The Health & Wellness Edition

As we step into this new year, I’m reminded of how much fulfillment I find in the simple act of being outdoors—hiking through wooded trails, feeling the crunch of snow under my feet and breathing in the fresh air. There’s something profoundly grounding about moving through nature as it changes. The way the world around us evolves with each season reminds me that our own wellness, too, is a cycle.

Recently, my sister shared a quote that deeply resonated with me: “There is nothing in nature that blooms all year long, so don’t expect yourself to do so either.” Attributed to Simone Biles, this gentle reminder highlights that just as nature has its seasons, so do we. It’s powerful to think that even an 11-time Olympic medalist recognizes that wellness isn’t about constant growth or perfection—it’s about embracing each phase of life, from blooming to resting, with grace and intention.

This month, we’ve curated stories that celebrate wellness in its many forms. We hope this edition inspires you to embrace wellness as a vibrant and fulfilling lifestyle—one that honors its seasons.

Here’s to a year of growth and renewal—a chance to nurture not just what we do, but who we are.

Happy New Year!

THE X PAVES A SUSTAINABLE PATH TO REAL RESULTS

You’ve walked into dozens of gyms over the years, each one promising change, each one saying, “This time will be different.” You’ve tried every new routine, different diets, every app that promised it had the solution. You’ve been through that initial wave of excitement—you’ve even had some early results. But eventually, life crept in and old habits took hold...self-doubt reappeared. So, when you hear about The X, you’re skeptical, maybe even a bit exhausted by the idea of starting over again and building up a new community. The pattern is familiar and part of you wonders if lasting change is even possible.

Greeted by name, you walk inside The X. They don’t launch into a pitch or hit you with any jargon about calories and goals. Instead, they ask about you—your life, your experiences and what you’ve been through. The questions feel like an honest attempt to understand what has and hasn’t worked for you. They listen as you recount the starts and stops, the frustration and the things you’ve tried. The coach doesn’t rush to “fix” you; instead, they simply listen. For once, the journey feels rooted in something

beyond reaching a goal. It’s about understanding how you want to live—what truly matters to you and how you envision a future of strength and fulfillment.

At The X, The Difference Is Immediate

Michael Gaines, Owner and Founder of The X, brings a unique perspective, instilling his member-centered philosophy into every aspect of the gym experience. His team views the gym through the eyes of each member, tailoring programs and expectations to meet individuals where they are, both physically and mentally. The X offers programs that function like concierge services—adapting to you, rather than expecting you to adapt to them.

“Life changes and your goals may change with it. That’s natural,” Michael says. “Our programs aren’t rigid templates; they’re living, breathing plans that evolve with you. They bridge the gap between who you are today and who you want to become. Our programs are designed for your life and it should serve you at every stage.”

The X Team

GABE, COACH & IMPACT DRIVER

“THE MOST REWARDING THING IS SEEING THE EMOTION ON SOMEONE’S FACE WHEN THEY DID SOMETHING THEY THOUGHT THEY COULD NEVER DO.”

The Community

At The X, coaches connect with you on more than just your workouts—they check in about your week, your life, your wins and your struggles. There’s a sense of belonging, knowing you’re not alone in your journey. Other members may have faced similar challenges, overcome setbacks and returned even stronger. It’s an environment where everyone supports one another, a place where your goals matter to everyone around you. “We’re not just coaches here,” Michael shares, “We’re impact drivers. We’re here to walk beside you and help you reach where you want to be.”

Programs

With years in the fitness industry, Michael has seen firsthand how fitness is about so much more than reps and calories. The journey, where each person feels empowered, supported and seen is the part of fitness that keeps on giving.   Michael’s background in kinesiology and neurobiology guides his approach, making The X a place where evidence-based methods and holistic wellness intertwine. The X offers well-rounded programs, medical support, personalized nutrition and habit change—all carefully calibrated to fit each member. “This isn’t about pushing you

into some arbitrary standard of ‘fit,’ it’s about finding a sustainable path that genuinely enhances your quality of life.”

To make this vision possible, The X includes a team of health professionals; a doctor and a registered dietitian who provide expert guidance on medical weight loss and nutrition. They don’t hand you a diet plan or prescribe medication and send you on your way. Instead, The X equips you with tools, habits and an understanding of how to work with your body for lasting change. Even if medication is part of the journey, The X focuses on long-term health and lifestyle integration, so that when you come off it, you have the knowledge and habits to maintain progress independently.

“Real change happens through empathy, not just expertise,” Michael explains. He recalls clients who felt they’d hit permanent roadblocks, convinced they’d never succeed in their fitness goals. But the team at The X knows that a person’s struggles are as unique as they are. That’s why every program begins with a conversation, a real attempt to understand who you are and the obstacles you face. As Gabe, one of the lead coaches, tells members, “We’re here for you as people, first.”

Impact Beyond The Gym

The X provides results that go beyond the gym walls and into the world. Take Dan for example, a member who joined The X at the age of 70, with a vision. He wanted to get in shape for an upcoming hiking, camping and kayaking trip with his best friend. His goals were not just about hitting a weight or fitness milestone, but about building the endurance, strength and confidence to fully embrace an adventure he’d always dreamed of.

Dan put in the work, pushing himself through workouts designed specifically for the demands of his trip. His coach tailored every session to prepare him for the rigors of the outdoors—inclines, long treks and heavy gear. By the time the trip approached, Dan felt ready, excited and confident to tackle anything the adventure might bring. But just as the date neared, his friend began to doubt her own ability to meet the trip’s demands and almost backed out entirely.

Instead of giving up or altering travel plans, Dan was determined to make it happen. He kept training, growing stronger and more resilient, but now he had a new focus. He wanted to be ready to not only carry his own gear but hers as well, ensuring she could still

experience the trip. It was a testament to the depth of his commitment and to the power of personalized and flexible programming. This journey became about more than fitness; it became about friendship, loyalty and support.

When they finally set out, Dan’s strength and preparation carried them through. He was able to shoulder both his pack and hers, helping her navigate the rough terrain and sharing a memory they both would cherish, forever. A story of resilience, support and determination and a testament to the strength of friendship.

At The X, fitness isn’t just about your body composition; it’s about the life you want to live and the connections you want to deepen along the way. It’s about becoming the kind of person who can meet life’s challenges—not just with strength, but with purpose, resilience and compassion. Change that is not measured by numbers on a scale or stats on a screen, but instead measured by the moments you surprise yourself, by the strength you gain to carry those you care about and by the way you show up—not just in the gym, but in the world. A Legacy of Compassionate Care

GUIDED BY LOVE, SHEPHERD’S STAFF INHOME CARE UPLIFTS OUR COMMUNITY

We sat down with Titus and CeCe Young, owners of Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care, to learn more about their journey, mission and vision. Driven by a deep commitment to compassionate care, Titus and CeCe shared insights into what inspired them to take the helm at Shepherd’s Staff, the values they uphold and how they’re impacting families across the community.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE OVER SHEPHERD’S STAFF IN-HOME CARE, AND HOW HAS YOUR PERSONAL JOURNEY INFLUENCED THE MISSION AND VALUES OF THE COMPANY?

Titus: “For me, care has always been a part of life. I started when I was 15, taking care of my grandfather, and since then, it’s been a calling. CeCe and I met in nursing school and together we founded our own care company in the UK, partnering closely with the National Health Service. When we came to the U.S., we felt deeply that our mission was to serve here in Frederick. The name Shepherd’s Staff and the former owner Angela’s vision aligned with our own values of care, integrity and compassion. It felt like a perfect fit, allowing us to carry forward this legacy.”

SHEPHERD’S STAFF EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY. CAN YOU SHARE A STORY THAT HIGHLIGHTS HOW YOUR SERVICES HAVE POSITIVELY IMPACTED YOUR CLIENTS?

CeCe: “Our commitment to the community runs deep. We partner with local churches and nonprofits and serve veterans, some of whom have been awarded Purple Hearts. One family, after working with us, shared how they could finally focus on being ‘a daughter and son’ again instead of caregivers. Moments like these bring to life our mission of showing God’s love through care and allowing families to cherish their time with loved ones.”

HOW DOES SHEPHERD’S STAFF DIFFERENTIATE ITSELF FROM OTHER IN-HOME CARE PROVIDERS?

CeCe: “We’re not a franchise and that personal touch makes all the difference. We’re able to develop truly personalized care plans and foster long-term relationships. With four Registered Nurses on staff, including Titus and myself, we bring a level of expertise that our clients trust. And consistency is key—clients often see the same caregivers, which builds a sense of family. Plus, our mobile app helps families stay informed and engaged with realtime updates of visits.”

THE NEEDS OF SENIORS HAVE EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS. HOW HAS YOUR ORGANIZATION ADAPTED ITS SERVICES TO MEET THESE CHANGES?

Titus: “We’re continually evolving. We use AI software to better match caregivers with clients, and our app allows families to check in without needing a home visit. Expanding into Carroll County is part of this growth, as we strive to reach even more people who need our support. Our goal is to create a seamless experience that balances compassionate in-person care with the benefits of technology.”

LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR SHEPHERD’S STAFF IN-HOME CARE?

CeCe: “Our vision is to grow while remaining true to Angela’s mission. We’re building our training programs and envision creating a full-service assisted living facility that allows for continuity of care through various life stages. We want to be a resource for families, offering them peace of mind that their loved ones are in capable, caring hands.”

“Care has always been a calling for us. Shepherd’s Staff allows us to carry forward a legacy of integrity and compassion.”
Owners CeCe and Titus Young
“Our personal touch and close relationships with clients set us apart. Our mission is to show God’s love through care, allowing families to cherish their time with loved ones.”

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO FAMILIES CONSIDERING IN-HOME CARE FOR THEIR LOVED ONES?

Titus: “First, clearly understand your loved one’s needs—whether physical, emotional or situational. Look for a provider with reputable credentials and mission-driven values. Involve care professionals and consult with doctors and social workers. A reputable agency will communicate openly, provide transparency on costs and offer personalized care plans. At the end of the day, you want to feel confident that your family member is not just cared for, but truly valued.”

Accounting Firm Nurtures Financial Health

ALMACY & COMPANY HELPS CLIENTS GROW FINANCIALLY HEALTHY FOUNDATIONS

For some people, navigating their financial health can be taxing.

“It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the responsibilities that come with finances and tax preparation,” explains Terri Almacy, president of Almacy & Company CPAs, P.A.

Almacy & Company, a progressive firm of certified public accountants, has been guiding clients in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore metro areas for over 30 years. Founded in Bethesda in 1978 by John Almacy, Terri’s late husband, the firm continues to serve its clients, with some families spanning multiple generations.

PHOTOGRAPHY
“We’ve worked with some of our clients since the very beginning, now we’re even helping their children and grandchildren. It’s a legacy we’re proud of.”

ROOTS THAT RUN DEEP

“We’ve worked with some of our clients since the very beginning,” Terri says. “Now, we’re even helping their children and grandchildren. It’s a legacy we’re proud of.”

Originally from Northern Virginia, Terri discovered her love for accounting while studying at George Mason University. “I started as a business major back when women weren’t often encouraged in this field,” she shares. “I took a few accounting classes, found my calling, and switched career paths.” Terri became a Certified Public Accountant in 1982, joining Almacy & Company in 1993.

In 2000, Terri and John tied the knot and set their sights on Frederick, Maryland, eventually moving the firm to the area in 2014. “Since we lived in Frederick, moving the business closer made sense. We love being part of this community,” she says. The company set down roots in downtown Frederick at 50 Citizen’s Way in 2020. “We knew we’d love it here, parking garage and all!” Terri adds with a smile.

“The close-knit, family-driven environment at Almacy & Company extends to its staff. As for family quirks, one grandchild was even born on Tax Day!”

A FAMILY AFFAIR WITH FINANCIAL FLAIR

The close-knit, family-driven environment at Almacy & Company extends to its staff. Terri’s son, Tom Reinhardt and her son-in-law, Tom Davies, both work full-time, while her daughter, Trish, joins parttime. Deanna Nixon, a five-year veteran with the firm and Tom Davies are both CPAs, while Tom Reinhardt is working toward becoming an Enrolled Agent.

As for family quirks, one grandchild was even born on Tax Day! “It’s a fitting coincidence for our family business,” Terri laughs. This family-forward approach extends to clients, as well. “We care about our clients and strive to be responsive and accessible to them,” she says. “That’s what sets us apart.”

“Our aim is to help people build wealth over time. Just like a tree, it starts with strong roots.”

TAX TIPS FROM THE TOP

A strong advocate for year-round planning, Terri is quick to debunk the myth that tax season only happens once a year. “Most people think tax season runs from January to April 15,” she says. “But really, financial planning should be a year-long activity. This way, there’s no frantic scramble in April.”

And while some may consider online tax software, Terri encourages working with a CPA to get a personalized approach. “Penalties can add up fast if you miss something. We’re here to catch those mistakes before they become costly.”

NURTURING FINANCIAL HEALTH –AND CONFIDENCE

Almacy & Company strives to do more than just crunch numbers. “Our role goes beyond filing returns,” Terri says. “We educate clients on managing their financial health, guiding them in buying and selling businesses, navigating trusts and building confidence in their financial decisions.”

Terri’s dedication to her clients often means late nights and busy weekends, but for her, the effort is worth it. “The demand in this business is high and we take pride in being there for our clients, every step of the way.”

GROWING FINANCIAL ROOTS

Terri envisions a bright future for Almacy & Company, with growth as a central goal. The firm’s logo – a sapling with deep roots – reflects their commitment to fostering growth for clients’ financial assets. “In order to grow financially, you need a strong foundation,” Terri says. “Think of your tax return as part of that root system, supporting financial growth over time.”

With each client, Almacy & Company plants the seeds of financial stability and nurtures them to grow. “Our aim is to help people build wealth over time,” Terri says. “Just like a tree, it starts with strong roots.” AlmacyCPA.com

ERICA & ALLISON’S STORY—THE POWER OF SELFLESSNESS IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY

In a heartwarming story of friendship, faith and resilience, two Frederick women, Erica and Allison, have forever bonded over an extraordinary act of kindness—one that quite literally gave Erica the gift of life.

Originally from Nebraska, Erica has devoted her life to caring for others. After serving as a military nurse in the army, she continued her career in various RN and patient care roles, always committed to supporting those in need. However, in December of 2021, her own life took a turn and she found herself in need of care. Despite no traditional symptoms, Erica was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer. “It was a shock,” she shared. After months of aggressive treatments, including chemotherapy and surgeries, her oncologist at Johns Hopkins proposed a living donor liver transplant as her last chance for survival.

ALLISON’S DECISION: A LEAP OF FAITH

Allison, a former elementary school teacher and now professor, first met Erica through their daughters, who were classmates at Saint John Regional Catholic School. Their paths crossed at school events and birthday parties, but it wasn’t until Erica shared her diagnosis that Allison became deeply involved. “I couldn’t stop thinking about her and her family,” Allison recalled. Moved by a mother’s desire to see her children grow up, Allison took a shot in the dark and made the life-changing decision to undergo testing to become Erica’s donor.

Allison & Erica healthy and thriving

Once Allison received confirmation that she could donate, she could barely contain her excitement to tell Erica. After weeks of waiting until they could meet in person, she surprised Erica with the news just nine days before the surgery. “I remember walking up to her door,” Allison said. “I told her, ‘I wanted to bring you flowers because I heard you have a donor. By the way, it’s me!” Erica was speechless.

A LIFE TRANSFORMED

For Erica, the transplant was nothing short of miraculous. “Allison gave me the gift of life,” she said. After years of grueling treatments, Erica is now cancer-free, regaining her strength and cherishing every moment with her family. “Without a new liver, I would have likely continued chemo until my body couldn’t handle it anymore. Now, I get to build back my strength and enjoy my life again.”

Allison’s recovery afterward was challenging, but her determination and the support of family and friends helped her through. “There was a lot of sitting and napping,” she laughed, but within months, her liver fully regenerated and she was back to her active lifestyle.

A LASTING BOND

Since the donation, Erica and Allison’s relationship has deepened into an unbreakable bond. “We will always share the transplant experience,” Erica shared. Their daughters are now even closer, and the two families have become like one. “Sharing a liver with someone takes away any hesitation to talk about day-to-day parenting struggles,” Allison joked.

Both women are passionate advocates for organ donation. “If you can do something, you should. I would go back and do it again without question,” Allison shared. Erica echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the critical need for more donors. “Sixteen people die everyday waiting for an organ transplant. You can impact someone else’s life in a huge way.  Choose to be an organ donor—either through becoming a living donor or by noting so on your driver’s license.”

Their shared experience has not only cemented their bond, but has also transformed them both into ongoing advocates for kindness in its many forms. For Erica, who knows firsthand the weight of waiting and Allison, who understands the joy and fulfillment of giving and “just saying yes”, the journey has expanded their perspective on the impact of compassion. “It’s not just about being a donor; it’s about choosing to be there for others in big and small ways,” Allison explained.

Their message is simple—whether it’s donating an organ, offering a smile or helping a neighbor, we all have the power to spark kindness that can create ripples that touch countless lives. Erica and Allison’s journey is a powerful testament to how one person’s selflessness can transform another’s life. Through faith and a shared commitment to helping others, these two women have exemplified that even in the most challenging times, kindness and compassion can shape someone’s future in profound ways.

FROM HUSTLE to Authenticity

ARTICLE BY AARON VANDER MEER OF PEAK PERSPECTIVE COACHING FINDING BALANCE IN THE PURSUIT OF SUCCESS

What happens when the drive for more leaves you feeling less? When striving turns into surviving? In these moments, I have learned that authenticity can be a powerful antidote, creating space for rest, connection and the courage to admit: “I just need a break.”

Society often pressures us to chase the next achievement—to volunteer at every event, join every sports league and climb higher at work. This “hustle culture” mentality can yield extraordinary results, fueling innovation, financial success and groundbreaking ideas. It’s the drive behind professional athletes shattering records and entrepreneurs revolutionizing industries. Personally, I’ve thrived in this mindset, building a fulfilling career, starting a family, and giving back to my community. But what happens when the hustle never stops? What about when you’re trapped in a cycle of never feeling “enough” no matter how much you achieve? When you keep pushing, convinced that if you can just get over the next hurdle, it would all be worth it and that moment never arrives? At the end of the day, what is left other than a feeling of guilt or emptiness?

I was at brunch with friends a while ago and realized I didn’t have the energy to pretend everything was fine. So, when asked how I was doing, I took what felt like a huge risk and answered honestly. “I’m exhausted,” I admitted. “I just need a break.” To my surprise, my friend responded with relief and empathy, saying they felt the same. Our honesty with each other in that moment created an authentic connection that broke through the surface. We both felt seen. That moment felt profound in its simplicity, a powerful reminder that being seen and understood, even in the midst of fatigue, is not only okay—it’s essential. Since that experience, I’ve chosen to take the chance to be more authentic in my interactions, reinvigorating me in ways I never expected.

Aaron on a recent trip to Iceland

Being open about my struggles not only relieved me of the stress of pretending I was fine, but also brought me closer to others. Now, I am drawn to people who show up as their genuine selves, balancing both their hustle and their humanity. These authentic connections have become invaluable, deepening my relationships and energizing me in ways that support my growth and impact. For those who are able to take a step back and dedicate real time to self-care when exhausted, please continue to do so. But for others, that simply isn’t an option right now. The constant need for productivity and demands on my time have not slowed down. But I have learned that embracing

authenticity can be a secret weapon in sustaining the energy needed to keep going. When I’m honest about my limits, I give myself permission for rest and create space for others to step in.

When we put the hustle as the most important thing, we can lose sight of things that really matter. Admitting when I needed help created space for others to step in to lend a hand. Authenticity puts the soul back in. It creates genuine connection with other human beings. So, as we continue our journey through life and work, striving for the next achievement or accomplishment, let’s not just chase success but also create room for authenticity, vulnerability and balance.

“Authenticity puts the soul back in. Being open about my struggles not only relieved me of stress, but also brought me closer to others.”

THEVEGETA BLE REVIVAL

Let’s be honest: for many of us, eating vegetables doesn’t exactly spark joy. They’re often relegated to the “eat because you should” category, buried under cheese or forgotten on the plate altogether. But what if veggies could be a star on your table, not just a supporting act? Become a more adventurous and health-conscious eater with these practical tips and watch your love for veggies flourish.

BUT FIRST…WHY DON’T I LIKE VEGETABLES?

If you’ve ever pushed a plate of broccoli aside with a grimace, you’re not alone—and there’s science behind it.

Bitter Isn’t Always Better

Vegetables like Brussels sprouts and kale contain alkaloids, compounds that make them taste bitter to some people. These developed to protect plants from predators (including us, apparently). But with a little culinary creativity, you can turn that bitterness into bold, delicious flavor.

Rebooting Your Taste Buds to Love Veggies

Blame Your Genes

Some people, known as “supertasters,” are genetically wired to experience bitterness more intensely. Alongside your genes, taste preferences are shaped in childhood, so if veggies weren’t a regular part of your diet growing up, they might seem less appealing now. But don’t lose hope! While these may sound like excuses you could use as you brush the greens aside, taste buds are surprisingly adaptable.

WHY VEGETABLES DESERVE A SPOT ON YOUR PLATE

Vegetables are nutritional powerhouses. Here’s why they’re worth a second (or third) chance:

Nutrient-Packed: Loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that help your body thrive. Fiber-Rich: They keep digestion smooth and help you stay fuller longer.

Low-Calorie: Perfect for guilt-free snacking or second helpings.

Hydrating: Many veggies are full of water, sneaking hydration into your diet.

THE THREE C’S TO A VEGGIE REVIVAL

Challenge Your Taste Buds

Start by introducing one new vegetable at a time. You don’t need to love it immediately; the goal is to become familiar with the flavor. Studies suggest that repeated exposure can gradually shift your taste preferences. If kale doesn’t taste good the first time, try it a few more times in different ways—like sautéed, in a smoothie or mixed with other foods you enjoy.

Complement the Flavors

Pair veggies with flavors you already like. For example, if you enjoy sweet or savory foods, roast vegetables with honey, balsamic glaze or olive oil and herbs. Adding spices and sauces can help balance bitterness.

Cushion the Experience

Ease into veggies by making them a subtle addition to meals rather than the main event. Sneak zucchini into muffins, blend spinach into a smoothie, add diced peppers to your morning omelet or add some cauliflower to your mashed potatoes.

FERMENTATION NATION: TURNING SOUR INTO SWEET

Fermented vegetables are having a well-deserved moment in the spotlight and for a good reason. Classics like kimchi, sauerkraut and even pickled carrots or cucumbers bring a tangy, vibrant punch to any dish. But the benefits go beyond flavor.

When you add fermented foods to your meals, you’re introducing your palate to a whole new flavor. The tanginess can balance bitterness in vegetables, creating a sweeter, more complex taste profile.

If fermentation feels intimidating, start with pickling. Quick pickling veggies like carrots, radishes or red onions is easy and requires only a few ingredients: vinegar, water, salt and your choice of seasonings. Pickled veggies are versatile—toss them into salads, layer them on sandwiches or enjoy them as a tangy snack.

When I started adding fermented and pickled vegetables to my diet, I noticed something remarkable: vegetables that once tasted bitter or bland began to taste sweeter and more appealing. Over time, my taste buds seemed to reset, making me more adventurous and open to trying different vegetables.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR YOUR TASTE BUDS

Learning to love vegetables is a journey of discovery—one that rewards patience and curiosity. By exploring new flavors, experimenting with preparation methods and finding combinations that excite your palate, you can transform the way you eat and feel. Soon enough, you might find yourself not just tolerating vegetables, but craving the vibrant, nutrient-packed goodness your body needs to thrive.
