Style & Beauty
In Virginia, September may be one of the most visibly transitional months of the year. While the days often remain warm, the hours of sunlight become noticeably shorter and the leaves begin the slow transformation from their summer verdancy to the vivid red, orange, and yellow hues that are the trademark of autumn in the area. We think it’s also a time that can inspire personal transitions and transformations, which is why we bring to you our Style & Beauty issue this month.
This month we’re sharing a story of seasonality from restaurant 1799 at The Clifton, helmed by Matthew Bousquet, a Michelin-starred chef. Then, be sure to check out our roundup of where to shop if you’re looking to spruce up your home with sophisticated furniture, artwork, and other goods from local purveyors. Plus, we have some recommendations for spots around Charlottesville that can help you upgrade your personal style or potentially improve your overall health. And if you’re looking to elevate your look, we have a style maven who was happy to dish on how she approaches fashion.
There are also some stellar events around the area in September that we’ve highlighted in our Events section, many of which have a charitable focus, with organizations benefiting from ticket sales. And don’t forget to take a peek at our City Scene section to get an inside view into events all around the community. Remember to tag @citylifestylecharlottesville in your photos on Instagram for a chance to be featured in future issues.
As always, thank you for welcoming our publication into your home. We’re thrilled to be a part of the community and to work with all of our esteemed partners who help make our publication possible. We encourage you to check out all of their incredible services!

OF ARSENIC & OLD LACE, FILLS US IN ON FASHION TIPS AND HER SHOP IN DOWNTOWN CHARLOTTESVILLE.
Tell us about the shop’s focus and what customers can expect to find:
My shop is full of TRUE vintage. It is a small shop but has a little bit of everything. There is antique cotton, slips and peignoir sets, 1960s party dresses, 70s caftans, and Hawaiian dresses, but also beat-up denim and coveralls. I think accessories can make an outfit, so there are handbags, shoes, and always a nice selection of silk scarves. The vintage housewares, barware, lamps, kitty decor, and kitchen items are throughout the shop. I also carry vintage-inspired artisan goods, like stickers and patches, cards, and candles.
My little shop is a true labor of love -- the pieces have been thoughtfully chosen and lovingly restored a lot of the time. I love when people come in who appreciate quality unique fashion and the time it takes to curate such a shop.
Can you suggest some ways to pair current styles with vintage pieces?
Even if someone doesn't love to have their whole look vintage, a beaded clutch or a great vintage coat can really make a statement. Modern jeans with a funky pattern blouse and a 1970s leather belt. We sell a lot of occasion dresses, for weddings and parties. Mixed with modern jewelry or the perfect shoes, [it] looks super stylish and no one is going to show up in your same dress! If you have a closet full of good stylish and quality tailored pieces, you can put almost anything together and it looks good-throw on some great vintage accessories and you have a really chic outfit.
How do you transitioningrecommend your wardrobe from one season to another? .
Layers are so fun! A beautiful woven scarf, or sweaters over a collared shirt, boots with short dresses, and adding tights. Good staple pieces that work all year.
Please share anything else that you would like readers to know about you and/or Arsenic & Old Lace Vintage:

1799 Brings Beauty to the Table
THE CLIFTON'S 1799 IS SERVING SEASONALITY IN A STYLISH SETTING
Nestled on 100 sprawling acres just outside of Charlottesville is the historic Clifton Inn. Built in 1799 by Thomas Jefferson's son-in-law Thomas Mann Randolph, the original Manor House served as a house of trade thanks to its proximity to the Rivanna River. The property that was once a two-and-a-half-hour buggy ride for Jefferson and his wife to travel to as a home away from home is now a mere 10-minute drive from Charlottesville and is home to the restaurant 1799, led by Michelinstarred chef Matthew Bousquet.
Chef Bousquet hails from California. Born in San Francisco to parents in the military, he spent much of his younger years in Fairborn, Ohio at an Airforce base before returning to the Golden State for high school. Bousquet then entered the restaurant industry, eventually attending a culinary academy and rising through the ranks until he owned his own restaurant, Mirepoix, which earned a Michelin star in 2010. Then, looking for an opportunity to cook with the seasons, Bousquet relocated to Virginia.
While Bousquet cooked in the kitchens of restaurants around the area, including taking on the role of Executive Chef at Keswick Hall, he's spent the last six years of his 35-year-long career at 1799. There, Bousquet crafts his Jeffersontonian-style dishes using locally sourced ingredients that capture the essence of the season.
“The food is French but derivative of Virginia. Jefferson brought a lot of basic classics back from France,” Bousquet said.

The Clifton's Manor House
“It’s seasonal based on what we have here, but using basic classic French techniques.”
Bousquet sources the restaurant’s ingredients from farmers markets, local vendors, and The Clifton’s own garden, maintained by their experienced landscape architect. The menu is reviewed daily and may receive small changes to freshen dishes with what’s ripe from the garden. Larger modifications are made every six to eight weeks.
“Proteins might remain the same but the sauce and produce may change,” Bousquet explained.
At 1799, beef is on the menu year-round as is fish, though the type may vary through the seasons. Bone marrow and escargot are also an all-year menu option. Mussels are a summertime staple while duck is featured in the fall and winter.
Springtime menus often showcase a plethora of greens from asparagus and pesto to fava beans and purple snow peas grown in The Clifton’s garden. In the fall, root vegetables are prominent sides, particularly cabbage, butternut squash, and one of Bousquet’s favorites -- poached vanilla bean parsnips. The chef also enjoys working with pork belly, sweetbreads, and "fun cuts" of meat.
Diners at 1799 can settle into the Library for a stylish fine dining experience, the Veranda which looks out toward Monticello and the mountains, or the Terrace for outdoor seating. For more private experiences, there’s seating in the Wine Cellar or at the Chef’s Counter in the kitchen. Or, for those staying overnight in the Farmhouse on the property, Bousquet says that he can come to cook there, as well.
While the ambiance of the restaurant is upscale, its warm decor also exudes comfort. The combination of guests that are both travelers and locals lends to its charm, as well.
“It’s great... It's a nice mixture guaranteed all the time and you get this lively fun group of people that if they’re on the property they’re looking to explore. It’s always delightful to be around,” Bousquet said.
He literally sketches his dish before he creates it. He can make anything into magic -- there is an art behind what he does.

It’s great... It's a nice mixture guaranteed all the time and you get this lively fun group of people that if they’re on the property they’re looking to explore. It’s always delightful to be around.
The property’s current stylish interior, throughout the restaurant and The Clifton's rooms, is thanks to an upgrade that began when the current owners bought it in 2018. Previously a beige and white bed and breakfast, the spaces have been transformed by Tennesseebased Blackberry Farm Design into warm places with walls and furniture awash in greens and blues and accents from gold statement pieces, specially ordered lighting, and modern art. Rooms for overnight stays have also been elevated with Clifton-branded pillowtop mattresses and plasma televisions and the outdoor areas have been upgraded as well.
“Everything has been revamped. We have a cascading infinity pool, cabanas, a 20-acre lake, and walking trails [that are] cleaner than ever,” said Assistant Manager Maggie Farnin.
Farnin also says that the redesign pays homage to the history of the property, including the other early 19th-century structures that are also used for guest stays. While modernizing the decor, designers were also focused on retaining many of the original design aspects, including the windows and the floors. She also points to Bousquet’s work at 1799 as integral to The Clifton experience.

PURPLE KISS
I love family-style meals such as a crab boil this time of year. The food is the star of the show and a vital part of the tablescape – decor optional! Additional elements included here are a large paper-sail, light blue taper candles, a few large flowers, and heavy white rope as nautical accents. You can also use other elements such as large seashells, coral or seaglass. Use whatever you have on hand that nods to the sea.
SUMMER END of CRAB BOIL
ARTICLE BY LEANN PARKER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Fill a large stock pot halfway with cold water. Season with lemon peels, bay leaves, black pepper, red pepper flakes, Old Bay Seasoning, and garlic powder. Bring to a boil and add crab legs, sausage, potatoes, and corn until cooked. Strain water and serve on a large galvanized tray, newspaper or parchment paper – enjoy your meal with guests, family style!
Give each guest a bowl of garlic butter for dipping as well as lemons for squeezing (wrapped in cheesecloth and tied with twine to avoid seeds).
Include special beverages and desserts such as a tiered lemon cake or frozen treat to beat the heat.
