LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy Holiday The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes the opportunity to recapture the magic we once felt during our youth. Many of us aim to create traditions for our own families that hark back to the sights, sounds, and scents that made this time of year so special. Whether it's the delightful aromas, the twinkling lights, the festive activities, or a delightful amalgamation of these elements, they all contribute to the enchantment of the season. This December, we're excited to celebrate the enchantment of the season and showcase what our city has in store to make the holidays and year ahead unique, unforgettable, and stress-free. We've curated a selection of cherished traditions, must-visit holiday destinations brimming with holiday spirit, and recommendations for dining and entertainment in our region. It is the time of the year to give back and City Lifestyle has a Giving Campaign to give back to our community. Many are facing loneliness or grief during this time. It's important to remember that while the holidays are a source of joy for many, they can also be a time of sorrow for those who have lost loved ones. In the true spirit of the season, let's extend a helping hand to our fellow community members who may be in need or feeling isolated. Our sincere wish for you this season is that you experience an abundance of love and inner peace. Let's come together and show kindness, empathy, and love to one another, fostering a sense of togetherness and unity. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyous and heartwarming holiday season! Happy Holidays!

Enchanted Events Bringing Fairy Tales To Life ARTICLE BY ROBIN SEATON JEFFERSON

“The most sophisticated people I know, inside they are all children," claimed American puppeteer, animator, cartoonist, actor, inventor and filmmaker Jim Henson. He also stated: “Life's like a movie, write your own ending. Keep believing, keep pretending.” “Children only believe in superheroes or princesses for so long. So, when they really believe that Spider Man or Cinderella actually came to their birthday party, it just makes them feel so special,” says Jennifer Ferry, owner of Enchanted Events. “It just makes them so happy. It really is so sweet.”

As a small, boutique-style company, Enchanted Events team members specialize in character parties for children and adults, with one important distinction. “In fact, we're the only company in the St. Louis area that exclusively hires trained actors, singers and dancers to portray your child's favorite characters,” Jennifer says. “We pride ourselves on the live performances we do at every event, and our vocally trained princesses will amaze your guests with their regal beauty and stunning voices.” CONTINUED >

“Children only believe in superheroes or princesses for so long. So, when they really believe that Spider Man or Cinderella actually came to their birthday party, it just makes them feel so special.”~Jennifer Ferry.

In contrast to other professional entertainment companies in St. Louis and St. Charles Counties, Jennifer says she employs only 15 to 20 individuals to host their events. “Because we only hire top of the line performers, you know that when booking with us, you'll get an experienced, talented and beautiful performer, in a high-end costume, ready to bring your child’s favorite character to life, right before your eyes. Others might just look like the characters. But we bring fairy tales to life.” Jennifer says it’s a unique and treasured experience for children when the superhero or princess of their dreams comes to their party. “It’s different than sitting in line for hours at a theme park to meet your favorite character. They're actually coming to your party. And it’s different from characters coming to your party to watch you open presents and eat cake," she says. Entertainers from Enchanted Events bring games, sing, do makeovers and take pictures. Ballerinas conduct ballet classes. Superheroes hold training academies. Pirates lead treasure hunts. Spies hide clues while kids decode messages. Jennifer says many of her employees, who perform at birthday and family parties, reunions, charity events parades and small business and corporate events of all kinds, have gone on to pursue their own dreams in acting, singing and dancing. Some perform at The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis and on Broadway in New York. And, yet another went on tour in Italy. Entertainers from Enchanted Events also have performed at St. Louis Children’s

Hospital, end of life events and even funerals. Performers of all ages perform for people of all ages, Jennifer adds. She says it is quite something to see residents of a nursing home waltzing with their own favorite superhero or princess. Jennifer, herself, got a job with Enchanted Events while she was in high school at Francis Howell Central. She bought the company when she was in college in 2020. “We almost didn’t survive,” she says of the difficulty of operating a small performance company during the pandemic. But Jennifer was a marketing major at Washington University then. “There were many actors out of work at the time. We stayed outside and social distanced. We made it happen. I hired people, redesigned the website, got on social media, did outdoor events and told people, ‘If you love us, refer us,” she says. Her business doubled by 2021, and tripled in 2022. Enchanted Events offers more than 50 characters for their events, including the Ice Queen, Snow Princess, Rapunzel, Mermaid Princess, Glass Slipper Princess, Sleeping Princess and Snow White, among others. Superheroes include Spidey Guy, Captain USA, Bat Guy and/or Gall, Super Gal and/or Guy, Wondrous Woman and Cat Gal, among others. There are secret agents and spies, fairies and villains, pirates, wizarding students, toy friends and even old Hollywood royalty such as Marilyn and Audrey. 636.279.5076 EnchantedEventsSTL.com

HOLIDAY CUISINE FOR ON LAND OR WATER

Two Fresh Chefs And Food Offerings In Augusta ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Miss Augusta

C HE F ’S SE LE CT ION | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

Creative comfort food with innovative touches is now abundant in Augusta. During October, Hoffmann Family of Companies managers hired Chef Michael Brewer to create dishes at the group's Augusta-based The White House Cafe, located at 5567 Walnut St. The restaurant previously housed the Edelweiss Guest House and Augusta White House Restaurant. Hoffmann Companies reportedly spent nearly $250,000 renovating the building before reopening it in February 2023. Originally from Pacific, Missouri, Michael graduated from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary of Arts in St. Peters, and completed his externship with Gerard Craft at Niche Food Group.

The White House Cafe Chef Michael Brewer says a Christmas Walk-inspired five-course dinner will be hosted at Montelle Winery on Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m.

He then accepted a position with Chef Aaron Baguette and helped open EdgeWild Restaurant & Winery in Chesterfield. Chef Michael next created meals at the Ritz-Carlton in St. Louis, eventually becoming the executive chef at Chandler Hill Vineyards in Defiance, a position he held for the past six years. At Chandler Hill Vineyards, he says he was part of a staff who grew the wine club from 50 participants to 800-plus enthusiasts. Digging right in at White House Cafe, Chef Michael quickly added food items to the menu, such as an artisan sun-dried tomato pesto grilled cheese sandwich with Gouda, Swiss and Cheddar plus roasted bell peppers; a Caesar salad with housemade dressing; and a tomato bisque. "I also adjusted the ingredients of other menu items, like adding caramelized onions and mushrooms to a now 8-ounce seared steak sandwich," he adds. He says they've also introduced a variety of winter vegetables for side options, and are serving a BELT (bacon-egg-lettuce-tomato) with garlic aioli, plus a delicious new bread pudding.

The White House Cafe

The White House Cafe's current operating hours include allday brunch on Wednesdays between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Cafe also is open Thursdays through Mondays between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. The Cafe's menu covers appetizers, salads, soups, sandwiches, sides and desserts. Main entrees include schnitzel parma, beef tenderloin with bourbon gastrique, meatloaf and seared salmon with brown butter. However, Chef Michael reveals he intends to revamp the menu during 2024, adding chicken salad and French dip sandwiches, fresh fish/salmon, themed burgers and appetizers like lobster rolls. "In the future, I'd like to offer a five-course dinner with international and cross-culture flair cuisine," he shares. "I'm really proud of how hard-working this all-women kitchen team is."

MEANWHILE, ON THE WATER The Miss Augusta, a luxury yacht, sets sail on the Missouri River. She is 105 feet long, three stories high with a sundeck, CONTINUED >

and can carry 150 people. While relaxing to picturesque views, guests can enjoy exquisite cuisine on one of the public brunch, lunch, hors d’oeuvres or dinner cruises, directed by Executive Chef Don Tadlock II. Chef Don started his culinary adventures when he was 15 years old, spurred on by watching the cooking techniques of his mother, as well as his grandfather, a Granite City firefighter who cooked for all the district's fire stations and often for 500 people at area churches. As a graduate of Culinary Arts at Sullivan University, Chef Don is approaching one year with the boat. He studied under chefs such as John Castro and Omar Hafidi. He also owned his own restaurant, Chef Tadlock's Buffet, providing a homestyle Italian buffet plus banquet catering. Prior to Miss Augusta, he'd been a chef for Michael J Fox, Wayne Gretsky, Kat Williams, Michael Jordan, Brett Michaels and Adam Sandler at Chase Park Plaza in Louisville, Ky. However,

he came directly from working at Viking Cruises, which fueled his passion for being on the water. "But I didn’t like being away from my family for such long periods of time," he admits. Chef Don hosts monthly specialty cruises with changing menus and themes, such as An Evening in France, German Night, Italian Night or The Holidays. He also handles custom menus for private events and weddings. In addition, his planned lunch and dinner menus change monthly to new creations. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid to cook on a boat, ever since my mother used to take me out on all the wonderful riverboats across the country. For years I’ve been making people’s bellies happy on land. Now I want to do the same on the water,” declares Chef Don, who also loves to branch out from the kitchen to interact with on-board guests during the trips. MissAugustaBoat.com

Nostalgic Holiday Traditions Usher In Hanukkah, Christmas And Kwanzaa By Connecting To History, The Generations

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Holiday traditions build strong bonds between families, a sense of belonging, communities and self-expression.

POMANDERS

Radiate an old-fashioned holiday with a bowl of clove-studded oranges. These bright decorations are pretty, and smell just like how holidays should smell. Pomanders are easy to make by pricking holes in citrus rind to insert cloves. Year after year, this tradition will deliver that always-at-home Christmas aroma, no matter the location.

VINTAGE ORNAMENTS

Historically inspired or antique ornaments create a valued step back in time. Seek authentic vintage balls and bulbs at antique stores, or opt for retro looks with newer versions. Celebrate hidden-away childhood ornaments; pause and enjoy each memory they represent while hanging them.

FAMILY RECIPES

If childhood holiday traditions included baking with Grandma or Grandpa, then replicate those comforting dishes, cookies or perhaps gingerbread houses. Lovingly pull out those stained recipe cards and have fun making finger foods or yummies that never lasted long on holiday buffets. Or, try something like 1960s gelatin-infused molds driven by Jell-O/Cool Whip creations.

GIVE OUT GELT

Gelt is the Yiddish word for “money.” During the 16th century Hanukkah, it became a tradition to collect money to buy or make clothing for school pupils in need. By the 19th century, Eastern Europe Jewish families gave coins to their children. During the 1920s, American confectioners made chocolate Hanukkah gelt wrapped in gold foil, which remains its primary form. PULL CRACKERS

These festive, tubular table decorations, originating in London during 1847, make snapping sounds when pulled open, and typically contain a small gift, paper hat and joke. Note: Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, was observed Nov. 12 this year. CONTINUED >

OBSERVE KWANZAA’S SEVEN SYMBOLS

Each day of celebration, Dec. 26 through Jan. 1, is dedicated to one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa: unity (umoja in Swahili), self-determination (kujichagulia), collective responsibility (ujima), cooperative economics (ujamaa), purpose (nia), creativity (kuumba) and faith (imani). Discuss with family and friends what each principle means to you.

NATURAL GARLAND

Pop the corn to string the garland; some add cranberries. Better yet, pick up Jiffy popcorn prepackaged pans (originated in 1959) especially for this! An old-fashioned tree will feel complete with handmade touches like this one. Show creativity while slowing the hectic holiday pace for a spell. This tradition started on outdoor trees to give wildlife a treat, too.

YULE LOGS

Steeped in centuries of Christmas lore, this practice started as the crackling log burned in home hearths before trickling into kitchens. The Yule Log cake was originally a French custom that emerged in the 1800s. Made of sponge cake to resemble an actual Yule log, this delectable dessert is similar to a Swiss roll on the inside to mimic the rings of trees.

CHRISTMAS VACATION? ADVICE EDITORIAL: SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR THOSE WHO DON’T WANT TO BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

ARTICLE BY ROBIN SEATON JEFFERSON

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L

Whether looking for holiday cheer with a New England twist, the assurance of a white Christmas or even to escape the chill, there's a town in the United States that can accommodate it. There’s Cape Cod, where the Atlantic crashes into a coastline strewn with quaint harbors, windswept beaches, glorious dunes, cranberry bogs and blinking lighthouses. Add Christmas garlands, wreaths and lights to those lighthouses and the architectural and culinary gems adorned with weathered shingles, whaling captains’ mansions and chowder shacks, and a storybook Christmas setting materializes. It’s a place to capture the brilliance of winter sunsets, harbor views and roaring fires, where Santa arrives by boat, in a cozy B&B or at a full-service hotel, resort or inn. Plan a visit around the lighting of the Pilgrim Monument and the Lobster Pot Tree. Or book a spa experience, dine fireside, bundle up for a walk on the seashore or enjoy village strolls, parades, fairs, theater, shops or even a train to Christmas Town. The Annual Glassblowers’ Christmas features the hand-blown glass ornaments of local artists beautifully displayed on Cape Cod’s Forest of Christmas Trees.

Chosen by both Lifetime and Netflix for filming locations, Leavenworth, Washington, is a Bavarian-styled village set in the Cascade Mountains. Its Nutcracker Museum displays thousands of nutcrackers, some dating back centuries. The small village in the Alp-like mountains of Washington State, which leads to nearby ski areas and wineries year-round, boasts millions upon millions of Christmas lights, a reindeer farm called Antler Academy, sleigh rides, sledding and almost guaranteed snowfall. It might be located 1,744.54 miles south of the real North Pole, but rest assured holiday decorations will be on display from January through December in a town

of just more than 2,000 residents called North Pole, Alaska. One can celebrate the Christmas spirit year-round at Old St. Nick’s house (it can’t be missed; just look for the 40-foot-tall statue of Santa along the Richardson Highway), glimpse candy cane street lamps on byways with names such as Santa Claus Lane and Kris Kringle Drive, and meet the mayor who goes by “Santa.” Stay at the Santaland RV Park, or lodge at the Hotel North Pole. Those really committed to the season can reserve the Santa Suite, complete with its own Christmas tree. It’s a place where some 400,000 letters arrive each year addressed simply to “Santa Claus, North Pole, Alaska,” and CONTINUED > D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C H E ST E R F I E L D

Pennsylvania’s top 10 holiday attractions drawing visitors from around the world as well as locals who have made it a Christmas tradition for four generations. For those preferring warmth to cold, even in December, a small city on Florida’s southeast coast awaits. Delray Beach, Florida, features the Pineapple Grove Arts District, Japanese Gardens, serene outdoor spaces such as the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, and a very large Christmas tree. It may not have grown from Mother Nature, but the tenacity behind building this 100-foot Christmas tree, with its 18,000 ornaments and 217,980 lights, is real, says Danielle Beardsley, spokesperson for Delray Beach.

“The tree structure, the houses inside and the houses outside the tree, take about 10 to 14 days to set,” she says. “The details on the insides take about a month to complete.” When the aluminum sections are assembled, they create rings, each smaller than the next. Once the rings are completed, they are lifted by crane on top of each other creating the tree shape. The star is placed last. Activities in and around the tree include ice skating, carousel rides, walks through the tree and Santa and gingerbread house tours. Regardless if dreaming of a Hallmark movie-like setting or Christmas on the beach, as it turns out, there are real-life places just as charming as they seem on television and places that would make perfect destinations for dreams to come true.

Progressive Holiday Dinner ADVICE EDITORIAL: HOUSE TO HOUSE, DRINK AND BE MERRY

The holidays bring a slew of gatherings, and therefore the thought: how to switch it up and create a fun spin on usual evenings? If looking for a night of merriment with a group of 8-10 or more, consider arranging a progressive dinner party. The premise of this party is to hop from home to home, stopping at one place for each course. The larger the group, the more guests can really expand and sparse out the evening. If guests live far apart, consider choosing a few houses, and each couple or participant can prepare their item in advance, cutting down on travel time and enjoying a few items at each location. The courses can be anything of dreams, and a fun theme can even be chosen, but typically such parties kick off with appetizers or salads, continue on with larger starters, a main course, and a dessert. Cocktail or mocktail stops can be added in between, and there’s no such thing as too many dessert stops. To make it particularly festive, add light display viewings, such as Candy Cane Lane or Tilles Park.

Progressive Dinner Tips

Mel’s Go-To Dinner Party Salad Recipe

1. If your stop is later in the evening, choose a dish that is easily prepared in advance. For salads, preplate each serving so the dressing is all to be added. For mains, consider a meal that can be kept warm in the crock pot.

Combine: • Mixed greens • Slivered almonds or candied walnuts • Dried cranberries • Thinly sliced pears • Thinly sliced parmesan cheese or goat cheese cubes

2. Set your table ahead of time, or display the items as a “build your own” bar, where guests can create their own plate as they arrive, with each item on separate plates or bowls from which to build. 3. If you have dessert, consider a chilled item so it doesn’t need to be baked or warmed when everyone arrives. Cheesecake or dessert parfaits would work well. If it’s a crafty bunch, making gingerbread houses or decorating cookies as a group would be fun. For the holidays, a festive cookie tray also looks darling and gives the ability to offer a variety of items for the group.

Toss all ingredients with a sweet vinaigrette dressing.

Festive Winter Cocktail Combine: Prosecco or champagne, Aperol, cranberry juice and soda water to your liking. Garnish with cranberries and rosemary sprigs. Cheers.

Cranberry Goat Cheese Dip Recipe This is a crowd pleaser. Serve this concoction with a variety of toasted crackers. Simply chill dip prior to serving, but drizzle with honey and extra candied walnuts prior to serving. Pro tip: Make a double or triple batch, as this dip freezes well and easily can be thawed for a quick appetizer all holiday season. Combine: • One part goat cheese and two parts cream cheese • Crushed candied walnuts or nuts of choice • Dried cranberries • Brown sugar to taste • Honey to taste

Life is about experiences, declare Leslie and Brandon Westfall, who own and operate Studio 636 tanning salon and wellness spa in O'Fallon, Mo., 'by day,' and Party Razzi Entertainment on nights and weekends. They just celebrated the salon/spa's 13th business anniversary, and have been operating the entertainment company for the past 14 years. "Originally started as a DJ business, we realized during the pandemic that people wanted to still celebrate but with only other people they knew, or perhaps just their immediate families. So, we added a 20-passenger bus," explains Leslie. "Our party bus has a built-in, walk-up bar with mixers and bartenders; guests bring their own alcohol." They also provide music entertainment services, via Brandon as DJ Greezy, for weddings and special events, such as for the recent Asthma & Allergy Foundation

Brandon and Leslie Westfall

of America, St. Louis Chapter's 2023 Gala 2023 at The Chase Park Plaza Royal Sonesta. They've also provided music for events such as the Wentzville Pumpkin Chuckin & Bullying Prevention Resource Fair. Their son, as DJ Valentino, also gets in on the action. As a wedding planner, Leslie says she adores gatherings with themes. "My goal is to someday own a hall. Until then, my basement is filled with decorations," she quips. Until Leslie gets her retail hall, she coordinates bus outings with fun or seasonal themes, such as Dad's Day Out during June going to a cigar bar, gaming-related lunch spot and driving range. She also plans for comparable Ladies' Nights Out. She says they just hosted Pumpkin Patch bus drives, a 70s/80s Gala at a St. Louis downtown art gallery, and a first-ever Thrift and Sip outing on Nov. 18. "We had a big hats theme, and stopped at a variety of thrift stores

to have wine, charcuterie and snacks. So much fun," she adds. Currently, Leslie is planning Christmas Lights bus-hosted events on Dec. 2/3, 9/10 and 16/17. From three buses, she says they'll be serving warm cookies and cocoa, along with a scavenger hunt bingo game. "The whole bus can be rented for a private group, or join with a few other bus guests," she explains. New Year's pub/bar crawl bus events are next. Additionally, they rent motorized Slingshots, which essentially are threewheeled motorcycles or sometimes called autocycles because only a valid driver's license is needed to drive the vehicle. Brandon says they offer three Slingshots. "Rent one today, you will not regret it," he adds. 636.697.2090

All Aboard For An Enchanting Holiday Ride ARTICLE BY KARA SAVIO

DISCOVER MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS ON THE POLAR EXPRESS TRAIN RIDE

It’s all about believing and the magic that happens when one does! It’s time once again for the heartwarming story of a boy’s search for the meaning of Christmas. The story comes to life when St. Louis’ treasured holiday tradition, The Polar Express Train Ride, departs Union Station for the North Pole. What better way to kick off the 2023 holiday season than with one of St. Louis’ most highly anticipated holiday events, one that brings such joy to so many families? It’s a chance to relive the magic of the classic Christmas story based on the beloved children's book and to meet Santa. St. Louis Union Stations’ Cameron Schoeffel says they’re excited to bring this holiday tradition back to St. Louis. “Families can make holiday memories at Union Station and can even turn their visit into a staycation by booking a decorated suite at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel," he explains. The journey begins at Union Station’s holiday train park, where the conductor invites passengers aboard The Polar Express Train with its sparkling lights and dazzling holiday decorations. On the way to the North Pole, riders can interact with the Polar Express characters, Santa Claus and his elves. St. Louis mom Jeannie Smith says it’s the perfect way to get her kids, ages 2, 6 and 9 into the holiday spirit. “Every year when I tell my kids we’re going to ride with Santa on The Polar Express, they get excited. They always prepare by writing a letter to Santa and giving it to him on the train.” “Their eyes light up when they see the train because they know the magic is about to begin,” she adds.

Set to The Polar Express motion picture soundtrack, this unique holiday experience transports passengers into the magic of the much-loved holiday classic as they listen to well-known Christmas tunes sung by a medley of familiar voices such as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Steven Tyler, the Andrew Sisters and Josh Groban. The story is all about believing. The main character, a young boy, starts his journey doubting the existence of Santa Claus. After an extraordinary ride on the Polar Express, he becomes a true believer. Jeannie says, “It’s such a magical experience, especially for those with young children, because it brings the Polar Express book to life, and the characters sing the entire way to the North Pole.” Families are encouraged to wear their holiday pajamas for this scenic ride. They’ll be treated to creamy hot chocolate and delicious cookies while listening to a reading of the classic book. Upon arriving at the North Pole, Santa will board the train and visit every good little boy and girl to give them the magical gift of Christmas. Jeannie says it's reminiscent. “There’s something about sipping hot chocolate that brings me back to my childhood and happy holiday memories with my family.” Cameron says there’s even more holiday fun to be had at Union Station this year. “In addition to riding The Polar Express Train Ride, families can enjoy the Pancakes with Santa breakfast and lunch or dinner at Sleigh Shed, the holiday pop-up experience inside our Train Shed restaurant.” Start the holiday celebration with a magical ride on The Polar Express Train Ride for an unforgettable family experience that can create a lifetime of lasting holiday memories. Giving Campaign

2023 50

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
