter to help prevent severe flu symptoms. If your child hasn’t received the flu shot this season, it’s not too late.
• Hydration: Keep your child well-hydrated. Drinking water helps flush toxins from the body and keeps the immune system functioning optimally. Warm beverages like herbal teas can also be comforting.
• Healthy Diet: A nutritious diet is vital to immune health. Include foods rich in vitamins, especially vitamin C, such as oranges, strawberries, and bell peppers. Healthy snacks like yogurt and nuts also support immunity.
• Adequate Sleep: Kids need plenty of rest to fight off germs. Ensure they get the recommended amount of sleep for their age, which is usually 9–12 hours per night for school-aged children.
Reducing Germ Spread in the Home and School
Winter illnesses can spread quickly among children, especially in shared spaces. Here are some ways to limit the spread:
• Disinfect Common Areas: Regularly disinfect high-touch surfaces in your home, like door handles, light switches, and shared toys. This reduces germs that children can pick up.
• Coughing and Sneezing Etiquette: Teach children to cough or sneeze into a tissue or the inside of their elbow. This helps contain germs and keeps them from spreading to surfaces or other kids.
• Avoid Close Contact When Sick: If your child feels unwell, keep them home from school or daycare to prevent spreading illness to others. Avoid playdates or group activities until symptoms subside.
Recognizing Early Symptoms of Winter Care Tips for When Illness Strikes
We’re looking for dedicated Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) and Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) to join our full-time team in a dynamic and rapidly expanding practice. Apply online: www.communitychoicepeds.com/careers/
Sometimes, despite best efforts, kids still get sick. Here are some at-home care tips to help them recover comfortably.
• Hydration and Rest: Make sure your child stays hydrated by offering water, herbal teas, or diluted fruit juice. Encourage plenty of rest, as sleep helps the body recover more quickly.
• Use a Humidifier: A cool-mist humidifier can help relieve congestion and ease breathing. Be sure to clean the humidifier regularly to prevent mold and bacteria growth.
• Medication for Fever and Discomfort: Over-the-counter fever reducers, like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help relieve fever and minor discomfort. Always follow dosing instructions carefully and consult your pediatrician before giving any new medications.
• When to Seek Medical Help: Some symptoms should never be ignored. Contact your doctor if your child has a high fever, difficulty breathing, severe pain, or if symptoms worsen despite care at home.
Keeping kids healthy in the winter requires a bit of extra effort, but reducing the risk of illness is worth it. Encourage good habits like handwashing, a balanced diet, and plenty of sleep to support their health. Remember, early intervention is critical. If you’re concerned about any symptoms, reach out to your pediatrician. Together, we can help your child stay happy, healthy, and ready to enjoy the winter season!
