Support & Rally O

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In this issue, you can read about the personal journey of Robin Chesler, my beloved life partner, and others in confronting and beating this dreaded affliction. For this brief treatise, I would like to take you through a man’s experience and outlook when dealing with breast cancer.

The emotional effect of a breast cancer diagnosis on any man who loves and cares for the women in his life is profound. Robin’s diagnosis was the second time in my life I faced it. Our family lost my mother to breast cancer when she was only 47. Frankly, I still carry the emotional scars and an underlying resentment from that loss. My mother was cheated out of so much of her life. This loss, however, prepared me for what we would face with Robin’s diagnosis. I was also helped by the knowledge that treatment and survival has improved significantly during the ensuing years. Still, very big questions, challenges and opportunities immediately presented themselves.

• What do I say? This may seem like a simple question, but it’s not. She has just had her life threatened. Saying it’s “gonna be okay” is certainly not enough. She needs your own admission of fear and then an honestly supportive assurance that “we are in this together.”

• Next, you darn well better mean it. The surgeries, follow-up medication, chemo and/or radiation if necessary, debilitate your woman physically and emotionally. She may also be afraid that you may love her less if she survives but carries the wounds and scars from the experience.

• Bonding with her survivor sisters in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk has been a very uplifting experience for Robin. She raised more than $2,500 in 2015 and as I write this letter is well on her way to raising even more in 2016. I walked with her team and was bursting with pride when she went up on the stage at last year’s event flashing her incredible smile.

• Men are more likely to suppress emotions and not share their concerns with others. Women, by and large, are the opposite. They are far better for it. Encouraging and not resenting her need to pour her heart out to others is very important. Be by her side when she wants you there and turn her loose when she needs that too.

BEAT NG BREAST CANCER LOCAL WOMEN THRIVERS SHARE THEIR STORIES ARTICLE TRACY MARCYNZSYN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

18

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | October 2016

cancer diagnosis strikes fear in the hearts of so many every year. Statistics say 1 in 8 women may be diagnosed with breast cancer sometime in their life. The good news is early detection and advances in treatment have lowered breast cancer deaths, numbering about 1 in 37, and more than 3.1 million breast cancer survivors are alive today in the United States. You can beat breast cancer. Two local women share their stories here to prove it. Sabine Anderson of Moorpark has been cancer free for almost three years. “I’m still working on my fifth year,” says Sabine. “Almost three years in, there is no evidence of disease, but I have two more years to go to be deemed cancer free…more than halfway there!” Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, Sabine, who has no family history of breast cancer, was overcome with fear and disbelief.

“I truly did not think this could happen to me,” she recalls. “I had just lost a very dear friend to breast cancer the year before—she was the picture of health and vitality and this illness took her life. I feared that I had the same fate.” After the initial shock, however, Sabine gained courage and determination to beat the diagnosis, with support from her husband— who went to all of her appointments—and an “amazing” optimistic surgeon. “More than 87% of women SURVIVE breast cancer,” Sabine recalls her surgeon telling her at the first appointment. “Her one simple and clear statement shifted how I would look at my disease and empowered me to fight and kick cancer’s butt. The odds were in my favor,” says Sabine, who made the decision to keep her anxiety in check by taking things one step at a time rather than spend time worrying about what “may” happen. During an intense five-month treatment, Sabine took daily walks and got plenty of rest. She encourages women diagnosed with breast cancer to be gentle with themselves and lean on their support systems. “Stay positive. Ask for help from family and friends. Rest your body and your mind

and stay well-nourished, exercise a bit,” she says. Sabine also cautions women about the source of their research and information.

Sabine Anderson “Remember that every person is different and so is their illness. Try not to jump down the rabbit hole that is the internet chat room and forums… that can suck you into a very scary place,” she says. “Instead, talk to your doctors, ask questions and research reputable websites like the American Cancer Society.” Today, Sabine volunteers with the American Cancer Society, helping to raise awareness about the importance of annual checkups and screenings. As vice president of a supplement company, wife, mother, stepmother and grandmother, Sabine thoroughly enjoys life, making it a point to avoid stress and negativity. “I am much more conscious of stress and negativity around me and do my best to steer clear and make a change in approach, both with personal and career matters. Life is too short not to enjoy it,” she says, adding, “And it’s okay to say ‘No’ if you want to!” Emphasizing the importance of education and regular doctor visits, Sabine reminds women to practice self-care. “Take care of your body; we only have one!” she says. “Make your annual checkups and self-checks a priority and teach your children to do the same. Education and early CONTINUED > detection are essential.”

Robin Chesler

ROBIN’S STORY - CANCER FREE SINCE DECEMBER 2014, ROBIN CHESLER OF WESTLAKE VILLAGE SAYS SHE IS IN THE BEST SHAPE SHE’S EVER BEEN.

“I’m much more conscious of everything that goes on in my body,” says Robin, co-publisher of Conejo Valley Lifestyle Magazine. “More in tune and also in better shape physically and emotionally than I have ever been,” she adds. Diagnosed with zero stage in situ breast cancer in 2014, Robin underwent two surgeries and 38 radiation sessions. Family and friends’ support were invaluable in helping her cope with the treatment. “Unwavering support from Ben, my long-term domestic partner, support 20

from my family and friends and special support from my yoga community,” says Robin, got her through the ordeal, as did talking with other women who have had breast cancer treatment. Reaching out to others is extremely helpful, says Robin. “Talk about it, share your experience and knowledge,” advises Robin. “Be optimistic and never lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel.” The fact that Robin diligently scheduled regular mammograms made it possible for her doctor to spot the breast cancer at an early stage, when it is most easily treated. When she was initially diagnosed, Robin was overcome with emotion. “I remembered the film, ‘First You Cry,’ and I did… as often as I had to, usually in the shower, which is my favorite place to cry,” she recalls. “Then I prepared myself to confront it and beat it. I also spent many hours online doing my own research on breast cancer.” Grateful for early detection, excellent medical care and incredible family support, Robin cherishes each new day. “Each day is precious and I try to make the most out of every day,” she says, noting

that her experience with breast cancer has given her a new perspective. “I have a realistic view of my own mortality,” as a result of having had breast cancer, says the long-term domestic partner, mother of two, grandmother of four, child of 90-year-old parents, and sister of two brothers. “You can choose to be happy and not dwell on the negative; try not to be the Queen of the ‘What If ’s,’” she laughs. Today, Robin is healthy and active in helping to promote awareness about the importance of early detection and breast cancer screenings. On September 24, Robin joined her Making Strides Against Breast Cancer sisters in their annual fundraiser and walk. In 2015, her team and their donors raised over $2,500, and they set out, successfully, to beat that figure in 2016. “This inspirational experience of sisterhood and teamwork for an important cause is a wonderful example of women coming together, not only in raising donations, but in bringing our entire Conejo Valley community together to help finish the fight and find a cure for breast cancer!” says Robin.

The American Cancer Society offers free breast cancer screening reminders at Cancer.org.

T

he Cabrillo Music Theatre’s newly relaunched 2016-2017 season opens with the revolutionary Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical “Evita,” produced for the first time by the local nonprofit theatre company. Playing Oct. 14-23, “Evita” tells the story of Argentina's controversial First Lady through a dynamic score of songs, including “Buenos Aries,” “High Flying, Adored,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall,” and the famous “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina.” This incredible seven Tony Awardwinning musical is not the only exciting award-winning first for Cabrillo Music Theatre this season. The talented and passionate Will North joins Cabrillo Music Theatre as its Managing Director following the recent company relaunch, which also included new staff and board leadership and a relaunched 2016-2017 season of shows. "The Little Mermaid" delighted audiences last summer.

For membership information, please call the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Box Office at 805.449.2787. Group sales of 10 or more, please call 805.497.8613. The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza is located at 2100 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks 24

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | October 2016

In his new role as Managing Director, North brings 20 years of experience gained as an actor-director involved in all aspects of theatre production to Cabrillo Music Theatre. A long-time member of the Cabrillo Family, North received plenty of support from Cabrillo Music Theatre's newly-expanded Board of Directors. New members Iona Blackwell, James Engel, Courtney Herring, Paige Loter, Alexis Peraino and Neil Ticktin join existing Board Chair Bart Leininger, Vice-Chair Ray Mastrovito, Secretary Cindy Murray and Treasurer Peter Tompkins, as well as Peter Mogg and Paul Panico. Artistic Director Lewis Wilkenfeld steps down after 10 years in the position, taking a role on the Executive Advisory Board. "I am very excited about Cabrillo's future prospects," says Leininger, Chairman of Cabrillo Music Theatre's Board of Directors. "Over the last few months, we have created new energy within Cabrillo. We have doubled the size of our Board with individuals with new ideas and perspective and have hired Will North, our new Managing Director, who shares our core beliefs within Cabrillo," he adds. "Cabrillo Music Theatre will continue to produce top quality shows, and expand its community outreach program, which I believe is second to none." An award-winning director (“Oklahoma,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Closer Than Ever,” “Guys And Dolls,” “No Exit”), North began his career as a performer, playing more than 100 roles on stages from New York City to Los Angeles, including the Cinderella Castle Stage at Disney World and the Celebrity Cruise ship Galaxy. With an MFA in Acting Pedagogy from the University of Alabama and a BFA in Musical Theatre from Jacksonville University, North has also performed in concert with Alexis Gershwin at Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, and for several years as the male entertainer for the Miss Mississippi Pageant, in addition to appearing with several symphonies.

His extensive background as a technical director includes six years as the resident technical director/production manager of Marymount Los Angeles. North also worked in the business side of entertainment for the William Morris Agency, where he was involved in producing the Miss America Live telecast and reality show, the Duke of Edinburgh Award national ceremonies, and managing events for recording artist Mary Haskell. Sharing Leininger's enthusiasm for Cabrillo Music Theatre’s season of firsts, North is optimistic as he looks forward. "Potential. This is the first word that comes to mind when I survey the talented artists and technicians, the hard-working, committed board members and staff, the supportive and enthusiastic community, and the beautiful Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza," he says. "We begin this journey with a spectacular '16-'17 season, starting with the winner of seven Tony awards, ‘Evita,’ which Cabrillo has never produced, continuing with ‘Sister Act’ based on the hilarious 1992 comedy, and concluding with the favorite of kids and adults everywhere, we will fly off to Neverland next summer in ‘Peter Pan.’" CABRILLO MUSIC THEATRE’S 2016-2017 SEASON

his year, thanks to the National Charity League, Inc., (NCL) Conejo Valley Chapter, you can get a jump on your holiday shopping while contributing to a good cause. The NCL Day of Giving holiday shopping event takes place Thursday, Oct. 13 at the Agoura Hills Recreation and Event Center, 29900 Ladyface Court in Agoura Hills, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Day of Giving event features more than 20 chic boutique vendors offering a variety of items sure to delight everyone on your list. A popular food truck will also be onsite to nourish hungry shoppers. Funds from this event are used to support scholarships for local young women graduating from high school, as well as NCL charities. “Day of Giving is our Chapter’s biggest annual fundraiser, with proceeds enabling us to provide college scholarships to girls in our community who participate in community service but who are not members of our organization,” says Chapter President Kerry Rider. “We are proud to say that we support each of our local Conejo Valley high schools and are able to reward a diverse group of girls with these scholarships each year.” In addition to the annual high school scholarships, the National Charity League, Inc. Conejo Valley Chapter serves 23 local philanthropies, including the Boys and Girls Club, Cancer Support Community, Casa Pacifica and Many Mansions, Inc. Founded in 1970 with 15 Patronesses (mothers) and 16 Ticktockers (daughters), NCL’s Conejo Valley Chapter is part of the organization’s 200+ regional chapters nationwide. With the mission to “foster motherdaughter relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences,” the National Charity League, Inc. comprises mothers and daughters (in Grades 7-12) working together to serve the community. Conejo Valley Chapter’s Patronesses and Ticktockers spend over 10,000 hours serving the local community each year. Along with its annual Day of Giving fundraiser, the Conejo Valley Chapter raises charitable funds through owning and operating the Fibber McGee’s Thrift Store staffed by volunteers from the chapter in Thousand Oaks. The nonprofit organization’s purpose is to foster a sense of community responsibility in the girls as well as to strengthen the motherdaughter relationship through participation in philanthropy, leadership activities and cultural events. ilver Star Mercedes-Benz can be seen prominently as you drive by Thousand Oaks Auto Mall on the 101. Conejo Valley Lifestyle got the opportunity to take a look inside the dealership. Silver Star Mercedes-Benz was founded in 1983 by Mr. John Edward Anderson, after whom the UCLA Anderson School of Management is named. By applying his trademark brand of high ethics and business acumen, Anderson and his family subsequently grew the cornerstone Mercedes-Benz dealership into a 10-dealership network (MercedesBenz, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Acura, Lexus, Honda, Buick/GMC, Jaguar and Range Rover), in the highly regarded Thousand Oaks Auto Mall. “The Mercedes-Benz brand has always sold itself,” said Scott Stanley, General Manager of Silver Star A.G. since 2011. “It’s always been up to us to make sure the service we deliver our customers is up to the standards they expect from the brand. While we’ll never stop working to improve, we’ve come a long way.” Scott, whose glass office is located in the lower front corner of the dealership, has an open door to all. Scott sees his primary job as a lifelong student dedicated to carrying the vision of John Anderson into the future by surrounding himself with a team of top management and staff who will then deliver superior service to the customer. That kind of inspiration has resulted in a team of employees who are dedicated to working together. This results in cooperation between employees that manifests itself in the kind of longevity any business would strive for. For example, Master Certified Service Advisor Greg Stryker has been with the dealership for more than 26 years. Greg’s empathetic and familial banter with his clients makes dealing with MercedesBenz service issues almost a pleasure. The dealership is committed to getting “10 out of 10” on its customer ratings for every interaction. Personal relationships that can only come through employee teamwork and longevity are the secret sauce behind such results. Ben Criscuolo, the newest member of the Silver Star team, came on board as the Service Director. He brings more than 20 years of experience in the service segment of the automotive industry. During his tenure at other Mercedes-Benz dealerships, he created a culture of Technicians and Service Advisors that have received no 28

less than 25 Service Laureate Awards, portraying the highest levels of excellence Silver Star customers can expect. “When I met Scott Stanley and the management team at Silver Star, I knew there was a home for me here,” says Ben. "The dealership was already committed to delivering world-class service and challenged me to take it further.” The Mercedes-Benz certified designation at Silver Star MercedesBenz is hard earned but often taken for granted. It means that the service technician, salesperson and/or manager went through rigorous training for up to five years to meet standards designed to ensure consistency and quality for the brand. It means the individual possesses the superior training and knowledge required to deliver on the Mercedes-Benz promise, “The best or nothing.” Silver Star’s commitment to service and maintenance of its customers' vehicles includes employing more than 17 certified technicians with more than 200 years of combined experience. No matter what Mercedes vehicle you drive, classic to contemporary, sport coupe to sedan, SUV or the latest Sprinter selection of commercial vehicles, when you take your car to the Certified Service Center at Silver Star, you can be sure that all the mechanics are factory-trained and well versed in the most cutting-edge auto repair methods and are Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Certified. With this kind of training, you’ll never have to worry that your mechanic doesn’t know your vehicle. You can feel assured that you’re receiving the best possible service. While waiting for your own Certified Service experience, which can often be done through Silver Star’s Premier Express Service program without an appointment, Saturdays included, you can enjoy a great barista machine and “coffee up,” read and relax in a nicely appointed lounge. Silver Star Mercedes-Benz is also well equipped to deal with services that take longer. There are more than 120 fresh loaner cars that are later rotated out for sale at excellent discounts. Give the Silver Star Service team the opportunity to earn your “10 out of 10” rating. Schedule your Mercedes-Benz service online at SilverStarMbz.com/service or call 805.371.5435. Silver Star A.G. is located at 3905 Auto Mall Drive in Thousand Oaks.

24-year-old, Jose, was struck with a blinding headache — the worst pain he had ever experienced. Jose was brought to a local hospital and was subsequently transferred to Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center for a higher level of care. Jose was in a state of coma upon arrival, where doctors discovered a hemorrhage in his brain stemming from an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), a jumble of abnormally formed blood vessels. This rare condition required a two step treatment — inserting a catheter into a blood vessel in the groin and threading it up to the AVM to block off blood flow. Next, neurosurgeons

performed microsurgery aided by the magnification provided by operative microscopes. Advanced technology, expertise, and the precision of our neurosurgeons resulted in the successful removal of Jose’s AVM without disturbing surrounding brain tissue and causing irreperable damage. The swift intervention and specialized care provided by Los Robles Hospital’s neurointerventionists, neurosurgeons, critical care doctors, and staff, enabled Jose to return to his life as a college student. Jose now sees a world full of color and light.

Cycling Tribute Fuels Community Spirit & Support Mike Nosco Memorial Bicycle Ride ARTICLE KEN PHILLIPS | PHOTOGRAPHY BRIAN BLACK HODES

F

or firefighter Jack Nosco, November 3 will forever burn in his memory. On that fateful day in 2004, his beloved younger brother Mike tragically died in a terrible car accident. Jack was devastated. On each anniversary of Mike’s death, Jack would become despondent. He couldn’t shake the feeling of despair. Then, in 2008, he made a conscious effort to turn things around. He determined that November 3 should not be about his brother’s loss, but about honoring and celebrating Mike’s life. This was the genesis of the Mike Nosco Memorial Bicycle Ride, the number one charity ride in the tri-counties. As a firefighter for the past 33 years, Captain Jack Nosco, who leads his crew out of the Thousand Oaks Station #34, has always been passionate about helping others. He has been involved with youth programs and has coached numerous sports teams in the area. In his own right, he’s a high energy

individual who loves life and cycling, which he often did with his brother Mike. A TRIBUTE

It only seemed natural to use cycling as a vehicle to honor his brother and make a positive contribution to the community. At the time, one of Jack’s friends and fellow fireman needed help with medical bills for his 13-year-old son’s battle with bone cancer called Osteosarcoma. Jack saw an opportunity to raise funds through a bike ride, so he asked a handful of friends to join him and each kicked in $100. What began as a leisurely bike ride to memorialize Mike’s passing and raise money for a friend has turned into a mega event. One-hundred percent of the funds raised through the November 3 ride are earmarked to provide financial support to those in need in the community. Early on, Jack dreamed

that the event could eventually raise a million dollars. He’s almost there, but the race is far from over. Jack’s enthusiasm and drive got the ball rolling, but, as they say, it takes a village. With his wife, Teri, their three children and hundreds of volunteers, countless hours have gone into making the Mike Nosco Memorial Bicycle Ride one of a kind. In the past eight years, the bike ride has grown significantly. “There has been an overwhelming outpouring of generosity and emotional support from our community, making the ride very special to all who participate—riders, volunteers, sponsors, business partners, and those who just come out to be a part of the celebration,” says Jack. “My brother was a very caring and generous person and he would be incredibly proud of what this ride has become and what CONTINUED > it means to this community.” October 2016 | Conejo Valley Lifestyle

THE RIDE

The highly anticipated grueling, 80-mile, two-wheeled ride is attracting up to 800 participants and thousands of fans from around the world. But, even more than the funds it raises, the inspirational charity ride brings the community together to recognize and cherish one another. For those new to the event, the route takes off from and ends at Dos Vientos Community Center in Newbury Park. The trek climbs through Deer Creek, Mulholland and Latigo Canyon. Jack notes that the ride will strain the muscles and may even be painful, but “When we re-unite back at the park, we can stand proud of our accomplishments and of the fact we are all out there making a difference in the lives of others! I encourage everyone to register for the ride and make an optional donation. If we all donate a minimum of $100, I am sure we can help families in our community in ways they never could have imagined.” According to Ramona Lennehan, vice president of operations for the Michael P. Nosco Foundation, Inc., only about 2% of their in-kind and monetary donations come from non-cyclists, and all donors ride. With a donation, riders receive a commemorative t-shirt, swag bag, water 32

bottle, post-ride meal and the opportunity to bid on exclusive items given especially to the event from supporters, sponsors and local companies. GET INVOLVED

Registration for the ride itself is open on the website, where event updates and other information may also be found. For individuals who want to volunteer, Ramona suggests going to the organization’s website MikeNosco.com to sign up. “All of the roles are on the website and we usually have a total of 120 volunteers the day of the event,” says Ramona. “The ride is an amazing experience and participation in all forms is something you will never forget.” “The 501(c)3 Michael P. Nosco Foundation, Inc., for which I am president and CEO, was established to provide financial assistance to families and/or individuals in need,” says Jack. “Unfortunately, many families in our local communities cannot afford to pay the medical expenses accumulated by patients with grievous illnesses that are not covered by insurance. “It is our goal to allow families to reach their full potential in providing the utmost support in the recovery of each recipient. To help them, we offer financial assistance to

those who have qualified. Since 2009, more than $500,000 of financial assistance has been awarded to recipients.” General eligibility requirements for assistance include being a resident of the tri-county area, suffering financial hardship due to a major illness, providing one or more volunteer(s) for the Mike Nosco Memorial Bicycle Ride, having legal resident of the United States status, and submitting a completed application. “I am blessed and fortunate. There is no better place in the world than the Conejo Valley. It’s Paradise. It’s safe and beautiful,” says Jack. “People show up for our event, no matter what day of the week November 3 falls on each year. The community is unbelievable and it’s important to help make it better, emotionally, spiritually, and through our generosity and compassion. “I’ve been a public servant more than half of my life and I’ve loved every minute of it. Being community involved and continuing my brother’s legacy go hand-in-hand. I wouldn’t have it any other way and I know Mike wouldn’t either.” For more information and to donate or volunteer, contact Ramona Lennehan at 805.418.0382 or visit MikeNosco.com.

CONEJO VALLEY COMMUNITY

STEPS OUT

TO END BREAST CANCER ARTICLE PROVIDED 34

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | October 2016

// HOW DONATIONS SAVE LIVES The American Cancer Society has been saving lives for more than a century. Every day, 500 lives that would have otherwise been lost to cancer are saved. None of it would be possible without the generosity of donors like you. Your dollars contribute to our efforts to help people who are fighting breast cancer in every community, while working to free the world from the pain and suffering of breast cancer tomorrow. The progress we're making because of the passion of Making Strides supporters is remarkable. And we’ve only just begun. So, how exactly do the breast cancer donations you bring in help save lives?

// PROMOTING PREVENTION AND EARLY DETECTION We help people understand which screening tests they need and the steps they can take to help protect themselves from breast cancer by developing prevention and early detection guidelines that are the industry standard.

// SUPPORTING PATIENTS IN THEIR RECOVERY We provide free information and support when and where people need it. If your friend is losing her hair because of chemotherapy, your mother needs a ride to treatment, or a loved one needs a place to stay while getting treatment away from home, we have trained, empathetic people waiting and willing to help, and programs to meet most needs.

// PURSUING LIFESAVING TREATMENTS The American Cancer Society invests more in breast cancer research than any other cancer type. Society-funded research has led to the development of potentially lifesaving breast cancer drugs such as tamoxifen and Herceptin, as well as the discovery of genes linked to breast cancer (e.g., BRCA1). We are currently funding more than $74 million in breast cancer research through 185 research and training grants. These grants are awarded in multiple areas relevant to the disease, including genetics, etiology, diagnostics (imaging and biomarkers), drug development and preclinical, clinical, and epidemiological studies in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and quality of life.

// FIGHTING BACK The American Cancer Society empowers those affected by cancer through legislative means. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network℠ (ACS CAN) the Society’s nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, works with legislators to make cancer a national priority and rally communities worldwide in a common cause. ACS CAN gives ordinary

undreds of community members took part in “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” during the recent walk to support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to end breast cancer. The largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks unite communities with a shared determination to help free the world from the pain and suffering of breast cancer. Passionate walk participants raise critical funds that enable the American Cancer Society to fund innovative research, provide free information and support to anyone touched by breast cancer, and help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive, inspirational event that raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. Since 1993, more than 12 million supporters have raised more than $750 million nationwide. Last year, 600 walkers in East Ventura County helped to raise more than $43,000. And even more walkers turned out for this year’s event. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 37. Breast cancer death rates have been going down. This is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now there are more than 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. When breast cancer is found early, it can be easier to treat. If you are 40 or older, talk to your doctor about the screening plan that’s best for you and report any breast changes right away. Sign up for our breast cancer screening reminder and we’ll remind you to receive your screening; recommended screenings are based on our latest early detection guidelines. “As we join with others in the Making Strides walk, we move one step closer to a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer,” said Monica Murrietta Senior Community Manager. “From research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery, we provide support to everyone impacted by breast cancer.” The Thousand Oaks Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk took place in September at the Thousand Oaks Civic Center Plaza Park.

NORTH RANCH CHEF’S

Love of Food ROOTED IN CHILDHOOD

ood has always been a big part of Karl Holst’s life as a fifth-generation Ventura County resident whose

family first moved to the area to farm in the 1800s. Karl fondly recalls family cooking nights during his childhood, when his mother assigned cooking duties to each member of the family. “It was something that was so enjoyable, and I just stuck with it,” says Karl, who today serves as the head chef at the exclusive North Ranch Country Club in Thousand Oaks. “My parents encouraged me to cook at a young age. They loved great food, eating at great restaurants, and they had a passion for cooking at home,” says Karl, who went on to pursue his love of food in college, studying Culinary Arts at Santa Barbara City College and traveling extensively to

learn about various cuisines throughout the world. A professional chef for more than 27 years now, Karl’s resume includes time at Birnam Wood Golf Club, Spanish Hills Country Club, Topa Tower Club and several restaurants in Ventura County. Renowned for his incredible food and wine pairing dinners, Karl says his menus are inspired by influences near and far. “Definitely my travels through four continents learning the food ways in so many countries,” and local farmers markets and wines play a part in his culinary creations. “Farmers markets always inspire me to ask questions and taste foods seasonally. Tasting wines also influences my menus tremendously,” says Karl. “I get a lot of ideas from designing wine dinners, tasting wine and creating the perfect pairings.” His specialties usually include fresh locally grown produce. “Talking with my farmers about what is coming into season also inspires my menus. Often, just the weekly farmer's pick list can sound so delicious—

peaches, basil, tomatoes—that's a pick list but also the beginning of a deli-

cious salad or chutney to top fresh caught fish,” says Karl, who thoroughly enjoys whipping up new dishes. “It's always fun to make something new. Lately, I've enjoyed making new recipes using my smoker, including maple smoked pecans—they are so addictive!”

While Karl says his favorite food is Pho, his wife, Rachel, says, “only

half-jokingly that she married me for my smoked brisket and fried chicken,” Karl says. When he’s not in the kitchen, Karl spends time with Rachel (also a great chef!) and their greyhound dogs, Bean and Boona. Karl also spends considerable time riding his bike. 38

ack to school is always an exciting time for students making new friends, meeting new teachers and developing new interests. With so many benefits to be gained from afterschool activities, now is the perfect time to try new activities to have fun and build confidence. As dance educators, we have a strong passion for dance but are even more focused on helping to raise talented, creative and generous human beings. Dance teaches students valuable life skills while they’re having tons of fun. Dancers learn the value of teamwork, respect and responsibility through working together as a class. They learn to support one another, pick each other up and do their part for the success of the group. They understand that their performance in class and on stage affects the whole team. They embrace that responsibility and rise to the occasion. It’s a beautiful thing to watch when a child of any age really brings their 100% best for themselves but also for their class or teammates. It’s one of the most rewarding experiences as a teacher. "My friends at the studio are like family,” says Olivia Schroeder, a student at Newbury Park High School.

Dancers gain confidence and learn to be courageous. Through dance, students continuously learn new skills and techniques. Naturally, children who are in dance classes are more coordinated and less inhibited physically. Typically they become more comfortable speaking in public and addressing groups and tend to have more courage presenting new ideas. Dance is very expressive. If students are inspired and creativity is encouraged, they become more confident in themselves and their ideas. child to pursue something like dance, they must carve out time that will be dedicated to learning, practicing and executing, or in our case, performing! On any given day at Thrive Dance Center, you will see kids of all ages utilizing our homework counter and student room for homework. Balancing school with any outside activity requires focus, practice, organization and dedication. This type of behavior pays off immensely in a college or job setting. “I danced about 15 hours per week, got all A’s in AP classes at school and I am going into Bio Technology research at UCSB,” says UCSB freshman Olivia Simon. “When I dance, I feel free. I just had to figure out how to make it all work. I wouldn’t be as successful in school if I didn’t have dance as an outlet,” she adds. Dance is a unique art form where your body is the instrument and the physical benefits are numerous: balance, flexibility, stamina and coordination, physical exercise and stress relief. “We sweat, work hard and have a great time,” says Justin Epstein, 19, a USC Dance major. “When I’m dancing, I leave the outside world behind. It’s just fun and awesome.” Physical activity is imperative for the well-being of children. Whether hip hop, tap, ballet or break dancing, you are moving, expressing, working out and fully exercising your body, mind and soul. And dance is not just for kids. Thrive Dance Center offers adult classes on a weekly basis. Dance is a lifetime sport—it’s ageless. At Thrive, some of our dancers are with us a few years, while others are with us their entire childhood. Many of our dancers earn college scholarships through dance and go on to dance professionally, eventually becoming teachers/choreographers. Many of our dancers go on to pursue law, nursing, and teaching. We just feel fortunate to play a part in their development and to share our passion for dance. We are grateful for our local Thrive Dance Center family and always look forward to each dance season. We fully embrace the opportunity to serve our community through dance and outreach programs. We hope you find a place for your kids to grow, learn and Thrive. Register online at ThriveDanceCenter.com.

GET THE FACTS ABOUT CANCER PREVENTION ARTICLE SHARON NORLING, MD

I

t is an unfortunate fact that almost all modern medicine is focused on treating, rather than preventing, cancer. In 2016, the National Cancer Institute’s budget increased $260.5 million from fiscal year 2015 to total $5.21 billion. And government agencies like NIH Institutes and Centers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Department of Defense also fund cancer research in some capacity, in addition to the substantial amounts of money spent on cancer-related research by state and local governments, volunteer organizations, private institutions and corporations. In spite of the billions spent each year on cancer research, the causes and the cures are still lacking. The key is to practice prevention. The fact is, most types of cancer are almost entirely preventable. Approximately, 10% of cancer cases can be attributed to inherited genetic factors. Genes are like light switches that can be turned on and off, and are highly dependent on lifestyle. Some 90-95% of cancers are caused by poor lifestyle and environmental impacts. Tobacco alone accounts for 25-30% of cancer deaths, diets for 30-35%, infections for 15-20% and being overweight or obese 4-20% of cancer deaths. Now is the time to live your best life. Seriously consider the following to help decrease your risk of cancer:

CHEMICAL 1,4-dioxane Acrylamide Ethylene oxide

AVOID TOXINS

Knowledge is power. Learn how to avoid the nasty chemicals in personal care products (see the sidebar for a list of some common chemicals). Even more appalling than the bad ingredients is the amount of chemicals women apply to their skin every year. “Women who use makeup daily absorb on average 5 pounds each year,” according to the website BioEthiqueOrganic.com. Your skin is not only your largest organ—it’s also the thinnest, with just one-tenth of an inch separating you from all sorts of toxins. And skin is highly permeable, allowing products applied to your skin access to your bloodstream (and the rest of your body). A good rule of thumb is not to put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t eat. GET TESTED

Another key to cancer prevention is specialized testing that can determine the cause of inflammation. Inflammation either initiates or exacerbates all major illnesses, including cancer. If you want to prevent cancer, have your stool tested. As 80% of your immune system is located in your gastrointestinal tract, if you have symptoms of irritable bowel disease, constipation, diarrhea, bloating or indigestion, you probably have inflammation. Specific testing can determine if you have an overgrowth of bacteria in the stomach,

parasites, infection or yeast. Hidden IgG food sensitivities and gluten sensitivities also contribute to inflammation. Get tested today to find out the source of your inflammation. BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Cancer prevention also involves the immune system. Natural Killer (NK) blood cells destroy dangerous cells and other foreign invaders that can cause health problems. When our immune systems are running at optimal capacity, we increase the chances of fighting cancer or precancerous cells. Cells need food for energy, strength and proliferation. There's evidence that certain fruits and vegetables rich in plant-based nutrients can both prevent and halt tumor growth. Good nutrition promotes health, but nutrition is only part of the story. Daily exercise, maintaining an ideal weight, adequate sleep and regular physical checkups should be part of each person’s cancer-prevention regime. You deserve to have a healthy, happy life. Start now. You’ll be glad you did. Dr. Sharon Norling practices Advanced Functional Medicine in Westlake Village. Call 818.707.9355 or visit DrSharonNorling.com. RISK Ranked a possible carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer Linked to mammary tumors A known human carcinogen and one of 48 chemicals identified as mammary carcinogens in animals by the National Toxicology Program Increased the incidence of skin cancer in irradiated mice Absorbed through the skin and gastrointestinal tract; discovered in biopsy samples from breast tumors May cause dermatitis and skin irritation, inhibit skin cell growth; linked to kidney and liver problems Breaks down skin’s moisture barrier, leading to dry skin and premature aging; combined with other chemicals, may become a “nitrosamine,” a potent carcinogen

"YOUR HEARING IS OUR #1 PRIORITY"

PRIORITY HEARING AID GROUP

f you suffer from hearing loss, you’re in good company, as some 48 million Americans report a decline in hearing ability. As hearing can deteriorate gradually or suddenly, as a result of exposure to loud noise, many people are surprised to learn they have some measurable degree of hearing loss. In fact, an estimated 14% of 45-64 year olds have some form of hearing loss, and by age 65, one out of every three people have some type of hearing decline, according to the Hearing Loss Association of America. The good news is hearing aids can dramatically improve your hearing ability. “I feel like a new man,” says Michael C., of Westlake Village. “My life has improved dramatically by using Priority’s hearing aids,” says Michael, who scheduled a hearing test with Priority Hearing Aid Group in Westlake Village after attending a Lunch & Learn seminar about hearing loss. “Hearing loss for me was such a subtle, slow progressive problem, I didn’t realize there was something awry,” says Michael. “I was startled to learn how much of a hearing loss problem I had.” IN GOOD HANDS

The experienced, professional staff at Priority Hearing Aid Group has been specializing in improving people’s hearing for more than 10 years. With offices in Westlake Village and Ventura, Priority Hearing Aid Group takes pride in providing personalized service to the community. They offer a full range of diagnostic and preventive hearing healthcare professional services, including 52

comprehensive hearing evaluations, hearing aid sales and rehabilitative and preventive counseling, to effectively address and correct hearing loss in patients. Having worked together as a team for 10 years, the cohesive, caring staff at Priority Hearing Aid Group treats patients like family, going the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. “We really get to know our patients and their lifestyles, so we know which hearing aids will best fit their situations and can tailor their hearing aids to their specific needs,” says Priority’s Owner Mike Specter. MAKING THE GRADE

Priority Hearing Aid Group’s special brand of personalized service has earned it an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and recognition as Readers Choice Award winners in both Los Angeles and Ventura County for four years running. Perhaps the best reward for Priority Hearing Aid Group’s custom high-quality service is the trust their patients place in them, which keeps them coming back—some 85% of their business is from return satisfied customers and referrals. In line with their goal to promote better hearing through education, technology and customer service, Priority Hearing Aid Group’s dedicated staff and boardcertified specialists are committed to keeping up-to-date with the latest technological improvements in the hearing industry in order to offer the most current options to patients. Priority Hearing Aid Group offers several different types and brands of hearing aids, in

contrast to some practices that specialize in one manufacturer’s devices. As each person’s condition is unique, one hearing aid does not fit all and offering a variety of choices ensures each person’s unique needs are optimally addressed. Determining the best type of hearing aid depends on several factors, including lifestyle and degree of hearing loss. Priority Hearing Aid Group accepts most major insurances, and credit is available through Care Credit and other means. CHECK IT OUT

Priority Hearing Aid Group hosts regular events to educate the public about hearing loss. Participants are often given the opportunity to try out the newest hearing aid technology to see how it works. Visit their Facebook page for information about upcoming open houses, Lunch & Listen seminars and local lectures. In addition to its longstanding Westlake Village office, Priority Hearing Aid Group is currently expanding its Ventura presence, with a grand opening at its new Montalvo Square location this month. If hearing is a concern for you or a loved one, make an appointment at your local Priority Hearing Aid Group office, where the friendly staff is eager to help with your hearing issues today. Priority Hearing Aid Group is located at 790 Hampshire Road, Suite B, in Westlake Village and at 2175 Goodyear Avenue, Suite 102, in Ventura. Parting Thoughts

ARTICLE KIM PAGANO

S

o many of us have been touched by cancer, either personally or through a loved one. If you've listened to my radio show, you know I focus on the brighter side of life, so let me explain the brighter side of cancer and positive thinking. First, I’d like to recognize everyone who has fought their own battles with cancer, as well as all of the angels who have lost their fight with cancer. A supportive family member, friend, volunteer or hair donor can be the biggest gift for anyone going through cancer. There are so many different ways that you can be there to ease their pain and give people hope during their everyday struggles. Driving someone to an appointment, helping with meals, house cleaning or even just visiting and being that uplifting voice are great ways to brighten someone’s day. If you can help manage just one responsibility that the individual person or family doesn’t have to think about, it can make their lives seem so much more manageable in that moment and can even help them to maintain a somewhat normal schedule. Over the years, I have found that it is important to be a miracle in someone's life when they are in need of brightness. Instead of waiting to be asked by the individual or family during their time of need when dealing with cancer, go ahead and just jump in and lend a helping hand. I have found that most of these men and women who are diagnosed with cancer are what we would call 58

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | October 2016

Type A personalities. They seem to find it hard to ask for help in their time of need, so anything you can do to make their life easier will certainly not go unnoticed. Another way to help those dealing with cancer is to get involved with support organizations in your community, such as Susan G. Komen, American Cancer Society, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Relay for Life, and Rolling for Pink. My involvement in these organizations has taught me how to be more helpful during an important time of need for others. Recently, I was honored to be chosen as an honorary chair for the American Cancer Society, an accomplishment of which I am very proud. From the American Cancer Society: "From my perspective, Kim should know that she was chosen as an honorary chair for her commitment to the community through her radio program, her commitment to looking at the positive elements of life, and her support of previous breast cancer events sponsored by the ACS." I am very grateful for my involvement with the American Cancer Society, and I will continue to share the brighter side of life with those in need in Ventura County and beyond.

I offer these helpful tips to love yourself healthy. May they provide hope and motivation to those struggling with the daily hardships of cancer. 1. If It Doesn’t Grow, Don’t Eat It: Our bodies were designed to consume food and water found in nature. Clean eating can be extremely beneficial to your health. 2. Listen to Your Body: Your body loves you and wants you to have the best health. When your body isn’t happy, it’s going to let you know. Learn to listen to these signals. If you are listening, you will know how and what you need. I always say close your eyes and look within to figure out what your body really needs. 3. Read Labels: As more people are reading labels, avoiding unhealthy ingredients is easier. Familiarize yourself with the ones to avoid. 4. Have Fun in the Kitchen: Invite friends or family members over to cook together. Everyone can add a different twist to a recipe and contribute ingredients, while making delicious food and having a great time. Remember to use healthy ingredients! 5. Love Yourself Unconditionally: Always remember that there is one thing that heals every problem, and that is loving yourself. When you start to love yourself more each day, it’s amazing how your life will get better. You’ll feel better. You’ll get the job you want. You’ll have the money you need. Your relationships will improve, and the negative relationships will fall by the wayside and new ones will begin. The most important thing I would like all of us to know is that we are all ENOUGH! Kim Pagano brings you the Brighter Side of the 805, Saturdays from 6 to 8 a.m., on the award-winning talk radio station AM 1590 KVTA.
