Whether you know it or not, you live in a community filled with honorable men. Now, you might be thinking, “Justin, how can you say that? Every time I turn on the news or check in on social media, it’s filled with the worst of the worst.” I hear you. I see it too.
And it’s the worst of the worst that often brings out the best of the best. This issue is full of great stories that exemplify that truth. The local men, the gentlemen, if you will, that grace these pages have chosen to walk a harder path. They’ve set a higher standard of excellence for themselves, and in doing so, they protect and elevate everyone in their circle. These are honorable men, and our community is full of them.
For that we are truly blessed.
Recently I saw a short animated video of a coat hanging on a clothesline (riveting, I know. I like to watch paint dry too). But, sunny weather turned dark, the rain came, the wind blew, and that coat took a beating. The other clothes on the line blew away, but not that coat. It hung on, almost as though on a mission. Finally, the sun came back, and that coat, barely hanging on, began to open. And underneath was a smaller, beautiful ladies’ coat, representing mom, completely untouched. And that one opened, revealing two smaller coats, representing children, completely safe.
The message couldn’t be clearer. Men have a mission, and that mission is to protect, at all costs, their family and their community, even if it means (and it will) putting their own life on the line.
So gentlemen, if you’re feeling like that coat, like the storm ain’t going to quit, like you’re not sure how much more you can take…
Hang in there. You got this.
We see you. And the people you’re serving and protecting are worth it.

It has helped me experience profound relaxation and stress reduction resulting in improved overall well-being. While results may vary, I’ve personally found it to be a valuable addition to my self-care routine. I also had the pleasure of participating in a group class organized by Trudie and Lisa. Dr. Jeff Hogan and Mike Martinez throw a 1-2 punch at cancer for Haymakers for Hope.
ARTICLE BY KEVIN GETZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHYSeeing Mike Martinez smile and how well he treats his employees and customers at Best Option Restoration, it’s hard to believe he enjoys punching people. Yet that’s what Mike did when he boxed at last year’s Haymakers for Hope charity fundraising event.
To prepare for the fight, Mike lost 18 pounds, mastered time management, and ultimately won a fight on his boxing journey. “The most fun part was getting to know the other fighters,” he says. The true winner that night was Epic Experience Beyond Cancer, the beneficiary of Mike’s fundraising efforts. He lost a close friend to cancer, and he felt compelled to help cancer survivors.
His fiancée was supportive but worried because their wedding date was just two months after the bout. “I chose to box because it made my donation more impactful, as though I was a part of it.”
That is vintage Mike—making his presence felt. Just ask his opponent that night.
Although he grew up in Windsor, Ontario, Jeff Hogan, a chiropractor at Hogan Health and Chiropractic, has lived in Colorado since 2014. An avid hockey player and admitted fitness junkie, Jeff yearned to escape his comfort zone. Introduced to Haymakers for Hope charity by a friend, Jeff decided that boxing for cancer research would do just that. He signed up for the June 13th Rumble in the Rockies IV boxing event.
The time commitment to train and fundraise is extensive. But Jeff remembers the physical and mental battles his older brother fought between 2016, when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), and his eventual remission in 2019. “He never complained, never had a negative word to say, never stopped fighting and he beat ALL.”
The money generated in the ring will go to Windsor Tough, a charity founded by his brother that raises awareness of the bone marrow donor registry. Quiet by nature, Jeff admits, “I am also excited to get in front of a few thousand people and fight someone.”

His parents were missionaries who raised him well.
But even being brought up in a home with a servant mindset where the Golden Rule wasn’t just a meaningless platitude, Jim, like many men, found trouble. And even if he wasn’t actively seeking trouble, trouble seemed to have a way of finding him.
Jim was serving time in jail for his third DUI. He was angry at everyone and had pushed his family away. Beneath the anger was a man who felt he was a disappointment and that society, his parents, and his girlfriend had, or should, give up on him. Like many men who suffer from depression and self-loathing, he felt his flaws were the worst. He felt like a failure.
“KEEP GOING, AND KNOW THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO ALONE.”
Friedrich Nietzsche described our soul as the abyss. Those who have stared into the abyss realize this truth – all have sinned. Whether you believe we are born inherently evil, or inherently good, not one person is without fault. People can be selfish, impulsive, obsessive, jealous, insecure, and devious. “Mankind” is not kind at all. Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; Who can know it?”
That is a harsh and convicting truth. But the good news is this: those of us who recognize the selfishness and deceit of our hearts can be more understanding and merciful to the failures of others. It opens the door to empathy and healing.
As a pastor, I’m thankful for the opportunity to reach men facing their abyss. Through our time together, Jim realized that I didn’t judge him. He felt acceptance and grace. He began to understand we have all sinned and fallen short, knowing that he was no different than anyone else; he felt the light of grace enter his life. He was marked with truth. Three months after we first met, I received a letter from him. Shame had been wiped out. His family was restored. He had finally faced them with humility, acknowledged his weakness, and accepted their grace. He could do that because, in part, he knew he wasn’t worse than them. He just wanted to face his frailty in the presence of people who loved and supported him.
Whether you accept the Bible or not, we can agree that the story of Cain and Abel as recorded in Genesis 4:1-15 is relevant to our human experience today. Out of jealousy and
contempt, Cain killed his younger brother, Abel, and he was cursed. He was forced to leave the area and “wander the earth.” Cain pleaded with God. He felt the punishment was too great for him. He was banished from the presence of God and his homeland. God showed him mercy by giving him a mark that would protect him. You read that correctly… the mark of Cain was not a curse. It was a mark of protection. Cain killed his brother but God showed mercy. God said he would punish anyone who harmed Cain 7x more harshly than the harm they inflicted on Cain! This was not only done to protect Cain but to protect mankind. It was a lesson, and a reminder for us all, that vengeance cannot lead to peace. Only grace and forgiveness can lead to peace. Again, whether you accept the Bible or not, this story is filled with practical and universal truth.
Now back to my friend Jim. His freedom hinged on whether or not he would be able to forgive himself. The only one who knows Jim’s heart better than Jim is God. Jim knew his heart, his soul—his abyss, and he didn’t like what he saw. He needed to see that he was indeed worthy of God’s grace. Once he was able to face his abyss, with God at his side, he was able to accept God’s grace, God’s forgiveness, and in so doing, was able to forgive himself. The truth set him free, and he is now living the life he was meant to live.
In closing, I’ll encourage anyone who reads this who might be facing their abyss. Keep going, and know that you do not have to go alone.
According to a worldwide survey titled the “Global Trends in Giving Report,” 42% of respondents said that limited financial resources prevent them from giving to charity. Guys Who Give (GWG), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Justin Livingston of Louisville, Colorado, aims to help overcome this challenge at the local level. By pooling resources, GWG reduces the financial burden on each individual. Then, by focusing each impact event on a single recipient, voted on by members, the concentrated effort helps raise awareness and funding for local, lesser-known charities.
The goal of each quarterly Guys Who Give event is to raise over $10,000 in an hour. The Broomfield Chapter is growing but falling short of that goal.
GWG Broomfield was started by Jeff Gazaway and Arik Brum several years ago and has grown to a consistent membership of 30-40 members on average. However, the time has never been better to make this group what it was always meant to be—100+ guys donating $100 each to show fellow community members that they are NOT ALONE.
The impact they are having is real! Here’s just one example: thanks to an anonymous matching donor, Daniel the Lion Fund became a recipient of one of the largest donations ever in 2023!
“This changes the whole year for us!” exclaimed Daniel Jaramillo, founder of Daniel the Lion Fund, after he learned they would receive a much larger donation than expected. “How did you guys do that?!” he said, fighting back tears. “Are you pranking me?!”
For this special feature, a handful of GWG members share their stories about why they are proud to be involved in this special organization and the impact they are having on Broomfield. Read on to learn more!

“It’s humbling to sit here today with 21 chapters of Guys Who Give and Gals Who Give.”
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START GUYS WHO GIVE?
Many years ago, I met some women who gathered once a quarter, and each gave $100 to a local charity. I loved the idea and wanted to create a similar organization where men could meet to pool resources and have a huge impact. We created an opportunity for guys to help local charities and foster an environment where like-minded men could gather with a common mission. It’s humbling to sit here today with 21 chapters of Guys Who Give and Gals Who Give and many more on the horizon.
DESCRIBE A FAVORITE MOMENT FROM GWG.
One time, we surprised a recipient in a meeting. The founder of the nonprofit was chatting with us as he was going through the mail and realized that he had received an unsolicited $100 donation. He stopped our meeting to call their bookkeeper to excitedly tell them how the donation would help “keep the lights on.” In listening to his conversation, knowing I had about 100 checks just like that in my back pocket, the moment catapulted into something life-changing. As we presented the donation and told him why we were there, tears filled our eyes knowing that what had just happened would empower them to do incredible things. It’s those moments that truly make this worth it.
“Knowing others truly believe in our group and its mission is beyond rewarding.”
HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT GUYS WHO GIVE?
I first heard about Guys Who Give through friends connected to the original Boulder chapter. My wife and I attended and heard from the previous recipient who spoke directly about how many young lives were saved through the group’s donation. Seeing each member fighting back tears, I asked myself, “Why don’t we have this in Broomfield?” My wife has been my best friend and biggest supporter—her strong desire to find ways to give back convinced me this opportunity was simply too good to pass up. So, I reached out to Justin to start a chapter here in Broomfield, unaware Jeff Gazaway had done the same. Jeff, Justin, and I connected one afternoon at Wonderland Brewing Co. knowing we wanted it to be our “home.” Within just a few months, we hosted our very first event!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE MEETINGS?
Seeing everyone come together, share stories, and collectively decide where our donations will make the most impact is inspiring. Knowing others truly believe in our group and its mission is beyond rewarding.
YOU’RE INVITING A FRIEND TO VISIT A GWG MEETING. WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?
As coined by Broomfield Lifestyle’s very own Justin Schierkolk, I really enjoy calling it “the most impactful happy hour in town.” In just four hours a year, we can do so much to help nonprofits already doing great things in our community to keep on doing those things.

“Somehow, if I’m buying the beer, they come for sure!”
YOU’RE INVITING A FRIEND TO VISIT A GWG MEETING. WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?
I tell them how I got involved, how frequently we meet, and how much it costs each member. I invite them to join us for a beer and check it out. Somehow, if I’m buying the beer, they come for sure!
WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT GWG?
There are many ways to give back and support charities, but this one is special with a great group of guys who have fun meetings and make a difference locally.
WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE?
From the beginning, our goal at Wonderland was to bring the community together in a family/dog-friendly environment with a unique craft beer experience. With GWG right here in Broomfield, you can make a difference, meet some great people, and enjoy four meetings a year with this group. As busy professionals, many of us don’t have much spare time. In just one hour, this group makes a huge impact!
“Thanks for highlighting one of the best organizations in Broomfield!”
Sam Taylor
Guys Who Give Broomfield Chapter Member. CLIMBER Program Director with the Colorado Treasury.
WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT GWG?
That it’s only four times a year, which isn’t a burden for most people. Also, you can give to all three of the names that are drawn out of the box, not just the one voted on.
HOW HAS BEING INVOLVED IMPACTED YOUR LIFE OR CAREER?
It definitely makes me feel good to see the difference we can make by helping a nonprofit meet its mission.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT GWG THAT YOU FIND THE MOST MEANINGFUL?
I think it’s meaningful and important that we talk about various local nonprofits and raise awareness for them, even if they are not selected by the group that quarter.
THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN THIS INTERVIEW! ANY FINAL THOUGHTS?
Thanks for highlighting one of the best organizations in Broomfield! This group has no goals other than to support the nonprofit community of Broomfield.
“…All guys are invited to join us at our next meeting on August 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Wonderland Brewery.”
HOW HAS BEING INVOLVED IMPACTED YOUR LIFE OR CAREER?
It’s rewarding to me that a bunch of guys can get together over a beer, and at the end of an hour, give a local nonprofit thousands of dollars in direct donations. Inviting the recipients back for the next meeting so we can hear about the impact of our donation helps complete the story. Sometimes our donations can be a significant portion of the operating budget for the year, and that feels pretty amazing to me.
DESCRIBE A FAVORITE MOMENT FROM GWG
The presentations are what I enjoy the most. At every meeting, anyone can nominate a nonprofit serving Broomfield County. Three nonprofits are drawn, and the nominators share with the group why their nonprofit should be the recipient. Most of the time, the nominator has a direct personal relationship with the nonprofit, and as they share their experience, it often fills the room with emotion. Once the presentations are complete, the entire group votes, and a single recipient is selected.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH BY SHARING YOUR STORY THROUGH BROOMFIELD LIFESTYLE?
Growing the Guys Who Give membership ultimately means giving larger donations to Broomfield’s nonprofits. If you’re reading this, please know that all guys are invited to join us at our next meeting on August 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Wonderland Brewery.

“Your effort, your heart, is multiplied 100X. Let’s do this!”
HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT GUYS WHO GIVE?
My friend Michael Plaia invited me to attend. He shared a great story about how he nominated and won the quarterly donation at the very first meeting he attended.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT GWG THAT YOU FIND THE MOST MEANINGFUL?
I love the recipient presentations! Hearing about the direct impact of our donation and the people we help and serve is very meaningful and fulfilling.
DESCRIBE A FAVORITE MOMENT FROM GWG.
The check presentation to Daniel and Jax Jaramillo was one I’ll never forget. They had no idea that the GWG donation received an anonymous donor match, totaling over $10,000. Daniel almost fell over. “How did you guys do that?!” He exclaimed as he started tearing up. “Are you pranking me?!”
WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT GWG?
The one thing everyone should know is that ANYONE can do this. Imagine a 100X match to your donation to a cause you believe in. Your effort, your heart, is multiplied 100X. Let’s do this!

Chris Hickey served on Broomfield’s Special Operations Motorcycle Unit for many years. In 2008, when a fellow officer got assigned patrol for the eighth Fourth of July in a row, Chris offered to trade shifts so his colleague could spend the holiday with his family. Riding home from work on his motorcycle the evening before his Independence Day patrol, Hickey was involved in an accident with a commercial vehicle. The collision broke Chris’s back, both tibias, his femur, his hand and much more. The crash traumatically injured his brain and caused significant hearing loss. Chris underwent multiple surgeries and two and a half years of intense physical and occupational therapy.
Eventually, Hickey’s allotted time of paid recovery ran out, and his career with the Broomfield Police Department (BPD) came to an unwanted end. Unbeknownst to his superiors, Chris’s medical retirement
had still not been approved by the necessary outside agency. This officer, who had selflessly served his community and daily risked his own life while raising two beautiful daughters, now looked down the barrel of unemployment with no way to support his children. “The bottom fell out of my life,” Chris shares, “I thought I was going to lose everything.”
Then one day, the phone rang and the caring voice of the late Tom Deland broke through Chris’s nightmare. “How are you doing?” inquired the Chief. “I’m drowning, Tom. I’m financially drowning,” Chris admitted. Deland, one of the founders of the Broomfield Rotary Fire and Police Fund (BRFPF), gladly stepped in. Not only did they throw the Hickey family a financial lifeline until Chris could start working again, but it also opened the door for their eldest daughter, Katelyn, to attend DU with a partial scholarship.
Broomfield Rotary Fire and Police Fund provides financial assistance to police officers & firefighters who are injured or lost in the line of duty.
Partnering with the Broomfield Rotary Club to support the Police and Fire Fund is a purposeful way for you or your organization to join in the mission of providing assistance to some of the most important people in our community–our first responders.
