GETTING TO KNOW THE SAVANNAH BANANAS

Take Time to Explore!

We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those that I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me - the things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty.

But the truth is that's really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and openended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built.

Throughout my time in the military as well as various roles in my civilian career, I’ve been fortunate to travel around the world at various times in my life. And I can say without a doubt that my favorite experiences were the ones where I just went and “played it by ear” – just wandering the streets and towns, meeting local people, soaking up the cultures of wherever I happened to find myself. I am most at ease and find the most enjoyment out of new experiences – whether it’s a trip to Europe, or a drive down to Savannah to see the Bananas (featured in this issue – and I highly recommend checking them out in person. It’s truly a unique experience).

But my main point is that going on an adventure – exploring – can take many shapes or forms, but it’s really all about going outside of your normal comfort zone or routine. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To plan that trip you’ve been thinking about or to make time for the things that matter most to you but often come last on the calendar. It’s a big world out there and we should all find some time to explore it!

Visit Puerto Rico

Perhaps it’s time to visit Puerto Rico

ARTICLE BY TANA PONCSAK
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JULIO ALBA
The Puerto Rico coastline

It was September 20, 2017 when Hurricane Maria, a dangerous category 4 storm with winds of up to 155 miles per hour hit Puerto Rico. Alex Alba was in college attending the University of Georgia, but he wasn’t thinking about school or his classes as the storm headed for his father’s homeland. On the day the storm made landfall, Alex was thinking of his family members who still lived there and were in harm’s way.

For safety, those living on the coast had to move inland, including Alex’s grandmother, who stayed inland with a family member. Thankfully, once the storm passed, Alex learned his family members had survived the storm. It was time to assess the damage and clean up. Alex collected donations to help with some of the minor repairs needed to his grandmother’s home. At the time that was about all Alex could do to help.

Growing up Alex says he and his immediate family here in the states spent a lot of time in Puerto Rico. But after the storm, it was several months before Alex and his family could visit again.

In spring 2018, they headed to Puerto Rico, and Alex recalled the devastation that still lingered. Restaurants and shops that usually bustled with tourists and shoppers were closed. Areas of roads were still mangled and broken apart. And construction – construction was everywhere.

The website, Discover Puerto Rico, says Puerto Rico consists of the main island, four small islands and hundreds of cays and islets. Affectionately known as the “heart and soul” of the Caribbean, the site says it’s the people of the island that hold the island’s charm.

Alex Alba says there's much to do and to see in Puerto Rico.
The rainforest of Puerto Rico
Alex Alba shares his love for Puerto Rico.

“PUERTO RICANS AREVERY PASSION ATE PEOPLE. ”ALEX ALBA

And Alex agrees. In the midst of devastation, there was rebuilding – lots of rebuilding. What Alex noticed is the resiliency of Puerto Ricans. He says he saw people playing music and coming together to help one another. “Puerto Ricans are very passionate people,” Alex says. “I may have been born here [in the U.S.], but I feel like my heart is from Puerto Rico.”

While much of the damage from the storm was physical, many suffered financially. Alex says you can’t fully prepare financially for a storm like Hurricane Maria, but he realized he could help educate people to close some of the financial literacy gaps that keep them from making sound financial decisions.

Today Alex works as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional to help people gain a better understanding of how their financial decisions today affect their financial future. “It’s what I do for a living,” Alex says. “And I truly enjoy being able to help guide people to make sure they’re making those decisions.”

Much of Puerto Rico has since recovered, but Alex says there are still remnants of damage. It’s a long recovery. Puerto Rico’s economy is dependent on tourism, and Alex says we can help by visiting the island he has such fondness for. “Just visit the island,” he says. “The island has so many beautiful areas. There are beautiful hotels, the rainforest, and the shops and restaurants. Everything is local.” Alex admits that he’s biased when he says Puerto Ricans are the best people in the world because of their big hearts. Perhaps it’s worth a visit to find out.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR NEXT VACATION WITH THESE TRAVEL TIPS

TRAVEL TIPS

With summer in full swing, many people still have summer vacations on the calendar. And to help people spend more time exploring, we asked Heather Dockery, a travel advisor in Chamblee, for some of her best travel tips.

BOOK A FOOD TOUR

Heather recommends when traveling to another country to book a food tour on the first or second day of the trip. “You get to learn about traditional food and the culture,” she

They may be willing to offer more in the way of local information. Common words like hello, goodbye, please, and thank you are good place to start.

LEARN ABOUT CULTURAL TRADITIONS

Before the plane lands in your dream vacation destination, Heather says it’s a good idea to research and to learn about the customs and traditions of where you’re going. For example, if you go to Italy, it helps to know that cap-

“PEOPLE APPRECIATE WHEN YOU ATTEMPT TO SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE.” HEATHER

says, talking about the food tours. She also says your tour guide can give recommendations on where the locals go to experience the true flavor of the country. To find a food tour, Heather says your travel advisor can help or ask other travelers, friends, and family members for recommendations.

LEARN A FEW WORDS OF THE NATIVE LANGUAGE

Heather says when you’re in another country, being able to speak a few words of the local language can be helpful. “People appreciate when you attempt to speak their language,” she says, adding that it also helps to break the ice.

DOCKERY

puccinos are generally only served at breakfast. That way you don’t make the mistake of ordering one after dinner. Heather says they’ll still serve you the cappuccino, but it may be served with some strange looks to go with it.

HAVE MULTIPLE COPIES OF YOUR PASSPORT

Traveling abroad means you’ll most likely need your passport. Heather says to take pictures of your passport to keep on your phone. She also suggests emailing a copy to yourself. That way you can at least prove you have one in the event you lose or misplace your original. Keep an extra copy in a suitcase or travel bag that’s kept separate from your passport.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

Heather suggests getting travel insurance. “Everybody thinks it’s more expensive, but it’s only about 5% to 10% of your trip,” Heather says. She points out that you never know when your luggage may be lost. And then many people don’t realize that their health insurance may not cover them overseas. So once you’ve booked your trip, get your travel insurance. Heather says you can research the insurance on your own or your travel advisor can point you in the right direction.

PACK YOUR PATIENCE

We see it on the news – more people are traveling now, and Heather says those in the travel industry see no sign of it slowing down. Heather says people seem to value travel more than they have in previous years, and they are actually budgeting for it. But more people mean the potential for longer wait times. Allow plenty of time to get to your destination.

TEAM UP WITH A TRAVEL ADVISOR

When you’re planning a vacation, Heather stresses it’s always good to team up with a travel advisor. “We work for you,” she says. “It’s our job to make sure your trip is seamless and to save you time and money.”

THE SAVANNAH BANANAS

ARTICLE BY TANA PONCSAK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAVANNAH BANANAS

If you’ve been fortunate enough to score tickets to see the Savannah Bananas, then you know what all the chatter is about. But for those who haven’t had the opportunity to see firsthand, you may be wondering… Is it a baseball game? Is it a musical? Is it a show? Perhaps it’s a little bit of all three and then some. But the short answer is – it’s Banana Ball!

This season the Savannah Bananas literally took the show on the road in the way of a world tour, even making a stop in the Atlanta area at the Gwinnett Stripers Coolray Field in March.

Jared Orton, president of the Savannah Bananas, helped us get to know a little more about the world tour and the Savannah Bananas, and what the team from Savannah is really all about.

“At the end of the day, it’s still a baseball stadium,” Jared says, talking about the team taking on the world tour in stadiums around the globe. “It’s still bases and a pitcher’s mound and a home plate.” But he also adds, there’s a guy walking on stilts, and there’s a rodeo clown, and there’s maybe some fire. “But hey, we’re just a bunch of normal people who are putting on a fun baseball game for everybody,” he says. “We’ve built some great relationships and we’ve been fortunate to play in some really beautiful stadiums across the country…It’s just crazy to think that here we are from Savannah, and we’re playing in Des Moines, Iowa.” The 2024 world tour has also taken the team to places like Boston, Cleveland, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, just to name a few.

GETTING TO KNOW THE SAVANNAH BANANAS
The Savannah Bananas perform at a game.

According to the website, the Savannah Bananas team was founded by Jesse and Emily Cole in October 2015 as a summer college baseball league with a goal to make baseball fun and to bring fans back to historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah. It was a rough start until January 2016, when the team officially took the name Savannah Bananas and made national headlines. Since then, the team plays Banana Ball with a set of rules that’s all their own to packed stadiums. Banana Ball is played against other teams, such as the Party Animals and the Firefighters.

Tickets to see a show, I mean game, are a hot commodity. Jared explains there’s a ticket lottery each year that starts in the fall. For 2024, Jared says they held a live announcement on YouTube. “We announced our entire tour,” he says. “Every stadium we’re going to, all the dates, and all the surprises.” It’s this event that starts the ticket lottery. People have about six weeks to join the list. Jared says the 2024 list closed with a little more than two million names. The lists are scrubbed to ensure names are legit and no one is on the list more than once. Lucky names are selected at random for the chance to purchase tickets.

Jared stresses that if you purchase tickets by any means other than Savannah Bananas and the lottery, know who you’re buying from. “The only verified way to buy tickets is through us,” he says. Protect yourself. Unfortunately, there are a lot of scammers out there.

As for the 2025 kickoff, Jared says they’re already working on a lot of big surprises in store for fans. After all, he says that’s why they do this – for the fans. It’s what they call a fans first mentality. “We have a duty, and really, it’s a privilege to be able to welcome these people into our stadium,” Jared says. “I tell our staff we have to take our job seriously…But we also have to give ourselves permission to have fun with the people who are coming out here.”

And while the Savannah Bananas are about entertaining and giving fans a great time, there’s another side to the organization as well – Bananas Foster.

Bananas Foster is a nonprofit committed to the foster care community and dedicated to bringing families together. Also started by the Coles, Jared says the couple realized there are many great people who have been involved in foster care for a long time, and those people generally aren't recognized. “They don’t get celebrated, and their stories don’t get told,” he says. Through Bananas Foster, the Coles help by telling these stories and celebrating the impact these families have made, not only in the life of the child, but in the lives of many children and the communities they’re in. The organization not only celebrates the stories, but it also shines awareness on foster care and what it means to all those involved.

EXPLORING COMMUNITY

Meet Phillip Clark, the artist behind “Max” the piano

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

TELL US ABOUT YOUR START AS AN ARTIST.

Growing up, my family and I took road trips across the U.S.

During these long rides, I would study the trucks and billboards adorned with logos, which sparked my love for design. Although I doodled frequently, my dream was to design iconic brands. After high school, I enrolled in a visual communications program at Dekalb Tech, taught by the incredible artist Ray Shead. It was there I was introduced to Adobe programs and became hooked.

After graduating, I moved to Boston and landed my first job as a designer. Eventually, I branched out into painting, blending traditional art with graphic design, which became the foundation of my artistic approach. I use a wide variety of materials and techniques to bring my ideas to life. My purpose is to inspire and uplift the viewer, saturating my work with colors and concepts that radiate happiness. This stems from my desire to produce optimistic imagery in various forms. I find great pleasure in sharing my vision and shaping creative culture.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON THE PROJECT FOR PLAY ME AGAIN PIANOS?

From the outset of my art career, I've been dedicated to community revitalization projects. Public art is vital, particularly for young people whose families may not have the means to visit museums. When I saw the call for submissions for this project, I immediately began developing several concepts.

HOW DID THE PROJECT GO?

Creating "Max" was an absolute joy. Being selected to contribute to Chamblee’s burgeoning art scene was a highlight of 2023 for me. The entire process, from concept to completion, required over 100 hours of work.

WERE THERE ANY SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES?

The project posed several challenges, notably the extensive prep work required before painting could begin, which was both time-consuming and labor-intensive.

The intricate surface of the piano needed multiple layers of paint and protective coatings. From surface preparation to the final topcoat, creating "Max" demanded a great deal of time and patience.

WHAT WAS MOST REWARDING ABOUT THE PROJECT?

Play Me Again Pianos does remarkable work in communities by creating spaces that inspire and entertain. It’s an honor to be part of their mission to foster an interest in music and visual art.

DO YOU PLAY PIANO YOURSELF?

I took piano classes as a child and have always loved the instrument. While it's been decades since I last played, my love for music and art remains strong.

TELL US ABOUT SOME OF YOUR CURRENT PROJECTS.

Currently, I'm working on several commission pieces for my collectors. I've also recently launched an online store on my website, TheArtillery.com , which has been quite time-consuming. While I don't have any immediate plans for another piano project, I'm eager to find another public art project to undertake.

IF ANYONE SITS DOWN TO PLAY “MAX,” THE PIANO ON THE RAIL TRAIL IN CHAMBLEE, WHAT DO YOU HOPE COMES TO MIND AS THEY PLAY?

I hope they feel a sense of joy and inspiration, connecting with the vibrant energy and creativity that went into its creation.

—PHILLIP CLARK, ARTIST AND DESIGNER OF “MAX” THE PIANO

Dinner Theater

If you're looking for more than dinner and a movie, consider Murder, Mystery and Mayhem Dinner Theater at Petite Violette! Last month the dinner theater wrapped up  NCI-SVU Brookhaven, a three-act show with a local twist that included spoofs on favorite, popular T.V. crime dramas.

The dinner theater is not just for spectators. It's fun and interactive with audience members taking on several of the parts. Dinner is served as you watch the mystery unfold before your eyes with a four course meal of the fine french cuisine Petite Violette is known for. Each course is served between acts. It's a fun, entertaining, and delicious evening for everyone!

The next show is planned to start in August! Visit  petitevioletterestaurant.com for information and to purchase tickets.
