For some, home is a warm and comforting place where families come together to celebrate the good times in life and to comfort one another when faced with life’s challenges. For others, it is a refuge from the cares of the world – a personal space that reflects the owner’s interests, hopes and desires. Regardless of the definition, owning a home represents the ultimate attainment of the American dream.
However, homeownership is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Just as there are many different types of homes, there are also many types of owners.
Some buyers are so happy with their first home that they never move again. They become sentimentally attached to their dwellings, which are filled with fond memories of family and friends.
Other homeowners are not content with the status quo. They find that they have outgrown their current houses, and they are ready move up in size and features. For these buyers, there is only one option – designing and building a custom home.
Fortunately, there is an easy solution to this dilemma – Hannah Custom Homes. Founded in 2005 by Dusty Hannah, Jeff Pyle and Misty Pyle, Hannah Custom Homes
The custom home offers two tiers of exterior living space.is well known throughout Middle Tennessee for building beautiful, high-quality homes that set new standards for design and detail.
“Building a custom home is a wonderful process that enables a homeowner to curate their living space to support their family’s lifestyle,” says Misty Pyle, Hannah Custom Homes co-owner and CFO. “Our homebuilding approach results in a new house that instantly feels like home.”
Since its inception, Hannah has constructed many beautiful homes across the region. Every home is a unique dwelling that has been custom crafted to reflect the individual needs and desires of its owners.
One of the finest examples of Hannah’s custom craftsmanship is the beautiful house built for company founder Dusty Hannah. Located off of Highway 25 in scenic Cottontown, the 7,000+ sq. ft. home showcases Hannah’s eye for design and attention to construction detail. Within its spacious confines, the house features four large bedrooms, four full bathrooms, two half baths, a bonus/bunk room, a full bar and two levels of premier outdoor living spaces. Both the exterior siding and the interior foyer wall treatments are constructed out of Shou Sugi Ban wood.
“After designing and building many houses over the years, we pretty much knew what we wanted in our new home,” says Dusty. “Once we decided to build, the entire project took about eighteen months – four to six months for planning, design and preconstruction, and an additional twelve months for construction.”
Prospective homebuyers seeking a custom home have no shortage of options. Depending upon a buyer’s creativity and budget, the range of customization possibilities is endless. However, most customers focus on aesthetic upgrades, ease of use and performance. The most popular buyer requests are special trim details (aesthetics), lifestyle-oriented kitchens and laundry rooms (ease of use) and custom HVAC and water management systems (performance).
Recently, many customers have been requesting dedicated storm rooms to protect their families in the event of severe weather. Given the fact that Tennessee is now considered to be in tornado alley, the Hannah team makes sure to discuss storm room possibilities with every prospective buyer.
For families considering a custom-built home, their first call should be to Hannah Custom Homes.

BY RICK MURRAYSumner County is home to some of the most beautiful and historic sites in Middle Tennessee. Many of these properties date back to just after the founding of the county in 1786, and they have all been adorned with period authentic furnishings.
When visitors step foot on the grounds of the properties, they feel a palpable sense of history as they realize that they are walking on the same paths trod by legendary figures such as Daniel Smith, Andrew Jackson and James Winchester. Inside the homes, guests can almost hear the echoes of the past.
Most of these properties are available for free to low-cost tours on a year-round basis. However, several of them close during the winter and will not be available for guest visits again until April. These sites include Rock Castle, Cragfont and Wynnewood.
This spring, we invite Hendersonville Lifestyle readers to plan a road trip to explore the fascinating history of Sumner County as lived through the homes of its founders.

AWARD-WINNING BUILDER SHOWCASES INNOVATIONS THAT CAN MAKE ANY HOME SAFE, SECURE AND COMFORTABLE
Today’s world revolves around technology.
Every day, we all swim in an ocean of innovation and connectivity that could have scarcely been imagined just a few decades ago. From intelligent wearables to computer-controlled cars to smart homes, technology has evolved from clever gadgetry to become an essential part of our personal and business lives.
As consumers have embraced the IoT, they have increasingly been using technology to help them manage their busy lives. Many homeowners have
"At Schell Brothers, we believe that the future is now. Our HomeIQ technology is a standard feature in all of our new homes. It provides our customers with safer, more comfortable and more efficient homes that help them manage their busy lifestyles."
Kaylie Austin
already retrofitted their homes with modern smart systems. At the same time, buyers looking to purchase new homes are demanding that builders incorporate home automation technology at construction time.
Local homebuilder Schell Brothers saw this trend coming several years ago.
Since its founding in 2002, Schell Brothers has been an innovator. Its commitment to quality, technology and customer satisfaction has won it numerous accolades, including being named Pro Builder Magazines 2023 Builder of the Year.
Recently, Hendersonville Lifestyle sat down with Schell Brothers Nashville Division Sales Manager Kaylie Austin to find out more about the company’s approach to home technologies.
What is Schell Brothers’ home technology strategy?
“We developed a standard package called HomeIQ that incorporates many of the most popular technologies, including interior/exterior smart switches, keyless entry systems, video doorbells, remote garage door controls, alarms, computerized HVAC controls and USB combo outlets. All of these technologies are integrated through a central wall-mounted Amazon Alexa smart home hub.”
How do you help prospective homeowners embrace the technologies?
“Our salespeople receive extensive training in all of our home automation systems. They are able to provide buyers with real-world demonstrations of how the technologies work when they visit our model homes.”
What are the advantages of building in home automation at construction time?
“By including the systems as part of the build, we simplify the decisions that our customers have to make. They can review our standard HomeIQ package and make changes and/or additions to it if they choose, including such things as centralized vacuum systems and integrated home speakers.”

The home buying process can be complicated, filled with many critical steps that must be accomplished before buyers can take possession of their properties. From choosing the right neighborhood to arranging affordable financing to setting a closing date, each stage must be completed before the dream of home ownership can be realized.
Along with providing a safe and comfortable place to raise a family, purchasing a home is one of the most important financial decisions that many people will make in their lives. For most homeowners, their residence represents a significant percentage of their overall net worth. As a result, it is important that homeowners are fully informed about the condition of their properties before they sign their mortgage papers.
Very few buyers are well-versed about home construction and maintenance processes, particularly when purchasing their first residence. This lack of knowledge can lead to costly mistakes when evaluating potential houses.
Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem for Hendersonville area residents – Inspector Daggett.
Inspector Daggett is a professional home inspection company owned and operated by Hendersonville resident Mike Daggett. Mike has been providing residential inspection services to area realtors and home buyers since 2004, and he is affiliated with two preeminent accrediting agencies – the American Society of Home Inspectors and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors.
“When I was growing up, I was inspired by my father, who was a custom cabinet maker who built my childhood home,”
"Document everything related to your home. There is no such thing as too much information."
says Mike. “I apprenticed with him for several years, and he passed on to me a love and appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. Working with him led me to pursue a career in residential inspections so that I can help guarantee the security of purchasing wellbuilt and well-maintained homes.”
Inspector Daggett offers a variety of services for owners, including single family home inspections, multi-unit residential inspections, re-inspections (typically performed one year after a purchase) and radon inspections. Although the company does not perform commercial and industrial inspections, it can handle any time of residential dwelling.
Most assessments typically take around four hours, but the actual time can vary depending upon the home size, complexity, scope and the level of homeowner involvement in the inspection process. Once the inspection is complete, Inspector Daggett typically provides realtors and homeowners with detailed same-day reports.
Pricing varies by the size of the residence, ranging from $400 for homes less than 1,000 sq. ft. to $700 for homes up to 4,500 sq. ft. For homes 4,500 sq. ft. and larger, the company provides custom price quotes. Radon testing services range from $150 (when performed with a home inspection) to $250 when performed standalone.
Although based in Hendersonville, Inspector Daggett performs services all over Middle Tennessee.
- Mike Daggett“While our service area is Greater Nashville, but we’ll work with any realtor or homeowner to provide a personalized service quote if they are located outside of this region,” says Mike. “Honestly, any place located within the great state of Tennessee is always up for consideration, so customers can feel free to bring on their mountain vacation homes.”
When creating the company, Mike and his wife Dianna decided to take a lighthearted approach to choosing a business name.
“Mike has always been a fun-loving guy who has always been known for his ability to provide a solution to just about any problem,” says Dianna. “When we were toying around with business names, we remembered the old 1980s cartoon series ‘Inspector Gadget.’ Given its similarity to our last name Daggett, we both laughed and thought that Inspector Daggett was the way to go. It is a memorable name, and it lets our customers know that they will be working with a company that has a fun outlook on life.”
For homeowners and realtors looking to do their due diligence right, give Inspector Daggett a call.
