It's June and the Men's Issue. We celebrate the guys who are the husbands and dads in our lives! Being a man today is an exercise in patience and strength. Forces from all around buzz the air with messages that try to take bites out of men, but the iron core does not yield, bend, or break. It is God given to be a husband and father and do the work to earn the title of being a man. We listen, understand, and ultimately protect those that mean the most.
My father, Tom, passed away when he was just 49. He was a man of many accomplishments, with successful ventures in the restaurant and real estate industries. He was respected by all, but his greatest joy was his family. He loved us, his friends, sports, and the great outdoors, but his love for being a dad was unparalleled. I was only 13 when he passed, but what I remember most about him was the feeling of pride I felt when I made him proud, and the warm, comforting bear hug that could chase away any bad day.
Our next story features another amazing father, Brad Benigni, the owner of Taylor Door. Brad's journey is a testament to the power of community and resilience. After a devastating tragedy, he found strength and support from the Grosse Pointe community, his family, and friends. Guided by the lessons from his parents, he navigated the challenges of running a business and raising a family. His story is a powerful reminder of the strength that can be found in the face of adversity.
Family-owned businesses are a staple in Grosse Pointe, and Hadley is synonymous with the community. We visit Dominic Hadley from Grosse Pointe Painters to discover how he learned from his parents and their 50 years of experience to carry on the Hadley companies.
Jeff Meldrum learned the importance of building relationships from his father growing up. Entrenched in the Grosse Pointe communities, Jeff opened @ Properties Christies International Real Estate on the Hill in 2021. Cutting-edge technology and understanding your client's needs differentiate what Jeff brings to tailor each experience and maximize exposure and action.
Men and cars go hand in hand, and the automotive history of America is a core piece of Grosse Pointe. As a sponsor of the EyesOn Design at Ford House, we visited with M1 Concourse CEO Tim McGrane and explored this amazing facility. Whether racing, events, or shows, M1 Concourse connects us with the need for speed and design.
Happy Father's Day!

HOME IMPROVEMENT
An open door represents many things. An open mind and open heart, the portal to a loving home, a willingness to consider new ideas, a fresh start.
Brad Benigni is passionate about doors. He grew up in the business, learning it from the inside out, later taking on a leadership role that led to the launch of
a new business model to help customers choose the right door for their space. His dedication and passion make him beloved and admired by his staff, customers and community.
Recent events have led him to a deeper understanding of the wisdom behind another saying about doors: when one door closes in this life, another door opens.
Brad is owner and founder of DIY Door Store and runs Taylor Door Company, both based in St. Clair Shores. His parents, Tom and Rosemarie Benigni, established the Taylor Door Company in 1990 and ran it out of their home. Taylor Door Co. designs, installs and repairs custom doors
for residences, including entry doors, garage doors, patio doors, plus windows and commercial doors. Brad began working in the family business during summers in high school and college.
“I loved installing doors. I like working with my hands. It is very therapeutic for me to this day,” Benigni says. That early experience showed him he likes working with people. He got to know and care about his customers. “I saw the struggles they faced. With so many options, it is hard to know if you are making the right choice.”
Finding a solution was a top priority when Brad joined Taylor Door Co. after obtaining his Bachelor of Science from

Oakland University. He tapped into his love of photography to find a means of using digital technology to help customers visualize what a door would look like on their house.
“Customers loved it. It was not being done anywhere else at that time,” Brad says. He revamped the company’s outreach, emphasizing the internet to reach a broader audience, and brought all back-office systems online.
In 2008, one of Taylor Door’s suppliers went out of business. Brad took the opportunity to purchase all the inventory,
and The DIY Door Store was born. It was a natural progression. “Taylor Door Co. was always the place where you could find things you couldn’t find anywhere else,” Brad says, adding he learned a lot watching his parents work together. “My mom ran the day-to-day. My dad was the sales guy, afraid of nothing.”
The business has grown to 15 employees, spread among both companies. Brad is especially proud of the showroom, where clients can explore all the options. “We also stock parts and pieces. That reliability is what sets us apart from big box
stores,” he continues, which is great news for Grosse Pointers needing custom doors such as Gothics and extra-wide.
Just how much that loyalty means hit home recently, following the untimely death of Brad’s beloved wife, Rachel, who was also the devoted mother of their two young sons. Brad’s and Rachel’s families have supported Brad and the boys, both at home and in business. It hasn’t ended there. Supportive staff, clients, neighbors, and Brad’s parish church, St. Paul on the Lake, have been there at every turn to remind Brad and his sons they don’t have to do it alone. “To see the outpouring of love has been truly amazing,” Brad says. “I am convinced there is no other place I would ever want to live.”
Brad also finds strength in the examples set by his parents. “They went to work every day. My brothers and I learned a lot from that. They weren’t afraid to tackle a problem, which is a priceless lesson,” Brad says. “They showed me there is always a solution to any challenge.”
Brad sends heartfelt thanks on behalf of his entire family to everyone throughout the Grosse Pointe and St. Clair Shores communities for their love and support during this difficult time.

Jeff Meldrum is at the vanguard of changes that are taking place in residential sales, and he is inviting everyone in Grosse Pointe to consider his approach when they are ready to buy or sell.
“What it is really about is presenting each property in the best possible light.”
“In today’s world, real estate buyers have access to homes right on their phones,” Meldrum says. The future lies in high-level exposure and having the infrastructure to reach buyers wherever they are. We can deliver that.”
Meldrum is Managing Broker for the Grosse Pointe office of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate. @properties is the eighth largest real estate company in the U.S. That provides Grosse Pointers with immediate access to Christie’s digital platform, offering real-time access to a network of brokers and interested buyers and sellers around the world. The cutting-edge technology allows Meldrum and his team in Grosse Pointe to tailor their approach and provide every client with the best package for their home.
The tailored approach includes building relationships. “I need to know who you are and what’s important to you so I can customize the best package for your needs and your property,” Meldrum explains.
“The majority of clients are both buyers and sellers. When navigating the process through family and career considerations, every situation is unique.” The main goal is always maximizing sales price and tailoring the approach to each client’s needs.”
He learned that early in his career as executive director of a landscape company serving the Grosse Pointes. “I was dealing with people on a daily basis. I grew up on the east side. My wife and I are members of the Lochmoor Club. She teaches
at Brownell Middle School. Our children attend school here. We are entrenched in the community,” Meldrum says. It all combined to make for a natural transition into residential real estate sales. It also helped Jeff develop his personal brand along the way.
“My goal is to help homeowners understand their property, understand what value their property has, and make sure they are able to put themselves in the best position to sell their property.”
“There is a difference between what your home is worth and what your home is going to sell for,” Meldrum points out. “We are here to maximize that outcome.”
He provides all clients with a unique, topto-bottom perspective that helps them find value and quality throughout the buying and selling process. All homes receive the benefit of his experience, which includes top-quality photos inside and out, including drone footage and video. Once a For Sale sign goes in the ground, a postcard goes out to homeowners in the area, and the property is entered into @properties Christie’s International database.
That’s when the real work for Meldrum begins: “I spare no expense in marketing your home. There is backing from me to ensure the

property gets seen where it needs to be. The most important thing I tell my clients is that I will advertise your property the same if it is a $300,000 home or $7,000,000.” And therein lies the difference between good offers and great offers,” Meldrum says, between five showings and twenty.”
“What it really is about for me is presenting each property in its best possible light.”
Jeff’s commitment to building relationships and serving clients was instilled in him early on by his father, whose career was in sales. “I learned so much from him
about hard work, dedication and staying true to yourself,” Meldrum points out. “I have two sons, and it is something I want to instill in them.”
@properties Christie’s International Real Estate has a global and national footprint including the following locations in Michigan: Grosse Pointe Farms (100 Kercheval Avenue), Detroit, Birmingham, Ann Arbor, Rochester, Northville, Petosky and Harbor Springs.

When M1 Concourse acquired a historic site on Woodward Avenue in Pontiac in 2014 that was once home to auto manufacturing facilities, it reconnected with the land's iconic 100-plus years of automotive history. Today, the M1 Concourse, named after Michigan Highway No. 1, is a destination for car enthusiasts, young and old.
"We were originally perceived as a private racetrack with private garages, and while we still have a private garage community, we've now got a public aspect, our events," says its CEO, Tim McGrane.
The Woodward Dream Show is one such event, and the American Speed Festival is another, a multi-day festival showcasing cars from the past, present, and future.
One of the participating cars was designed by Jim Hall, a driver and race car designer who also built cars. "One was the Chaparral, and it was revolutionary," says Tim. We had the opportunity to get four of those to come to M1 in 2021 when we held the first American Speed Festival. To see those cars come around the track in formation was a special moment because they haven't put more than one car on track since about 2006."
The M1 Concourse Event Center, with indoor, open-air, and outdoor spaces, can accommodate smaller, more intimate celebrations to extremely large gatherings. "We do many events, whether it's corporate or private events, philanthropic fundraisers, and a number of others. It's a very special and unique place."
In addition to events, a race track is another rare, exciting offering in a metropolitan area. Many well-known visitors to the track and events at M1 have included Jay Leno, Tim Allen, Jimmy Fallon, and famous race car competitors.
"We had Roger Penske on track in one of his historic race cars, a Porsche RS Spyder," says Tim. "He was getting ready to go to a famous event in England, and he wanted to practice with the car to ensure he was comfortable."
Other everyday people who feel a need for speed can take a spin around a track-riding shotgun with a professional driver. "We refer to them as race speed track experience laps. When people get out of the car, they've got big grins on their faces because they've had a great time."
Those needing more time to be ready for the actual track can take an exhilarating ride on one of the many simulators.
An M1 Concourse Car Club has taken off on the 87-acre property. "We developed the M1 Concourse Car Club so that people could become a part of an M1 affinity group, and it's really taken off," he says. We also have a monthly event called Cars and Coffee. You bring the car, we bring the coffee. It's open to the public. We just ask people to register."
Tim, originally from England, where motor sports are one of the top three sporting events, has spent most of his career in different areas of the automotive and motorsports world. "I've spent a better part of the two decades in the classic car auction world, with three different companies involved with different aspects of the motor racing world. I also ran a race track and a classic car museum in California."
He moved to Michigan over three years ago specifically to fill the position at M1 and settled with his wife in Bloomfield Hills. "We're really enjoying it here."
M1's new and repeat visitors also positively impact the city of Pontiac and all of Oakland County. "We work very closely with Oakland County and city of Pontiac leaders to do what we can to recognize its automotive history."
M1's ambassador program helps support events. "There is certainly a great culture of volunteering in the Metro Detroit area; men and women come and help every time we do an event. These volunteers form great friendships."
M1 Concourse is a great place to enjoy a Saturday with fun for all ages. To learn more and see the full calendar of events, visit M1Concourse.com

"We've been in Grosse Pointe our whole lives," says Dom, who estimates that 95 percent of Hadley's business is in Grosse Pointe.
What’s in a name? Everything, if your name is Hadley and you operate a home improvement business in Grosse Pointe.
Dominic Hadley would know. He runs Grosse Pointe Painters in partnership with his father, Bill, who founded the company in 1975 and expanded it (by popular demand) to Hadley Home Improvement. That history means everything to Dominic, who grew up in the family business.
“We’ve been in Grosse Pointe our whole lives,” says Dom, who estimates that 95 percent of Hadley’s business is in Grosse Pointe. “Our customers like that we are a family-owned business. They know us and trust us. We stand behind our work.”
Dom’s leadership has been instrumental in the growth of Grosse Pointe Painters, overseeing a team of 12. Hadley Home Improvement, on the other hand, has flourished under his guidance, employing 75, including a crew of roofers. Dom’s age was never a hindrance, as he quickly expanded the team. “We treat our employees like family,” Dom says, reflecting the company’s values.
Dom grew up watching his dad and learned a lot. By the time he was in middle school, he was working alongside his mother in her business breeding hamsters for wholesale supply to pet stores. He graduated high school, attended class for a year at Macomb Community College, and decided there was nothing better than learning about business in the real world. “For me, the best way to learn is working with someone who has been doing it for 50 years, and that’s my dad.” They work closely, meeting weekly to review the business and bounce ideas off each other. Additional services and synergies are available from Hadley Real Estate, run by Dom’s brother.
It’s a winning business model for Grosse Pointe. “Everyone knows everyone here,” Dom points out. “There is always a connection. You feel like you are closer to your customer in Grosse Pointe, and your customer feels closer to you.”
