A Style All Your Own

Dear Reader,

I hope this letter finds you in high spirits and full of creative energy.  This month, we celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style goes beyond the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our lives.

Style is deeply personal and it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a unique form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world, and what we value, both internally and externally.  In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic preferences.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in Crystal Lake and the surrounding communities to uplift our spirits, boost productivity, and ignite creativity.

What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

Here’s to being uniquely you!

BLENDING CLASSIC AND MODERN: EMBRACING TRANSITIONAL DESIGN

Simple and Impactful Changes to Refresh Your Space

As we transition from summer to fall and head into the colder months, we’re reminded of the transformations we’ve been meaning to make to our indoor spaces before winter arrives. Many people are considering shifting from a traditional style to something more contemporary or modern, but knowing where to start can be challenging. This is where transitional design can play a vital role.

UNDERSTANDING TRANSITIONAL STYLE

With countless design styles, descriptions, and labels overwhelming the market, transitional style offers a more organic and natural approach for those of us who want to freshen up our space without it becoming a full-time job or needing a hefty budget. Transitional style is a blend of traditional and contemporary elements, combining the formal elegance of traditional design with the lightness and minimalism of modern aesthetics. The result is a space that feels both fresh and timeless.

Styled by A to Z Interiors, Crystal Lake

Samantha Cremer, an interior designer from A to Z Interiors, shares that "transitional style is what many people crave when they look to update their homes for the first time in a couple of decades. Those with bulky furniture, heavy draperies, and dark colors may find transitional style appealing as it allows for changes without having to 'burn the house down' and start again."

HOW TO INCORPORATE TRANSITIONAL STYLE INTO YOUR HOME

While big changes may feel intimidating or financially unfeasible, smaller updates can have a significant impact on the overall feel of a space. Transitional style is becoming more accessible for a variety of reasons. Samantha also shares simple ways to spruce up your style. She suggests switching out sofas for ones with slimmer arms, choosing accent chairs on a smaller scale so as not to overwhelm your space, and updating window treatments with simple, clean panels. Painting walls in lighter, more neutral tones can also help create a brighter, more open feel.

Consider incorporating a mix of materials, such as wood, glass, and metal, to add depth and interest. From a simple accessory swap to updating hardware, these changes can have a big impact. You might pair a sleek metal lamp with an existing wooden side table or choose a fabric with a subtle pattern to update your cushions and add a touch of texture without overwhelming the room.

WHAT MAKES TRANSITIONAL STYLE UNIQUE?

Niki Ryan, lead designer at TriStone Development, notes that "transitional design is unique because it bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary styles. It helps create a timeless and versatile space by blending classic charm with modern functionality, appealing to diverse tastes."

This blending of styles allows for a more gradual and personalized approach to design, where you can incorporate elements that reflect your personality and lifestyle. Whether it’s a vintage mirror that adds character or a modern piece of art that introduces a pop of color, transitional style offers the flexibility to create a home that truly feels like your own.

So, as you prepare your home for the colder months, consider embracing transitional style to refresh your space. By blending the warmth and comfort of traditional design with the clean lines and simplicity of contemporary decor, you can create a cohesive and inviting environment that feels both current and timeless. By making thoughtful updates and focusing on simple changes and balance, transitional design offers an accessible way to transform your home before the colder months bring us all indoors.

KINDRED SPIRITS

How a destined friendship blossomed into a thriving business partnership and enduring bond

Friendships take on many forms and come into our lives for different reasons—some last only for a season, while others go the distance. Sometimes, what starts as a "friendship for a reason" evolves into a lifelong bond.

“For Julia and Lauren, having a safe space to share their deepest thoughts and feelings is invaluable.”

Julia Pucci and Lauren Schubert, co-owners of Shine Salon and Dry Bar in Huntley, are certain that's the kind of connection they share. Today, they stand side by side, exuding confidence in their business and personal styles; their shared passions and principles make their friendship seem inevitable.  What may be surprising to learn is their diverse upbringings - one rooted in farm life, from Jacksonville, a town in central Illinois, and the other growing up Northwest of Chicago in North Hoffman Estates.

Julia, now a successful attorney with her own practice, grew up a farm girl, with her hands in the dirt, literally. Her father had high standards and held her to them. Always a hard worker, motivated to earn a living to support her lifestyle, she worked two jobs from the time she was 16 and continued to work to pay for her education.  She believes that foundation became the basis for how she runs her businesses today.

Lauren, a child of suburbia, was raised modestly, where resourcefulness was a way of life.  Her father was a tradesman who worked hard to support his family.  Like Julia, Lauren credits her dad for ingraining the importance of tenacity at whatever she chose to do.  She would often hold multiple jobs; nannying and waiting tables or working in an office.

Despite their varied backgrounds, both were raised with a strong work ethic, instilled by families who believed in the value of hard work and perseverance. It’s this shared foundation that makes their connection so natural and their friendship so powerful.

Although both women attended Illinois Wesleyan University and lived in sorority houses just across the street from one another, their paths never crossed. However, destiny brought them together at the ice rink while cheering on their hockey-playing sons.  As they spent more time together, it became clear that they had much in common.

From their similar college experiences to their shared desire to build a life that offered them the freedom to truly enjoy it, their connection deepened.  As the friendship grew, they began spending more time together, away from the ice rink.  Soon their families were vacationing together; hiking trips are a favorite of everyone.

When you meet this pair, their mutual adoration and respect are instantly evident.  Asked to describe their relationship, they simultaneously say “it’s the most honest and authentic friendship we've ever experienced.”  For Julia and Lauren, having a safe space to share their deepest thoughts and feelings is invaluable.

When Julia sought support for both her law practice and Shine Salon, Lauren proved to be exactly what she needed and that trust evolved into a working partnership. Together, they've forged a bond that balances the challenges of work and friendship.   For each, fulfillment comes from empowering others to feel confident in themselves, a mission deeply woven into Shine’s values. Not being cosmetologists themselves, Julia and Lauren lean into their mutual desire to learn new things and create opportunities, and have built a team with a variety of strengths and skills. They place a strong emphasis on the importance of community, recognizing that it fosters support, connection, and a sense of belonging in countless meaningful ways.

In a world where true connections are rare, the friendship between Julia and Lauren serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of having someone who truly has your back. Their bond is built on trust, authenticity, and the kind of support that only comes from a friend who sees you for who you really are. It’s a friendship that not only enriches their lives but also reminds us all to cherish those who stand by us through every twist and turn.

A JOURNEY OF ADVENTURE, FREEDOM, AND BROTHERHOOD

Motorcycles: More Than Metal and Rubber

Motorcycle riding is more than just a mode of transportation. For many, it is a passion that transforms into a lifestyle. Riding becomes a way to express individuality, a bond shared with others, and an exciting journey that brings relief from the mundane. Riders come from diverse backgrounds; their motorcycles telling a unique story, reflecting the rider's personality and style. From adventure motorcycles to road glides, the bikes are as different as the people who ride them, but the joy they bring is universal.

Ryan Frank, an avid rider, is drawn to the freedom and excitement of touring bikes like Road Glides. "They make you feel like you're in the cockpit of a small plane," Ryan says, relishing the process of customizing his bikes. From changing seats and handlebars for comfort to modifying exhausts for that authentic Harley sound,

Ryan believes in making each bike uniquely his own. "Once you get the bike to where you think you want it, you change your mind and start again," he laughs, emphasizing the never-ending process of customization.

Ryan's most cherished riding memory is a trip to Colorado with his dad and friends. "The views were incredible, and the memories will last a lifetime. The bonding between riders is indescribable," he recalls. Riding, for Ryan, has evolved into a kind of therapeutic experience now.

"It's emotional. It's freeing. It's the open roads and the brotherhood," he reflects, highlighting how riding helped him cope with personal challenges, including the loss of his mother. Ryan also talks about how he is hopeful to continue the father-son tradition with his son Grayson when he’s older.

Chris Zatek, another seasoned rider, finds his exhilaration on a 2019 BMW R1250GSA, a bike known as an "adventure motorcycle." These bikes are designed to cover all terrains, from smooth highways to challenging off-road trails. "I got into customizing bikes as a way to spend time with my dad from an early age," Chris recalls. His journey began with a dirt bike at age 7 and a street bike by 15, customizing each of the nine bikes he's owned to suit his evolving style. "All the accessories added to our bikes serve a purpose, enhancing the riding experience," he explains.

The concept of "wind therapy" resonates deeply with Chris. He describes it as a state where riding becomes second nature, allowing him to focus on the joys of the journey—the wind on his face, the scenery, and the shared moments with his dad. "Every trip brings new adventures and challenges. My favorite memories are the ones where we sit down at the end of the day, recapping and laughing about the day's events," Chris shares.

Amy Hartman, who works in the finance department at the Woodstock Harley Davidson, has spent 21 years in the motorcycle community, discovering her calling unexpectedly. "It started as an in-between job, but

what I found was a passion for motorcycles and a family that truly cares about each other," she explains. Amy began her journey at Wildfire Harley in Villa Park, where she first experienced the kindness and camaraderie of the biking community. "If I needed help, the first people to respond would be from the motorcycle community, ready to drop everything," she shares.

Four years ago, Amy decided to buy her own bike, a 2012 Harley Davidson Street Bob, stepping away from riding on the back. "Being on a motorcycle is the one place where my mind stops thinking, and as an over-thinker, I need a break!" she confesses. Her favorite rides are those out west, away from the noise, enjoying the solitude and freedom that only a motorcycle can provide.

For Chris, Ryan, Amy, and many others, motorcycles are more than metal and rubber - they represent freedom, adventure, and a sense of belonging. And above all, the universal theme of connection. Connection to those who share in the experience with them, whether that’s community or family. And whether they are navigating rugged trails, cruising open highways, or finding peace in the solitude of a ride, for them, each journey on two wheels becomes a memory worth cherishing.

Versatile Fall Fashion Trends

How one pair of must-have jeans can be styled to fit your mood and lifestyle

With summer winding down and the fall season upon us, what better time to refresh your closet with the hottest trends? A popular look this fall is wideleg, raw hem jeans. Regardless of your budget, you’re sure to find a pair that fits your wallet as well as your style. To showcase their versatility, we asked Stephanie and Molly, the mother-daughter team behind Wear Did U Get That in downtown Crystal Lake, to style these fashionable jeans, three ways.

Top Left: Pair with your favorite sneakers and cheer on your team in style. Top Right: Missing the 80s? Sweaters with stripes, zippers and colors are back! This combination can take you from day to night with a swap of shoes and accessories.   Bottom: Lace is all the rage this fall. This casual date night staple works well with booties or wedges and small clutch.

PASS the PUTTANESCA

Sharing meals with loved ones is not only timeless, but as essential to the human spirit as the quality of the food itself. For connoisseurs of cuisine, exploring new dining trends is a favorite pastime. Whether the trend is farm to table, alfresco, formally plated or casual, family or friends breaking bread together never goes out of style.

Deeply rooted in cultures across the globe, family-style dining serves up a relaxed pause any time of day the meal is enjoyed. A later lunch tends to be the biggest meal in many cultures, yet here in the states, since the 1800s, dinnertime is still held as a high priority. During WW2, the family dinner was even part of propaganda to help preserve hope, tradition, and stability in the home. This was especially valuable for young families, helping children keep a sense of predictability and routine.

When family and friends gather, the opportunity for practicing many virtues presents itself. Perhaps the original dining experience, family-style, served center-table on large platters, offers all guests at the table an opportunity to communicate and share.

STANDING THE TEST OF TIMETHE HISTORY AND VIRTUE OF DINING FAMILY STYLE

If the table is shared with kiddos, the opportunities to model and practice essential life skills, in the safe arms of a family, is sprinkled throughout this engaging, and sometimes messy meal. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends can model healthy choices and portions, lovingly guiding the littles in evolving their agency around their own nourishment. Passing the plates teaches patience and essential manners when saying please and thank you, while encouraging each member at the table to pay attention to one's own needs as well as the needs of the group, actively listen, and take turns.  It can also be a valuable time to learn the essential skill of  laughing at corny jokes, negotiating, and resolving conflict over the last meatball.

Some restaurants include this style of dining as an option over individually plated meals, and for good reason. With the evolution of our economy and culture to include gigs, side hustles, and evening classes, eating out this way offers the same relaxed vibe to our shared community beyond the traditional 9 to 5. Having a meal delivered on an especially hectic weeknight? Setting it up around a crowded table, to bring the people together with food, perhaps al fresco (outdoors in the cool air, which heightens the senses), creates a nourishing moment that’s hard to top.  The hardest part of this lovely style will be deciding who does the dishes.

Our recipe this month features briny olives and farm tomatoes, still sweet and abundant in early fall. As the season cools, this warm and comforting dish is perfect for a family gathering together.

Sweet tomato, garlic, and briny olives, create an irresistible recipe simple enough for weeknights, or a family style dinner party.
