its caregivers in mind. All the caregivers are considered employees, not independent contractors, and are covered by insurance. This protects the caregiver if an accident on the job should occur. Ndeye Faty, an Agency caregiver, is quite devoted to her patient of more than one year. She cares for this patient 12 hours per day and provides assistance with homemaking services such as shopping, meal preparation, and enjoys accompanying her to church on Sundays. Ndeye remarks, “I realized just after meeting my patient, we shared a love for cooking. I am able to assist her in the kitchen, allowing her to maintain her independence while safely enjoying one of her favorite hobbies.” Along with keeping her client safe and comfortable, Ndeye has developed a close bond with her patient during their time together. The services provided by The Lisa Vogel Agency are either paid privately or with benefits from a Long-Term Care Insurance policy. For insurance patients, the Agency staff will assist with the entire claim process, beginning with an initial call to confirm benefits. “This call helps our patients better understand their policy in order to plan their care schedule and prepare for any out-of-pocket expenses,” said Chelsea. In addition to the initial call, the Agency will handle claim paperwork, weekly billing, and will also collect the payment directly from the insurance company. “The LTC claim process can be a very daunting task for our patients – sometimes an approval can take up to 90 days – but we continue to service our patients and advocate on their behalf until the claim is approved.” Basically the Lisa Vogel Agency fills a growing demand for in-home care. If given the choice, who wouldn’t prefer to be cared for at home and in familiar surroundings when individual nursing care is needed? The service also lifts a burden off the shoulders of family members who sometimes find caring for their loved ones to be overwhelming. “Our growth in Montgomery County has been so exciting,” Lisa notes. She considers re-creating her model and opening offices in new territories over the next few years, but Lisa never wants her Agency to lose its personal touch – “that is what is most important to me.”

She knows the power of “please and thank you,” the original magic words, and when her students learn that power, it changes everything. A former international human-resources professional, Gloria became a certified Montessori School Administrator and later opened her own Montessori school before developing a stand-alone after-school etiquette program that she grew into what is now the Youth School of Etiquette. On the Island Pride Jerk Chicken Pasta, Joan said the “sauce looks like alfredo but it is our own and it is not alfredo. It has become people’s favorite.” Some of the specialized drinks available from Island Pride include Red Stripe Jamaican beer, and a Jamaican rum punch. “We make it with natural fruit juice and Jamaican rum. This is our own recipe,” explained Joan. Joan and her catering team are happy to bring the party to a client’s venue, or host events at Island Pride Oasis Catering, which can accommodate up to 100 people. No matter the location, Joan promises a beautiful, flawless event. Joan can help a client achieve their dream wedding, birthday party, corporate or other event by assisting with the flowers and other décor but the food always takes center stage. “Customers say I have the best food,” said Joan. “I have never done an event of any kind where the food is not the highlight of that event.” She added, “It’s in my heart to make sure that whatever I serve is served well, and with a lot of love. TREASURE HUNT FINDING PERFECTION AT THE SMITHSONIAN CRAFT SHOW

THERE’S A THRILL WHEN YOU SEE IT – THAT PERFECT ITEM THAT DELIGHTS YOUR EYE OR LIVES UP TO YOUR VALUES OR FITS LIKE A JIGSAW PUZZLE Members of the Smithsonian Women’s Committee: L-R Anita Carson, Arlene Fleming, Deon Woods-Bell, Helen Schmitz, Judi Portugal, Martha Spak, Wynne Teel, Cissel Gott Collins, Jeanne Wang, Dionne Clemons, Nancy Rose Senich, Sharon Fawcett, Kathy Sommerkamp, Kelley Gillespie, Carolyn Peirce

INTO YOUR LIFE AND YOUR HOME. The question is – how do you find that kind of perfection? For almost four decades, smart shoppers have known about the Smithsonian Craft Show. When you’re searching for treasure, it’s not just joyous to shop the show – there’s great efficiency in the one-stop “Aladdin’s Cave” of extraordinary crafts. After all, you could… …fly across the nation to Seattle, Washington to visit the studios of master glass blower Boyd Sugiki and explore the fresh colors and clean lines of his handblown glass, and then… …take the train south to Nevada City, California, where father-and-son craftsmen Robert and Tor Erickson work largely off the grid to craft ergonomic seating and oneof-a-kind desks and tables. Then… …rent a car and drive for days to Verona, Wisconsin to run your hands across the sleek curls of wood that typify the remarkable furniture of Richard Judd and then… …trek

Or you can simply go to the National Building Museum in Washington DC (gala preview shopping night on April 22; open to the public April 23-26) to see 120 artists – a nation’s worth of extraordinary crafters – laid out for your discernment. Event organizer Kelley Gillespie says “The Smithsonian Craft Show is a juried exhibition. Hundreds of craft makers from coast to coast apply for the chance to bring their wares to the nation’s capital. While all applications are appreciated, only the best are invited to participate in the show.”

ARTICLE LAURI GROSS | PHOTOGRAPHY JACK HARTZMAN

TO SOME, ART IS PERPLEXING. To others, it’s wondrous, expensive, fleeting or beautiful. And that’s the point. With beauty firmly entrenched in the eye of the beholder, art can be anything we want. But to figure out what that is, exactly, call Debrah Dunner. An accredited personal-property appraiser with a fine-art specialty, and owner of the Potomac-based Aesthetica Art Services, LLC, Debrah helps build collections that bring clients joy and that will also appreciate in value, even Roberto Lugo The Notorious B.I.G. / bell hooks Teapot, 2016 Porcelain, china paint, gold luster 13 x 10 x 6 1/2 inches 28
