Return on Investment
Welcome to our Investment issue! And what better time to highlight the topic?
You see, I view spring as a return on investment. In autumn, we plant bulbs — daffodils, tulips and hyacinths. We rake up our leaves so that the dormant grass continues to receive sun throughout the winter. We trim back shrubs and plants in preparation for future growth. For months, through the cold, gray days of winter, we see no benefit from our efforts.

Then, spring arrives. Seemingly overnight, we see blades of verdant grass emerge here and there. Tiny buds pop out on barren tree limbs. And, best of all, ruffled petals of all colors push their ways out of the ground. Blooms in every shade of pink and yellow remind us that the work and the waiting are worth it.
When we hear the word “investment,” it’s easy for our minds to turn immediately to the financial arena. Certainly that is one vital way we invest. Yet, even in our interview this month with Goelzer Investment Management, the leaders talk more about how the firm invests time and resources into our community. There are so many vibrant ways we better the world around us beyond where we put our money. Every day, we see the benefits — from the way Goelzer team members help feed and serve the underprivileged in our area to the way local mosaic artist Nancy Keating's community art installations brighten our paths.
And we must not forget to invest in ourselves so that we, in turn, can give back to those around us. In this issue, we take a look at how ELEMENTAL, a fitness and lifestyle practice, helps people devote themselves to being the best they can be. We also talk with Hallmark Orthodontics about the good a simple smile can do and the importance of investing in our oral health.
We hope that this issue of Carmel City Lifestyle brightens your day and encourages you to invest in yourself and those around you.

CREATING Beauty One Small PIECE AT A Time
It’s a popular spot. Passersby the Monon Trail near Midtown stop and take selfies in front of the glistening, brightly colored, sevenfoot-wide butterfly wings that seem ready to take flight.
A kaleidoscope of colors, shapes and sizes, the thousands of tiny pieces of glass represent the diversity of residents from all over the area.
Like the butterfly, its designer, Carmel glass mosaic artist Nancy Keating, has spread her arms wide in generosity, sharing her art with the community.
“The Carmel Selfie Butterfly” is just one example of an annual tradition Keating calls the Chip In Community Mosaic projects. For the past 10 years, she has drawn and painted elaborate designs, then prepared the surfaces and thousands of pieces of glass. At specified events in the Carmel Arts & Design District, anyone could stop by Keating’s tables to “chip in” to the colorful works of art.

Local Mosaic Artist Nancy Keating Brings Joy to Carmel Through Creations and Community Collaborations
ARTICLE BY AMY ADAMS

“Some people drop by for five minutes and place a few pieces,” Keating says. “Others stay for 45 minutes, completing entire sections.”
For the first few years, pieces were auctioned off at former Mayor Jim Brainard’s annual gala to support the Carmel Youth Assistance Program. For the last several years, the creations, representing hundreds of hours from planning to completion, have been installed as public art throughout the city. In addition to the butterfly on the Monon Trail, “Cityscape” and “Roundabout” grace Sophia Square Courtyard on Main Street.
A former French teacher with a lifelong love for art, Keating found herself drawn to the patterns and luminosity as well as the tactile feel of glass-on-glass mosaics.
“My intention is to bring some joy, to make someone smile,” Keating says. “I call my work fun art, not fine art.”
Many would argue that Keating’s inspired creations are, indeed, fine art. Just take a look at the two multistoried mosaics installed in the Civic Square Parking Garage at 50 Red Truck Road. Named “Cosmic Flow I and II,” the mosaics total a breathtaking 440 square feet. Shimmering reds and blues flow in a continuous ribbon representing the infinite energy in the universe.
Laticrete, a construction solutions company that manufactures innovative, sustainable construction products, describes “Cosmic Flow” as not merely a piece of public art but “a testament to the transformative power of creative vision.”
“It has been a pleasure incorporating Nancy’s work throughout Carmel’s walkable downtown,” says Henry Mestetsky, executive director of the Carmel Redevelopment Commission.
A lifelong Hoosier and longtime Carmel resident, Keating is making her mark on the artistic fabric of the city. With years of practice and training evident in her body of work, she spends her days in her Carmel art studio, creating and teaching classes. Her artwork can be found at both Art on Main and at Indiana Artisans in the Carmel Arts & Design District. For class and commission information, visit her website at MosaicsGarden.com

ENRICHING LIVES

Caring For Clients, Colleagues and the Community
ARTICLE BY AMY ADAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY LOGAN CLARK (THYNK CREATIVE)
Every year, the United Way of Central Indiana bestows its Spirit United award on an organization that exemplifies a culture of giving back and making a positive impact on the community. In 2024, that award went to Goelzer Investment Management.
Goelzer Investment Mangagement CEO Greg Goelzer talks about the firm's focus on giving back.

“Engaging with the community is absolutely core to who we are. We believe it makes us better at what we do.”
For the past 11 years, the local investment firm has celebrated 100% of its team members contributing to the United Way, which works to bring the hope of a brighter future to those living in poverty. In fact, the only organization in which employees have provided more support for the United Way of Central Indiana is the United Way itself. And that is just one of more than 40 nonprofits and organizations Goelzer supports.
In 2016, Goelzer committed to joining with Gleaners Food Bank to help feed hungry Hoosiers by launching the One Million Meals Campaign with a pledge to provide one million meals over the next 10 years. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, and food insecurity increased in the area, Goelzer donated more than 500,000 meals ahead of schedule to reach its goal when the community needed it most.
“It is so important to us to give back to the community we serve,” CEO Greg Goelzer says. “We’re an investment firm, but the reason we exist is our core purpose, and that is to enrich the lives of our clients, colleagues and community.”
Greg Geolzer’s father, Don W. Goelzer, founded the company in Indianapolis in 1969 with the intention to surround himself with qualified investment professionals who shared the same core values.
Goelzer Investment Management encourages team members to be lifelong learners and invests in their development. Additionally, the firm empowers team members to give of their time to organizations about which they feel passionate.
“We give back through not only financial support, but volunteering and board involvement as well,” Goelzer says.

Bottom: In 2024, the United Way of Central Indiana presented its Spirit United award to Goelzer Investment Management.
In 2024, team members volunteered on 25 boards of organizations that better the community, the state and the world.
Goelzer team members aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, according to Dean Weseli, senior wealth advisor and director of G-Pro Sports.
“We see the kids and people we are helping firsthand,” Weseli says.
In fact, Goelzer’s 24-page annual community engagement report is filled with photo after photo of team members out and about the area, serving in various capacities.
This empowerment of colleagues is just one of the many reasons Goelzer Investment Management has ranked among the Best Places to Work in Indiana for many years. In addition, Goelzer has been ranked on national lists, such as Best Places to Work in Money Management. Both honors are based on independent review.
“We are very proud of the fact that this says we are a great place to work,” President Chris Cotterill says. “The heart of it is being good coworkers and good colleagues.”
Today, with more than 30 employees, Goelzer Investment Management is one of the largest registered investment advisory firms in Indiana. As business has grown and changed over the years, the firm’s Indiana-based clients have moved further north.
“With that population shift, it became clear that we needed to be closer to those clients to better meet their needs,” Cotterill says.
Carmel’s 1st on Main provides Goelzer the perfect spot to position the firm. The new multiuse building at the corner of Main and First Streets sits in the heart of the Carmel Arts & Design District.
In addition to its location in what is arguably the most dynamic area in central Indiana, the vibrant

interior of the Goelzer office has been designed with flexible, collaborative meeting space.
“We’ve designed this space to bring people face-to-face to work together to make a difference,” Goelzer says. “We’re looking forward to sharing the space with our nonprofits around Carmel and Indianapolis.”
For Goelzer, this represents one more way the firm can give back.
“Engaging with the community is absolutely core to who we are,” Cotterill says. “We believe it makes us better at what we do.”

GETTING TO THE CORE
ARTICLE BY AMY ADAMS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIANNA RICHARDSON PHOTOGRAPHY

STRENGTH, STABILITY AND MOBILITY — IT’S ELEMENTAL
What do you get when you combine the passions of a former competitive softball player certified in Pilates and the GYROTONIC® Method with a former professional football player who has a degree in exercise science and years of experience as a strength and conditioning coach?
You get ELEMENTAL — a specialty fitness and lifestyle practice started by Jessica Strom and Chris Snyder.
Far from a typical fitness facility, ELEMENTAL attracts professional and Olympic athletes as well as those who are serious about their fitness journey. Rather than being a “pop-in” operation, ELEMENTAL’s team members work together to assess clients’ abilities and design comprehensive plans to ensure they meet their goals.
“We are less of a social club and work on more of a one-onone or small-group basis,” Strom says. “Our target market is the person who is very goal-oriented, who is really seeking to make progress. As long as you have that mindset, we are here for you.”
Thierry Masquelin is an avid climber who has participated in American Ninja Warrior multiple times. However, despite his strength and determination, Masquelin found himself struggling with body control and mobility. Using what Masquelin describes as unconventional methods, ELEMENTAL customized a climbing-specific program for him.
“Jessica helped me focus my mind to tap into deeper inner strength and gain body control in order to overcome my plateau,” Masquelin says.
ELEMENTAL’s personalized process starts with a thorough assessment that incorporates Snyder’s expertise in evaluating a client’s strength and power with Strom’s knowledge of assessing stability and mobility.
Professional cyclist Chandler Horton performs a long stretch on the Pilates Reformer at ELEMENTAL.
“There are not a lot of places that address both,” Strom says. “We are good at blending the whole picture so that we get what we call the ‘human performance experience.’ Your program should be specific to your goals, where you are within your season, your body’s limitations and injury history.”
ELEMENTAL’s high quality sports performance trainers have been professional athletes so they know what it takes to build a complete athlete. The Pilates instructors are all certified.
In addition, ELEMENTAL uses technology to track clients’ performance and progression.
“We can see what’s happening in real time, and it helps us establish training plans and make needed adjustments,” Strom says.
The only one of its kind in the Midwest, the D-WALL at ELEMENTAL is an innovative physical rehabilitation and exercise system that captures quality of movement on camera. The D-WALL supplies numbers that can be used to establish a training plan and to reevaluate, note improvement and make adjustments.
Another sophisticated system for core strength testing, performance training and rehabilitation, the 1080 Quantum can measure acceleration, force, power and velocity. The only other system in the area is owned by the Indiana Pacers.
In addition to creating individualized progressive training programs, ELEMENTAL offers some small group training options. For example, several endurance athletes, a runner, a cyclist and a swimmer, might do a Pilates class together.
ELEMENTAL likes to say, “Winners do Pilates.”
“Pilates is a system,” Strom explains. “It’s not just exercises. It’s a way to strengthen your core so that you can have better power output and injury resilience when competing. Pilates is for performance; it’s for recovery.”
The same is true for The GYROTONIC® Method, which Strom describes as “the most dynamic method and intelligent movement system” out there.
“It’s great for clients from all different spectrums,” she says.
Strom is on her way to becoming a Pilates master trainer and a GYROTONIC® pretrainer so that she can teach other instructors, making ELEMENTAL a hub for not just athletes but trainers as well.
“When trying to find your edge, it’s all in the details,” Strom says.
ELEMENTAL focuses on the details.
For example, Strom talks about the importance of breath.
“Breath is the most underused tool in an athlete’s protocol,” she says.
According to Strom, using different types of breath can enhance mobility.
“Short, staccato breaths make you more injury-prone, and you can’t use your core as well,” she says. “But you can strengthen those breathing muscles from the inside out. You start creating space, and space is what you need for your body to move.”
In addition to space to move, we need to set aside time to move. Everyone these days has a lot on their plates, especially athletes who are running marathons and constantly competing.
“Building lasting fitness and athletic development takes an intelligent approach,” Strom says. “Just like you want to invest your money wisely, you want to invest your time wisely if you really want your athletic abilities to improve.”

IndyCar driver Felix Rosenqvist, right, works on strengthening exercises with Snyder.

“BUILDING LASTING FITNESS AND ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT TAKES AN INTELLIGENT APPROACH,” STROM SAYS.

EVERY SMILE A WORK OF ART

MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE ONE SMILE AT A TIME
ARTICLE BY AMY ADAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY LOGAN CLARK (THYNK CREATIVE)
Tasha Hall, D.M.D., knows the importance of a smile. It can be the defining characteristic of a person’s appearance.
“Smiles are part of every photo,” she says. “It’s your first impression in an interview.”
However, Dr. Hall understands firsthand that not everyone feels comfortable smiling.
For more than a decade, she served as director of Craniofacial Orthodontics at Indiana University and Riley Children’s
“IT IS EXTREMELY GRATIFYING TO SEE A PATIENT TRANSFORM RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU.”
Hospital. Her education and experience extend beyond traditional orthodontia, having allowed her to work with more challenging, multidisciplinary cases.
“In the craniofacial world, orthodontics tends to be more dramatic,” she says. “It has really allowed me to apply orthodontics to the whole body.”
Hall recalls a particularly rewarding case in which she worked through a challenging orthodontic problem with one specific patient who was denied treatment many times. She was able to bring positive lifelong change not only to her patient’s appearance but to her function as well.
LightForce lends cutting-edge technology to 3D printed braces.

According to Hall, orthodontics is sometimes determined to be “medically necessary” given the severity of the problem. Issues such as cleft lip or palate, impacted teeth and significant underbites and overbites are just a few examples of such instances.
“Orthodontics is the perfect blend of science and art,” Hall says. “Every patient is their own unique puzzle we get to solve.”
Hall is the owner of Hallmark Orthodontics. Together, she and Andrew Raber, D.D.S., serve patients at the Carmel location, as well as in Noblesville, Shelbyville and Elwood.

Hallmark utilizes cutting-edge technology, such as an advanced imaging system for 3D X-rays. Taking goopy impressions has been replaced by intraoral scanners, allowing almost all orthodontic appliances to be fabricated in Hallmark’s in-house lab. A bracket system called LightForce allows the doctors to place a patient’s teeth in their final position on the computer and 3D print fully custom ceramic braces.
“We know patients have to come here a lot,” Hall say, “ so we want to make sure it’s a positive experience.”
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children be seen by an orthodontist by age 7. She also encourages adults who aren’t confident in their smiles to get a complimentary orthodontic consultation.
“We love educating our patients about their dental conditions and explaining their treatment options,” she says. “Consultations do not mean you have to commit to treatment but rather provide you with the tools to make an informed decision.”
Hall points out that orthodontics improves health and functionality of your teeth and protects them from future damage. Now, that’s something to smile about.
“It is extremely gratifying to see a patient transform right in front of you,” she says. “Braces coming off is a wonderful combination of the patient’s hard work as well as our vision coming together.”
Every time braces come off is a cause for celebration!
