Strong as a Mother
Happy May, Denver North Family! Welcome to our Women's Issue; a collection of strong, passionate, and empowered Denver Women who are changing and shaping our city with their businesses, their ideas, their drive, and their hearts.
I want to recognize and call out the most incredible woman I know...my mom! It is almost impossible for me to put into words just how special my mom is to me. She is kind, giving, compas sionate, and loving to all those around her. It is an honor and a privilege to be her daughter. I remember watching my mom when I was little and thinking about how much I wanted to be like her when I grew up. I never aspired to be like the women I saw on tv or in magazines or read about in history books....I just wanted to be like my mom: to leave each person she encounters a little better, to find a faith in God strong enough to move mountains, to be the rock upon which a family can be built. My mom taught me, not just in words but in her actions day in and day out, how to fiercely love your family, how to show up for those you love no matter what, and how to love your children unconditionally (even when they're "all grown up").
Mom, I am forever grateful for all you have done and all you do for me!
I Love You Mom!

A Cut Above The Rest Johnna Roybal -
Just a stone’s throw from Coors Field lies a Denver staple, and the perfect main character for our Women’s Issue: Retro Room Salon & Spa, owned and managed by Johnna Roybal. With 28 years of experience behind the chair and a passion that inspires, she’s done it all, accomplishing her childhood goal of owning a salon by 27 years old.
As you may know, Retro Room has a certain quirk: it’s a salon that’s connected to a bar. In 2006, Johnna and her husband opened up Code 3 Lounge — a local bar right down the street from her salon. Two years later, her husband proposed an idea.
“I thought he was crazy, but I was willing to try something that had never been done in Colorado before. After 16 years, here we are, still standing with a unique concept. It has been amazing to say the least.”
Along with its unique salon and bar concept, Johnna's unwavering commitment to her clients and her team is what sets Retro Room apart from the rest, "My passion has always been providing a service to make people feel beautiful and confident," she shares. "In this career, you have to love every aspect of life and care for the person sitting in your chair. It's not just about their hair or appearance; it's about how they feel and what they're going through." Still, the beauty industry isn’t an easy path to tread, despite how social media may portray it.
When you’ve spent years working in an industry only for someone to demean, or discredit the skill it takes, it hurts. Which is precisely what Johnna has noticed recently, “My passion in this industry has stayed strong for so many years. I want to see people grow and love this industry. I think the hardest thing that I see these days is that people think that what we do behind the chair through social media is so easy. It is not. I have had to work so hard over the years to build a strong clientele that trust everything I do. The courage to put yourself out there, not depending on your phone to make it happen, will lead to success.”
Looking to the future, Johnna sees a gradual transition where she can leave daily operations in the hands of her capable team, and oversee her business in a more traditional ownership role. But in the meantime, it’s business as usual at Retro Room — and if you’ve read this far, you’re in for an even bigger surprise.
Along with being a salon and a bar in one, Retro Room takes it even further with food options and even a spa, offering facials, peels, a dedicated eyebrow specialist, and waxing services. It’s the kind of place you’d end up spending a whole afternoon at without even noticing; Johnna and her husband have made sure of that.
If you haven’t stopped by Retro Room for an appointment, a drink, a bite, or a spa day, clear your next weekend afternoon and see it for yourself. You’ll find it off Larimer, between 20th and 21st.

BUILDING Dreams
Nancy Henderson’s story is one of resilience and determination, shaped by her upbringing in an entrepreneurial household in Houston. Raised by her father, who faced prejudice and adversity while building Latino Plumbing, Nancy learned the value of hard work and dedication from a young age. Alongside her siblings, she contributed to the family business, instilling in her the importance of perseverance.
Despite the challenges, Nancy became the first in her family to attend college and embarked on a career in the bio-tech industry. Her experiences taught her the power of persistence and continuous self-improvement.
In 2014, Nancy and her husband moved to Colorado, where she found her calling in real estate. Despite the uncertainties of the COVID era, Nancy obtained her broker’s license and founded High Ridge Realty in 2020. Through her unwavering determination, she expanded her business into property management, overseeing a remarkable growth from eight to fifty four properties in just a few years.
Nancy’s mantra of never limiting her dreams and embracing failure as a learning opportunity has been pivotal in her success. Beauty: Women in Art ART OF ART
Nicolasa Velazquez - Chief Operating Officer, Velart ARTICLE BY NICOLASA VELAZQUEZCHIEF OPERATING OFFICER, VELART“Our theory is - women of the world help us appreciate the more vibrant aspects in life, as well as calm the storm for the more treacherous moments. At times, we women can also be this storm: a force to be reckoned with.”
Beautiful things are never perfect:
With this imperfect image in today society, I have learned to lean towards these minuscule insecurities.
The most skillful artists of the world are woman. I have learned this concept alongside my partner, a strong male artist.
Our theory is - women of the world help us appreciate the more vibrant aspects in life, as well as calm the storm for the more treacherous moments. At times, we women can also be this storm: a force to be reckoned with.
Beauty is Subjective. It can have many imperfections, and this is what makes it unique and one of a kind, as each of us are.
Women and art, are the equivalent.
We aspire to achieve and display this element in our gallery boutique located at 3350 Brighton Blvd Denver Co 80216 or check us out online at Velart.com
Profile of Success

“I TEACH THEM WHAT I CALL THE EXECUTIVE VERNACULAR AND THE BEHAVIOR IN THE BOARDROOM SO THEY’RE READY FOR THE INTERVIEW, SUCCEED IN THE INTERVIEW AND THEN ARE SUCCESSFUL IN THE BOARDROOM”.
Michele Ashby thinks it's confidence, a feeling of safety, no limitations, no fear of the word no, and an imagination. These are some of the same traits that have propelled her through a successful business career. She has been my lifelong friend ever since that grateful day when she knocked on my door, and I have had the privilege of watching her entrepreneurship flourish in several businesses and nonprofits.
Currently, Michele’s passionate mission is to place qualified, competent, and confident women at the table in boardrooms across the country. Her company, Ace LLC, offers women the opportunity to become CDI.I certified through several class options. Starting with the first interview, Michele peels away the layers of limitations that might be holding a qualified candidate back from raising her hand. She says it’s making the aspirant aware of their top 10%, reaching the ‘cream of the crop’ of their capabilities. Michele makes the women aware of this extra piece that helps them be heard. “I teach them what I call the executive vernacular and the behavior in the boardroom so they’re ready for the interview, succeed in the interview and then are successful in the boardroom”. I enhance what they already have, give the candidate a proper language and branding, and encourage them to own what they have accomplished. In years past women were taught not to brag but a correctly ordered resume will identify the applicant’s best accomplishments that will benefit the decisions being made around the table.
As a corporate executive and multi-board director Michele is leveraging her experience and expertise to help other women reach the boardroom where they can have a positive impact on the business world. I have experienced the power of her friendship and know the impact she makes through all her relationships.

BRIDGE OF HOPE
ARTICLE BY CRYSTAL WRIGHT“Their commitment to a housing-first model and a family-centered approach has resulted in remarkable success, with over 85% of families graduating from their program achieving self-sufficiency.”
In a city where the rising cost of living has forced many families onto the streets, Bridge of Hope Denver stands as a beacon of hope. Over the past decade, they have provided stable and safe housing, rental assistance, comprehensive supportive services, and emotional support to single mothers and their children facing homelessness. Their commitment to a housing-first model and a family-centered approach has resulted in remarkable success, with over 85% of families graduating from their program achieving self-sufficiency.
The need for their services has never been greater, with a 304% increase in requests for help from single mothers and their children over the past three years. Colorado has seen a staggering 69% increase in family homelessness, with over 80% of homeless families headed by women. These families are often the "unseen" homeless, living in cars, shelters, motels, or doubled-up with friends or family.
Bridge of Hope Denver's programs not only provide immediate relief but also focus on long-term solutions. Through a combination of stabilized housing, professional support, and a network of volunteers, they empower
families to transition from surviving to thriving. Their emphasis on partnerships and collaboration ensures that families receive the resources and support they need even after graduating from the program.
Each family supported by Bridge of Hope Denver costs an estimated $17,000-25,000 per year, depending on their needs and financial capability. This investment pays off immensely, as families graduate with increased income, decreased debt, and the ability to cover their own living expenses.
The Golf Classic fundraiser is an opportunity for the community to come together in support of these families in need. By participating in or sponsoring this event, individuals and businesses can make a tangible difference in the lives of single mothers and their children, providing them with the hope and support they need to build a better future.
Bridge of Hope Denver invites all neighbors and friends to join them on August 1st for a day of golf and giving. Together, we can help end homelessness for single mothers and their children in Colorado, one swing at a time.

Mary Anning: A Woman You Ought to Know
The First Paleontologist
Do you know who Mary Anning was?
Mary Anning was a brave and curious woman. She grew up in a poor family, but later became the most famous paleontologist. Even though everyone underestimated her because she was a girl, she never stopped doing what she loved: learning and digging for dinosaurs.
Mary grew up in Lyme Regis, England. She loved to read and write. She loved to learn about everything she found. One day Mary and her brother Joseph were exploring the cliffs. Then, they found something… unexpected. There was a large eye socket that was looking right back at them! Mary figured out what
ARTICLE BY MARY GRACE FASSBINDER (AGE 10)it was. It was a large skull. (This dinosaur was later referred to as Ichthyosaurus.) But this sea creature's skull was all Mary and Joseph found of this dinosaur. Mary would not give up so easily. She spent almost a year looking for the rest of this fossil.
Mary also searched the shores of Lyme Regis for other “curiosities.” These were fossils such as amenities. She also found things such as fossilized poop! Mary also found peculiar black, cone shaped objects. Mary was curious so she cut one open. Mary put water on these “curiosities” and a black liquid came oozing out. Ink!
When Mary tried to attend a university, she was rejected even though she was very smart. Women were not allowed at the university. But Mary would not give up. She still persisted and did what she loved: learn and dig for dinosaurs.
As you can see, Mary Anning was brave, and determined. She would not give up because people told her to. We should all try to be more like Mary Anning.
