CHEERS TO DAD!
This month we turn our attention to the men – celebrating not only the fathers in our life, but a variety of influential local men from all walks of life. We included a variety of industries - from nonprofit, to mental health, to members only clubs - and asked some local leaders to share their expertise and wisdom. If you think we missed some important male leaders in this issue, please let us know, and nominate who we should feature for next year’s Men’s issue. We’d love to hear from you!
And with Father’s Day in just a few weeks, we included a classic cocktail recipe to celebrate with and a fun gift guide courtesy of Tommy Bahama (see page 26 for full article).
We hope you enjoy this month’s issue. Happy June, and Happy Father’s Day!

LOCAL EXPERTS DISCUSS HOW AND WHY
MEN ENGAGE (OR DON’T ENGAGE) IN THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS.
Self Space is a group mental health practice, offering psychotherapy services to adults, adolescents and couples. Self Space believes therapy is first and foremost a relationship with an open, non-judgmental professional with whom you can safely share your whole self with and experience real and significant change. This article emerged from a conversation between Marcus Berley and Dan Suffoletta, two mental health counselors at Self Space, in which they share insights into an often-overlooked aspect of counseling: how and why men engage (or don’t engage) in the therapeutic process.
MARCUS: I find that many men, are dragged through the doors of therapy rooms by their partners. I think this reveals a societal trend in which men’s engagement with mental health services often relies on their primary relationship. This makes it crucial for therapists to foster a space in which men can discover the intrinsic value of self-reflection and emotional work.
DAN: A lot of my research in the field has focused on exactly this topic, encapsulated in my capstone project titled, “Real Men Go to Therapy”. The project explores the effects of initial client motivation on therapeutic outcomes, and I found that a lot of men were saying, “My partner really encouraged me to do this and to be here,” underscoring the significant role partners play in men’s initial steps toward therapy.
I’ve found that even if you don’t start from a place of intrinsic or internal motivation, if the therapist or counselor is able to influence that, and allow the client to realize that there are intrinsic benefits to doing self-work, then that does lead to more positive outcomes.
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SELF SPACEMARCUS: The key seems to lie in the counselor’s ability to guide their clients toward recognizing the personal gains of therapy, moving beyond societal expectations or relationship pressures.
Men may find themselves in therapy after significant life upheavals, particularly when relationships break down. It’s often not until things blow up that they’re like, “You know what, it’s time I did this work.” Crises often catalyze the decision to seek help.
Hegemonic ideals of masculinity have long cast a shadow over men’s mental health. These societal norms emphasize strength, self-reliance, and an aversion to showing any sort of signs of weakness, and act as formidable barriers to men seeking help. Yet, these barriers are not impermeable. Therapy itself can become a groundbreaking arena where traditional notions of masculinity are challenged, and men can learn to embrace vulnerability as a strength rather than a weakness.
DAN: I tend to take a strength-based approach. I will kind of celebrate the courage that they’ve already shown. From addressing the apprehension of being judged or deemed “the problem” in a relationship, to celebrating the courage it takes to embark on the therapeutic journey, the most impactful therapy is filled with empathy, validation, and empowerment. This can help men engage more fully in the therapeutic process and help create a space where men can feel acknowledged and supported in their journey towards healing.

Walk to all the things, including your local, public beach spot, and enjoy incredible views of Lake Union on your private rooftop deck.
In 2018, builders Gamut360 envisioned this boutique cluster of central Eastlake townhomes with a view to bring an up-market, luxury twist to the traditional Seattle townhouse blueprint. In so doing, they designed a highly desirable floor plan that maximizes living spaces while never compromising on the details.
As you enter, hardwood floors lead you into a chef’s kitchen with ample quartz counters, sleek, modern cabinetry and high end appliances, such as a Viking stove top and ovens. Progress through to a sunlit living room and step out onto a fully enclosed, turfed patio area with room for storage.
Space has not been compromised in the sleeping quarters - upstairs you will find two large bedrooms with dedicated full bath, and a spacious, privately sumptuous, top floor primary suite.
The property has been artfully upgraded by the current owner to include bespoke California closets in the pantry and all three bedrooms, automatic blinds throughout the home, frameless shower doors, security cameras, rooftop built-in speakers and turfed exteriors. Custom wallpaper accents give this home an enviable design flair.
Walk up to an incredible rooftop terrace, soaking up views of Lake Union and the Olympics. Entertain at your leisure, with luxury details that include an outdoor wet bar, gas firepit, drinks fridge and bar cart.

MR. LUKE JOHNSON RETIRES FROM LAKEVIEW ELEMENTARY AFTER 46 YEARS OF TEACHING.
“The joy of learning and discovery is a wonderful thing at any age.”
Spend a couple of minutes with Mr. Luke Johnson and it’s clear he is on to something. A popular 3rd grade teacher at Lakeview Elementary, he can’t walk through the school without one of the children calling out to him or just going straight in for a hug. He greets students with gentleness and a chill, loving vibe. My daughter is one of his students this year, and she describes him as “classic.” It’s a great descriptor –he handwrites the kids’ worksheets and includes their names in the math story problems. He wrote them poems on Valentine’s Day. His classroom is lined with the “Great Illustrated Classics,” exposing the kids to a literary world beyond Dog Man. His license plate proclaims “LEARN.” At the kids’ art fair last fall, he was there with Mrs. Johnson and their friends, dressed as if they were going to The Met. The kids know that they matter to Mr. Johnson.
Luke grew up in a small town in Wisconsin with his mother, brother, and two sisters – his father died in a sudden accident when Luke was just 3 years old. Life must have been sad and hard from that moment, but his mom showed great resilience and took hold of family matters. Luke had an influential 5th grade teacher, Mr. Byrns, who showed kindness and connection and sparked an interest in teaching. After a visit to the World’s Fair here in 1962, Luke thought Seattle seemed like a marvelous place to be. He attended PLU and has been here ever since.
This year will be his last year of teaching, wrapping up a 46 year career as an educator. He has walked to
and from school each day (carrying his grandfather’s metal lunch box) dedicating his life to teaching the children of Kirkland, Juanita and Redmond. As someone who has encountered Mr. Johnson several times and always left feeling a little brighter, I wanted to see if he had any thoughts he could share with the people of Kirkland on the occasion of his retirement.
He says, “A lot of young people want to change the world – like that song [by 70s British rockers Ten Years After] ‘I’d Love to Change the World, But I Don’t Know What To Do.’ I know how! Teach!” His face animates knowing that he has found an answer. “Technology has its place, but human connection and learning will always be needed.”
He advises parents to listen to their kids, to stay positive and avoid the trap of comparison. Honor your child’s individuality. Reinforce effort and celebrate successes.
He has learned many things from his students. “The joy of learning and discovery is a wonderful thing at any age. I’ve also learned the future of this country is in good hands. These young people are bright, industrious, and eager to make the world a better place.”
Mr. Johnson doesn’t think the kids may always remember exactly what he taught them, but he hopes they will remember how he made them feel. What a wonderful impression he has made on the children of our city. Us adults too.
Think of Luke on the first day of school next year –he will be sitting at a café with Mrs. Johnson in Paris, kicking off retirement.
