ROSEMARY PEAR MOCKTAIL Ingredients

Rosemary Simple Syrup • 1 cup cane sugar • 1 cup water • 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary Rosemary Pear Mocktail • 5 tablespoon pear juice • 1 tablespoon rosemary simple syrup • 1 teaspoon lemon or lime juice • sparkling water to taste (don’t be afraid to try different flavors like raspberry or strawberry for additional taste)

Health

Is the most important key to living a full and healthy life hiding from you? There are many factors to consider when thinking about what constitutes health. The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system.

Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure.

Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment, and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends

to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue.

However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful.

Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:

5. Speak your values out loud

1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.

2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.

3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.

4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.

There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant.

Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking.

Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit!

When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way. From there, our vibrancy shines to our loved ones, our neighbors and even strangers we see out and about. It becomes not only the best gift you can give yourself, but that of our community. In Switzerland’s Valais region, wellness and adventure are always part of the same itinerary. Morning could bring a high-alpine hike, afternoon a soak in mineral-rich springs, and evening a table set with traditional cuisine, always including delicious wine and cheese. For travelers, the best part will be finding the perfect balance between exploring the outdoors and relaxing with wellness-infused activities in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

A CAR-FREE ALPINE ADVENTURE IN ALETSCH ARENA​

An easy train ride from Zurich lands visitors in the Aletsch Arena, a high-alpine region on the south side of the Bernese Alps, home to three villages: Riederalp, Bettmeralp, and Fiescheralp. Known for its ski slopes in winter and hiking in summer, the area is entirely car-free, making walking and local buses the main modes of transportation through its quaint chalet-lined streets. ​One of the main attractions of the ski-in/ski-out area is the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 12-mile glacier is visible from several vantage points, shaping every experience in the area.

Where to Stay Located in the heart of Bettmeralp, Hotel Panorama provides no-fuss accommodations steps away from the picturesque Chapel Maria Zum Schnee. The hotel’s restaurant offers delicious regional cuisine, including raclette paired with Swiss wine. A good bottle of Pinot Noir or Gamay is also easy to come by because the Valais region of Switzerland is one of the largest wine-producing areas in the country, with vineyards dotting the steep slopes of the Rhône Valley. In addition to wine and cheese, eating cholera, a covered vegetable pie invented in the region during the cholera epidemic, is a must.

What to Do Begin at Viewpoint Moosfluh, the closest and lowest vantage point of the Aletsch Glacier. From there, trailheads lead to Villa Cassel, once the home of a British financier and now a museum focused on history and conservation. The hike passes through a thousand-year-old forest with views of both the glacier and the Matterhorn.

Walk over Goms Bridge, a nearly 1,000-foot-long suspension bridge that connects two hiking areas over the Rhône River. For a final look at the majestic glacier, take the cable car to Viewpoint Eggishorn. At nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Jungfraujoch, or the “Top of Europe,” and the most comprehensive view of the Aletsch Glacier.

​A fter miles of hiking in the Aletsch Arena, it is time to relax and recharge in the mountain village of Leukerbad. ​W here to Stay Hotel Restaurant Quellenhof Leukerbad is steps away from many of the area’s best thermal pools.

The hotel also has a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner with several regional specialties.

What to Do Since the 1500s, the area has been a well-known destination for wellness and healing due to over 65 natural hot springs that flow into the alpine village. Several public bathhouses welcome visitors year-round, including Leukerbad Therme, the largest thermal wellness resort in Europe.

The family-friendly wellness center includes ten pools and a range of hot and cold plunge options.

Walliser Alpentherme & Spa and Therme 51 also offer public access to the mineral-rich waters. ​A hike through Dala Gorge provides beautiful mountain views while traversing a 2,000-foot suspension bridge over the Dala River. Hikers can also experience a 100-foot waterfall before the forested hiking trail leads back to Leukerbad.

The village is considered one of the most traditional and beautiful alpine settings in the country.

It lacks the pretentiousness of Switzerland’s larger metropolitan areas and offers a storybook atmosphere with a friendly small-town feel. Walking through Leukerbad reveals gorgeous chalets, small shops, bakeries, and restaurants worth exploring.

Where to Eat No trip to Switzerland is complete without fondue. Dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, fondue, which translates to “melt” in French, is a national dish consisting of a blend of Gruyere and Emmental cheeses. One of the oldest family-owned restaurants in Leukerbad, Restaurant Sternen offers traditional fondue along with a variety of mix-ins and dipping options. Pair the fondue with Valais wine for a celebratory meal.

Restaurant Waldhaus is one of the most elevated restaurants in the village and is another family-run establishment offering a seasonal menu and over 70 different grappas to choose from.

HISTORY AND ALPS MEET IN MARTIGNY

​A short train ride takes visitors to one of the largest cities in the Valais region of Switzerland. The city is a crossroads between Italy and France, with a history dating back to Roman times. Visitors can tour Roman ruins, including a well-preserved amphitheater, ancient settlements, and Roman baths. ​ Where to Stay Martigny Boutique Hotel is minutes from the train station and is one of the few establishments in the city employing people with disabilities. The light and bright hotel provides a comfortable base for exploring the city.

What to Do Take the steepest funicular in the world, the Mont-Blanc Express, on a scenic ascent through the Alps. The funicular connects to a smaller train that leads to the Trient Valley on the French-Swiss border, where, at the top, a full day of activity begins. Hiking, biking, zip-lining, or traversing the Emosson Dam, which straddles France and Switzerland, are all options. The crystal clear blue waters of Emosson Lake are perfect for a picnic or a break between adventures.

Back in Martigny, Barryland, the only theme park in the world dedicated to St. Bernard dogs, offers a look at the history of the dog, bred by monks in the 17th century for alpine rescue work. The Barry Foundation, founded in 2005, continues to preserve the breed and educate visitors about it. Guests can watch the dogs train, play, and interact as they learn about their role in the region.

Roman influence remains visible across the city, including at Les Bains Publics at Hotel Borsari, where visitors can soak in cement wine barrels located in the hotel’s spa. The baths sit on the site of a former wine tank factory and offer a circuit of hot and cold pools in a historically inspired, wine-colored setting.

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a

reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start.

Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes.

Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”

Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with

cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.

6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”

Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.

7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”

Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.

Come As You Are Free Spirit Yoga is a welcoming space to reconnect with body, breath, & community Founder-instructor Sharon Funk shares how she turned her own journey of healing into Free Spirit Yoga, a welcoming movement studio designed to reconnect body, mind, and community.

When Sharon first stepped onto a yoga mat, she sought more than just physical exercise.

During one of the most challenging times of her life, the practice brought her comfort that ultimately led to a new passion. “I sought it out to strengthen my body,” said Sharon, “but what I found was that it provided so much more. It brought me strength, solace, a healthier mind, a community, and a space to be seen.”

Sharon met her business partner, Kylie, during teacher training and their connection was immediate. Despite both holding full-time jobs, they shared a commitment to creating a space where creativity, community, and wellness could thrive. Today, Kylie plays a pivotal role as part owner and studio manager.

Free Spirit Yoga is a sanctuary built on the invitation to “come as you are.” Sharon recalls a defining moment that made her realize it was time to bring her dream to life: a local space opened up in the same building as the flower shop where she often bought the “free spirit” rose. “These were the signs that said, ‘it’s time,’” she said. Reflecting on the process, Sharon added, “The ideas and brainstorming sessions with Kylie helped bring the studio into focus and made it a reality.”

Free Spirit Yoga offers a variety of classes designed to be accessible to all. From heated and non-heated sessions, traditional vinyasa-style yoga, meditation, and restorative shavasana, to Hot Power, Toning, Sculpting, and Yin/Restore classes, there’s something for every student. Sessions guided for “mature” clients provide modifications, and mat Pilates with Shannon is a favorite for many. “All you need is you and your mat!” Sharon says.

For newcomers, her advice is simple: listen to your body, open your mind to meditation, focus on the breath, and don’t worry about doing it wrong. Everyone is a beginner at some point! And oh…stay for Shavasana, it’s the best part!” She emphasizes that flexibility isn’t required: “People often say they aren’t strong or flexible enough for yoga. I don’t know anyone who is born ‘flexible enough’ for yoga.

That’s exactly why we practice.”

Opening the studio in Jackson has been both challenging and rewarding.

“The support from the community, friends, and family has been overwhelming. I’m grateful every day for the creativity and energy that Kylie brings as a partner to the studio,” Sharon says.

Looking ahead, Sharon hopes to connect the studio with schools and organizations so she can teach people of all ages the transformative power of movement — Forever Strong. She envisions the studio as “a community space where all ages, sexes, and body types feel welcome and connect with new and old friends, while building strength and resiliency in both mind and body — a weekly stop in their wellness journey.” She also wants to mentor new teachers, helping them gain experience and explore their own journeys. Reflecting on her beginnings, she laughs: “If I could go back to the very first day I stepped on a yoga mat, I would tell myself…start younger!”

What sets Free Spirit Yoga apart is its inviting atmosphere and wide range of classes. Events like Sound Baths and outdoor classes by Lake Cable create unique experiences for students. The studio also hosts family nights, book clubs, bridal parties, private sessions, and team-building activities.

More than a movement studio, Free Spirit Yoga is a haven for wellness, mindfulness, and lasting connections.

Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing.

Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet.

A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients.

You do not have to give up meat entirely, and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it.

You can choose to be a flexitarian which means you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meat but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products.

There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet!

TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY:

Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder to stick to your choice long term.

Increase consumption of plant foods you already like.A plant based diet does not mean boring. You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies.

Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots, and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste.

Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low B12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12.

A meat free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life.

A plant-based lifestyle focuses on whole, minimally processed foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, supporting overall health and the environment. Eating more plants can lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, inflammation, and certain cancers while improving gut health. Flexitarian, vegetarian, or vegan, you can choose the approach that fits your lifestyle. Start small, experiment with flavors, use the whole plant, and “eat the rainbow” to maximize nutrients.

Remember, quality matters which means fresh, wholesome foods provide the greatest benefits. Also, if you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement.

GARLIC HERB BUTTER

HERBED POPCORN

This butter is versatile and goes with just about anything.

You can use this on top of bread, popcorn, veggies, as a sandwich spread and more.

Add a little kick to your traditional popcorn by incorporating herbs in with the butter. You won’t be disappointed with this buttery and savory combination.

Ingredients:

Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature • 4 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped • 1 tablespoon herb of your choice (dill, basil or oregano are my go-to herbs.)

• 1 clove garlic, chopped • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon salt • cracked pepper to taste

Process:

Add all ingredients in a food processor (or mix by hand in a bowl). Transfer butter mixture on parchment paper or plastic wrap. Cover butter tightly and roll into a log. Place in the refrigerator until firm. Enjoy!

Process:

Add oil to the bottom of a pot and melt over medium heat.

Add popcorn kernels and place lid on top of the pot and heat over medium heat until kernels are popped, shaking pan occasionally. Melt butter in a separate dish and add seasonings.

Pour on top, and enjoy!

H E R B S A LT Herb salts are becoming so popular and can add flavor to a variety of dishes. There are endless flavor combinations, and these salts are so handy to have as a staple in the kitchen. Plus, these make great gifts for family and friends. All you need is a blender or food processor and minimal ingredients.

Ingredients:

• 1 cup salt of your choice (I prefer Himalayan pink salt, but any salt will do • 1/4- 1/2 cup parsley (add more if using fresh herbs) • 2 Tablespoons dried basil (or 1/4 cup if using fresh) • 1 tablespoon oregano • 1 tablespoon lemon zest • 1 garlic clove minced • Optional: Any additional herbs you prefer

Process:

Add fresh parsley, garlic, lemon zest and a little bit of salt to the blender or food processor. Mix for 10 seconds.

Add additional ingredients and blend again. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper and pour salt mixture on sheet and evening spread. Set in a cool oven overnight to dry. Pour salt into a container of choice and enjoy!

CHIMICHURRI Chimichurri is a condiment that can be used on endless things, and can be enjoyed as a sauce or dip. Serve over fish, chicken, vegetables or with crackers.

Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup olive oil (or flax oil for added omega 3 nutrition) • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar (or lemon juice as an alternative) • 1/2 cup-1 cup fresh parsley, chopped finely • 1/4 cup fresh basil or fresh cilantro • 3-4 cloves garlic, minced • 1 small red chilies or 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasonings • 1 teaspoon salt • pepper to taste

Process:

Chop fresh herbs finely and add to a bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mix. Chill for 1-2 hours. Enjoy!
