Recent sports or academic highlight?

I recently competed at the AAU national volleyball tournament in Orlando, Florida, with my club volleyball teammates. We went 10-1 and finished 9th out of 152 teams. I have also enjoyed winning two state championships with my high school teammates.

Personal highlights?

I play volleyball and enjoy swimming, traveling, hanging out with friends and sleeping.

How do you maintain balance?

I’m still figuring that one out. With work, school and sports, I’m often going straight from one thing to the next. For me, the key is to start early on school assignments when I have some time.

Plans for the future?

I’m not sure exactly where I’m going to attend college yet, but I’d like to pursue a degree in business or marketing. I would also like to experience living out of state.

In 2022 I had two interceptions as our football team delivered a memorable performance by defeating the top ranked OCS Saints for our first win at home of the season.

Personal highlights?

My name is Tag Holt, my mom’s name is Shellie and my dad’s name is Geoff. I play football and basketball. In my free time I like to watch sports and hang out with my friends.

How do you maintain balance?

I work hard to manage my time efficiently to ensure I am focused on what needs to be done right now so I can get things completed on time.

Plans for the future?

I would like to attend the University of Oklahoma and complete a degree in business or communications which would enable me to pursue a career in the sports media industry.

Welcome to Our Style Issue!

What constitutes style? Most of us probably would find this concept difficult to define or explain to someone, though we know it when we see it.

In this issue, we look at style from several different points of view.

When it comes to decorating a home, it’s important to craft a space that represents your personal style while investing in quality pieces that bring a room together. As a full-service interior designer, Denise Huff from Huff & Co. Designs works with her clients to help transform their homes into a beautiful oasis that reflects their interests and style. See story, p. 30.

Are you, like me, a fan of home makeover shows like those on HGTV, where they take a dated or drab interior and elevate it to a whole new level of function and beauty? If so, you need to visit Wunderhaus, a boutique high-end consignment store in Norman that offers a myriad of products and services, including custom upholstery and custom window treatments, that are drawing rave reviews from clients. Story on p. 38.

Of course, the term "style" also applies to apparel and accessories, and how they are paired to present a pulled-together and flattering look. The "look" was chic, fun and flirty when Pink Attitude (shoppinkattitude.com) showed off some of its offerings during a photo shoot at Sip at Selah coffee shop. Go ahead, take a look! Story on p. 42.

Are you considering retiring in the near future? In presenting his retirement checklist, a local Certified Financial Planner suggests going beyond routine budgeting. Retirement, he says, is the time to explore your dreams, priorities and values. So when you start making your own checklist, he says, make sure to include the means by which you can check off at least some items on your bucket list so that you can live life in style, your way.

In closing, I'd like to ask: Who's glad the days of 100-plus-degree weather are over and fall weather is around the corner? My suggestion to you is: Take the time to live in the moment. I, for one, look forward to my first pumpkin spice latte, cool mornings, the changing colors of leaves, fall festivals and craft fairs, and all the other things that make autumn here so wonderful.

HEALTHY SMILES for life.

Did you know gum disease doesn’t just affect adults but can also be found in kids and teenagers?

Gingivitis typically presents as gum tenderness, redness, puffiness, and/ or bleeding. Before the latest research emerged, it was understood that gingivitis was completely reversible but now we understand that inflammatory markers persist in the gum tissue even after resolution of symptoms. Treating early and providing our young patients with the proper tools and instruction to prevent or halt the progression of gum disease is critically important.

Summertime is a great time to get your children in for a thorough dental exam and cleaning. With the loss of a structured schedule and often more frequent snacking, preventative care and routine dental visits play a vital role in maintaining a healthy mouth and gums.

We understand the importance of oral health during every stage of life and partner with our patients to achieve optimal oral health. We would love the opportunity to help you!

Equipped for Tomorrow

With more than 9,000 meeting reservations and 28,000 hours of use annually, the Education Center is in need of state-of-theart technology and meeting space upgrades.

The Education Center will receive a $1.84 million renovation, with 50% of the funding coming from the Norman Regional Auxiliary and 50% being raised by the Norman Regional Health Foundation.

“One aspect of the foundation’s $4 million Equipped for Tomorrow capital campaign is raising funds to support the Education Center renovation. This facility will be a central point on the Porter campus, and a state-of-the-art meeting resource for our community,” said NRHF Director Erin Barnhart. “Generous

community donors have embraced the renovation efforts by making legacy contributions for each of the six classrooms.”

These donors include the Farzaneh Family Foundation, Judy J. Hatfield & the Hatfield Family, Craig & Susan Jones, Gerry & Pat Mayes Family—in memory of Dr. Robert Mayfield, Norman Anesthesia Providers and the OG&E Foundation.

The Education Center is scheduled to re-open in 2024 and will continue teaching nursing students, health care leaders and first responders. The Education Center will be the cornerstone of the Porter Health Village, which includes the City of Norman’s Adult Wellness Center and a new Behavioral

EDUCATING THE NEXT GENERATION

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE | HEALTH + WELLNESS 22
Healer Cole McCutchen donates blood during Our Blood Institute's visit to Norman Regional’s Education Center.

Health Center. The Education Center’s programming will focus on several pillars:

SUPPORTING COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND EVENTS

As a community health system, NRHS supports organizations by offering complimentary meeting space in the Education Center.

During the last calendar year of a fully functioning Education Center (2019), more than 2,500 meeting reservations were utilized. These classrooms were home to 1,000-plus mothers-to-be going through birthing classes; yoga for patients battling cancer; support groups for patients recovering from bariatric surgery; and adult and children community members participating in CPR training.

EDUCATING TOMORROW’S NURSES

Due to the pandemic, the health care workforce suffered great dips, and a new generation of nurses need the latest education and skills to lead us into the future. With Oklahoma ranking 46th in the nation for nurses per 100,000 residents, the need to train more nurses is critical.

In an effort to increase the nursing workforce, NRHS is partnering with the Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing at the University of Oklahoma to establish a nursing campus in Norman.

The Education Center will be the epicenter of this program beginning with an initial class of 23 students that will graduate in the spring of 2024. Classroom equipment requirements include audiovisual components for webinars and adult and pediatric simulators that collect data, provide real-time feedback and evaluate performance.

ENHANCING SAFETY & SECURITY TRAINING

Serving as a leader in emergency management and emerging infectious disease care are two NRHS priorities.

Annually, hundreds of medical personnel’s skills are assessed in the Education Center on stroke life support; on didactic and skills for emergency physician residents; and on reducing workplace violence.

Since 2014, NRHS also has formed a team to train for highly infectious diseases (Ebola, SARS and most recently, COVID). NRHS hosted safety and security trainings evolve due to local/ national circumstances. One example is active shooter drills for the regional medical response team.

The City of Norman Police Department also utilizes the Education Center for their supervisor leadership conferences.

Major Chad Vincent, City of Norman Police Department, said the following about the relationship: “We are thankful for our long-standing partnership with Norman Regional Health System and for the ability to utilize the NRHS Education Center. This facility has proven to be an excellent space for a variety of training formats and the staff is always a pleasure to work with.”

In December 2020, the Education Center was established as a COVID-19 vaccination site for health care workers and emergency responders. The conference rooms were configured to support vaccination and observation rooms, all staffed by NRHS healers. More than 4,500 medical and first responder personnel were vaccinated so they could continue to care for patients.

“While the Education Center has served us well for 30 years, we are excited to move it to the next level. The stateof-the-art technology will ensure that we are able to provide training opportunities and education both virtually and in-person,” said Brittni McGill, chief nursing officer for NRHS.

ASSEMBLING CHARCUTERIE your own work of art

HOSTING TIPS | FOOD + BEVERAGE

Kelly Burton

A self-described stay-at-home mom, Kelly Burton previously worked as a registered nurse in women’s health.

Kelly says she has “always loved celebrating people” and enjoys planning “all details and touches that go into a beautiful gathering.”

"What a rewarding journey it has been!" she says about an interest that started as a hobby and turned into a business: Boards By Kelly.

Today, Kelly turns food—meats, cheeses, crackers, dips/jams and more—into her artist's palette. The charcuterie board is the resulting work of art.

"We were created to gather, so let’s gather often and celebrate well!”

KELLY BURTON USES MEATS, VEGGIES AND MORE TO CREATE HER PALETTE

STYLE YOUR OTHER CHARCUTERIE CHOICES

Dips and jam are essential to any successful charcuterie board. The fan favorite? Fig jam! Spread on crackers and top with cheese—and you’ve got a sweet-and-savory bite! Hummus is a great option to the board when cucumber, baby carrots, sugar snap peas and/or cherry tomatoes are featured. Honey also is an excellent sweet touch. I also like to have a bowl of whipped cream cheese with a drizzle of honey on top. It sounds so simple, but dipped with pretzels or crackers, it’s amazing!

Speaking of sweet, adding sweet items to the board is a must, whether it’s chocolate-covered pretzels or sea salt chocolate caramels. I also love to weave in desserts such as cookies, cupcakes or macaroons.

Showcase the changing seasons by adding special seasonal foods. For example, fall is great for pumpkin dips and pomegranate seeds.

When including fruits and vegetables, make sure they are completely dry; otherwise, you will end up with soggy crackers and breads.

To really elevate your board, add florals, such as carnations, hydrangeas and/or daisies.

SELECT YOUR MAIN FOODS

Spicy foods are a common request. I love to include spiced or seasoned salami and hot capocollo into the mix. There are also some delicious spicy cheeses such as pepper gouda, jalapeno pepper cheddar, spicy Colby jack and goat cheese stuffed sweet peppers, which I season with “everything but the bagel” seasoning. Brie cheese is a popular favorite that’s delicious accompanied with crackers.

“When creating a charcuterie board, I always think of whom I am serving,” she says. “If it is a gathering with both men and women, I tend to make sure I have more meat options, such as salami, prosciutto and calabrese.”

HOSTING TIPS | FOOD + BEVERAGE 26

GENERAL ASSEMBLY TIPS

During assembly, do each element at one time. Sprinkle these items around your board one at a time. So, place all the breads/crackers first, then layer on the cheeses, meats, vegetables, fruits and bowls for dips/jams. To fill in the gaps, I always add blueberries last.

The most important tip is to make the board your own! Piece your favorite foods together to create a board that is unique to you!  Don't be afraid to try something new! Believe me, it will still get eaten if it isn't perfect. Gathering around the table to enjoy charcuterie with those you love being around is the best part!

STYLE YOUR CHEESES & MEATS

To cut brie cheese perfectly to make a decorative wheel effect, slice when cold. As it reaches room temperature (which is when it's ideal to eat) the creaminess of the cheese will make the cuts less clean and will smear on your knife as well on the outer layer of the cheese.

The elegant part of charcuterie is folding meat decoratively. When folding salami, you have two main options: a salami rose or accordion style, to make a “salami river.” For the former, you’ll need seven salami pieces, which you will assemble in a line, placing one-half on top of the other half, then folding in half and rolling. Use toothpicks or place in a 2-ounce dip cup to maintain its shape. For the salami river, fold the salami in half, then in half again, so it forms a triangle. Place all the triangles together, and you’ve got a beautiful presentation!

One Nice Dress

OUR SISTER'S CLOSET HELPS WOMEN AND KIDS TO REBUILD & FLOURISH

For almost all of us, wearing a new outfit lifts our spirits. In some cases, however, that new outfit isn’t just a temporary thrill – it can dramatically change lives.

Such is the case for many of the shoppers at Our Sister’s Closet in Oklahoma City. The high-quality resale clothing store is open to the public, but also provides free vouchers to women who come from backgrounds of abuse and poverty, and who are referred by local government and nonprofit agencies.

The goal is to provide these clients with professional clothing that in turn enables them to find good jobs, provide for their children, re-establish a household and regain their independence.

Often, it’s just the lack of a good interview outfit that keeps women from getting a financially stable job, which makes Our Sisters Closet even more important, said Pam Taber, store manager.

Opened in April 2007, the store is affiliated with the Oklahoma City YWCA, and its proceeds provide financial support to the latter’s services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.

It’s located at 2209 SW 74th St. in Oklahoma City, in the Walnut Square Shopping Center, and hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Our store is very clean, with high-quality items, and you would never think it was a thrift store when you walk in the door,” Pam said. “It feels like walking into a boutique. That’s one of the first things our first-time shoppers usually comment on.”

Art for Every Room

FURNITURE STYLE AND PLACEMENT PLAY KEY ROLES IN HOME DECOR SELECTION

When it comes to decorating a home, it’s important to craft a space that represents your personal style while investing in quality pieces that bring a room together. It can be difficult to find a balance between furniture and art decor, especially when taking the size of each room into account.

Adding art pieces into the home doesn’t have to be limited to prints, wall hangings and sculptures. In fact, light fixtures, mirrors and traditional furniture can become a centerpiece of the home when you know where to look.

As a full-service interior designer, Denise Huff from Huff & Co. Designs (denise. DecoratingDen.com) works with her clients on their various needs, from paint consults to window treatments, all to ensure her customers’ dreams can become a reality.

When first looking to decorate a room, Denise recommends furniture placement as the starting point to understand how the scale and proportion of each item will affect the overall style of the room. With Huff & Co. Designs, she can buy furniture, lighting, artwork and rugs straight from the manufacturer rather than shopping all over town.

All kinds of artwork can elevate the atmosphere of a room, and Denise likes to work with the basics before adding decor.

“It's the jewelry to the outfit,” she said. “We may have a big wall that can handle a large piece of art, but until I know what furniture is going underneath that, I'm not making that decision. Say I have a 54-inch-wide console. I don't want a 72-inch piece of artwork.”

Understanding your space is one of the most vital steps before decorating a room. Denise believes in building inspiration from

one specific piece when in doubt. Everyone’s style differs, but by choosing one decoration to focus on, you’ll find it easier to locate other pieces of artwork under the same umbrella of design. Denise even looks at the furniture’s fabric to find creative influence.

Bedrooms can be stressful to decorate, as many aim to create a space of comfort. However, creativity can go hand-in-hand with your safe space.

“In bedrooms, it's fun to do an accent wall if possible, which could be with regular paint or metallic,” Huff said. “Board and batten walls are really popular right now, where you create a three-dimensional design and then paint the whole wall all one color. So you're getting this entire wall of art, but it's also three-dimensional. And wallpaper is always a great way to introduce color, pattern and texture into a bedroom.”

Acquired while vacationing in Germany, Denise used this fabric-stretched-on-canvas artwork as inspiration for all design aspects of her personal home office.

For clients interested in more traditional artwork, Denise thinks of flowers and picturesque landscapes, whereas clients who prefer modern art will lean into more abstract pieces.

To add vibrance and character to the basic elements of a room, consider ditching your plain mirror. Typically integrated with a wood design, simple mirrors serve to reflect yourself and your space, without adding anything extra to the mix. However, Denise recommends combining artwork with an architectural element to elevate your space.

“Instead of a mirror over a dresser, I would much rather have a large piece of artwork with a lamp and a few accessories across the top,” she said. “Then, on another wall, I would look for a piece that falls into the architectural design, so it could be metal, it could be wood, but it would also have a three-dimensional, layered look as well.”

Surprisingly, the placement of furniture and artwork alike can change the entire setting of a room. If certain

pieces in the home cannot be moved around, focus on incorporating other elements to build around the centerpiece rather than just starting fresh. Figuring out how to put your favorite pieces on display can help redesign your entire space.

“In some cases, the client already has the photography or the artwork, and it's a matter of placement,” Denise said.

“One of my clients from several years ago had this great piece of artwork in her entry, and then a Hobby Lobby piece in her great room. If that piece in the entry is the one you love but you spend all your time in the great room, why is it not in there? You don't get to see it and appreciate it.”

Bringing Order Through Organization

WELL KEPT’S JESSICA HARROZ SHARES TIPS FOR KITCHENS & PANTRIES

Jessica Harroz, co-founder of Well Kept, has learned from experience how an orderly, organized space can create ease and peacefulness in your life. She is living proof that structure and well-planned systems provide a sense of security and well-being, a feeling that she says applies to the young and old alike.

“For both adults and kids, your mental state is more at ease when things are in order,” she explains. “Especially if you have little ones in the home, it helps to have everything in its place.”

As Jessica’s own children reached school age, she was debating what the next chapter of her life might look like and her natural inclination to organize led to an exciting business venture.

“I realized that one of the things I could do to improve my mood at any time was clean out a closet,” she says. “My mom was actually the one who brought it to my attention and pointed out that plenty of people need help organizing.”

Jessica and co-founder Ashlee Sanders opened Well Kept in March 2020 to serve homes and businesses in the Oklahoma City metro area and have since expanded to serve Tulsa and Kansas. They excel at creating aesthetically pleasing, functional organizational solutions in spaces of all sizes, including closets, offices, kitchens and pantries.

“The kitchen and pantry are the heart of the home, so they really need to be functional,” Jessica says. “When they are not, you actually lose money by buying too many items or letting food expire. Once a system is in place, it is easy to maintain and helps maximize both your time and grocery budget.”

Jessica says that deep shelves are a common pantry problem, where groceries can get lost if they are pushed to the back.  She says the key to making the best use of the space is to use the depth as an asset.

“Use large, clear bins to help you see what you have,” she adds. “Put like items with like items in each tub, and make sure everything is labeled [photo 1]. In a well-organized pantry, there are labels and designated spots for everything.”

In the kitchen, Jessica says one of her best tips is to think vertically. Using vertical space allows you to consider ways to best organize both inside and outside of your cabinets.

“Even if shelves are not available, you can add risers [photo 2] to double the capacity of any cabinet or counter. Think up, not out,” she adds.

Another area where clutter happens is under the kitchen sink, an area that Jessica urges is crucial to organize since it houses many frequently used products.

“The best thing you can do is add a turntable under the sink [photo 3]. It adds a lot of storage and provides convenient access,” she advises. “Take everything out of the original packaging and put it in clear, stackable containers with lids [4]. This lets you see exactly how much of everything you have in a quick glance.”

Jessica says that the time and effort put into creating clutter-free spaces provides immediate benefits, and maintaining the systems allows continued enjoyment and stress-relief.

“To this day, every time I go to my pantry, I find joy,” she says. “I love it every single day.”

Well Kept provides personalized organizational services, designed to optimize each client’s lifestyle, goals and space. The process starts with a free consultation, and Jessica and Ashlee work directly with clients through each step of the process. Virtual consultations are available, as well as guided organization and decluttering options.

Wunderhaus Design + Consign

Family-owned Boutique

Consignment Store's Focus is on the Solution

A family-owned, boutique high-end consignment store in Norman is enjoying so much success that the owners are thinking of expanding in the near future. That’s no mean feat in an economy in which even longtime businesses are forever shutting their doors, thanks to ongoing post-pandemic supply chain issues and a challenging economy.

Beth Ketchum, co-owner with her husband, Kenny, of Wunderhaus Design + Consign ( WunderhausFC.com), 1284 North Interstate Drive (Robinson Crossing), believed this success can be attributed to several factors.

Experience and Pride of Ownership

Prior to opening Wunderhaus Design + Consign, Beth operated a drapery and design business, which she rebranded under the name Wunderhaus Interiors in 2016. In September 2022, she and her husband changed the name to Wunderhouse Design + Consign to better reflect their diversified offerings.

Their daughter, Cat, helps run the business’s website and social media pages. When his schedule allows, Kenny—who has 25 years’ experience in the energy industry, a position that takes him to all four corners of the United States on a regular basis—assists with deliveries and enjoys working the showroom on Saturdays.

Diverse Offerings

Wunderhaus Design + Consign offers a myriad of products and services, from furniture consignment to custom upholstery. They also do the whole shebang when it comes to custom window treatments—e.g., draperies, romans, cornices and shades—and custom

bedding, including pillows and cushions. If, like me, you are a fan of home makeover shows like those on HGTV, where they take a dated or drab interior and elevate it to a whole new level of function and beauty, Wunderhaus is a great place to start.

Furniture Consignment

Noting that her clientele is looking for gently used, high-end pieces, Beth said that furniture and home décor brought to them for consignment must be “of good quality, in excellent condition, assembled, clean, odor/pet-free, and ready for resale.” Once an item sells, the customer and business split the sale 50/50.

Looking to spruce up your home? Wunderhaus offers a wide assortment of fine furniture (sofas, chairs, tables, etc., in many popular styles, some vintage) as well as rugs and runners, throw pillows, chandeliers and lamps, artwork and more.

Furniture-moving Services

This versatile business will also handle virtually any furniture-moving services needed, from “short hauls like moving furniture from one neighbor to the next and longer hauls statewide,” Beth notes.  They call the service “Wunderhaul.”

They’re happy to move other items as well, including appliances, boxes, lawn equipment, ATVs, toys, bikes, grills, and even boats and personal watercraft.

“People hire us to pick up and deliver goods from box stores as well as places like Habitat and Goodwill. We are currently booking dorm and apartment moves for the upcoming school year.”

Design Services

“We offer in-home consultations, and we always welcome clients to bring in photos and samples of existing decor so that we can get a feel for their style,” Beth said. “I or my installer will measure for window coverings.”

The shop also enjoys a brisk upholstery business, taking in quality pieces that may have worn or frayed areas, stained or faded fabrics, or outdated colors/patterns and giving them new life.

“I have over a 20-year business relationship with our upholsterer, and I’m confident in the excellent craftsmanship and reasonable turnaround times. (See before-and-after photos on their website and social media (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok).

Amazing Service

“I strive to provide the best service and product to my clients and feel I do so because I truly care about every project, no matter the size. From helping someone with their first apartment or putting the final touches on their dream home, every customer receives my very best effort,” Beth says.

To make their shopping experience as pleasant as possible, the business holds seasonally based “Mimosa Saturdays” (with or sans alcohol). Coffee and lattes are available daily.

“My goal is to create a fun, inviting atmosphere for our shoppers. I’d like to invite everyone to see what makes us different and why we are voted The Norman Transcript ’s Readers’ Choice Awards’ No. 1 consignment store.”

About the Family

When not working, Beth said she and her husband enjoy spending weekends at the lake, traveling and cooking together. They also enjoy

spending time with their daughter, Cat, who lives in Norman and works for the Department of Environmental Quality. They have three fur babies—two dachshunds, Tucker and Pickie, and paraplegic Yorkie named Porkchop—and a flock of fancy chickens.

Beth is a board member of the Norman Business Association and of the SEC’s Retail Committee, Norman Chamber of Commerce and Professional Mom’s Network.

Community Involvement

“Wunderhaus is eager to help the Norman community,” Beth said. “Recently, we participated in a sponsorship for the Norman North High School Pom Golf Tournament, a team for Sooners, Suds, and Grub Trivia Night, and had a huge success partnering with Mitchell’s Jewelry for the United Way’s Stuff the Bus school supply drive by collecting school supplies to help students at Norman, Noble, Little Axe, Lexington and Robin Hill schools. We are always looking for ways to help our community.”

Wunderhaus currently has a robust staff of eight, but that’s likely to increase in the coming months.

“Our little venture of providing Norman with a boutique high-end consignment store is rapidly growing into a much larger business,” Beth notes with pride. “We are looking to expand our space and toying with the idea to open a second location. I’m humbled by the support of our community.”

She added: “We focus on the positive, dispel the negative and strive to provide not only the best customer service but the best experience for our customers. Our motto is ‘Only Solutions.’ I tell people, ‘everyone has problems but not everyone has solutions.’ At Wunderhaus, we focus on the solution.”

How to Build a Sartorially Sophisticated Closet

Now that fall 2023 is upon us, it’s time for stylish men to throw away their entire wardrobes and completely start over, right?

Not quite! Discarding every garment from season to season is not reasonable, nor is it financially wise.

The surest way to stay on trend without breaking the bank is to add a few new accessories! Doing so will keep a man’s look modern and on par with the hottest runway looks.

Here are some exciting accessories to add to a sartorially sophisticated closet:

Crossbody bag—A sleek crossbody bag offers an equal measure of function and fashion. Check out Blue Seven ( MyBlueSeven.com) for a great style that fits your personality. (photo 1)

Sunglasses—Even though the temperature is dropping, there are plenty of sunny days to sport the latest silhouettes in sunglasses. You'll find a nice selection at Blue Seven. (photo 2)

Bucket Hat—No longer only worn on bad hair days, bucket hats are a great way to modernize last year’s outfits. Chic, affordable styles can be found at many stores, large and small.

Scarf—Now larger, bolder and more luxurious, a statement scarf is an easy way to be trés chic in the chilly autumn air. Try one in merino wool or cashmere. Some nice ones are listed on Etsy; you’ll also find some upscale scarves at many stores in the metro catering to the well-dressed man.

Fragrance —Every man needs a signature scent this fall. Why not splurge and select a dramatic cologne from Cayman’s (ShopCaymans.com). Best-sellers include Bond No. 9 New York Wall Street, Creed Green Irish Tweed and Creed Aventus. (photo 3)

THE little BLACK DRESS

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?

Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves.

We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be. “We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.

“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.

If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life.

Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type?

Retirement Checklist

DON'T FORGET TO INCLUDE YOUR LIFESTYLE, BUCKET LIST WHEN DRAWING UP YOUR PLAN

Planning for retirement? Before you can cross that bridge, you’ll need to cross some important items off your to-do list. This handy checklist of 10 crucial steps can help you visualize how far you are from being retirement ready.

• ☐ Retirement Budget

• Understand what your income will be, and how you can confidently spend the money you have accumulated for retirement.

• ☐ Emergency Savings

• Prepare for emergencies by saving at least three months’ living expenses, and have that money easily available to you.

• ☐ Health Insurance

• Understand your options with Medicare and define a strategy for covering healthcare expenses for the long haul.

• ☐ Extended Care

• Make arrangements in the event that you or a loved one encounters a health issue requiring full-time care.

• ☐ Social Security Strategy

• Evaluate your Social Security benefit options and be aware of how they impact your long-term plan.

• ☐ Tax Strategy

• Have a sound tax strategy to guide you through the process of spending money from both taxable and tax-deferred accounts.

• ☐ 401k Strategy

• Have a strategy for your 401(k) plan and determine the best time for you to access the money, based on your goals.1

• ☐ Lifestyle & Location

• Consider where you’ll live, both short- and long-term. Have a plan for funding a move and understand the timing involved.

• • ☐ Bucket List

• Write down your personal goals for your retirement years. Explore your dreams, priorities and values.

• ☐ Estate Strategy

• Develop an estate approach that includes how you want your assets to be allocated, and who will handle your estate.

NOT QUITE READY?

If you’re not as prepared for retirement as you’d like to be, just reach out. At Partners in Planning, we can fine-tune these strategies so you can finish your checklist and get started on that bucket list.

*Distributions from 401(k) plans and most other employer-sponsored retirement plans are taxed as ordinary income and, if taken before age 59½, may be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty. Generally, once you reach age 73, you must begin taking required minimum distributions.
