I

was finishing grad school and working two jobs when our sons were born. I tried to do it all, but something had to give because the family was getting crumbs. Jon and Tim saw little of their daddy for the first few months of their lives. I was raised in a Cat-in-the-Cradle family, which was the song's era. My father was a wonderful provider but personal time did not come easy or often. Harry Chapin's folk song of 1974 immortalized the sad role reversal of an ignored child growing up to be just like his dad, whom he now ignores. I remember asking my dad numerous times to shoot hoops or to play catch while he relaxed on the couch watching Saturday sports on TV. After pausing, he would ask me to come back in a little while, which I always did. Then predictably, he would respond, “I guess not right now.” I noticed my older brother quit asking, and after a few attempts, I too gave CONTINUED > up. Hearing “No” became my normal expectation.

Was I going to be just like my dad? In many ways I wanted to emulate him, but not by preoccupation with other interests and lack of attention. I was certainly at a crossroads. Our sons were challenging me to be a different parent. Would I learn and change, or repeat the habits of my father? Would I be the dad who is emotionally absent, or truly be present for my children? The commodity none of us have—time, could tangibly measure the answer. Almost every father believes in the importance of loving his child. But believing is not the problem. It's the doing. What loving father wouldn't give his life for their son or daughter? But our children aren’t asking for our lives, just our time. Ultimately, love is spelled T I M E. Time is the currency of all relationships. It's costly because we only get 24 hours per day. Once we spend an hour, it can't be recaptured—it’s gone forever. Loving my kids through spending T I M E would be expensive, but the price tag for losing touch with my children was much too high. I could buy back the lost moments when my sons were tiny, but I would not have this option when they were grown. To rewrite the lyric and my story, I wanted to have a good time now. I made three drastic changes in my schedule, after counting the cost. The first was easy as a dad. We spent time having physical fun. When they were little, we wrestled. As they grew older, we played soccer and hoops. Then came surfing and rock ‘n’ roll. Love changes forms as kids grow and change. The second adjustment came at night. Before they could read, I read to them, mostly C. S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. These stories developed their imagination, their love for reading and their attention span, while creating a deep bond. We still discuss books and authors over a good cup of coffee. Finally, and most important, I learned to never say no to their requests to spend time together. If they wanted to be with me, the answer was “Yes!” Sometimes it meant playing catch after a long day, or paddling out in frigid, windblown surf, or staying awake for midnight conversations or even late night L.A. rock shows. I wanted to be available to accept their invitations whenever humanly possible. We still live by this motto: Never say no. When our now adult sons or grandchildren ask us to climb a tree, build a sand castle or go for breakfast, we look for the yes. This is how we build relationships with those we love. This is how we rewrite Cat’s In the Cradle: Never Say NO. Find the Yes. Dr. Mark Foreman co-authored the book Never Say No: Raising Big-Picture Kids with his wife Jan Foreman. NeverSayNo.co

Greg Nelson, Sr.

A Lifetime of Community, Dedication, Teamwork ARTICLE DENA MT EATON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 20

Carlsbad Lifestyle | June 2016

T

hey say that no man is an island. Greg Nelson, Sr. who has made his home in Carlsbad for more than six decades would certainly agree. As the City of Carlsbad’s inaugural Citizen of the Year in 1991 and the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Philanthropist of the Year in 2006, some might call Nelson a philanthropist nonpareil for his financial and leadership dedication to the community. And, although the title is befitting, he attributes his success not to personal savvy but to his wife of more than 30 years, Barbi, and his four children, Gregory Jr., Jenna, Brooke and Chad. They are the backbone of his story. They are his team. The story of his youth has been told before: In 1959, Nelson, his brother Doug, and mother Mercedes, moved to Carlsbad from Arizona after his father left the family. He first set foot into the Carlsbad Boys Club (now the Boys and Girls Club) at his mother’s behest while she worked two jobs to support the family. Although the Club began as a playground and a safe place to go after school, Nelson soon embraced the Club’s mission of hope and opportunity, and began the journey to becoming a “productive, caring, responsible citizen.” It has become a lifelong journey of listening, observation, emulation and dedication. From 1959 to 1967, the Club was his “second home.” Not only did he earn his first trophies in sports here but he also gained his first mentor, Executive Director Doug Hall. The Club even gave him his first job sweeping the woodshop floor and sanitizing the locker rooms with a mop. While so many people look at low spots in their lives as obstacles or excuses, Nelson has the tremendous ability to find the positive in any situation. From the age of nine onward, he grew up without a father. So he watched people, he watched interactions, and he learned. Perhaps his greatest lesson from the Club is the importance not only of a team but also of the individual people on the team. To outsiders, the Boys and Girls Club may seem like an ordinary children’s program, but it is so much more. For Nelson, basketball wasn’t just something to keep a young man active; it was a way to learn about the importance of teamwork and social skills. He moved up to Athletic Director, and then, recognized as the “surfer boy,” he became Aquatics Director. Nelson took a few years off to attend MiraCosta College where he received his Associates Degree in Music; he never went back to school, but he never stopped learning.

Greg Nelson becomes part of a very select group in 2008 when inducted into the Boys and Girls Clubs of America Alumni Hall of Fame. Pictured here with another Hall of Fame alumnus, actor Courtney Vance.

A LIFETIME OF COMMUNITY, DEDICATION, TEAMWORK

(CON TI N UED)

He returned to the Boys and Girls Club at the suggestion of Doug Hall and, over his lifetime, has worked in almost every area of the organization. He calls himself “a lifer.” As he worked in the managing role at the San Dieguito Branch, his circle of influencers grew. He observed and emulated successful businessmen such as real estate developer Doug Allred. He admired their tenacity, positive mindsets, and ability to approach fundraising and management with a “can-do” attitude. They gave the children, their customers, more to do and more recognition for doing it. As the consummate Club insider, he understood the necessity of being proactive and providing programs and services that benefitted children and their families. The role of children as our future is something that he impresses upon everyone; they deserve every chance we can give them and everything extra we can provide. Equally important, if not more so, were the life skills that Nelson learned from his mentors, including how to raise a loving family, and how to show love and appreciation to his wife. He learned from them what he had not learned from his father. Nelson learned early on that he didn’t need to be the heaviest hitter in the room if he surrounded himself with a team of hard-working, dedicated individuals. As one of the founders of DonJoy, Inc. (now DJO Global), BREG, and owner of Gregorio’s Restaurant in Carlsbad, he calls himself “head cheerleader.” He has the uncanny ability to inspire people to be their best and work hard. When he bought Gregorio’s, he had no restaurant experience but he has crafted a lasting, successful business because of the team. They donate 100% of the profits to the Boys and Girls Club. Regardless of all the hours he may work, Nelson has never placed his family second. His children played basketball and he made a point of attending every single one of their games, even if it meant long days and redeye flights as business grew. He practices what he preaches, that one's family, the team, is the most important part of a man’s life. As a devout Christian, Nelson feels that he has been blessed. His authentic self is humble and thankful. Although the path may not have been easy or straight, everything that has happened had a

“The best thing you can do for your business...is to leave it for a day!”

purpose. It is a plan. He believes that with all the blessings he has received comes a responsibility to give back; the more you give back, the more you are blessed. “We have been the benefactors of a lot of great things. It’s not about me. It never has been.” Greg Nelson finds genuine joy in giving back to the community. His eyes sparkle when he talks about the jewel that is Carlsbad, the Boys and Girls Club, his mentors, and especially his family. GregoryRNelsonSr.com

Greg attributes his success to his wife Barbi.

or 25 years, Aaron Chang traveled to over 50 countries, shooting photos of top surfing talent at exotic locations, as a senior photographer on assignment for Surfing Magazine. An internationally acclaimed artist with a passion for surf photography, his work has been published in hundreds of books and magazines. He began shooting photos of his friends surfing and learned to surf during his early years spent in Imperial Beach. The beach communities of San Diego County have served as Chang’s home base over the years. His successful Aaron Chang Ocean Art Galleries are located in Downtown San Diego and Solana Beach and last year, he moved his family to Carlsbad. Viewing his photos, you are awestruck by their beauty and the breathtaking locations Chang has been to. But there have been challenges along the way. An incident that happened over 20 years ago has had a very profound effect on his life. At the time, Chang was getting ready for an elaborate trip to Africa with his wife and some friends. He decided to go surfing before the flight to get some exercise in. “Popping an air” too close to the beach, he landed headfirst in the sand. “It was a game changer for me,” he shares. Chang fractured his neck at the C7 vertebra and was paralyzed in his upper body, unable to move his arms. The trip to Africa was put on hold. While most people think of paralysis as lack of feeling, Chang experienced the opposite. For him, the sensation was incredibly painful. He describes a “mind boggling, numbing, crazy pain. It was like someone ripped my arms off and put a blow torch on them.” Out of commission for an extended period of time, Chang had to deal with CONTINUED >

intense pain for months. His doctors had him on a steady dose of painkillers and he couldn’t sit up in bed without assistance. “I didn’t know if I would ever regain sensation in my hands and arms,” Chang says. A nurse took special interest in him at the hospital and her advice saved his life. In hindsight, Chang feels going the surgery route could have cemented his paralysis. With good physical therapy, he completely recovered. A year later, Chang was back in the water surfing and taking photos. Chang used that event to shape what he wanted to do with his life. He felt he had a clear purpose – he knew he wanted to share the beauty of the world through his images. “I really wanted to help people through my photography, appreciate how incredible life is and what a gift it is,” he says. People take so many things for granted and he didn’t want to do that anymore. “It became my mission to inspire people to see the beauty around them, I decided to devote my life to fine art photography.” Some of Chang’s best selling releases in his gallery are recent photos shot in Carlsbad. One of these, titled Champagne, is a vibrant close-up shot of a wave breaking on the shore at Tamarack. “As I’m getting to know Carlsbad from a resident’s perspective, I’m finding a lot of great things about it,” Chang says. He’s getting familiar with local businesses and restaurants. His life is full with family responsibilities, photo assignments and two galleries. After so much traveling, Chang finds it interesting that he has become a resident of Carlsbad. On his early trips here, he met Witt Rowlett of Carlsbad Pipelines Surf Shop. They became good friends and Rowlett even was the best man at Chang’s wedding. “A great photographer who is an interesting, methodical and thoughtful person” is how Rowlett describes Chang. “Most people think of Aaron as a 28

photographer, not about his ability in the ocean,” says Rowlett. “They don’t realize how good a surfer he is.” Chang still finds time to catch a few waves when the conditions are right. His favorite local surf spot is Taramar. He rides a variety of surfboards that range from short ‘fish’ shapes to long boards and everything in between. Looking ahead, Chang is being considered for a new TV show titled Captured with Aaron Chang, which will take viewers around the world and behind the scenes, introducing them to the adventure of extreme photography. Combining his love for photography and his love of surfing, Chang has begun creating photo-surf board sculptures, some of which can be seen at his galleries in Solana Beach and downtown San Diego.
